GON FUCK TRUMP UP

WHOA HEY, it’s early evening on the East Coast, which means a new #ExplosiveReport has come out in a big newspaper that will effectively hijack everything the Failing and Sad Trump regime wants to do tomorrow. The Washington Post New York Times (good job, NYT, you gitted one!) broke the story, and it is that former FBI Director James Comey is a motherfucking beast who left a motherfucking paper trail on everything Donald Trump ever did that bothered him, and the first leaky leaky out of that batch is a memo Comey wrote just after Trump tried to pressure him into shutting down the FBI investigation into disgraced and fired former national security adviser/LITERAL ACTUAL FOREIGN AGENT Michael Flynn:

President Trump asked the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, to shut down the federal investigation into Mr. Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, in an Oval Office meeting in February, according to a memo Mr. Comey wrote shortly after the meeting.

“I hope you can let this go,” the president told Mr. Comey, according to the memo.

The existence of Mr. Trump’s request is the clearest evidence that the president has tried to directly influence the Justice Department and F.B.I. investigation into links between Mr. Trump’s associates and Russia.

Mr. Comey wrote the memo detailing his conversation with the president immediately after the meeting, which took place the day after Mr. Flynn resigned, according to two people who read the memo. The memo was part of a paper trail Mr. Comey created documenting what he perceived as the president’s improper efforts to influence a continuing investigation.

According to the NYT (again, you guys, good job!) Comey was at the White House that day for an unrelated meeting, and VP Mike Pence and AG Jeff Sessions were both there too, but Trump made them leave the Oval Office before he tried to grab Comey by the pussy and take him furniture-shopping about the Flynn investigation:

Alone in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump began the discussion by condemning leaks to the news media, saying that Mr. Comey should consider putting reporters in prison for publishing classified information, according to one of Mr. Comey’s associates.

Mr. Trump then turned the discussion to Mr. Flynn.

WHOA. IF. TRUE. (It’s totally true.) We are of course not surprised that Trump would want to put reporters in prison for revealing classified information about how Trump is probably a Russian intelligence asset and a criminal, but we think it’s pretty LOL considering Trump’s cavalier attitude about revealing classified intelligence from the Israelis to his BFF Russia, which happens to be America’s oldest enemy.

To be clear, this is a different meeting from when Trump tried to move on Comey like a bitch but couldn’t get there, by begging Comey to pledge his loyalty. First of all, they had dinner during that meeting, but in this instance it doesn’t even sound like Trump offered to press his funny red button and order Comey a Diet Coke, because Donald Trump is a classless fuck-strumpet. Also, the dinner meeting happened in January, whereas this happened on Valentine’s Day, and apparently this memo (and probably many others!) is Comey’s love Valentine to Trump, for being suuuuuuuuch a shitty lover.

Everybody is on TV acting like “WHOA THIS IS BIG but we want to see the actual memo,” and Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Richard Burr wants to see it too, so we reckon the Deep State is currently at its local FedEx or UPS store, making copies for literally every person on the entire planet. Because come the fuck on, you TV idiots, you know the memos exist. (GRETA and ALAN DERSHOWITZ, we are LOOKING AT YOUR FACES are on our TV right now, and you are BOTHERING US with your STUPID WORDS about how we GOTTA SEE THE MEMO.)

Speaking of Comey keeping memos of basically everything, here is a thing from Matt Miller, formerly of the Justice Department, who used to work with Comey:

The New York Times has a little bit more context on that too:

Mr. Comey created similar memos — including some that are classified — about every phone call and meeting he had with the president, the two people said. It is unclear whether Mr. Comey told the Justice Department about the conversation or his memos. […]

Mr. Comey was known among his closest advisers to document conversations that he believed would later be called into question, according to two former confidants, who said Mr. Comey was uncomfortable at times with his relationship with Mr. Trump.

Reportedly he has done this for YEARS, and not just with Trump, so yeah, the memos are out there. The NYT reports that Comey specifically shared his Trump memos with a close circle of high up FBI people, just so they would know how Trump was trying his damnedest to obstruct justice. Everybody will probably see them shortly, BE PATIENT. :)

On that note, look which Republican jizz-weasel seems to want to do his job all of a sudden for some reason:

Maybe his mangled hind paw is feeling all better now and he has a new lease on life, now that his foot surgery is over.

Anyhow, our theory of James Comey being a good guy comes more true every day! We literally CAN’T WAIT for the next OMG revelation, which will probably come out after dinner.

With the latest revelation – that President Trump straight up asked James Comey to end the Flynn investigation – this is starting to feel like a prize fight where one boxer just took three straight punches to the head. It’s hard to know how much longer this can go on. But I suspect the answer is this: a lot longer.

We talk a lot about smoke and fire. But this isn’t smoke. This is the fire. It’s not clear to me what more we need to know. The only question is whether we decide to put it out or just let it keep burning. As I said above, I bet we’re going to let it burn for quite a while longer.

*sigh* Oh, FFS. If we were in an ideal situation, it would be possible to put up an open thread and be sure it would be the last one of the night. Does that make it easier to get what I’m saying?

It’s like Comey is Andy Dufresne, and he just escaped from the prison that is this administration.

I bet you Flynn cries like a bitch when US Marshals show up.

    • Serai 1

      Except Andy never killed anybody.

      • Raan

True. All he did was get drunk on (I assume) scotch and throw his gun in the river.

  • IOnlyLikeCats

Now Comey is the only person with the power trying to thwart a fascist and I have to forgive him. Rude.

    • Serai 1

          • Sophia

Speaking of jewelry that reminds me. Also a foreshadowing of his “throw them under the bus” technique

            The Empty Jewelry Box Scam

Back in 1986 and likely for many years before, Donald Trump colluded in tax evasion with Bulgari Jewelry Store in New York, a high-end posh location with tony clientele right out of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Here’s how the scam worked:

Trump would go into the store with his wife, his girlfriend, his…whatever (to use his vernacular). He would then buy her an expensive necklace or wristwatch. Normally, such a transaction would face the New York city and state sales tax, which would be pretty high on luxury jewelry.

In an illegal attempt to evade the tax, Trump “asked” the store to instead ship the jewelry to an out of state location, where no New York sales tax could be collected. In fact, the store would merely send an empty jewelry box to the location, while Trump and his lady friends walked out the door with the jewelry that very day.

The state and city tax collectors eventually caught onto this scheme, and Trump promptly testified against his erstwhile tax evasion colluding partners at the jewelry store in order to save his own skin.

Memorandum Of/For Record. Those things can be a lifesaver if it looks like you ate being set up to take a fall or just some not technically illegal, but shady shit nonetheless, is happening around you.

Unlike a diary or journal, a memo line that is an official document.

    • RobespierreHoo

Hmmm, an “official document”. Hope Jim Comey had the foresight to spring for the $2.95 and mail it to himself CERTIFIED.

      • shivaskeeper

Memos of record are official, as in can be used as evidence. Journal entries or personal diaries, maybe not so much.

Question for the Wonketariat: where did I read that survey that said that over 50% of Trump supporters believe that Comey was fired because of Hillary’s emailz, even after Trump said straight out that he was fired over the Russia investigation?

    • Joe Beese
      • Sophia

        Where?

  • An enlightened nation would call for new elections. Until then, let justice enlighten the nation.

    • IOnlyLikeCats

I seriously do want new elections.

    • Yr. Gma

The problem is that we have to follow the Constitution or ratify a new amendment. New elections would be great, but the Constitution already provides for removing a president and the succession.

      • Claire

I honestly think there’s going to have to be a ratification of the Constitution after this. The processes outlined in it have covered abnormal situations for 200-odd years, but they don’t have provisions for invalid elections or situations like this where one entire political party is compromised and the other can’t marshal an effective resistance. It’s like the Constitution almost-but-not-quite provides guidance, but none of the guidance it provides is enough to deal with this dire a situation.

This is one of those situations where we need to learn from other countries. The government as established by the Constitution was right for the time, but when it leads to situations like this, it has to be updated with better ideas.

        • Amy!

If the Democratic Party can’t win enough in the coming election to take action, then there’s no chance for a constitutional convention. If it can, then there’s no reason.

The exception: if there were some groundswell of popular support, passing cowed and thus agreeable Republican-dominated state houses nationwide. I’m not seeing that, either.

For peaceful change, the current system has to be used. If it works, then there’s a “why change it deeply?” argument. If it’s not peaceful, we’re way past talking about amendments.

          • Claire

We’re well past the point where an “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” argument can realistically be made. Trump has caused too much damage to our institutions and our position in the world. We need to learn from this and take formal steps to safeguard against it in the future or, frankly, we completely deserve whatever catastrophe comes next.

          • Amy!

Hmmm. Maybe. Depends on what the proposed solution is, and whether it makes things better. Has to be able to succeed where something as innocuous as “oh, hey, and women are just as human as men” failed (meaning the ERA).

      • I’m aware of that but I was talking about an enlightened nation.

        • Yr. Gma

I don’t disagree with you but being enlightened is not enough. We would still have to change the Constitution (or toss it out and start over.)

    • sw19wilson

Parliamentary “vote of no confidence” comes in handy in situations like this.

    • Vagenda of Rebel Scum

I don’t think the Founders conceived of a situation like this. With all the inbred, weak chinned, depraved, and downright crazy hereditary monarchs out there, they never imagined Trump and his enablers

A risky move, as it invites the obvious reply, “Mr. Trump was still a subject of investigation into possible collusion with the Russians.”

      • DrBigHead

Yes, but that will not keep them from doing all they can to turn this back on Comey.

        • boyblue122

“The obstruction of justice articles of impeachment counts are stacking up, it seems,” an active duty FBI agent told The Daily Beast on Tuesday. Firing Comey, the agent added, was a “big gamble. You’ve got to kill him, metaphorically. You can’t just wound him.” …

A senior official in the Trump administration, who previously worked on the president’s campaign, offered a candid and brief assessment of the fallout from that string of bad press: “I don’t see how Trump isn’t completely fucked.”

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2017/05/16/trump-officials-on-comey-memo-dont-see-how-trump-isnt-completely-fcked

Completely agree. Comey is a motherfucking beast.

  • jowgajen

TRUMP: Too stupid to be circumspect in attempting to obstruct justice.

    • Vagenda of Rebel Scum

Given his background, he walked in thinking everyone was his employee. Dealing with NY pols like Giuliani probably contributed to that attitude also.

      • Claire

How long should it have taken him to find out otherwise? My vote is for “the length of his campaign, during which time he should have been doing some fact-finding about how the American government actually operates.”

        • Vagenda of Rebel Scum

Since Trump is the smartest guy in the room, there’s no reason for him to learn anything. Since he knows it all, his job is to direct others, and they’re supposed to obey.

          • Claire

Yes, exactly. There’s nothing anyone else can teach him, on any topic. The fact that he’s a 70-year-old white guy means that he has reached the pinnacle of education and wisdom.

  • Daniel Hooper

This doesn’t redeem Comey completely in my eyes; I still feel like his blabbing about Hilary’s e-mails was the tipping point that got us into this mess to begin with…
…That bring said, every journey begins with the first step, so he’s starting on the road to redemption.

    • Carpe Vagenda

Only, no, because he didn’t set a foot on that road until he got fired.

      • RobespierreHoo

None of us know what Comey was doing in the months the FBI investigation unfolded. I’m assuming urging his agents on, and working with EDVA prosecutors presenting evidence to the Alexandria grand jury.Let’s be patient. Christmas morning, we’ll get a pony.

        • Carpe Vagenda

Yeah, no. He forswore himself against the candidate he failed to indict who was running against the guy whose campaign sign was on his lawn. Fuck him with something spiky.

          • RobespierreHoo

I’ll be back for receipt of contrition in a few months, if that.

          • Carpe Vagenda

This is probably not a productive use of your time.

        • Carpe Vagenda

Uh, yeah. Hooey. Assumes wish fulfillment not in evidence.

      • Daniel Hooper

Well, like I said, this is a start. Besides, if he didn’t hang around and make a paper trail, it’d just be his word against Trump. Don’t get me wrong; he’s still on the crap list. I’m just saying, he’s starting to work his way off.

        • Carpe Vagenda

No, he’s going to need to do a lot more to prove anything to me.

    • Roadstergal

I agree. He fucked us over, and everything since is steps toward redemption.

      • jowgajen

There’s no narrative here. There’s a guy who does what he thinks is best in the moment and doesn’t tend to revisit them after the fact. Comey is a product of his law enforcement background mixed with his own proclivities. One of which is high self regard. Another of which is integrity.

    • Yr. Gma

Redemption? Who cares, as long as he’s screwing over Donnie. The enemy of my enemy and all that.

    • Claire

I hope so, but he stuck his neck so far out to tip the election to Donald Trump that I just don’t see how it can be reasonably assumed that he’d actively try to bring down the President he sacrificed his reputation to put into the Oval Office. I guess it’s possible that he just really hates both of them, but when push came to shove, he put his thumb on the scales for Trump.

      • Résistance Land Shark Ω

His reputation is gone … he’s going Thelma and Louise on this shit.

        • Claire

That’s pretty much his only option at this point if he wants to avoid going down in history as the FBI director who completely screwed over America in order to put his preferred candidate in office.

But people still keep insisting that he’s this huge white-hat patriot. Bullshit. Let him do penance on this for the rest of his life; it still won’t be enough to make up for the damage that Trump has done to the country and to the world because Comey threw the election to him.

      • jowgajen

I doubt he believed Trump could be elected. A lot of people were working to weaken Clinton’s presidency rather than elect Trump.

If I don’t believe a gun is loaded and I point it at a toddler and pull the trigger, if that gun happens to be loaded, that toddler will be just as dead as if I’d shot her on purpose. When a person has done this much damage, no one gives a shit about intentions and beliefs. You killed the toddler? Fuck you, go to jail. You got Trump elected President? Fuck you, live with the blame.

Following advice, potential FBI chiefs steer clear of job under Trump (Reuters)

Advisers to Judge Merrick Garland and U.S. Senator John Cornyn of Texas told Reuters they discouraged them from leading the Federal Bureau of Investigation, cautioning that they would be leaving important, secure jobs for one fraught with politics and controversy.

The advisers, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the new FBI director would have little job security and heightened scrutiny by political observers following President Donald Trump’s abrupt firing of James Comey on May 9.

An interesting read if things ever calm down enough for you to look at it. Starts a little slow but it’s the best explanation I’ve seen so far

We overanalyze Trump. He is what he appears to be.

No agenda guides him, no past commitments or statements restrain him, so no one, not even his closest allies (much less the American public or foreign governments) can trust him, even for a second. He will do what makes him feel dominant and respected, in the moment, with no consideration of anything else, not because he has chosen to reject other considerations, but because he is, by all appearances, incapable of considering them.

    • Résistance Land Shark Ω

“Any port in a storm” As long as he’s gone.

We can handle Pence … shame is a powerful fucking weapon against the pseudo-pious.

      • Cat Cafe for the Investigation

Also: Pence, as horrendous as he is, lacks the weird cult popular support that Trump has; he’ll have to deal with the fallout from the Trumpanzees; he’ll also have to face the fact that the previous president was pushed out, and it can happen to him; and he is roundly, hugely disliked by the American public, which will make the Repugs nervous about their re-election prospects. They probably would not go along with his heinous idealogical bullshit. He’ll be vastly weakened. And on the plus side, he’s mostly sane.

        • jowgajen

Eh, I was with you until “mostly sane”. He’s nothing of the sort, he’s a Teatard religious nut.

      • John Resistant Tovarich Smith

I think Pence is worried also. If Trump goes down, he’ll take any and all down with him. His ego will not let him do otherwise.

      • Lori

Shame used to work, but I’m not convinced that it does any more. US Evangelicals have totally sold their souls to the GOP for power and the modern GOP is utterly shameless. Christianists have convinced themselves that saving the baybees and protecting the children from scourge of teh ghay, which makes the baby Jesus cry, are trump cards in any argument about decency or morality. You can’t shame that.

    • Vagenda of Rebel Scum

Resigning is for losers. I don’t think he’ll resign- he’s toughed out a lot of criminal investigations. It’s possible that he’ll leave if his family convinces him that their business interests will be destroyed if he stays.

  • Joe Beese

Just on ideological grounds alone, Trump doesn’t command much loyalty.

So, while Republican lawmakers may be concerned that they’ll be voted out of office if they turn on Trump, or turn on him prematurely, he has less protection than any of the previous presidents whose actions have tested their party’s elected officials in Congress.

He’s also a far bigger headache than any of his predecessors, including Nixon. Nixon couldn’t shake his original sin no matter how he wriggled and writhed, but he didn’t create a new crisis several times a day. He wasn’t grossly and obviously unprepared to deal with foreign policy or classified information. He didn’t contradict his aides on a routine basis. He had an actual legislative plan and he was capable of implementing it. The only thing that Nixon and Trump seem to truly share is a common enemy in the intelligence community. Don’t forget that Deep Throat turned out to be Mark Felt, who was the Associate Director of the FBI.

That commonality shouldn’t comfort Trump and however you slice it, there’s just no way that Trump has as much rope as Nixon had.

Much as I would lo-oo-ove Comey’s memos to lead to impeachment, I don’t think that the GOP will go there – ’cause they want ACA gone, Medicaid gutted, and Medicare and education privatised. Although I am not in any position to offer concrete aid to my American friends, would mass demonstrations, calling/emailing/faxing representatives and vociferous support for Dems in local, state and federal elections make the GOP worried enough to move impeachment in the House of Representatives?

    • Roni Raven

I think events will leave them no choice. Flynn and Manafort have been subpoenaed. Things are going to continue downhill.

They’ll want to go into 2018 bragging about how they stood up to an overbearing POTUS, even though he was from their Party, and they should be rewarded for their bravery in doing so. Impeach too soon, Dems have time to batter them for not doing it sooner. Impeach too late, they’re still in process while they need to be campaigning, and Dems can berate them for taking too long. they’ve gotta get the timing juuuuuuuuust right.

  • Rhymes With Orange

James Comey may help undo Trump, but even that will only partially offset the grave damage he did to the country last year.

  • Pinkham’s Law

And to think, Trump could have fired Comey on, say, Jan 24th and MADE EVERYBODY HAPPY.

In July, Dir. Comey took it upon himself to say that Hillary was cleared. This wasn’t his call to make. In that press conference, he made himself the focus, rather than the investigation. That was inappropriate.

In late October, Dir. Comey announced [Wiener emails, blah blah], which proved, only a few days later, to be false. While this may have helped me, it was, still, inappropriate, and likely violated the Logan Act.

Both of these incidents show poor judgment, and I cannot have an FBI director whose judgment I don’t trust. Accordingly, I have asked for, and Dir. Comey has given me, his resignation.

Voila! The Trumpanzees have a scapegoat for Shilliary not going to jail, and the Left has a sacrificial lamb for Hillary’s shocking defeat. Win/win/win.

    • weejee

      How’s yer hubby?

    • Jeff Greer

      A not-so-minor correction:
Comey didn’t “announce” shit in late October, he sent a letter, possibly marked as classified, to Jason Chaffetz, who removed the headers (and classification markings, if present) and released it.

      • Pinkham’s Law

Technically correct, but semantics, really. Could still be spun to fit the overall narrative I suggest.

    • Zippy W Pinhead

The good news is- this mess will leave Pence severely damaged (assuming he doesn’t get dragged down too), so he’ll be relatively powerless

      • Suse

Gawd, I hope so. He’d be a horrifyingly terrible POTUS.

        • Zippy W Pinhead

Impeachment won’t be quick- by the time it would happen we’d be entering the midterm election season and Pence will be shackled to the boy king, as will the rest of the party.

          • Daisy

I’m skeptical about how much that’ll matter though; midterms never go well for Dems, and NC in particular has a worse voting environment than some developing democracies.

          • Lori

Midterms tend to go badly for Dems because we usually have very poor turnout. I’m thinking 2018 may be the exception to that rule.

          • Daisy

Better turnout won’t matter if half the Dems can’t vote though.

          • Lori

Vote suppression is an issue, but that’s been going on for a while and Clinton still managed to get almost 3 million more votes than Trump. GOTV is going to require serious work, but I think it can be done.

Comey Damns Trump By Saying He Didn’t Write Memos On Obama Because Obama Was Truthful
By Jason Easley on Tue, May 16th, 2017 at 8:36 pm
A source close to former FBI Director James Comey said that he didn’t write memos about his conversations with President Obama because the conversations were routine and Obama was truthful.

      • SeeTrain65

        There is the difference.

      • C4TWOMAN

        Oooh burn!

    • Joe Beese

I’m not comfortable with how that will be spun. I’d be happier if he kept notes on Obama too.

      • CogitoErgoBibo

On the other hand, I’m not keeping a record for HR if I have a good boss. Only if I have a bad one. I still see your point, though.

      • boyblue122

Hes gonna keep memos on the same mundane stuff Obama does?

      • C4TWOMAN

But it shows this is an irregular situation. If it was his job to keep notes on Obama, sure. Keeping notes on the president is clearly something under normal circumstances he wouldn’t do.
But you’re right of course about how it will be spun.

        • BoatOfVelociraptors

There’s this red hue to the background as well.

        • jesterpunk

Its really low budget, they just went to the dollar store and found someone buying makeup and put them in charge of makeup. The lighting person must have been buying a lightbulb.

In a letter to acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, Chaffetz requested “all memoranda, notes, summaries and recordings referring or relating to” communications between Comey and Trump by May 24. This is 2017. Why do I need to go to my local public library to get “The Federalist Papers.” I read that when I was young. Why? People have no sense of history or sensible discourse.

This is really not looking good for Trump. It’s been reported that he’s unhappy and sad and mad. The WH staff is in chaos. Melania is in NYC (maybe staff dug up a DC pee hooker for the evening). He’s supposed to travel to, like, five countries over a couple of days (in the company of FLOTUS Ivanka – wait – Don Jr., Jared, and President Bannon, and make a speech on Islam to the Saudis.

Obvious degenerative dementia not withstanding, what’s the over/under on whether he resigns before or after the trip?

  • Joe Beese

If Trump goes this week, it will be damaging for midterms, and forgotten by 2020. Pence will have 3.5 years as an incumbent (and they’re not impeaching Pence too, stop kidding yourselves).

And Trump showed the way, overt racist nationalism combined with overt populist economic appeals. He didn’t deliver, but a smarter Trump with the Bannon play book could kill the entire establishment of both parties and rule as president for life. It would’ve been so simple, all Trump had to do was be not insane, and deliver on his promise to round up ‘the other’ while actually giviing out bread and circuses for his racist base. The Wall + universal health care. Voting restrictions + crackdowns on Wall Street. Giving handouts while consolidating his power. A competent demagogue backed by republicans desperate for tax cuts could’ve done it, and still can. He could’ve come so close to defining the entirety of the United States political history as brief experiment in liberal democracy ultimately ending in tyranny like the Roman Republic, only he turned on to be too goddamn incompetent to follow through.

Democrats still have no response. “Not Trump” wasn’t enough before, it’s not enough today, and it won’t be enough if he goes. Republicans aren’t going away, even after this, even if Trump goes down. And they’ve been given a shiny new ethnofacist/populist pathway to victory that’s not going away either.

If/when he’s out, the work starts again, it never stops starting.

    http://www.metafilter.com/166945/Obstruction-of-Justice-Witness-Intimidation-Oh-My#7030294

    • Al Swearengen

Umm, “Not Trump” is pretty powerful right now. Ask the GOP Congress. They’re shitting themselves.

And Pence isn’t going to have a cakewalk. There’s nothing he can do with the fact that the GOP agenda polls like runny cat shit. That’s why their caucus is fractured in half, not Trump. Trump will sign anything put in front of him.

      • I agree with that bit. And also that the work is never ending. It is, fact of life. It is never ending. There will be losses. There will be victories. But it is a full out lifelong fight we hand to our children’s children’s children.

But yeah, without Trump to shield them from the inevitable harm their policies will cause to their base, they are in for some trouble. With Trump they could always point and go “whatcha gonna do? You are a patriot and love him, right?”

    • uhm.
He had no intention of universal healthcare or cracking down on wall street….ever? Neither did Bannon?

And they’ll get around to that after this whole Benghazi mess is sorted out.

    • Amy!

They have an eye to reelection. Always. Part of the reason that they respond slowly is because they wait to hear polls, or their phones, and the informal polling that their offices maintain. If there’s a real groundswell of outrage, they’ll want to be leading the “honest side” of the party, righteously dealing with that corruption and evil that somehow, unaccountably, took advantage of their pious and well-intentioned party.

      • Daisy

Yeah, that’s basically the only thing I can see motivating them, and honestly, their usual response is mostly just to stop “the wrong people” from voting. I don’t have any confidence in their ability to do the right thing.

      • Notreelyhelping

        Their numbers are tanking.

      • C4TWOMAN

Agree with everything your wrote. I’m just baffled it’s taking SO LONG to get that program in gear. Like, whatisface with the foot who voted to do in the ACA–I wouldn’t do that in his shoes in this climate. that’s pure roasting material and the one group of activists who are organized and agitated are the ones protesting attacks on the ACA.
So I think there’s an element of “groupthink” or “everyone else is doing it, it’ll be fine” going on.

        • Amy!

Maybe some fear as well? Trump is pretty unprecedented, even in a country that saw GWB steal elections twice. The folks who stood up to him in the campaign all got shot down, and in fact seem to be in worse shape than Hillary, his opponent. The Republicans are pretty sure that they’re not going to appeal to Hillary backers (or worse, the Democrats who opposed Hillary from the left). They need to keep their own base. They’ll have to have a leader; the leader’s gonna have to be more or less untouchable by Trump’s goons; he or she is most likely to come from a purple (probably rapidly bluing) district (House) or state (Senate). And whoever it is who steps forward, if they’re not able to pull it off, is going to get savaged.

This is not our parents’ and grandparents’ party of personal responsibility. This is our and our children’s party of I’ve-got-mine-fuck-you. If they can find someone with morals and a backbone (hmmmmmm …), expect DRAMA, and some die-hards holding to Trump and his toxic shit, and some holding hard to their grift. But … finally … movement.

    • Old Man Yells at Cloud

It means that Lil’Donnie, Senator McTurtle and Speaker Eddie Munster are going to have a much harder time throwing Comey under the bus when they whitewash the whole thing. Which means that in the 2019 congressional investigation, he will be a credible witness.

  • Joe Beese

Nixon was disgraceful in the complex way that being an ambitious, insecure politician who carries a grudge can be disgraceful.

Trump is disgraceful in the way that a very wealthy real estate developer with extensive ties to Russian mob money laundering, a history of sexual assault, several mail order foreign brides, an openly displayed incestuous desire for his older daughter, germophobia, narcissistic personality disorder, and owning a gold-plated toilet can be disgraceful.

At some point we had an insane Trump-like boss who accused her of…I don’t even remember what…but my friend had the email chain to prove her point to that bitch. I’m still not Comey’s biggest fan, but I AM A FAN OF THE DEEP STATE. I am part of the deep state, and proud fucking of it. I’m just not as good at that paper trail thing as Comey or my friend. But there are many, many, civil servants who are. Please, Dog, may they all have paper trails that incriminate their evil lying fucking bosses: Pruitt, Mulvaney, Price, DeVos, and so on. Especially Trump. And Pence. AOT,K.

My evil too big to fail employer automagically deletes emails older than six months if they’re not in a special folder called “three year folder.” And we can’t have PST files anymore. We’re also only given one gig of storage space on the network server. This is so there isn’t a paper trail whenever the lawyers come calling with subpoenas.

Back in the day (we’re talking Win98 days) I was working on the help desk and a manager called up and asked me if there was any way I could help his admin assistant rescue her email. As it turned out, she had saved every scrap of email that had come through for something like three years and had a 2.2 gigabyte mailbox. We had a tool that could attempt to fix it, but I told the manager that 2.2GB had blown past any reasonable limit (about 400 MB) a long time ago, and it was likely the tool would destroy her inbox. I don’t remember what we ended up doing.
