But they’re poor and/or disabled, so they’re expendable

Just when you already thought the crapsack “American Health Care Act” was already one of the worst ideas ever celebrated by Republicans, here’s some even more cheerful news about exactly how bad it is: Under the House bill passed Thursday, the AHCA’s Medicaid cuts will have a devastating effect on disabled children and their families, and on special education programs in schools. Not a problem, though, since maybe some billionaires benefiting from the bill’s huge tax cuts will start a charity to help some of the affected kids, especially if they’re photogenic and don’t have particularly unattractive disabilities. Let’s see how Trumpcare will extend the blessings of the New Cruelty to some of the most vulnerable people possible, who had the poor foresight not to form a powerful lobbying group.

Kids with disabilities are going to lose all sorts of assistance under the House bill, which will not only cut federal Medicaid support to states across the board, bus also changes the way Medicaid works in a fundamental way, placing “per-capita caps” on Medicaid benefits for each state. Paul Ryan is SO PROUD OF THIS, because it will finally stop poor people from getting all that healthcare they don’t deserve. The Center for American Progress details just some of the ways this new funding approach will hurt kids with disabilities. Among the services that’ll see cuts:

  • Screening, diagnostic, and treatment for kids with disabilities, including preventive services, testing and treatment for vision, dental, and hearing services.
  • Home and community-based therapy and services, which provides kids therapeutic services and medical supplies in the home instead of putting them in institutions. Saves money and allows families to keep kids with intellectual or developmental disabilities at home, but has to be cut because such services still cost something. Will many of the affected kids have to be institutionalized at a much higher cost to the public? Almost certainly, but since they won’t be out in public making non-disabled people feel uncomfortable — or worse, aware that THEIR TAX DOLLARS are being spent on someone else’s kid — nobody will notice or care! Win-Win, except for the families and the kids, and we’ve already established that other people’s children aren’t a priority for Republicans, at least once they’re out of the womb.
  • Prescription drugs: Medicaid helps kids get prescription treatments that help alleviate symptoms related to their disabilities. See “Other People’s Children” above. Fuck ’em, they cost money. Since when am I obliged to pay for your bad choices/bad luck in the genetic lottery/God’s will?
Also, since kids with disabilities make up one of the largest portions of the population served by Medicaid, caps on Medicaid assistance to states will hit them hardest. Just as well. A lot of people feel really uncomfortable when they see a tiny kid in a wheelchair with their face and limbs working all wrong, so cutting the funding will mean they stay home (or in a home) and then we won’t have to see that. You don’t see Donald Trump surrounding himself with a lot of visibly disabled kids, now do you? He already has experience in cutting off medical help for his own nephew’s severely disabled child, because he was angry at the nephew, so he’s probably ready to take that national and declare a purge of the lame, halt, and the unsettling from the public sphere. While he’s cutting off the useless eaters, Trump might even treat us to a hilarious parody of the funny way they move and talk.

Then there’s this New York Times story on how the AHCA will eliminate altogether one itsy-bitsy part of the Medicaid program, which will have a huge effect on special education programs in schools across the country. It’s such a small thing that you just know it couldn’t have been inadvertently cut — some bastards had to know it was there to get rid of it. Beyond the services provided to all kids on Medicaid, the program also helps millions of kids through their schools, helping with costs for physical therapy or feeding tubes. The huge cuts to Medicaid — $880 billion over 10 years — would have a direct effect on schools, too, according to a letter to Congress from AASA, a national group for school superintendents. The cuts, say the school advocates, would amount to rationing healthcare for disabled kids. But healthcare rationing is fine when Republicans do it — it’s only a death panel if Democrats ask for money for hospice.

Under the new Medicaid block-grant scheme, schools would no longer be considered “eligible Medicaid providers,” so they wouldn’t be eligible for reimbursements of services they provide to kids in special ed programs. Nifty little change, huh? Just THINK of all the money that’ll be saved to give to those deserving — and far more economically productive! — rich folks! Wouldn’t you know it, some liberal takers, who think the world owes disabled kids a living, are crying like snowflakes about that new arrangement, probably because it will mean less money for their Special Education Cadillacs:

“School-based Medicaid programs serve as a lifeline to children who can’t access critical health care and health services outside of their school,” said the letter sent this week by the Save Medicaid in Schools Coalition, which consists of more than 50 organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund, and the School Superintendents Association.

Schools are already required to provide services to kids with disabilities under federal Individuals With Disabilities Education Act; if that change in the AHCA becomes law, they’ll still be required to provide the services, but a key source of funding will dry up. Then again, under the Trump Regime, this may not be an issue, since Education Secretary Betsy DeVos wants special education to be left up to the states anyway, and brand new Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch was fine with absolutely minimal services for kids with disabilities — an opinion the full SCOTUS reversed during his confirmation hearings, how embarrassing.

In any case, should any parents of kids with disabilities make a fuss, we’re sure they’ll shut up once it’s explained to them that their kids aren’t economically useful and they should go cry to a church or something. America is no longer in the business of “helping people,” for fuckssake. To help quiet down the parents, perhaps lists of applicants for Medicaid could be made public so the Online Flying Monkey Brigade can descend on them with funny memes of Pepe the Frog throwing their kids into gas chambers.

*sigh* Way back when I married an athlete with a strict diet it seemed like a good idea. I could bounce quarters off her butt and was often late for work and out of change. Now as I get older, I crave gravy and pie.

          • MizzMazz

Can I have gravy and pie? And still get a butt like that? Damn, I didn’t think so. Im making a sweet pie today, but meat pies are delicious too.

          • William

Actually my bride has some recipe for Sheppard pie. You’d swear it was made with beef gravy, but we don’t eat meat. I know it has vegetable stock, wine, and mushrooms. It’s pretty good, but you have to do crap like this for a great butt. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/1c81b7f92bf552589494a4481c99c20e4bd2215d4a22d7833588e51a4802506c.jpg

          • MizzMazz

Nowadays my butt looks like a couple of dumplings in a bag, but in my 30’s, Romanian squats did the trick. She has fantastic arms! I miss being able to move! You can make pie out of anything. My meat eating ex would love my mushroom pie. Never missed the lack of meat.

          • William

Romanians are hard, but effective. You can do them with kettlebells.

          • C4TWOMAN

I don’t know why your other comment was removed. I’d said “Clearly she’s just warming up…” because the bar was unloaded and she looked fit.
Personally, I’m a low bar back squat person. But I understand Romanians are easier on some people’s joints.

          • William

I used the wrong photo and didn’t know how to remove it. She’s 63 years old. I’m pretty proud of her. She’s now having some hip issues. In 1982 she ran the Boston marathon with pins in her ankle. Funny, how the person I look up to the most is but 5 feet tall.with https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/037012d261eba69f6e7d2bea97446c1a93d70b1a8519bfb7d9196dc35e3ebaef.jpg

I recorded it from TV and my copy has swear words bleeped out, and it’s not available on DVD. Well worth seeing, and great cast including Linda Hunt and Graham Greene. OK, I just looked it up on IMDB. It’s available on Amazon Prime, which I also don’t have.

  • Jenny

It’s not just kids in wheel chairs, it is kids with auditory processing issues like my daughter, and kids like my son with adhd and “mood disorders.”

My children do not qualify for medicaid, but the money the school can bill medicaid for their therapists and specialists helps me and other tax payers. How you ask? Billing the federal government instead of state and local goverment for tax money already collected and allocated.

You won’t see a saving from the federal government. No sir, but you will see a tax increase locally when the school districts have to cover these expenses with property taxes. Or worse, remove them completely, leaving children with no help at all.

Republicans can eat canned clams because they are MONSTERS!

    • vivian

Little Jonathan, the child killed in the Northpark shooting in San Bernardino, was disabled. He was in a special needs classroom, where he was shot because his special needs teacher was targeted by her lunatic husband. That dimwit Betsy DeVos showed up here last week to do a photo op with the staff at Northpark, but she didn’t get to pose with Jonathan’s parents because they were in Mexico, burying their child in his hometown. I guess she did get to meet the little boy who was injured but survived. She told reporters “He seemed to happy to meet me.” Bitch, he’s happy to be alive. He, too, is disabled, and now he gets to worry about whether he will be allowed to stay alive and receive the special education he needs. This is California, where we are more civilized than the Electoral College states, but still, why do we have to keep fighting this battle over and over again?

Medicaid is the single largest insurer of children in the country. The program provides healthcare coverage for children when their families cannot otherwise afford it. Medicaid provides health coverage to approximately 30 million children, or about 40 percent of all U.S. children. The AHCA will literally kill kids.

    • Calli Arcale

That’s staggering. I knew it was a lot of kids but . . . 40% of all US kids are on Medicaid? Realizing the true scale of the poverty problem in America is sort of like realizing how big Jupiter really is. It blows the mind. But in a much more depressing way. How is this not the only thing anyone is talking about? How are we not all furious and ranting and raving about how badly we are screwing over the next generation, just for having the misfortune to not be born rich?

(And yeah, those questions are all rhetorical. I know why. It’s just too depressing to say right now.)

I have no experience being you, so please take whatever I say with a grain of salt and a large portion of “he means well, even if he’s ignorant . . . ” That said, what normally makes you feel calm and happy? Do that. Do things look like utter shit right now? Most definitely, but I think it will get better eventually. Or we’ll all grow old and croak and someone else can deal with this. We in the wonketariat (sp?) may not know you in-person, but we still care about you. Take some deep breaths, and if possible, hug someone. And maybe grab some orange play-doh, shape a Trump head, and smash it with a hammer.

It doesn’t work for everyone, but for me, a long walk alone somewhere quiet, then later a long hug, does wonders. That, and I’ve accepted that I can’t change shit, and that in 2 years, assuming everything is still crap, I can fuck off to New Zealand and hang out with kiwis ‘n stuff and hopefully avoid everything American for the rest of my life.

It’s probably one of the reasons I’m here, so I can try to put it out of my mind for a while. Of course, the Xanax helps.

The only advice I can really give is this: Stick around. It’ll piss off your enemies.

    • Angela Ruzzo

What helps me in situations like yours is to find a group that is worse off and help them. I volunteered at an animal shelter for a while, it was very soothing and rewarding. I also volunteer at a homeless shelter and a food bank when I am able to. Helping people gives the brain a big boost of Seratonin, AND it pisses off Republicans, AND I get to hang out with people who share my values, so that’s three treats in one. There is always someone worse off than you, and there is always someone you can help, even if they are not aware you are helping because all you are doing is stocking the shelves at the food pantry. If it takes your mind off your evil family for a few hours, it will help you as well.

Also exercise. When I was in serious distress a few years ago, I rode my bicycle on a trail for several hours whenever I could. It really helped clear my mind, and I slept better.

Your local paving company should have an abundance of tar. As for the feathers, either pluck your chickens, murder that old down vest from ’78 that you still have in the back of the closet but never wear, or purchase some feather pillows in bulk. My chickens would be a bit pissed if I plucked, so it’s off to Costco for the feather pillows. I’m still hoping the vest will come back into style.

How convenient this happens just a school districts are finalizing budgets for the next fiscal year. My autistic son is using the Katie Beckett Waiver which allow families that make a little too much money to receive Medicaid for their child. It was a law (?) brought about by a family in Texas who wanted to keep their disabled child, Katie, at home rather than have her institutionalized. Again, because it’s much less expensive to receive private quality therapies than live-in assembly line care in large institutions. Needless to say the child gets to remain in the care of a loving family as well. As far as I know, not all, but many States use the Waiver. Another issue are the Special Ed. Aides. They are so important for children, like mine, who need their support to attend the general ed. classes rather than be shut up in one room all day receiving limited curriculum. Absolutely time to call my Senator. Inclusion is a Civil Right!

I used to work in a group home for autistic & severely disabled young men. One of them, when upset, would yell, “FUUUUCCCKKKEERRSSS!” over & over again. I feel like I have become him.

  • Nockular cavity

You know the fucking deplorable basketeers are going to be screaming “LOL gas the useless eaters!” at every goddam opportunity.

  • ANNG14

And you just know there is a tax cut for the wealthy in there.
“The love of money is the root of all evil.”
Who moves money more than the wealthy and big business, who the Republican Party serves?

    • ahughes798

The Dems are right behind them. Their benefits are guaranteed, too.

      • Angela Ruzzo

The Dems can hardly refuse their benefits. I wouldn’t if I was one of them. I do not personally have to worry about the AHCA, but I still care about people who do. This is called empathy and compassion.

        • ahughes798

I care about the people who are stuck with the AHCA, too. But if the Dems had really wanted to stand on principle, and wanted to show they actually care about their constituents, they would have voted no on their benefits, and gone out and applied for them like everybody else has to do. And then paid for them out of their own pocket, because senators and congressthings range from wealthy to super wealthy.

          • Angela Ruzzo

The Republicans would have twisted that around to read “See how bad Obamacare is? Even Democrats in Congress refuse to use it!”

          • ahughes798

Sadly, you are probably right vis a vis optics, but I really think they voted to keep their benefits because those benefits are the cream of the crop.

          • Angela Ruzzo

I would have done the same thing. BUT I would then have gone out and shouted at every opportunity “I voted to keep these benefits because Obamacare gives us the BEST benefits. Top of the line. I wouldn’t use anything else. And the Republicans like them too, so why do they want to keep them for themselves but take them away from everyone else?” The Dems did not do that, or else they didn’t do it often enough, or maybe they whispered. Or maybe they shouted, but the media didn’t report it. I don’t know which it was, but they certainly weren’t shouting where I could hear them. Where the fuck is Bernie????

          • ahughes798

I don’t think the Dems, or Bernie, said a damn thing, as they learned absolutely nothing from the last election. Nothing.

          • Angela Ruzzo

They might have, but if they did, it didn’t get reported loudly. Although 15 minutes after I wrote the above, I saw Bernie being interviewed on a news program, but I had the TV muted so I didn’t hear what he said.

          • Chris

You do realize that they do right? Most get it thru the DC exchange. Before you feel the urge to dump on Democrats, maybe a few facts would be in order? You do know Sanders gets his in the same place as the Democrats?

          • ahughes798

Good for Bernie, who I didn’t even mention! I’m not a Bern-bot. I’m a disgusted Democrat. Wanted to get that out of the way, right away. Since when do congressthings and Senators get their health insurance through the ACA? What did they do before the ACA? I recall hearing, really recently, about their sweet, sweet health benefits. Doesn’t sound like the ACA to me.

          • Chris

You might want to check the source of the ‘sweet, sweet deal’ you think they currently have. While they used to have an unbelievable deal they are now included in the ACA. Some, like Ted Cruz is covered by his wife’s policy.

Before you whine about how disgruntled you are about the Democratic Party, maybe you could tell me about your long and active involvement with the Democratic Party and your years of service and activism in the party that haven’t had any positive outcome.

          • ahughes798

I’ve been working with and for my local Dems for 25 years or so, no matter where I have lived. Phone banking, stuffing envelopes, giving money, etc. Is that enough for me to have an opinion?

          • Chris

Yes. Now why haven’t you with all that effort not tried to engage for the changes you want? Do you only show up at election time or do you show for the monthly meetings? Volunteer for committees?

          • ahughes798

Yes. All of the above. NOW do I get to complain?

      • ANNG14

Dems aren’t pushing tax cuts for the wealthy.

        • ahughes798

Very true. But they sure as hell made sure they kept their cadillac health plans.

          • ANNG14

Dems aren’t trying to keep their Cadillac health coverage while taking away your health coverage.

    • Keith Taylor

Then too the same man from Nazareth said, according to the Gospels anyway, “Ye cannot serve God and Mammon.” Mammon being the deity of material wealth. But then we’re now living in an age in which a television preacher whose name, no kidding, is Creflo A. Dollar, can thrive without getting laughed off the airwaves by gales of incredulous derisive laughter from left-wingers and right-wingers alike.
I dunno. Maybe the fundamentalists do have something, to a degree. Maybe Armageddon and the Judgement ARE overdue. Just not for the reasons they tout.

  • kaydenpat

Love the fetus. Hate the child. Example eleventymillion.

  • Karen Shocket

Please can you publish a rebuttal to congresswoman cathy mcmorris rodgers, who is using her child with down syndrome to tout the AHCA. Many congressmen are sharing her article to validate their own vote.

    • Angela Ruzzo

Cathy Rodgers is defending her tribe, i.e. the white upper-middle class. She earns a lot of money and is guaranteed good health insurance. She has a stable 2-parent family. Comparing her unfortunate child’s situation to the real-life situation of real-world real people is comparing apples to oranges. She has no empathy, unlike Mr. Kimmel who, although quite wealthy, does understand the problems that real people face. What is even worse is that she might actually know that she is privileged, and does not care.

  • Angela Ruzzo

Yes, I called my senators. Senator Roy Blunt is an asshole of galactic proportions. The size of the suppository that Senator Blunt would need to clear his body of bullshit is unimaginable. The lies that roll off the lips of his staff, if placed end-to-end, would reach the Andromeda Galaxy. Nevertheless, I persisted.

I also called my Representative, dear, sweet, little, white, Vicky Hartzler who betrayed every woman in her district, and also the poors. Vicky’s bio says she grew up on a farm, where “Vicky learned the value of hard work, family values, love of country and a reliance on faith to guide her in life.” She also “works hard every day to combat the executive overreach of unelected bureaucrats” She remains committed to “preserving the sanctity of life and working to protect traditional family values.” Needless to say, I did not vote for her.

I asked her staff how she can say she is committed to preserving the sanctity of life when she has helped to eliminate health care for 24 million people and condemned them to an early grave, following bankruptcy court. I told her staff she was a murderer. I got to say it twice before they hung up on me. They are not very efficient. It was fun. I’d like to do it again.

    • Vagenda and Pee-ara

Hey, at least your senator answers the phone. Miss Lindsey has a recorded message, and Tim (the GOP’s black friend) Scott just took his phone off the hook.

      • Chris

Marco Rubio, depending on which office either doesn’t answer or tells you to leave a message but you can’t because of full mail boxes.

        • Angela Ruzzo

That full mailbox thing is sometimes real, and sometimes they deliberately fill it up with messages. This is why I always follow up phone calls with snail mail letters. People don’t write letters much anymore, so when they get one, it usually gets read.

        • Vagenda and Pee-ara

Why does this not surprise me one little bit?

      • Angela Ruzzo

That is sadly very true. But I have friends in local government and various non-profits. . . I do not ask where they get the phone numbers they give out. I always follow up with real letters, which they have more trouble ignoring.

    • Mike Steele

Lady MS: Try this – saw Rep. Sean Maloney on TRMS tonight. (R) Faso in district next to his made a VERY public promise to sick constituent that he would not endanger her healthcare, then voted for AHCA. Since he will not respond to enraged callers, they’re phoning Maloney’s district nearby. Maloney has decided to ‘adopt’ Faso’s district & will be holding a town hall there to given citizens the answers they seek. Tonight I phoned Elijah Cummings to ask if he’d adopt Delmarva from our deadbeat dad Rep. Harris. This could start a trend:)

      • Angela Ruzzo

Great idea! I don’t think it will work where I live. I live in a blue dot surrounded by a sea of red. There is nobody to adopt us. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/030a4ceeafb98c454994c41e73330cbfdf0a6b178d220989854771943f372b53.jpg

        • Mike Steele

Feel your pain – aside from poultry, our little red peninsula relies primarily on the generosity of our blue bay and ocean cradle, about to be decimated by the gilded (R)s they re-elect. It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature.

          • Angela Ruzzo

She does like to strike back, doesn’t she?

  • MisterShoebox

I have ADD and numerous other learning disabilities (Also diagnosed as Gifted, so…anyhoo.) Without programs like these, I would never have graduated high school, or at least I wouldn’t have had the help I needed.

And the people who voted for this…I am too angry to say anything that won’t get me banned for excessive cruelty, so I’m just going to say that they are just…they are just indecent and cruel people.

    • Keith Taylor

I’m certain all of us reading WONKETTE, except the densest trolls, have the imagination to guess what you mean and are now adding lurid savage maledictions of their own to what you’re thinking. I’ll stop there because I too have no wish to get banned for excessive cruelty.
      But power to you.

  • Kooolest G

hmmmm, I wonder what saint sarah of wasilla thinks about this?

  • Vagenda and Pee-ara

Well, as long as they aren’t denied Bibles, I think this will all work out fine.

  • James Yakura

Okay, in a week I should have time to head down to DC. Can someone get me a list of representatives who passed this?

On a completely unrelated note, has anyone got any votes they aren’t using? I suddenly need a large number of them. For reasons. That most certainly do not involve unspeakable cruelty.

If there really was a Dog, they’d all have been struck sown by now. Thanks for magnificent graphic, though!

    • If only…

I have close fam that have varying degrees of ADHD and/or Asperger’s. Education/early intervention programs are really important.*

My brother had cerebral palsy. My parents gave him the best life they could, taking him from one doctor to another for various treatments as his condition worsened. He spent his last days upstate in an institution.

My dad sold his half of the business to his partner (dad was the inventor, his partner had the money) to pay my brother’s medical bills, then spent the rest of his short life working for corporations that owned his inventions. To join their ranks, he had to sign papers that they owned all patents based on his creations.

His partner sold out to Celanese in the 1960s for millions; we never saw a penny. The chemical companies dad worked for poisoned him. Resin dyes collapsed his circulatory system, and on top of diabetes, his body broke down. He died of his second heart attack about three months before what would have been his 52nd birthday, leaving mom a widow at 50. Of course, this was before OSHA and the ADA (dad spent his last few years in a wheelchair or on wooden legs, a victim of diabetic amputations).

One of his inventions was (he was a color engineer/color chemist in vinyl and other plastics) was a plastic surface that wouldn’t show fingerprints. He called it Crackle. Its descendants are on virtually every appliance and other plastic surface in your home, from your toaster oven to your desktop. I, his daughter, am broke and struggling. Blame it on medical bills.

One good thing: Our insurance broker lived down the street; lovely woman. She sold dad a life insurance policy that paid off the mortgage when he died, so mom owned her home outright. She worked for the postal service, first as a clerk, then secretary to the postal services officer, then secretary to the postmaster, and finally as EEOC commissioner. She had to retire when Reagan broke the air traffic controllers strike, which had nothing to do with PATCO. He (well, his administration) wanted to prove to the postal workers that they could break a federal union.

I don’t know if our country is going to survive this latest systematic attack on our freedoms. I do try to keep hope alive, but sometimes it feels illusory.

  • Jeff Mc Donald

Just to be clear, this is still Obama fault, right?

      Who kidnapped Lori?

  • So, am I reading this right? There will be a cap on what is provided to each state? So, the super-poor states, the ones whose population tend to use these programs most, will be most severely effected? You know, those states who swung the map for this presidency? That seems smrt.
