The Sheriff’s office in Chelan County, Washington, is doing an apology tour following someone from their office “accidentally” posting a meme to the official Chelan County Emergency Management page, depicting protesters being run over by a car along with the slogan “All Lives Splatter.” The meme, shared from the page “Libtards: ya gotta love ’em,” was accompanied by a status reading, “I don’t wish harm on anyone … but protesters don’t belong in the road!” With the insinuation being that if protesters are in the road, it is perfectly acceptable to run them over with your car. Because what else are you going to do? Not run over a human being with your car?

This comes on the heels not only of the Charlottesville rally, at which James Alex Fields Jr. ran over and killed 32 year-old Heather Heyer with his car, but another recent incident in Vancouver, Washington. The very same state that Chelan County is in!

This weekend, police in Vancouver arrested a man attending a far-right “Patriot Prayer” rally for attempting to drive his truck into a crowd of protesters. Luckily, no one was hurt, but not for lack of his trying.

At that same protest, a group of “Proud Boys” drove down the street pepper-spraying protesters, and subsequently crashed into a police vehicle. Very “Blue Lives Matter” of them!

It’s beginning to become pretty clear that this is not simply a crude meme or a joke to these people, and that they truly do not understand that it is wrong to try and run people over with your car. The comments on the meme itself make this clear:

This is not a “joke,” it’s a call to violence, and the people sharing this meme clearly seem to believe that not only is it “justifiable” to run over protesters in the street, it is completely legal. Posting something like this on the page of a sheriff’s office is going to solidify that belief.

The Sheriff’s Office of Chelan County is saying that this was done by accident, and that the staffer meant to share the meme to his own page.

“Staff at Chelan County Emergency Management feel terrible that this inappropriate and hurtful post made it onto the Facebook page,” Burnett wrote in the news release. “Changes have already been made in procedure to assure nothing like this will ever occur in the future.”

The thing is, this is not actually something one can easily do by “mistake.” For those of you who have never done the social media management thing, allow me to explain. In order to share something to the Facebook page of a page you manage, you have to go through SEVERAL steps. It’s not like you click share and whoopsie daisy it posts to a page you manage instead of your own account.

First, after you click share, you literally have to scroll down to the thing that says “Share to a page.”

Then, you have to select which page you want to share it to.

There’s a little more to it than just clicking share, and it’s pretty much impossible to do all that by accident. I’ve done social media management for years, and I’ve never posted something to a page I manage by accident. Also, for the record, I have never accidentally liked a porn video on Twitter.

Even if it was a mistake, the fact that someone who believes it is whimsical or cute to run over protesters with cars was working, in any capacity, for the police, is beyond disturbing. Someone at the office should probably inform him that murdering people with your car is illegal, and then fire him.

Make no mistake, these fuckers would start a junta if they thought they could get away with it…

Led by Ann Coulter would be a “cunta junta”?

  • toughsister

So that piece of crud didn’t get fired on the spot?

    • Rebel Scum with permit

“Make sure it never happens again” could include a lot of possibilities. By law, union contract, etc. depending on the state, disciplinary actions may not be public. Also, at least in California, public employees, especially safety employees, have rights others can only dream of. Not sure about Washington.

Wait until a Black or Muslim person makes a controversial comment in the same position and let’s see if they get off the hook so easily.

Some lawyer would take that up, but that could take years, and try getting another job, any job, in the meantime.

That only happens to the little people. Police officers aren’t little people.

That’s what I find the most disturbing.

He will be suspended with pay pending an investigation. When the dust settles, he’ll be promoted.

      • Old town Urbandale

And, if he is fired, he’ll just get hired by a community an hour down the road.

        • puredog

Which will add two hours to his daily commute. What could possibly go wrong?

  • Lance Thrustwell

This is going to sound incredibly naive – and I don’t necessarily believe this for one minute – but is it possible that someone didn’t look at the violent comments, and just posted it as a crude and tasteless, but essentially benevolent, warning to protesters to stay alert and avoid dangers?

Again, I know how dewy-eyed that sounds. But I think it is possible to be an insensitive asshole without being downright murderous. In fact, I think a lot of cops fit that description.

    • Bobathonic

Why were they even prowling the source page?

      • Lance Thrustwell

The ‘libtards ya gotta love ’em’ page? All I saw in the link was the image. I take it there’s more, and that it’s rather… deplorable?

        • Bobathonic

          I assume so.

          • Lance Thrustwell

            Probably a safe assumption.

    • The Militant Homosexual Agenda

Anyone who could possibly think of this as a ”benevolent warning” is too fucking stupid to be employed by law enforcement in any capacity.

    • Crystalclear12

Considering where he sourced it from it would be like going to a crack house to buy a sandwich.

Considering the afore mentioned steps involved, it’s faster and easier (and safer) to write your own.

    • AnnieGetYerFun

I think that’s the case, and I also don’t know that the person who posted it is a cop. Most of the people who handle social media for government entities are contractors or employees, but not on the beat. (I have a lot of friends in Chelan County, and one in particular who does social media for some of the utilities in the area, and she’s just a regular employee).

My oldhead neighbors have a Thin Blue Line flag on their front porch. Neither they nor anyone in their immediate family have been police officers. They also voted for Trump, warned us about the “Spanish” people down the road when we first moved in, and get all riled up when the only two black kids in the neighborhood play basketball in their own driveway during daylight hours. So I’m guessing the flag means they just like it when brown people get shot.

There seems to be a rather rampant belief that pedestrians only have right of way in a marked crosswalk. I was told this by a guy in a pickup truck who accelerated on my wife and I in a shipping center parking lot. The law requires that you yield right of way to pedestrians in all 50 states. Many states require a complete stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.

    • Skwerl the Nazi Puncher

And crosswalks do not have to be marked.

My point? Don’t run down people with your car.

Americans are so polite. No one stops for pedestrians in France. On the other hand pedestrians there are magically capable of stopping even a speeding car just by a hard stare.

      • puredog

Of course, in France, you know where you stand (or duck), which is arguably safer. Here, oblivious screen-tapping pedexes often assume (in places like the People’s Republic of Portland) that cars will stop for them. It boggles the mind. I mean, they don’t even glance up. Perhaps they have superhuman peripheral vision.

  • AnnieGetYerFun

I know we want to believe that everyone is horrible and cops are awful and stuff. But hear me out.

My guess would be that the person who posted this (most likely not a cop, since cops don’t tend to manage the social media for their departments) doesn’t use one Facebook login to manage different accounts. They probably log into their personal account, log out, and then log into the official Chelan County account.

Trust me, I grew up in Chelan County and I know a lot of people there – there are a LOT of assholes there who probably believe this, but it’s not something that the police force would officially endorse.

    • UncleTravelingMatt

They do hate ’em some Mexicans in Wenatchee, so I wouldn’t be too surprised.

      • AnnieGetYerFun

I’m from Wenatchee. I’m sure that’s probably the case.

    • If it’s Facebook, that’s not how it works… I manage multiple “companies” from my personal Facebook account. There isn’t a separate login per “page” (as much as I feel that would be a better system…)

      • AnnieGetYerFun

So, I use Facebook as well, and I am aware that it is possible to have a person account (with your own login name and password) and another account, tied to another email, that perhaps manages an official site’s page.

Meaning that this person probably posts on his/her personal Facebook account at one point during the day. At another point, he/she logs out of the personal account and then uses another email and password to log into a DIFFERENT ACCOUNT, one that is used to manage the Chelan County PD page.

My guess is that someone who follows the Chelan County PD on Facebook posted the splatter meme, and the person who manages social media was logged into the account that is used to manage the Chelan County PD Facebook page, and they shared it while forgetting that they weren’t logged into their personal account.

        • Old town Urbandale

          • AnnieGetYerFun

Right – that’s usually the case in government offices. Which is why I find articles like this one (“Oh, there’s NO WAY it was an accident because I Facebook so good; and ALL COPS ARE HORRIBLE) to be really fucking annoying. I love a good rant, but there are a LOT of presumptions in here.

I know that Chelan County is a hotbed of conservatism, and it makes me sad. But I really don’t think that the PD would have condoned this in any capacity.

And they wonder why people don’t trust the police. Or even hate them.

Look, I’m a white guy. Privilege fully acknowledged. But even I can’t stand them. One example: A year or two ago, here in DeeCee, I was waiting to turn right onto Wisconsin Ave. and some timid driver was in front of me, afraid to move out and turn right. After their fifth window passed, I honked at them, then honked again. A U.S. Secret Service cop (in a marked car) was parked nearby (it was near Sidwell Friends school, where the Obama girls went), and he bolted out of his car and over to my window yelling at me. Like I’d punched his mother or something. Just furious. Gave me this huge lecture.

Of course I didn’t say it at the time, but I really wanted to say, “Why are you so angry?” And also: “Shouldn’t you be making sure Sasha and Malia are safe, and not talking to me?” And also: “This is why people hate cops.”

    • Boojum

Secret Service guys on protective detail are very uptight. I’ve seen one scream at a campaign volunteer driver for stepping three steps away from her car.

    • Skwerl the Nazi Puncher

I had a cop get mad at me for backing up out of a street that was blocked by emergency vehicles. I had to ask him if he wanted me to drive into the emergency scene.

    • Bobathonic

I had a similar encounter – dude let several gaps go by, so I tapped on the horn – no loud blare, just a tap, like “yo, wake up!”. Moron slaps it into park, gets out, flashes some bullshit badge, makes a BS threat (to escalate what he already escalated) and blocks traffic to be more of a dick.

      • GoutMachine

That was it – right off the bat, he’s escalated the situation. Like, what do you think my response is going to be?

    • Persistent Tennessee Rain

In Philadelphia, in Chinatown, I got pulled over because my car registration had expired by 11 days (and yeah, those fuckers impounded my car, but I digress). My 14 year old daughter is in the seat next to me. The cop actually called for back up and another cop pulled in front of me to keep me from driving away. So, we are sitting there waiting for the tow truck and my kid says, “I need some air, can I get out of the car?” I said, “sure, honey.” She barely opened the door and had one foot on the ground when this big-ass cop jumps out of his vehicle, comes running toward her, gets in her face and screams, “Get back in the car! Get back in the car!” This is in no way “Protect and Serve.” This is “Harass and Demean.”

      • GoutMachine

Good Christ. What a fucking asshole. And horrific for your daughter.

        • Persistent Tennessee Rain

I guess, “I’m sorry, but could you please get back in the car,” just wouldn’t have worked on a 14 year old. *shrug*

The cops in an incredibly racist, right wing county are whiny assholes? No way.

    • P’jama Pahnts

      You forgot “deeply religious”

      • UncleTravelingMatt

I didn’t know about that. I’ve only been exposed to the racism and the conservatism.

        • AnnieGetYerFun

          Part and parcel.

          • UncleTravelingMatt

I believe it. I just always remember (even as a kid) no trip to Wenatchee being complete until we all learned some new anti-migrant slur. Ditto the Tri-Cities.

          • AnnieGetYerFun

Yeah, it’s changed a lot over the past 20 years since I left, but it’s still racially divided. Although I have to admit, at the last Apple Blossom parade, at least half of the participants were Hispanic. That was very different from when I was a kid. It felt better.

      • Sophie McMillan

no kidding. in a two block radius in Leavenworth there are 5 churches. We are very distrusted as we do not attend any of them

  • Resistance Fighter Callyson

Oh, good God. Think I’ll go watch some kittens on YouTube for a moment until my blood pressure settles back down.

    • george lastrapes

That gives me pause to imagine a splatterer as a brat on a tricycle, hoping to see a kitten on the sidewalk, and there it is, whoops, it’s darting across the street, he’s after it, BLAM- the kitten just misses getting creamed by the ice-cream truck, but the triker is not so lucky…..

not going to happen. that’s wine country dontcha know, plus kitschy fake bavarian town Leavenworth ( my home) is heaving with tourists.

  • Villago Delenda Est

It’s perfectly OK for LEOs to ignore the law.

    • WotsAllThisThen

That’s what Presidential pardons are for!

    • UncleTravelingMatt

They get pissy about it when you point it out to them, too. A couple days ago, I mentioned to one that he ran a stop sign in the courthouse parking lot. Man, was he mad at me.

    • BosGrl

I used to live on the same block as a state senator who routinely parked his car next to the hydrant in front of his house. People complained but, shrug…

    • Mr. Blobfish

I was leaving the supermarket on Sunday when two police cars come speeding up with lights flashing and sirens screaming. They screech to a halt at the front door………..then slowly get out and saunter into the store.

      • GoutMachine

Dallas police used to do this shit all the time. Flip the lights, run through the red, turn off the lights, continue on.

        • PubOption

I saw an Irving, TX police car stop at a red light, turn its lights on, go through the red light and then go into a Burger King. There didn’t seem to be a disturbance at the Burger King.

        Yes, you stumped me!

        • Daniel

          Sorry-
this man is Jason Pierce, of the band Spiritualized. He sometimes goes by the name J Spaceman.
Spiritualized released a very good album called Ladies and Gentlemen, We’re Floating in Space which was originally released in a drug-style blister pack with foil that you had to pop to get the disc out, like you’d get a gel capsule in.

Hence “space capsule” and Jason Pierce.

          • Ricky Gay

            Whoa. Katischhhh! Mind blown!

In Baltimore, people are pretty much always walking in the middle of the road. I’ve managed not to hit anyone yet, but then of course I’m not a psychopath.

    • YoBunnyBunny

From Baltimore, too. And believe or not, I’m more compassionate about pedestrians in the street than a whole lot of people from more “civilized” parts who like to look down their snouts at Baltimore.

When I go back to NC, I’m always shocked by how many drivers DO NOT slow or stop for pedestrians at crosswalks.

      • kareemachan

I just give them a death stare and dare them to run over me. Usually they stop and look busily at anything else but me.

  • Daniel

“Dude protest all you want but I have a job to get to and kids to pick up from daycare and now I’m late”

Someone doesn’t seem to understand how protest works.

“because your [sic] protesting an endangered butterfly in the rain Forrest [sic. For fuck’s sake.]”

Or the right of people not to be shot dead by police based on the colour of their skin.
Or the continued celebration of racist traitors on public property.
Or the rise of the neo-Nazis in the USA.

But your caricature is all the license you need to run people over instead of finding an alternative route.

Those lefties are so fucking entitled.

        • Daniel

          Cheney isn’t alive- that’s a mistake.

Cheney is entropy, the heat death of the universe in humanoid form. He’s not alive, it would be meaningless to ascribe that adjective to him. He merely is.
          And always will be.

  • Roadstergal

“I have things to do and I’m being briefly inconvenienced!”

“Yes, that is just the point of our protest. There are far too many people in this country who, every day, are inconvenienced to a much greater extent, via systemic racism and/or sexism. Can you imagine if you had this feeling you’re having right now – but all day, every day? Does this make you want to…”

  • Wolf Tracker

“The Sheriff’s Office of Chelan County is saying that this was done by accident, and that the staffer meant to share the meme to his own page.”

Which only tells me you are fine with your people having that attitude as long as it doesn’t get out in public.

They should clean the whole sheriff’s office out for this!

    • The Militant Homosexual Agenda

Like the woman who justified Trump’s “grab ’em by the pussy” comment by saying that if he knew he was being recorded he wouldn’t have said it.

      • Wolf Tracker

Many of them have this criminal thinking that it is only a crime if you get caught and getting busted is the problem not the crime.

“It’s the cop’s fault that I got the DUI.”

there are strong calls for that here. is being brushed off by the county in general as just a little “oopsie”. They are IMO determined to toe this line indefinitely. If you dont know, Chelan Co is a massive MAGA base and being a libtard snowflake is potentially dangerous due to the multitude of 2nd amendment/3%ers that reside here

  • WotsAllThisThen

So if I’m late for work and the guy in line in front of me at Starbucks is ordering a double half calf extra shot mochaccino with one and a half pumps of hazelnut and has to explain it again…. what does the sheriff’s office recommend I do?

    • puredog

Who among us has NOT lit up the slowpoke in front of us in line at Starbuck’s?

    • Bobathonic

  • YoBunnyBunny

So… People doing free speech in the street is a much more serious crime than vehicular homicide nowadays.

Where are all the #FREEZPEACHES and #ALLLIVESMATTER worry-warts to denounce this great injustice on American Democracy???

    • clubseal

Don’t dive too far down that rabbit hole, as you probably don’t want to know the answer.
That anyone would openly argue that being inconvenienced is a justifiable reason for homicide is pretty unthinkable in a civilized society.

      • TJ Barke

Actually that’s pretty much civilized as hell. Too inconvenient to stop burning fossil fuels, too inconvenient to try and treat workers like human beings, too inconvenient to stop child slavery and sweatshops, too inconvenient to let other countries with shit we want have democracy…

    • marxalot

Thing is, these are the people who just love authority. They love powerful demonstrations of brutality. They endorse authoritarianism, and this is interesting, even when it’s deployed against their demographic, because they just can’t get enough abuse of power.

I would like to know if the millennials are killing the seashell decorative soap industry. Does it extend to chocolates as well?

        • george lastrapes

Or their rustic handmade clocks. A little Nazi pops out of a door and announces the quarter-hour.

      • Daniel

“This used to be a sea shell shaped decorative soaps town,” Gus tells me, his voice rich and thick- Lavendar Lung or charming Real America, my own elitist background prevents me from saying for sure, but whichever will generate more sympathy in the reader is probably the case. “My pappy, his pappy, his pappy before him, all the way back to the Soap Rush of ’73. Yep. This ol’ town is a sea shell decorative soaps town. It’s not something you can teach, you know, it’s in the bone.”

I nod. I know. Ten minutes in this man’s charmingly scented presence tells me all I need to know about why this, like so many decorative gewgaw producing communities swung for Trump. I find myself looking at his hands, roughly manicured like generations of men’s before him, the clear coat cracked now, like the fabric of this community.

Millenials, it seems, would rather spend their money on lattes and avocado toast than seashell shaped decorative soaps- or scented candles. The factory in the next town over closed down months ago, thanks to swingeing budget cuts that were definitely the fault of Obama, the town now so riddled with despair it feels almost unspeakably crass to ask any of them how exactly he was to blame. And not far from there the drills of the essential oil wells have stopped moving, patchouli and jasmine are being brought in from China, Millenials like myself apparently preferring their scents to be affordable although even then there has been a severe downturn in their sales recently.

What is clear above all else as I look around the failing boutiques, stoically done up to something like their long ago prime to face off the inevitable like some silent era starlet holding back tears in her first, and final, talkie, is that this, all of this, is the fault of Millenials, and in turn the reason Trump was elected.

The Millenial left loves to pride itself on its openness, but in its blank refusal to indulge with simple decorative soaps, or to go joyfully even further into debt with spa dates and weekends in quaint B and Bs, it shows its true face. A face turned away from America’s heartland. A face that is, unlike real faces, only skin deep. Real America- in its decorative soap factories and doily manufacturers, in its antimacassaries and chintz wearhouses- is something far more than this shallowness allows. In the words of Ol’ Gus “it’s in the bone.”

        And it’s certainly not racist.

        • george lastrapes

I got dizzy trying to enumerate the levels of irony. Woohoo! Looking forward to more.

            Golden Calf- Fools’ Golden Bullshitter.

    • Angela Ruzzo

If you have to ARGUE the point, then you might be wasting your time, because many people are lacking the empathy gene. Also, there are a lot of people who, once they get in a car, think they own the world, and you can’t argue them out of this.

      • ahughes798

A very many, many are lacking the empathy gene. I have a friend who rescues stray, feral, and dumped cats in Harrisburg, PA and surrounding areas. She does TNR with the ferals, and finds homes for the others.

The things she tells me about the cats she’s rescued would turn your stomach. Apparently, throwing kittens (and puppies) out the window of a moving car is a thing there, and that’s not the worst of it. Setting them on fire is currently popular, too. Now, if someone could throw a kitten or puppy out a car window, or burn them alive…that would tell me a lot about that person. And that person needs to be removed from the gene pool via spay or neuter.

        • Angela Ruzzo

I agree, we don’t need them in the gene pool. The same thing happened constantly in Louisiana, where the thing to do if your cat has kittens, because you were too cheap or stupid to have it neutered, is to abandon them by the side of a road. That’s how I got my cat Julius – his mother was run over and his 4 siblings died of starvation before a neighbor’s kids heard Julius crying and brought him to my house. One of my neighbors who rented her condo skipped out, and a month later we discovered that she had left 3 dogs and 4 cats inside to starve to death. Apparently she couldn’t be bothered to take them with her??? What good thing she didn’t have children…yet.

    • clubseal

Oh, but they have to get to work, and will die if they don’t get there on time, or something?

We’re in an ugly place in America. And we have more guns than people circulating around.

It’s like a dry forest waiting for a lit match or cigarette.

But definitely not climate change, which doesn’t exist.

    • Wolf Tracker

The agenda of the NRA is to have another civil war and sell guns to both sides.

    • marxalot

Capitalism creates the category of “surplus population” which is another way to say “human garbage” and once you’ve accepted that people are a resource, only worth as much as they produce, and that we’re all interchangable, well! Of course life is cheap! There’s so much of it!
Oh, wow, the grrmad is still with me. Gotta take a break.

    • GHERKINS OF RESTIVENESS!

Funny, I had a wingnut try to sell me on the FOX-propagandized idea that the reason “life is so very cheapened nowadays” is all because of The Abortions That Are So Readily Available Everywhere™! If we only had more of a culture-of-life, this wouldn’t be happening! Sad-face!

I had to tell them to cool their fucking jets right fucking now because what about the shit-ton of weaponry out there? Those guns that are constantly glamorized in every teevee show, movie, videogame, and novel, and by every wingnut fuck imagining he’s gonna live out his vigilante crime-stopper fantasies? Hand-held tools built solely for the purpose of murder (or threatening murder) that their very own redstate conserva-knobs are trying their hardest to get allowed into every sort of public place, like restaurants, schools, and churches? Arguably the most powerful lobby in politics that is constantly promoting murder-tools as a necessity to defend your Walmart Plastic Shit… THAT isn’t cheapening the value of life??

Did I miss a fucking asterisk on that Commandment or something??

      • There was some story out there a while ago about someone firing at a shoplifter and I said something to the effect of, “Seriously? You’re going to kill someone over $10-$1,000 worth of stuff?”

To which a wingnut relative said, “Hell, yeah! If they don’t want to be killed, they shouldn’t break the law.”

Once these people get out on the road, they think they are gods and the road was built just for THEM.

    • The Militant Homosexual Agenda

And deny the fact that the road was built with other people’s tax dollars. ‘Cause socialism is evil.

    • ahughes798

I don’t have kids, but I’d be pissed as hell if the DMV took away my car. I like driving, no radio, and solitude. I like driving fast, and solitude. My dream trip is taking Hwy. 50 all the way to California. I like using the roads my tax dollars paid for. The people who think the roads are theirs usually drive Mercedes, or BMW’s, Ferrari’s or any exotic or high end ‘Murican car. And those kids with their hopped up Japanese cars. (Shakes fist at clouds) And people on motorcycles, especially lane splitters. I’ve always wanted to door one with votes, but it would wreck my door.

  • Good_Gawd_Yall

I decided awhile ago that, feeling helpless and rage-y about everything in the world, and being seized by a sense of powerlessness, I would do the one thing that is in my power to make myself and others feel better: be nice. I blow off steam here on Wonkette because otherwise the top of my head would fly off, but if you met me in person you would walk away thinking, “GGY is awfully nice.” There is no point in adding anger and rage to the world; being nice to people makes them, usually, be nice back to you.
If you’re running over people with your car because you have to pick up your kid from daycare, you’re doing all of it wrong. All. Of. It.

    • ariel_gee_398

Also, it may not be your fault that whatever shitty thing in your life happened, but it’s also not likely the fault of the person you’ve chosen to vent your spleen at.

      • The Militant Homosexual Agenda

And you just defined, “road rage”.

Inconvenience is not a justification for vehicular homicide, y’all. And streets/roads/thoroughfares aren’t only for cars! And the point of a protest is in fact to raise attention on an issue, often by impeding the mindless and heedless flow of traffic! I have a lot of grrmad about this, but I also have a free dark chocolate and coconut latte, so I will calm myself with this beverage and endure.

Reminds me of family road trips when I was a child, warm summer nights, mother looking at maps, father complaining about driving time and schedules and whatnot, and me curled up in the back seat being lulled to sleep by the heavy drone of the motor and thump-thump-thump of people falling under the wheels.

        • Hardly Ideal

Word. I mean, I’m white as they come, but big parts of my heritage are Irish and Romanian. Last I checked, the Nazis hated both of those groups.

And that’s the thing about purity. Where the hell does it stop? Because I’m not sure it does. As a poet once said: So long as there’s two people left on the planet, someone’s gonna want someone else dead.

          • ahughes798

I’d fail their test, too. I’m mostly Scottish, Irish, Dutch, German and Welsh.

I’m thinking of the so-called “peace officers” sitting in all day in a Wenatchee Dunkin Donuts: Blue Lives Fatter.

  • Fartknocker

Some quick and dirty math after 25+ years on a fire truck revealed that I’ve easily responded to 300-500 pedestrians vs motor vehicles. I don’t remember all of these incidents but 5-6 still haunt me, and many of them involved children who lost their parents or siblings. At a minimum, someone needs a week away from work without pay and one day rebuilding their empathy skills volunteering in a medical examiner’s office.

Assuming all these folks would feel the same way if it was an anti-choice protest that was in a street? Maybe a KKK protest? Etc? They do know not all protests are done by our side, right?

  • Ellie

It’s quite obvious to me that the Staff at Chelan County Emergency Management believe it’s perfectly acceptable, and even desirable to murder people they don’t like. That’s what the meme says, and that’s what the nonsense apology says. Fortunately for me, it’s unlikely that I’ll ever find myself there.

  • Sophie McMillan

being a wonkette who lives within Chelan Co I can tell you that many many people are very pissed off about this and are not buying the accident excuse. The mouth breathers in the county are brushing it off and telling people to stop being so easily offended. they are also excusing it because the person in question is not a full time employee of Chelan Co Emergency page

    • AnnieGetYerFun

I’m glad to hear that people are angry about it! I do personally think it was an accident, and I’m a raging liberal who can’t imagine moving back to the area (although I think I’d make an exception for Leavenworth or Cashmere, mostly because the surrounding area is so stunning).

      • Invidosa

I frankly don’t give a shit if it was an accident or not. It’s the fucking MINDSET that terrifies me

        • AnnieGetYerFun

But there’s a difference. An accident recognizes that the department wouldn’t endorse such a thing. A purposeful posting indicates that the culture of the police department would be supportive of the meme.

          • Kooolest G

I think the best way to handle it should be put all the cops in the dept in a line and say, “whoever here thinks it’s ok to post something like this on your Facebook page please step forward” then any cop who steps forward is fucking fired.

          • AnnieGetYerFun

Sure. But again, this wasn’t a cop.

          • Invidosa

I dunno, to me it seems, accident or not, the culture is supportive, just not in public. I’d like to think otherwise, Maybe I’m just jaded

          • AnnieGetYerFun

It’s entirely possible. I know some of the people on another local PD in the area, and they would never stand for that kind of crap. But I probably just don’t personally know the asshole cops, because I try to avoid assholes.

    • Rick Aucoin

I don’t understand why anyone is letting them make the discussion about whether or not this was an “accident” or a “mistake” instead of the repulsive bullshit that the meme represents and that at least one person there agrees with strongly?

  • qadesh

regardless of whether it was posted by “accident” to the official page, rather than the person’s personal page, the sentiment expressed is disgusting. that person certainly has absolutely NO business being in the “protect and serve” business.

    • Rick Aucoin

Yeah love how 100% of the discussion became about the “accident” instead of the repulsive bullshit meme.

Now that’s some effective control of the message, Sheriff. I’m very impressed.

  • Bitter Scribe

Something tells me that if you looked through all the files, the drawers, the “secret” gun range targets, etc. at that department you’d find stuff that was plenty more disturbing.

  • gratuitous

Really odd coming from law enforcement. I can’t remember how many times I’ve seen footage of a traffic stop where the driver of the stopped vehicle lurches forward or backward (either out of nervous anxiety or a planned move), and the cops immediately treat the situation as a life-threatening move by the driver, topping off the charges with attempted murder.

Now we have law enforcement just okey-dokey with motorists running down pedestrians. I’m pretty sure that la-de-dah attitude will NOT extend to motorists at traffic stops.

    • unmasked mumbler

Yeah, I’m grateful every single day for being born white; I have done certain involuntary nervous movements in front of cops that have “caused” many black and brown unarmed children to be shot to death.

Ex. cop asking me if I use my Dad’s tire pressure checker (looks like a small aluminum baseball bat) to hit people. I looked at it and automatically pointed towards it before explaining what it was and how it is used.

  • Alienist

It is a shame that the average American’s facility with English and his emotional awareness are so poor that he chooses to say, “All Lives Splatter” instead of “I get frustrated when people interfere with what I want to do.” Instead of identifying himself as irritated, angry, furious, outraged, etc., he fantasizes of criminal acts of violence but with him as an underdog hero.

This should not surprise us, though, because around the nation laws are being proposed and enacted allowing people to assault others with their feelings being used as a legal defense. “Stand your ground” laws allow people to shoot others based on the shooter being afraid. Police can claim “fear for their lives” as sufficient reason to shoot and kill unarmed citizens. We are becoming a nation in which transient, irrational emotions are valued more highly than the life of its citizens.

I live in the town where this occurred and am happy to say that within literally minutes, a number of us had saved and shared the screenshot, posted to the page with complaints, and called the sheriff’s office. It’s a red town, but we have a strong blue contingent. I think the woman who posted did in fact do it by accident (I don’t she she’s the brightest bulb on the tree), but I don’t care – more disturbing is her redneck attitude, echoed by many here. They should keep their embarrassing, ignorant ideas to themselves.

  • OrdinaryJoe

If mistakes were made, in the passive tense sense, did it even happen?

  • suziq

It does not really matter but Vancouver WA is in Clark County, not Chelan County. The east side of the state is pretty red because farmers. They probably did think it was hilarious and I don’t believe it was a mistake either.

    • brucej

Farmers who hate the evil gummint that built their gd irrigation dams that let them actually farm what should be stinking desert.

(saw a documentary about the Grand Coulee dam a few weeks back, and lo&behold much of it was all about fucking over the native people who lived there for the profit of white folks.)

      • suziq

Yup, the farmers are all “small government ” republicans that want lower taxes because they don’t want to pay for anything. Except of course they want their subsidies and all the farm handouts. Though mostly they seem to be the large company farms so you would the people there would realize they are the ones getting screwed.

    • BouncyFlyer

To be honest, most anywhere in Clark County that’s -not- Vancouver is pretty hard right (so much so, that the rural folk attempted to secede from “them libruls” in the early 90s (they failed, but now they have the county commission locked up, so there’s no longer a need).

  • Bigby

So, if I’m driving along and I come across a Proud Boys/Alt-right/Bundy-symp protest of armed to the teeth assfucks, as long as they’re keeping me from my latte or a Naomi Klein symposium, I can run them over and it’s cool with the po-po? • ahughes798

I saw SO many of these on bumpers and for sale at Webster’s Flea Market in FL. There was always at least one completely right wing t-shirt/bumper sticker/book vendor there every time I went. And out in the back, which was more like a yard sale, there was always a guy you could buy guns from. No background check, no ID, no nothing, just cash on the barrel head.

I know it’s evil, but I wish someone would come up with a conservative hunting permit.

      • There’s no need for a conservative hunting permit because they do a good enough job of shooting themselves — red states have a horrendous number of people killing each other in “hunting accidents”, children shooting other children with guns they “found”, and so forth. Unfortunately, they also breed faster than they shoot themselves :(.

        • Now THAT would be a fun car decal/
“No need for a conservative hunting permit: You dipshits tend to thin out your own herd”

      • unmasked mumbler

There’s a part of my town (recently listed as most conservative city in USA by some think tank) where I constantly see the most fucked up bumper stickers and decals. A few years ago I saw “SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL DEATH SQUAD” and recently I saw a parody of those family decals, but instead of stick figures it was skulls with nazi helmets. Fucking hell.

Interesting update on this situation- this is via Indivisble WA

REPORT on discussion with SHERIFF BURNETT today re: the All Lives Splatter meme: We had a positive discussion in which we found some common ground and, I believe, made some important progress.
    1. importantly, he was unaware that the meme had been created and used by white supremacists to celebrate the murder of Heather Heyer. he took down some information to research that. he also felt that the woman who posted was also not aware of the use/history of the meme. i do believe this is possible, since we know how many ppl are not large consumers of media. he has known this woman the entire time he has been there. im just offering that as information.
    2. learning the use/history of the meme was a piece of info that helped him to understand the huge reaction it has gotten and put it more fully into perspective.
    3. the twitter post was an automatic post and he believes she hadn’t realized it posted automatically. im not familiar enough with twitter to know how this works.
    4. he acknowledged that she should not have been responding to the messages back to her in the hours after it was shared and that there was room for improvement there.
5.if he was motivated to fire her (definitely sounds like not and I did not request that), he could not do so as there are policies and procedures in place to protect employees.
    6. when asked what actions were taken to ensure errors in posting don’t happen again, he said they changed her settings and that he was considering having someone else take over managing that page along with the sheriffs page. i believe that is what he said, but further clarification may come out and “considering” is my word.
    7. the posts that disappeared were not deleted but were “hidden” and said that is within compliance with law and he is not worried about trouble with that. he said the posters and their friends can still see the posts but the public cannot.
    8. i stated that we were doubly concerned because the petition of the supporters of keeping the Robert E Lee school name had circulated throughout the country and it is dangerous to be drawing that kind of attention to our area while at the same time having law enforcement appear to have sympathizers. i believe he was moved by that point and we discussed the difference between being merely offended by something and creating harm. i think this was a new connection he was making between something he had thought was merely offensive to something that could potentially be dangerous. he said he would share that information at the staff meeting they were having today.
    9. i asked if he would be open to training specific to this incident and he immediately said they are always looking at training that has value for the cost of the time it takes to do them and they have multiple kinds of training in different areas. i asked if i could tell our members that he will be looking into what training would be useful in this instance and he said yes and added we could send in our recommendations.
    10. he said they have training available thru the county risk pool
    11. when i brought up subject of link to REL issue, he said he had been listening to conversation about it on the radio and had wanted to know the history surrounding the choice of naming the school and that would influence whether he thought it should change or not. i told him about the Lost Cause Movement and that it was named one year after Brown vs. Board, not coincidentally. he hadn’t known about that.
    12. I asked him if i could check back with him to see what choices they had made for training and he said yes. i wish i had asked him to make a statement saying they would be pursuing it, but i think i’ll do that today.
    ADDING!
    13. When we were discussing how the posting had occurred, he said something about finding out more when they looked into it and i asked “so you’re investigating how it happened,” and he replied, “yes.” i did not ask if they would be making that public. im sorry to have originally left this off..there was a lot of info.

    • …common ground.
Common ground with people who think it is funny to run over people in their car because they are “protesting” something.
And “endangering” their lives by blocking a road. Which means nothing moves and no lives are endangered and all.
Also that bit about “Oh, no one knew it was a white supremacist meme!!!!” is horse shit.

      • Amalga

And I read somewhere this Sheriff is part of the “constitutional Sheriffs” org.

  • Seems to me the morans realized that some on the left are just as armed as they…and bonus, actually know how to shoot. Time to ramp it up? FFS
Does not matter if this was an accident or meant to be a “joke.” It is worse that a public employee- who does indeed get paid from people’s taxes- thinks it is hilarious! To mow that public down if they get in the way.
BTW….stand your ground, rightwingnuts. That goes both ways.

This oughta raise your blood pressure 10 points. From Willamette Week.

Vancouver Police Say Officers Released Driver Who Nearly Ran Over Antifa Protesters Because “He Was Scared”
Vancouver Police Lt. Kathy McNicholas says the officers did not write a citation and made no arrest because they could not establish probable cause or intent.

    • HazooToo

Ok, so, being inside a large metal container that can move faster than a human, and aiming that container at a person, deliberately, is not a crime if you were scared they might throw a rock at your large metal container and scratch it slightly.

    • Tiny kaiju

Does their logic would make it OK to crash into an accident site or road workers if the road is blocked? They might be scared that they would have to slow down to avoid hitting something, right?

      • eddi_the_Bad_Hombre

Talking with road crews at my old job, it would seem there is a sort of driver who does that. It’s no stretch from making a flagger dodge to doing it to a protester. And road workers and law officers are regularly struck by passing cars refusing to yield. Oregon DOT has a wall of names of people who died on the job.

In short, there are border-line psychos who regularly cross that border at the least excuse. “As a matter of fact, I DO own the road.”

  • Regret

This proves that cars are more important than people.
Think on that for a minute.
