LISTEN TO THIS MAN.

We were just about to tell you that HOORAY, special counsel Robert Mueller is finally looking at Cambridge Analytica, the creepy weird data firm co-owned by GOP megadonors The Mercers, which worked for the Trump campaign, had Steve Bannon on its board, and which we’ve always suspected was doing illegal horse puckey on the internet and inside Trump-loving dildo-wits’ brains (and maybe more), to help Russia steal the election for Donald Trump. (Call it a hunch we have been having since the very beginning.) Remember how we just found out CA tried to help Russian intelligence front WikiLeaks find the mythological “33,000 deleted Hillary emails” and really wanted to help WikiLeaks find a better way to organize all the Russian-hacked Hillary and DNC emails it was releasing? Yeah. We are sure that is the only thing they did, and didn’t, just to make up a hypothetical completely hypothetically, receive stolen voter data from Russia’s Alfa-Bank as laundered through Betsy DeVos’s Spectrum Health and the Trump Organization in order to direct dark Facebook posts to your more persuadable Jill Stein voters. Hypothetically. YOU BETCHA.

So that means Robert Mueller is getting OMG close, or that he was getting OMG close a few months ago when he started requesting email records from Cambridge Analytica. (By the by, CA chief Alexander Nix also interviewed with the House Intel Committee on Thursday, according to the Wall Street Journal.)

We were going to tell you all those things. (Or maybe we JUST DID and if you want to know more information you should click the clicky above like a common clicky clicker who clicks clickies.)

But instead we must redirect your attention to the tweeting newsfeed of Rep. Adam Schiff, ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, who has been one of the absolute HEROES of trying to save American democracy from the band of Russian intelligence asset thugs who currently control the US and A. Schiff is hitting the “OH FUCK!” button, and his warnings are that he thinks the Mueller investigation is in more danger than we even knew, and also that he thinks the GOP dumpster fires who run his committee (Devin Nunes, Mike Conaway, Trey Gowdy) are going to shut down their investigation, such as it is, by the New Year.

Read, get freaked out, get ready to take to the streets, and also IF DONALD TRUMP AND THESE MOTHERFUCKERS RUIN CHRISTMAS, WE ARE GONNA BE PISSSSSSSSSSED.

Over to Schiff:

IF WONKETTE MAY CUT IN TO PROVIDE CONTEXT:

Schiff is talking about an interview with Rhona Graff, Donald Trump’s longtime Trump Organization personal assistant, who has a reputation for being the person in Trump’s orbit, more than anyone, who probably knows where all the bodies are buried, because Everything Goes Through Rhona. He is also talking about an interview with Russian-American creepo criminal businessman Felix Sater, who has done much business with Trump, and who has openly bragged about using the (failed) Moscow Trump Tower deal as a quid pro quo for Russia stealing the White House for Trump. (For more, read our post about Is This Weird-Ass Moscow Trump Tower Thing The Key To The Whole Damn Trump-Russia Conspiracy?)

These are KIND OF IMPORTANT witnesses that the GOP leadership of the committee has just for no reason decided shouldn’t have to come to Washington to be interviewed by actual members of Congress. Instead, they’re just sending staffers, because fuck it why not, it’s not like they are patriots. (We also continue to suspect Russia has something DIRTY on Devin Nunes, because if anybody’s resting face says “I can has Russian pee hooker pee all over my mouth too?” it’s his.)

Back to Schiff:

What did we say above about taking to the streets if Trump ruins Christmas, even more than Christmas was already going to be ruined because a festering anal scab such as himself is the actual president of the United States?

It’s looking more likely than ever that we will have to do that, and thank heavens, a solid majority of the American public supports the Mueller investigation and loves America and is pretty sure Donald Trump is a pig and a common fucking criminal, so GOD BLESS US EVERYFUCKING ONE, LET’S GO SAVE CHRISTMAS.

(Or “holiday,” if you are one of those liberals who hates the baby Jesus.)

Can we send the entire GOP to Jerusalem to celebrate Christmas this year? It’s what Jesus would have wanted.

  • ManchuCandidate

The GOP is pretty much the party of Putin’s Russia. Nunes and Gowdy in particular. Now I am really curious as to why they would obstruct such a serious investigation outside of the usual political reasons.

Has anyone heard that the Russian bots have gone into overdrive in the last 24 hours? I saw a mention on Facebook, can’t find it anywhere else.

      • Reximus

Bots are trying to goat Trumpanzees into getting Easy D to think he can fire Mueller with so much public support he can get away with it

It’s a trap he may fall for

        • Non-Threatening Ron

‘May’? It’s harder to trick a two-year-old into thinking you’ve stolen their nose than to trick Fat-Ass 45 into doing what you want him to.

        • Good_Gawd_Yall

The problem is that he WOULD have enough support. There are not enough people who care deeply enough about this. If he fires Mueller over the Christmas holiday, do you really think people will give up their travel plans and celebrations to take to the streets? Because I don’t. I think they’ll be paying no attention whatsoever to the news, and their attitudes will be along the lines of “Really? Well, that sucks.”

        • Anne Of Green Bagels

It appears they are flooding every major left and right site with spamming defenses of TrumpCo and promoting investigations into Hillary Clinton and disparaging Robert Mueller personally and professionally and blanketing the sites with calls to close down the investigations into Trump.

  • Resistance Fighter Callyson

I’ve been worried about this. Here’s hoping Mueller and/or the press gets to the truth, stat…

  • It didn’t seem like those Congressional committees were going to accomplish anything anyways. It’s all about Mueller.

  • Christopher Story

I say do it. Pull that trigger. I’ll bet my country on Mueller being smart enough to already have five backup plans in place. We already know of his coordination with state AG’s. Hell, it would be less suspicious if Mueller and his whole team just showed up all dead one morning. This is what will bring Trump down.

    • Reximus

They wont touch Mueller’s Investigation…the House committee maybe, but not the Special

      • Non-Threatening Ron

I don’t credit them with that much sense. Panicky people usually make bad decisions, and it’s not like they were making good ones before this.

      • Zippy W Pinhead

they will let Donnie get away with another Saturday night massacre though

        • Reximus

maybe yes maybe no, but not before the GOPTaxScam passes, then they dont care what happens to trumpy

      • Good_Gawd_Yall

Oh, of course they will. There is nothing so craven and out-and-out illegal that the repukes won’t do it.

        • P’jama Pahnts

Unfortunately I agree. If trump fires Mueller the Reps will stand around looking at the ground and changing the subject “until it blows over” and it becomes just another of many fucked up stories in this presidency. When the ruling party has neither shame nor morals they can get away with anything. Until November 2018. And even then there’re no guarantees.

          • Good_Gawd_Yall

The next step is cancelling the elections. They will find some grounds, like “the process is underway of finding out what happened in 2016” or they’ll just simply say, Nope, no more elections, sorry! since they’re in control of congress, the WH, and 30 governorships.

          • Duckbudder

            Then it’s time for a 2A solution.

          • MC Planck

    • vermonter9

THIS!!! I lawyer. I know a lot of good lawyers, a couple great lawyers. Mueller strikes me as a very, very good lawyer, who understands his mission, his targets. If that is so, he has thought this thing out, has state contingencies ready to roll, has hidden the evidence all over the place. God, I hope so.

      • Nigel R. Toppinglift, III

Could Mueller have used his investigation as a decoy, while other, quieter investigations are racking up evidence? Because, that’d be pretty cool…

    • Treg Brown

      This right here!

Don’t fuck with people (DOJ) who’ve committed their lives to upholding the law.

      • YoBunnyBunny

Upholding the law is a foreign concept to the Trumpinistas. They literally believe everybody does this stuff just to grease their palms. That Mueller & The Justice League are not quietly acquiescing to the bullshit makes them mad. Really mad. Crazy mad. Fuck up the whole goddam country MAD!

    • Good_Gawd_Yall

We ARE betting the country on this. If repukes pull the trigger the response will be everything. If people don’t literally take to the streets in outrage, if calls don’t flood congressional offices, if congresspeople don’t overturn this, the country is finished. Literally finished. We will have no democracy left if a small handful of compromised lackwits can overturn investigations into a hostile takeover of this country.

      • texcynical

        Agreed.

    • Machnethylsteinerbincolabird

    • Christopher Story

And that’s what keeps eating at me in the back of my mind: Why?
If Pence is as bad as Trump, he could sign everything just as easily, and with far less crazy antics. So, yeah… Why are they still keeping him on?

      • BearDeLaOursistance

Because if Russia has enough polonium for one, they have enough for hundreds? :-o

        • Non-Threatening Ron

Basically my thought. None of them can be sure they’re not bought-and-paid-for tools, since none of them gave a good goddamn where the campaign money was coming from.

          • BearDeLaOursistance

Citizens were United all right. They just weren’t ours.

      • Oblios_Cap

He could probably implicate all of them in the Russian collusion, too. I’ll bet the whole lot of the GOP leadership was in on it.

        • Christopher Story

The more and more I hear about them, the more I believe it.

      • Zippy W Pinhead

beause the Mueller investigation will take down Pence too

Which I truly don’t understand. Mike Pence would certainly be delighted to sign ratfucking and poorfucking legislation they put forward. Mother would be just so proud of him.
He’s also not nearly so toxic to their supposed brand.

      • redarmyzombie

Probably because he’s in this shit as deep as Cheetolini is.

      • Nigel R. Toppinglift, III

“Mother would be just so proud of him.”

She might even take his dick out of the jar and let him touch it…

  • Non-Threatening Ron

Not that it’s necessarily apropos of anything, but how accessible are the lampposts in DC, and how much of a vertical load do you think the arms might take?

  • cmd resistor

I didn’t expect a whole lot from the GOP “committees”* anyhow But they better leave Mueller alone.

    • Paperless Tiger

The committees are just kicking rocks, but what’s coming out has them spooked.

  • Good_Gawd_Yall

We simply may not have a democracy anymore by 1/1/18. I fully expect them to cancel elections before November – there are too many obviously complicit repukes in congress who clearly plan to allow this hostile takeover of our country. I can’t imagine why they think Putin will allow them to continue to pretend to run affairs here, but we are about to lose our country without a single shot being fired.

    • BearDeLaOursistance

That’s when all hell would break loose. I know it’s not a popular opinion in most progressive circles (we MN Dems can be kind of weird)… but thank God for the Second Amendment.

      • Good_Gawd_Yall

The government controls the military. Remember all those pictures of the numpty fucks lying behind highway barriers to protect Cliven Bundy’s “right” to graze his cattle on public land? And how we laughed and laughed at them for forgetting about helicopters, and F-16s, and things? Well, the same holds true for us if we try to go up against a military armed with the kinds of firepower ours has. Too many repuke voters in the military. I’m seriously worried.

        • BearDeLaOursistance

In a strictly legal sense, that’s absolutely true. But the military also isn’t a homogeneous organization. Many of its members may well realize that they swore their oath not to a leader, but to our Constitution. Or so one is inclined to hope…

          • Good_Gawd_Yall

Oh, I gave up “hope” years ago. It’s burdensome.

          • BearDeLaOursistance

I’m hanging onto it mainly to protect my liver. I already ask a lot of that organ.

      • Kurn

I respectfully disagree. I think most Americans would just roll over. The number that think our politicians “know best” is astounding.

      • Duckbudder

Also a son of MN, locked & loaded.

    • laineypc

Those poor militia dudes! This is their chance to legitimately defend us, from actual tyranny, just like they always dreamed. Somehow I think they aren’t really seeing it like that. Just as well I suppose, but hey. I’d rather have Russia threatening us with code than nukes.

    • Duckbudder

      Just as Nikita Khrushchev predicted.

    • MC Planck

      Cancelling elections would be hard.

Having the CIA or FBI arrest any Democratic candidates that look like they could win on suspicion of “Russian collusion” would be… easy.

Even North Korea has elections. As long as there’s only one name on the ballot, elections are fine!

  • jodyleek

    • JohnC44

      I’m afraid to click this.

    • Red Bird

But Putin is still bad so meh.

  • Anna Rompage

In other words, the trail of evidence has just lead the congressional investigations to incriminating evidence that goes well beyond the scope of the presidential election, and implicates the whole of the GOP & RNC as well.

There’s been a lot of rumblings on the street about how the GOP and RNC have knowingly funneled tons illegal foreign money (especially from Russia) into SuperPACs that back the GOP and a number of prominent conservative platforms…

Did I mention I’m offering a New Years special? Buy one Guillotine, get one free!

      • Non-Threatening Ron

THAT is a terrifying scenario. I have to take solace in knowing that the Russian military isn’t as all-powerful as they used to be.

        • Christopher Story

How many sympathizers in our military? Especially in positions of command?

          • Non-Threatening Ron

Even more terrifying. There’s so freakin’ MANY commanders, and I’ve never had the impression that there’s really much oversight. How deep does the rot go?

          • Christopher Story

If our career politicians are bought, it could go to the bone.

          • Slamtundra

No, I think that’s backwards. I’m still holding out hope that the military command are truly patriotic. Selling out for the highest bidder is pretty much the career politicians’ standard operation procedure.

      • Paperless Tiger

I doubt Putin has that option in Fortress America, but the comparison to Ukraine is apt. This whole debacle may be a reprisal for messing up Putin’s plans in Ukraine and, of course, the sanctions. Mainly, I think he just wanted to stop Hillary Clinton. Trump may be expendable.

        • WomanInThePersistence

Depends on if I like it. I’m not especially fond of Wisconsin style, and much prefer Vermont. English cheddars are a bit high and miss.

          • Non-Threatening Ron

In those distant times when I was young and had my health, there was a place in Lakefield Ontario called Pine Grove Cheese. They’d been around forever – some of their cheeses had won prizes at the Canadian National Exhibition, back when cheese judging was a Thing there. In 1967 (our Centennial) they laid down some cheddar and let it age a full seven years. I bought some. It was magic. And it was all gone by 1975. The company’s gone too. There’s prolly a moral in there somewhere.

          • WomanInThePersistence

A well made and carefully aged cheddar is delightful. A not so thoughtfully aged cheddar is merely old.

Robert Mueller has kept his cards close to his vest all throughout his investigation. No leaks. He has a consummate knowledge of DC’s political fuckery. He’s keeping NYS AG Scheiderman informed and is prepared to hand over everything if he’s shut down. That being said, it would be just in character for Mueller to come out with a major surprise indictment if the Rethuglicans try to shut him down.

Then, every Rethuglican who wants to shut him down looks like a traitorous treasony thimblewit.

Remember, Sealed Indictment “A” has been sitting in a DC courtroom for months. And Bob Mueller don’t play.

This is a game of chicken. What do we have to do to provoke riots so we can suspend elections. The more widespread the better. Nothing is off the table.

  • shivaskeeper

Were any of these GOP led Commities, in the House or the Senate, actually going to go anywhere? I was not betting on them doing anything other than holding hearings and then shrugging their collective shoulders.

This committee in particular is run by two partisan hacks and headed by a likely unregistered foreign agent if not outright traitor. Does anyone think they would point the finger at the people signing their checks and keeping then in power?

If this goes south principled people like Adam Schiff will have a choice to make. They can dump the classified information they are privy to into the public domain and then face the repercussions for violating the NDAs or not.

    • yyyaz

If Schiff and Co., have to break a few rules to give our republic a fighting chance, I think they will have more friends helping them than the traitors can muster.

      • shivaskeeper

It’s possible. They could have all the support in the world, but doing something like that will end a career in disgrace at a minimum, and some serious fines and possible jail time at the worst.

That is why people don’t come forward more often. That’s why anyone who is questioned about why didn’t they come forward talks about a crisis of conscience. That is why it’s not surprising to anyone that Manning went to jail or that Reality Winner is still in jail. It does not matter what info is released and the good it might do. What really matters is the violation of trust. It sounds stupid, but that’s the thing.

How long does it age? I plan to make some Cuban eggnog this weekend. I’ve never made it but have drunk it.

          • Martini Ambassador 🍸

The aging thing is a personal preference more than anything else. One of my favorite food blogs did a review and roundup if you’d like to know more (and I strongly suggest bookmarking and following them, because they are excellent): http://www.seriouseats.com/2016/09/is-aging-holiday-eggnog-worth-it.html

But I like a two-week aging. It yields a bit of floral notes to the aging, and I’ve also read that two weeks is enough time to kill any salmonella if you use questionable eggs. But the Alton Brown recipe that I like (https://altonbrown.com/eggnog-recipe/) is great unaged too. And the Serious Eats shaken nog is nice too.

I don’t know the Cuban variety, but I’m guessing it’s heavy on the rum.

Florida congressman Matt Gaetz, a House conservative who has led the charge against the Russia investigation and calls for a second special counsel, said Friday morning he wants Robert Mueller fired — and wants more Republicans to join in his cause.

“Congress has an obligation to expose what I believe is a corrupt investigation and I call on my Republican colleagues to join me in firing Bob Mueller,” Gaetz, R-Fla. said in an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo this morning. “It’s time for Mueller to put up or shut up. Let me see if I understand this. This nation spent more than 100 million dollars and a decade investigating the Clintons. The GOP spent over $82 million tax payer dollars on four Clinton related scandals pushed by the Republicans lawmakers leading up to a much anticipated report from Star the Independent Council. Finally the findings of the Star report were released in September 2000, with the following conclusion. “This office determined that the evidence was insufficient to prove to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt that either President or Mrs. Clinton knowingly participated in any criminal conduct.”

    Benghazi.
Those committees interviewed over 255 witnesses, held 62 hours of hearings, in which Clinton participated in the two she was asked to testify before. In the ten hearings almost 1,400 questions have been asked and answered by the witnesses, and thirteen reports were published comprising of over 2, 500 pages of information.

The fruits of that partisan labor has brought no charges against Clinton.

According to a total from the GEO the amount of public money spent in an attempt get former Secretary Clinton was around a staggering $22 million…BUT we need to shut down the Russian investigation by the end of the year.

      • SeeTrainOffTheRails

Clinton Derangement Syndrome™ (© Charles P. Pierce, LLC)

      • Sakonyachen

I used to disagree. I voted for her because she was not Trump, and she was not going to ratfuck everything Obama built. I made the rookie mistake of thinking others were as smart as I am. I underestimated how ridiculous my countrymen(and women) really were. Just because I’m not a pig, doesn’t disqualify the beast oinking at me from being one on the soul basis that we both like pizza.

I didn’t like her fiscal view. And I worried she was too wooden to be elected. Seemed reasonable that people could disagree with her and not hate women.

Now I just think there was holy terror that we could have 16 years without a white man in the Oval Office.

        • Angela Ruzzo

Oh, yes, Obama scared the bejeezus out of a lot of white Americans. They were shaking with helpless rage which they redirected to ridiculous, childish conspiracy theories that they actually began to believe themselves after a while. In a way, this was very destructive, but in another way it was about time that America confronted its centuries of racism that still permeate the culture. The bursting of the racism pustule is going to leave scars, there’s no doubt about it. So then Obama left office without seizing tyrannical powers or taking away all our guns as predicted, and this fury had to be redirected yet again – this time against women and any other group that challenged the Great WASP Straight Male Power Base. Hillary was the perfect target.

A great many people are simply ignorant. Every single white working class person I know who voted for Trump says they did so because he was a “good businessman, and we need one of those in the White House.” But he isn’t a good businessman at all, and that is NOT what we need right now. They believed the facade, but were too ignorant to see through it. They don’t have a clue how Big Business really works, they don’t even know how the federal government works. When they think of a “good businessman” they think of some local guy who Made Good with a string of local car dealerships. If you talk to them about how Trump played bankruptcy games with billions of dollars of borrowed money, their eyes glaze over.

There was a good line in a TV series about 25 years ago – a factory worker in 1946 was complaining to his boss about having to work side-by-side with black people. His boss said “It’s not your fault that you’re ignorant. It IS your fault if you stay that way.” That stuck with me. I find that a lot of people are ignorant, and they know they’re ignorant, and they want to stay that way.

One might wonder how things would have been different if Hillary had been elected in 2008, and then Obama in 2016.

          • Sakonyachen

Clinton v McCain? That would’ve been a blast. Nobody could have called her shrill with a straight face while she was up against Grampa Fussy Pants.

The Trumps have spent $147 million dollars in personal travel since taking office and Republicans are pissing in their pants over $6.7 million dollar investigation?

      • Sakonyachen

Over treason nonetheless. Don’t recall any accusations of treason against either Clinton. I’m sure some wingnut on a wingnut sight has made a semantic argument that would make Glenn Beck laugh and make tinfoil hat jokes, but nothing that would make the news. 22 million in butthurt is fine, but 6.7 for treason is a bridge too far? Russia hasn’t been a Communist country for decades. It never actually was fully Communist, it simply said it was aiming for that ideal and would get there some day soon. Following the collapse of 1989-91, Socialism and Communism were officially repudiated by the ruling party. It is technically a Capitalist Oligarchy.

I would have done that (and she would have regretted it) but the pasta was 30 seconds away from being al dente and the sauce had been simmering for 30 minutes and the cheese was grated and the wine was poured, so I didn’t accept the invitation. I wish now I had said “fuck the pasta” – I could have cooked more later. Pasta is cheap…democracy isn’t.

So their plan is to shut down the investigation and then lose both the House and the Senate next year? Good work wingnuts.

It’s our job to make sure we elect Dems with enough balls to do what must be done to put these traitorous morons away. You know if/when Dems have some power there will be calls to ” reach across the aisle” and do whatever the butt hurt Republicans want. That should be our line in the sand. No quarter given to traitors or their enablers

        THIS!

If one were to do a study of competent vs crazy people in Washington, the ratio of competent to crazy men would be something like 1:1. For women, it would be like 10:1. Electing people without a penis is a good idea.

Only Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein can fire Mueller, and he said just two days ago that he would not consider doing it. Rosenstein would have to recuse himself, or Trump would have to fire Rosenstein, and then Rachel Brand, the Associate Attorney General, would take Rosenstein’s place unless Trump appointed someone else to do so, which he might or might not be able to do legally.

    So who is Rachel Brand?

Indict indict indict. The congressional hearings are to prepare the nation for possible impeachment, but Mueller in the meantime will still go for the crimes: like accepting bribes from russians in the form of money laundering, gifting Rosneft stock, building now empty luxury hotel (viz. Azerbaijan), etc. Impeachment won’t be remotely possible until dems have control of both houses, which is a year out at the very best. In the meantime, indict the fuckers.

Drumpf can’t realistically pardon his toadies until they have been charged/convicted of a crime. Only guilty pleas so far have been for lying to the FBI, committing perjury on gov’t forms, etc. All of the above just to start the slime sliding down the stairway to hell.

So, are we to believe that once pardoned, everybody then can be forgiven for lying to the FBI? No way.

      • Slamtundra

So can Mueller create, write, whatever, a sealed indictment against Trump then prosecute him as soon as he’s out of office?

        • Monty Market

If indictment was good enough for sitting President Clinton, then it’s good enough for a traitor president taking bribes from the russians :… in a landmark 1997 ruling, Clinton v. Jones, it permitted a lawsuit against Mr. Clinton for unofficial actions — accusations of misconduct before he became president — to proceed while he was in office.” Drumpf has been laundering russian rubles for years before he was president, so, yes, he can be indicted for crimes committed before he was president.

      • Ms.Moon

I wonder how many of those sealed indictments are for sitting members of Congress? We just might end up with a whole new Congress sooner than expected.

Until next November when Dems will be in charge, almost nothing of value will come from the House intel committee.

    • The path for retaking the House is simple:
Run ads starting now in blue states against Republicans who are voting for the tax bill that’ll take away or cut the SALT deduction.

NJ, CA, and NY should suffice.

if they cannot win those R seats in blue states, might as well fold up.

Once they get control, it should be nothing but Russia investigations. Nothing is going to pass anyway

      • House0fTheBlueLights

Frankly, I also think we should run a ground game in gerrymandered districts. Because there are plenty of Dems in those districts, they just don’t vote, because what’s the point? Give them a reason to vote–i.e. viable candidates and some evidence that they will not be alone, and I’ll just bet you we can take some House-level Alabamas, too.

        • Yes, because partisan gerrymandering is going to be legislated by the SCOTUS as law of the land, soon.

Even in Alabama, the turnout was only 25%. Just getting the black turnout from the customary 20-25% to about 30% did the trick.

If only they could focus on getting it to 50, 60%, they would not have to worry about gerrymandering. Instead of whining that the GOP is making it harder, they should just get people registered now. Rides, legal assistance, whatever it takes. And on voting days, transportation.

Doug Jones ran an excellent campaign. Did not take the high road when the assholes went low either.

The candidate matters, of course. Ossoff could have won, with all that money if he hadn’t wimped out as soon as they went low.

      • Slamtundra

If the Democrats do ever get back in power, and if there’s anything left to be in power of, we need to push to make voting mandatory. Somebody from Australia was talking about that on a thread a few days ago.

        • Unclejeems

I would even go for intermediate steps like voting on weekends, election days as national holidays, voting open for several days–even a week; and actually letting qualified voters register and vote, despite age, color, national origin, or previous condition of servitude.

          • george lastrapes

And one (or many, many) could exercise the Open Vote option to make their choice unflippable.

Like people who can’t be bothered to vote will suddenly become sentient to the issues etc. Fuck that. Just means more inbred fucking uneducated fucks to deliver us the next fucking popularity contest winner. Hulk Hogan vs. Dwayne the Rock or such, fuck all of that. Fuck.

          • MC Planck

Mandatory voting works. It turns out all that is required to make democracy function is a $50 fine.

The issue isn’t that the electorate suddenly becomes better educated. The issue is that most people are reasonable enough that, when compelled to pay attention, they do OK. Just like jury duty.

What Australia’s mandatory voting program does most of all is change attitudes. Voting is not a sacred privilege only to be given to special people; it’s just part of your job, like taking out the trash or mowing the lawn. It’s maintenance on the government you own. That change in attitude changes behavior.

The politicians know that they can’t survive off of hyper-partisan fringe electorates. So they change their behavior too.

The government makes voting easier, because you can’t fine people for not doing something while making it difficult to do it. All those voter suppression laws would go out the window if voting were mandatory; if nothing else, they would be challenged in court and struck down for an undue burden.

I can assure you Australians are not significantly more intelligent than Americans (though they are less racist, despite having a “Whites Only” policy only 50 years ago). If it works here, it can work there.

          • HooverVilles

not going to happen in US america.

            not. gonna. happen.

for one thing, the duck dynasty rejects will see cumpulsory voting as an assault on their constitutional right not to be fucking bothered, and will offer second-amendment-type corrective behavior to anyone who attempts to violate that sacred, non-existent right.

if you live here, you know this is true.

          • MC Planck

The Duck Dynasty crowd will object because they know it means more blacks voting.

It’s about time the American government stop genuflecting to home-grown terrorists. Let them get all 2nd Amendment. That’s what the FBI is for. Literally.

          • redblack

gotta disagree. the duck dynasty rejects and meth cooks and squirrel hunters and hoarders in the woods and survivalists and shit wouldn’t support it because They Will Not Be Told What To Do By No Fuckin’ Socialist Politician Or Community Organizer Or Whatever.

they’ll keep blacks and mexicans down the same way they always have:

            fear and intimidation.

but i admire your strength of conviction. i just think this country is too far down the road to dystopia, and that it won’t be coming back.

i’m not giving up, mind you, but at this point i think major, meaningful changes are only possible with violent insurrection against the folks who own our homes, cars, and means of communication. we’re too fractured and distracted.

          • MC Planck

The Duckheads don’t need to support it. They can just pay the $50 fine every two years.

I don’t think violent insurrection will lead to more freedom. It will only make things worse. That said, I kind of agree with you that time is running out for the other options. Reagan and Bush II were bad, but this is categorically different.

On the other hand, backlash is a powerful thing. The country could finally tilt to the left after all of this.

        • Sakonyachen

I admire the principle, but I fear apathetic Americans and those who don’t vote on principle will eventually elect Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse by accident. Possibly even Huey P. Newton. I’m not opposed to Newton of course, but I have doubts about his fitness to serve.

One reason not to panic: Mueller has been sharing info with the NY AG, Eric Schneiderman. If Mueller is shut down, Schneiderman is ready to grab the baton, because most of what Mueller is investigating can also be prosecuted on the state level (almost everything prior to the election happened at Trump Tower). Same holds true for most pardons Trump might issue. Mueller is nobody’s fool. He went into this with both eyes wide open, and he’s prepared for the worst.

  • fawkedifiknow

I trust Mueller and the Democrats on the Congressional investigative committees are taking exhaustive notes and keeping copies of everything they have turned up so far. If, or when, the Trump protection racket shuts either or both down, they need to release it all – the next day. Including the Head Shithead’s tax returns for the last 30 years.

    • dieselox

      This. Saturday Night Massacre Insurance.

      I keep thinking
Mueller’s made it crystal clear to everyone exactly what will happen if he gets the ax.

If I were him, I’d have already set up a dead man switch of sorts: if he does not check in every day by X:XX o’clock EVERY DAMN DAY, open the envelope, follow the instructions to the secret encrypted servers duplicated all over the world, open them all up for the world to see. Every last damn bit of it.

Day 1, he set something like that up, I would wager a lot on that.

  • 52camellias

Maybe I’m naive, but how much good is the House investigation doing, considering who sits on it? Trey “Benghazi!!!” Gowdy and Devin “I’m Still Eager To Embarass Myself Publicly” Nunes? Sending staffers over the Xmas break and for the rest of 2017 sounds like the normal Congressional bone-ass laziness to me. As for Speaker Ryan shutting Mueller down, I don’t think someone who is thinking about leaving in 2018 wants the firing of a special counsel to be the highlight of his career. But I’m bookmarking the “Take to the Streets” website anyway. Just in case.

    • Maggielle

I keep starting then canceling responses because I keep Going There…but I don’t want to hurt or kill people, nor do I want local business owners to have to clean up broken glass, or have working people lose wages while the cafe or store is closed. Fucking scruples. But I have ’em and they’re mine and I have to plan accordingly.

      WE HAVE FOUND THE LEAKER

  • NorthernSaber

Trump is going to fire Mueller the weekend before Christmas. Congress will be away, the national media will be as well, we’ll all be trying not to strangle our RWNJ relatives at various holiday gatherings- and on that Saturday it will happen. The media attacks this week gave the committee cover to not call any more witnesses. That will be seized upon by Trump as pretext that “the investigation is complete” and that Mueller is no longer needed. When we hit the streets Hannity and the other useful fucksticks will trot out the “well, it was biased anyway” bullshit, and before the ink is dry on that clusterfuck of a tax bill all this will be over. Feel free to convince me I’m wrong.

    • sillyclucker

If Trump fires Mueller, what will happen with the investigation ? CAN Trump fire Mueller or does he have to persuade somebody else to do it ?

      • cheetojeebus

Someone else. see Saturday Night Massacre.

        • sillyclucker

That’s what I thought. Is it a given that it will happen if Trump says to do it ?

          • Begin Anew Day

He may have to fire/plow through a few hierarchical positions before he finds a willing tool.

          • Peripatetic Poltroon

Yes. He’ll have to fire Rosenstein and replace him with a willing sycophant. But yeah, he has the legal authority to do that. And to then pardon everyone in sight. Given the utter capitulation of the GOP to the moneyed class, this seems more and more likely. I predict a riot.

          • cheetojeebus

no, his discharge has to be lawful-just cause etc. But that probably won’t stop em, the rat bastards.

    • 52camellias

The shouty-pouts of Fox newsies aside, the actual process to get Mueller fired would be too long for Trump’s attention span. Although Drumpf lacks the intelligence to comprehend the potential results of his own Saturday (Christmas) Night Massacre, people outside his circle know what would happen to their careers. Not even Yertle wants to risk that kind of backlash.

I think we have an ace in the hole. If the Republicans succeed in shutting down the Mueller investigation, NY Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is more than able to issue indictments against Kushner, the Trump kids, and even Trump himself. And Trump will not be able to issue pardons, because he can only do so for people convicted of federal crimes.

And if the fewmets hit the windmill, we should organize logistical support for the folks who surround the White House with pitchforks and torches. Many of us wouldn’t be able to go, but we can help.

I don’t see that what happens in the HIC tells us much of anything about Mueller’s work. Ending the House investigation doesn’t affect the Special Counsel’s Office. Did anyone seriously believe much would come from Nunes’s committee?

    • eddi_the_Bad_Hombre

It gives the rest of the Rebs and the Orange Orang an excuse to say “it’s all a scam.”

      • SineDie

I tell them, good luck with that. We still have the federal courts. When Nixon fired Cox, the Special Prosecutor’s Office was officially closed for several days. Like Mueller, Cox had a staff and Cox told to just stay in the building and keep working, which they did. A feral court intervened. As a lawyer, I would have real problems with Trump firing Mueller. That’s obstruction, one, and he would be pardoning himself, which he has no power to do.

There may be even less support for firing Rosenstein than Mueller.

My money is on Mueller. He is not the least bit intimidated. His firm, WilmerHale, has a tradition of exceptionally tough litigators. Everyone should also be aware that this investigation has gone global, with the German govt going after Deutsche Bank. Like Trump says, it’s complicated.

I didn’t see Carlin on that. What were his?

          • redblack

carlin’s “7 dirty words” bit influenced an FCC court decision.

            https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_dirty_words

“shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, and tits.”

          • Sneezy

            Um…tits doesn’t even belong on the list…

          • redblack

carlin wrote that bit in 1976, i think. (no i didn’t google it, because reasons.) pretty sure the FCC case was in 1977.

he was talking about words you can’t say on tee vee. funny thing is, it became the standard… for around 30 years.

but if you want to hold a séance and tell george carlin that “tits” doesn’t belong there, have at it.

          • shane smith

            Which he pointed out…

          • redblack beat me to it but you gotta find it and listen/watch his “7 words you can’t say on television” stand up bit, and then his follow up “additional three words you can’t say.” Carlin was always fantastic at breaking down words and figures of speech in a way that was so damn funny and the “7 words” is one of those brilliant routines he did. “It’s a proud word…I AM FUCK! FUCK OF THE MOUNTAIN!”

          • redblack

personally, “you drive like old people fuck – slow and sloppy” was my all-time favorite.

          • You could go on and on with Carlin references, so much of what he did was timeless and still relevant to today’s various situations we all deal with.
Disagree with his “I stay home” on election day bit though, esp after this past Tuesday.

(Ever seen an atheist pray?)

When I faced suicide in 1966, I decided that I would hang on to see how it all turns out. Mostly it has been positive – I will be really, really pissed if I hung on this long to find out that the US self-destructs.

Kitteh is purring for my attention.

          • george lastrapes

I have slowly come to believe the multiverse hypothesis is in some sense correct. There is at least one frame/trajectory, and probably many, in which you and I are complaining about how boring (how lacking in bad news)- how boring the current Clinton administration is. And then I have to slap myself to remind myself that that is no reason for complacency.

          • Grumpy Old Man

Even if we stick with binary decisions, we would still be left with an infinite number of infinite universes (Aleph 1 is an infinity of infinities whereas Aleph null is just the standard infinity:
Proplem: an infinitely large hotel is full with an infinite # of guests and an infinitely large bus pulls up with an infinite # of tourists – how do you handle it:
Answer: Have the porters move all the guests from the even #ed rooms to the odd #ed rooms to allow for the influx of guests [I would suggest an infinitely large tip])
            https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/be7a280239997b1948e77d19c782cb3d2fc146bf74173d53d71f78b22f068368.gif

          • george lastrapes

But no number in Aleph-Null is infinite. Start the list, 1,2,3,4,… and keep going. At no point do the numbers on the list become infinite. There is no finite number (a) such that the successor of (a) is infinite.
Perhaps we don’t have a vocabulary rich enough to reflect the shades of meaning of infinity.
Consider this: Take a list of reals 0>r>1 (infinite, although provably incomplete, so I think that I can speak of ‘a list’ with this proviso) and simply ‘mirror’ it so that the decimal point ends the number instead of beginning it. This is nothing other than the infinite numbers which would inhabit Aleph-Null if it contained infinite numbers.
Consider also the entropy of the visible universe at a Planck time in the current epoch (imagine ‘~’s where appropriate): 2^10^122.This, per holographic bound hypothesis. The Planck age of the VU now? 10^61. Make that large as you want for an older universe. Then 10^500 for the ‘ST’ landscape. Multiply by those for an idea of the number of possible universes.
These numbers are numbingly huge, but not infinite. Similar to Tegmark’s scheme, as I seem to recall it.. I think of them as Aleph-Null universes. I’ll throw this in: if there is a God, He would reside in- or simply BE- an Aleph of one or more.
And thanks for recalling to me Gamow’s book “One, Two, Three, Infinity!” My Father gave it me for my eighth birthday. Have’nt had it in my hands for >60 years! How time flies.

          • Grumpy Old Man

I am going to work my way through your response because I find it intriguing. We may have a communication problem with Aleph Null since the common definition is : “Aleph Null is a countably infinite set” sometimes referred to as ‘infinite cardinality’ meaning that, yes, each unit in the set is countable but there is no upper limit to the countability and so an infinitely full motel can handle an influx of an infinite # of new guests because there is also an infinite # of odd numbers and so even numbers – no matter how you slice up the cardinal numbers, there is an infinity there.

Just use his official title: POTUS — Pendejo Of The United States.

          • Jim Johnson

            I prefer the descriptive POSPOTUS.

There won’t be JUST one demonstration in DC. They will be everywhere. To date N. Dakota is the only state that doesn’t have one pre-organized. Delaware and Rhode Island are the only states with just one (Dover & Providence, natch). Other states have a least a few or many (California has about 15 scheduled). There is one set for Paris and I wouldn’t be surprised if London is next. The link below shows how to find one closest to you. Demonstrations will be scheduled for 5 p.m. on any day Mueller is fired before 2 p.m. ET. If he’s fired after 2, the demonstration will be held the next day at noon. Several Congressional reps have said that if Trump fires Muller it will probably be when Congress is on Christmas break so most pols will be out of DC and citizens will be busy with their holiday activities.

    THIS, worries me.

  • NotALiar

I’m starting to worry that future generations will be reading about this stuff in a history book as a lead up to something really nasty happening.

Last night I was watching a DVD released in 2009. At the beginning there was a long promo for the documentary about Obama’s 2008 campaign. It reminded me how much everything has changed in the last year. You get so mired in all the bullshit that comes out of Washington every single day, it’s easy to forgot just how terrible the changes have been. Made me feel sick to watch that trailer.

    • House0fTheBlueLights

If they’re reading about it, then it apparently all turned out ok.

        Good point.

Nope. Jill Stein voters were not fed Russian propaganda via Russian bots. Jill Stein was perfectly willing to do that herself (with assistance from Libertarian Greenwald and his army of Ron Paul adoring flying monkeys): https://timeline.com/ron-paul-russia-hacking-e248f87f38f2

Then we have the issue of Russian intelligence using NSA technology to undermine US Intelligence and to interfere with elections worldwide (promoting fascist candidates throughout the West: http://thehill.com/policy/cybersecurity/354068-russian-hackers-stole-nsa-hacking-tools-using-kaspersky-antivirus-report

Which brings us right back to Greenwald, Snowden, and Assange (Ron Paul’s Libertarian peeps each and every one): https://www.nsfwcorp.com/dispatch/libertarian-bum-fights/

And then we have THIS (the Green Party – Libertarian alliance – two parties diametriaclly opposed to one another making common cause against the Democratic Party even in the face of a far- right takeover in the 2016 election): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTCr3dtDv1o

And HOW exactly did this come to be? Let us go back to Greenwald’s meetup with Socialists (the Bernie Bros): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uulv4ve6RJ8

There you go, you freaking ignorant dupes.

I could go on… and on… about how Jill fucking Stein ended up at a table with Putin and Mike Flynn to help elect Trump (deliberately) and why Bernie and Co. continue to spew “revolution” BS.

This is treason. And Ive been warning you assholes from day 1. Mueller will get there eventually.

Republicans trying a reverse “but her emails”.

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-transition/trump-allies-say-mueller-unlawfully-obtained-thousands-of-emails-idUSKBN1EA0QF

Mueller having Trump emails is wrong, apparently.

    • pd1648

At least Mueller didn’t get them from Russia through WikiLeaks.

    • Deborah Ujevich

Can’t say enough that Mueller has TRANSITION emails. Not CAMPAIGN emails. It is, I believe, a crucial distinction. I think that there are other high ranking GOP members who have something to fear from that.

So how did Amazon fuck with your donation system? deliberate? to undermine your most excellent voice during this annis horribiis? It’s important to know, if you can share – I don’t want to support them if they are trying to silence your voice.

    • House0fTheBlueLights

I think they only allow the “Donate” button for nonprofits. This is legit, to keep people from thinking their donation to a for-profit entity is tax deductible, and to keep said entities from implying that (not that Wonkette did that by any means). Again, entirely legit. What Amazon needs is a “subscribe” button or something else, as well as being more clear upfront about who can use it, because otherwise they’re just losing revenue.

  • ExecutorElassus

I’m starting to wonder just how bad it might get.

Let’s imagine, for example, that the House does shut down its investigation. Then, the WH does a Saturday Night Massacre, firing Rosenstein, moving Sessions to run … fuck it, State or something?, and then puts a head of DOJ in to fire Mueller. Then Mueller’s replacement does exactly what Mueller planned for in this very likely scenario, and submits a report outlining all the ways the WH obstructed justice, and Congress does … nothing. And people protest in the streets, every day, and still nothing.
To go through with impeachment proceedings, the Dems would need 2/3 in both chambers. That’s not going to happen (they might not even manage a majority in the Senate, Dale Cooper Dougie Jones notwithstanding), so what then?
Let’s not forget, people have been protesting, in the Capitol itself outside certain Reps’ and Senators’ offices, for weeks now because of the upcoming vote to gut the ACA. That’s become the new normal. Thousands camping out in front of the Capitol after this is going to become, I suspect, just part of the way things are now, once this all goes down.
Is it really going to get that bad?

    • pd1648

      Probably worse.

    • MANGO CRIMES

      General strike.

    • Deborah Ujevich

I could be waaay off base with my pursuit of something Flynn related. See the series of comments/replies directly above this for what I found. I think it can indeed get very bad. And I think it’s notable that Mueller has TRANSITION, not CAMPAIGN, emails. I think that means there are other high ranking GOP members with asses needing cover, just like it’s now clear that Nunes saw his own name in the material that was unmasked, which is why he was such a loon about all of that.

    • Teto85

      Pitchforks, torches and guillotines?

  • Deborah Ujevich

I’m wondering about THIS. It’s from CourtListener, Flynn docket. Tried to purchase the brief & cannot. Does anyone know anything about it? I’m not a lawyer, but it sure looks to me like someone filed on behalf of Flynn – his son? – and is trying to get evidence related to Trump AND HIS FAMILY excluded. And I wonder if this is Flynn trying to welsh on promise to testify against Trump because of a pardon promise. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/ede1beeb57eb16ff35ecbd499530b9ddc76bced4eb5f68aa8443f0f88a837160.png

i’m on court listener now for work – got any case numbers for me? there may be other ways.

      • Deborah Ujevich

That’s what I was wondering. This is Flynn’s criminal case…# is 1:17-cr-00232. I periodically check these dockets & I seriously just Google “courtlistener Flynn” & it brings up the whole docket. THANK YOU. I’m dying to know about this, watch it be nothing.

        • Dept. of Space Tacos

          do you know which court?

          • Deborah Ujevich
          • Dept. of Space Tacos

            yes.

          • Deborah Ujevich

Thanks for your effort. I’m concerned that this is part of effort to get rid of Mueller.

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

well, it’s weird and i’m only a paralegal student, but a motion to intervene and motion to file an amicus brief are two very different things – the bits after the motion (fruit of the poisonous tree, sitting president and his family) make me think it’s a friend of the court filing made by a nutjob – it happened on the 9th Circuit appeal re: the muslim ban.

            I wouldn’t worry too much.

          • Deborah Ujevich

I’m actually wondering if the nutjob is Flynn’s goddamn son. My dad was a detective, so I’m familiar with exclusionary doctrines, this one in particular. I’m still not convinced that this isn’t an attempt to weasel out of testifying because he thinks Trump can & will pardon him.

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

absolutely could be. I just find that wording strange.

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

p.s. since he pled – it’s possible these are letters to recommend the judge go easy in sentencing – that’s a gut feeling, not based on any experience whatsoever.

          • Deborah Ujevich

Two things that occur to me: it’s my understanding that a party can file to intervene but if that’s denied they can then participate via amicus curiae; in both cases, the filer GENERALLY has an interest in outcome but is a nonparty to proceedings. Also, yes. He pleaded. But his deal is supposedly contingent upon his cooperation with Mueller, of which testimony against Trump, et al, was a part. If Trump is now making pardon sounds, perhaps there’s an effort to weasel out of that.

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

okay – you know much more about the process than I do! (and sorry, I couldn’t find anything, but bookmark that special interest page).

          • Deborah Ujevich

No, you were a big help. I’m not in the legal profession but with a cop dad, a Con Law uncle & legal-adjacent past career (contract analyst), I love this stuff. And I’m a concerned citizen! I put NOTHING past these fucks. The fact that this was denied by judge doesn’t mean they’re not trying everything & anything to subvert Mueller. The deal was struck in front of Contreras, who recused, so perhaps they were trying for leniency from Sullivan.

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

i think that last part is a decent hypothesis.

Also, (cool!) I too am a law nerd (although, less so as I go on, lol), so nice to officially meet ya Deborah.

            : D

          • Deborah Ujevich

Many thanks, nice to meet you also! CourtListener has ALL the good PDFs. And as a law nerd, you’ll be gobsmacked at the staggering genius of the Mueller team. He’s my personal Jesus. The stuff about Manafort ghostwriting that op-ed is great, FBI agent statement included. It’s also evident that Mueller is being super cautious & as accommodating as possible. He is totally protecting his investigation even when it’s yielded actual charges.

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

i found courtlistener cause i’m in between semesters, so I lost lexis-nexis access and they haven’t given it to me at my internship and I”m asked to do research regularly.

Also, you should pop over to the last thread of the day – there is MUCh speculation about mueller and co. and the case and stuff.

          • Deborah Ujevich

            Which thread is that?

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

            gah, sorry, just seeing this.

Last thread of the day – is the open thread (cause that’s what us late nighters were using it for).

          • Dept. of Space Tacos

so, my first work around didn’t, er, work. Most courts have a page for filings on high interest cases, here is D.C.s – manaforts case is on there, but not flynns:
