Michelle Obama makes girls cry!

So even with all the GRR and ARRGH and WTF of living in TrumpMerica, let’s also remember it’s International Women’s Day, and so we can actually think about some nice things, too, like some thoughts from people we actually like. Michelle Obama observed the day with a surprise visit to 12 girls at Francis L. Cardozo Education Campus, a combined junior/senior high school in Washington DC, where she talked education and achievement, at least after the girls started breathing again following all the “OMG that’s Michelle Obama in our school!” hyperventilation. In a message on Instagram, Ms. Obama had to go and politicize International Women’s Day by mentioning that Cardozo serves a lot of recent immigrants, so good on her:

Celebrating the beauty and diversity of our country on this #InternationalWomensDay with some of the many fierce and promising girls here at DC’s Cardozo Education Campus. I loved visiting this school because it tells the American story in so many ways. Three years ago, Cardozo established its International Academy with only 150 students, but today it boasts nearly 400 who are thriving in and out of the classroom. By embracing young immigrants and their diverse cultures and contributions, Cardozo is a model for our entire country. The girls I met with today are ready to take on the world. We’ve just got to make sure that the world is ready for them.

We like that we had a First lady who can get away with calling girls “fierce.” Not everyone can pull that off.

From Hillary Clinton, we got this awesome inspirational retweet of a message that simply makes us grin and grin and grin:

Deeply, unashamedly earnest 4th graders are some of the best people out there. The world needs plenty more.

Oh, OK, one more joyously earnest little girl, from 2014:

That's pretty adorable

And now you kids get to your open thread, OK?

Yr Wonkette is ad-free, and supported by generous contributions from readers like you. We earnestly appreciate it!

The four main organizers of the Women’s March were among the protesters arrested during a New York City rally on International Women’s Day.

Tamika Mallory, Linda Sarsour, Carmen Perez and Bob Bland were arrested early Wednesday afternoon after a day of loud but orderly protests for “A Day Without a Woman,” a strike the group organized to mark IWD. The organizers, as well as several other protesters, had been sitting in the street near the Trump Hotel at Columbus Circle, disrupting traffic. A representative for the four activists confirmed the arrests.

As I would expect, the NYT’s Gail Collins has a good one:

A Girl Stands Firm on Wall Street

There’s currently a bronze statue of a little girl standing in front of the charging bull on Wall Street.

It really does have a great look — all the laws of mass and motion aside, you feel pretty confident the bull is going to wind up backing down. And it reminds you that while marching is important, sometimes you can make a difference by standing still.

for International Women’s Day, one woman who managed to tough it out last night until about 2 am at the TX Sen. State Affairs hearing on the Bathroom Bill (SB6) decided to use her time sharing information for people who couldn’t and one thing she shared was a poster made by a little trans girl that said:

“The unicorns are with us, you should be, too!”

    http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m7cx0v0Fgp1rbaxuco1_500.gif

  • Panika MCD

thoughts on the TX Senate State Affairs hearing for #SB6 (The Bathroom Bill) after 22 hours at the Pink Dome and then going home and sleeping some also too:

the part that bothered me the most (if anything could bother anyone more than having to listen to Tony Perkins) was the guy who said we needed cis-women only bathrooms so that women have a place to go cry after they’re sexually assaulted.

why? oh, should we really accept sexual assault as part of life? we shouldn’t. and even though there are going to still be sexual assaults every 2 minutes today, tomorrow and next week, I don’t think my only option for responding to being a victim of one should be to go cry in the bathroom. I should be able to go to the authorities to report it and get justice.

but then we have to talk about who has the privilege to do so. sure, I can. I’m white and cis-gender. I only get harassed by TEA for looking remotely Arabic. I have a reasonable chance of being listened to. I don’t have to worry about detainment or deportation. I don’t have to worry about myself or my family members being shot by the people I went to for protection. (which in the state of Texas, Black Texans are involved in twice as many police shootings as their population. “psssh,” says Dan Patrick, “that’s only like a quarter of them!” fuck him. that doesn’t include other forms of violence and indignity visited upon people of color in Texas by law enforcement. besides, if he wants us all going by our birth certificates, he needs to go by Dannie Goeb.)

17% of hate crimes in the US are against LGBTQ individuals. 50% of those who are murdered for their LGBTQ status are trans-women. 53% of those crimes were committed against people of color. and 79% of the murders were of people of color. and half of trans-people experience intimate partner violence after coming out to their primary partner. so while being a woman can be dangerous (1 in 3 of us have experience sexual assault before the age of 18), it’s not near as dangerous as being Mesha Caldwell, Jojo Striker, Jaquarrius Holland, Tiara Lashaytheboss Richmond, Chyna Doll Dupree or Ciara McElveen who were murdered between 1/4 and 2/27 of this year for thinking the freedom of expression applied to them as American citizens.

I’m not sure what they think they’re protecting me from. I’m not sure what they think they’re killing with their stars and stripes.

    • Resistance Fighter Callyson

Please tell me you are kidding. Jesus fucking Christ…

      • mailman27

I, too, am having a hard time believing that anybody would try to solve sexual assault crimes by giving the victims somewhere to cry. Say it ain’t so.

    • Spotts1701, Resistance Pilot

I would love for someone to use their arguments to justify restrictions on the freedoms of strait men. According to these people strait men are vicious raping monsters who can’t be trusted to control themselves anywhere near women and girls, so maybe we should be limiting their freedoms instead of constantly punishing women (cis or trans).

        • Longstreet63

Oh, don’t start thinking its just that. Religion is a great enabler of it, too. Abraham really screwed the planet.

      • Longstreet63

I felt a need to elaborate to make the point.
This type of person–the kind you are seeing speaking out against and making laws and treating your ideas with contempt–hate women.
Every other hate they have branches from that. They hate women just as much as any Red Pill MRA. they’ve just learned to hide it under a white sheet and pass laws instead of complaining.
They hate brown people, sure. They’ve mostly hated them talking to white women. They’re terrified that they will lose property rights. They hate gays, sure, but they only really complain about male ones–because they’re associated with femininity. They hate trans people, but the only ones they envision are the ones born male.

Tell us, NYT op-ed, why are women on strike?

The United States strike will focus on “broadening the definition of violence against women,” says Sarah Leonard, spokesperson for the strike. In addition to protesting domestic, sexual and physical violence against women, Tithi
Bhattacharya, a member of the strike’s organizing committee, says the strike on Wednesday focuses on rejecting the “systemic violence of an economic system that is rapidly leaving women behind.”

“This is the day to emphasize the unity between work done in the so-called formal economy and the domestic sphere, the public sphere and the private sphere, and how most working women have to straddle both,” says Ms. Bhattacharya. “Labor is understood to be work only at the point of production, but as women we know that both society and policy makers invisibilize the work that women do.” The strike calls for women to withhold labor, paid or unpaid, from the United States economy to show how important their contributions are.

The platform of the strike seeks to elevate the demands of the majority of women, not simply the demands of the loudest or most privileged women.

“The language of feminism in recent years has been used to talk about ‘Lean In’ feminism,” says Ms. Bhattacharya. “We do not want a world where women become C.E.O.s, we want a world where there are no C.E.O.s, and wealth is redistributed equally.” This, she explains, is why they decided to convey their “new international feminist movement” around the socialist philosophy of “Feminism for the 99 Percent.”

I think mine was courtesy of Star magazine. I read something about Nicole Kidman, an how she was married to Tom Cruise. It confused me because I had never met an adult woman with her own name before. When my mother explained that some women don’t change them, it them became deeply confusing to me why women had to in the first place, which led to learning about history.

Oh gosh that note! I would cry a million happy tears if I found out my daughter wrote that.

Instead I lecture her about manga and the extreme sexualization of the female form. At least some of the girls aren’t total helpless saps in a few stories.

    • Thiazin red

Anime too, jeez not EVERYTHING needs panty shots.

      • Jenny

Holy shit she was playing some notice me senpai game and a quest had a task of getting a picture of a girl’s panties. I caught her on that quest and said nope. Off the game. There is nothing cool, fun, or neat about violating someone in such a way. Panty shots are not ok. You do not allow people to take those picture of you either. Nope nope nope. Good bai “indie game.”

        • sw19bunnies

I really don’t understand the preoccupation with the pantsu. Mind you, I also find the mandatory and tedious “summer at the beach/bikinis” episode in every single fucking season of an anime series (apart from Tokyo Ghoul, et al) incredibly annoying.

          • marxalot

It’s what I used to call the “proximity fetish.” You may never actually get near real female sexparts, but you can get something that has been near them! And then the substitute object of desire moves into the space of desire, and now you’ve got someone who gravitates toward the things which have been near pussy (which, as ideated and never actualized, is always perfect and never compromised with messy reality) and will actually prefer it (or respond more strongly to it). I may have spent too much time thinking about this already.

          • sw19bunnies

Not at all, that makes sense. Same thing with the tentacle hentai as a replacement to get around censorship.
I just find pantsu stuff funny in the “hee hee, he said butt” kind of silly way.
            Cultural differences abound.

Republican senator to call Trump’s bluff on Obama wiretapping accusation
Sen. Lindsey Graham says he’ll subpoena information from the FBI and DOJ if he has to.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) plans to call President Trump’s bluff regarding the baseless allegation he made Saturday morning about President Obama tapping his phones — an allegation the White House has since asked Congress to investigate.

During an interview with CNN, Graham said he’s willing to go as far as subpoenaing records from the FBI and Justice Department, which reportedly refused a request from Comey to “publicly reject” Trump’s assertion that Obama ordered his phones tapped.
“The president has asked Congress to look into whether or not his campaign was wiretapped by the Obama administration,” Graham said. “I will take up that challenge.”]

So I couldn’t strike today for Reasons. But I do feel like I helped improve the lives of women. Or at least one woman.

The elevator pitch version of my job is I’m a social worker who helps people with special needs manage their finances. A lot of times this means paying cable bills or buying clothes. But today I helped a woman pay for many thousands of dollars in critically important dental care. She said she’s going to smile for the first time in years. And then she’s going to visit her very sick mother, for probably the last time before her mom dies.

I’m not gonna lie, my job sucks better than 50% of the time, but it’s hard to be cranky with clients like that.

we have a $1 billion Texas Emissions Reduction Plan fund (aka TERP) which is constitutionally dedicated. they’ve used it for years to balance the budget, but starting 2 years ago, many in the establishment wing of the GOP decided that they liked the idea of “truth in budgeting”–aka using the funds that the people voted on for their dedicated purpose–and they don’t seem to want to roll that back this time around. so we’re alright.

What’s the WaPo gotten for us lately in the Fuck Trump department?

    The
National Confectioners Association (a.k.a. Big Candy) held its annual conference this
week at the Trump National Doral resort in Miami. The
group’s president casually noted that candymakers
“have a very narrow window of time now with the current administration
and political dynamics” (a.k.a. the 2020 mid-terms) to roll
back unfavorable policies. Trump represents “significant opportunities
to go on offense,” he explained — predicting they could save $280
million a year if the administration cut sugar subsidies. The
group also wants to end regulations enacted under Obama that restrict
GMOs and require informative food labels. Purely by coincidence,
the group has booked two future events — one in late 2017, the other
in 2018 — at the Trump International Hotel down the street from the
White House. And they met in Trump’s Washington,
D.C., and Miami hotels two previous times during the campaign.

Kilimnik, a joint Russian-Ukrainian citizen who trained in the Russian army as a linguist, told operatives in Kiev and Washington that he met with Manafort during an April trip to the United States. And, after a late summer trip to the U.S., Kilimnik suggested that he had played a role in gutting a proposed amendment to the Republican Party platform that would have staked out a more adversarial stance towards Russia, according to a Kiev operative.

Guys, I’m a horrible person because my first thought after I read this was, “FU, you POS”:

“Martha Brawley of Monroe, N.C., said she voted for President Trump in the hope he could make insurance more affordable. But on Tuesday, Ms. Brawley, 55, was feeling increasingly nervous based on what she had heard about the new plan from television news reports,” the New York Times reports. “She pays about $260 per month for a Blue Cross plan and receives a subsidy of $724 per month to cover the rest of her premium. Under the House plan, she would receive $3,500 a year in tax credits — $5,188 less than she gets under the Affordable Care Act. ‘I’m scared, I’ll tell you that right now, to think about not having insurance at my age,’ said Ms. Brawley, who underwent a liver biopsy on Monday after her doctor found that she has an autoimmune liver disease. ‘If I didn’t have insurance, these doctors wouldn’t see me.’”

“Neither the White House nor Mr. Kushner’s attorneys … has confirmed which financial assets Mr. Kushner still controls — rendering oversight of Mr. Kushner’s recusals and compliance with conflict-of-interest law impossible,” the letter from the three Democrats said.

    Municipal elections here next month
    Hotel boom in Helsinki
    Reindeer racing seeking bigger audiences
    The North Korean situation
Women’s day and the rise of conservative values in Russia – a third of women there think equality isn’t necessary (WTF?)
    The hospital attack in Kabul
A performance at the National Theatre about the indigenous peoples of the arctic and climate change

    Refreshingly Trump-free.

Happy Women’s Day to everyone who feels partial. I remember my decades being considered a woman, and I can unfortunately testify that yes, I’m getting away with a lot more as a man.

    • SayItWithOtters

I’m no expert, but haven’t Russian women learned a certain amount of self-reliance over the centuries owing to wars and alcoholism? Surely there can’t be any romantic notions about men protecting the little woman from the big bad world.

In the doctors office to pick up a prescription…browsing Wonkette..as one does.
Bannon-y dude across from me: Is that an old android phone?
Me: Yes. It is an old Turbo 1. I have to make it last… since if I get a subsidized phone I lose my unlimited plan.
Bannon: What do you mean “subsidized”?
Lady sitting next to him whispering: “Obama phone”
Me: No. When you sign a contract with a cell company, they subsidize your phone by adding the price of it to your bill every month.
Bannon: I don’t know nothing about that shit. I just go in and get my free phone every two years.
Me: That is a subsidized phone. It isn’t free, the phone company is charging you over the course of the contract. You pay for the phone.
Bannon and Lady: (Glaring at me….)
Nurse: Here is your prescription sir.
    Me: Thank you.

but, true story, my parents knew some people who lived in an avocado orchard when they were in graduate school. the couple’s dog kept gaining weight and their vet kept reducing the dog’s diet until it was eating basically nothing at home. after the dog died of a heart attack, the couple approved an autopsy. when the vet got to the stomach, he put down the scalpel, picked up the phone and yelled at the couple: WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME YOU LIVED IN AN AVOCADO ORCHARD?!??!?!?!!!

  • Gosala

So, here’s what I’m going to say to my congress critter (well, to the flunky who answers the phone) tomorrow

The Congressman needs to vote against Ryan’s bill to change the ACA.

It’s a disaster on its face. Sure a few upper income people who are young and healthy will do well. But the elderly, the poor, and the sick will suffer badly.

And without the individual mandate, it is financially unsound.

Please convey to the congressman the message that he needs to vote against this unsound, unfair and irresponsible bill

What I won’t say, because congress critters can’t process complex messages, is that if they want to improve the ACA the way to go is to remove the states’ ability to opt out of the Medicaid expansion.

In states where Medicaid was expanded, the ACA is working well. It’s only in places, life Florida, that refused to expand Medicaid where it is in trouble — thanks, Roberts.

(Of course, if they wanted to go for single payer…nah, that won’t happen l

Or, just demand that the bill get reviewed by the Congressional Budget Office before it goes to the floor. It is extremely unusual for Congress to consider legislation without a full analysis of its costs and benefits.

      • Gosala

I thought about that, but really the bill is so bad, it doesn’t matter what the CBO says.

    http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/03/08/517561046/how-americas-idea-of-illegal-immigration-doesnt-always-match-reality

People living in the U.S. without legal status are frequently invoked in American politics — especially in recent months. But the conversation is often short on facts about the millions of people who fall into this category.

There are, however, outdated beliefs: A Pew Research Center survey in 2015 found that very few Americans are aware of recent changes in immigration patterns.

Immigrants In The U.S. Illegally Say ‘We’re Not Hypothetical’
    POLITICS
Immigrants In The U.S. Illegally Say ‘We’re Not Hypothetical’
And, of course, there are stereotypes, which often don’t always match up with reality. Most people in the U.S. illegally have been here for years, for instance, and people working service jobs far outnumber migrant farm labor.

Here’s a look at the actual statistics about people living in the U.S. illegally.

We should note that there are a few caveats about this data. Different research groups use different methodologies, and in some cases, they rely on estimates. We’ve included links to all our data sources so you can read about their methods in more detail.

The losses from boomers aging out of the workforce however, are expected to be offset by increases in working age immigrants over the next two decades. The number of working-age immigrants is expected to increase by nearly 5 million, from 33.9 million in 2015 to 38.5 million in 2035.Without these new arrivals, the study estimates projected number for the U.S. working age population would decline by 8 million from 2015.

Yes, it’s part of the calculus that goes into the Scandanavian (& German) willingness to accept refugees. They need a young workforce to support the aging population. Not just with taxes, but with actual jobs in the workforce as workers retire and of course the healthcare industry. It’s not without it’s problems. Taking so many in at once have strained their refugee support network to the limits.

The investigative site ProPublica has a report out today on some 400 individuals who the Trump administration has appointed to executive-branch positions that don’t require Senate confirmation. Thirty-six of them are lobbyists, which suggests that the swamp may not be getting drained, and several of them are wingnut conspiracy types, which suggests that the swamp may be convinced that Ted Cruz’s father killed John F. Kennedy. But ProPublica’s best find might be Danny Tiso, a Department of Labor hire. ProPublica says that Tiso’s LinkedIn page identified him as having graduated from high school in 2015, though it no longer appears to do so, and this 2014 internship announcement suggests that he would not have been a senior until the 2015-2016 school year. (It’s possible, of course, that he graduated early—this Feb. 2016 Nashua Telegraph article identifies him as a former high school student— or that the announcement was mistaken.)

Tiso, according to LinkedIn, worked for the Trump campaign in New Hampshire as an event coordinator. His previous work experience consists of four internships and, per a quick Google search, he made a school honor roll in 2010. When he was in sixth grade.
And now he works at the federal Department of Labor! That’s neat.

Having lived as both a man and a woman the thing I miss about being a woman is that you could show vulnerability or weakness and still be strong and self-reliant at the same time. As a man if you show vulnerability people start seeing you as suspicious or (gasp) gay. It feels like a fuller life being able to be both.

(Although I still don’t see myself quite as a man. I still feel like I’m in between, even if it’s 10%-90% or 20%-80%.)

    • Sophia

I like a man who can show some vulnerability. Everyone has their vulnerabilities. A man who shows them is just more honest.

      • sw19bunnies
        • Sophia

Sad but true. The never ending dick measuring

          • sw19bunnies

Because I hang around sportsball a lot, this resonates with me so much! I actually wore my pink tartan hunter hat to a game last month, and I got a fair few lighthearted “I don’t want to know!” and “Are you wearing that as a bet?”, but I like to think I’m spreading some joy and breaking down the old binary code.
Fluffy scarves also, too, plus they’re comfy and good for the shoulder/neck pain.
I also find that wearing some pink helps make women see me as non-threatening (or at least a little less threatening), which is great, as we can all get on as normal human beings.
NB fuck anyone who cant handle it, didn’t want to speak to you anyway ;)

          • FukuiSanYesOta

I was in a pedicure place in Oakland (they’re great!) And a guy came in with his little girl, looking for his wife, I assume. The little girl spots me and says “but this is for girls!”. Daddy says “you don’t want to know”

            Still makes me laugh.

    • sw19bunnies

People assume I’m gay. Doesn’t bother me…. mind you. I’m not trying to get laid either way. But it’s fun to play with straight people’s stereotypes. :)

      • A_Changeling

Well I do like men. It just feels like I’m not exactly gay because I’m not exactly a man.
I’m weak and vulnerable and I don’t mind. With everything I’ve gone through I’m also quite invincible.
I just don’t like the attitude get from some people. It’s hard to explain having had the both experiences and one of them feeling more comfortable.

        • sw19bunnies

          I hear you, totally!
I spent 40 or so years being told what was normal and trying to fit inside little boxes and attempting to ‘fit in’, even as gay.
I wish I’d known about the asexual spectrum and non-binary, etc back when I was younger and I wouldn’t have felt such an outcast, with so many unanswered questions.
I could have recognised – oh, biromantic asexual, but not hardline. Okay, wonderful, now what’s for lunch?

        • BosGrl

Can I send you a hug through the interwebs? I love that we’re all different and yet the same.

    • BosGrl

The men in my life that I love the most, gay and straight, don’t mind being vulnerable.

      • Suse

My hubs cries often, especially when he sees injured or sick animals, or we watch a sad movie. He’s very tender-hearted and that’s one of the things that attracted me.

        • BosGrl

          Exactly!

          • A_Changeling

This reminded me that I first started liking one of my exes when he’d asked me on a date and I had said yes (although I wasn’t really interested) and he said “Whew! My legs were shaking!” So actually I appreciate that in people.

    • Dazza

      That’s very interesting.

    • Gosala

There are ways for a man to express vulnerability depending on the audience and the context.

My boss, whom no one would think of a weak, is a master. I think his “secret” is that he owns his weakness in complete comfort and he allows others to be weak or vulnerable without the least hint of judgement — indeed he is likely to find a way that he shares the same vulnerability.

I have learned, painfully to be sure, to express vulnerability. It helps to be specific: this makes me angry, that frustrates me, the other sucks ask the energy out of me.

I’ve learned to avoid expressions that convey as generalized sense of defeat such as depressed, give up, feeling worthless.

There needs to be an underlying source of strength and hope. Yeah, things suck right now, but….

And there needs to be a willingness to listen to the frustrations, anger, suckiness that others are feeling.

Well, that’s my experience. Hope it helps. I’ve been male since birth, and I still find it hard. It must be that much harder coming to it later in life.

      • A_Changeling

That’s a good explanation of how complicated it can be. In my former life I could just act like a kitten if I felt like it. And it was probably considered sexy too. Even if I was at the same time a boxer or a sailor or in the army. Well, there was some balancing there too to be taken seriously. Being cute probably helped (in retrospect I can see I was quite a babe). Now that I’m aging out of cuteness it’s probably a good thing it no longer does :/

But the move reflects the underlying aims of Trump and his top aides to more broadly remake U.S. immigration policy to match a nationalist ideology that views large numbers of foreigners as harmful to U.S. society. The pathway to reform, Trump told lawmakers, is a legislative overhaul of the legal immigration system toward a “merit-based” approach — a move that, if enacted, could significantly reshape the nation’s demographics and have long-lasting economic implications.

To Trump, the goal is to protect American workers by slashing immigration levels and limiting competitors he views as taking jobs and suppressing wages. To his opponents, the president is pursuing restrictionist polices that could harm an economy that relies on robust immigration for growth.

Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price is arguing that states should be allowed to charge women more than men for coverage. I guess being a woman is a pre-existing condition which will require more money for stupid extras like contraception, prenatal care, pregnancies and birth. In its current form, the ACA prevents this discrimination.

sometime around, I think, 3 am a non-binary individual was pretty pissed that the legislators who had, for the most part, never met a trans person that they knew of before that day were using the wrong language. Sen. Zaffirini asked Pugsly (the last name provided) to give her any corrections necessary and was ready to take them down. Pugsly was a little indignant with Sen. Zaffirini still and Chairwoman Huffman was all, “no, motherfucker. you don’t do that to Sen. Zaffirini. she’s going to make sure we all get at least the terminology right and you will be nice to her about it.” then Pugsly is all, “oh, she’s doing great, it’s the rest of you that suck.” to which the committee members were like, “fair enough.”

SHANGHAI (AP) — China has granted preliminary approval for 38 new Trump trademarks [emphasis added], a move that offers a potential business foothold for President Donald Trump’s family company and protects his name in a country notorious for counterfeiters.

The trademarks cover everything from hotels and golf clubs to bodyguard and concierge services, public documents show.

Trump’s lawyers in China applied for the marks in April 2016, as Trump railed against China at campaign rallies, accusing it of currency manipulation and stealing U.S. jobs. Critics maintain that Trump’s swelling portfolio of China trademarks raises the possibility of conflicts of interest[…]

Dan Plane, a director at Simone IP Services, a Hong Kong intellectual property consultancy, said he had never seen so many applications approved so expeditiously.

Plane said he would be “very, very surprised” if officials from the ruling Communist Party were not monitoring Trump’s intellectual property interests. “This is just way over your average trademark examiner’s pay grade,” he said.

          • Left Coast Tom

            Actually, Fremont completely surrounds Newark.

          • Jonny On Maui

There was a time, long ago, when there was actual open space between the East Bay cities…

          • Left Coast Tom

Fremont is a combination of several former East Bay communities and the space in-between – the various districts, Mission San Jose, Niles, Centerville, Irvington…were their own cities. Add to that Ardenwood and Warm Springs. Newark was also proposed to be part of the new city but voted no, probably because the would-be Fremont planners saw Newark as the “industrial” zone. The former cities each have their “downtowns”, Fremont has struggled to define a downtown for the city as a whole, but now that there’s lots of Silicon Valley money around, they’re building one.

  • Up In Smoke O’hontas

Nice time! So, minihontas walked out of school in solidarity today with 2 bros, 2 LBGTQ friends and about 100 kids I don’t know. They marched from their middle school and met up with several hundred kids from East High and stopped traffic (with the help of the police, natch) on the main drag up to the Capitol where they rallied, were “dismissed” from “school,” got pizza and went to the Museum of Contemporary Art, with a group of 5 tweens, they made these choices (with parental permission to leave school and understood when to return). Then they walked back to school, finished math and caught buses home. I don’t have pix yet, but I can’t even express how proud I am, and how hopeful this makes me. He was singing “Bread and Roses” in the shower! He’s 13! You guys, THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE!

I told him he could drop the f-bomb twice without receiving a hard time, and can use “crap” freely since he comported himself is such a mature manner. Then I told him to go look up “comported” in the dictionary :-)

Don’t get me wrong, he regularly puts his shirt on inside out and backwards, and will probably be in summer school again, etc. kid stuff…but tonight I’m happy that I have done what I was able (it’s been a hard journey) and one more person will persist because he gets it, and that’s my fault :-)

    Deplorable Masterpiece Theater presents

    “Ma And Pa Get Real”

[Scene: The interior of a lower middle class living room with a large picture window, threadbare furniture and tin cans littering the floor. Outside the window the sky is copper red with dead trees waving their last sturdy branches in a furious wind storm. The wind can be heard faintly. An elderly husband and wife,Ma and Pa, sit in rocking chairs looking out the window.]

    Ma: Nice day today.

Pa: (nodding) Yup! Better than yesterday.

(Long pause with both Ma and Pa still rocking in their chairs)

Ma: Any news on the radio Pa?

Pa: (sighing) Please Ma. Don’t start. The radio quit working three years ago.

(Long pause as Ma and Pa continue rocking)

Ma: Maybe we should install some of those TrumpCo® Brand steel shutters on the big picture window. It would be a shame if the wind blew it in or scratched it.

Pa: (stops rocking and turns to Ma) Woman! Do Not START with me! (Pa waves at window) That ain’t GLASS! It is twelve inches of unbreakable, polycarbonate, scratch resistant and bullet proof TrumpCo® Plexiglazz®! NOTHING can damage it! Absolutely nothing!

Ma: (turning to Pa and getting hot) How can you be so sure?? So the sales brochure said all that! Has it ever crossed your mind that maybe they were LYING?

Pa: (jumping up out of rocker and turning to Ma) The God-Emperor™ never lies! Never!

Ma: For Pete’s sake Pa! Open your eyes! Look at us! We were promised a great America. We live in a concrete bunker with one window. We eat Trumpco® canned food that reminds me of the stuff we used to feed our pets before we had to eat them. All of our children were drafted into the TrumpWars® and we have never heard from them since! I miss my children! I miss my kitties! Why did we do it? Why did we vote for him?

Pa: Because the God-Emperor™ needed us! Because we were angry and wanted to drain the swamp! Because the brown people had free cell phones! Because that woman mishandled emails! Because…!

(Ma jumps up out of rocking chair and confronts Pa)

Ma: SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU IGNORANT MAN! JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY!

Pa: (stunned) Ma? Did you just tell me to shut up?

(Fade to black with the sound of the wind rising in volume until the abrupt sound of a pistol shot)

Congress Is Doing a Huge Favor for BofA While No One Else Watches
WASHINGTON ― House and Senate committees will consider an obscure bill called the “Fair Access to Investment Research Act” on Thursday. It will not be a major media event. The bill, which will likely sail through Congress, will not cause a new financial crisis, bar millions from accessing health insurance or undermine any foreign policy alliances. But it will help one company — Bank of America — make money by avoiding lawsuits.

          2. Remove alligators.

      When Worlds Collide, no?

      • memzilla Ω

You win a half pallet of tuna! You would have won the other half if you had correctly identified the artist, Chesley Bonestell. His paintings of planets are why we got to the moon — they inspired the generation of technicians and engineers who built Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo.

        • BadKitty904

Woot! I don’t think I’ve ever known the artist’s name, but my brother and I are both HUGE retro-sci-fi geeks. Jeffsy’s cat is named “Harryhausen” (or “Harry,” for short).

I’ve seen WWC *many* a time and own a DVD copy. I’m sorry to say that I read somewhere recently that a “remake” is slated for production.

Did Bonestell also do the famous painting that mistakenly appears at the end of the flick?

          • memzilla Ω

Yes he did, and it was no mistake. That was not just the utopia, it was the hint of a dead civilization with secrets to discover — note the vertical unnatural structures on the left — and a warning to us to not BLOW OURSELVES THE FUCK UP WITH A-BOMBS.

          • BadKitty904

I have read, for what it may be worth, that what is very obviously a painting was tacked onto the end of the film for its sneak previews. George Pal, the director, wanted to shoot the scene with a miniature set, but the studio shipped the film out – with the painting as the final shot – before that could be done.

          • memzilla Ω

Oh, well, that I don’t know, but it certainly sounds plausible, given the studio system’s obsession with cost control. Bonestell also did Forbidden Planet, of which I attach an example, depending on your orientation, of both hawt Leslie Neilsen and hawt Ann Francis. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-reK7PHAhSfo/U52byJznqcI/AAAAAAAA6Ao/Z0IYl_T0XhA/s1600/forbidden-planet-1956-anne-francis-leslie-nielsen-cifi.jpg

          • BadKitty904

I’m going to have to study up on this Bonestell. It’s sounding like he drew two of my all-time fave spaceships – the rocket from WWC and the saucer from FB.

Speaking of Forbidden Planet, what the hell was up with the film’s musical score?

          • memzilla Ω

Bonestell did indeed paint those spaceships. As for Forbidden Planet’s music, that caused a HELL of a row. AFM, American Federation Of Musicians, threatened to sue EVERYBODY — the studio, its executives, Disney (who animated the Monster From The Id), and the Barrons, Bebe and Louis — because neither of the Barrons were AFM, and their instrument, the theramin (google it), was not an AFM-sanctioned instrument. The studio compromised by crediting Bebe and Louis for “electronic tonalities” — which is how it’s credited in both IMDB and the movie — conspicuously NOT credited as “Music By…”

          • BadKitty904

THAT, I did not know. Just that the soundtrack is seriously weird as dammit. Also didn’t know about the Disney connection with the Id Monster – interesting…

          • memzilla Ω

Of course, I wonder what important information has been squeezed out of my head to remember stuff like this.

          • BadKitty904

Oo, oo, I know that one!!!

Yes, Pal did, in fact, want to make the sequel, but was unable to get enough financial backing to convince the studio to let him do it.

Little Johnny’s father went to a parent/teacher meeting where he mentioned Johnny’s gambling problem to her. Teacher took note of it and said she’ll pay attention to it in class, if it comes up.

Little Johnny goes to school the next day, walks up to the teacher and says, “I’ll bet you $50 that I know the color of your underwear and will tell you at the end of the day. My dad said he’ll pay the $50 if I’m wrong.”

She takes the bet. After she releases the kids for recess, she thinks, “I better do something to break him of this gambling habit” and removes her underwear so he’ll never be able to guess the color.

At the end of the day, little Johnny walks up to the teacher and says, “Your underwear are black.” The teacher laughs and says, “No Johnny. This is why you shouldn’t gamble” and briefly lifts up her dress so Johnny can see she’s not wearing any underwear at all.

After Johnny’s father arrives to pick him up after class, the teacher tells the father, “You were right about Johnny’s gambling problem but you owe me $50 because he bet me he could guess the color of my underwear and I showed him I didn’t have any underwear on.”

The father says, “Dammit. That little fucker bet me $100 he could get you to show him your vagina before the end of the day!”

How infuriating is it that we’ve known every fucking detail of how dicks work forever, but it’s only been in the last ten years that we’re finding out women’s bits are NOTHING LIKE WHAT WE’VE BEEN TAUGHT THEY WERE??? I’m seriously fucking PISSED about that.

      • Shanzgood
        • Serai 1

Yep. All that bullshit about it being a tiny little thing. Fucking HELL. When I first told my mom about this, she was incredulous. “How could they not know about something like that?” Hello? “They’re MEN, Mom. They don’t give a shit how we’re built or what we need. They only care if it affects THEM.”

It was like a fucking lightbulb when I first read about this. I’d always felt there was something profoundly wrong about the way we were supposedly constructed. There was just no fucking WAY what I felt when I had an orgasm could possibly be coming out of a tiny little scrap of flesh half the size of my pinkie nail. No. Fucking. Way.

          • Juan de Fuca

As a dude who’s been practicing the art of “It ain’t sex unless your lady cums first or at least second (depending upon her proclivity)”, that statement isn’t fair at all. Don’t stereotype all of us guys as not knowing what a clitoris is.

Many of us have spent many years getting to know where a clitoris is and how it works. When I first discovered it, the last thing I thought was that it was half the size of a pinky nail. Well, it does kinda start out like that but then it’s like – damn.

          • Serai 1

Well, think of all the time you could have saved if you’d known what the clitoris ACTUALLY IS. That’s the point I’m making – because the vast majority of the medical establishment has been made up of people who basically didn’t give a shit about this, you and I and everyone else had no idea what the fuck was even down there. (Though we women were pretty clear that what we were being told was bullshit, an advantage any guy who was interested didn’t have.)

All the GOP had to do was create a more effective version of universal healthcare that benefits at least as many people, keeps costs down and covers everybody. According to them, this should be a piece of cake — for the last nine years and counting.

            Whew, loooong time ago.

          • I own a copy of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis.

          • Me also too. The boys LOVED it

          • And Shanz thought Baron Muchausen was old.

          • I love me old movies. And new movies. And middle aged movies.
My favorites though are older. Like Metropolis and Lion in Winter and Auntie Mame.

          • I like me screwball comedies. His Girl Friday and Bringing Up Baby are my go tos. Also, Arsenic & Old Lace

          • I like those also, too XD Though Auntie Mame IS a screwball comedy.
It is THE screwball comedy. I so wanted to be her when I was young. Not sure if it were Ross or Mame, or both….maybe.
OHHH and Creator XD Newer compared to the others but loved that one.

          • sw19bunnies

            Which score?

          • It was the most complete copy they had upuntil about 4 years ago. It’s a Kino print…

          • sw19bunnies

Ooh, nice! I still haven’t gotten around to watching that.
EDIT: sorry I meant the new recovered/remastered one.

          • Do, it is worth it. If nothing else the visuals are amazing

          • There’s a more complete print floating around from a copy of the film found in Argentina. Not sure when or if has been released on DVD

          • Unhappy Fingers

It’s out. “The Complete Metropolis” on Kino. DO see the most recent restoration. It’s also on Amazon Prime I think. Has the original score Lang commissioned, too. I have it ripped from a TCM showing.

I actually saw a screening of the old MOMA version while in grad school with Moroder and Co. performing live – and **hated** his score.

          • theCryptofishist

            So, when was yours restored?
I wonder if it’s possible to sync one up the Club Foot score.

          • I dunno. Like i said, Kino print of the next to most recent “most complete” copy

          • theCryptofishist

Yeah, I think Club Foot was in the 90s, maybe 80s. But I don’t think it was the Morodor.

So Tim Tebow played a Spring Training Game today for the New York Mets (he was #97, which is a number usually assigned to guys who are with the team as roster filler). 0-3, struck out twice, bounced into a double play, and got plunked in the shoulder. Still got a standing ovation from the crowd.

    • sw19bunnies

Good to see he’s still insisting on playing QB

    • TJ Barke

      Wingnut welfare for sportsballers?

      • Yes.
There are STILL people who insist he got a raw deal. Even though he bombed and played prima donna and everything. He got a raw deal.
        Because Jesus I guess.

        • TJ Barke
        • Spotts1701, Resistance Pilot

My friends who watched him play Arizona Fall League said he looks exactly as advertised – a guy who hasn’t played any sort of competitive baseball since high school. Plus he didn’t want to give up his day job of being an SEC Network commentator for college football, so he only played 3-4 days a week while the 19-23 year olds he was playing with were busting their asses every day.

          • Sounds about right

          • Spotts1701, Resistance Pilot

His first at-bat today was against the AL Cy Young Award winner, Rick Porcello.
            Fastball* – Strike 1 looking
            Fastball* – Ball
Fastball* – Swung right through it for Strike 2
            Fastball* – Strike 3 looking

*By “fastball” I mean “Low 90s with little to no movement”. Porcello, when at full strength, throws about 2-3 mph faster than he did today.

          • sw19bunnies

God obviously convinced him that the final fastball was going wide.

        • sw19bunnies

He got a raw deal, but only because he couldn’t replicate his “fuck it, we’ll do it live” mad skills in training, and American Football is a do-it-by-the-numbers sport. There’s little room for creativity, because so many jobs, and so much money, is on the line

That said, his hubris was not being willing to move to RB or another position.
          Too bad so sad.

          • Bullshit. He was given free reign to do his creative look at how marvelous I am shit with the Broncos. And he pulled a few moves but mostly was mediocre and sucked more than he succeeded.

          • sw19bunnies

Sorry, but results disagree with you.
The trouble with Tebow was he didn’t have the background abilities and skills that could be measured in training, like Russell Wilson. And in a similar vein, Rodgers and Flacco being able to fling hail marys 70 yards downfield in an emergency.

He was dumped because he wasn’t willing to become the wildcat option, because God talked to him or something.
Tebow was great fun while he lasted. Good luck to the silly twit and thanks for the memories.

          • sw19bunnies

Also too, I am very sad about Kaepernick. He went backwards faster than I thought it was possible to un-coach someone, when they seemed to try to intentionally ignore all his strengths and concentrate on his weaknesses. But then the 49ers turned into an utter fucking shitshow after Harbaugh was undermined.

          • What results? I watched the results. He won 3 or 4 games for the Broncos. Whoopie. So the Broncos dumped him needing an actual serious quarterback. He didn’t do anything else stellar despite the Jets just about falling all over him and then when they dared suggest they could use him elsewhere, he sniffed in disdain.
The reason why Wilson and Rodgers and Flacco still got jobs is not because they can measure them in training- it is because they yield results. Namely, consistent game wins and play off appearances.
The reason Tebow did not have the training stats is because there was no there, there. He was a flash in the pan one trick pony who relied on the good players around him to make himself look good, and then took the credit for it, and got figured out fast by everyone else.

          • sw19bunnies
          • lol, true that.

Edit: You should get me started on friggin Brady sometime, though as a player, I can’t fault him tooooo much. Except for the cheating cheatering.

        • Suttree

          He didn’t pray hard enough!

        • shivaskeeper

Yup. The raw deal was because of his outspoken faith and insistence of putting bible verses on his eye black. He was the greatest player evah, but societies hated of Jesus and all Christians in general were what got him cut.

      • Spotts1701, Resistance Pilot

Pretty much – the Mets have 10 players absent because they’re playing in the World Baseball Classic, so it’s not like he’s taking someone’s spot at the moment. If he manages not to completely make a fool of himself he might get assigned to the Mets’ Class-A Advanced team in Columbia, South Carolina. More likely he’ll end up with their Florida State League team in Port St. Lucie. His chances of actually making the big leagues? Practically nil.

    • Suttree

I would rather they had Darrel back. AT least he could keep the fans awake with some extra flavor on the popcorn. IYKWIMAITYD.
