Typical Wonkette parties are like this

OH HELLO, Wonkers, are you a Chicagoan or a Detroiter or a Minneapolino? (That’s what people in Minneapolis call themselves, correct? We’ll look that up NEVER and get back to you.) You might remember we told Chicago and Detroit that Wonkette is rolling on through in the Wonkebago this week, and that is still happening. But GUESS WHAT WE ARE COMING TO MINNEAPOLIS TOO! So cancel whatever you are doing TOMORROW NIGHT (Tuesday) because you are coming to the Wonkette party instead. Sorry about your other “plans.”

Details:

WHEN: 4-7 PM

WHERE: City of Minneapolis, just look for us!

WHERE FOR REAL: Bar Luchador! It is in Stadium Village on the U of M campus! The address is 825 SE Washington Avenue, the location of which you can find by referring to “maps.”

Chicago, remember we are in you on WEDNESDAY at 6 PM at the Margaret Burroughs Beach Park at 3100 S. Lake Shore Dr. Bring blankets and camping chairs and foods and vegetarian foods for grilling and NOT CHICAGO PIZZA.

Detroit, you are next, and that is on FRIDAY, June 6, at the Belle Isle Park, “in the open land across the road from the giant slide,” according to our previous post. Here is a map of the park, where “Giant Slide” is helpfully labeled as “H.” Apparently it costs $10 ameros to get into the park if you are driving, but if you take the bus it is free, so you just decide how you want to handle all that.

Detroit people should also bring “all the things” to the park.

For the rest of you, it is time for your open thread, so chit-chat or whatever, we don’t know.

Wonkette is fully funded by readers like you! If you love us, click below, for to fund us!

Chicago, remember we are in you on WEDNESDAY at 6 PM

I didn’t see condoms and lube on that list… which seems like it might be important based on the invite.

    I could be wrong.

    • Historicat

Always a good idea to be prepared.

  • Jamoche

Who the shit decided that suede would be the only material shoes are made from now? Because that person deserves a dick punch. Sure I want shoes that will make my feet sweat even more than they already do and are irrevocably filthy looking after five minutes of walking.

(It might have been my cousins who design shoes. I should ask them and distribute dick punches/cunt punts as appropriate)

    • HazooToo

They are ruined the second you step outside. Pass.

      • Thiazin Red

Right?! I can only assume people who buy suede shoes never walk outside more than a block.

    • msanthropesmr

      Brown shoes don’t make it

  • House0fTheBlueLights

Hey Chicago (esp far north side), I have a busted wrist, not sure I’ll be able to drive. Anybody with wheels heading from RP or Edgewater-ish?

Oh, and there WILL be Chicago pizza if I can get there. You don’t throw down the gauntlet like that and not expect to be called on it.

  • Skwerl the Taco Hunter

Yayayayaya! See you on the morrow round five!

  • UnsaltedSinner

This is pretty much my impression as well.

“A pathetic, gun-humping shit bag – and a GOP member of Congress.” But you repeat yourself…

      • Bub, Zombie of the Resistance

There are millions of pathetic, gun-humping shit bags who aren’t GOP members of Congress. Some of them – I’ve heard this, but I’m not sure if I believe it – are alleged to be almost as stupid as Louie Gohmert!

        • The Wanderer

I’ve met a few of them. Discord’s nards, but they’re a stupid bunch.

    • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

“Cajun John Wayne”? Is is afraid of horses and also too drinks like a fish whilst avoiding military service?

      • TJ Barke

What kinda hippie unamerican snowflake is afraid of horses? *spit*

        • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

          Right?

      • The Wanderer

        Original name Marion?

        • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

Yup. I mean, I love the Duke’s movies, but he was a movie actor, not an Actual Cowboy/Marine/Badass.

Also too –The Green Berets – the worst big-budget war movie ever, or not quite as awful as The Battle of the Bulge? Discuss.

          • The Wanderer

TGB was pure propaganda, and filmed in Alabama. It had Jack Soo and George Takei in it, though, along with David Jansen.

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

            “I like how you talk!”

And don’t forget Aldo Ray as Master Sgt. Muldoon! Some Dumb-Looking Guy as Captain McDaniels, and the Sun setting in the East!

          • The Wanderer

And a supporting cast of several.

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

            xD

            “Peterson!”

          • The Wanderer

Yep, and was there a point of having the orphan kid’s dog die? Nope; just pure schmaltz.

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

Yup. *After* the little girl Jansen’s character gave a necklace too was also too murdered.

            Damn Communists.

          • The Wanderer

            Like I said, propaganda.

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

“Chi-Com K50! Chinese Communists! What we’re talking about here is Communist domination of the World!”

          • The Wanderer

Laying it on with a trowel.

          • Bub, Zombie of the Resistance

I think the “Green Berets” takes it by virtue of the ending scene with the sun setting over the South China Sea.

          • The Wanderer

            Yep.

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

xD Plus, the psuedo James Bond Girl sleeps with VC officer Bullshit. WTF was that all about?

          • The Wanderer

“We’ve got stock footage of a midair pickup, so by god we have to design a scene around it!”

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

            Yep, the STABO rig.

          • The Wanderer

Thank you! I couldn’t remember the term.

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

NP. They are pretty cool to see in action. A scene where they used it to recover a downed aviator might even have made fucking sense or something.

I read the first page. This is really fun stuff.

            Aye. It really is.
There’s far too many crappy stories on that site, but damn if there ain’t some really damn good ones though.

      • SadDemInTex

I think you need to write a book on military history (it doesn’t even have to be non-fiction, per se…just your personal musings on various random facts).

    • jesterpunk

He seems nice, bless his heart.

  • Spotts1701, Resistance Pilot

Well, I’m sure that nothing could POSSIBLY go wrong with this.

      Yeah. That’ll fix it

    • Vincent Ricola

I hope the families boycott in solidarity with the Khans.

  • The Wanderer

The disgruntled employee who killed five people before killing himself was IDed as John Neumann, Jr., 45, of the Orlando area. Army veteran, lived alone, and “didn’t appear to belong to any type of subversive or terrorist organization.”

    • Msgr_MΩment

I blame the VA for coddling people from that violent organization.

      • The Wanderer

I blame the VA for not upgrading their systems, facilities, and services so that they can actually help veterans.

        • Jamoche

And it cascades back to Congress for not funding it.

          • The Wanderer

            Absolutely.

    • jesterpunk
      • The Wanderer

        Don’t hold your breath.

    • ariel_gee_398

So, he managed to kill almost as many people as the three attackers in London, all by himself. I wonder what the difference was that made him so much more deadly. There must be some critical thing that we are overlooking that allowed him to kill so many, so easily.

      • jesterpunk

        George Soros?

      • The Wanderer

Well, he wasn’t armed with Mr. Stabby, but with Mr. Shooty.

      • TJ Barke

He wasn’t as weakened by European homosexual communism?

        • The Wanderer

He lived in the Orlando area, home of Rat World. The constant psychic pressure of “The Happiest Place on Earth” finally made him snap.

  • Thiazin Red

I would watch the hell out of an American Gods spin off that was just the continuing adventures of The Zombie, the Leprechaun, and the Cabbie.

    • janecita

      Not “The Zombie,” “Dead Wife.”

      • Thiazin Red

True. And I’m really liking what they did with Laura for the show.

        • Carpe Vagenda

Yes! I’m so pleased that they went there with her being as much of an asshole as her behavior would suggest. I actually kind of grudgingly like her now.

          • MizzMazz

I think she’s just Dead. I have been re-watching Lexx, which is a show that features a re-animated corpse who interacts with people, and Laura reminds me of Kai, except she sees Shadow’s light, and wants it. Kai, the dead one on Lexx doesn’t care. But that’s just me.

          • Carpe Vagenda

But she was kind of a destructor before that. Seriously, your husband has to go to jail because you aren’t OK with being ordinary but you’re not willing to put in the effort to be something else? Please.

          • Thiazin Red

For starters I’m happy that they made her a person, which the book really didn’t.

          • Carpe Vagenda

They did. And she’s not a pleasant person, which I love. At this point she’s more real than he is, which is kind of perfect, really.

        • janecita

I didn’t like the actress, but she has grown on me.

    • Carpe Vagenda

Me too, but only if the cabbie is the only one who has sex.

      • janecita

With the Jinn as a guest star for all the sex scenes.

        • Carpe Vagenda

I know the Bilquis thing got a lot of coverage, but JMO the Jinn was way better supernatural sex.

          • janecita

I’m a straight woman, and I found it hot as hell.

          • Carpe Vagenda

Oh, me too. It was really touching, too.

    • MizzMazz

Anybody here read Tom and Lorenzo? They have nice recaps of American Gods and other shows, and even more if you like fashion and stuff. Good commenters too.

      • Carpe Vagenda

        OMG. They crossed the streams.

Are they covering it on the podcast?

        • MizzMazz

Never listened to that. Need to get my Alexa up to snuff.

          • Carpe Vagenda

You can get it on your phone, if you like. They do really good podcasts.

          • MizzMazz

I will check them out. I like podcasts when I’m cooking or cleaning.

      • Thiazin Red

Really? I read their project runway recaps, but I didn’t know they did American gods! I have something to check out tonight.

      • Suse

        I do! They are hilarious.

  • Carpe Vagenda

I have never said this before, literally, in my life, but John McEnroe, I love you.

    https://youtu.be/DdZcC07ZZx0

    • Proud Liberal

I’ve loved John McEnroe since day one, even when he was a brat. He was fun to watch. He made tennis fun!

    • UnsaltedSinner

Never name things after or build monuments to people who are still alive. There’s always a chance that they’ll make you regret it.

Too bad the craven, self serving, puerile toadies in Congress won’t ever impeach him as long as he’s useful to him. He sucks all the oxygen out of the room and draws attention away from all the horrible shit Congress is busily passing. Who cares if the country is a dumpster fire, our standing as a World powerhouse goes down the toilet as long as they get to yank the social safety net out from under the citizenry and give their overlords their tax cuts?

      • bupkus231

“… and draws attention away from all the horrible shit Congress is busily passing.”

HA! The only thing this Congress is “passing” is the same thing the last two did – gas…..

[ The “measures” they rescinded via the CRA were not accomplished via legislation , but were mere “resolutions” – they may have required a vote, but they ain’t legislation. I suppose it doesn’t matter all that much i the long run, it’s just that the idea that Legislative Branch ( under the GOP ) is actually doing the work of legislating is ludicrous ]

      • Carpe Vagenda

Think of it as an open-faced hot pocket.

    • GreenGoldSharpie

I missed that. Dude, one of the reasons to go to Chicago is for the pizza.

      • hendenburg2

That’s something I don’t understand. Why does Chicago try to play in a league that it has no business competing in, when it does something else really freakin’ well? (I’m talking about Italian Beef. It’s far better than any other city’s thinly-sliced beef sandwich).

It makes no sense. Like Michael Jordan’s attempt at pro baseball.

Chicagoans need to stop deluding themselves about their pizza-adjacent food.

    • Saxo the Grammarian

OMG, Frances Callier went on a hilarious rant about Chicago-style pizza on the Stephanie Miller show a couple of weeks ago. Executive summary:
      1. If you don’t like Chicago-style pizza, you ain’t had Chicago-style pizza.
      2. You done had a bad experience with Sbarro pizza or some other BAD pizza.
      3. Deep-dish pizza isn’t Chicago-style pizza; it’s pizza soup in a bread bowl.
      4. This show is OVER; we are flying to Chicago RIGHT NOW for some Chicago-style pizza and gettin’ this STRAIGHTENED OUT!
And Stephanie’s response was, “Now, see how the current political climate has divided us?”

      • hendenburg2

Think about it this way – there are family-owned pizzerias that serve real pizza in Chicago (for example, Vito & Nick’s in southside).

However, there are no places in New York that serve Chicago-style pizza aside from Uno

Southeast Minneapolis is an old stomping ground from my days as a college nerd. Stadium Village to the southeast, Dinkytown to the north. A lot of the businesses that gave these neighborhoods their character are gone, and I’m sure the new ones are boutiqued and spendy. But is that a bike path on the old railroad right-of-way that cuts through Dinkytown? Yes, it is! And when I zoom out, I see that it connects with other bike paths that now criss-cross the city. Cool! Next time I’m in town, I’ll have to rent a bike and do some exploring.

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

Oh, that sound divine! My Mom was from Chicago, but she made thin-crust pizza, Neapolitan-style, like it should be made. :D

          • Suse

The very best kind and so fun to make with different fresh herbs and cheeses. I could live on these.

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

:D She always grew fresh Basil and Oregano. We’d get whatever cheese, we fell in love with Goat Cheese the last year she lived with me. :)

          • hendenburg2

“How a ‘Climate Change Musical’ Became a Right-Wing Punching Bag

It had science, it had art—in other words, the Civilians’ ‘Great Immensity’ was a perfect target for conservatives. Its director, Steve Cosson, responds.

They say all press is good press. But for Steven Cosson, artistic director of documentary theatre troupe the Civilians, the reality is a bit more complicated. On May 23, The Washington Post ran a piece with the headline: “In Trump budget briefing, ‘climate change musical’ is cited as tax waste. Wait, what?”

The musical in question was The Great Immensity, created by the Civilians, which was a recipient of a $697,177 grant from the National Science Foundation. The NSF’s budget in 2017 is $7.4 billion; under President Trump’s 2018 budget proposal, the number would be cut to $6.7 billion.

In justifying the cuts, the director of Office of Management and Budget, Mick Mulvaney said the Obama administration spent too much on “crazy stuff,” giving The Great Immensity as an example. “The National Science Foundation last year used your
taxpayer money to fund a climate change musical. Do you think that’s a waste of your money?” he asked rhetorically during a press briefing last month. […]”

World Cup drama? Normal geopolitical rivalries or does it have anything to do with us tossing a lighted match in a region already known to be a powder keg? Maybe a combination of all three?

Qatar paid up to $1bn to release members of the Gulf state’s royal family who were kidnapped in Iraq while on a hunting trip, according to people involved in the hostage deal — one of the triggers behind Gulf states’ dramatic decision to cut ties with Doha.

Commanders of militant groups and government officials in the region told the Financial Times that Doha spent the money in a transaction that secured the release of 26 members of a Qatari falconry party in southern Iraq and about 50 militants captured by jihadis in Syria. By their telling, Qatar paid off two of the most frequently blacklisted forces of the Middle East in one fell swoop: an al-Qaeda affiliate fighting in Syria and Iranian security officials.

The deal, which was concluded in April, heightened concerns among Qatar’s neighbours about the small gas-rich state’s role in a region plagued by conflict and bitter rivalries. And on Monday, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain took the extraordinary step of cutting off diplomatic ties and transport links to Qatar, alleging the country fuels extremism and terrorism.

The only thing I’m sure of, is that those of us who said going into Iraq was a huge clusterfuck of a mistake waiting to happen are looking like the smart folks now. Kinda like how we said electing Trump is a huge mistake but sometimes it takes years for some people to realize, “yeah, that was a dumb decision, wasn’t it?”

Ok, so I’m assuming with all the educated Wonks around here, one of you may know this: Now we all know you shouldn’t drink whiskey if you’re freezing, makes you radiate heat. So, my reasoning is that you are supposed to drink in summer because that helps you release body heat. Somehow, this doesn’t seem to work. Why the heck not?

    • Me not sure

      Ask me when I’m sober.

    • mackafritz

I suppose it’s for the same reason. The heat goes out to your skin so you feel hotter.

Hmmm. so you’re saying I should drink cooling fluid? On it

        • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

if you mean gin and tonic with lime, than yes.

          • jowgajen

The right gin is everything. Rail gins tend to have a taste reminiscent of window cleaner. But a quality gin with botanicals you enjoy can be a revelation. Tonic, however, is gross, even the fancy shit. A nasty combo of sweet and acrid.

The quinine was drunk in tonic water, however the bitter taste was unpleasant. British officers in India in the early 19th century took to adding a mixture of water, sugar, lime and gin to the quinine in order to make the drink more palatable, thus gin and tonic was born.

          • jowgajen

So, basically water, sugar and lime weren’t enough and they put booze in it so you won’t care that it still tasted like shit.

Well, damn. This story kicked off pretty hard after I posted this comment.

        • CindyinEncinitas

DING DING DING!!1 Are you tired of all the winning yet??

  • TJ Barke

Damn, hammer dropped hard on TLM today.

    • DainBramage

Yeah, I was going to give one of my witty replies, but it wouldn’t post. I guess it’s better that way.

    • UncleTravelingMatt

Good riddance. I only liked his early stuff. Seems like he’s just been phoning it in for a while now.

      • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

the last few times i saw him, he actually would drop the act and say, “I’m done trolling, see you all in a month.”

It somehow humanized him (and made him less fun to bat around).

        • OrG

          Wasn’t that a different troll

          • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

well, others have done it, but i specifically remember TLM doing it (which doens’t mean much with my memory).

        • HazooToo

I blocked this incarnation. I have submitted to Gma and her anti-troll-trolling crusade. Oddly enough, it feels really good!

          • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

your better than me…i know i should, but i can’t help myself.

          • HazooToo

Heck, enjoy it. And congrats on response of the week on Sunday!

          • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

            Thanks!

well, TLM doesn’t usually stray into child-rape territory, does he?

      • TJ Barke

Not quite, but it’s not that far off from his usual schtick.

    • tehbaddr

Already? We were just getting warmed up!

      • CindyinEncinitas

I didn’t even get a chance to ask him out!

    • JustDon’tSayCovfefe

      Scroll up. He’s back.

  • DainBramage

So I got home and found that my garage door opener is busted. First world problem, I know. The big tension spring is broken, but I think I can replace it myself.

    • UncleTravelingMatt

Think harder. Those springs are dangerous as hell, even for people who install them regularly. I watched a guy do it himself, once. He wound up in an ambulance with a gash in his forearm clear to the bone.

      • DainBramage

Yeah, I watched a professional giving a DIY youtube video. You definitely have to take it slow and be careful winding the spring.

        • UncleTravelingMatt

Mine broke a few months ago. It cost about $100 to replace.

          • DainBramage

I’ll try to get a ballpark quote from a pro. $100 sounds pretty reasonable.

          • UncleTravelingMatt

NationServe did mine. They were willing to replace the broken one and the unbroken (but same age) spring in the other bay for $170, total.

    • Thiazin Red
    • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

Remember how much force is bound up in that rig. If you must do it manually, do it with a spotter.

    • jesterpunk

I would pay someone to replace the spring, its cheaper then a hospital bill if something goes wrong while its under pressure.

    • Juan de Fuca

      I’ll hold your beer…

      • hendenburg2

        and stand around the corner

If it’s the big wound up center spring and you do insist on doing yourself, know what you are doing, have someone else around, rake it slow, and don’t cut any corners or skip any steps.

    • Me not sure

I wouldn’t necessarily advise it, but if you’ve got your heart set on it, may I come over and watch?

      • DainBramage

You like a good blood bath?
No, I think everybody has convinced me to get a pro to do it.

    https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/06/what-trump-really-fears/528846/?utm_source=atlfb&utm_source=nl-politics-daily-060517

As the blast radius of the Russia investigation continues to expand, Donald Trump is facing an unnerving new reality: The fate of his presidency may now hinge on the motley, freewheeling crew of lieutenants and loyalists who have long populated his entourage.

    • Elvis Causticfellow

That is very reminiscent of a theory Josh Marshall advanced a while ago–that Trump may fear investigation not because he’s done anything clearly impeachable but because he genuinely may not know what crazy shit his coterie have gotten themselves into. Marshall compared it to the CIA resisting investigation into the agency’s role in the JFK assassination because they were uncertain and afraid of what might be uncovered.

  • Everrett Fanuelli

OT: But has anyone seen that Microsoft Surface commercial with the girl who makes tent jackets? It looks like she just wrapped a tent around herself. Doesn’t even look like a jacket. And where do the poles for the tent come from?

  • akryan

So the Intercept now has an article up claiming to have an NSA leaked document showing that the Russians may have actually hacked the voting machines of VRSystems, whom operate in 6 states including FL. The Intercept emphasizes that this is just raw intelligence, and they don’t know if actual tallies were manipulated, but whoa boy if it happened for real.
    https://theintercept.com/2017/06/05/top-secret-nsa-report-details-russian-hacking-effort-days-before-2016-election/

    • shivaskeeper

It wound depend on when the software was hacked and how the machines were set up. If it was rewritten before it was loaded onto the machines that would be a catastrophic failure. If it was a rewrite to one or more machines not in a network through physical media like a USB drive, it would be far far less problematic. If it ws through physical media to networked machines it would fall somewhere in the middle.

      • akryan

Yeah, that’s sort of what the article gets at, but the very fact that they were going after the voting process directly, not just propaganda stuff, takes things to a whole new level.

        • shivaskeeper

That has always been a background concern. It’s taken seriously, but there is no real way to effect a large number of machines. Here is WA, most of the counties went so far as to plug up all access ports with epoxy and similar to counter physical attempts.

The only real way to be sure is to compare the code that us supposed to be on the machines with the code that is on the machines, line by line, to see if there are any discrepancies.

        • ‘Covfefe is Magic’ Ron

Just out of curiousity, exactly when does this sort of fuckery become an ‘act of war’?

          • akryan

No idea in the age of cyber attacks. I suppose you can say that the purposeful disruption of the gov’t is as good enough an act of war as any. I guess it’s an act of war whenever we say it’s an act of war. The problem is, as the article points out, is that the beneficiaries of the cyberattack don’t ever want to admit it’s happened because it would undermine their legitimacy. The Republicans sure won’t give any credence to this.

          • CindyinEncinitas

Well it wasn’t in 2004 when they did it the first fucking time.

      • jesterpunk
        • shivaskeeper

Yeah. Most of that is easy to secure against. Turn off wi-fi and Bluetooth. Physically block up access ports. Set the machine as a stand alone outside of a network.

Older tech may not allow any of that though.

          • jesterpunk

The older voting machines are even easier to hack and you can do it with about parts you can buy for about $10 at any electronic store. The problem is there are not that many voting machine companies and none of them want anyone to actually audit their code.

          • shivaskeeper

I know. Pres Obama even mentioned that it was possible a handful of machines were hacked, as that is always is possibility, but nothing like near enough to effect the outcome.

          • jesterpunk

Voter suppression likely had a larger effect on the election then voting machine hacking but the 2 combined are enough to have a huge effect together.

          • shivaskeeper

            I agree.

  • Vincent Ricola

I give my dog an occasional Dorito because she loves it and it sounds hilarious to me when she carefully chomps it all up. I don’t care if this makes me a bad pet owner for giving her junky food, it’s not a daily thing and she’s earned it and it’s funny.

    • jowgajen

You need to find better friends than whoever is guilt tripping you for giving your dog a Dorito.

    • CindyinEncinitas

There are not many things funnier to me than the kewp kewp kewp sound a dog makes when it chews something crispy.

      • Ωbjectifier

Peanut butter on the nose is pretty good.

      • Vincent Ricola

I laugh every single time. I don’t know why, but it never fails to amuse me.

    • Thiazin Red

My boyfriend’s childhood cat liked the powder they put on them. So if you weren’t looking he would stick his head in the bag and lick all the chips. He lived to be 17 so I don’t think it hurt him too much. Thankfully, I don’t like doritos so I never got the nasty surprise of pulling out wet chips.

    • alpacapunchbowl

I used to have a kitty who was nuts for salt and vinegar pringles! I’d give her just little pieces.
Only once did I make the mistake of leaving the (closed) can out on the coffee table- when I got up the next morning and walked into the living room, there were shards of what she hadn’t yet eaten from one end of the room to another and she was rolling around in it like it was catnip.

      • BosGrl

I love you all. Nobody can stay in a bad mood long in here.

      • SadDemInTex

My present kitty adores salted tortilla chips. If he hears me crunching on them he is all over me. It is the only human food he likes besides simple cooked chicken.

        • Yeah, I had a cat who loved tortilla chips, potato chips, and saltines. I’d let her have some every once in a while. She’d eat the chips on her own, but if she wanted a cracker, I’d have to hold it while she licked all the salt off. She had a sweet tooth too, and she’d go crazy over blueberry yogurt. She was a very special kitty. I still miss her.

          • SadDemInTex

Because my fur baby is 14 he has to be on a special diet and I know that it is low salt so it is a very rare treat.

    • Everrett Fanuelli

I love hearing my dog crunch on chips.

      • shastakoala

My little Princess dog loves Cheetos. You try to raise um right but what yuh gonna do?

    • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

I had a Border Collie when I was little. We named her Tuesday, and we would give her 2 or 3 Cheetos when we had a bag. She adored them. *krunch*. :)

    • Vagenda and Pee-ara

      Video, or it didn’t happen.

My childhood dog wouldn’t touch his pancakes unless they had butter and syrup on them. Picky!

      • Thiazin Red

A picky dog sounds so weird to me based on every dog I’ve been around.

        • Vagenda and Pee-ara

He was extremely picky. He’d also take his bowl out into the yard, and turn it upside down, because he knew my mom would go out and fetch it for him. She went on a long vacation once, and my father stayed home with the dog. After the dog put his bowl out in the yard, as per usual, my father dumped the dog’s food on the patio. The next day the dog put the bowl back on the patio. He was NOT a dumb dog.

          • puredog

Also too, if you have two dogs, you can get them into competitive eating. Dog A would never eat X. Now that Puppy B is here, and will eat anything, including X, Dog A suddenly likes X. It is also a great help in feeding meds wrapped in liverwurst. Dog A would, in the past, often remove the liverwurst and spit out the pill. Now, however, after I give Puppy B a little bit of wurst, and then proffer wursted pill to Dog A, she gobbles same.

          • Vagenda and Pee-ara

I like that you’re pitting them against each other!

I had a cat that LOVED olive juice. I would spoon an olive out, and she would jump on my shoulder to drink the juice from the spoon.

I split a chip between my dogs on the reg. They love it and have come to expect it.

  • Crystalclear12
  • Apple Scruff

So, are we talking about guns now that an army vet killed 5 people, execution-style? Has 45 made a statement of outrage and “prayers”?

    • Vagenda and Pee-ara

But three men with knives and a van killed 7 people in London!!! What do you not understand about that? Sure, they would have killed a lot more people if they’d had guns, but you’re just trying to OPPRESS me, by not letting me own automatic weapons, that I need to fight the government of Obama with, because he was a dictator, who left peacefully after he’d been democratically elected by large margins. I’m aSKEERED, and also “economically anxious” but totally NOT a racist.

      • ‘Covfefe is Magic’ Ron

        Pitch-perfect. Bravo!

      • hendenburg2

Well, the same day that 7 people were killed in London, 13 people in the US were murdered with guns.

Add an extra one for the toddler who killed someone else accidentally.

        • Ωbjectifier

          The president killed somebody?

          • LucindathePook

            On Fifth Avenue.

    • Persistent Tennessee Rain

So, in recent memory, a military veteran is disoriented and wanders outside naked and ends up getting shot and killed by police. Another military vet opened fire in Dallas at a BLM rally and now, a third military vet opens fire in Florida killing 5. Let’s not even mention the domestic violence issues and suicide rates among our vets. This is obviously a very serious issue that needs to be addressed, but won’t be as long as the nutters try to solve it by puffing out their chests and proclaiming they are more patrioticker than us damned libnuts while simultaneously gutting healthcare.

    http://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/nation-world/national/article154106459.html?utm_source=nl-politics-daily-060517

A party that traditionally has had a fraught relationship with the media has become outright hostile, led by a president who picks more fights with journalists than any GOP leader since Richard Nixon.

But interviews with Republican strategists and party leaders across the country reveal that what started as genuine anger at allegedly unfair coverage — or an effort to deflect criticism — is now an integral part of next year’s congressional campaigns.

The hope, say these officials, is to convince Trump die-hards that these mid-term races are as much a referendum on the media as they are on President Trump. That means embracing conflict with local and national journalists, taking them on to show Republicans voters that they, just like the president, are battling a biased press corps out to destroy them.

    • BosGrl

OK, it’s time for President Obama to stop with the hiatus and get to work on that voting laws/gerrymandering stuff he was going to do.

I’ve asked some of the idiot Republicans I know who believe in conspiracy theories and they say “because the government pays them money to lie.” Riggggght, and it’s not like any of their papers are peer reviewed or anything. I think the problem might be that the idiots of the country have no idea how science or journalism actually works.

Out of all the publications a leaker could give a Russian hacking story to, why did they choose one that is so obviously anti-American + pro-Putin

  • Vagenda and Pee-ara

“A criminal complaint was filed in the Southern District of Georgia today charging Reality Leigh Winner, 25, a federal contractor from Augusta, Georgia, with removing classified material from a government facility and mailing it to a news outlet, in violation of 18 U.S.C. Section 793(e).”

      Ars has more on this.

      https://arstechnica.com/security/2017/06/leaked-nsa-report-says-russians-tried-to-hack-state-election-officials/

Within an hour of the story’s publication, the FBI announced the arrest
of the alleged source of the leaked report. Reality Leigh Winner was
arrested at home in Augusta, Georgia, after an NSA audit identified her
as the person who printed and removed the report from a secure facility.
The Intercept had turned over a copy of the report to the NSA to verify
its provenance while asking for comment. After analysis of the document
showed that it had been folded up, suggesting it had been printed, the
NSA determined only six employees had access to the document, and only
Winner had been in e-mail contact with The Intercept.

      • Elvis Causticfellow

Yeah. She used a work computer to contact The Intercept. UR DOING IT WRONG.

        • jesterpunk

Yes, but shouldnt they try and protect their sources too?

          • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

from what i’m hearing and reading, they noticed the picture that hte Intercept showed them was folded up, deduced it was carried out, and then off to the races.

          • jowgajen

The left (and others) did say it would be close to impossible to “hack” or “steal” the election due to multiple kinds of machines, decentralization, etc. on the other hand, as we found out, it would have only taken fuckery in a few key counties or states to win it, so we were a little wrong on that score.

      But rigged is different.

    • Claire

      We broke everything.

At least one of our two political parties is so corrupt that they no longer even care who knows it. Our alliances are in tatters and our standing in the world has cratered, which will not have any good implications for our economy. All the institutions that were supposed to protect us from a President Trump have turned out not to be able to protect us from anything. Our country is split into two factions that can’t even agree on things as basic as human rights, who gets to be an American, and the value of truth.

The problem isn’t going to go away when Trump leaves office. He’s not the problem, he’s the symptom. And I don’t think the US has the wisdom to do the kind of soul-searching and facing of hard truths that Germany did after World War II, so what’s going to happen, I don’t know.

      • jowgajen

Well, to be fair they did the soul searching after murdering millions of people in cold blood AND losing two world wars AND having their country divided into two pieces.

        • Claire

Yeah, obviously it’s not an exact comparison. But Germany went a lot farther down than we are now and they came back from it, not just financially and politically but morally. That wasn’t a preordained outcome; it wouldn’t have happened no matter what misery they’d inflicted on themselves if they hadn’t had the courage to face what they’d become head-on. Half of America won’t even face reality head-on, let alone their own shortcomings.

Regarding Reality Winner being arrested: it’s what happens if you get caught leaking or taking sensitive information. That is something that is gone over with you before you voluntarily sign an NDA. Anyone coming out and leaking is facing the same dilemma right now. They are risking their careers, and federal convictions and prison sentences if they are caught as well.

There may be mitigating circumstances, but that needs to be found out during the investigation.

A federal contractor in the U.S. state of Georgia has been arrested and charged after she admitted sending a classified report to an online news outlet. The arrest is believed to be linked to a story from The Intercept news website.

The document published by The Intercept claims Russian military intelligence executed a cyberattack on at least one U.S. voting software supplier and sent spear-phishing emails to more than 100 local election officials just days before last year’s presidential election.]

It was a direct attack on the voting systems themselves and confirmation about Russian interference. No more “….maybe the Chinese. Nobody knows.”

      • Bill D. Burger

I couldn’t agree more! Intercept has a sketchy rep. They were the platform for Snowden, and they “try hard” to be hard hitting and fair, but their methodology is amateurish at time.

    • memzilla Ω

This exposes NSA methodology to the GRU Hacking Team and is quite useful to not get caught next time. Reality Winner was arrested by the FBI the same day the docs were leaked to Greenwald. GRU thus embarrasses NSA, throws shade at the upcoming Comey hearing, and stirs the whole “who can I believe” pot. Not a win for us, or for transparency.

    • akryan

I’ll wait until it gets confirmed by a few more outlets, but I’d be surprised if it wasn’t true. Even if it was just an attempt to hack the vote that didn’t ultimately work, the fact that they were even trying to directly effect the election, above and beyond mere propaganda, makes this a totally different ball game.

  • Thiazin Red

What would happen if it was found that the vote totals were compromised? Could the results be reversed? Is there any existing legal precedent?

    • jowgajen

Probably not. The election is the means by which the states choose their electors. Once the electors are chosen and seated, it’s a done deal.

      • LucindathePook

Can we at least put a little asterisk next to Drumpf’s name, like with Roger Maris?

        • Persistent Demme

I have one in my mind already, but I’ll bet it doesn’t count.

      • tomamitai

The Constitution doesn’t even require that the states hold elections to choose the electors. Another reason to be concerned about how many state legislatures are controlled by republicans.

        • jowgajen

Every state passed laws for direct elections of electors in the 70s.

          • tomamitai

They can unpass them, too. The Wikipedia article I linked to says that “…Legislative appointment was brandished as a possibility in the 2000 election. Had the recount continued, the Florida legislature was prepared to appoint the Republican slate of electors to avoid missing the federal safe-harbor deadline for choosing electors”.

    • WomanInThePersistence

My gut feeling is no. Because the people who actually elect the president are the electoral college.

    • jesterpunk

Nope, its not something the founders thought would be a problem and we have no real way to redo an election for POTUS. Every other position can be recalled depending on the states though.

    • ariel_gee_398

Who knows, no and no. I suspect if there were proof, there would be litigation alleging that equal protection rights of individuals in states that were tampered with were violated. But there’s absolutely no precedent for undoing the results or calling a do-over.

      • Meccalopolis

        Impeachment is the mechanism

        • ariel_gee_398

No it’s not. Impeachment goes down the chain of succession within the existing administration/government. It does nothing to remedy the actual wrong and put the “loser” of a theoretically stolen election into power.

          • Claire

Which is a strangely monarchist way of setting things up, when you think about it – kill the king and you get his idiot brother, or his ten-year-old son, or his third cousin four countries over, but there’s no way short of bloody revolution to remove the entire family.

          • ariel_gee_398

Well, as originally envisioned, the Vice-President was the loser in the election. So the loser, presumably a political rival, would take over. We changed that so President and VP were one ticket (which made it much more likely the would work together). But we never thought about what we’d do if the whole government was corrupt as fuck.

          • Claire

I didn’t know that about the VP. That’s a great idea in theory, though I feel like over time it would lead to a lot of presidents needing food tasters.

          • ariel_gee_398

That’s how Thomas Jefferson got to be Adams’ VP, even though they ran against each other. Shit got real fucked up in the next election, in 1800, when Jefferson thought he had it rigged so that he’d get the most electors and his running mate Aaron Burr would get one fewer elector, so he could be VP. But someone forgot not to vote and the ended up tied in electoral votes so it got tossed to the House.

We fixed it before the next election and specified that electors would vote separately for President and Vice-President, so that kind of thing would never happen again.

          • Meccalopolis

      • Three Finger Salute

“What were the people who created this system thinking?”

To do everything different from Britain. We don’t have anything like Canada or the UK where the president (like the PM) can “call an election” or the entire parliament can be dissolved by no confidence vote. Minority governments tend to just be stalemates. We don’t have coalition governments because we don’t have multiple parties. The system was intended to be as stubborn and ossified as possible.

        • LucindathePook

Oddly, I doubt they could even imagine “Russian hacking”. Remember they blessed us with the fucking 2nd Amendment. In a world with only black-powder rifles, it might have made a tiny bit of sense. In a world with automatic weapons, not so much.

      • Claire

I think they thought they’d put in enough safeguards against invalid election results that the issue wouldn’t come up – which, in fairness, it hasn’t until now. But for whatever reason they apparently didn’t envision all those safeguards rotting away, so they didn’t include a doomsday switch.

I still don’t think they’ll find any solid evidence linking Trump directly to Russia, so if there’s to be impeachment, I recon it will have to be for obstruction of justice. On the plus side, we already know he’s done that, because he told us. On he negative side, Republicans don’t care.

On top of all this Twitter madness, Politico’s Susan Glasser reported
that Trump blindsided his secretary of state, defense secretary and
national security adviser, who had made sure that his speech to NATO
reaffirmed the alliance’s collective-defense clause. Trump removed the
language — the cornerstone of the military alliance — at the last minute
    without even telling the advisers.

        • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

I don’t have the $$ to get it right now, but I will get one when I can.

I doubt we will ever have another Presidential Election in this benighted nation, and I also doubt humanity will survive the next 50 years. There is zero reason not to do what I want.

        • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

          • Jennifer R

I mauled the same pre molar twice sadly. Once right when I got it and once when the threads wore out of the nylon bells and I went back to full time metal.

        • MynameisBlarney

I had a gf that had a truly wicked tongue piercing she used to torture me with when she gave me head. It was silicone or something, and had little spiky things all over it. I begged her to stop using it. But she did’nae listen.

          • Jennifer R

I do admit I like listening to squirming. Better use a safeword if you want it to stop.

          • MynameisBlarney

            LOL

With her, I don’t think a safeword would have worked.

          • Jennifer R

That’s crap. Consent is the cornerstone of healthy relationships.

          • MynameisBlarney

Indeed, but she was a force of nature.
And besides, we had never talked about safewords and such. We didn’t know about that sort of thing. We were learning about one another. I tortured her with oral sex in my own ways. So, I give her a pass.
Anyway, it was the good kind of torture. If you get my meaning.
I showed her the dominant side of herself she never knew she had.
And I let her work it out on me.

Her new husband must be very happy.

Good report in Slate on the NSA leak directly linking the Russians to the election hacks.

[Leaked NSA Report Says Russian Hackers Targeted Voter Registration Officials in November 2016

    By Ben Mathis-Lilley

    • The Intercept says it’s obtained and verified the authenticity of an internal NSA report about a Russian hacking attack. CBS says it’s also confirmedthat the report is authentic.
    • The report is a summary of conclusions and does not include “raw” intelligence data. It concludes that an attack against U.S. voter registration systems, was conducted last year by GRU, a Russian military intelligence agency.
    • The effort began with an apparently successful August attempt to infiltrate the network of a voter registration services company that The Interceptidentifies as Florida-based VR Systems.
    • The hackers then used pilfered credentials to send emails which appeared as if they came from VR Systems to 122 local voting officials around the country. This portion of the attack was launched “on either October 31 or November 1.”
    • These emails included attachments that, if opened, triggered the installation of software that would allow the hackers to access the officials’ computers.]
    http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2017/06/05/russian_hackers_targeted_voter_registration_officials_nsa_report_says.html

I feel for the young lady who has been arrested for the leak, but I thank her as well. Trump and his GOP enablers can no longer deny the direct Russian hack and the still unfolding interference they perpetrated on the election and its outcome.
We really need an 9/11-style commission on the hacking, and not simply for the sake of going after anyone who may have colluded, but just so that this doesn’t happen again.
The Republicans are all but useless and will continue to try to run interference for Trump/Putin for as long as it helps their own odious agenda.
It’s always party over country for them.

So let me get this straight. We have…

A zombie botnet launched on Halloween… by the Rat King of Sovietstan.

A kayfabe pro-wrestler president and likely Moscow operative who wants to build a wall… just like in a Tetris game.

A dead-eyed sociopath who looks like Damien, who owns a haunted hotel at the address of 666 Fifth Avenue.

A glowing orb in the desert of the world’s #1 exporter of terrorist blood massacres.

A slimy Newt and a flaxen-haired witch in the Vatican.

And the only hopes for humanity are the leaders of the former WW2 Axis Powers… and the Jedi prince of Disneyland North.

Illuminati confirmed? Maybe not… In fact, I’m beginning to think this whole thing has just been one big cinematic experiment in the making. Trump isn’t really president. We never had an election. We got punked into voting for American Idol!

And it was probably a prank from Kim Jong Un, getting revenge on Hollywood for making an awful movie about him — by making an even worse movie about us! The Howard Hughes of the Pacific. Gee, all he wanted to do was be a movie director. Maybe we shoulda been a little nicer to the guy…

Saudi Arabia reportedly spent more than a quarter of a million dollars at President Trump’s Washington hotel as part of their lobbying efforts against a controversial terrorism-related law.

The kingdom hired lobbyists and consultants to push back against the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA), which would allow U.S. citizens to sue other governments for terrorist attacks, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

Those hired individuals then spent about $190,000 on lodging, $78,000 on catering as well as $1,600 on parking at the Trump-owned luxury hotel, The Daily Caller first reported.

MSLGroup, a public relations firm, disclosed the kingdom’s payments last week while filing the foreign lobbying paperwork with the Justice Department.

    Fuck Trump!
“On Monday, Trump argued that public-sector red tape and inefficiency were responsible for the FAA’s backwardness. Thus, the president proposed outsourcing air traffic control to a “self-financing, nonprofit organization” that would be funded via user fees, instead of taxes.

The government would still regulate this private company for safety purposes, and over 30,000 FAA employees would retain their jobs, union, and “similar” benefits after being reassigned to the quasi-private sector.

The proposal enjoys strong support from the major airlines. In reporter David Dayen’s view, that fact is a testament to the measure’s flaws:

The plan did not originate with Trump. It actually comes from the airline industry, and its biggest champion in Congress, House Transportation Committee chair Bill Shuster, is literally sleeping with an airline industry lobbyist. It’s no worry because the lobbyist “doesn’t lobby my office,” Shuster reassured reporters in 2015. I would think she doesn’t need to.

… You can also see the influence of the airline industry in how the new system would be funded. Gone would be taxes on airline passengers. In their place would be fees on aircraft … The Big Four airlines have more ability to absorb these costs than start-up competitors or regional carriers that serve smaller cities. Lifting passenger fees would simply give the dominant carriers more legroom (unlike their passengers) to increase their own fees, either through higher fares or endless add-ons for another inch of space or a snack box or carry-on baggage or a pillow. Delta, actually an opponent of privatization, confirmed this in a study last year, showing that travelers would pay 20-29 percent higher costs if the U.S. shifted air traffic control from the FAA. And because of the Big Four’s extreme volume, they can pass on user fee costs in a way the competition cannot.
    Regardless, Democrats are unenthused. ”

    Yeah, fuck Trump twice.

    4. Trump tweets again, undercutting the DOJ’s argument to SCOTUS to allow his ban to go into effect.

    5. Trump’s minions can’t agree on whether Trump tweets should be taken at face value.

    6. Trump launches an initiative to privatize air traffic control (seemingly forgetting the fuckups of 911 are what led to the de-privatization of airport security and it just genuinely being a bad idea).

At this point, it becomes impossible to have any real idea of what will happen. DT has seemed increasingly thuggish and nutty (not really a winning combination). But his ignorance has gotten him through everything else. I don’t see the cult leaving him, and don’t see most of the GOP having the nerve to stand up to him. Those tax cuts for the billionaires must be incredibly attractive.

Now hear me out; I don’t use the
“D-word” lightly. The fact is, Mr. Assange is no ordinary hacker,
fleecing little old ladies or snatching R&D from Microsoft. He is a
nefarious actor on the world stage. His disclosures have directly aided
and abetted America’s international adversaries from Russia to ISIS, and
his leaks have unquestionably made Americans and many others less safe
around the world. Assange’s actions are not hacking, they are
cyberterrorism — and they should be dealt with thusly.

Assange should be given an ultimatum, say 48 hours, to surrender to British authorities, or face a drone strike.

      The Beleaguered Tenants of ‘Kushnerville’
Tenants in more than a dozen Baltimore-area rental complexes complain about a property owner who they say leaves their homes in disrepair, humiliates late-paying renters and often sues them when they try to move out. Few of them know that their landlord is the president’s son-in-law.

Here Are the Financial Disclosures of 349 Officials Trump Has Installed Across the Government

Here’s an example of something we’ve found: The financial disclosures of Acting Under Secretary of Education James Manning show he previously consulted for USA Funds, an organization that was once the nation’s largest student loan guarantor.

In 2015, USA Funds sued the Education Department after the government instituted a rule limiting some fees guaranty agencies charge struggling borrowers. In March, two months after Manning joined the administration, the department rescinded the rule. USA Funds, which recently changed its name to Strada Education Network, dropped the case less than a week later.

Manning received $110,000 from USA Funds for consulting on issues related to the federal student loan program and higher education data analytics, according to his disclosure form. The form doesn’t say when Manning worked with the organization, but it shows he was a consultant from January 2015 to January 2017.

A department spokeswoman told ProPublica that Manning had recused himself from all matters involving his old employer. “Jim has not been involved in any discussions or decisions made at the department that have or will effect that company,” said spokeswoman Elizabeth Hill, adding that Manning “is a tremendous asset to the department.”

Manning did not respond to an email request for comment.

A spokesman for Strada Education Network said Manning had no involvement with the USA Funds lawsuit, and said his role at the department posed no conflict. “He served as a consultant on general higher education policy issues, and his consultancy ended before he was appointed to his current role at the Department earlier this year,” said Strada’s Robert Murray.

    • TJ Barke

I believe the total invasion force was something like 100,000 men, and about 4000 bought it on D-day. Of course, technically tomorrow is the anniversary.

      • UncleTravelingMatt

Those guys in the picture were landing right about now. Except in Mountain Time, where they landed a week from three minutes from now.

      • Cat Cafe Honors Paris Accord

Some of them died in such sad ways, too. The landing craft couldn’t get close enough, so had to stop in deeper water, and when they jumped off, their equipment was so heavy it dragged them underwater and they drowned. We only succeeded by the narrowest margins–really, mostly because Hitler was so insane (keeping his Panzers on the Eastern Front, refusing to even entertain the idea of a landing NOT at Calais, letting Rommel come back to Berlin for his wife’s birthday). It’s such an amazing story! I’ve read a bunch of books about it and even have visited the landing beaches in Normandy, which are such an eerie memorial (like the scene in Patton where he can “feel” the battle from thousands of years ago). You really need a strange trumpet playing in the background. I still actually like the book “The Longest Day,” best–such an amazing gathering together of first-person accounts from so many different people, so many odd little details. I like the movie too, because I’m simple that way.

        • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

I enjoy Ryan’s “The Longest Day” as well. Beevor’s “D-Day” is the new classic one volume history of the campaign. I have Keegan’s “Six Armies in Normandy” on my wish list.

If Rommel had been allowed to station the SS Panzer Korps where he wanted to, things would have been very bad.

          • Cat Cafe Honors Paris Accord

Yes, exactly! The generals were skillful enough to prevent the invasion–thank God Hitler was that crazy. Craziness does destroy itself eventually–the only question (that I ask myself every day) is how long it takes. I’ll go check out the books you recommend! Thanks! Are you interested in “rise of Hitler” everyday-life kinds of books? “Berlin Diary” was really interesting–the texture of life, but written by such an acute observer. I read it years ago. It would probably be truly horrifying to read it now….

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

Oh, you’re quite welcome. :) I would be interested, thank you. I’ll put that title on my wish list.

Oh another title I can recommend is “Surrender Invites Death”, which is about the SS Panzer Korps vs, the British in Normandy.

          • UncleTravelingMatt

Hindsight, and all that, but I think the idea that “if only Rommel had . . .” arises from equal parts Rommel mythology and over-rating the effectiveness of late-war Panzer formations. I heard an Army lecturer once who argued that German armor would not have made an appreciable difference for two reasons: (1) the inland flooding that created such havoc for the paratroopers would have created even more trouble for tanks and (2) the air landings created such confusion that the tanks likely would have been running all over the countryside chasing ghosts, burning fuel, and only finding scattered pockets of light infantry.

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

A closer deployment would have avoided the attrition the Panzers suffered from Allied air attacks. Remember how much damage the SS did to the British as it was. Wittmann knocked British 7th Armored Division out of action for days with 5 Tiger 1s and a company of Mark IVs from Panzer Lehr.

          • UncleTravelingMatt

All true, although they (particularly the Tigers) would have presumably been less successful as mobile platforms trying to break up infantry movements than sniping Shermans and British cruisers from prepared hull-down positions in the bocage.

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

True. I just wonder at what full or nearer full-strength SS Panzer & Panzer Grenadier formations would have done. It’s not so much that they would have pushed the Allies back into the sea, as what would casualty rates have become?

I know a lot of people give Montogomery stick over not being aggressive, but I think he had genuine concerns over the British morale and manpower situation. That’s why I want to read “Six Armies” and “Operation Goodwood”. Beevor’s “D-Day” opened my eyes to some of the challenges Monty was facing that I had previously been ignorant of.

    • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

D Minus 1. US 101st and 82nd Airborne, and British 6th Airborne open Operation Overlord with airdrops and Glider landings in France.

    • Anna Elizabeth, Tank Grrl

D-Day casualties for the airborne divisions were calculated in August 1944 as 1,240 for the 101st Airborne Division and 1,259 for the 82nd Airborne. Of those, the 101st suffered 182 killed, 557 wounded, and 501 missing. For the 82nd, the total was 156 killed, 347 wounded, and 756 missing.

  • MynameisBlarney

    So…
This morning, there was a rig parked at the shop when I pulled up. I figured it was someone needing a place to park and sleep off a long drive.
Thinking nothing of it, I opened up the shop, made coffee, fired up the PC’s and took a BC powder to wake up.
About 20 minutes later a man a woman walked in and asked me if I could help them get a coolant hose for their Volvo.
Not being quite awake yet I said “We’re not Volvo dealers anymore, but I’ll see what I can do.”
They said it was outside and asked if I could take a look. “Sure.” I said.
I followed them outside and they walked over to the rig. It was a Volvo. With a Detroit Diesel in it.
    WTF?
I told them I couldn’t really help them as we weren’t Volvo dealers anymore and hadn’t touched a Detroit in 20 years.
I suggested he try the garage a couple of blocks away as they were more familiar with automotive shit than I was, but to come back if they couldn’t help him.
About a half hour later they were back.

No luck, they went to two other shops and were turned away.

We went back out to look at this infernal coolant hose and I saw it was a blue silicone hose, which we have in stock, but it looked like it might be a step hose…which means one end is bigger than the other.
I told him this might be a dealer item, but he should remove it and bring it in and we’ll see if we can match it up anyway.

About an hour later, he brought it in, we measured it. I checked inventory and saw we had it.
We cut it to length, I ordered coolant and better hose clamps from NAPA than that cheap ass factory shit.
He and his wife were there ’til midday and got it running.

They even captured the coolant and poured it our barrels for recycling.
I ended up making two new friends AND got a 50 dollar tip on top.
I invited them to lunch but they had to haul ass to Key West.

    • Left Coast Tom

I’m trying to figure out how privatizing ATC will help with the main cause of delays I face, which is the fact that frequent fog at SFO means pilots can’t land parallel when the runways are only 750 ft. apart. I’m not entirely sure I want to know the answer.

          • tomamitai

And pay the extra carry-on fee?

      • Zippy W Pinhead

The solution is to upgrade the gear to eliminate depending upon ground based radar. The point of privatization has nothing to do with efficiency though, it’s just a way to bleed the coffers of the US Treasury

        • Left Coast Tom

Oh, in the end I’m sure the only solution is technology. The airport is built on landfill, and for a wide variety of reasons expanding the fill in order to widen the separation is a non-starter, and the Bay Area lacks the unbuilt flat ground required to move the airport as Denver did.

As most of us understand and L’il Donnie doesn’t, ATC is a public utility. As a passenger, I can’t decide that I’m unhappy with ATC and demand the pilot put his landing out to bid.

          • Juan de Fuca

That and landing a plane relies on good old fashioned ground-based radio wave propagation, via the VORTAC and ILS. The ILS primarily for landing an approaching plane. I only believe this because my first job (AFSC) in the USAF was NavAids and my first job post USAF retirement was with the FAA in Palmdale, CA., before I finally found a job a lot closer to Temecula – like one that is 10 minutes away compared to 2 hours, but I digress.

The GPS vs. legacy NavAids debate has been going on for years. In the end, GPS probably won’t help too much when it comes to landing planes at SFO, when visual flight rules are rarely in effect.

          • Left Coast Tom

Would DGPS be a factor here? Ships use it as they require much closer accuracy than GPS can reliably provide (and GPS w/ fixed ground stations has been able to track ground compression/expansion caused by Sierra snow fall/melt).

          • Juan de Fuca

I think so. I’m not pro or con GPS and GPS certainly has its own benefits. Legacy navaids are just that – legacy. They’re old technology but work great when it comes to landing planes in otherwise tight spots. I believe ships use certain versions of the VORTAC or TACAN that I’m used to working on, in order to aim them close to port or at least keep them on a specific path out in open water.

GPS is a great technology and I hope we keep incorporating it into navaids (you weren’t the first to think of this, Donny), as long we remember it’s satellite based. I also worked at a solar observatory during my time in the USAF and sun spots are a real thing when it comes to affecting GPS. Not trying to go all, Alex Jones – just saying those sun spots are real, man.

        • There’s no public utility that we can’t grift from!

        • Three Finger Salute

Privatization is only going to make a potentially deadly mess. The “free market sector” has no qualms about working employees to the point of near-fatal exhaustion. That’s a pretty bad thing on its own, but bigly worse if the employees you’re going to be working to the bone are responsible for, oh, I dunno, thousands of people in thousands-of-pounds of aircraft flying at thousands of miles an hour thousands of miles above the ground.

There was a movie some years back called Pushing Tin, starring John Cusack and Billy-Bob Thornton (and Angelina Jolie, I think this is where they had their infamous fling), about the bad things that happen when air traffic controllers get really stressed out. No plane crashes, but enough tension on staff to cause near-disasters. Adding sleep deprivation to the list of things they have to worry about is only going to Make Air Travel Hell Again.

What is it with goopers and ATCs? Reagan was a union buster who had no qualms about firing them when they tried to organize and strike for better working conditions. Now Trump is privatizing the whole goddamn thing? Fail, yuge fail.

          • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

not to mention plenty of cost/corner cutting.

Trump apparently said ATC needed to be modernized…that’s not going ot happen, well, not well anyhow.

          • Juan de Fuca

Fun fact – when I worked at an enroute radar facility for the FAA, I found out that many of the union employees Reagan fired got rehired after he left office. Some of whom retired from my own facility a few years before I got hired.

So in the end, they outlasted Ronnie.

          • Left Coast Tom

This reminded me that Oakland ATC is, actually, located here in Fremont, CA. Which reminded me that ATC is far more than “how do you land a plane”.

Oakland ATC manages airspace far out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean, by area it’s simply enormous. I’m guessing L’il Donnie doesn’t actually know what ATC does?

          • Juan de Fuca

Yup! The enroute facility I worked at in Palmdale coordinated with Oakland’s ATC and a few others. It’s really an amazing field when you think about it.

You wouldn’t want to know some of the people in charge of maintaining those systems, but the technology is very cool.

*I kid, I kid. I still fly and I worked with ’em.

At any given minute of the day, there are on average 7,000 planes in the sky (including passenger, cargo and small private planes). That’s a lot of tin to push.

We should probably privatize airport firefighters and the Civil Air Patrol while we’re at it.

They’re gone. I hate to say it, but the fact that, as a population, they’re drug addled, sick, and unemployed isn’t a coincidence.

Scares me, but I agree with a conservative like J.D. Vance. It’s sooooo self inflicted.

          • Not all of it. Much is nurture, peer pressure and not being strong enough to break away.

        • HorseChestnut

Hell yes, you get that shit in those corners. There are plenty of racists (misogynists, etc.) at Harvard, both students and faculty. They aren’t as loud, but they do a lot more damage in the long run.

    • shivaskeeper

I’m of two minds about this one. If it’s current stuff, sure, report it. If the employer doesn’t want to do anything about it, that’s their issue and you can deal with the employer as you deem fit. If it’s a old post? Not so much.

Using an old post to do that is something akin to firing a teacher for some pictures taken on spring break years ago. The potential for abuse is large with an idea like this.

      • GreenGoldSharpie

Nah, I only report current convos.

Sadly, it’s less so since I added an actual picture of myself to FB and not my rock chick here.

I feel less confident engaging for fear of being shit on. That’s intentional, though. I stay out of trouble on FB. :-D

          I understand.

I still can’t believe she picked Minneapolis over St. Paul. And I really like the Twin Cities, btw.

I took this picture in December 2014. Yes, that is MTM and the statue is located at 7th and Nicollet, across the street from where she threw her hat. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/dd756312534160b3afb7bcce7d4d791c7f209c93e564481814798c938962dce5.jpg

I remember the first time I saw that – me and the family laughed until we had tears in our eyes.

That one, and the Remington Steele version, and the St Elsewhere version, and the St Elsewhere series finale…

      • WomanInThePersistence

I love that statue. True story, when I was in college in St. Paul, my brother, who was visiting from Oregon, and I were on a bus to Minneapolis. Behind us were two elderly ladies. One of them distinctly said, “Of course, I use Minneapolis, but I could NEVER live there.”

Bro and I still crack each other up with that line.

        • Saxo the Grammarian

Ha! I remember how scandalized my extended family was when we moved from Minneapolis to St. Paul. My mom was, like, “how will I ever get to visit you?”

    • Toomush_Inferesistance

Toomush Juniette lives in St. Paul. SHE IS A SCIENTIST AND MAY BE THERE!….

      • WomanInThePersistence

St Paul is the Best. Minneapolis, not so much.

Reality hits Leigh and she is a Winner!!!!!!

    • Jeff! Did you finally join the monks?

      • Jeffocaster in the East

Nooooooo………but I am in Virginia drinking wine.

        • As one does in the Virginia ^.^
We were at a winery on Sunday. Granted, it was because the Renn faire was also there, but there was wine to be had!

          • Jeffocaster in the East

Not the Renn Faire!!!!! Did you dress as Maid Marion?

          • oh hell no. But oldest did wear a cape, and have me buy him a hat.
If I was gonna dress up I would go as Prostilina, the …er..courtesan.

Anybody else think, based on very superficial evidence, that Reality Winner is very young, fairly naive, and thought she was doing something important for her country? And might be right about that?

Also, what on earth is wrong with her parents, giving her that name?

    • Three Finger Salute

Her parents are Moon Unit Zappa and Zowie Bowie?

      • Kateaux

Unsurprisingly, Zowie Bowie goes by Duncan Jones these days.

        • Three Finger Salute

At least he didn’t change his own name to Hines. Or Donut.

    • young possibly, naive, probably not so much, I am leaning toward duped since that seems to be the pattern thus far

    • LadyLaz

Yeah. Some one was stoned. I was on magnesium sulfate after giving birth which made me loopy. Second ended up with an odd name….

      • My oldest has two legal first names because I was drugged, tired, out of it, and the spaces were weird on the form.

        • Jamoche

I have a double first name on purpose. I’ve left a swath of redesigned name-handling software every place I’ve worked.

    • Jennifer R

Her twitter says her name is Sara.

      • WomanInThePersistence

I worked with a guy who said his name was “normal male name”. Later I found out he had started life with the name “Starstorm”. Can’t blame him a bit.

Did I mention that I grew up in Oregon?

        • Three Finger Salute

All the kids named Bella and Edward, then Anastasia and Christian are probably going to be pissed when they find out why.

Not to mention the epidemic of “Daenerys”-es.

          • Ford Prefect is a perfectly good name for a babby baker.

Only if they are from Betelgeuse. And have annoying non-blinking habits. On the bright side, they would always know where their towel was.

          • I nicknamed him Ix when he was young. But he’s out grown it

          • therblig

            so, he’s no longer 9?

          • Three Finger Salute

Always wondered how many kids were named after the place they were conceived… and turned out to be named Studebaker.
