Ironically, the rent seekers of the fucking world are actually causing problems for businesses that actually DO things.

A living wage would be a lot less if housing was free. It would be somewhat less if housing was half of what it is now, etc. By locking people out of home buying and then working their asses off to suck every dime from the renters, they're putting upward pressure on wages (and social services).

Affordable housing benefits ERRYBODY.

Affordable housing + good quality, cheap-ass/free education benefits ERRYBODY.

It's like roads. Businesses get that it doesn't help the economy to have a patchwork of independent tollways all the hell over. This is that. It doesn't help to create an inaccessible housing market. Fuck these people right out of the economy.

I'm a former small time landlord, which I can assure you is no day at the beach, but that's a story for another day.

There's a guy who lives in my city, who owns more apartments than anyone in America. His name is Robert Faith, and he owns Greystar. He was Mark Sandford's economic adviser and during that time they raised taxes on landlords to 3x what the taxes are if you occupy your home. At the time I couldn't figure out why he would want to raise taxes on HIMSELF.

What ended up happening, was that small landlords like myself got priced out of the market, because we couldn't afford to pass the cost of the taxes on to the renters. Robert Faith also was able to spread the costs of the tax increases over a few hundred renters, whereas I can't. So he cornered the market, and he also won't build apartment buildings unless the city will give him a tax break.

He also was apparently behind the scam in NYC where rents soared after the pandemic, even though there were thousands of empty apartments in NYC. I kept thinking it was odd that people "flooded" back into NYC, because it was like a ghost town last time I was there two years ago. He was holding apartments offline to keep the prices up.

They won’t be happy until every room contains two families of five like 1830s Manchester.

Societal economies cannot be grokked by microbrained greedmonger "free market" types. Because they can't detect on a fuckin' spreadsheet the benefits in stark numbers that jump out at you and grab you by the throat.
