John Cole over at the nice Balloon Juice website fucking called it. A couple hours ago, he published a thing noting that the front page of CNN featured the image just below, which linked to Chris Cillizza, the stupidest hack in the entire kingdom of hacks, doing a #HotTake on the awful Harvey Weinstein sexual assault revelations (which are getting awful-er by the hour) by making it all about how nasty woman Hillary Clinton still hadn’t answered the hard-hitting #journalism question, “Do you think rape and sexual abuse are bad?” Goddamn her for not getting back to Chris Cillizza in a timely manner!

Screengrab stoled from Balloon Juice

Cole noted exactly what Cillizza’s game is here:

Make no mistake, this is no “analysis” as he has it labeled. And the thing you need to realize is Cillizza KNOWS that Clinton doesn’t support rape and sexual assault, he just wants make her respond. It’s him using his forum to make her jump — he might as well be saying “Dance, mad bitch, dance,” because we all know that if she does respond, Cillizza’s next piece will be “what took her so long” and “was she sincere” and so on.

Well wouldn’t you know it, but not long after Cillizza hit “publish” on the LiveJournal trash he inexplicably gets paid the big bucks to produce, Hillary Clinton made a statement on Harvey Weinstein:

“I was shocked and appalled by the revelations about Harvey Weinstein,” Clinton said in a statement through her spokesman Nick Merrill. “The behavior described by women coming forward cannot be tolerated. Their courage and the support of others is critical in helping to stop this kind of behavior.”

Good. We done here? NOPE, because what did Cole say up there about how Cillizza’s next piece would be “what took her so long”? The only thing he got wrong is that Cillizza didn’t write a “next piece,” he merely CHANGED THE FUCKING HEADLINE OF HIS ORIGINAL PIECE to reflect that Clinton had finally acceded to his wishes by releasing a statement, but that she had done so INCORRECTLY:

Hey, what can he say? He’s a one-trick pony, and it’s a dumb fucking trick.

Also, he haaaaates Hillary Clinton for some reason, just like he hates Nancy Pelosi for some reason. We’d call it a weird manifestation of deep-seated sexism possibly rooted in feelings of severe inadequacy, but … nah fuck it, why not let’s just call it that!

Now, we know what’s likely rolling around in that weird-shaped head of his. Since Cillizza went to the Chuck Todd School For Kids Who Can’t Journalism Good And Want To Learn How To Do Other Stuff Good Too, this is probably his proof that BOTH SIDES DO IT, because hey, President Donald Trump might be an admitted sex slimer, but did you hear about Harvey Weinstein? AND EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY, #WhatAbout Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama BUT MOSTLY HILLARY CLINTON, who didn’t comment on the Harvey Weinstein allegations on Chris Cillizza’s holy schedule?

Jesus man, go fuck yourself.

On Monday, we noted all the men on the internet blaming all the various women for the actual sex crimes committed by Harvey Weinstein. Remember this one?

And this one?

Congratulations, Chris Cillizza, your #HotTakes are equally as hot as the ones leaking out of Julian Assange’s and Dildo Stump Junior’s assholes. Your mom should be proud.

Scanning Cillizza’s Twitter feed for more wisdom, we found something else to make fun of for no other reason beyond pure meanness:

He is proud of … that? Good Christ, Wonkette wouldn’t even award that headline a participation trophy. That’s the sort of hed we put on our drafts while we are writing them, wait, no we don’t, because not even our placeholders are that lame.

When, oh when, will CNN stop pissing away its money on this shit?

and not getting prostate cancer is a good reason to do it now. a dog was abandoned on my friend’s porch and after three days of looking for the owner she had fallen in love and took him in to get his shots and neutered. the vet detected labored breathing and took an xray. the xray showed a prostate tumor so large it had shoved all of his organs into his chest cavity.

Remember when someone said you could grab women by the pussy and get away with it because they were a star?
Remember when someone defended Bill Clinton by saying Paula Jones was too ugly to do anything with?
Remember when numerous women came forward to accuse someone who was running for President of sexual harassment or worse and he responded by calling them liars and said he would sue them and more?
You should, since this was done by Donald Trump, a man you continue to support despite all the stuff that has come out about him.
IMO (and I rarely say this) you are a woman scorned and nothing more.
Bill Clinton is a crappy husband IMO but that doesn’t make one a sexual predator.
And if Michelle has to answer for him, ask me this.
Why are you still standing behind Trump if men like Bill Clinton etc are so evil?
Sorry for the angry rant but I’m tired of someone who Ken Starr didn’t even find credible attacking the Obamas, Chelsea and everyone else while claiming to be a victim.

  • armed_bears

OK… thought experiment: I take it as a given that Hillary is wonderful and not at all responsible for the crap assigned to her, but what good exactly will she do the Democrats in the coming election? Which is to ask, if she did go quietly to the sidelines, where’s the harm? One less strawman for the nasties to attack… I understand she has the same right to express herself as anyone else… but… ummm, value for effort?

Please, begin the excoriations in 3, 2, 1…

    • jesterpunk

Even if she does leave like they want they will begin attacking the next women who might run, see Liz Warren and Kamala Harris.

      • armed_bears

But, by being present, she helps those two how?

        • jesterpunk

She isnt even present though, they are just going to attack her no matter what she does. If she isnt there they will find someone else to attack. The only thing her being there does it removes the attacks from others for a while.

        • Ill-Advised

I get tired of hearing that people should just disappear because they’re “inconvenient” to a point of view.

          Especially women.

This is how the myth of the walled up wife gets played out in the 21st century.

Anyone who is a force of nature and on our side belongs wherever we need her that she is willing to go.

Hillary stood for us, stands with us, and anyone who has a problem with that is one more misogynist pretending to be liberal.

          • armed_bears

But, by being present, she helps how?

          • Ill-Advised

90% of everything is showing up and being available.

The first time a friend died and I was there, I tried to be “helpful.” I washed dishes. The priest gently stopped me. That wasn’t my role. My role was to be present, and with my presence, provided comfort of one who knows, cares, and does not need attention.

An informed, intelligent, experienced listener beats every insecure must-keep-hands-busybody on every situation I can imagine.

      • Zippy W Pinhead

and as Cillizza just showed us, they’ll still attack her- only now for her silence

        • jesterpunk

Yep if she goes away they complain she isnt commenting on everything, if she comments on what they want her too they want her to go away.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

and no matter how she comments, they’ll have an issue with what she said.

    • sarafina

I personally like HRC, and would be glad to see her thoughts in the coming months. Beats the shit out of the regular misogynists. HRC knows the ins and outs of politics, and could provide real insight.

    • tomamitai

She’s making herself a great lightning rod for nut-job ire. That could distract their attention from Harris or Warren or whoever runs in 2020.

    • Zippy W Pinhead

She pretty much already has gone to the sidelines- she wrote a book, did the tour- that’s it. She just got raked over for staying on the sidelines now- WTF is supposed to do?

      • Atheist

She is somehow supposed to fulfill the expectations of every single 300,000,000 Americans and never complain when she gets conflicting demands.

    • HazooToo

She has gone quietly to the sidelines. Assholes just won’t let her stay there, and frankly, it’s nice to hear her voice. And yeah, MAYbe, if she has the will to do it, she can distract the media and wingnuts with her comments so that the candidates moving forward will get through a little easier. But we can’t ask that, she has to choose to do it herself. She’s EARNED her goddamn time off.

i mean, the majority of people did vote for her. and many did so enthusiastically, so she can direct her supporters to vote for democrats in 2018 and 2020.

but, as evidenced by clitzilla, a lot of people continue to have a huge hate boner for her for no reason. so i don’t know how helpful she’ll be…candidates will have to do their own cost-benefit analysis on that.

IMO I think she will retreat more and more from public life and start focusing on the Clinton foundation and her new PAC. she’s always been good at raising money and that’s the best way to further progressive issues in the future.

      • Three Finger Salute

She’s damned if she do and damned if she doesn’t. If she returns to private philanthropy there’ll just be new attacks on the CGI and Hillary PAC or whatever her fundraising venture is called. She’s the Hester Prynne of US politics. Hating on Hillary will be an American pastime for the next 200 years, just like hating on Lincoln has been a thing for, well, about 150. For the sake of her own mental health she and Bill probably should just go into witness protection. I mean, look at what Jimmy Carter does and he still gets shit flung at him for building homes for poor people like a common socialist carpenter.

Also from the NYT: Gaydar has been created; Cillizza asks if inventors seek FAA approval.

Whether he has now created “A.I. gaydar,” and whether that’s even an ethical line of inquiry, has been hotly debated over the past several weeks, ever since a draft of his study was posted online.
Presented with photos of gay men and straight men, a computer program was able to determine which of the two was gay with 81 percent accuracy, according to Dr. Kosinski and co-author Yilun Wang’s paper.

    The backlash has been fierce.

“I imagined I’d raise the alarm,” Dr. Kosinski said in an interview. “Now I’m paying the price.” He’d just had a meeting with campus police “because of the number of death threats.”
Advocacy groups like Glaad and the Human Rights Campaign denounced the study as “junk science” that “threatens the safety and privacy of LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ people alike.”
The authors have “invented the algorithmic equivalent of a 13-year-old bully,” wrote Greggor Mattson, the director of the Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies Program at Oberlin College. He was one of dozens of academics, scientists and others who picked apart the study in blog posts and Tweet storms.

so donald trump – you know – the president? he’s an admitted sexual predator. he has also said fuck all about the california fire or the green berets killed in Niger. And huge swaths of this country are still recovering from deadly hurricanes.

and instead of clitzilla talking about any of that, he is using his platform to focus on a private citizen woman. whose crime is “not being quick enough” in her condemnation of some rando she probably doesn’t know very well.

or if clitzilla specifically wanted to talk about the evils of sexual predators he could have focused on weinstein, trump, ailes, o’reilly, cosby, allen. literally dozens of powerful men who have faced no repercussions for their actions. NOPE, he makes it all about hillary clinton, the one person in that group WHO IS NOT a sexual predator.

    • Three Finger Salute

Not to nitpick, but… you reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally don’t want Dotard to say anything about the country of Niger. “Poooairtoh Rrrrrreekoh” was bad enough, we KNOW how he’d mangle THAT pronunciation…!

Oh, and of course they’re holier-than-thou fundies.

It may have taken Hillary five days to apologize for the behavior of another human being, which she should have known—being Hillary—-would be demanded of her (we still haven’t heard her apology for Pol Pot, but maybe some Washington Post columnist or CNN analyst can put out a call).

But I’m still waiting for this little sack of sorry shit dust Chris Cillizza and the rest of the establishment political press—-the gang that gave us, among others, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Supreme Court Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch, and (gag, vomit) the Cody Jarrett of presidents, Donnie “Top of the World, Ma!” Trump—–to apologize for their own fucking malfeasance, malpractice, depraved negligence, and all around fuckwaddery in their insanely corrosive and useless coverage of last year’s campaign.

“I’ve known Harvey Weinstein for a long time. I’m not at all surprised to see it,” Trump told reporters as he departed the White House on Saturday evening, headed to a fundraiser in North Carolina.
Trump was then asked by reporters about comments that he made in a 2005 interview with Access Hollywood, during which he bragged about grabbing women without their permission and getting away with it because he’s a celebrity. In addition to that video, which was made public by The Washington Post in October 2016, more than a dozen women have accused Trump of sexually touching or kissing them without their permission.
“That’s locker room, that’s locker room,” Trump said, using a shorthand for the lengthier explanation that he gave for the remarks last year — that he was simply speaking crudely as he says men often do in locker rooms. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2017/10/07/trump-on-reports-of-harvey-weinstein-sexually-harassing-women-im-not-at-all-surprised/?utm_term=.31e1dfb1d1fc

Starting in January in the Netherlands, street harassment will be punishable by law. Fines of up to $220.

Meantime, this woman has been taking selfies with her harassers and documenting what they did/said.

Sometimes, I think the Constitution got the free speech thing really wrong. Free speech absolutism more often than not seems to be used to justify the language used by oppressors. In countries that take a more restrictive view of speech, harassment, racism, etc can be officially policed, which I think does have some deterrence value.

      • Three Finger Salute

Too late. In direct opposition to what the Founders wanted, messing with the Constitution is tantamount to retconning the Bible.*

*except if you’re redacting those pesky voting-rights things for blahs, millennials-who-ruin-everything, and stray vaginas.

        • SterWonk

Or the people who want to hold a Constitutional Convention, to basically re-found the US as a Fundamentalist Christian Theocracy.

Aside: How the fuck did it come to pass that someone who is as functionally Biblically illiterate as Donald “Two Corinthians” Trump is the one ushering in Christian Sharia?

    • spangled

that’s awesome! but I want that money paid directly to me please! everytime some moron says “nice ass” to me on the street, I WILL be invoicing them for $220 from now on.

Good for her for being brave and patient enough to do this. However if I were her, I would stay as far away from the “i know what I would do with you” guy as possible. He looks like his plan would to serve her for Sunday dinner.
I shouldnt make light of creeps, but I suspect the “wild thoughts” guy is actually thinking about the young woman wearing his avant- grade clothing line made of indoor/outdoor carpeting and tastefully repurposed lawn furniture.

    • Canis Greyhame

Pretty sure at least one of those guys is a serial killer.

  • Thiazin Red

Since its open thread, what have people watched recently?

I saw Alien Covenant last night and the only way it makes sense to me is if the world government identified the 2000 worst dipshits whose continued existence would endanger the entire human species and tricked them into getting on a colony ship. The sheer infuriating moronicy of every non robot character is astounding.

The characters in the first two movies were garbage haulers and low level grunts and they all acted more like competent professionals than the supposed scientists and trained explorers in Prometheus and Covenant.

Okay, it really sucks that the captain died, but prioritizing fixing the ship over a wake shouldn’t cause professionals to pout like children. Sure lets send pretty much the entire crew to investigate the deeply suspicious signal. No, no one needs to wear a single piece of protective equipment on the alien planet. Just poke at the plants, nothing could go wrong there. Ignore the MASSIVE FUCKING PILE OF CORPSES that the clearly evil robot is leading you past. (Seriously not one character every asks a single question about the massive corpse pile, the massive corpse pile should be pretty concerning.) Go right ahead and announce your intention to wander off alone, I mean every single other person who wandered off is dead now, but go for it. Once you learn there is a pathogen, continue to not take even the tiniest safety precaution.

Finally, the robot is acting completely differently his accent, cadence, stance, affect and just everything look like his evil twin, but don’t get suspicious or anything. Dragging out the reveal was pointless since it was so obvious that David had taken Walter’s place.

Did David feel disappointed that it was so easy? Like when he got the captain to literally stick his face in a pod seconds after David finished his villain monologue and showing him his collection of aliens, was David sad that he didn’t even have to trick the captain? He could just say hey follow me and stick your face in this thing and the guy would do it despite it clearly being an alien pod created by a clearly evil robot.

And why the fuck did Shaw fix him? She knew he was evil, why did she give him a body? I was kind of hoping he pulled off some kind of crazy Pickle Rick type thing, but no she is just that much of a moron.

    • Anna Elizabeth

Fail-Safe. TNG The Neutral Zone. What a train-wreck that episode is, and it’s still above-average for Season One.

    • Joe Beese

At least Prometheus was memorably bad. One forgot seeing Covenant by the time you got home from the theater.

      • bupkus231

At least Prometheus was memorably bad. One forgot seeing Covenant by the time you got home from the theater finished watching the trailer.

[ I don’t usually condemn a movie I haven’t yet watched – but the confused and confusing trailer for “Alien: Covenant” I saw last year made me wonder whether or not watching any of the “Alien” series was something I wanted to admit to. ]

    • HazooToo

I haven’t been watching anything, but I HAVE been playing Rimworld and Judgement: Apocalypse Survival. Some of the pawns in Rimworld will do blatantly stupid shit, if you don’t keep an eye on them, but even THEY will send you a little frowny face icon if you walk them past a pile of human corpses…. which happens pretty often in my games…

      • Thiazin Red

Me playing rimworld, “Why did you eat that? WTF is wrong with you? If your current shirt is making you so angry that you start fires, just take a different shirt from the shirt pile!”

        • HazooToo

WHY WOULD YOU EAT RAW MEAT JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE ELSE WAS USING THE PILE OF SIMPLE MEALS AT THE EXACT SECOND YOU GOT HUNGRY?! Oh god, no don’t-

Well, that’s two more dead for walking between the turrets and the manhunting boomalopes.

          • Thiazin Red

I did not trust them enough to make turrets, they can barely handle farming and not setting themselves on fire. I did build them a nice rec room.

          • HazooToo

It helps if you forbid them from using the only door leading out of their base when something is attacking. I also have a mod that allows them to dig a moat of deep water, which surrounds the outer wall and forces the enemy to come to the damn front door, instead of burning down the walls.

        • Courser_Resistance

This is a game? Seriously? Where you have to manage dumb-as-shit underlings?

      Racist gloating at that.

  • Bub, the cynical zombie

As some of you know, I am a corrections officer. There is a practice that some of our inmates engage in known as “shitblasting.” Shitblasting is usually practiced in segregation units, and involves scooping some urine and feces up in a container and throwing it at someone they don’t like through the food slot or the gaps around the door – usually other inmates, sometimes staff.

Chris Cillizza is being shitblasted on Twitter right now — and it is glorious.

“Excitement about Naomi Alderman’s dystopian novel “The Power” has been arcing across the Atlantic since it won the Baileys Prize for Women’s Fiction earlier this year in England. Now, finally, Americans can feel the jolt of this extraordinary book for themselves. Alderman has written our era’s “Handmaid’s Tale,” and, like Margaret Atwood’s classic, “The Power” is one of those essential feminist works that terrifies and illuminates, enrages and encourages.”

now that it is the OT. this thing happened last night.

I was going to pick up a pack of smokes and this lady is talking to the clerk about how a bunch of people have offered to buy the Bud Lite/Dallas Cowboys poster with all the game days on it. she then starts going off about the kneeling and how it disrespects the flag. so I calmly explain to her that is not the case. then she’s upset about the statues. I explain to her that Lee thought the statues were a bad idea and that it had nothing to do with her family what fought in the Civil War–that most of the statues went up during the Jim Crow era.

then we’ve taken our conversation outside and I’m explaining a lege thing to her and out of the blue she’s all, “were you born in Mexico?”

I just…I’m a quarter black Irish and that’s most of my features. (no, pale people with blue eyes and black hair, you’re Celtic Irish. black Irish have a bit of Spanish Moor blood…which is Spanish with a trace of Moroccan.) but not all people who can tan are Hispanic.

AND WE’RE IN FUCKING TEXAS! the first VP of the Republic of Texas was a Tejano. you’d think people would have figured this out. but I guess tan + in TX + smart = Mexican immigrant?

Amusingly, Yglesias is a big fan of Matt Taibbi, who he’s ironically failed to condemn (or maybe failed to condemn ironically, hard to tell)

“You’re always trying to force Masha and Sveta under the table to give
you blow jobs. It’s not funny. They don’t think it’s funny,” Kara complained. “But… it is funny,” Matt said. We have been pretty rough on our girls. We’d ask our Russian staff to flash their asses or breasts for us. We’d tell them that if they wanted to keep their jobs, they’d have to perform unprotected anal sex with us. Nearly every day, we askedour female staff if they approved of anal sex. That was a fixation of ours. “Can I fuck you in the ass? Huh? I mean, without a rubber? Is that okay?” It was all part of the fun.”

      • Carpe Vagenda

        Uh.

So, the best-case scenario is that Taibbi was just turning his partner’s third world rape into ironic humor in support of the candidate who wants ladies to go back to the 1900s in cargo cult hopes that some internet douche will convince his mommy to support our children?

A douche bag is bad? I never heard this, it’s like tampons with toxic shock syndrome or something?

          • mancityRed6

it upsets the natural flora(?) and kills helpful things that should not be killed. and I don’t even have a vagina

        • House0fTheBlueLights

Unless you are actively calling it out, educating your cohort, and believing it when a woman tells you what’s going on, no, you don’t get a pass.

        • House0fTheBlueLights

And see, here’s the thing. We don’t know that about you. All we know is that not a single day goes by when some man doesn’t pull his privilege, or his hands, or his dick on us. So we have to treat you *as though* you are one of them. This means- deciding whether crossing the street when you see a man approaching you on an empty street will piss him off and risk a “fuck you bitch” or whether it’s the best thing to keep you safe from a possible predator. It means awkwardly laughing at the boss’s idiot jokes. It means tolerating your peer coworkers impatience when you ask him for a perfectly reasonable item that he controls, in a perfectly reasonable tone of voice at a perfectly reasonable moment. It means thinking about whether your neckline is high enough or your jeans are too tight, even though low necklines and tight jeans are pretty much the only things they sell. It means uncomfortable bras because bras are designed for the male gaze. It means wearing the fucking bra, that you don’t need, because you don’t know which of the men you encounter are going to stare at your boobs, or worse, make a remark. Whether you know them or not is entirely beside the point.

Is this for real? I never saw a reptile play before, or even thought that they could!

      • Courser_Resistance

To say that they ‘play’ isn’t really accurate, but they do respond to familiar people and will do stuff like that when young. They have excellent eyesight so the youngster was trying to catch the bubbles in those weird little feet.

The wee ‘mittens’ actually feel pretty cool when they hang onto you.

        • marxalot

They’re super cool and make excellent sense given the critters’ habitat, they’re just freaky.

          • Courser_Resistance

Ours’ ‘living space was a floor to ceiling made of those really big fake planter things, one upside down on top and one right side up on the bottom. Then you hang some potted plants in there. We bought the thing but the idea was that there was no ‘cage’. Since Chameleons don’t ‘jump’ they can’t really leave the habitat. And we had dogs and while they’d sometimes eat the leftover crickets in the bottom, they didn’t bother it other wise.

Darryl would actually reach out with his front feet for me to lift him up closer to the water dripper, so he definitely knew me. I fed them baby insects from chopsticks when they were very wee so they were pretty affectionate for reptiles.

    • marxalot

      Chameleon feet are freaky.

  • Anna Elizabeth

Oh, @Shanzgood – I got my new Pepper Spray from Amazon today. The expiration is 6 of 2022.

    • Three Finger Salute

Is illegal in Massachusetts, I believe. If I did ever feel the need to “pack” something similar, I guess I’d put in my purse a portable Lysol-to-Go.

      • TundraGrifter

I mentioned this before. A small plastic container of cayenne pepper. Just shake it every so often to keep it loose. If you are ever questioned, tell ’em you like your food spicy. If you have to use it, a face full of cayenne will stop a raging bull.

        • h4rr4r

I would suggest something hotter. If you are going powdered anyway, might as well be ghost pepper.

          • Biel_ze_Bubba

Ghost peppers (and reapers, and other nuclear options) are not something you want to be flinging arount in a high-stress situation. Your aim had better be damned good, or you’ll both be carted off by EMS.

          • h4rr4r

I think any powder option has that risk, any strong enough to work.

        • Sophie McMillan

So, my baby girl is headed off to Oz for university . According to my step daughter who lives there also too, pepper spray etc are illegal. Infact, if attacked and the woman uses any kind of weapon she may have on her person ( ie keyes thru the fingers) the woman will be prosecuted for carrying a dangerous weapon. I was thinking of buying a tiger lady and coaching her to say that it is a squeezy hand thingy but have been told nope. Any suggestions from wonkettes as to how to protect herself without using anything that could be deemed a weapon are gratefully received.
The cayenne pepper will be added to her packing list.

          • TundraGrifter

Back in the day I carried a plastic film canister of cayenne. Lid popped right off when you needed it to. That’s an essential element.

    • h4rr4r

      Pepper spray expires?

      • Anna Elizabeth

Yes, 2-4 years and it loses it’s potency. I bought SABRE Red this tome, our TheWanderer said it’s LEO-grade.

Things for me are better than they used to be, but Shan reminded me last Saturday to check dates.

  • The symptoms of neurosyphilis are protean, varying widely from one individual to another. Commonly recognized symptoms include irritability, loss of ability to concentrate, delusional thinking, and grandiosity. Memory, insight, and judgment can become impaired. Insomnia may occur. Visual problems may develop, including the inability of pupils to react to the light. This, along other ocular pathology, can result in photophobia, dimming of vision, and squinting. All of these things have been observed in Trump. Dementia, headaches, gait disturbances. and patchy hair loss can also be seen in later stages of syphilis

The late Grace Lee Whitney is perhaps best known for portraying Yeoman Janice Rand on Star Trek TOS.

She survived childhood sexual abuse, and was sexually assaulted on the set of TOS by an unnamed Studio executive. She was let go, ostensibly for “weight issues” and to “free up Captain Kirk” for romance with guest characters. Grace Lee had some substance abuse issues too, and eventually was a streetwalker for a time.

Grace Lee turned her life around, and appeared as Janice Rand in 4 of the Star Trek movies, ending as Commander Janice Rand on USS Excelsior.

This has been a big story here for the past few days. Prepare to lose all faith in humanity.

A 3-year-old girl from Texas has been missing for three days since her
father sent her out alone to an alley at 3 a.m. — her punishment, police
say he told officers, for not drinking her milk.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2017/10/10/a-special-needs-toddler-was-sent-outside-at-3-a-m-as-punishment-then-she-disappeared/?utm_term=.86bcf88169dc

    • HazooToo

His story… is that coyotes… were seen in the alley… where he sent his child… I have to walk away for a minute.

      • Coyotes did not drag the girl away. If this “father” didn’t actually kill her I’ll be surprised.

        • HazooToo

If he didn’t do it with his own hands, he did it by sending her outside at 3am to stand by a tree with no one watching her. How is it that adoption can be so fucking hard and nailbiting and expensive for a normal fucking family, but so easy for people who give no goddamn what happens to their adopted child?

          • If you attend Church, you’re put at the top of the list apparently.

          • HazooToo

You know what else I noticed? In the cases where a foster parent is caught abusing the child, “I WAS SO FRUSTRATED WITH THE CHILD’S IMPOSSIBLE PROBLEMS! PITY ME!” is always the refrain. But while “You knew about them beforehand, and you could have given the child back” is an appropriate response, it’s not the same as “Get some fucking counseling for yourself then, because normal people don’t respond to stress by abusing their fucking child!” which is not said as much.

          • Beyond heartbreaking, it makes me fucking crazy.

        • Meccalopolis

Fucked up but I was thinking the same

    • Sophia

I read that earlier. What a sick fuck. 3 a.m. in the morning FFS. How do you even try to justify that

    • “Members of Emmanuel Bible Chapel, the church Mathews and his family attend, have helped search several areas near the family’s home since Saturday. One member, Jose Cherian, told NBC 5 in Dallas-Fort Worth that Mathews and his wife are good parents.
“The parents are also loving. They loved Sherin very much,” he said. “They take care of her very much.”

Ah…there’s the Jesus credentials. Whatever torture was jnflucted upon this little girl was done in good faith. Amen.

“One Of The Last Remaining American Hero Navajo Code Talkers From WWII, Passed Away…”
“A skeptical lieutenant decided to test their skills and the code before trusting them to deliver actual combat messages.

The Code Talkers successfully translated, transmitted and re-translated a test message in two and a half minutes. Without using the Navajo code, it could take hours for a soldier to complete the same task.

Rick Wiles: ‘You Don’t Have The Right To Worship Lucifer In This Country’

“What is happening to this country?” Wiles asked. “We’ve lost our mind. And the city council and the mayor say, ‘Well, these satanists have their rights too.’ No, they don’t. They don’t have any rights. You don’t have the right to worship Lucifer. I’m sorry, but this country was founded by Christians, you don’t have the right to worship Lucifer in this country. Any Aussies here? Tony Abbott is a moran, and a callous one at that. But I’m sure you knew that already.

“Is he making light of this serious issue?” Actor and advocate for abused children Chris Hemsworth slams former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott for shocking gaffe where Abbott described himself as being “not good-looking enough” to be a victim of child abuse

    A few takeaways here:

    1) ANYONE can be a victim of child abuse, it takes all forms and child sexual abuse in particular is NOT in any way about “aesthetic appeal” or “attraction” whatsoever

    2) Tony Abbott needs to go meet a boxing kangaroo in a dark alley and get voted against by said pugilistic marsupial.

    3) Tony Abbott is an asshole. I don’t know what the Australia-specific colloquialism for asshole is, but it applies perfectly to Tony Abbott.

    4) All of the above, Katie, plus more kangaroo votes.

    • Unmutual Tetsu Kaba

I’m not. Only have visited but Abbot needs a runin with some Tasmanian devils. (They were impressively snarly when we visited Featherdale Wildlife Park.)

  • Meanwhile, in the world of feetballz, the owners have decided who is to blame for all this divisiveness, and it isn’t the lily-orange howler monkey tweeting from the White House toilet.

The controversy over the Anthem is a barrier to having honest conversations and making real progress on the underlying issues.

You know something? THAT IS A VERY GOOD POINT! To that end, I suggest that the owners of the NFL tell Donald Trump to eat a dick and stop fanning this controversy. But, nah. So much easier to fuss at black people and silence them, instead.

One or two inadvisable Twitter outbursts, but let’s face it, you get smacked in the head enough, you’ll have your moments… And with the new standards established, it’s looks like the second fucking coming of Ghandi*.

… bearing in mind he’s got a lot to live up to after the _last_ black president.

you know, I think an under-examined aspect of social media is that it makes everyone feel like they have to declare opinions on everything.

I’ve seen so many people talk about Catalan independence on Facebook who had literally never heard of Catalonia before this week. Like…it’s ok not to know about something and thus, not have an opinion on it. and if you are uninformed on a topic, it is actually good if you haven’t formed an opinion on it.

it’s part of why false information is so easy to spread, because we assume every random person expressing their opinions on the issues of the day actually know what the fuck they are talking about.

    • I never assume that random people expressing their opinions know what they are talking about.
I however always know what I am talking about and I think those Catalan’s should join the European Union as a Free State and fight the patriarchy. And what not.

      • AJ Milne

      Yeah, I agree.

    • Three Finger Salute

Also too, if you say that there are people who might be better informed on an issue than Average Joe Twitface, you’re an “elitist” who hates democracy and wants to “silence the voice of the people.” Really the worst thing the Internet could have done was lateralize access to information and “public access” commentary to such an extent that truth is dead and the already-existing distrust of “eggheads” and “intellectuals” got amplified to the level of mob rule. Trump is in office because experts are no longer trusted (in part, by their own doing — i.e., shady dealings between doctors and pharmaceutical companies, and “military analysts” intentionally feeding disinfo so as to justify war in Iraq) and “folk wisdom” is considered gospel now. No one’s feelings can ever be wrong.

    • Courser_Resistance

I mentioned earlier that I have no opinion on Catalan independence. My Spanish professor a few years back was Catalan so I learned a lot about it. It’s a really interesting region. But all I know is that the issue is complicated.

An important lesson I learned during my training is to be aware of, and acknowledge, what you don’t know. Over time I have become what I honestly can say is an “expert” in a few esoteric areas of study. I all too frequently come across postings on the internet that, because of my experience and background, I know to be factually untrue. An upside to this. however, is that it constantly reminds me never to take pronouncements about things I am not well versed in uncritically.

Brilliant bit! I miss Jon, though I understand why he’s staying away (most of the time).

    • So. Fucking much. This.

Yesterday someone posted a quick blurb where some ass goes “Why don’t women come foreward so they are believed hnnnngggg?”
And a woman goes “Because no one believes us”
And this third dude NOT EVEN JOKING goes “I find that hard to believe”

I wanted to vote rage him through the monitor.

      • persistently_resistant_gayby

        Yep – no shit.

I would’ve pummeled the dolt to the ground before he completed his sentence.

      • SDGeoff3

Put your thumb and forefinger close together, just in front of your eye and look at his avatar and say, as you block him, “I squeesh you. I squeesh you like deerty leetle bogg.” And freshen the cocktail.

        • Can I go with the original crush instead? I liked Kevin best. Next to Scott. XD

          • SDGeoff3

Any way that meets the need. It’s your rage!

Hey, seriouspants totebagger Dems who “support mainstream journalism so we can hold them accountable!”, how’s that working out lately?

    • Very well excepting of course for the obvious ass monkies who so wanna lick GOP taint they can’t help themselves.

    • Paperless Tiger

Goddam awful, now that you mention it.

  • Angela Ruzzo

I don’t understand why anyone expected Hillary to issue a public statement on this subject. She’s a private citizen now, and she doesn’t have to make a statement unless and until she damn well feels like it. Trump waited 5 days before issuing a single Tweet about Puerto Rico. What did Cillizza have to say about that? Mr. Trump says he wants equal time in the media, well equal time means if you don’t criticize Trump for not Tweeting about Puerto Rico for 5 days, then you don’t criticize Hillary for not making a statement about Weinstein for 5 days. This is blatant hypocrisy, but what else can you expect from a weasel like Cillizza?

    • We should start asking Chris how long it is taking the president to put out a statement on the dead service members in Niger.
And why he hates the troops for not making this an issue.

      • Angela Ruzzo

        Very good point.

      • jesterpunk
      • SDGeoff3

He’s waiting until they figure a way to blame it on Obama.

        • persistently_resistant_gayby

          Hillary – its always, Hillary.

        • He probably doesn’t know Niger is a country, and just thinks it’s the word he uses in private to describe Obama.

          • Angela Ruzzo

I’ll bet you my PowerBall winning ticket (which I haven’t won yet) that he couldn’t pronounce Niger correctly if his life depended on it. But I would love to see him screw this up on live TV.

          • Maggielle

I’ve just been googling “how to pronounce Niger” and I’m getting nee-ZHAIR, nye-ZHAIR, NEH-zhair, and on one site, Cambridge
http://dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/niger they have the UK and US pronunciations listed, and UK is nee-ZHAIR and US is NYE-ger. How does the average Nigerien say it? (And Nigerien is the demonym Wiki uses.)

            Help?

          • Maggielle

Yep, you’re right. With French the official language, it has to be neeZHAIR.

          • Angela Ruzzo

Most Americans I know pronounce it NYE-jer or like that other word we don’t use, but the correct French pronunciation is, as you noted, nee-ZHAIR.

          • This is precisely why I think the aides are purposefully keeping this story from Trump.

          • Angela Ruzzo

That thought did cross my mind. Imagine if he made a typo in a Tweet!

    • David Hollenshead

But Secretary Clinton is a Woman, making her subject to a double standard, and as a Woman, Angela you should know that by now……..

    • Shanzgood

Hillary is the go-to for rape apology because of Bill. And not just for Republicans.

      • David Hollenshead

Assuming that Bill actually committed sexual assault….

        • No, he totally did.
And because she acted like most women and went no he fucking didn’t! Those chicks be liar pants I am sure! She was attacking victims you see, no matter how many times she apologized for that, and has to be held accountable every time a man does a bad thing. Forever.

          • Shanzgood

She’s also held accountable for all the bad “fake feminist” things forever.

        • Angela Ruzzo

A significant percentage of men have no idea what constitutes sexual assault. This is not an excuse for Bill by any means, I’m just saying.

          • I am pretty sure men say they do not know what constitutes assault. They have got to know “keep your hands to yourself” however since every kindergartener is taught such. I just do not buy the “I didn’t realize!” excuse anymore.

          • Angela Ruzzo

You would be surprised how many men have believed all of their lives that when a woman says “no” she really means “yes” unless she actually pulls out a gun or a knife and threatens to remove their balls. I heard this from so many men I dated 40, 30 and 20 years ago that I was thinking of printing up flash cards that said “When I Say No I Mean Hell No So Get Your Fucking Hands Off Me!”

I went to an on-the-job sexual harassment training class once, and every single man in the class was clueless about what constitutes sexual harassment. They asked the most stupid questions imaginable. This was only 15 years ago.

          • h4rr4r

            Huh?
I am a Man and I think I know what that means. Assault means unwanted touching, sexual describes the nature of this unwanted touching.

          • Shanzgood

Then you are not in that “significant number” she referenced so there’s no need for you to #notallmen this.

          • h4rr4r

No, I am saying they are liars.

I am not all manning this, I am calling them shitheal liars.

          • Shanzgood

            They who?

          • h4rr4r

The men who claim not to know what sexual assault is.

          • Shanzgood

            Studies have proven otherwise.

          • h4rr4r

How do they account for liars?

            Not doubting it, just wondering.

          • Shanzgood

Why does it matter? Lying and being willfully ignorant have the same result.

          • Because the statement was some men do not “know” what is or is not sexual harassment.
If they are lying or being willfully ignorant, which is a form of lying, then they do know, they are simply pretending that they do not in order to get away with it.
Like when my son goes “You said not to slam the controler, you did not say not to kick it!” It’s an excuse, and one we should not let someone get away with.
Unless they were raised by wolves, of course. That one might get an actually did not actually know pass.

          • Shanzgood

That’s the thing. They get away with both lying and claiming ignorance under the same umbrella: rape culture.

          • h4rr4r

Do you think doing something out of malice versus ignorance is morally equivalent?

“I didn’t know any better” is a bullshit excuse.

          • Shanzgood

The OP’s point was how fucked up it is that so many men don’t know what sexual assault is. Nobody here is trying to make excuses.

          • h4rr4r

I think the idea that they don’t know is some weird cultural blindspot we have.

          • Shanzgood

Which is why I’m asking…how come you are so focused on the supposed lying?!

          • h4rr4r

Because I think they are. They have learned that this lie gets them out of trouble.

          • Angela Ruzzo

No, they are not liars, they are selfish and lazy and have been brought up to believe that women never say what they mean.

          • They are willfully ignorant, then, and therefore, liars.

          • h4rr4r

This is an excuse our culture makes only for white males. Odd that.

          • Angela Ruzzo

I am glad you are not one of the men I was talking about. But there are a lot of those other men out there.

          • h4rr4r

You misunderstood, I am calling them liars. I don’t believe there are any such men.

          • Angela Ruzzo

I’m sorry, but you are wrong. I have met hundreds of them, both on a personal level and at work. My women friends have met hundreds more of them.

          • h4rr4r

You really think these men don’t know not to touch people who don’t want to be touched?

You think it is more likely they missed kindergarten than that they are lying?

          • Shanzgood

We who have experienced it are telling you YES THIS HAPPENS.

            Pay attention.

          • h4rr4r

I am confused. I am not doubting anyone has been assaulted. I am confused as to why the belief that these men don’t know better.

How do you know they weren’t lying?

          • I am confused myself. Studies that prove men just do not understand what sexual harassment is?

idk. Seems like an excuse to me.

          • h4rr4r

I am frankly shocked that what I said was contentious.

All my life I have heard”no means yes” out of the mouths of certian kinds of men. Always said with a knowing smile, or wink, or more likely a laugh and some other nasty claims. They knew that meant assaulting a woman. These are the same men who will use the nword in front of me, since a middle class white man can’t possibly object to that. In both cases they have the same reaction when I say something.

As a young man I was not good about saying something. I was good about taking action, getting female friends home for the night, but I badly failed at pointing out this kind of bullshit. I have no tolerance for it anymore.

          • Shanzgood

            Do some homework.

Have you ever heard the phrase “no means yes”?

          • h4rr4r

Have you heard the phrase “it’s easier to ask forgiveness than permission”?

I have heard “no means yes” and in every case it was used to mean the man knew they should not be doing that and did it anyway. Every single time.

          • wavicles

Have you NEVER met anyone in a Frat?

          • h4rr4r

Many, and all of them knew that “no means yes” meant she said no and he did it anyway.

They weren’t innocent babes or confused young men, they knew what was going on.

          • Ninja0980

I think Bill Clinton was a sleazeball and a crappy husband but I also think the women chose to sleep with.

  • Serai 1

It occurs to me that a lot of the reason people get upset when they don’t get instant opinion quotes on any issue of the day is that we’ve all become so accustomed to brainless ninnies and wingnut assholes spouting off whatever’s banging around in their heads at the moment that we’ve lost the patience to wait for an actual, reasoned response. Twitter has conditioned people to expect answers RIGHT NOW DAMMIT or at least within the next ten minutes, and when someone decides to wait until they calm down (or get all the info or whatever) before letting the world know what they think, they get tarred as somehow being in collusion with something. This strikes me as an increasingly childish way of viewing other people, and increasingly harmful. We’re going to end up unable to accept any result that takes longer than ten seconds, for anything, anytime.

    • shivaskeeper

I said something similar on the Vegas update thread. It’s the digital age. It’s the age of instant everything now. We all want the answers right now because the technology exists to get the answers right now. The Media as whole will demand and update to something seconds after it’s happened so they can get the scoop. They need to fill the news cycle and we want the info now as well. It doesn’t matter that time and time and time again the first assessment of almost anything is going to be wrong and them have to be changed. Not updated, outright changed because it was so wrong.

It’s not just Twitter, although that probably helps reduce everything to being short enough to be on a bumper sticker with no insights, no nuances, nothing past a surface assessment. It’s having the internet at our fingertips, having all the news feeds all the time, having access to everyone’s commentary instantly, whether we are at home with a computer, or just out and about with a smart phone. It’s information access overload.

We are a society that wants it all and wants it all now. I personally think we will not go back to paper ballots to vote with because they take fractionally longer to count, and we won’t get real time state by state and county by county updates. Near real time isn’t fast enough anymore.

My good deed of the day, I changed a flat tire for two old ladies stranded on the side of the road. I’m glad that I paid attention, when my husband taught me how to do it:-)

Glad to hear that some cars still have a spare and a jack…..

      • Bad Scooter

i fell over and almost died laughing when the Toyota salesman popped the hatchback of my new Prius and lifted the mat to reveal a can of fix-a-flat where a spare tire should be. I seriously thought he was punking me.

        • David Hollenshead

Just keep in mind that your Prius was not made to last, so maybe it doesn’t need a spare.
The people who buy them here in Portland, keep junking them and buying another, as if a car who’ll only last 6 years…

          • sarafina

A tire is not a car. I have friends who have Priuses, which they love, but nails will puncture any tire.

          • Bad Scooter

my first Prius had over 200,000 miles on it when i traded it in, and all it ever needed was oil changes and one set of rear brake pads in 6+ years. same with my second Prius, which I totaled by driving like an idiot (may it rest in peace). so far my third Prius is just as reliable as the first two, and my only complaint is the can of fix-a-flat ILO a spare tire. wish i had known about that so I could have kept the spare from the one i totaled (may it rest in peace).

          • David Hollenshead

And I am still driving a 1984 Audi with unknown milage, since the odometer stuck at 230k years ago. The Prius are disposable, since they require too much labor to repair…

          • Bad Scooter

kudos on keeping your Audi going for 33 years, David! impressive. What makes you say the Prius requires too much labor to repair? From what I’ve seen, the battery never dies or needs maintenance; the rest is comparable to other cars with gasoline engines (except my friends’ cars always seem to be in the shop and mine never is, knock wood).

        • CB

You have to keep digging. There should be a spare underneath that compartment, but you have to pull out the whole styrofoam assembly to get to it.

The Prius was made to last forever!

The only thing more durable is a full electric vehicle…

          • Bad Scooter

haha believe me, i dug down to metal while Toyota salesman kept insisting he wasn’t kidding … i asked if they would sell me a spare, but their parts departments don’t offer them, and i’ll be damned if i’m gonna decrease my MPG lugging around a full-sized wheel/tire ! it’s a 2016 Prius Four, btw.

    • DrBigHead

In California, a lodestar for the left in the era of President Donald Trump, the Democratic establishment is besieged and fighting to hang on.

The state Democratic Party, until recently, has been caught in the throes of a bitter dispute over the chairmanship, pitting party veterans against the activist “Berniecrat” wing. There are calls for Nancy Pelosi to step down as House Democratic leader. And Dianne Feinstein is now the target of progressives determined to prevent her from winning a fifth Senate term.

The simmering conflict has implications that reach far beyond the state’s borders. The outcome stands to shape the national party’s leadership, its ideological bent and even its finances, given California’s status as the party’s essential fundraising hub.

Just because we liked some of Sanders’ ideas doesn’t mean that we support everything he has done.
The same can be said about Clinton, as most of us voted for her in the general election, while having some moral problems with her conduct.
Seriously, “It’s her time” sounds like something our Führer Trump would say……

          • my feet are normal

          • David Hollenshead

that’s because…wait for it…you weren’t a Clinton primary voter. it’s amazing that they didn’t treat you the way they did the Clinton primary voters, isn’t it? since you were only doing EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANTED.

          • David Hollenshead

          • David Hollenshead

            Nor do I,
I haven’t witnessed the hard core “authoritarian bullies” who supported Sanders, but I have from the ones who supported Führer Trump.
Therefore I question the threat of these so called “Bernie Bros”…

          • my feet are normal

It’s real simple: it is not more progressive to listen only to white people. The Democrats will continue to represent their base, which is largely middle-class minorities. There’s no reason to give angry conspiracy theorists any power at all, ESPECIALLY NOT SINCE THEY SPENT THE WHOLE OF 2016* AS WILLING DUPES OF THE VERY BILLIONAIRES THEY CLAIM TO OPPOSE.

          • Panika MCD

no it doesn’t. you haven’t met most people who supported him in the primary–and since you haven’t, your anecdotal data doesn’t hold up. you have met some people who did. they were nice to you. you don’t know how they would treat a Clinton voter. so you can’t really say that. that’s not how it works.

I only stated that my experience suggests that the California Democratic Party has little to worry about, from a handful of weird & aggressive Sanders supporters.
But don’t let that stop you from being a

And no I am not a fan of most gun makers…

          • Panika MCD

we have a whole slew of laws regarding cars including holding their manufacturers responsible when they fuck up. gun manufacturers are the only ones in the country that aren’t. NEXT!

          • David Hollenshead

Okay, please tell me how gun “manufacturers responsible when they fuck up”, as are you posting about a Saturday night special that can spay the shooter with gun parts, when it fails, or are you posting about producing guns & accessories that have no real use, like 40 cartridge magazines and bump fire kits ???

          • Panika MCD

oh. you are just too stupid to live, aren’t you?

they have been freed of the responsibility of following their product down the line. they no longer are responsible for going, “maybe this town doesn’t need 10 guns for every man, woman and child. maybe someone is trafficking guns and that’s why we get such big orders.” and then calling ATF.

but you don’t have a problem with that. they’re only tools made for the express purpose of killing things. I’m sure you ride a rifle to work everyday!

If you were able to see past the bullshit and vote for Clinton in the general, then you are not a Brenibro. None of this is directed at you. It’s really that simple.

There are plenty of people here who campaigned for Sanders in the primary, including about half of the writers. The difference in all of them and the Bros, is they were able switch in the general and not try to be Tea Party 2.0 and have no compromise with anyone. FFS, some of the Bros turned on Bernie himself when he finally got around to endorsing Clinton.

          • Panika MCD

this is not one of those. he’s claiming to have met most of the American voters and that no Bernie person was ever mean to a Clinton person. he is beyond saving.

          • David Hollenshead

Nope, you are just twisting everything I posted for your own reasons….

          • David Hollenshead

The figure of people who supported Sanders in the primary, who then voted for Führer Trump in the general was 12%, if the article I read was correct. Many of them had never voted, like Führer Trump’s “low information voters”.
And yes, I have heard about the so called “Bernie Bros” but never actually met one.

          • my feet are normal

Oh I see now that the REAL victims of Trump’s presidency were Bernie Bros, not the powerless people they (let’s be honest: you) threw under the bus.

          • shivaskeeper

The low information voters tend to be the GOPers single issue voters. They vote every single time. Usually they vote around abortion, or no gun control, or anti-LGBT, or religion. Its their angry base. That is one of the reasons we fail at midterms and state level. Our base seems to sit out every other year or fall to infighting.

That 12% who went for Two Scoops are the left’s single issue voters. Whether it was $15 minimum or single payer or whatever else they could not see past the single low information vote they had, refused to compromise, and fucked everyone else along the way.

That is the primary reason they are not respected. Secondary to that is fact that they keep on keeping in being single issue low information voters while proclaiming their progressive bonafideds and continuing to throw tantrums and bash the only Party they have.

You say you have never seen them. Wait for an article in this site that is nice to Clinton or even slightly critical of Sanders. They will be out shitposting within 30 minutes of it being up rehashing how we forced them to vote for Trump or how we forced them to not compromise or how they are so much more pure or Bernie didn’t vote to go into Iraq 15 years ago or whatever the talking point is that day.

        • Panika MCD
