Rachel Maddow has had it with your shit
STAY AWAY FROM HER, ANDY LACK.

Since the election and inauguration of Donald John “Pussgrab” Trump, MSNBC’s ratings have gone through the roof. “The Rachel Maddow Show” is the highest-rated cable news show in existence, as she focuses her laser pointer on the Trump regime each night. Right behind Maddow’s show in ratings is the Lawrence O’Donnell program, which is good and nice in its own right. Whether O’Donnell’s ratings are so high because people love him, or if it’s just because liberals are too lazy to change the channel after Rachel, we do not know. What we DO know is that MSNBC’s primetime formula is working.

So Andy Lack, the head of NBC News, apparently wants to fuck it all up. It’s being reported that O’Donnell’s contract expires in just a few weeks, and nobody at MSNBC is talking about renewing it:

Lawrence O’Donnell, host of MSNBC’s “The Last Word,” has just four weeks left in his contract, and the cable network does not appear to be interested in renewing his deal. Four well-placed sources tell HuffPost that MSNBC has not been in contact with O’Donnell’s team of representatives to negotiate a new deal. […]

If O’Donnell’s contract is not renewed, that would not come as a surprise to many network insiders. Andy Lack, the chairman of NBC News, is no fan of O’Donnell’s program, sources say. Some say it’s because he doesn’t appreciate the liberal nature of “The Last Word,” but others say it’s about the fact that O’Donnell rejected Lack’s request to move his program from 10 p.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time.

Um, yeah, OK. Huffington Post quotes NBC spokes-nerds issuing Sean Spicer-esque statements about how Lawrence O’Donnell has the full confidence of the NBC chairman, but you’ll pardon us if we ignore all that.

HuffPo notes that if O’Donnell’s show ends, that will make the orange asshole in the White House very happy, because O’Donnell is always very mean to Orange Asshole, and that some at MSNBC think Lack is making decisions based on what he thinks will make Orange Asshole happy:

There is a fear, among some at MSNBC, that Lack is making programming decisions in an effort to appease the Trump administration (an accusation that has been made of CNN and Fox News), which may lead to more access to the White House and in turn, conservative viewers.

That … is a really stupid business plan.

Lack also apparently thinks O’Donnell only gets so many viewers because Rachel is so popular, which as we said, could be true. The night time hosts at MSNBC are ranked, in order of talent, as follows:

ONE: Rachel.

TWO: Chris Hayes

THREE: Lawrence.

FOUR: All the others.

LAST PLACE: Greta.

But it seems Lack might also suffer from a wee spot of Dunning-Kruger, just like his boy Trump. He’s pretty sure MSNBC is doing so BIGLY TREMENDOUS BRILLIANT because of his own decisions:

Lack is said to dislike when people attribute his cable network’s blockbuster ratings to Trump: He believes, according to multiple sources, that the high ratings are largely a product of his programming decisions.

Yeah, about that … Do y’all remember Ryan Grim’s gigantic investigative piece about MSNBC from a couple weeks ago? Grim reported that Lack is very GRRR about how all his liberal evening hosts have such high ratings, because that makes it hard for him to rub his dick expertise all over the network and make it suck really hard better:

Lack has targeted the network’s progressive programming since arriving at the network in spring 2015. […]

Lack brought in Chuck Todd to host a 5 p.m. show. He canceled Al Sharpton’s 6 p.m. show, and ran one from Bloomberg’s Mark Halperin and John Heilemann in its place.

The Halperin-Heilemann program, which has since been canceled, was a hard-to-watch ratings disaster. Lack moved Van Susteren, formerly of Fox News, into the slot. That show has also been a ratings wreck. Across the board, shows that Lack has put his stamp on and moved to the center or to the right have not performed as well as the ones he has left alone

“Every hour that Andy has not touched are the strongest hours on the network. Everything he has touched is lower rated,” said one well-placed insider.

Does that remind you of any current American presidents who have tiny hands and are total losers?

Look, MSNBC is still halfway decent, but let’s be clear: We don’t need another Fox News. We already have one, and it sucks a badger’s B-hole. And what would Lack want to put on after Rachel? Something that will REALLY make Rachel’s viewers want to stick around, like Greta Van Susteren saying “HENGHHHHH?” a lot? What about somebody real smart like moron MSNBC contributor Hugh Hewitt, who is apparently in negotiations for his own show, and whose only contribution to the network seems to be sucking up to Trump and then getting promptly kicked in the face by everybody else in the studio? Hey, while they’re at it, why don’t they beg Bill O’Reilly to bring his lady-grabbing hands over to MSNBC? Would that be WINNING?

Why is this stupid moron trying to break something that doesn’t need fixing? Is he really doing this for Donald Trump, whose record of “winning” in the White House is so great he has a 39% approval rating at the moment? We just don’t know.

But we do know this: If that asshole Andy Lack even tries to come for Rachel, we will literally say prayers for his penis to fall off inside a land shark’s mouth. Please don’t make Wonkette say such unkind prayers, as it is unbecoming and not at all ladylike!

If he wants a right wing person who would be entertaining, what about Ana Navarro? She’s pretty right wing and a hoot. Greta is a lot of things but a hoot she is not. Also, it doesn’t say much for her observation skills that she literally never noticed that Fox might be a wee bit sexist.

  • Resistance Fighter Callyson

O’Donnell rejected Lack’s request to move his program from 10 p.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time.

Fuck that noise–I’d never be able to see his show. Piss off, Andy Lack!

Instead of going right, he should try to achieve a Huntley-Brinkley, or Walter Kronkite sense of truthfulness…

    • MizzMazz

Wouldn’t that be refreshing? Find some actual hardcore journalists, deliver news backed up with citations and references, no distracting chyrons or visuals, just clean visuals, and…
      …and then I woke up.

      • Amy!

Oh, hell, let ’em take the model of point-counterpoint (nobody’s using it since Jon Stewart utterly destroyed those two worthless dipshits live). Not to do boneheaded editorials on the air, no. Set up two teams of journalists, with a talking head to lead each (and rising stars doing the legwork, one hopes). A progressive (or simply sane) one, and a conservative (raging dipshit) one. Turn ’em loose. Give ’em the same airtime. Hell, go full reality fucking news television: let the viewers vote for who’s more convincing on each side of each issue.

There. “Fair” and “balanced”. No fucking cheating, Lackwit; you can’t have the progressive and conservative team investigating “the climate change hoax.” They investigate “climate change,” and if one wants to call it a hoax, fine. Same for Trump’s foreign policy, you say “Trump’s foreign policy,” and if one wants to call it a hoax and a chimera, fine.

        :-)

“Lack is said to dislike when people attribute his cable network’s blockbuster ratings to Trump: He believes, according to multiple sources, that the high ratings are largely a product of his programming decisions.”

Lord, grant me the confidence of a mediocre white man.

    • Amy!

Ah, but you’re thinking small. If you had the confidence of a truly stupid, ignorant, and mean white man, you could go the top! You could be president!

      • willi0000000

        anybody can become president.

[ the above statement should be considered a warning ]

  • boyblue122

Whats the strategy? Get rid of the base viewership to try to attract Fox viewers who will never even bother watching MSNBC anyways

    • sw19wilson

      Do it to both sides?

  • As a founding member of the Joy Ann Reid fan club, I’d like to see her with a prime time spot as well.

What’s not to Lack about that?

    • Chris

Reid has been one of the few bright spots in the last year. I’m just concerned that they have her pitching in so much that she is working 7 days a week. I won’t get tired of her but I’m afraid of her getting burned out.

      • OrdinaryJoe

She won’t burn out, they will just shove her aside. She is Mrs.Joe’s number 1. If it’s Saturday, it’s Joy.

  • ManchuCandidate

Lack… a family name that makes so much sense at this time.

  • Juan de Fuca

Whether O’Donnell’s ratings are so high because people love him, or if it’s just because liberals are too lazy to change the channel after Rachel, we do not know.

I personally change the channel when O’Donnell comes on. Could just be me or it could just be that he’s following a tough act. Or it’s probably because the guy just bores the hell out of me. Seems like a great person, love his politics. I change the channel.

    • Resistance Fighter Callyson

IMHO, Lawrence has steadily improved since last year’s clusterfuck of an election. He seems to have decided that he gives zero fucks about anything other than good journalism…

…oh, fuck, now I see why Andy Lack doesn’t want him around. Fuck.

      • Juan de Fuca

Please don’t take my word for why Lack is doing this, and I can see why people like him. CalI and support him. I just think he’s…I dunno what it is. He bores the hell out of me. Could be a personality thing or it could just be that he’s following Rachel. I only know that I’d rather paint a random wall in my house just to watch it dry than watch O’Donnell.

I don’t know what solution is though because there aren’t too many others who could probably take the handoff from Rachel but I really can’t stand to watch O’Donnell’s show. Just my $0.02.

        • Good_Gawd_Yall

I go back and forth on him. Sometimes I get tired of his stuff and change the channel partway through. I do get tired of how often he shows clips of Lord Dampnut. But I remind myself fairly often of how he can be so, so good I need a cigarette after one of his sessions, and I don’t even smoke.

        • Chris

          I’m with Mrs. de Fuca.

    • Fartknocker

I like Rachel a lot but I prefer Lawrence because he offers very good experience from his time in the White House and he represents UNICEF by promoting and dropping his own dollars for school desks for African children. Plus, Rachel taps that damn writing pen incessantly when she gets thrilled.

      • Juan de Fuca

That and she needs to get rid of the whole paper crumbling sound effect thing on her show. It was cool at first Rachel, now please stop that.

Other than that, she’s awesome. One of the best at what she does.

      • Good_Gawd_Yall

I never noticed that (thanks, Obama!) but I have noticed that sometimes when she gets excited she does that thing Chris Hayes does, of saying “Right?” as if it’s a comma.

    • JMP

He’s not as good as Maddow or Hayes – and I find it annoying how he brings up writing for The West Wing nearly as often as Matthews brings up working for Tip O’Neil – but he’s pretty decent still, miles above most of the cable new talking heads.

          • WiscoJoe

Naked is a great idea for MSNBC. I’d tune in (not for Joe and Mika, but others…) Seriously though, MSNBC should do more innovative things to appeal to a younger, cable-news averse audience. I feel like the post-Rachel time slot would be prime for a Daily Show type program or celebrity panel show, like Watch What Happens, but the conversation is about politics. Or some VICE style documentaries.

        • Biel_ze_Bubba

Special Victims Unit, with Trump and his henchmen as the villains?

MSNBC had become FauxNewz Light. Not a formula that is going to keep the new eyeballs on the screen. I don’t watch Morning Blowjob but the two love birds seem to be good for ratings. But the new KKKonservatards they have on are awful. Greta Van Umwatchable, What happened to Steve Schmidt? Great observer with a very contemporary viewpoint, not like George Willynillybaseball. They are doing just fine without access to the Whitman’s House so why crash and burn the whole thing now?

another good one to watch on msnbc, tho she’s usually on early in the day, is stephanie ruhle… she’s a former bloomberg tv editor-at large, her specialty is wall st finance, and she was the first to uncover the london ‘whale’ in 2012 that led to JPMorgan disaster, but is very good about hammering on the current political disaster in this country and worldwide…she’s very smart, always has her facts lined up, and takes no bullshit from the bullshit artists around her…she’ll jump in and call out BS without hesitation…if o’donnell’s time slot wer to go to her, i’d have an easier time with it

    • Good_Gawd_Yall

Sorry, but Steve Schmidt hasn’t suffered NEARLY enough penance for the $arah Palin thing. • mfp

I think it’s time to bring back the Naked News idea, but this time with a pundit/opinion show, and actual pundits and journalists (of both sexes) instead of actresses and models. They could run an internet-only show. Paunchy men and frumpy women in their 50s and 60s sllowwly removing their suits… oh yeah.

    • everstar

I also miss Shoutin’ Ed Schultz, but that’s because he reminded me of family discussions. We don’t so much argue as agree with each other at the tops of our lungs. (Ed’s apparently fallen in with the Russians, which I find both bewildering and rather sad.)

      • britishvoiceman

Ed started off as a conservative Rush Limbaugh wannabe on talk radio in 1992 and didn’t switch his political views until the late 90s. Although his show on MSNBC was definitely left-leaning, I watched an ad on RT featuring several of their hosts stating what they felt a vote for a previous US president signified. It contained this comment from Ed “a vote for Ronald Reagan led to the fall of the Berlin Wall” which led me to think he was returning to his right-wing roots.Like the rest of the political commentators on RT, he’s refused to consider the possibility that Russia attempted to interfere with the US election.
BTW, RT does have some very good programs which DON’T have a Russian bias, including Redacted Tonight, Watching the Hawks, Larry King and Thom Hartmann.

  • Biel_ze_Bubba

Maddow could jump to another network, for twice the money, and take the whole studio – and all of her viewers -with her. Overnight.
And when the ratings intantaneously cratered, Lack would be shitcanned.

    • Mehmeisterjr

And then he could hire Alex Jones. Winning!

      • Rachel Book Harlot

He could do the entire show shirtless!

    • kaydenpat

If only there were another network that could host her, O’Donnell, Hayes and Joy Reid. Now that would be something I’d watch 24/7.

  • Vincent Ricola

I try to love Chris Hayes and absolutely understand why other people think he’s great, but I just can’t for some reason. His townhalls and constant book shilling bugs me on a weird (unfair to him) level. But Rachel is the best and I’ve always liked pretty-eyed Lawrence, so if they go away, I’ll never ever watch MSNBC.

    • Good_Gawd_Yall

Chris reminds me of the class know-it-all who wasn’t content to just wave his hand around when he knew the answer (every. fucking. time.) but went ‘”Ooh! Ooh! I know!” and nearly jumped out of his seat every. fucking. time. Wearisome.

      • Shoto

I put the list as Maddow, O’Donnell/Reid (tied), Hayes, and everybody else way down at dumpster level.

        • “M”

          This list.

Nose kind of out of joint her (#1-ranked on the weekends in her time slot, okay??) shows weren’t on this list in the first place.

    • kaydenpat

Joy Reid is also cool. While I no longer watch MSNBC, I love her tweets. She’s so defiant.

      • Vincent Ricola

Yeah, I always forget about Joy (who I love) because I follower her on twitter and her show is unfortunately buried on the weekends.

    • everstar

I have a big ol’ nerd crush on Chris Hayes for several reasons: he wears horn-rimmed glasses unironically, he was Rachel’s protegé, I liked his books, I think he’s cute, and I was also that kid who nearly dislocated their arm trying to raise it high enough. I deeply appreciated his weekend show when it was on, since it made such an effort to showcase diverse panelists. I understand why people find him annoying, but I think he tries really hard to use his privilege for good.

    • sadboy

According to legend, Hayes once had perfect eyesight but made the mistake of walking between Steve Kornacki and a touchscreen, with the resultant overcaffeinated finger thrust in the eye permanently damaging his vision.

  • Shoto

Maybe MSNBC could do a 24/7 Joe-Scar / Stepford Mika / Tweety Hardball / Greta Henghhh? roundtable type deal? Throw in some Chuck Todd and Mark Halperin and the ratings are through the roof, amirite?

I saw this coming by the way they covered Pumpkinhead from the beginning of his campaign. And frankly, it all started when Comcast bought NBC. There is no liberal media, there is only corporate media and Fox. I have no doubt the douche called Lack will find a way to drive out Rachel as well.

  • Bitter Scribe

But the lying fake media are liberals. That’s why we get decisions like this. That’s why the NYT hires useless SOBs like Ross Douthat and Bret Stephens. Etc.

Sadly, I’m not sure what can be done to stop Lack from turning MSNBC into Fox News lite. After MSNBC got rid of Martin Bashir because of some b.s. reason, I pretty much gave up on it. I stopped watching completely after the election. Good on those of you who will make calls to try to stop Mr. O’Donnell’s cancellation.

    • everstar

Maybe they’ll change the title to “The Penultimate Word”?

  • disqus_lWwzrwNaw6

News organizations run by corporations constantly have business before committees of Congress—mergers, acquisitions, labor, regulatory, and tax issues. It is well known that committees of Congress can be extraordinarily vindictive toward corporations that have displeased them. Republicans are particularly vile, which is one reason why they enjoy such disproportionate support from the business community (the other reason is that they all really like the idea of killing the safety net, eliminating taxes and regulations, and outlawing the right of ordinary citizens to do things like sue corporations in courts of law).

Andy Lack is a vile man, a corporate reactionary. And even if he weren’t, Comcast, which runs NBC/MSNBC, has been running it hard to the right ever since they took it over. These people all see the 2018 mid-terms hurtling toward them like a runaway train, and they can read those generic Congressional ballots that show a 16% advantage for the Democrats as easily as we can.

They want to get control of the message before this whole Democratic voting thing gets out of hand.

PS What Andy Lack is doing at MSNBC is pretty much par for the corporate journalistic course. It’s kind of like what Sinclair Broadcast Group is doing to local news outlets all over America. Expect to see lots more of the blend of voter suppression and outright propaganda that put Donald in the Oval Office.

    • Resistance Ftr PuckStopsHere

Supply-side programming: “This time, it’ll work. Really. “

  • Jgb979

Conservatives believe Fox News is the only truth telling organization on the planet. Every other organization top to bottom is entirely liberal. If you spent time around the conservative periphery: megyn kelly didn’t go to NBC because they paid her a billion dollars. Megyn Kelly went because she’s a liberal now.

Hey non idiot television programmers! How bout making an actual liberal network!!

    • SeeTrain65

When every owner is Conservative, that’s going to be tough.

    • “M”

“Conservatives believe Fox News is the only truth telling organization on the planet.”

The crazy part about that to me is that Roger Ailes registered them with the FCC as an entertainment organization as opposed to a news organization specifically so they wouldn’t have to tell the truth.

  • CATMAN

Not a surprise here as NBC was bought by Comcast several years ago and their CEO is a notorious Conservasshole who has long sought to reduce the liberal slant of MSNBC and NBC by hiring Greta and Meagan plus giving airtime to dickheads like Hugh Hewitt

          • alwayspunkindrublic

It’s generally even worse; because of their pathological need to appear “non-partisan”, i.e., apologists for Trump voters, those 6 random people are usually Trump fanatics at a diner in Cousin Fuck, Alabama. Afterwards, the “experts”, in the interest of “balance” will say, “our random panel in Cousin Fuck DO raise interesting points about Obama being a time-traveling simian alien sent by Satan to destroy America…”. Lawrence O’Donnell is like getting to hear from your favorite uncle every night — if your favorite uncle were a 97% ADA liberal. And Rachel is a national treasure.

The guy who’s really surprises me, though, is Chris Hayes. He may look like the nerd who got his lunch money taken away, but he’s smart, and tough, and a hella good interviewer.

  • Jeff Mc Donald

I knew a race horse like this once. He was so used to having to come from behind, he just couldn’t seem to get comfortable in the lead. Lost some races that way.

  • kath1y

When the history of gigantic mistakes in television is written, Andy Lack will be an entire chapter of what not to do. The network’s ahead. He wants to fix that?

If Comcast News has even a lick of sense, they’ll put this guy out to pasture. He’s ruining the network and that’s not going to make them money. It’s going to cost them because nobody’s going to watch the people he’s bringing in, out of spite if nothing else.

MSNBC got big because they went liberal. They go conservative or even centrist, they lose most of their audience and the Fox News crowd isn’t going to change channels and make up the difference.

I’ve already reprogrammed the VCR to record Tapper at 4:00 and nothing at 6:00. What else will I have to stop watching? CNN is out there, Mr. Lack, it’s not as if we have nowhere to go.

    • Arguman

      The……VCR?????

No offense, but are you still using a VCR?

      • kath1y

I meant the recording machine that Comcast gave us as part of our set-up. As you might guess, I am not the household tech but I’m pretty sure we no longer have a VCR. Just a slip of the fingers by the resident luddite.

    • britishvoiceman

I don’t think MSNBC necessarily got big because they went liberal – they have three excellent liberal hosts (plus Joy-Ann Reid at weekends). CNN lost viewers by playing the “both sides do it” game and creating a completely false equivalence by giving equal time to intelligent articulate individuals and bigots, conspiracy theorists and other complete nutters.

    • sf_jeff

Comcast makes more money by prosyltizing tax breaks for rich people than they could ever make from MSNBC Profits.

The real reason Comcast should get rid of Andy Lack is he is singlehandedly making the best case possible for why we need to bring antitrust law back to this country.

“I do wish Chris Hayes would stop french-kissing Bernie Sanders on tv,”

      Huh????

  • Teto85

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

  • UnsaltedSinner

Just wait till “The George F. Will Hour” sets the world of television ablaze! Take that, libruls!

    • britishvoiceman

That could be fun – an intelligent, articulate conservative who freely admits that Trump is a complete disaster! George would be a far better option than that idiot Hugh Hewitt.

      • sf_jeff

But get George Will started talking about trade theory or economic productivity and he sounds just like Paul Ryan.

Maybe Lack should be reminded that Rachel and Susan ( her partner) went to a shooting range for their first date.

    • Woe-be-Gone Daze

and they met when Rachel was doing yard work and was working on Susan’s yard. so cuuuuuuute!

  • I don’t doubt that Lack wanted to put Greta on after Rachel for “balance”. But, Lawrence wouldn’t let him. How DARE he stick to the wording of his contract like that?

  • Woe-be-Gone Daze

Get rid of Greta, she is a horror. Replace her with Ari, trade a lawyer you want to smack (with votes) for a lawyer you want to smack with many kisses. Find a new legal analyst to replace him. But, please leave the rest alone, because that screamfest that is CNN is more than I can bear, and MSNBC is part of my sanity maintenance regimen. And we all know how important that is right now…

  • Kathy Ellis

I watch Rachel Maddow for a good laugh not for any kind of new substance

    • timpundit

lol, I read your comments for the same reason.

  • timpundit

I only watch the first 15 minutes of Rachel and have only started watching cable news again recently. I stopped watching all cable news after Orange Tuesday. So except for 15 mins of Maddow a few times a week, all my info comes from the internet tubes.

  • Bacchus Stuart

Andy Lack is absolutely worthless and always has been. I guess we all should have guessed what would be coming when he dredged up Brian Williams to deliver Fox-like truths. The network finally has two ratings winning shows in Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell and along comes this Lack of vision to fuck everything up. Every time I hear Lack’s name all I can think of is Big Daddy’s line from Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, “There’s a powerful stench of mendacity here.”

  • burningbush

I haven’t seen such a dick move since Danny Goldberg killed Air America Radio show “Morning Sedition” (with Marc Maron).

  • what, me worry?

Lack wants to move MSNBC towards hard news and away from partisan opinion shows. You do that by funding investigative journalism and hiring actual journalists. Lack seems to think that you do that by hiring right wing opinion talking heads.

    Yes, this is stupid.

  • Beowoof14

Do I detect the influence of Brian Roberts, conservative CEO of Comcast. Working to make his content arm similar to Ruperts?

  • Peggy

Make MSNBC great again by hiring back Keith olberman. Highest ratings with Olberman and Maddow.
