If I do that, next they’ll demand loaves and fishes

Medical Doctor and first-term Republican congressmoran from Kansas Roger Marshall has some novel thoughts on why it’s OK to repeal the Affordable Care Act and potentially leave 20 million people without health insurance. In an interview with medical blog STAT, Marshall explained the ACA hadn’t really helped anyone anyway, and so repealing it would be no biggie. Besides, it’s right there in the Bible, in the Book Of I Got Mine, Fuck You:

“Just like Jesus said, ‘The poor will always be with us,’” he said. “There is a group of people that just don’t want health care and aren’t going to take care of themselves.”

Pressed on that point, Marshall shrugged.

“Just, like, homeless people. … I think just morally, spiritually, socially, [some people] just don’t want health care,” he said. “The Medicaid population, which is [on] a free credit card, as a group, do probably the least preventive medicine and taking care of themselves and eating healthy and exercising. And I’m not judging, I’m just saying socially that’s where they are. So there’s a group of people that even with unlimited access to health care are only going to use the emergency room when their arm is chopped off or when their pneumonia is so bad they get brought [into] the ER.”

In mere reality, ThinkProgress cites a 2016 Harvard School of Public Health study finding that Medicaid expansion improved health for low-income people in Arkansas and Kentucky and also reduced ER visits, saving everyone money, hooray.

Marshall, an alleged human being and purported follower of Jesus Christ, then went on to explain his own practice, which he hopes will become a model for hospitals nationwide. This stuff gets him excited, and oh boy, it’s going to get you excited too!

“Our vision was that we would look more like a hotel with customer service that delivered five-star health care,” he said. “So our cafeteria looks more like a coffee shop than it does a sterile hospital dining room. We have bright windows everywhere, and outside of every window there’s a garden. Thinking that healing is more than just a knife and a needle.”

Isn’t that wonderful? And so much nicer than boring poor people who frankly are too lazy to join a gym and work on their cardio anyway. We think maybe Jesus had some things to say about really rich people and needles, too, but we could be wrong. We won’t even begin to think about what Jesus would say about denying health insurance to 20 million people — though Max Von Sydow probably had it right in Hannah and Her Sisters when he said if Christ saw what was being done in his name, “He’d never stop throwing up.”

Marshall’s comments didn’t sit so well with North Carolina NAACP head Rev. William Barber. On Saturday’s “AM Joy,” Barber told Joy Reid that Marshall’s out-of-context reference to “the poor will always be with you” amounted to “a form of heresy,” since it twisted the scripture:

Well, that is a form of heresy, again, it’s a misquoting of scripture; it is what the so-called religious evangelicals put out there. […] If you go back to Deuteronomy, that scripture says because the poor will be with you, then you should care for the poor, you should care for the alien, and it was talking to the nation. Jesus, if He did anything, provided free health care, Joy.

We don’t even need Jesus to have been the literal son of God for us to prefer that read of the verse, but then, we tend to pay far more attention to the Sermon on the Mount and to Matthew 5:34-46, with all that “whatsoever you do to the least of these” stuff, than we do the to stuff about abominations, because we are godless commies who think everyone should get at least decent health care before we worry too much about whether a hospital will make the Michelin guide.

Yr Wonkette would like to always be with you, but we’re ad-free, so that’s really up to you people, now isn’t it? Thank you for your generous donations!

It could also be because, when one is poor, one tends to live where there aren’t a lot of healthy food choices, one doesn’t have the means to make a lot of healthy food choices, nor does one have the time or resources to exercise (what with the working 2-3 jobs to keep a roof over the head and avoid starving to death).

We’ve had the early expansion. We’ve lived through Obamacare. We’ve learned some lessons and they ought to be watching and listening and using the data that we have.”

A spokesperson for LePage didn’t immediately reply to TPM’s request for comment, but LePage’s reference to “early expansion” appears to be in reference to the state’s MaineCare program, which expanded in 2002. As governor, LePage has vetoed multiple efforts to expand the state’s Medicaid program under the Affordable Care Act.

In May of last year, LePage incorrectly said that his vetoes had not resulted in thousands of Mainers, who would have otherwise been eligible for coverage, going without.

After a petition to include Medicaid expansion received a sufficient amount of signatures earlier this year, the state will vote on expansion in November.

State, the right of the people to MOAR GUNZ keep and bear Arms MOAR GUNZ, shall not be
        infringed.”

        • suziq

That’s what it says right?? And it only takes one person for a militia so there will be no infringing! At all!

          • Celtic_Gnome

And you eat a whole bunch of McDonald’s every day, and you’ll be well-regulated as fuck.

          • suziq

Whew, good thing I am not in the well-regulated militia because I do not eat at McDonald’s.

          • H0mer0

that’s news to me. A diet of McDonalds never seemed to keep my kids regular.

Hey Doc, you do know many of those homeless people can’t take care of themselves were put out on the street by Ronald Reagan. No of course not, and even if you did know, you don’t give a shit. And it for me it makes people like you despicable.

Yes. I look back on being poor with great fondness. All the free stuff I got. It was terrific. Hot dogs and potatoe chips. Store brand bread, if it were on sale. Hell. It wasn’t my money. I could splurge and ocassionly pick ketchup as the condiment I was going to buy. Ah memories. God I miss that. The bestest memory I have is that one when I was 22. I went into respiratory arrest. Instead of spending money on asthma medicine I was buying ketchup. I guess In retrospect, that was pretty fucking irresponsible of me. But that comes from the wisdom of being older. Hmmmm. Interesting thing I just thought of. How come bad for you food is so cheap?

  • MeerkatsRMammals

I just love when “good Christians” twist the words of the book they love so much. When they’re not cherry-picking the lines against abortion & homosexuality, they’re twisting WWJD? Pretty sure Jesus would be caring for the sick. There’s LOTS of references to how he treated the sick & poor throughout that book…spoiler alert! He treated them WAY better than you want to.

    • If there WERE any lines against abortion – which there aren’t, even.

      • MeerkatsRMammals

        Well…we know that…shame they don’t :(

      • britishvoiceman

Very true. Contrary to what the so-called Christian forced-birthers would have you believe, the Bible contains numerous references to life beginning at first breath (i.e. birth) and NONE stating or implying that it begins at conception, plus Exodus 21:22 makes it crystal clear that a married woman’s fetus is NOT regarded as separate life in its own right, but the PROPERTY of her husband!

  • Bitter Scribe

“So there’s a group of people that even with unlimited access to health care are only going to use the emergency room when their arm is chopped off or when their pneumonia is so bad they get brought [into] the ER.”

Hey, genius, THAT’S THE WHOLE FUCKING IDEA. People should have access to health care in part so that emergency rooms can deal with, you know, emergencies, instead of having to cater to people who can’t get in to see a doctor because they have no insurance.

I was rereading Morison’s history of the U.S., specifically the chapter on the Eisenhower administration, in part because I wanted to be reminded of what it was like when (some) Republicans were (supposedly) sane. It alludes to how Ike brought into his cabinet a bunch of rich guys who wanted to destroy the agencies they headed (sound familiar?). The Kansas farmers were furious at Ike’s agriculture secretary because he kept trying to cut farm subsidies. Incidentally, Kansas (where Ike was from) voted overwhelmingly for him. And now their heirs are voting for people like Sam Brownback and this goofball.

There are some people who are just too stupid to survive, and it ain’t poor people without insurance.

  • whitroth

    (Dis)Hon. Rep. Marshall,

I realize this may come as a shock to you, but the Founding Fathers enshrined in the Constitution and in law, by way of our first treaty, that the US is NOT A CHRISTIAN NATION, so stick your head in a toilet and flush.

    • britishvoiceman

With respect, I don’t think that’s the point – this guy is another right-wing Hypochristian who happily cherry-picks and distorts what’s written in the Bible for his own ends, and then attempts to ram his completely twisted version of Christianity down others’ throats.

      • whitroth

No, he’s a Christian Satanist. He does Black Masses sacrificing *us*.

  • Zyxomma

I have Medicaid and United Health now, after many many years with NO health insurance. I paid out of pocket years ago when I had a horrible accident. I’ve taken great care of myself NO MATTER HOW BROKE I AM. Now that I have insurance, I’ve gotten a number of medical tests (breast ultrasound, full labs, I have a colonoscopy scheduled later this month), and I am in perfect, vibrant health. Not everyone who’s broke treats her (or his) body like shit. And yes, I buy Greenmarket vegetables and organic food with SNAP. Dr. Roger Marshall, I’d tell you to kiss my ass, but I don’t want to catch whatever it is you’re carrying.

Btw, when I had the horrible accident I mentioned above, I did NOT go to an ER; I went home. I did self-care (including buying a knee brace) until the orthopedic surgeon was able to see me. His physician’s assistant gave me a list of places I could get an MRI, and I called each one to find the least expensive, because again, I was paying out of pocket. He did the same when it was time to find a physical therapist. Eventually, I recovered $5,000 of my medical expenses when my attorney settled the claim (I got a little money, too). Had I needed surgery, I would have been up shit creek without a paddle.

    MEDICARE FOR ALL!!

  • This poster from the Chamomile Tea Party sums the GOP’s attitude about our health insurance: https://flic.kr/p/h2LB7s

  • Scrofula

Sorry, Dok, I just couldn’t finish that. Cause:
Me before Obamacare: ambulance ride to ER from diabetes complications: $13,000+, eventually eaten by taxpayers.
Me after Obamacare (MediCal): quarterly visits to a practitioner, A1C, medication, eye exams; all free to me, would be about a grand out-of-pocket. Last A1C is 6.3 (almost totally controlled).
It’s classism (the REAL elitists) and hatred, and makes NO financial sense to oppose this–acute savings to taxpayers of over $12,000, and minus the hundreds of thousands if my feet got amputated. Yeah, but I didn’t WANT it before when I was broke and technically homeless.
(I know y’all know that, but basic math needs to be pointed out to prevent my rage-stroke)

    • Shawn Renee Ernoehazy

Before ACA, if I had been laid off, I could not have gotten insurance for my husband and I at any cost. My UI payments put us above the MediCal income levels, and our ages meant that just by being humans meant that we had at some point been sick at some point (I already had a diagnosis of Bipolar II). The COBRA plan offered exceeded my income when I was employed! Without the ACA, I would have been without my medication, my husbands herniated disc would have been untreated (we opted for the least invasive possible; even though it was leaking in an oddly downward way, we named the MRI image “Persistence of Disc” after the Dali painting). I remember the bad old days when even employment based insurance did not cover my son’s recurrent ear infections. Luckily, I worked for the doc who took care of my son (I was his medical assistant) so he just changed the diagnosis code to something not at all related to his ears so insurance would pay for the visit and medication. He did this for all of his patients.

      • Scrofula

It truly is fucked. And there’s no reason for it to be this expensive. And another economic absurdity–at some point, it’s simply better to be unemployed if you have a chronic condition.

      • Peripatetic Poltroon

COBRA is a sick joke. But it’s what the GOP would call “access to healthcare.”
The last time I was laid off, the COBRA was something like 1/2 my take-home pay.
