Army Sgt. La David T. Johnson (pic via GoFundMe)

Oh for all the gods’ sakes! Is this Donald Trump’s new worst week ever as president? Maybe!

Trump’s latest self-inflicted face-stabbing started Monday, when, after 12 days of silence about the four soldiers we lost in Niger (and why we lost them in the first place), he lied and said Obama and the other previous presidents (Obama!) didn’t call the families of troops killed in action as tremendously as Trump calls those families. Then he doubled down on his stupid, easily disproven lie, because he is an asshole like that. Tuesday afternoon, in a move that should have made things better, but didn’t because Donald Trump fucks up everything he touches with his tiny hand-like appendages, Trump decided to call the wife of one of those four soldiers.

It did not go well:

President Donald Trump told U.S. Army Sgt. La David Johnson’s widow Tuesday that “he knew what he signed up for … but when it happens, it hurts anyway,” when he died serving in northwestern Africa, according to U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Florida.

“Yeah, he said that,” Wilson said. “So insensitive. He should have not have said that. He shouldn’t have said it.”

What the fuck is wrong with him? WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH HIM?

Trump reportedly spoke to the widow, Myeshia Johnson, who is now the single mother of a 6-year-old and a 2-year-old and pregnant with a third child, just before she received her husband’s remains at Miami International Airport. Her representative in Congress, Democrat Frederica Wilson, knows all this because she was present, both for the call (it was on speaker phone in the car they were riding in) and for the ceremony.

Rep. Wilson appeared on “Morning Joe” on Wednesday, and oh BOY, Wonkers, do we tell you to watch the video sometimes? WE MEAN IT THIS TIME:

Rep. Wilson said after they got off the phone, Myeshia Johnson said through her tears the worst part was that “he didn’t even remember his name.” As for the first part, Wilson said Trump “was almost like joking” when he said Sgt. Johnson knew what he signed up for, though he guesses the part about him dying sucks.

The Washington Post spoke to Sgt. Johnson’s mother Cowanda Jones-Johnson, who was also in the car and heard the call, and she said, “President Trump did disrespect my son and my daughter and also me and my husband.” She also said nothing about Congresswoman Wilson’s account was wrong.

Before we go through the roof with rage, you should know that Trump says this family’s feelings about the phone call are FAKE NEWS:

Uh huh OK sure. LORDY I HOPE THERE ARE TAPES.

As usual, we will choose to believe the people who are not known pathological liars until the facts on the ground say we should do otherwise.

Is it technically true what Donald Trump said? Only in the sense that yes, the brave men and women who serve in the military know going in that it’s possible they might die for this country, but their families don’t want to hear that when they’re burying their loved ones BECAUSE IT’S FUCKING RUDE AND CRUEL.

Let us see if we can draw you an analogy.

Many people of various religions believe “God has a plan” for our lives. But literally NOBODY except the most brainwashed zealots on earth EVER, upon the tragic loss of a loved one, wants to hear that their loved one’s death was “part of God’s plan.” The only proper response to this statement is 1) “Fuck you,” 2) “Bless your heart,” or 3) smile and walk away while thinking “fuck you” and “bless your heart” in your brain.

Thing is, even people who are bad at the situation we just described (yes, even those assholes) do not walk up to grieving families of people killed in war and say, “Oh well, BING BONG, he knew this might happen! Want to hear about the F-35 airplane? It goes like AIR-PANE! AIR-PANE! And then it disappears because it is invisible!”

Fuck Donald Trump so very much. If he’s incapable of doing serious presidential things like this (and he is, and he’s never going to learn, because he’s a stupid failure) maybe he should outsource them to an actual presidential person, like Hillary Clinton.

Also? fuck “Fox & Friends” and all the other whiny-ass media whiny-asses whining about how Congresswoman Wilson is somehow “politicizing” this by sharing the thing she witnessed with her own eyes and ears. Maybe this wouldn’t be in the headlines if Donald Trump hadn’t tried to feebly score points against his predecessor by saying he was the best at calling bereaved families, like he’s so good at it they’re going to get sick of him calling.

(Well, we guess at least that last part is true.)

If you’d like to channel your rage, a GoFundMe has been set up to serve as a college fund for the Johnsons’ kids. Maybe some good can come out of this after all.

    Trump: “And I have proof!”

    Ron Howard voiceover: “He didn’t.”

  • CutterTeam

Trump’s inner monologue went on to add “If this idiot Negro hadn’t gotten himself killed, I’d be playing golf right now instead of taking the time to make these phone calls and acting like I give a shit about other human beings.”

“Perfect! Somebody phonetically spell out MY-EEE-SHA on an index card for him!”
“Yeah, I don’t think we need to do that for ‘La David,’ do we?”

  • Dept. of Space Tacos

    let teh backtracking begin:

However, an anonymous White House official tells The Sentinel that Trump was simply “misunderstood” when he told Johnson that her late husband “knew what he signed up for” when he joined the Army.

“This president cares deeply,” the official explains. “Maybe he said something that was misunderstood, but he certainly cares about fallen servicemen and women.”

The admission that Trump may have said something that was misinterpreted by Johnson’s family is a contradiction of Trump’s insistence on early Wednesday that he had “proof” that Rep. Wilson was lying about the entire exchange.

And to restore what they consider the natural order: them at the top of the social pecking order. Vicariously, if not in any real sense.

This is exactly how I’ve felt every day since No. 8 — like I’ve been punched, but more to the face than the gut, and I have a black eye. It’s like the whole country, at least the decent parts, are trapped in an abusive marriage.

“She was crying the whole time, and when she hung up the phone, she looked at me and said, ‘He didn’t even remember his name.’ That’s the hurting part. It was horrible. It was insensitive. It was absolutely crazy, unnecessary. I was livid.” -Rep. Wilson

HE DIDNT EVEN REMEMBER HIS NAME. I know we’re all longing for some semblance of empathy, but at this point I’m willing to settle for some basic competency.

    CRAZY. UNNECESSARY. LIVID.

    • DrBigHead

Exactly. I have always had difficulties remembering names. If the asshole had an ounce of humanity, he would have been prepared, even if he had to write it down on a note card.

      • WiscoJoe

Because if you can imagine it, it must exist, by the power of Greyskull, or something. Anyway, point being that this will now happen because you thought of it. Thanks, pal.

      • Michael Smith

Haha you may be on to something. I think there really are people out there getting paid to come up with terrible things like these, and they really have all day to just sit around and do it, and then try it out on internet forums to see what works. https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2017/10/twitter-has-new-rules-for-violent-and-sexual-content/

The details on Twitter’s new plan to enforce violent content are a bit more flimsy. The company says it will be taking action against “violent groups” on the platform and will also take action against content that glorifies violence — for instance, a tweet that says “Murdering makes sense. That way they won’t be a drain on social services” would now fall under Twitter’s enforcement policy.

The phone call to Sgt. Johnson’s widow is what happens when you have a racist Nazi sympathizer as President.

Do you expect a man, who deeply hates black people to spontaneously come up with kind and compassionate things to say to the widow?

There’s part of him that probably instinctively thinks that one dead black guy is one fewer car-jacker to terrorize the streets.

He’s bad enough on normal occasions, but trying to be sympathetic to black people is probably a bridge too far for him.

    • Carpe Vagenda

and not just that, but a widow who made him look bad just by existing. And now everyone is going to want to know why we appear to be running another war nobody’s talking about.

      • gene108

It’s not really a war we’re in. There are issues with Islamic militants in Africa, like Boko Haram and other groups. Obama dispatched several hundred Special Forces soldiers to train African military and police forces to better handle the militants a few years ago.

        The policy continues under Trump.

African soldiers should be on the front lines here. From what I read, U.S. forces rushed into things, without contingency plans.

I’ll wait to see what investigations into how this happen reveal about what went wrong and why.

        • Carpe Vagenda

          OK. Good to know.

Does anyone think that this is anything other than a movie to him?

      • gene108

I doubt in the best of circumstances he understands what others are going through, but it gets compounded here because his racist self has to show compassion for a black man and his widow.

  • OddMan

I saw this AM a reminder of when Trump said this awful statement at his first major speech to a joint session of congress back in Feb. Trump talked about a fallen soldier and said that the grieving widow as well as all of us should be happy because Trump’s line in this speech just got a lot of applause.

“We are blessed to be joined tonight by Carryn Owens, the widow of a U.S. Navy Special Operator, Senior Chief William “Ryan” Owens. Ryan died as he lived: a warrior and a hero, battling against terrorism and securing our nation. (Applause.) I just spoke to our great General Mattis, just now, who reconfirmed that — and I quote — “Ryan was a part of a highly successful raid that generated large amounts of vital intelligence that will lead to many more victories in the future against our enemies.” Ryan’s legacy is etched into eternity. Thank you. (Applause.) And Ryan is looking down, right now — you know that — and he is very happy because I think he just broke a record.

Trump is a psychopath who has absolutely no empathy. He mimics what he think others would say, filtered through his narcissistic personality. And he is an ass.

      • SullivanSt

99.999% of the population would have done that. And yes I know that includes infants who can’t even say mama yet, let alone read. THEY’D DO THAT TOO!

Any functioning member of the human race would not only have a full briefing sheet in front of them while making the call, with the fallen’s name in large bold letters above salient details of their family life, service history and the circumstances of their death, they’d have read the whole thing with scrupulous attention several times over and not told their lackey to start dialing until they were sure they’d memorized it.

When you make these calls you have ONE JOB:

        SHOW
        YOU
        CARE

Donald, you hear that? YOU HAD ONE JOB!

Nobody fails like Donald Trump, believe me.

    • Celtic_Gnome

I’m sorry, but if you are a moron, incapable of expressing empathy, you should get someone else to write down what you should say. Read the fucking card, finish it up with, “I’m sorry, may God bless you and your family,” and hang up the fucking phone!!! It’s not that hard, even a narcissistic, psychopath could do it.

    • alwayspunkindrublic

There’s one narcissistic psychopath we know of who can’t do it.

After offending the widow, he calls her a lair the next day. And Fox makes him the victim. Like my mother once told me, “never feel jealous towards anybody, you don’t know how their life will end.” This clown must mentally torture himself every night with guilt or the need for vengeance after self humiliation.

    • Mr. Blobfish

He’d need a soul for that.

    • shivaskeeper

Guilt? Doubtful. That would imply he did something wrong. It;s never him. Never. It’s always and in all ways someone else that fucked up, not him. The tell is almost almost a variation of “Somebody told me”, or “That’s what I was told so so go ask so and so”.

Even if he could be made to see how screwed up this particular thing is, he would fall back and blame SGT Johnson for getting killed in the first place and putting him on the spot like that.

      • Celtic_Gnome

We got a boss like that once at work. We had a Margaret, two Marians, and a Marilyn. Less than a week after he started, Margaret was at my desk talking to me when he went past and said hello, calling her Marian. She corrected him, and this turned into a five minute conversation which ended with it being her fault he called her by the wrong name.

At the time, I thought it was a really weird expenditure of time and energy for a perfectly reasonable slip-up. Now, I know better.

        • shivaskeeper

Yeah. He sounds reasonable. I’m sure he was a great boss as well and lasted there for a long, long time.

          • Celtic_Gnome

This was at a state agency with an elected official as the head. He came in at the beginning of the first term and was promoted at the beginning of the second term. (Term-limited out after that.)

He went to the private sector after the end of the second term and was escorted out of the building by security a few months after starting there. He had a bit of a sexual harassment problem concerning blondes.

  • Yellerduck

Fuck MSNBC for trying to turn that against Rep. Wilson. You know what? If that’s “politicizing”, then politicize the hell out of it. Sgt. Johnson died in the service of his country, and if it takes one more sacrifice, the politicization of his death, to show people that the ultimate leader of our country is a cruel, crackpot, cheapshit dictator, then so be it. All apologies and condolences to his family.

    • shivaskeeper

He politicized it in the fucking Rose Garden speech with McTurrtle. Then he tried to cover it up by calling, then he absolutely fucked up the call by faking human emotions all wrong and trying to wing it, then when he is called on it, it’s everyone else politicizing it. Both sides I guess?

It, of course, is the death of another human being in service to the country.

If I was a praying man, I would pray he is never at Dover if the next of kin is there to see their family’s remains being transferred. He would lose his fucking mind and attack if the family screamed at him, which does happen. Kelly, McMasters, and Mattis better never let him go there.

      • BrianW

Can you even picture him going to Dover to see those caskets? ‘Cause I can’t.

        • shivaskeeper

Sure I can. Fidgeting around. talking in little side bars to whoever else was there. Attempting to fake some respect and failing at it, but not really caring one way or the other.

          • BrianW

Now I can picture that too. Thanks for nothing.

          • Celtic_Gnome

And Melania would be standing there stone-faced with embarrassment.

          • shivaskeeper

      • YoBunnyBunny

Exactly. The politicizing started when he made that totally unwarranted and heinously uninformed comment about 43 and 44 just to stroke his wounded ego.

        • shivaskeeper

It was about Obama. He tossed in W. as an afterthought for some cover.

        • shivaskeeper

          2nd reply.

Not to bash you, but it was not an uninformed comment. It was an outright blatant, bald faced lie. Uninformed implies he just didn’t know and spoke out of turn with incomplete information or understanding.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of pictures and stories of Obama and Bush both meeting the Next of Kin at Dover, pinning Purple Hearts on the wounded at Walter Reed, comforting the families, being berated by the families, going to graveside memorials at Arlington, and generally taking this part of the duty as the solemn undertaking that it is.

It was a lie. Plain and simple.

You know, this is just we hear this all the time, this is the biased, the left wing media all the time, Chuck, it’s from top to bottom we never hear-
I think you know the media should focus on the wonderful things that their President, and he is their President, is doing including in this phone call, which he didn’t have to make, he didn’t there was no time where he rated any of the women. Any of them, he didn’t. Out of respect. He had no pictures of them, and you know what he said to me? When he hung up the phone after making that very difficult call, and no one gives him credit for how difficult that call is for him, it’s disgusting, but after he hung up he said “Kellyanne, she was crying and so was the mother, and so they, you know, their makeup was probably all over the place, horrible. So they wouldn’t you know, they wouldn’t.”

What he meant, and I love how plain spoken he is, he always says it like it is, what he meant was that because they were so upset they wouldn’t look their best, so it would have been unfair for him to rate them in those circumstances. That’s who the wonderful, warm man I know and work for is, that’s who you never see the media celebrating, a man who wouldn’t- he didn’t get even a single erection talking to those women. And the media says he was being disrespectful. Well, the media’s a disgrace.

If there’s anything that should be a gimme, a no-brainer, an absolutely impossible-to-fuck-up part of the job of POTUS, it should be consoling a dead soldier’s widow. “I didn’t say what that congresswoman said – didn’t say it at all — she knows it,” Trump told reporters. “I would like her to make the statement again because I did not say what she said.”

Turns out Republicans and their media enablers aren’t just shitty to millionaire athletes who dare to take a knee during the national anthem to protest brutal, inequitable law enforcement tactics.

They’re also shitty to valorous young men from really terrible neighborhoods who strive to make something of their lives by embodying the virtues of the national anthem—- wearing their country’s uniform, training to the utmost, and going into harm’s way because somebody, somewhere along the line, told them that it was For Freedom, or whatever. (Note: it’s not for freedom: it hasn’t been for freedom since about 1945. But that’s another story for another day.)

In the eyes of Republicans and their agitprop apparatus, Colin Kaepernick and Sgt. David Johnson are peas in a pod. Black peas, a black pod.

  • Jgb979

You know that’s only the part he overheard. I’m sure there were discussions of his YOUUUGGE election victory, and probably rantings about what ever dumbass things the pinball in his brain was raging about at that moment.

Bad person is still a bad person

  • Stulexington

I can’t help but notice he didn’t call Johnson’s father, just like how he accused Obama of not calling Kelly.

  • mancityRed6

on a early morning call in show, there were people defending tRump about this.
    defending him.
one even said that he spoke the truth because Obama didn’t call a set of parents whose son had died and tried to be very pedantic and wrong that tRump had only said phone calls.
I can’t even with these morons.

    • TimResistit

I am guessing it was some radio ‘morning zoo’ thing with plenty of fart sound effects and the required forced laughter and celebrity impersonations.

      • mancityRed6

actually no, it’s a more serious news show. but it attracts morons, I guess.

  • TimResistit

Who’s the english lady trying out the “both sides do it” shit?

    • miss_grundy

Katty Kay, who writes trash biographies of celebrities. I think she is known for the biography she wrote about Sinatra.

      • TimResistit

I think you are thinking of “Kitty Kelly” as the gossip book writer, tho.

        • miss_grundy

Sorry, my bad. After seeing the video I am happy I no longer live in Manhattan because I would have jumped on a train to get to MSNBC and slap her–without benefit of votes.

      • Bebecca

I think she might be on some British news channel.

    • TheFamilyThalamusPersists

      The ever- obnoxious Katty Kay.

      • OrdinaryJoe

She gets away with so much bullshit because of her fuking Brit accent.

  • miss_grundy

Mark Halperin and Katty Kay need to walk through a guantlet of people armed with ping-pong paddles (that are heavy-duty) and get a good spanking without benefit of votes. Fuckface von Clownstick politicized these phone calls by saying that his predecessors did not engage in this practice, which is an outright lie since ex-Oval Office employees have come forward to counter this bullshit.

That he would say what he said demonstrates that he is a callous idiot, who cannot even engage in the most simple conversation to express his condolences as commander-in-chief. Yet his apologists are willing to let him get away with this shit. This is why I refuse to watch “Morning Joe” because these assholes were Dolt 45’s cheerleaders until September 2016.

    • SnowBomber

Halperin especially deserved a smack by saying multiple times that it was only the Congresswoman’s word, no one else confirmed it, blah blah. Well, now that Sgt. Johnson’s mom weighed in, he can suck it.

I’m looking forward to the voice of annoyed reason this afternoon, Nicolle Wallace. If she has Ned Price on, they’ll rip Trump ten new ones.

      • Catstro

Yeah, but his mom is blah, so clearly her word can’t be believed. I know the common wisdom is to not attribute malice to that which can be explained by stupidity, but I think choosing a black soldier (with a black family, and a black congressperson) wasn’t an accident.

      • Kooolest G

well who are you gonna believe? a car full of people who just lost a son/husband/father in service of our country, or the guy who had the biggest inauguration crowd of all time, PERIOD!

        • laineypc

Probably Sgt. Johnson got himself killed on purpose so that his family would be able to politicize his death. (Sorry if that was insensitive, of course I’m being sarcastic to 45, just so angry all the time at our moronic president’s neverending fuckups and NEVER taking responsibility)

    • eyelashviper

Halperin is one creepy guy, a lying sycophant with not even half a brain, and I bet he has naughty stuff on his computer.

  • An Outhouse for the résistance

Trump prefers soldiers who don’t get killed.

  • akryan

This really confirms for me that this was the first time he’s ever contacted the family of a fallen soldier. Maybe his staff has crafted letters for him and sent them out, but I’m positive that he never made any attempt at anything like that himself.

    • Ellie

There’s no question in my mind.

    • NellCote71

Agreed. But one would hope that they would have included the widow and fallen soldier’s names in the script.

      • Cat Cafe

I’m sure they did, but he couldn’t be bothered to say them, because they were black.

      • laineypc

He shooed them away when they offered him a script. He was so damned sure he could beat 43 and 44 at this.

  • RugzYaBurnt

Guess the only thing to do is re-name Niger “Benghazi” so the Rethugs will care about these *particular* Four Dead Americans.

^^ Yes. DOTARD knew what he signed up for.

    • laineypc

Here’s the thing: I would be willing to give him a little bit more credit if I hadn’t seen him lie repeatedly with my own eyes. If he’s not treated entirely fairly, he has only himself to blame. But I truly think he gaslights himself first, before he tries to do it on the rest of us.
And I do blame that fuckknozzle if he’s created a media/press culture where leaks and unnamed sources are standard. I fear this tendency is going to continue even after the horrible one is gone.

  • C4TWOMAN

Trump’s feeling this one…it really bothers him:

    http://time.com/4987094/donald-trump-david-johnson-james-comey/

Mind, he doesn’t do the sane, sensible thing:
“I apologize for my badly chosen words.”

    Nope… “Totally Fabricated!!!111!1!2!1”

  • andyshelt

You know, I’ve been reading all this shit over the last few days about Trump talking trash about phone calls to military families with the final straw being his gross comments about “he knew what he signed up for”.

I thought even by Trump’s standards this was pretty far out there and why the fuck would he say such a grossly insensitive comment to the widow of a dead soldier.

Thank you Wonkette. Your picture of the soldier in question has completely clarified my earlier confusion as to Trump’s motives in disrespecting his memory.

    • miss_grundy

Because the shitgibbon is an asshole and his parents didn’t even bother to teach him any manners.

I grew up in a blue-collar immigrant family and they taught me how to comport myself in public, my table manners and how to speak to someone, especially during a difficult moment. For all of their money, the shitgibbon’s family didn’t teach him any of these skills and since he is intellectually incurious, he never bothered to at least check out an etiquette book and teach himself.

      • eyelashviper

Even nonsentient bacteria have more manners, ethics, and standards.

    • starfanglednut

      Yup, yup, yup.

    • laineypc

He can only think about things in the context of his own experience, motives etc. He himself got a pass on military service under questionable circumstances, and regardless if heel spurs are legit, he was surely relieved not to serve.

So when he is faced with someone who did sign up knowing they could be killed in service to the country, and that actually happening, he is only thinking “what idiot would do that? He chose it, I don’t have to feel sorry for him or his family”.

I think he probably deliberately chose a soldier of color’s family as a “look at me I’m not a racist” thing.

  • cmd resistor

So now Bill O’Reilly says the media reported Rep. Wilson’s words without any proof and this has the look of a set-up. Why does this guy still have a platform from which to spread garbage?

    • Paperless Tiger

Trump set it up himself, like, “Watch me be the greatest at this”, and then he insulted the grieving widow of a fallen soldier. Could he make it worse if he tried?

      • Jennaratrix

Is that a dare? Because I’m pretty sure he could.

        • Cat Cafe

Wait till we hear what he really calls Cowanda.

    • TundraGrifter

Proof? The lady heard the conversation and reported it. Once again we see the worst thing for President Trump is to accurately report what he said or wrote. Meanwhile, of course, this hero’s family has come out to confirm that Rep. Wilson’s account is accurate.

      Your move, DJT.

      • cmd resistor

So his move was, he hopes she says it again, because he didn’t say it. Which makes about as much sense as most of the shit he says. “Trump, asked by reporters about an earlier tweet saying he had “proof”of what he said, the president said: “let her (Wilson) make her statement again and you’ll find out.” https://apnews.com/6d6856b032854a96ad07314d192e782b?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=AP

  • Marr

It has been updated by the white house, after it was mentioned that there were witnesses, that Trump did say that phrase, but he was just misunderstood.

Saying someone misunderstood your meaning, especially when it is racist, sexist, or otherwise hurtful, is a shade away from victim blaming.

    • starfanglednut

Also too, the President of the United States should be articulate enough to say something understandable.

    • Cat Cafe

Not even a shade away. It IS victim blaming.

  • WotsAllThisThen

You’d think someone who lies as much as Trump does, would be better at it.

    • AnnieGetYerFun

I think only people without money have to be careful about lying well.

      • Cat Cafe

        Well, that’s him, too, though.

  • Jennaratrix

He’s nauseating. I still can’t believe this is my country’s president. Every time I think he’s done the worst thing he possibly can, he does something even worse. I’m out of ways to talk about this and just pray for it to be over. And I’m a fucking atheist.

    • Cat Cafe

Well, the good news is it makes the whole nuclear-bomb thing seem less undesirable

      • Jennaratrix

Only if I go out in the first wave. I’ve already told the husband unit that his first job in the event of an apocalypse, zombie or otherwise, is to take me out humanely because I have no intention of fighting to survive in a post-apocalyptic dystopia.

        • Cat Cafe

On the other hand, it might be a post-apocalyptic utopia, if only the intelligent, thoughtful, plan-ahead type of people survive, which is very possible. We could emerge from the smoking embers to discover all the morons were gone and it was just us. We would be pleasant and polite, we wouldn’t have Twitter, we could gather nuts and berries together. The cats would probably survive, too–they’re smart. So we’d have berries AND cats.

    • redarmyzombie

Jennatrix, just say it with me: “He ain’t my fucking president.”

      • Jennaratrix

Yeah, I went that route for a while, but the thing is – he is. Whether I like it or not. I didn’t vote for him, I didn’t want him, I don’t respect him, but pending Mueller’s investigation and/or the Republicans getting off their asses and impeaching the motherfucker already, he’s the President of the US, I live in the US, ergo… he’s my president. And now I must go puke and scrub my fingers to get the slime of having typed that off of them.

        • redarmyzombie

I hear ya, but on the same token it isn’t just a title. He has a responsibility to lead, and he has failed. Miserably. It was his responsibility to uphold the rule of law and public safety when those Nazis went to Charlottesville and committed vandalism, terrorism, and murder, and he failed. It was his responsibility to direct aid when natural disaster truck across the entire country, and he failed. It was his responsibility to accept the consequences of military actions he ordered, and he failed. It was his responsibility to set aside his ego for five fucking minutes to console the widow of a soldier, and he failed. If he can’t act like he’s the president of the United States for five goddamn minutes, then by god there’s no way in hell I’m gonna treat him as such

These are, of course, just my opinions. Feel free to disregard them, but at this point I’m done; this man is not my president.

          • Jennaratrix

I don’t disregard your feelings, I respect them. We’re all just dealing with this the best we can.

          • redarmyzombie

Oh, um, none of my salt was directed at you, by the by. Just the fucker…

I’m sensing a pattern with Donald Trump:

    a) Attacks on John McCain’s POW status
    b) Attacks on the Khan Gold Star Family – Carl Paladino (his NY campaign manager) implied any Gold Star Family member who supported Mr. Khan was supporting terrorism
    c) STD’s his “personal Vietnam”
    d) Dragging John Kelly’s son into his “evidence” that previous presidents did not acknowledge personally the deaths of military personnel (John Kelly sat at the Gold Star Family Breakfast table with Michelle Obama)
    e) Tells Myesha Johnson “he knew what he signed up for” (that’s not how it works, dammit) – calls her “the wife” – Sgt. Johnson’s Gold Star Mother has now confirmed Rep. Wilson’s statement.

Wingnuttia (/r/The_Donald, Free Republic, &c) are all blaming the woman, calling Rep. Wilson a liar, &c.

When Trump attacked the Khan family, I started wearing my Gold Star Family pin daily. I did not think such a thing could possibly be a symbol of protest.

And no GOP politician has called him out on this latest outrage. NOT A ONE.

My heart aches for La David Johnson’s family’s loss. They are now part of our Family, a group of people we never want to have to welcome another person to.

Following Wednesday’s back-and-forth between Trump and Wilson, Karen Meredith, who lost her son, 1st Lt. Ken Ballard, in Iraq, called the President’s remarks “disgraceful” and “unbecoming.”
“Mr. Trump, stop. Please, just stop,” Meredith, the Gold Star and Military Families coordinator for VoteVets, said in a statement. “This is not about you, it is about them. It is about all of us who lost our loved ones in war. For once in your life, please stop making everything about you. For once in your life, at least pretend to know what empathy is. Gold Star families are NOT political footballs to be used as convenient props for doing self laudatory end zone dances. Trump started this with his whole who does better telephone condolences thing. Stop it you moron, just stop. Our deceased are not Democrats or Republicans, they are heroes of our democracy. Honor them for that and leave the politics out.

Not to go too far OT but I am still pondering what the hell is going on that we have a large allocation of Special Forces on the ground in Niger. Let’s let Sgt. Johnson’s family grieve in peace, nothing we are doing will ever make their pain less. But let’s talk about why our soldiers are in harm’s way in Niger and what the hell the presence of those troops does for American national security. And what does Congress know about this and when did it know?

    • cmd resistor

I did read something about some congressional investigation into I think what happened in this particular incident. I sort of sense there were some screw-ups. That does not really answer the question of why they were there in the first place. I wonder if Trump even knew why.

      • puredog

Oh, I think you can stop wondering about that.

    • James

We have special forces in Niger to help train their army to drive out Boko Haram (which is making incursions across the border from Nigeria).

After Trump’s travel ban included Chad (a US ally), Chad withdrew its troops that are supporting ours and Niger’s.

Trump is doing everything possible to destroy our alliances.

  • clubseal

Reminds me of this funeral I went to in high school for a kid who had killed himself. Basically the preacher’s whole speech was about how we knew the kid was going to hell for committing suicide, and I was so pissed off at the end of it that wanted to spit in his eye. I mean, the parents were there, for Christ’s sake.
My girlfriend at the time was with me, and she was a Christian (I had a phase), and she basically said the preacher was just telling it like it is. Her explanation didn’t help, unsurprisingly.
Of course that was different than the President of the United States doing it, but the effect is the same.

    • Paperless Tiger

To me, that’s not telling it like it is. It’s more like trying to make a point for your team while they’re attending to an injury on the field. It’s a violation. Of course, it’s much worse than that.

      • Natalie Au Natural Hedonist

Yes, that would be kicking them while they are down. Only a shitty human being would do that.

  • Amelia Resists and Persists

Many people of various religions believe “God has a plan” for our lives. But literally NOBODY except the most brainwashed zealots on earth EVER, upon the tragic loss of a loved one, wants to hear that their loved one’s death was “part of God’s plan.”

Why, why, why do people fucking do this? I heard it from 15 or 20 different people in the days after my mom died. In my mind, those people are just as bad as the ones telling her how great she looked after five months of chemotherapy-related weight loss. Like fuck you, you’re fucking trash.

    Ugh.

    • laineypc

So sorry for your loss and the suffering that cancer put your mom through. God’s plan is pretty sucky if you ask me.

    • Persistent Demme

That happened a lot when my dad died years ago.
Things like: “he’s in a better place” and “part of God’s plan,” seem like asinine things people feel like they have to say, when they can’t think of anything else.
People seem to rely on platitudes and rituals in times like this.
I think (hope!) their hearts are in the right place, and there’s no point in arguing with them, (didn’t have the energy anyway).
My favorite condolence card, was one that said: “Every life is a gift.”
      Indeed.
      So sorry for your pain.

    • Cat Cafe

I’m so sorry for your loss. It has been two years since my mom died and I still miss her every day. I try to feel that the depth with which I miss her is an expression of how fiercely we loved each other, and how strong and vivid her spirit was, and in that way she is really still with me and always will be. I hope you can feel that too. Cancer is a wicked beast.

Death brings out the worst in some people–they are so terrified they don’t know what to say. It really reveals who is strong and who is weak, who is kind and who is heartless and who is just clueless. In most cases they are well-meaning but simply are too weak and small to think of something more appropriate to say; in other cases they are too selfish and self-obsessed and scared for themselves to summon the courage to be more appropriate. I’m not religious at all but people often said “I’ll pray for your mom” and I came to see that as a kindly meant sentiment– “I care, and I’m thinking about your mom” but that’s so very different from someone idiotically thinking “it was PLANNED this way.”

Hugs and all my sympathies. Really, the grief is part of the love. Her spirit will always be with you.

    • Natalie Au Natural Hedonist

I feel for you and know there isn’t really much you can say to comfort someone when you have lost your Mom, the one person that loves you unconditionally. I hope you have a good support in others who knew and loved her as well to speak about and share memories. ( I lost dad in 2000, and mom in 2001, I still miss them.) I wish you healing and comfort for your loss.

Reading about this story on other outlets today that showed pics of Trump whining and petulant. He was forced to make these calls and it pissed him off so the pathetic toddler had to act out.

The President and Trump Nation know that those who get captured as POWs or die in battle are not real heroes.

  • jowgajen
  • laineypc

Another example of Trump not knowing when he needs some guidance. Most of us know when we are having trouble finding the right words in a difficult situation. Trump has the benefit of a bunch of staffers who could have spoon fed him the right words, but he chose to fuck it up. He probably thought he did great until he got all the blowback, and now, instead of saying “My condolence words were the best of any president” he has to deny he said them and in so doing admit they were bad.

    • Cat Cafe

I’m willing to bet he DID have staffers who fed him “the right words,” but his mental acuity isn’t sharp enough to retain any of them.

      • cmd resistor

Including the name of the dead soldier.

      • laineypc

I just saw a video clip that was suggesting there was a body double for Melania standing beside him while he was giving a speech. He had said something like “…and Melania, who is here with me…” like of course it wasn’t blaringly obvious she was standing right beside him, why would he say that?

The person was using his statement about Melania to argue that it was a slip of the tongue, he was sort of protesting too much (see, this person is not a body double, she’s my real actual wife, why would you think that she was a body double, wait, nobody said that? Well nevermind, forget I said anything”)

…but I think he was just checking in, as he’d forgotten for the moment whether she was there or not, and was reassuring himself that yes, in fact she was there.

        • Petunia Cat

I’m sure that’s exactly what it was. He shows so many signs of being just a little bit out of it. It’s dementia. Plus he’s a scummy asshole.

I’m almost willing to give him a pass on saying the stupid shit. Well meaning people say stupid shit all of the time. Just ask any woman who has ever had a miscarriage. However, what is inexcusable and egregious is the fact the he did not call Mrs. Johnson by name or say the name of her husband. A nice really nice touch, in an effort to be sincere, would have been to ask about her two children – BY NAME.

      I really hate that fucker.

      • James

There is a difference between “random person trying to offer sincere condolences” and the President of the United States.

Not to mention this whole thing started with a question that had nothing to do with whether he had made phone calls.
“We should point out here Trump was not asked about Obama when this issue of four US soldiers killed in Niger came up Monday. He was asked by CNN’s Sara Murray why he hadn’t mentioned the deaths of four American service members nearly two weeks after it happened. The circumstances around the deaths of the soldiers in Niger is under review and information about the deaths has become available slowly. Read Barbara Starr’s reporting about the ongoing review of the attack and the investigation into what went so horribly wrong.
The deaths and his public silence were the context of Murray’s question to Trump. Not whether he had called the families. …”.Murray: Why haven’t we heard anything from you so far about the soldiers that were killed in Niger? And what do you have to say about that?”

White House says there is no recording of Trump’s call with soldier’s widow
This morning, President Trump has “proof” that Rep. Frederica Wilson’s account of his phone call with a fallen soldier’s widow was “fabricated.” Wilson, who was with the widow when she took the call, said Trump said her husband “knew what he was getting into.”
So, what exactly is that “proof?” Are there recordings?
“No, but there were several people in the room,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said, adding that Trump’s Chief of Staff John Kelly was there when the call happened. http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/18/politics/trump-latest/?lf-content=220598135:lb-post-f1ed41b4c7efb04273a79485bb6ad478@livefyre.com&hubRefSrc=permalink

    • What, oh brother of a fallen soldier. What is he doing for Gold Star Families?
Also, I do not think a brother really fits that bill seeing as it is generally spouse children or lacking that, parents, not random brothers.

      • James

Gold Star Family members are the direct family of a fallen service member in combat. They consist of parents, siblings, and children.

Of note, Mrs. Johnson’s two children (and her yet-to-be-born child) are Gold Star Family members as well.

This reminded me of a pic he posted of his visit to Las Vegas victims. A friend and I had wondered what we would do if we were in that situation and Trump wanted to visit us. Then I saw this pic: Wounded person/kid in hospital bed with a teddy bear; her family crammed into a corner at the back of the bed. Trump and Melania standing on the other side of the bed, obviously posed and smiling, no contact with the wounded person at all and in fact standing far enough forward that their backs were to her.

“I probably would have hung up on him,” Christina Ayube said bluntly.

Sgt. Ayube, an army medic was on patrol when an elderly man approached him

“President Obama was there when the remains returned to Dover and
he saluted his casket,” Ayube said. “I got a letter and a personal note
    from him later,” she added.

“My son was a medic. He didn’t sign up for that,” Ayube said in response to the president’s comments about Johnson. “I somewhat hoped when this president took office he would realize the gravity of his job and wouldn’t act so juvenile. It’s either
he has no empathy or he just thinks he’s above us all and we’re here

That article was pretty interesting. But hey, the White House said today the check was in the mail (although it wasn’t in the letter the dad did receive.)
They talked to some families of other soldiers who died. One father who did get a call: “The grieving father said he then spoke at length about his son’s love for the Army and his determination to become a Ranger, a distinction he earned at age 19. About midway through the phone call, the elder Thomas shared with Trump that he had voted for him, and “that got him on another tangent” that extended the conversation for about 10 minutes,” the father said. The president then spoke about his work in office and “the strides that he’s made in the short time he’d been president,” Thomas said.”
Just wow. Extended another 10 minutes talking about himself, it sounds like. I am sure that was a great comfort.

    Executive Mansion,
    Washington, 21st November, 1864.

    Dear Madam,

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of Freedom.

    Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

    A. Lincoln.

If Kelly had any morals and self respect now would be the perfect time to resign and to do so citing this issue as the reason would, I believe, be the final nail in the coffin of this shitshow of a presidency. If he went on to blame Trump for using his dead son as a political shield that would be immensely damaging to Trump.

Even the lying morons at Fox News would find it difficult to spin that one in Trump’s favor.

His mother warned Dennis to ‘stay away from the Trumps’ as they didn’t want him ‘beaten up’ by the family bully.

Another local child, Steven, now a 66-year-old doctor, said he never forgot Trump, a ‘loudmouth bully’, once jumping off his bike and pummelling another boy. The disturbing image remained in his brain decades later, he said, because ‘it was so unusual and terrifying at that age’.”
