And now it’s time to get to work

Democrat Jon Ossoff fell just short of an outright win in the primary election for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District last night, getting 48.1 percent of the vote in an 18-candidate open primary to replace Tom Price after Price was chosen by Donald Trump to ruin American healthcare. The closest Republican candidate — of eleven Rs in the race — was Karen Handel, who got 19.8 percent. Since Ossoff didn’t get 50 percent, he and Handel will face each other in a run-off election June 20. Donald Trump was simply over the moon at the election results, taking credit for a Republican “win” in the race that won’t be settled for two months:

In Trumpian math, a 28.6 point win over the closest Republican is actually a loss. Or maybe Trump simply assumes Handel will now automatically win in June since she won’t be running against any other Republicans. Not mentioned by Trump: Handel ran as an establishment-type Republican, distancing herself from Trump policies whenever possible, while the Republicans who most closely allied themselves with Trump didn’t win cacadoody:

Bob Gray made allegiance to Donald Trump the cornerstone of his campaign, and he may have suffered for it. He got about 10 percent of the vote and came under a barrage of criticism over his pro-Trump bona fides.

And Bruce LeVell, head of Trump’s diversity coalition, got less than 1 percent of the vote. He also put Trump at the center of his campaign, and even made a last-minute trek to the White House to visit with the president, who didn’t endorse any candidate in the race.

Ossoff’s numbers looked great in the early going, which ultimately wasn’t enough to keep him over 50 percent; for all you Wonkers who were absolutely sure in the comments that the fix was in, it’s worth remembering that the earliest returns skewed Ossoff’s way since they were from early voting and absentee ballots, which tend to favor Democrats, so stop your grumping about tampering with the vote, OK? Makes us sound like Trump, and we don’t want to sound like Trump, ever. As the stats freaks at FiveThirtyEight point out, it’s pretty much the same pattern as in last year’s general election nationwide:

Hillary Clinton cleaned up among early voters in key swing states that she nevertheless went on to lose. The fact remains that a vote cast on election day is worth the same as a vote cast early. So add the Georgia 6 Round 1 results to our ever-growing pile of reasons to take early vote results with a salt mine’s worth of salt. It’s not predictive.

Instead, let’s focus on the fact that Ossoff pulled off a first-place finish in a very red district where he wasn’t supposed to have much of a chance, and instead, he was far ahead of the closest Republican. Yes, Handel is going to have a much better chance in a two-way race, but Ossoff is still going to benefit from lots of support and money from national Democrats. And Handel is going to be saddled with the enthusiastic support of Donald Trump, who simply won’t be able to keep himself from loudly supporting her; in suburban Atlanta, that may turn out to be more helpful for Ossoff. And Crom only knows what sort of madness Trump will manage in his next two months in office. Again, FiveThirtyEight’s Harry Enten offers some statistical solace about the political shifts in this district:

Clinton had already greatly improved on previous Democrats’ performance in Georgia 6. She lost to Trump there by only 1.5 percentage points. Former President Barack Obama lost the district by 23 points in 2012, as did Democratic congressional candidate Rodney Stooksbury in 2016.

Nothing’s guaranteed, and it’s going to be a tough fight with all the money that will now be going to Handel, but Ossoff is the guy people are enthusiastic about. An outright win would have been best, sure, but until last week, nobody was even dreaming of that. The conventional wisdom was that he’d pull off an exciting first-place win in the low to mid forties, and he did even better than that. Jon Ossoff would have liked a win. With the votes still being tallied, he was pretty sure last night was no loss:

There is no doubt that this is already a remarkable victory for the ages. No matter what the outcome is tonight, whether we take it all or whether we fight on, we have defied the odds, we have shattered expectations, we are changing the world […] we will be ready to fight on and win in June if it is necessary. And there is no amount of dark-money, superPAC negative advertising that can overcome real grass-roots energy like this. So bring it on.

Doesn’t sound like a guy who’s discouraged one bit. Time to get to work, yes?

    • Vincent Ricola

I agree. GOTV and educating new voters on the process is the key.

I worked the polls for the presidential race, there were many older people had never voted before and were very embarrassed to have to ask for help. This should not happen in 2017. The Dems need to start infiltrating communities and showing people the details on how to vote (dummy ballots, poll etiquette, what to expect when they show up, ect) – not just getting names on a list and robocalling/emailing them to death. Once people who have never voted get over the initial hump, they will continue to vote and that’s when Dems start winning.

      • Shibusa

Yes GOTV won Nevada for Hillary (and Catherine Cortez-Masto).

Paper ballots only. I’m willing to sacrifice a few pine trees to save our country and the entire friggin’ planet.

    • jesterpunk

We can do online banking, online bill pay, online tax returns and pretty much everything except voting securely online without having to put on pants or leave the house. Why cant we do voting online or even in person with no issues and be able to verify the vote was counted?

      • VirginiaLady

Google the recent FAFSA/IRS hack. That’s why I wouldn’t trust it at all. In some cases the old way is the best simply because it’s hack proof. Honestly, as long as the GOP has a hand in counting the votes there is always going to be doubt.

        • jesterpunk

I know there are some issues with doing things online but for the most part it is pretty secure. The main issue is the GOP doesnt want people that will vote for democrats voting. Even paper ballots are not guaranteed with them (see Florida in 2000 and Georgia in 2008 and 2012 for some recent examples) but online or mail in voting like Oregon does should be an option and it should be possible instead of hoping your vote is counted.

          • Courser_Resistance

Colorado also too. We do mail-in ballots for everything except for small municipal elections (that don’t have to go through the state, just the county)

          • VirginiaLady

Agree. It seems we’re screwed no matter what.

      • zerosumgame0005

without a paper trail the is no verification

        • jesterpunk

So how hard would it be to print a receipt showing who you voted for and if your vote was counted? You can verify in Oregon your mail in vote was received.

          https://secure.sos.state.or.us/orestar/vr/showVoterSearch.do

You also get a receipt when you pay your taxes online or when you do anything with the DMV online. So it really shouldnt be that hard to do the same with online or mail in voting. As for the paper trail you dont get anything when you vote in person using paper ballots.

You still have to worry about republicans throwing your voting registration in the trash.

just saying on-line voting would not put an end to fraud

          • jesterpunk

Yeah there is no way to eliminate all fraud but there should be an easier way then filling out a paper form and hoping its read and counted correctly.

          • Courser_Resistance

In CO we tear off a stub on our ballot. That’s our ballot number. If you sign up for texts, you will be notified that your ballot has been received and another one telling you that your ballot has been counted. One guy really wanted to check it out, so went to the media. His county clerk was happy to show him how his ballot how it went through the system.

No method will show who you voted for, because your vote is confidential. No one know who you voted for except you.

And a lot of them find Karen Handel disgusting, as evidenced by her only getting 36% of the Republican vote. People still need to work to get out as many D voters as possible, but Ossoff’s chances are exceptionally good now.

        • Poorly Behaved Pérsistanista

Chin up, Snarky, remember that Trump won this district by something like 24 points so Ossoff’s 48% is fucking spectacular.

          • Shalimar

Trump actually only won it by around 7. Price won it by 28. But yes, Ossoff is in a commanding position. Even if only a few percent of the non-Handel voters decide they can’t vote for her and stay home, Ossoff wins.

in a lot of races, the EV numbers will hold because we’re such a gerrymandered nation, but in high turnout elections there is definitely more of a chance for things to swing. most special elections barely manage the turnout of a city ballot measure or a constitutional election–this one managed over 50%. and, yes, it was a win.

speaking of constitutional elections: hey people in the SOUTH and WEST! a lot of us have constitutional elections this November. hope you’ve been paying attention to all those joint resolutions and not just to the red meat because they are PORTENT and not that many people vote in those elections…seriously, it’s like 2-5% most of the time. it’s pitiful. • Jgb979

It sucks he didn’t win outright….

But this was Newt Gingrich’s district. (Not entirely sure if included within the 6th) but Cobb county is the home of Stone Mountain – and by extension historical racism. The last democrat to even be competitive in the 6th was 1979 (a conservative probably racist southern democrat.

The fact that he CAN win, when Tom Price beat a token democrat FIVE MONTHS AGO 61%-38% is almost unprecedented.

    • Wednesday

Cobb County is NOT the home of Stone Mountain. Stone Mountain is in DeKalb County, which is partially in the Georgia 6th, but not entirely. And DeKalb usually swings Democratic overall.

The 6th is a weird mix of voters and if you try to predict the outcome by painting them all as racists, you’re really going to miss the mark. If you look at the breakout by candidate, there’s a lot of encouraging signs that Ossof could win. I’m just hoping that at some point, Handel’s history with Susan B. Komen is turned back on her and used to crush her chances.

I lived in Stone Mountain for seven years, six of which I was married to ex-h#2, a major asshole. I don’t blame Stone Mountain tho. He was raised in FL.

          • LadyLaz

I have one serious ex asshole in acworth. I too lived in DeCatur and then Stone Mountain. I currently reside somewhere toward Athens ;)

          • Ω cynmac will never surrender

That’s cool. My brother lives off 316 in Lawrenceville.

          • LadyLaz

We will never surrender. Evah :)

      • Maclare

        Decatur shout-out!

        • Ω cynmac will never surrender

          And you know this!

  • Relativicus

But it is a loss. Or rather, it’s a win in that he’s won an opportunity to square off against a pretty average, and familiar, Republican in a red red district, which he’s almost guaranteed to lose (never say “never,” except when saying “never say ‘never'”, but still…).

    • Leliel

Except people hate her. And that 20 points is something impossible without winning over some conservatives.

Stop awfulizing and see it for what it it-a long shot that suddenly became shorter.

      • Relativicus

I certainly acknowledge he has a chance to win, but it’s not a very good chance. And nothing that happened yesterday shrunk his odds. His sole, realistic chance was to be elected outright yesterday.

I didn’t invent gerrymandering or the Republican mindset, I just acknowledge the facts of their existence.

        • ~ ☆ míkhαílα ☆ ~ 【忠実反抗】

A “not very good chance” is still a chance, ‘specially in GA-6. Trump isn’t liked there AT ALL (and neither is Karen!)

          • Relativicus
          • ~ ☆ míkhαílα ☆ ~ 【忠実反抗】

With Jon doing as well as he did, yes.

          • Relativicus

Yesterday was a race of basically one Democrat against a bunch of others. June is a head-to-head match-up. He will lose by 1%, 20%, whatever%. And there are no seats in the House for “moral victors”.

        • Leliel

Yeah, I’d like to see your data. And your assumptions do nothing to disprove my point: The facts are that kind of win is impossible without people crossing the isle, so either your assumption is mistaken or imaginary people can vote now.

Not that I have anything against Bing-Bong, mind you.

  • Doug Langley

“Hillary Clinton cleaned up among early voters in key swing states that she nevertheless went on to lose.”

Another reminder how Comey’s meddling threw the election.

  • Ω cynmac will never surrender

Dammit. Dammit All. More fucking GOP fuckwit ads for 2 months. I may lose my everloving mind.

  • Me not sure

Karen Handel is pretty close to being Georgia’s Sarah Palin. She won election to the Secretary of State’s office and quit after half of her term to run for Governor, losing to
crooked Nathan (Art of The? ) Deal. As Secretary of State she worked to restrict voting rights, and while working at the Susan Komen Foundation urged them to stop supporting Planned Parenthood, resulting in her being let go. She also was for Obamacare while at Komen and did an about face after leaving, calling the ACA “an intrusion into the lives of Americans.” In short, she can still be beaten, and should be.

    • nightmoth

She’s a jerk, but she’s a Republican. We had a Republican tell us yesterday that he “votes for the party, not the person.” Never forget that this is the fuckwit South and Republicans outnumber Democrats. Now I’m gonna send Ossoff another 10 bucks.

      • Me not sure

He’ll need it. The winnowing down will bring in the fat cats

      • cessnadriver

They are all like that. Trumpita, st. ronnie, the talibunny, ect are all indefensible.

When libertardians try their one talking point (both parties are the same!) I always ask them-what democrat would put dumb tony on the Supreme Court of pick Quayle or the Talibunny as a running mate?

    • Maclare

      Accurate on all points!

      • Me not sure

        Blush! Thanks.

  • ken_kukec

The glass is 19.8% full, is the way the Donald likes to look at it.

    • cessnadriver

      Most of that is backwash.

  • norcalOG

By June, if Republican history is any guide, Osoff should be known Kim Jon O and will have been shown to be working on a plan to help his cousin–that crazy fat kid–plant nuclear weapons in Okefenokee.

  • Bitter Scribe

Bruce LeVell, head of Trump’s diversity coalition, got less than 1 percent of the vote.

A black Trump supporter who runs for office is really in a tough spot. Black voters see him as a sellout, white Trump opponents see him as a sellout, and white Trump supporters, with their definitely not racist ECONOMIC ANXIETY, see him as a black person.

It’s almost enough to make you feel sorry for him, if only he weren’t such a piece of shit.

    • Paperless Tiger

Those black white supremists are the worst.

  • OrdinaryJoe

Trumpublican Win = Lose the popular vote but declare yourself the victor.

    • Erala Contratista

Lose the popular vote AND have both your puppets flame out is a real Trumpublican win!
Declaring yourself the victor is the limp parsley garnish on that hot mess.

  • ~ ☆ míkhαílα ☆ ~ 【忠実反抗】

Alls I’m gonna say is this:

LET’S HELP AMAZING JON OSSOFF FLIP THE BIG BIRD TO DONALD TRUMP AND KAREN HANDEL, PLEASE.

  • Marceline

Now is the time to be extra vigilant about right wing shenanigans in this district. They already had some voting machines go missing. It will be interesting to see what kind of dirty tricks Repubs use on what was a safe district.

    • cessnadriver

Some people were not allowed to vote or cast provisionals…

      • Lamashtar

Yeah, I’m not as sanguine as the Fearless Writer. If Dems do so well in absentee ballots, why is that? Is it because Repubs go in for voter suppression? They fucking admitted it in North Carolina. There’s a voter assistance lady in Georgia who’s been targetted over and over by a jackass prosecuting attorney. People she knows say they feel she is being used as an example, to tell them what will happen if they get above themselves.

And there are a lot of questions about those electronic machines that can be opened easily and have no record if they are altered. I’m not just talking about GOP dirty tricks. The Russian govt is operating like an international crime syndicate and they have infested our society, putting their money into all our civil servants on both sides. They have been approaching our society as if they are at war with it. A lot of dirty things were done in the 2016 election and fiddling with electronic voter machines is kids stuff.

  • Yr. Gma

This thread is Eyore. He’s gonna lose. Nothing good ever happens to us. Don’t get your hopes up. That attitude will surely help us win in 2018!

    • cessnadriver

Special elections and primaries tend to be heavy repig skkkum voters. Ossof has some momentum and an idiot opponent.

Will Michele Bachman campaign for her? Maybe the talibunny? Zombie Phylis Schaffley?

      • Lamashtar

Please, oh please, let Donnie stump for her personally!

  • mardam422

“Win” doesn’t start with “R”. Not even a big one.

  • norcalOG

Rep. Boris Badenov, R-Moscow, had some advice for Osoff. “I tell him to shut up his mouth. Don’t criticize Fearless Leader if you know what good for you. Remember what happen last time Georgians mess with him.”

  • CeeQ

    Hope beckons.

  • LadyLaz

He’s feisty. We need some more like this.

Not that Abedine shouldn’t have kicked his butt out the door, but I wish we could have someone as mouthy and brawly as Weiner without all the “sexting” stupidity.

    • Lamashtar

I remember being enthusiastic about John Edwards. Dems have a sex problem. :(

      • LadyLaz

Hoo boy. Politicians – GOP and dnc -have a sex problem, period. At least ours don’t attack underaged children (see hastert rule$

        • Lamashtar

..Someone just reminded me of Gary Hart. If only those were the only scandals these days!

  • Sharon Cooper

Please. Trump congratulates himself for the sun rising in the morning. Him taking credit for a race that the Republicans barely made a dent in? Sounds like something his narcissistic, dementia-riddled lazy ass would do.

    • cessnadriver

Trumpita claimed he won the trumpita university case.

  • Finnabar87

Handel took over the Susan Kommen foundation, promptly ruined it as a brand, and was forced to resign a few years ago.

Repig skkkum whine about making things political while making everything political.

Like science and the shape of the Earth. Scientists disagree, you know.

  • Maclare

So a bunch of people went to vote, but because the district crosses several counties, they were turned away. Several of my neighbors are pissed. Democrats really need to more education about that.

  • Carpe Vagenda
    • ya know, Bernie, I love you and all, but compared to anyone running Republican, even fucking WVA Muchinwhateverhisface is friggin progressive

      • Lamashtar

Seriously! Vermonters need to learn that Georgia has different sort of progressivism.

    • cessnadriver

      Bernie can learn.

      • Carpe Vagenda

        I’d like to see that.

        • cessnadriver

          The Bern will come around.

          • Carpe Vagenda

            Looking forward to it :)

  • awww, but it is fun to make conspiracy theories all in your head and speculate endlessly about them, Dok.
    Just ask anyone on Fox!

  • Jeff Mc Donald

Look, winning isn’t when you actually win, it’s when you claim to win and your supporters believe it, umkay?

  • Celtic_Gnome

Ossoff needs him some Obama momentum for the showdown. Barack and Michelle, vacation’s over.

    • cessnadriver

Barack taking Karen Handel apart should be glorious.

  • cessnadriver

Hitler won WW II because there were 4 blocks of Berlin that hadn’t been taken by the Allies when he forced the latter to sign a peace agreement!

The Japanese won because they signed an unconditional surrender rather than an unconditional surrender!

    Winning!

  • persistently_resistant_gayby

    NEXT UP – MONTANA AT-LARGE!

  • SeeTrain65

Now, if Ossoff and the Dems remind everyone what kind of person Karen Handel is, he can win.
