Hey, remember when we had that big election we won by three million votes, but Republicans get a three million vote head start in our country, because that is the only way things can be fair? (Also, better make sure Wyoming gets one senator for each citizen because something something “minority rights” but LOL not like minority minorities, can you even imagine???)

And then remember we were so sad about it we didn’t even lift a finger to help a guy running for Senate in Louisiana, even though if he’d won we could have felt a tiny bit better? And then he didn’t win, which was just as well because these anti-depressants weren’t going to OD on themselves?

And remember how we have a bunch of special elections RIGHT FUCKING NOW to carve a little piece out of Republicans’ fairly historic House margin? And remember that we are not depressed anymore because we got on our FIGHTIN SHOES????

Yes, you are nodding wisely, I DO remember! I am wearing fightin shoes RIGHT NOW they are cute lil ballet flats because I am a homogay.

Well forget about your shoes and go find your wallets, because today we are fighting WITH MONEY.

THIS GUY

(The GOP spent one MILLION dollars to call Ossoff a nerd in that video. Cool story bro!)

Number one, you’ve got Mr. Jon Ossoff, that nice young man in Georgia running in a real red district. Do you care that his district is red? Then you forgot to listen to HOWARD DEAN and his FIFTY STATE STRATEGY, which, science fact, is the last time people weren’t complaining about Democrats losing so many seats!

Ossoff is running for the seat vacated by a veritable Debbil, Tom Price, who left Congress to, per the executive order President Donald Trump signed, “exercise all authority and discretion available to them to waive, defer, grant exemptions from, or delay the implementation of any provision or requirement of the Act that would impose a fiscal burden on any State or a cost, fee, tax, penalty, or regulatory burden on individuals, families, healthcare providers, health insurers, patients, recipients of healthcare services, purchasers of health insurance, or makers of medical devices, products, or medications.”

In Wonkerese? Price was executive ordered to RATFUCK OUR OBAMACARE and SHIT ON ITS FACE.

Let’s replace him in Congress with this handsome nerd!

Go get your wallet and keep it out.

Ossoff’s polling nicely in the Georgia 6th, but it’s a jungle primary and there Can Be Only One, or say another nerd quote here.

THIS OTHER GUY!

Who’s this very short man standing next to your editrix and also the boss of you, Donna Rose? WE TRICKED YOU, THAT GUY IS SITTING DOWN! Rob Quist, running for Montana’s sole Congressional seat, recently vacated by Master and Commander Grifter (and new Interior secretary) Ryan Zinke, is actually about 19 feet tall, and also? That dude is 69. (Nice.)

Was he nice? HE WAS! But somebody needs to teach him about that thing you do where you are talking to somebody and other people cluster around to also meet you and say hello and you DON’T IGNORE THEM but rather SAY HELLO AND ACKNOWLEDGE THEM before continuing with your initial conferee. Because we weren’t the only people who finally skittered away in embarrassment after like 10 minutes of standing there. It’s easy! Just look at them and smile so they know you know they’re FUCKING STANDING RIGHT THERE!

Does that matter in the grand scheme of things? No, but only because we’re predisposed to think he’s swell (and we succeeded when we tried to say hi the second time, and he was fun fun and also nice). But Liev Schreiber did that to us once (who?) and we’ve had a hate on for him ever since.

One fun thing about Quist’s race for Montana’s House seat is that the Republicans keep putting up Greg Gianforte, a billionaire carpetbagger who has managed to piss off Montana’s sportsmen with his hate for letting people fish up in his stream — river access is in our constitution or something, I don’t know, ask my husband, but the men take it very FOR SERIOUS — and he’s just awful and wouldn’t it be somethin’ if Montana — MONTANA — had a Democratic gov, senator, and Congressman? Boy howdy jehosephat, and other country talk here!

MONEY FOR QUIST DO IT DO IT NOW.

Also, we told him our readers sent him a bunch of money, because we are so big and fancy and important, so DON’T MAKE A LIAR OF YOU AND OF ME.

Now you have your wallet out, gee, that is so handy, wonder if there’s anyone else you feel like giving money to, OH OH OH IT ME!

Have you #paidthefuckup? Then you may Open Thread!

So why can’t we vote for Donna Rose?

  • TJ Barke

Pro tip Dems, everyone fucking hates regressive republicans, so if you run democrats that actually try, and make substantive promises, and you actually back them, there’s a good shot they might win, and we can maybe patch the hole and bail out the sinking ship that is Trumpmerica.

    • C4TWOMAN

And put an end to the United States of Russia.

  • Villago Delenda Est

Quist looks much better at 69 than a certain cheeto-faced shitgibbon does at 70.

  • disqus_lWwzrwNaw6

Wait wait: Democrats aren’t actually expected to VOTE, are we? Sure, we outnumber the Republicans, but only in the opinion polls, right? Not the actual “voting” polls where you have to register, and go out someplace and vote, and everything, even if you don’t feel like it?

I thought we were just supposed to bitch and whine and wait for some Macedonian teenager to pit us against each other on social media (it’s way fun to be more pure than others!) unless we thought a particular candidate was cute and fun enough for us to get up off the couch and go to the polls, in which case we would vote and party like there was no tomorrow, because, fun!

But just “vote”-voting is way hard, no fun, no fair.

    • JMP

Also, if the Democratic candidate isn’t absolutely perfect in every way, aren’t liberal voters supposed to just take their ball and go home, or vote for some third party spoiler idiot, because helping elect Republicans send a message?

Spent a few hours this weekend phonebanking for James Thompson, an awesome Dem who’s running for the Kansas seat formerly held by Mike Pompeo. Check him out! He got the nomination over an anti-choice favorite, because people were pissed about said anti-choiceness, and then in a debate Thompson called out his horrible opponent Estes for repeating those “Planned Parenthood sells baby parts” lies. And he is pro-wind energy and ACA! And public schools! And boo Sam Brownback!

    • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

Keep strong and get that polling info out. Kansas is ground zero and testing ground for Republican voting rights rat-fucking.

  • Angela Ruzzo

I am tired of voting for people with perfect, pink skin, thick straight hair, and a set of perfect, white teeth. You know who you are, folks. I want to start a new party. I will call it the REAL PEOPLE Party, and you can only run for office if you still have acne scars, have at least one grandparent who is not a WASP, if you wore braces for at least two years, if your parents did not give you a car when you were 16, and if the rent for your first apartment was half of the paycheck you were earning at the time. Extra points if you lost both front top teeth at the same time in 1st grade, and have a photo to prove it.

    • hendenburg2

Would losing the top front teeth in Kindergarten be acceptable?
What about a year and a quarter with braces?
And would missing Junior prom & all Sadie Hawkinses be acceptable in exchange for Senior Prom?

      • Angela Ruzzo

Yes, you are definitely acceptable, with a waiver. I decided to take out the Senior Prom bit and replace it with apartment rent. Senior Prom sounded too 1950’s after I wrote it.

      • Angela Ruzzo

I will give you a waiver. Eight years of braces? What a nightmare. I only wore them for 2-1/2 years. To be honest, the rubber bands I wore for a year were 10X worse than the braces. I still have a scar inside my lower lip from the metal spring on my braces that was forcing my lower front teeth apart.

        • Jennifer R

Look at the richie rich who could afford dental care. I had a huge gap between my teeth, and the only thing my parents could do was to believe the dentist when he said if he cut some of my gums out the teeth would grow together.

          • Angela Ruzzo

Not rich. University of Missouri School of Dentistry with a 50% discount because my mother worked for the university. She worked overtime for two years to pay for it. I was a guinea pig for the 4th year dental students, and I think pictures of my teeth are in a textbook somewhere. Too bad about your gap, do you still have it?

          • Jennifer R

Yes I do, because that was a very bald faced lie the dentist told my parents. I also have these nifty channels straight to the roots of my front two teeth from missing a bunch of gumline now.

          • Angela Ruzzo

Ugh. Can anything be done about it? That is, anything that does not cost more than your mortgage? If my three bridges break, and they are 30 years old so that could happen any day now, it would cost $16,000 to replace them. Guess what insurance won’t pay for!!!

          • Jennifer R

At my income level, I couldn’t even have them pulled. (not that I need to, they don’t hurt enough for me to notice over anything else)

          • Angela Ruzzo

Well, rats, that’s awful. I finally found a sort-of semi-decent dental plan 2 years ago, which I would recommend to you, but it costs $58/month, which is not peanuts. It is with Ameritas, previously Spirit Dental. Have you looked into any nearby dental schools? They sometimes do pro bono work, especially if the case is interesting and unique.

          • Usedtobeyellerdawg

Mine too! I think it was because they were so bad, and eventually came out really good. I used to have the first mold they made of my mouth when they started. I got my first bands on my back teeth circa ten years old, and had the last permanent retainer removed when I was nineteen. I had that for about three years, and it just became an invisible part of my life, so I don’t know that that part actually counts.

          • Angela Ruzzo

I was congenitally missing 11 permanent teeth. They don’t get to see that in dental schools very often, so I was very popular with the students. It was kinda cool to be a 15-yr-old girl laying in a chair with a dozen cute, 20-something guys gathered around the table peering into your mouth. But then I started to wonder. . . why are all dentists male?

          • Biel_ze_Bubba

Holy crap – my daughter was missing two, and that was nightmarish enough. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/da7e8831692e2751c3aba6761b23eaab8e98829d723b7eb89be7da73d4ddadd7.jpg

          • Angela Ruzzo

Yep, looks familiar. I’m sorry to hear about your daughter. Is it fixed now?

If you look at it in a positive way, which I try to do, I was lucky, because 4 of my 11 missing teeth were Wisdom Teeth.

          • Biel_ze_Bubba

Implant on one side, but the one on the other failed to take – twice. She’s in no hurry to get her jaw drilled for a fourth time, so she’s got a bridge.
For a while, the X-ray image made for the coolest Facebook portrait ever. (Also too, more radiation than a lifetime of dentist visits, but the docs do love their toys.)
“Only” 7 major teeth missing is lucky? What was the ultimate solution for that?

          • Angela Ruzzo

It is a cool picture. I had a 360 degree x-ray of my skull from dental school days, but it was lost in a hurricane. It would make a nifty online ID image, if I still had it.

I have 3 bridges. Two on the top front (one on each side), plus one center bottom. Got them in 1987, cost $4000, group dental insurance paid 50%. Will cost $16,000 to replace today, and your average dental insurance has a $1000 to $1500 annual cap. I have stopped eating chewy or crunchy foods, as I live in fear of them breaking. Dentist told me in 1987 they would last 20 years, and it’s now 30 years. Medicare will cover most congenital birth defects, but WILL NOT cover dental birth defects. I asked why this is, was told it was because nobody had yet sued Medicare to force them to pay for dental birth defects. You might see my name in the headlines one day.

Check on the two front teeth. I also had pimples so bad when I was 13 that I looked like Steve Bannon does at 60. It lasted all school year.

      • Angela Ruzzo

Oooh, bad luck. I went to college with a guy whose entire body was covered with pimples. I don’t know what condition he had, but it must have truly ruined his teenage years.

        • Juan de Fuca

Yup. It was bad for awhile, then it all cleared up and haven’t had a pimple since I was about 17 or 18. No long term scarring or anything and you’d never know it today. But it was kinda rough going through that as a 13-14 year old. I looked like one of the nerdiest kids in school for sure but it’s funny to look back on it now.

        • janecita

I knew a guy like that in college! Was your guy’s name Ashley?

          • Angela Ruzzo

Sadly, I don’t remember his name. I’m 60. . . I’m lucky I remember my own name. They keep asking me for my phone number everywhere I go, and I hesitate, because I don’t call myself and I sometimes forget what it is. I’ve had a lot of phone numbers in my life, and the only one I never forget is the one I had as a child. The rest fade away as soon as I move and get a new one.

Job applications really throw me. I have had to fill in job applications that ask for the phone number of previous employers, AND the name and phone number of previous supervisors at each job. Like I can remember names and phone numbers from 30 or 40 years ago. I retired 2-1/2 years ago, and I have already forgotten my supervisor’s name. Sometimes they have online forms that require you to enter the month and DAY you started working somewhere. Jeeze, Louise, who remembers exactly what day of the month they started working 30 years ago! But if you don’t enter the day, the form blows up.

I had an aunt who could remember the phone numbers of everyone she ever knew going back 70 years. I don’t know how people do that. She should have worked for the IRS.

          • janecita

I’m 39, so is not the same guy. I’m really bad with names and phone numbers, it’s not a new thing, I’ve always been like that.

      • Angela Ruzzo

OK, you get a waiver. I have never fully understood the rental disparity thing. I mean, 600 square feet in NYC is intrinsically and inherently worth exactly the same as 600 square feet in Peoria, but capitalism says otherwise. They tried to explain this to me in Econ 101 in college, but my brain rejected the concept.

        • Biel_ze_Bubba

          Location, location, and . . . umm . . . I forget the third thing.

          • Angela Ruzzo

Been watching “Escape to the Country” on Netflix and YouTube, about UK city people looking for a country house. A 3-bed 1-bath cottage in Devonshire can cost $500,000 or more. Same house where I live would cost $100,000. Yeah, I know, the cottage is 350 years old and has beamed ceilings and two stone fireplaces and roses growing by the front door and Bonnie Prince Charlie hid in a barn next door, but it doesn’t have forced-air heat or an attached garage, and there are radiators in every place where you would want to put a piece of furniture, and you have to duck your head to go through all the doors, so I ask you! If I sold every single thing I owned, I could maybe afford a Bed Sitter in Manchester. Truth is, if I had the $500,000, I’d buy that cottage in Devon. The one with the Sea View. No Sea Views in Missouri, no matter how rich you are. It’s one of the things I think about often. . . that no one, rich or poor, gets a Sea View if they live in Missouri. It’s an egalitarian concept that pleases me.

          • Biel_ze_Bubba

No sea views for me either – but I do have a cool view down 3rd Avenue:

Very cool! I briefly lived on the 34th floor of a 55-story building in Chicago, and I looked south across the entire city and the Lake. It was beautiful at night, and I could watch games at Wrigley Field with binoculars if I wanted to (I didn’t). But Chicago is unfit for human habitation in the winter, so I left. I do miss that view, however. My current view is a small lake, with about 50 Canadian Geese living on it. It’s not bad. . . except the damn geese keep pooping all over my driveway.

Yeah, the Canadians have been inching towards this for a long while. Two comments:

      1) I suggest they raise the legal minimum age to 21 rather than the suggested 18, as legitimate studies show that dope (especially todays strong strains) can adversely effect not-quite-fully-developed brains; i.e.. dope isn’t necessarily good for kids.

      2) Smoke ’em if you got ’em!

      • h4rr4r

        Dope is heroin.

Strong strains BS is propoganda, you just smoke less.

        • Lascauxcaveman

Well, some people call heroin ‘dope’ but they’re all squares, man. As someone who’s smoked a little weed off and on since the late 70s, I can assure you there’s more than a little difference in what’s available. And also a greater understanding of what’s going on in the developing brains of kiddies. Of course, if you smoke less, then the effect is lessened. Even so, I’m not comfortable offering to my teenagers in any amount.

          Now get off my lawn!

          • h4rr4r

Stronger weed is like liquor vs beer. You just use less of it.

I would not suggest it for teens either, even if I did most of my smot poking when I was a teen.

      • Dazza

But alcohol and smoking is legal at 18 and the developing brains thing still applies.

    http://www.politico.com/story/2017/03/trump-blame-agenda-stalls-236508

With President Donald Trump’s sweeping agenda hitting the rocks as he edges toward the 100-day mark, top aides, political allies and donors are embroiled in a furious round of finger-pointing over who is at fault.

The recriminations extend far beyond the implosion of the GOP’s Obamacare repeal on Friday. Senior aides are lashing each other over their inability to stem a never-ending tide of negative stories about the president. There is second-guessing of the Republican National Committee’s efforts to mobilize Trump’s electoral coalition on behalf of his legislative priorities. At the Environmental Protection Agency, a top official quit recently amid accusations the department is failing to advance the president’s
campaign promises. And one of Trump’s most generous benefactors, Rebekah Mercer, has expressed frustration over the direction of the administration.

While all the myriad scandals and fuck ups swirl like flies around this shit-pile of an administration, it has steadily rolled back restraints on military action in the ME, and that makes us all much less safe.
Trump: “And ISIS. I’ll bomb the shit out of them.”
My gawwd’…THAT has become our foreign policy in the world’s most dangerous regions, and it ushers in a new and extremely dangerous era.
    Excerpts from a good read:
    [NYR Daily
Trump in the Middle East: The New Brutality
    Ahmed Rashid
    3/27/2017

The most disturbing discussion to date revolves around the US military being allowed to create free-fire zones in which US forces could target and bomb potential enemies without regard to civilian casualties or damage to economic infrastructure—a stark repudiation of counter-terrorism rules set down by the Obama and Bush administrations.
Instead of pursuing a comprehensive approach that involves diplomacy, economic aid, conflict resolution and alliance building, Trump has reverted to a dangerous dependence on the military while undermining all other US state institutions that deal with the wider world.
    ———————————–
There are serious questions about what part, if any, the State Department will have in the Trump administration’s foreign policy.
    ————————————
Trump’s growing dependence on a military strategy around the world will reduce US influence with its allies and all major powers. It also makes it less likely that they will join what Trump hopes will be a crusade against the Islamic State. Autocrats around the world will follow the American example and be encouraged to abandon diplomacy and politics and use force to get their way. We will be left with a US that is set on inflaming conflicts rather than ending them, a US that abandons any sense of global responsibility and pays no regard to international agreements. A new global era has begun in which American allies can no longer rely on American leadership. It may be the most dangerous period we have seen in our lifetimes. ]

One rapid but fairly sure guide to the social atmosphere of a country is the parade-step of its army. A military parade is really a kind of ritual dance, something like a ballet, expressing a certain philosophy of life. The goose-step, for instance, is one of the most horrible sights in the world, far more terrifying than a dive-bomber. It is simply an affirmation of naked power; contained in it, quite consciously and intentionally, is the vision of a boot crashing down on a face. Its ugliness is part of its essence, for what it is saying is ‘Yes, I am ugly, and you daren’t laugh at me’, like the bully who makes faces at his victim. Eric Arthur Blair. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/5a4eb3be7e8ba797b26643955a6337a2a426a070c1d7cb09249fb924dd3bc82b.jpg

The act of war thing was mentioned earlier today. It doesn’t mean we get into a shooting war with Russia.

If it does get declared an act of war it means any citizen involved can be charged with treason since levying war against the United States is one of the only two acts that will bring a treason charge.

It may be stretching the definition of levying war, but it should also give those traitorous bastards something else to calculate when they are deciding to flip and turn state witness or not.

Why is the ACA “failing” in certain areas of the country?

I’m sure is has nothing to do with the $2.5 billion/per year funding GOP cut, that was suppose to be there to bridge the gap between people’s healthcare needs, and insurance company losses….

And yet these clowns offer a proposal to cut taxes on the most wealthy by $70 billion a
year in their GOP/Trump WealthCare proposal…

Let that sink in for just a second, the GOP wrote a bill giving a $70 billion/yr tax
break, that was used to fund healthcare, to the wealthiest people of this country, all while letting insurance companies raise costs for similar coverage healthcare plans, as well as
kicking 24 million off their current coverage.

          • Thiazin Red

I’ve never played Dwarf Fortress, but from what I’ve heard yes. You start out with nothing but three colonists who probably don’t have much in the way of usable skills and try to keep them alive by directing them to do things. Sometimes they are productive, build things and grow crops. Sometimes they ignore instructions, eat raw potatoes and stab dudes instead.

    • Ryan Denniston

Uhhh, can we pause at she stabbed a dude?

      • Shanzgood 🥓

Rimworld is the game that has no bisexual men and and if your straight men hit on a lesbian they get a huge mood penally, but will keep hitting on her. And keep getting penalized in a fail spiral. And the game author defended it by saying every bisexual man he knew was actually lying and gay.

        • Ryan Denniston

Thanks, but it makes no more sense.

          • Jennifer R

The lone guy who wrote it has fucked up views of interpersonal relationships.

*shakes head, stuff falls out & rolls under couch*

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tifosi Suprema

            Not quite, Hun.

A lot of people, Straight & Gay, refuse to believe there are people, like me for instance, that are Bisexual and attracted sexually to men & to women.

A lot of times, people and entertainment media try to “erase” us, saying there are no Bisexuals, that we are just Gay sluts in denial.

It sounds to me like this game is explaining a bug/fail by practicing Bi Erasure.

None of this reflects on Thiazin Red, whom has the right to enjoy their game for what it is.

I likeit in Star Trek Online, I just play my characters as Bi by actually doing things Bi women do. :)

          • Jennifer R

No, straight men hit on all women at a rate based on the woman’s attractiveness score regardless of if the woman is interested or not. Then the men get depressed from the rejection, but try again. Doomed to fail and spiral away in a mood cycle which results in them killing someone. It would be a very on the nose metaphor if they author didn’t come off as a smarmy MRA asshole.

    • Ryan Denniston

Also too, raw potatoes are the worst. I have a slow cooker, I know the tragedy.

      • UncleTravelingMatt

My friend’s dad was a pilot during World War II and was in Berlin post-war. He said he knew the US would never win a war against the USSR when he walked out of a club where he just had a nice steak dinner and saw a Soviet soldier reach into his overcoat, pull out a raw potato, and start gnawing on it. Right then he knew the Russians were too tough to mess with.

Update on Maximilian “Brad” Shamwow III.

Mrs Keeper got back from her business trip on Friday night. 30 seconds after she walked in the door she decided we were keeping him. We were keeping him already, but it made her feel like she had a choice in it. He needs some leash training and but at least knows sit and down.

          • Jennifer R

I figured that maybe the pilot was getting special music and they would use something real after. NOPE. fuck off of an ending too.

She was great, and I’m glad they made her evil universe version the most bad-ass and ruthless evil version of the characters. But you are straight-up [Trump voice] WRONG about the theme song. But you are not a nasty woman or a bad (or sick) guy, so that is the limit of Trumpishness I will deploy.

the first season was rough, but they eventually settled into their roles. the third and fourth season were pretty good overall

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tifosi Suprema

          • Wild Cat

I never watched the original (but I did meet the ever-weird Harlan Ellison who always ranted against it).
TNG was watchable, DS9 was surreal and limited, but Dax was HOT!!!!

          • Brendan_M

The Ronald D. Moore episodes of DS9 were great. He went on to bring us the BSG reboot.

          • Wild Cat

I plead ignorance (or senility). I remember Odo, Dax, multiverses that were easy to reach, bad Irish actors . . .

          • Brendan_M

The later seasons got pretty good. And Colm Meaney is a great actor.

It is all streaming on Hulu. Season 6, episode 19, “In the Pale Moonlight” is a favorite.

Yes I do, I’ve kind of gotten away from it, I was a big fan of the Rockies in the 90s when DS9 was on, though.

          • Brendan_M

As soon as MLB accepts the new international and youthful nature of baseball’s future, it should be more fun to watch. Also, the correct team to root for is the Reds. Watch this video of Joey Votto with a dumb fan interfering with a play and tell me I’m wrong.

          • Brendan_M

I think it’s great that he was really cool to the fan later, but the awesome way he dissed the fan in the first place really endeared Joey to me. Previously, a woman who is like a sister to me had him as a client, and after she told me about her interaction with him I immediately designated him my fave sportsball player.

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tifosi Suprema

Yeah, the “why are you wearing the jersey?” thing he did, all with one grab, was epic.

I dunno why anyone would reach for a foul from that part of the stands.

          • Jennifer R

I do like actual baseball (I have been a Cubs girl my whole life). The baseball episode was terribly placed and had it been say, a season 1 or season 3 filler would have been awesome. But it was factually “We need an episode that doesn’t cost any money to film”, right in the big ending.

          • Brendan_M

BSG did a very good episode about labor exploitation when they needed to do that. At least it was a baseball game and not just fucking around on a farm, like some shows do.

I think you have to be in the mindset for it. It wants to have drama and tension and be a cop show. But it has to deal with the realities of minority officers and in fact chose that to make one of the central themes of the TV series.

          • Brendan_M

That’s great. I love when they allow good genre productions geared towards women. Jessica Jones was my favorite adaptation of a comic book until Legion.

I need to see Jessica Jones.

          • Brendan_M

There is a scene from the climax of the show that would be the A-Bomb of feminist GIFs to post in discussions of sexism, but I won’t allow myself to use it because I don’t want to spoil anything. There are some flaws with the show, but the unapologetically feminist Marvel Cinematic Universe show makes me very happy. And David Tennant as one of the best villains I’ve ever seen is delightful.

            I like DS9 a lot.

THAT was a show I never understood how it got made. So alien slaves crash in the Mojave and we let them build new lives in america and have jobs? They have three genders? How did that get green lit?

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tifosi Suprema

I guess there was a theatrical movie first? I’m unsure, I haven’t really seen much of the franchise.

          • Jennifer R

There were like three made for TV movies first/concurrent with the same characters but bigger names in the cast. IIRC it’s based on a book series.

Edit: Well bugger me there WAS a theatrical movie first.

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tifosi Suprema

OK. If it shows up on one of my streaming site I’ll take a look at it. :)

          • Jennifer R

The movie doesn’t go into Newcomer life like the series does. (Family, Religion, why the 3rd gender is supposed to shut up and sweep temples and give birth are all storylines, as is interspecies relationships all show up in the TV run).

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tifosi Suprema

That sounds pretty interesting. :) OK, Prime has Season 1 but it’s 9.99 for the season. I should be able to swing that later on, money is tight right now with having just moved. :)

It looks like Der Trumpanfurher knows very little or nothing about legislating. He should be madder than hell and calling for Ryan’s head on a platter for writing a bill that would come up short by 30-40 votes, all GOP. Even last minute concessions did nothing.
Ryan knew how many votes he had. He hung Trump out to dry. Ryan played him for a chump, a sucker, and the clown he is.
Ryan is simply the lackey for the aristocracy, nothing more. He never wanted to “fix” healthcare. Again he played Trump for a fool. Doesn’t say much for Bannon either, if he understood at all, it wasn’t in time.

They should only be allowed to move there if they promise to play outside. Late August/September in Vegas? Youch!!!

C’mon. Was there ever — after Davis seized control — any doubt that eventually this was going to be a thing?

The only surprise to me is that they’ll get there before the Marlins.

Nevada taxpayers are coughing up $750 Million to pay for this. At that price, let them have it, and tell the Raiders to fuck off.

Assuming they don’t self destruct before then, it will take ideally retaking the House in 2018 or at the minimum winning enough seats to be able to force the rest to take this seriously. Right now there are too many if not guilty/tainted GOPers, then just willing to be complicit and not do anything at all.

White House Announces Jared Kushner Is Now Responsible For Everything

Just imagine what Kushner’s daily schedule is going to be like:

    9:00-9:30: “Fox and Friends” debrief.

9:30-10:00: Provide broadband internet service to entire nation.

10:00-11:00: Stop working on providing broadband internet service to entire nation to focus on just providing it to entire government first.

    11:00-11:30: Elevensies.

11:30-1:00: Working lunch to solve the intractable Israel-Palestine peace process that adults in government have been working on to no avail for decades.

1:00-1:30: What do you mean there are other places in the Middle East that need tending to? FFS, people, I can’t possibly do everything!

1:30-2:00: Daily “I can’t possibly do everything” meeting with POTUS. POTUS reminds Kushner that the AHCA went down because he was off in Aspen, skiing.

2:00-2:15: Cancel all skiing vacations for the foreseeable future.

2:15-2:30: Search for another samovar of coffee to push through the rest of the afternoon.

2:30-3:30: Develop one “transformative project for America under the banner of Trump’s $1 billion infrastructure program.”

3:30-3:45: Meeting with POTUS to discuss “transformative project.” POTUS says there is still something missing.

3:45-4:15: WHAT IS IT MISSING? COME ON KUSHNER, THINK! YOU CAN DO THIS.

4:15-4:30: Trump’s name added to transformative project. POTUS signs off.

4:30-4:45: A brief wander through the White House. How did it come to this? Didn’t life used to be so much simpler? I could have done anything. I really would have liked to own the Dodgers. Oh, man, the crack of bat, fists pounding on leather, the scents of an afternoon ballgame? Heaven is a patch of well-manicured grass, the cheers of the crowd, fathers in the upper decks teaching their freckle-faced kids how to score the game, and nothing but the expanse of a hazy Southern California afternoon ahead of you. That should have been me. That’s what I was meant to do. How did I end up here? I only vaguely remember: My name, shouted in a certain dawn … a message … a summons … There must have been a moment, at the beginning, where I could have said – no. But somehow, I missed it.

4:45-6:00: Fix the VA system, the opioid crisis, streamline government, and maybe do some trade stuff?

    6:00: Fifteen hours of weeping.

You may be right. I may be crazy.

          • That would be one.
And I really like River of Dreams. Not sure why, it just grooves right with me. And as a Catholic school girl I have always liked Virginia.

You Catholic girls start much too late
Aw but sooner or later it comes down to faith
Oh I might as well be the one.

          • My religion teacher hated that song and kept telling us how he was cool, and he was hip, but really, it was better to wait because reasons!
He was funny. About 35 or so teaching religion sex ed (which is different from the regular sex ed we got in gym class from our lesbian coach of all sports- she was awesome, and named Condam, no kidding) to a buncha 15-16 year old girls.
We gave him so much grief XD lolz

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tifosi Suprema

            Good Lord. XD

In my former existence, I dated a Catholic girl for some time. It wasn’t good. I didn’t like myself then, and let people hurt me because I didn’t think I deserved any better.

But that poor guy is at peace, now. :) I have the best parts of what he was, but Anna is much stronger, and can take care of herself.

          • I am not at all surprised that you had such an experience but I am sorry you did :hugs:
            We’re not all bad, honest!

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tifosi Suprema

~hugs~ Oh, I know. This woman was a mess, I hope she got herself in order. She’d had some awful things in her life.

It’s funny – it feels like a different person went through all that. I remember it all, but it’s disconnected now. My life started over the day I came out en femme. :) It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been fun. :)

          • I could not even imagine.
I’d think It would be very eye opening to be able to see life from so many different, yet same, eyes. Sort of compare what views are different, which ones are the same, and such like. How things are perceived. ‘Cause of course we perceive everything from a basis in our own backgrounds, regardless of how hard we try to remain objective, and in our culture we do ingrain certain views on people based on gender.

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tifosi Suprema

Indeed. I mean, I’ve always been “different”, and I was pretty lousy at trying to be a man.

It’s been an adjustment. I was actually happy the first time I got “mansplained” at, that feeling didn’t last long. XD Sexism, Transphobia, B-Erasure, and generally hate aren’t fun at all.

But, to have lived 40 years as ugly, sad and pathetic, to turn that into attractive and appealing and to enjoy my days – It’s not easy to describe how that feels. :D

          • Liberating? Exhilarating? Both frightening and energizing at the same time? All of them at the same time XD If I had to guess anyway.

          • Anna Elizabeth, Tifosi Suprema

That. all that, and just pure joy. I had neighbors when I came out, a Lesbian couple, and they said to me – “It’s wonderful to see someone accept themselves and be so happy.” I had loads of people tell me they had never seen me smile before I came out.

Now I smile, laugh, cry, I feel everything. That poor lost man never felt much beyond despair.

          • cmd resistor

      • msanthropesmr

If they had ANY oppo research, Trump wouldn’t be president.

        • To be honest, I think they wanted him from the get go. They get everything they want and some populist clap trap to distract the rest of us, and then when no one has a job, there are no workers rights, there is rampant voter suppression, no safety net, no health care, they will go “whoops, that Trump guy, better vote for us from now on”

          • msanthropesmr

I think that gives them credit for smarts not in possession.

          • idk, Mr. For 30 years they played a very long game and chipped away at enough to get where we are now. When stuff did not work, they recoiled, and tried a different track, and chipped away more. And more and more and more.

      • Well that is one way to take it.
But another way would just be he was so in love with his then wife that he wrote a song about how he was a lucky bastard and knows it. Which is how I took it ^.^

        • Carpe Vagenda

Well, he grew up middle class in an affluent suburb taking decades of piano lessons, so the blue collar posturing put me off a bit :)

Also too I’m more of a ColdSpring Harbor -> Stranger Joel girl.

          • I do agree with that. I was blue collar so his…pretending to be when he was obvs upper middle class was a bit weird? I like better his songs that don’t try that route.

Cyclone, Hurricane, and Typhoon are location based names for the same thing as far as meteorology is concerned.

        We call hurricanes umm cyclones.

      Cat 4?

      Not gonna be fun.

    • Panika MCD

could be worse, could be a Category 5! but that also depends on how much could erode and what kinds of levees you have. hope you have good levees!

in all seriousness, people are still going out in it which is definitely not recommended, but, as it has made landfall, it’s going to become weaker. hunker down and stay away from windows. also too, get the candles out BEFORE the power goes out. we don’t want you bumping around in the dark next to windows that can break while you’re looking for freaking candles and a wind up flashlight.

      • Red Bellied Black Shake

They may upgrade it to a Cat 5. Depends on how fast the winds are blowing.

247 kmph have been recorded so far.

        • WomanInThePersistence

          That seems very fast.

          • Red Bellied Black Shake

Not fast enough to stop people holding onto their beers 🍻

They like beer up north, it’s like bread or something.

        • Panika MCD

it really should start breaking up now that it’s made land fall.

          • Red Bellied Black Shake

I hope so, one death reported so far, and that was yesterday I think.

    • (Major_Major_Major)ly_Pissed

I haven’t been following Debbie, although I should as it is what I do. Is it a fast moving, compact storm? That will mitigate a lot of the potential damage as the surge is likely to not be as bad (and smaller waves, in a relative sense). Good luck to you, and don’t stay in low areas regardless. It is always better to return to rebuild, than to not be able to rebuild at all.

      • Red Bellied Black Shake

It is a slow moving Catagory 4, potentially being upgraded to Catagory 5 once the eye slowly moves across Bowen.

It’s tearing buildings apart at the mo, people who didn’t evacuate are absolutely shitting themselves, hiding in bathrooms.

Storm surge is producing 7 to 8 meter high waves, severe flood warnings in place.

I’m very far south myself, but I have family and friends up there.

        • janecita

          Did they evacute?

        • (Major_Major_Major)ly_Pissed

I hate to hear that. Hope your family and friends are safe. Big, slow, powerful storms are the worst. Keep us updated.

Stay safe people of Australia. I was in Florida for Andrew. The storm is scary as hell, but life in the aftermath is a bitch.

      • Red Bellied Black Shake

I remember Andrew, I was wondering at the time why they have it a male persona.

We in Australia surmised that it was done so as to lessen the horror of the storm, as most people here agree that women are much more dangerous.

I guess that’s why our cyclones mostly get female names.

        • Sophia

They used to be named after women only but that got changed around 1980(?) not sure why. They alternate between male & female names.

    • Red Bellied Black Shake

About 25,000 people in low-lying areas have been urged to reach higher ground ahead of an expected storm surge.
Hayman Island is being lashed with gusts of up to 263 kilometres per hour, and before 2:00pm the storm’s eye is forecast to hit the mainland near Bowen, where the streets are deserted and the power has been cut.

Gusts of up to 275kph possible, storm surge expected

The eye itself is estimated to be about 50 kilometres wide.
Once crossing the coast, the cyclone would remain as a category three over land for 18 hours,

          • WomanInThePersistence

I said it earlier. We should have a betting pool. My money’s on Flynn.

          • shivaskeeper

Flynn was pretty well a foregone conclusion once I thought about it. His retirement pay of roughly $13K/month is at stake. Pretty much the only thing that will stop military retirement pay is a conviction for Treason or Sedition. Assuming he does flip and turn states evidence that will be a huge factor in it, since I don;t think he’ll be getting another job anytime soon as a not convicted traitor who cut a deal.

Since it appears he was an undeclared foreign agent at the same time he was still on active duty as the head of the DIA I would think he’ll cut a deal to ensure the military does not recall him to active duty to prosecute him as well. He can still be retroactively reduced in rank or go to jail for that and that has to be a factor for him,

He was also not well liked or respected by his peers, so there will be no help there.

          • Fuck’s sake. They should nail his ass anyway. Undeclared foreign agent WHILE head of the DIA.
            Just…fucking hell.

Ooohh…a red state (Kansas) wants in on some expanded medicaid courtesy of Obamacare. Looks like they were emboldened by the Drumpcare failure

The Kansas House passed Medicaid expansion by a margin of 81-44 earlier this session. That is still three votes shy of a veto-proof majority.

State Sen. Laura Kelly, a Topeka Democrat, said she doubts the Senate, which is more conservative by comparison, will pass the bill with a veto-proof majority but she does expect the legislation to pass and advance to Gov. Sam Brownback’s desk.
(Update: KS Senate gives initial approval to Medicaid expansion on 25 to 13 vote)

Gov. Sam Brownback’s office voiced strong opposition to expanding Medicaid Monday as the Kansas Senate began debate on a bill to expand the program three days after a congressional plan that would have barred more states from doing so fell apart.
