I want YOU to stop being a national embarrassment

Donald Trump took bold action on an issue of national importance today, announcing that transgender people would no longer be allowed to serve in the military “in any capacity” because they are just too weird and icky for him to handle:

Trump’s announcement — by Twitter. We have a president who issues policy directives by Twitter, in between rants. That is NOT NORMAL — reverses a decision announced in June 2016 by Barack Obama’s secretary of Defense, Ash Carter. Carter’s announcement came after a yearlong review of the policy after it was suggested by Obama; we’re betting that, the stuff about “consulting with generals and experts” notwithstanding, Trump’s announcement followed something he saw on Fox News. Huffington Post social media editor Ethan Klapper may have found the Smoking Dumb:

Oh, and to appease the Gods of Irony, Trump’s tweet reversing civil rights for transgender service members comes on the anniversary of Harry S Truman’s executive order desegregating the military in 1948.

Reports are already coming in that the sudden reversal of policy came as a complete surprise to many in the defense establishment; Trump doesn’t appear to have consulted the Senate Armed Services Committee:

John McCain, chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued a statement objecting to Trump’s tweeted policy-making:

The Wall Street Journal is also reporting that the Pentagon was taken by surprise by the announcement:

“The tweet was the first we heard about it,” said a defense official familiar with the matter.

As with most of Trump’s Instant Policies, it’s not entirely clear what will happen to trans people who are already serving, as if they were actually people with lives and careers and families. Trump has decided they are a problem, so they will be dealt with, and someone else can handle the details.

The Washington Postreports that beyond a brief statement promising to “continue to work closely with the White House to address the new guidance provided by the Commander-in-Chief” and to “provide revised guidance to the Department in the near future,” the Pentagon is referring all questions to the White House. Translation: Donald Trump consulted with his dick and the television.

The Daily Beast reports that the decision was pushed in part by Vice President and Christianist Weirdo Mike Pence, and that the Pentagon had no idea the announcement was coming, not that officials will ever go on the record with that. One trans service member speculated, “When (Trump) makes a statement that he’s talking to generals, the generals exist in his head.”

Some staffers in the Pentagon were every bit as astonished as everyone else, according to reporters from
Buzzfeed and the Military Times:

Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis had announced at the end of June that the Department of Defense would take another six months — at the request of the Joint Chiefs of Staff — to review going ahead with allowing transgender recruits. That review related only to allowing new recruits who are trans to serve; there appears to have been no discussion at the time about rescinding the policy protecting serving members of the military put in place last year. It appears Trump’s tweet may make any further Pentagon review moot, though of course today’s decision will almost certainly result in a flood of lawsuits.

DoD’s website still includes a “Special Report” and guides to implementation of the Obama policy:

That page also still includes a video on Ash Carter’s announcement of the policy, in which Carter says,

Our mission is to defend this country, and we don’t want barriers unrelated to a person’s qualifications to serve preventing us from recruiting or retaining the soldier, sailor, airman, or Marine who can best accomplish the mission.

Carterhad this to say in response to Trump’s announcement:

Carter’s point was echoed this morning by Joe Biden, whose Twitter feed has mostly focused on healthcare lately. Old Handsome Joe was appropriately disgusted:

Florida Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen agreed with the former Democratic veep:

As for Trump’s contention that the Pentagon simply can’t handle the enormous economic burden of gender reassignment surgery (which only some trans people even want, not that Trump would know), a RAND Corporation study undertaken during the Obama administration’s yearlong review found there would be relatively low costs:

Using private health insurance claims data to estimate the cost of extending gender transition–related health care coverage to transgender personnel indicated that active-component health care costs would increase by between $2.4 million and $8.4 million annually, representing a 0.04- to 0.13-percent increase in active-component health care expenditures.

As one troublemaking fact-nerd pointed out on Twitter, that compares to $84 million a year the Pentagon spends on Viagra. Or, if you prefer another metric, Brian Sims, a state legislator from Pennsylvania, noted on Facebook that the high end of the RAND estimate is probably well below what the federal government has already spent this year on golf outings for Donald Trump.

An administration official was remarkably open about the real motivation for the decision, telling Jonathan Swan of Axios that the decision was all about culture war politics:

This forces Democrats in Rust Belt states like Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin, to take complete ownership of this issue. How will the blue collar voters in these states respond when senators up for re-election in 2018 like Debbie Stabenow are forced to make their opposition to this a key plank of their campaigns?

It’s difficult to see how this will really be a decisive issue in 2018, since the people who spend all their time freaking out about trans people in the bathroom are already voting Republican. As for broad national appeal, it seems unlikely, given that just two weeks ago, the Trump-loving House of Representatives couldn’t get enough votes to bar the Pentagon from spending funds on gender reassignment surgery; the amendment to the defense authorization died in a 209-214 vote, and 24 Republicans voted against it.

Still, there are plenty of bigots who will now decide that even if he’s saying mean stuff about Jeff Sessions and taking away their healthcare, Donald Trump is still their best pal, a regular guy who understands what’s good for America: making life miserable for minorities that Trump voters hate.

        • shivaskeeper

It took around 18 months to lift DADT officially. Policy drafts and reviews, debates on implementation, what to do about anyone who was busted for being gay in the past if anything, What to do with Soldiers facing a discharge for being gay while to policies are being written, training for when it was finally approved. Announcing it now gives lead time to draft the policy because it all take time. Trans = icky is not a policy.

There is a possibility he thinks the military will work via a Tweet, but it ain’t so. He is also probably misconstruing the request for further review of new trans recruits as the DoD backing this idea. But I have no real idea what he’s thinking.

One of my favorite stories of the Civil War era is of Jennie Hodgers, and she fought as Albert Cashier. She enlisted in Illinois and she fought the entire Civil War without being discovered and ended up living out the rest of her life as a man for another fifty years. She even ended up receiving a military pension and living at the sailors’ and soldiers’ home in Illinois as a veteran.
Even though it seems pretty outstanding that women were disguising themselves as men and going off to fight, it seems like actually they were accepted amongst their peers. This kind of loyalty to your fellow soldier in battle did in certain cases transcend gender.

    • Alienist

      Mr. Trump,

As a Christian who believes the Bible, which I wonder if you’ve read, please consider God’s word to his chosen people. Your worship means nothing if it does not have the deeds to accompany it.

      Amos 5:11-24
11 Therefore because you impose heavy rent on the poor
And exact a tribute of grain from them,
Though you have built houses of well-hewn stone,
      Yet you will not live in them;
You have planted pleasant vineyards, yet you will not drink their wine.
12For I know your transgressions are many and your sins are great,
You who distress the righteous and accept bribes
And turn aside the poor in the gate.
13Therefore at such a time the prudent person keeps silent, for it is an evil time.
      14Seek good and not evil, that you may live;
And thus may the LORD God of hosts be with you,
      Just as you have said!
      15Hate evil, love good,
And establish justice in the gate!
Perhaps the LORD God of hosts
May be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.
16Therefore thus says the LORD God of hosts, the Lord,
“There is wailing in all the plazas,
And in all the streets they say, ‘Alas! Alas!’
They also call the farmer to mourning
      And professional mourners to lamentation.
17“And in all the vineyards there is wailing,
Because I will pass through the midst of you,” says the LORD.
18Alas, you who are longing for the day of the LORD,
For what purpose will the day of the LORD be to you?
      It will be darkness and not light;
19As when a man flees from a lion
      And a bear meets him,
Or goes home, leans his hand against the wall
      And a snake bites him.
20Will not the day of the LORD be darkness instead of light,
Even gloom with no brightness in it?
21“I hate, I reject your festivals,
Nor do I delight in your solemn assemblies.
22“Even though you offer up to Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings,
      I will not accept them;
And I will not even look at the peace offerings of your fatlings.
      23“Take away from Me the noise of your songs;
I will not even listen to the sound of your harps.
24“But let justice roll down like waters
And righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

Please take this as a serious attempt to urge you to reconsider your shallow, short-sighted impressions of what religion should be.

We’ve been through this so many times. First it was blacks. Then it was women in frontline positions. Then it was homosexuals. Now it’s transgender people.

Every time the scream from the retrograde idiots is “It will disrupt the unit! The military should not be a social experiment lab!”

And every single time, there has been zero proof that integrating, desegregating, mixing genders, or allowing LGBTQ individuals to serve openly has ever resulted in degradation of unit readiness, unit cohesion, or unit morale.

          • Gayer Than Thou

He won Utah, but he only received 45.9% of the vote in Utah. Not a stellar number for a Republican candidate in a red state. And only 28.8% of eligible voters even bothered to vote, the third-lowest rate in 2016. I sense a lack of enthusiasm.

It absolutely isn’t. You think that because he makes very strong conjectures (always id’ing them as conjectures)–the same as here, actually. He has a barrage of attackers, also the same as here, who are trying to derail him as “fake.”

      • Martini Ambassador 🍸

Damn, I just grabbed the first link. But I also think I saw a few other ones. I’ll fix.

      • Cat Cafe for the Prosecution

No, no, no, not at all. It’s Bill Palmer, a neighbor of mine, who started a pro-Hillary activist FB page during the election, with hundreds of thousands of followers, and then became so utterly frustrated with the barrage of lies and misrepresentations that he started his own website trying to make sure that the truth got reported.

The FB page is now “Trump is not my President,” and on his website he works tirelessly all day, every day, to present his analysis and thoughts about what is happening, always conscientious about linking to facts and other reports. His site is very similar to Wonkette, only completely serious, and it’s just him. He gets barraged with people calling him “fake,” because he’s reporting on what’s actually happening, and making the same conjectures you and I are making right here, or that Wonkette makes, and many, many of his early connecting-the-dots reports then turn out to be absolutely what’s happening. Please support him!!!

A month later, down came a request for us to build six of them, and ready them for use in a live environment. Our response was “No. And what part of “prototypes” and “needs testing” didn’t you people understand?” We thought we were being greedy asking for the funding for two of them…

        • Bobathonic

How do you think USAF got the F-117? No two were alike, they were hand built after Hopeless Diamond worked.

          • This was a mobile water pollutants monitoring lab. What we wanted the prototypes for was to see how the various monitoring and detection systems we’d developed (or were still developing) in the lab could be installed, and how they’d actually work out in the real world. Almost 3/4’ths of the tests we were planning on trying, we weren’t sure would make it into the final version. Not to mention the little issue of getting them validated for regulatory purposes. But the Army thought “good idea,” and wanted us to build six to put on site at some of their post clean-up sites.

  • Nockular cavity

He came up with this policy during breakfast this morning. He was consulting General Mills.

  • Arki J. Kirwin-Muller

First up: I’m transgender. I’m a transwoman who is on hormone therapy, but has not yet had surgery.

    This
policy that’s been put out by Sir Tweets-A-Lot is just another example
of what I am calling The New Cruelty. It started yesterday, with debate
opening on the ACA repeal and now with this, it seems that we could be
heading into an area of new segregationist policy in the military.

There are many, many brave transgender people who have fought, have been injured, have died, and have saved lives.

    To
say that they shouldn’t be able to serve and potentially could even be
discharged in a non-honorable way, is a disgusting act from our
    president.

This will only hurt the military, reduce the willingness of people to serve and damage America’s standing in the world.

It could also lead to a rise in violence, disenfranchisement, discrimination and other negatives against the trans community.

We still don’t know how this will play out.

    And
we have no idea what’s going to come down the pipeline next. A ban on
birth control for women soldiers? Discrimination against LGBTQ folks in
federal jobs, or with federal or defense contractors?

Where will this re-segregationist administration and its dehumanizing actions end? I don’t know.

But I’m feeling pretty afraid for the future.

And if you took the time to read all this, thanks. It’s appreciated.

I think the first step is impeaching and removing the evil dictator you elected.”

      • Richard Jokes

If that was gonna happen it would have. There are some groups in Europe advocating for a ban on firearms exports to the U.S. like they do for other countries that can’t keep their citizens from shooting eachother.

Super fucking cynical for the administration to think that transgendered service personnel being allowed to serve in the defense of our nation is an issue likely to cause Democrats to lose votes. If anything, Dems coming out in full force opposing this discrimination will GAIN them voters who would otherwise be less enthusiastic. This is 2017 and there aren’t many people left who don’t know at least one transgendered person personally.

Only knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers are freaked out by all things LGBTQ and that is Donnie’s base.

My mother plays bridge with a large bridge club for seniors in Kansas. One night at the gathering, it was also a potluck and there were 8 to a table. One person brought that there child was homosexual and he was proud of them. The other six also said that they had LGBTQ+ children as well.

Unfortunately, I am an only child and I am such a disappointment to her — she felt so left out

      • Pre-Existing Condition Jack

Honestly, all of my IRL friends are LGBTQ. Not a pandering statement, just an actual fact. I have seven actual friends in total. I got two through my wife and the other five I knew from the theatre circuit. I made ends meet by doing hair and make-up for drag shows at a bar called The Quest in Birmingham. I also worked with Birmingham AIDS outreach on a voluntary basis when my best friend Tigger and his partner got sick.

It’s really changed a lot, even in red states like Alabama and parts of the Gulf Coast. Nobody in my in-law side of the family has any prejudices against any LGBT people. I have a brother-in-law who is very out. He’s anb asshole and a drug abuser, but that’s beside the point.

I think most people are in a much different place than these old white bastards in the administration. We’re just not “freaked out” by this at all. Whether we truly “understand” being transgendered or not, we mostly just think “meh! Let people be what makes them comfortable. I’ve got more important things to worry about than whose wearing a dress and for what reason”.

        • Elendira

It’s 2017. Everybody knows a LGBTQ+ person or is related to one. Its like a really simplified version of 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon except its just one degree of gayness!

Carlson was born on May 16, 1969!
He was but 21 around the time of the First Gulf War and but 31 on 9-1, but has as much service at Trump, ZERO!
Any one know what held him back?

Carlson does not consider Russia a serious threat to US interests.[37] Carlson has called for the United States to work with Russia in the Syrian Civil War.[38] He opposes overthrowing Bashar al-Assad.[37] According to Peter Beinart of the Atlantic, Carlson has been an “apologist for Donald Trump on the Russia scandal”.[37] Carlson described the controversy in the wake of revelation that Donald Trump Jr. was willing to accept anti-Clinton information from a Russian government official as a “new level of hysteria” and said that Trump Jr. had only been “gossiping with foreigners.”

      The meds do help.

      • Pre-Existing Condition Jack

To be fair, though, I was on meds long before this. Thirty years and counting. These are just different meds. I need more time for them to build up before drinking on top of them. Hairy times.

        • Ω cynmac will never surrender

I was in the hospital twice last year before my meds were straight. I have a physical condition on top of the mental. I’ve gained some weight and that affected them too.

          • Pre-Existing Condition Jack

Feel you there. It’s a constant adjustment for me and it’s only worsened by the fact that after moving to Ocean Springs from Birmingham, nobody treats with any form of Benzos. Sucks becausse benzos worked well for me for twenty years. Now I’m on the SSRI train because I have no real choice.

Physical? Massive nerve pain, like shards of broken glass. Didn’t feel it so much on the old meds, but hit big after the change.

Sorry about your situation. If you have to go back in. give me an address and I’ll send you a card or something. Cards always help me get through a hospital stay.

          • Ω cynmac will never surrender

I have peripheral neuropathy, which is nerve pain. Have you been evaluated? I was already on Cymbalta for that and for depression. If your liver function is normal, you can take it but if not they prescribe Lyrica.
While I was in the hospital, the dosage got increased and then Neurotin was added.
Then I was also diagnosed with Bipolar II which is weird. How did I ever achieve all that I did as undiagnosed, unmedicated bipolar? But ok, 3 more meds. Then in May, I got gastritis so that’s another one. My cell phone is programmed with alarms to remind me to take the meds.
Good news is that I have applied for Social Security early (I’m 55) and the application is in progress. They have almost all my medical records.

          • Pre-Existing Condition Jack

I have been evaluated and diagnosed with neuropathy eight years ago. I’m on neurontin for that and they recently had to bump it up from 200 mgs to 600. I also have calcium deposits in my wrists in addition to nasty carpel tunnel in my left hand. Seeing a specialist for that in a few weeks. Already have a brace, but I’m caving in to get the surgery. I hear good things about the surgery.

          • Ω cynmac will never surrender

I’ve been having migraines since age 17 and was taking barbiturates for them, until I was put on Cymbalta a few years ago. I’m up to 900 mgs of Neurotin a day.
Good luck with the doctor and the evaluation.

          • Pre-Existing Condition Jack

How did you deal with the stomach issues and the drowsiness of Neurotin at that level? Looking for any hacks for that, really.

          • Daniel Nee

How do you deal with the I forgot my neronin rages. Nvld pluse epilepsy and the normal bag of Nero/psy probs. Also come to mass. We are a socialist utopia up in here at least in the metro Boston aria

          • Pre-Existing Condition Jack

I can answer the ‘I forgot my Neurontin’ rage question. I’m taking eighteen pills a day on a very rigid schedule, so I have a daily pill box. Fill it up for the week and take the daily part out, if that makes any sense. It’s a weekly box with each days being a separate removable box, very handy and I never forget my meds that way.

That said, this is him pissing in the wind. This isn’t an executive order, and the process of actually kicking out all the trans people would involve actual follow-through, not to mention a good 10-20 thousand lawsuits. So Pence and these other mysterious WH staffers have revealed that a) they too believe the “Trump voters only care about their economic anxieties” thesis to be bullshit, b) they fully acknowledge there will be no achievements on that front by next year — no coal jobs, no terrific health insurance, no infrastructure jobs, no steel tariffs, nothing, and that c) it completely doesn’t matter because the base is such a bunch of bigoted morons that all the RNC has to turn up with is a trans-ban and that will more than suffice to assure victory.

How wonderful that his brave moral stance was in fact taken for a completely base and amoral reason:

Specifically, Politico writes that “an internal House Republican fight over transgender troops” threatened to blow up a deal in the House of Representatives that would have provided funds for Trump’s proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

When anti-trans Republicans told Trump that they would hold up funding for the wall unless he barred transgender people from serving in the military, Politico writes that Trump “didn’t hesitate” to announce his opposition to transgender service members.

Back in the bad old days prior even to “Don’t ask, don’t tell” I was a combat infantryman in the the first Gulf War. A couple of soldiers I served with were gay, and one had gender dysphoria and was planning on getting reassignment surgery after she got out. All of them risked dishonorable discharge and that black mark on their lives had they been found out. If anything they were MORE patriotic because not only were they risking the usual death/injury/mental issues, but also a very real threat to their careers for the rest of their lives if they were found out. All of them were good soldiers, and I trusted them with my life. That is the only fucking thing that should matter.

Also if someone is willing to face death, etc. they should be able to get whatever kind of gender reassignment surgery they want. Especially since they could get literally ANY other Federal job that isn’t actually life threatening and have that as a benefit.
