“Fear for their safety” is why I fly a rainbow American flag in a redneck Republican town.
Somebody’s fucking with you on your way home from school, kid? Come up on the porch, pull up a chair, sit for an spell and wait for your ride. The big, scary-looking redneck holding a shotgun will wait with you until your people come get you, so that you’re safe.

Yep. I hang a Pride flag in my classroom. Partly to be out-and-proud myself. But mostly as a signal to students that (A) LGBTQ+ students are welcome and accepted in my classroom, and (B) I will tolerate zero homophobic bullshit from bullying students.
Last time a student used the word "faggot" in my classroom was maybe 7 years ago. It did not go well for him. Hasn't happened once since then.

I just teared up.
Somebody had to take a stand. Why not me?
