women-march-twitter

It’s the day after the inauguration, the nation is still standing, and women and men are marching all over the country to send a clear message to the Hair Beast in the White House: Down With This Sort Of Thing! We’ll be bringing you updates from the media and the Twitter and from our network of Wonkers as they get enough coffee in their system to post photos! And when we’re not updating, we’ll be here for you to chat, as you will.

10:27 There definitely seems to be a running theme in some of these signs.

pussy-grabs-back

10:35 Love this one from Berlin, via Human Rights Watch and the Guardian:

drag-donald

10:49 Well that’s some fine timing: Gloria Steinem speaking at the women’s march (livestream at Vox, not embeddable, sorry!). Networks all covering the interfaith prayer service at the National Cathedral, of course.

10:55 Did we say not embeddable? We found the embed over at the Facebook page!

11:12 There is something to be said for understatement.

generally-displeased

We should note this was posted by an InfoWars editor who is displeased himself: “It’s great to see these #WomensMarch protesters know exactly what they’re demonstrating against.” Haw haw, stupid ladies.

11:20 A snippet from Gloria Steinem’s speech:

11:30 OK, it looks like the “live” stream from the Women’s March Facebook keeps skipping around to new URLs, so the hell with it. CSPAN has it, grumble grumble.

11:39 Why yes, this:

11:44 Fun sign from Nashville march:

girls-want-fudamental-rights

And from Philadephia: My favorite sign that I couldn’t get a picture of: “I’m not usually a sign girl but geez”

12:00 Yr Editrix is out and Tweeting in DC:

12:25 Dominic at Chicago march says a cop just estimated crowd there at 100K. Elsewhere, at DC March on teevee, we saw a sign that said “Divesity Matters!” But the sentiment and the rainbows are nice.

Dom and Robyn trying to send photos of Chicago march for us, but cell network is “crushed,” says Dominic. Dumb interwebs!

12:30: Smart boy found himself a wifi hot spot. Thanks, Dominic!

Won’t someone PLEASE think of the children? And teach them to curse loudly and righteously at those who’ve earned it!

12:42 Chicago crowd shot from Yr Dominic:

dom-chicago-2

12:50 Just to be clear, Dominic does not have a helicopter. He has big buildings in Chicago. And that there’s a crowd.

dom-chicago-3

The organizers of the Chicago rally realized that with something like 150,000 people showing up — they’d planned for 50K — there wasn’t much point in marching anywhere, so the rally stayed right where it started, in Grant Park.

1:00 Adam Blampied in Manchester, England reports: “Proud to attend the #WomensMarch in Manchester. Particularly a fan of the ‘we don’t want your tiny hands anywhere near our underpants chant.”

1:10 The Independent reports this is a seriously global movement: Women’s March Antarctica

1:20 A word from the opposition: Apparently it is impossible to be in favor of equality in the USA if you don’t hate Islam. Or maybe — and this may be difficult for some to get their heads around — it’s possible to oppose patriarchy and oppression of women everywhere?

trumpers

Mind you, it’s a pretty safe bet these folks are also opposed to admitting women refugees from Muslim countries, because they’re all terrorists. But as a cudgel to hit American feminists with, suddenly, they’re freakin’ Betty Friedan. And to Make America Great Again, they’ll go yell at some woman in a hijab at the grocery store.

1:25 We mentioned Dominic didn’t have a helicopter for shots of the Chicago march. But WGN does:

1:28 Dominic got this shot of the crowd just outside the Blues Brothers apartment:

1:31 Some women march. Some women want to play with the local flora.

1:40 The orders come down from Yr Editrix: Everybody watch CNN at 4 Eastern, please! Rebecca will be on The Lead with Jake Tapper, with Van Jones and Jan Brewer, who we really hope won’t remember those jokes about her briefly being back on her meds.

1:53 There’s really no doubt about it: Our protest signs aren’t just spelled better, they’re funnier.

intrrovert-tweet

2:12 Hmmmm… From CNN, which says it’s really hard to estimate the size of the two crowds. We’ll give ’em the benefit of the doubt and acknowledge Trump’s inauguration had grandstands all around the Capitol building.

Washington Metro traffic was much heavier for the March, but there aren’t any counts for the number of limos delivering people today….

ALL THOSE WOMEN IN THE CABINET! Or both, at least.

2:48 Are they marching in Los Angeles? Yes, they are marching in Los Angeles!

Also, if you’re watching the livestream on CSpan, 12-year-old Claire and her mother are finally finding each other.

Oh, yeah, and Madonna’s gonna sing.

2:50 Donna Rose is above it all. Literally.

donna-rose-above-it-all

And Madonna is having fun telling detractors, “Fuck You.” These are not incongruent facts.

2:58 Get ready for the rightwing media to endlessly show the clip of Madonna saying “Yes, I am angry. Yes, I am outraged. Yes, I have thought an awful lot about blowing up the White House.” And they’ll end the clip there, instead of the rest of it: “But I know that this won’t change anything. We cannot fall into despair. As the poet W.H. Auden once wrote on the eve of World War II, ‘We must love one another, or die.’ I choose love. Are you with me?”

3:05 Another reminder to catch Yr Editrix on The Lead with Jake Tapper at 4:00 Eastern on CNN. Seriously, there will be a quiz.

3:15 A little late, but here is that video of Gloria Steinem at the beginning of the march, while the Hairball in Chief was trying to stay awake in church:

“When we elect a possible president we too often go home. We’ve elected an impossible president. We’re never going home.”

3:18 Awwwww:

intergenerational

3:23 While Shy and Donna wait for Yr Editrix’s 4:00 appearance on CNN’s The Lead With Jake Tapper, this conversation in the Wonkette Sekrit Chatroom:

shypixel: Jan brewer just tried to coo at DR. She wasn’t havin’ it. Too busy eating goldfish.

doktorzoom: Better than shaking her finger in her face!

3:25 And the nice Native American woman who closed out the presentation on the stage spouted pure conspiracy-theory nonsense about the United States having a secret constitution passed in 1871, making us all subjects of an illegal corporate government. Yay for bipartisan kooks!

Beyonce, take us home, please.

3:38 And then there are the very young women. Want to feel proud? Feel proud:

3:51 How about a few more Chicago signs from Robyn?

And yes, of course we’ll stay here to see Yr Editrix on The Lead With Jake Tapper at 4:00 on CNN.

4:10 This celebrity chef, Padma Lakshmi, is quite well-spoken, but she is not Yr Editrix.

lakshmi

4:17 Good point.

sex-offenders-govt-housing

Now it’s a commercial.

4:24 Michael Moore is not Yr Editrix either. Just thought we’d make that clear. Kid Zoom has never seen Roger & Me. Now that he’s all into movie blogs, we should prolly fix that.

Pareidolia is a wonderful thing.

4:37 So the Hairbeeste went to the CIA, stood in front of their memorial wall, bitched about the media, and lied about the turnout for the inauguration. Sigh.

4:53 Yr Editrix super-classily compliments Jan Brewer on Medicaid expansion in Arizona, wins major points for Improving The Discourse.

This, I think is an underappreciated part of loud protesting. I can’t wait to march in San Francisco this evening, but I am determined to be more visible and loud these next years. I am going to be a bother.

  • Spurning Beer

We were planing on marching locally, but downpours and tornado watch are keeping us at home. So I’m watching a live feed from the DC rally, tearing up, and telling the dogs the thunder won’t hurt them. They haven’t asked about the new administration.

          • The Wanderer

HI Ali-cat! Just a shout out to ya, hopes you are well! Very sincerely, so. You know, every so often, I have a very good client. After I do a project for them I sometimes feel like sending some type of email a little heartfelt appreciation. Last one was after both my dogs got too old. They were great buddies, the both of them around 16 years old. At that time, I wound up doing a second project for this family. After I was done, it had made me feel so good, being around their sweet kids and them. It meant a lot to me to see such simple goodness. Especially because I was fairly distraught, I started writing an email and I just felt hokey and stupid so I didn’t. Any rate, I’m the same with comments like this. I want to say something supportive and such but it feels forced and lame. So. Take care. Most of life is just showing up but they don’t say how hard that can be, sometimes.

“As Trump vows to kill climate plan, California pushes back”

Damn straight. Our big cities have blue skies – shocks the hell out of visitors from other states. Betcha Trumpie still thinks LA’s skies look like Beijing all the time.

    • Phoenixdoglover

I am under the distinct impression Donald Trump has been sequestered in his golden spaces for way too long; he doesn’t actually know what America looks like now, on balance. Well, to be fair, he doesn’t know much about anything.

    • Unpresidented Ron

LA has blue skies. Lake Erie is swimmable again. We CAN fix what we broke.

It’s totally an ad, but it’s not a bad one, honestly. I’ll probably end up buying stickers.

        • Carpe Vagenda

You think sending your address to a two-post account is a good idea?

          • HazooToo

Not anymore, they just fucked that idea within two minutes.

          • Unpresidented Ron

It’s an interesting idea, though, and stickers (and flyers) are incredibly cheap. If you have the resources why not make some of your own?
Drat, I should have checked the price of label paper yesterday.

Whoa on the attitude, okay? It does look like spam. Just act normal.

        • Carpe Vagenda

Um. Apparently you haven’t thought this through, and now that you realize that sending an address to a shiny new account to see what happens would be dangerous and stupid, you regret asking.

    • Courser

I feel a LOT guilty that I’m not a Denver’s march. I was determined to go, but I’m very literally exhausted after this week. And next week will be just as bad. Work migrated a server and the techs don’t know why my co-worker and I no longer have access. So I have to get up at 4 am so I can drive to the office every morning. Then my knee went out and I had to hobble around on a cane while I did that. So I’m conserving my resources. It’s early days and I’ll have plenty of chances to march

      • Unpresidented Ron

We all will, as well as performing other acts of resistance. We all have our individual strengths and abilities.
And if you don’t mind my saying so, it’s good to know that you’ve been working past the bad stuff. You really do have strength within you. It’s heartening to see.

        • Courser

I don’t mind at all, thank you. First and foremost, I embraced that I’m a survivor. That’s my foundation. And I found a book that I didn’t expect to give me a new perspective on my childhood that’s very positive and a reminder of what a strong, independent woman I am. But I’d thought, and yes, assumed, that we as a society had moved past all those earlier struggles and now I’m faced with fighting through it all again, this time for my persecuted brothers and sisters as well as myself.

I can do this. I just need to marshal my deep well of fortitude and choose my battles well.

So how long before the Trump abministration sends out emails to the media to stop covering the marches? After all, it worked with the Park Service…

    • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

I was literally just about to repost a joemygod story on that:

“The Interior Department was ordered Friday to shut down its official Twitter accounts — indefinitely — after the National Park Service shared two unsympathetic tweets during President Trump’s inauguration. The first noted the new president’s relatively small inaugural crowd compared to the number of people former president Barack Obama drew to the National Mall when he was sworn into office in 2009. The second tweet noted several omissions of policy areas on the new White House website. A Park Service employee retweeted both missives on Friday. “All bureaus and the department have been directed by incoming administration to shut down Twitter platforms immediately until further notice,” said an email circulated to Park Service employees Friday afternoon. The email, obtained by The Post, described the stand-down as an “urgent directive” and said social media managers must shut down the accounts “until further directed.”

Also, my local news this morning treated me to two different stories about Melania’s outfit yesterday heralding the return of pastels, a story about a 92yo local woman who was too sick to accept Trump’s inauguration invite but still got to make a speech about how happy and proud she was because “no one else could accomplish what he will” (you’re not wrong), and a very brief mention of some protests.

        THIS!

    • Pierre_de_Fermat

But haven’t a lot of folks been expecting that or something like it? I don’t think Trump’s cult will take kindly to it, so he’d have to resign or quietly be forced to. The Senate Intelligence Committee investigation may be the only way to get that. Outright impeachment is dangerous, at least for them. The 25th amendment coup method would probably unite the country even if there were a general feeling he had dementia. Which I think he does.

      • Rick Hill

No, they won’t. There’s also this:
Here is an ironic scenario: Donald Trump pisses off everyone enough for his own party to impeach him; only requires a simple majority in the House. A 2/3 majority is required in the Senate to remove him. Democrats in the Senate vote in solidarity AGAINST removing Trump from office, hoping to prevent a Mike Pence presidency.

        • Pierre_de_Fermat

  • pgjack

I’ll be with my wife at the Cal. State University Monterey Bay protest this afternoon. This is a good beginning but the demand for justice and decency must continue. A massive turnout in the 2018 midterm elections will be even more important and continued involvement by women and men all over the country will drive that turnout. Don’t forget to keep flooding local newspapers and other media outlets with letters and phone calls in addition to staying busy on social media.

    • MizzMazz

I didn’t know there was going to be a CSUMB protest! Was going to try to do SC, but I don’t trust my van in this weather, but this one is doable.

Yeah, but does “chatte” have the same double meaning?
Like in Spanish “conejo”/”bunny” is supposedly better?
This is bigly important what with all the French people here in Fresno.

          • Miss Courbevoie

Yup, it has the exact same double meaning. France being France there are lots of other terms of course but chatte is the equivalent

          • Scrofula

Merci, madam. Is it a diminutive? I mean, “cat” is not the best euphemism.

          • Miss Courbevoie

It’s just the feminine form of cat (un chat, une chatte). Only it’s pretty loaded like ‘pussy’ is in English so lots of people use the masculine and then specify – ‘mon chat, c’est une femelle…’ to avoid dropping ‘chatte’ into the conversation about their actual girl kitty.

          • Scrofula

Not to be a wet blanket, but we should be ready for the “look what you made me do! Well, if the protests start early, and they are, perhaps it will hamper his efforts for revenge. I am thinking that revenge will be more swift and effective as he gains power. He’s a novice at this time and does not have the tools he is used to for striking out. Goddamn I hope he strikes out, in many ways. Show us the colors little one then we will know where to hit next.

      • BeachBum

I was thinking something similar. In business, if you control the means to money, you can get power. In government, its all politics. Usually some sort of consensus and compromise can win the day. The really big money is controlled by the Legislative Branch, not the Executive. Hopefully he wont get all the tools he needs.

A Former Obama Speechwriter Annotates Donald Trump’s Inauguration Speech

In 1960, John F. Kennedy famously said, “Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.” In the first three minutes of his presidency, Donald Trump has already eviscerated that notion.

    and

Donald Trump is not the first person to use [ America first.]. Or even the hundredth. But probably he wasn’t hoping that the one usage in history that pops up first on Google is from an isolationist, defeatist, anti-Semitic national organization that urged the United States to appease Adolf Hitler.

    and

Paul Ryan must have lent DJT his dog-eared Ayn Rand and hoped a little something like this made it in.

Something tells me that when the counting is all done, the number of US-based protestors will be a couple of percent greater than the inaugural attendees, which reflects the split of the popular vote (the National Park Service might never release any figures, but the estimates from various sources are reasonably consistent.)

Worldwide, I’d expect that gap to widen significantly.

    1. Muzzling the NPS and denying entry to the country for Canadian protesters is a sign of desperation born of arrogance, lack of foresight, and a psychotic conviction that projected image is all that matters. Groupthink got us into VietNam, and it’s driving this administration.

    2. The world at large tended not to get too caught up in US internal politics until recently. The EU has its own problems to deal with and to have a significant number of protests in European capitals indicates a deepening distrust of the US as a cultural and trade ally especially as evidence mounts that Russia significantly affected the election outcome.

This administration continues to alienate large segments of the moderate members of the US population. Apparently the Silent Majority is Silent No Longer.

    • Daisy

Not is the silent majority what they thought it was.

    • bbayliss

      A couple percent?

      • GemlikeFlame

Best figures I have right now are 700K inaugural attendees, 200k protesters in DC, 150K in Chicago, and no figures for other major population centers that sound consistent. Right now, that looks to me like we’re converging on the popular vote split. .It would not surprise me in the least to have a much larger gap. It did occur to me that people who feel strongly one way or the other would line up withe the popular vote in some way, Trump is no less toxic now than he was three months ago.

Since recalling this jackass would require a constitutional amendment and the squabbling remains of the GOP control the legislature, all a popular majority gives us is press coverage. Our best hope at this point are the ethics violations, the most egregious of those will probably end up at a deadlocked Supreme Court.

        • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

wow, the number I heard for inaugral was more around 250k – which I thought was generous.

I may be wrong and these things are hard to count.

          • C4TWOMAN

Yeh, I have a hard time believing 700k would have so many empty seats. Maybe that’s based on tickets sold not peeps who showed up?

          • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

i find your answer much more plausible.

          • Sardonicuss

I have seen 250k for the inaugural numerous times..and today was over 500k at noon…with estimates from the streets at an overall total approaching 1 million. Somebody is troll.

          • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

I was telling my instructor I would NOT be surprised if there were 1M people in D.C. today – but you know, I’m bad at these kinds of things.

          • Sardonicuss

They had 250k tickets for ingaug….and had to give thousands away.
Bus parking permits for inagug: 200
Bus parking permits for today: 1200

          • H0mer0

there was no way they could have had 700K yesterday with all those empty stands when the National Mall overfloweth today.

        • bbayliss

I just got 500,000 in washington.
At this point all that matters is there were substantially more people out today than yesterday.

        • GemlikeFlame

Folks, I’m not trolling.I’ve been looking at the attendance numbers for the last 12 hours, and these are the best and most consistent I’ve found. If anyone has a concrete source of attendance numbers I’d really like to have access to it, but the DC inaugural numbers are skewed. The protest numbers are much better behaved. I try to find patterns in these things, and that’s all I’m doing.

Make no mistake, I want Trump gone. I see a bunch of well-meaning people who are desperately trying to raise consciousness of what a terrifying situation this is. and I want their effort to have meaning. Congress is stacked against us and unless we can start recalling from the bottom we’re stuck with it.

My sister works for the Anti-Defamation League. They officially made a complaint and requested he stop using the dog-whistle anti-semitic term “America First” (it was used during WW2 to try to deny entry to Jewish refugees and is well known in the anti-Semitic community). Instead he’s making it a cornerstone of his administration, even using it in his inauguration speech. The anti-semites know exactly what he’s saying. The worst thing is he probably is oblivious. But Putin isn’t.

So a few months ago, she took an I’m With Her mug into the hardware store and put up a sign saying “No Sexism” after hearing customers say degrading things about Hillary Clinton. I had some sort of medium furred runt that lived on my shoulder. I got her when she was about five. She would get neurotic and furiously groom when too many people were around, but she had the silkiest fur ever, and would come running to me when I whistled at a certain pitch.

        • CatCafe de la Resistance

Our previous cat, Pokey, who was terribly skittish and only allowed my husband and me to pet him or even be in the same room as him, adored my husband, would run to the door when he heard his car come up the street, then jump up and ride around on his shoulder proudly. What a sweet little guy he was.

          • Jennifer R

I loved my little dear. Her eyes were oddly spaced, and despite being the size of say a 15 month of adolescent no other cat would ever try to assert any direct dominance over her. They might go around and eat from every dish all day to show who owns the food, but if she got near them or in their space the would just growl and run away and hide. I wonder what they were saying to each other, because it was funny watching a 20+ pound cat run from my 4 pound dear.

I could not see or hear any of the speakers. I wonder if they said or did anything interesting. I assume so because every now and then the crowd would cheer.

Definitely thousands of people. It’s possible there were more people there than attended Little Donnie’s coronation yesterday.

And, unlike some rallies, all the signs were spelled correctly!

Typical rush, yes, except it was already like this at Morse. By the time it got to Belmont they were 4 deep in the aisles and people sitting on laps. I finally couldn’t stand it and got off at Grand.

“I have said over and over and over that the Democratic constituency thinks this is a once every four year deal.

Want to change this country, all those marching today?

Come back and vote in the midterms, vote in your state legislative elections, vote for your town council and mayor and school board. Vote in the election for dog catcher if there is one because the Democratic dog catcher will find a home for the strays and the Republican will kill them,.

VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE and make sure you do that in 2020, make sure you march into the voting booths all across this country in 22 months and vote in a Democratic House and Senate.”

    Amen, brother.

Dan Rather Facebook post on the inauguration:

    Dan Rather
    And so it begins.
Of the nearly 20 inaugurations I can remember, there has never been one that felt like today. Not even close. Never mind the question of the small size of the crowds, or the boycott by dozens of lawmakers, or even the protest marches slated for tomorrow across the country. Those are plays upon the stage. What is truly unprecedented in my mind is the sheer magnitude of quickening heartbeats in millions of Americans, a majority of our country if the polls are to be believed, that face today buffeted within and without by the simmering ache of dread.
I have never seen my country on an inauguration day so divided, so anxious, so fearful, so uncertain of its course.
I have never seen a transition so divisive with cabinet picks so encumbered by serious questions of qualifications and ethics.
I have never seen the specter of a foreign foe cast such a dark shadow over the workings of our democracy.
I have never seen an incoming president so preoccupied with responding to the understandable vagaries of dissent and seemingly unwilling to contend with the full weight and responsibilities of the most powerful job in the world.
I have never seen such a tangled web of conflicting interests.
Despite the pageantry of unity on display at the Capitol today, there is a piercing sense that we are entering a chapter in our nation’s evolving story unlike one ever yet written. To be sure, there are millions of Donald Trump supporters who are euphoric with their candidate’s rise. Other Trump voters have expressed reservations, having preferred his bluster to his rival’s perceived shortcomings in the last election, but admitting more and more that they are not sure what kind of man they bestowed the keys to the presidency. The rest of America – the majority of voters – would not be – and indeed is not – hesitant in sharing its conclusions on the character and fitness of Donald Trump for the office he now holds.
The hope one hears from even some of Donald Trump’s critics is that this moment might change him. Perhaps, as he stood there on a grey, drab, January day, reciting the solemn oath of office demanded by our Constitution, as he looked out across what Charles Dickens once called the “city of magnificent intentions”, he would somehow grasp the importance of what he was undertaking. Perhaps he would understand that he must be the president of all the United States, in action as well as in word. Perhaps, but there has already been so much past that is prologue.
There is usually much fanfare around inaugural addresses. They are also usually forgotten – with some notable exceptions. I think today will be remembered, not so much for the rhetoric or the turns of phrase but for the man who delivered them and the era they usher us forth.
Mr. Trump’s delivery was staccato and there was very little eye contact as he seemed to be reading carefully from a teleprompter. His words and tone were angry and defiant. He is still in campaign mode and nary a whiff of a unifying spirit. There was little or nothing of uplift – the rhetoric of Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Kennedy, or Reagan. We heard a cavalcade of slogans and one liners, of huge promises to “bring back” an America – whatever that really means to many who look at our history and see progress in our current society.
The speech started with a message of an establishment in Washington earning riches on the back of struggling families across the country. It was an odd note, considering the background of many of his cabinet picks. President Trump painted a very dark picture of the current state of our nation, beset by gangs and drugs and violence, regardless of what the data shows. His words swelled with his economic populism and the nationalism of “America first.” The applause was sparse, and I imagine many more being turned off, even sickened, rather than inspired by what our new President had to say. President Obama looked on with an opaque poker face. One could only imagine what he was thinking.
It bears remembering that one never can predict the arc of a presidency. It is an office that is far too often shaped by circumstance well beyond its occupant’s control. Those challenges, wherever and however they may rise, now will fall on the desk of President Trump. We can only see what will happen. We hope, for the security and sanctity of our Republic, that Mr. Trump will respond to the challenges with circumspection and wisdom. Today’s rhetoric was not reassuring.
Our democracy demands debate and dissent – fierce, sustained, and unflinching when necessary. I sense that tide is rising amongst an opposition eager to toss aside passivity for action. We are already seeing a more emboldened Democratic party than I have witnessed in ages. It is being fueled by a fervent energy bubbling from the grassroots up, rather than the top down.
These are the swirling currents about our ship of state. We now have a new and untested captain. His power is immense, but it is not bestowed from a divinity on high. It is derived, as the saying goes, from the consent of the governed. That means President Trump now works for us – all of us. And if he forgets that, it will be our duty to remind him.

He is being reminded today. Bigly.

    • Résistance Land Shark

And a clear signal was sent to federal employees that public dissent would not tolerated after the National Park Service’s Twitter account posted pictures showing the crowd at Trump’s inauguration was far smaller than that which attended Barack Obama’s 2009 swearing-in. A memo was quickly sent that agencies within the Department of the Interior were to cease activity on Twitter. The posts in question were deleted, and the NPS returned to Twitter Saturday with an apology.

“We regret the mistaken RTs from our account yesterday and look forward to continuing to share the beauty and history of our parks with you,” the agency said, posting a picture of a buffalo with the message.

      • Brian

maybe you are correct and I am wrong. Maybe everyone involved today did work hard to get Hillary elected. And yes, she won the popular vote but she did not win the election. And I will admit, I did not do enough to try to get Hillary elected, because I live in a blue state. So, really, I’m criticizing myself as much as anyone.

Is It OK to say here that I would like the kale to die? DIE KALE DIE! YOU ARE GROSS!

          • Suttree

My cousin lives off of kale, I don’t think that she eats anything else. Fucking millennial. I’m ok with it in soup and stew. Other than that it’s pretty meh.

          • JustDon’tSayPeePee

I like to blanch it, chop it into salads with other stuff.

          • Suttree

I haven’t tried that. Another idea, thanks.

          • JustDon’tSayPeePee

Toast a cup of bulgur, then let it soak in 2 cups of hot liquid (chicken broth), that maybe you also blanched the kale in. Let the bulgur soak until the liquid’s gone. Dice some tomatoes, maybe let some diced onion soak in vinegar, chop the kale, along with maybe parsley, mint, basil, chard, whatever. Mix em all together, squeeze on lemon or lime juice. If it’s breakfast, I usually add some bacon and put a poached egg on top of each dish. But then I’ll put an egg on top of almost anything.

          • Suttree

Mmm that sounds tasty! Vinegar, poached eggs, and greens are an awesome combo!

          • JustDon’tSayPeePee

It’s just a little vinegar. The idea is to pickle the onions a little.
            I detect a little skepticism…

          • Suttree

Not at all! I loved vinegar and everything pickled. Simple greens with vinegar is a favorite of mine. Any sort of greens at all. This summer Lizzie and I were getting beets from the local farmers market. I didn’t let any of those greens go to waste!

The baker of the Trump inauguration cake has come forward with her story. She just replicated a picture that was given to her. The Trump ‘people’ even fooled her into baking a plagiarized’ cake. She wasn’t told it would be THE cake. rofl.

In an instagram post, Tiffany MacIsaac, owner of Washington’s Buttercream Bakeshop, posted a photo and explanation.

According to an interview with the Washington Post, MacIssac got a call from a client asking the bakery to recreate the 2013 inauguration cake. She told them that she would prefer to use it as inspiration, but she told the Post that the client insisted on replicating it.

She said that she did not want to discriminate against the client, but that she would be donating the money from the cake to the Human Rights Campaign.

“I’m a small-business owner and one of the things I’m very, very proud about is that I don’t discriminate,” MacIsaac told the Post. “I would never turn someone away based on their age, their sex, their sexual orientation, their political views. It’s just not the way we operate.”The baker of the Trump inauguration cake has come forward with her story.

Why aren’t they just marching? This is about far more than abortion rights. This is about the future of the country. Just fucking march and stop trying to make it about you! Freakin anti-choicers are such attention whores.

        • IOnlyLikeCats

I was thinking the same thing. Of course you were drowned out and had to retreat you were trying to co-opt other people’s stuff, do you know how tired LGBT and or women of color are of that crap? Not today.

        • bupkus23

Maybe some should try to join the anti-abortionists’ annual march next week ( Jan 27th ) – then complain that they weren’t invited

          • HazooToo

Cept no one really wants an invite. They only march for taking rights away, not supporting them.

      • Carpe Vagenda

They weren’t uninvited. It’s a public march. They were uninvited to be sponsors.

        • IOnlyLikeCats

Super positive vibe, Wonkette’s own Zippy doing the sound for the music/speaker stage. LIttle Donnie used remarks at CIA to deliver part of his stump speech and claim the 250K people who showed up for the inaugural were actual 1.5 million. This explains why he thinks there’s no problem with the size of his hands and other body parts.

    • Scrofula

Also, why is he telling CIA? They’re still not “allowed” to operate domestically, so far, if he meant for them to “take out” the media or something.
“You, intern with the foreign newspapers, go assassinate the head of CNN!”

      • shivaskeeper

I commented below. He has been publicly feuding with an agency that knows where all the bodies are buried. That is not a good place to be. I think, as far as that word applies to him, that he was trying to make amends. But he started talking about himself and wandered around a bit. I don;t think he accomplished whatever he was there to do.

        • Scrofula

Funny how his “jokes” don’t go over so well with a crowd of professionals.

          • shivaskeeper

Nope. The flippant comment about maybe we’ll get to go back into Iraq and take the oil this time didn’t go over too well. Also, too, the audience was supposedly volunteers who came in on their day off to be there, so I can assume they were supporters and only supporters.

Ran out to get coffee & smokes. I’m a regular at the corner store, and sometimes chit-chat with the clerks a bit. Talking politics with strangers is fraught with risk, but I figured a black woman working in a convenience store was unlikely to be a Trump voter.

So I told her I had gone to the rally this morning. She was interested, and said she wanted to go, but had to work. Told her about the 2 – 3 hundred at the Statehouse, then the 900 at the indoor venue. At that point, she said she was glad they had a good turnout. I said, oh, I’m not done yet! and told her about the mass migration I witnessed. She positively started GLOWING, and I thought her smile was going to wrap all the way around her head!

I felt good about sharing. I felt good about making her day. And I feel good about the fact that she now knows that I am An Ally.

why is the “president” meeting with the CIA “breaking news” seems like that’s not some that should be news. Also, CNN saying something Trump said is “contrary to the facts,” then breaking right to commercial is annoying. Just say he’s lying!!

Wish the editrix would appear so I could turn of this channel and resume my regularly scheduled broadcasts.

    • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

i read an article arguing that a liar and someone saying something that is “contrary to the facts” are not necessarily the same thing.

I hate to defend this living butterball – but the argument was lying implies an intent to deceive (which I find VERY likely with this nut)…when the person could be just stupid or uninformed.

Frankly I’m with you, but I found that argument persuasive.

      • Sister Artemis

What Dok said, and you can also get to the URL by clicking the More option (upper right corner arrow-thing drops a menu down) and choose “copy link to tweet” – that puts in in your clipboard, and you can paste into a post, a facebook update, an email, etc.

        • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

i noticed earlier there also seems to be a copy link and embed link, I think disqus treats them the same, but I could be wrong.

        • Pierre_de_Fermat

It *looks* to do that, but have usually had to put both the full URI — including “https” and another without. And it never displays, just has the link (the one without “https:”). But “VagendeanceIsBestServedCold” did display .. the first time I have seen it on this browser (so *yes* prob a browser setting).

      • I just copied the embed link from Twitter. It doesn’t look very good. I keep wondering how others get tweets to post without all the extra garbage.

      • Carpe Vagenda

It also helps if you link to the non-mobile twitter site. Which you can do by deleting “mobile.’ if your browser can’t force a connection.

      • Shan

I’m seriously thinking about getting cable back for this stuff.

        • Markuserektus

          You Toob clips r free…

          • Shan

            They’re not LIVE though!

      • They always do. I wonder if the Don realizes that it is one thing for a private citizen to tweet about how awful a show is, but quite another thing for a president to do it? Like, potentially illegal. . .

        • Shan

Funny how wingnut snowflakes are always sniveling about censorship. Well, here it comes.

        • SnarkON

It’s not even remotely potentially illegal for a president to criticize a TV show. Stupid and embarrassing, sure.

          • Depends on how you look at it. Criticize? No. To endorse or not endorse? That is getting into trickier territory. The president isn’t supposed to attempt to influence the business market. Especially a market where he holds a significant stake. …Mind, it would be silly of him to attack his *ahem* other employer (since he still holds a position at NBC), but he is in that industry, and that network, up to his neck.

Besides, it’s just so childish of him, also, too.

    • SnarkON

Was at the parade earlier and we were all talking about how upset Trump must be to realize that every person in NYC hates him. Total rejection by the cool kids. Ha ha ha.

      • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

lol – they were STILL marching and it looked packed at 5 PM!

  • Jonny On Maui

What a pleasant march. Police presence was 2 traffic cops keeping people and cars moving without bumping into each other. A great day!

        gravity upside down there!

    • Sister Artemis

Oh Jonny! We watched the video from MauiNow earlier – I’m with a longtime Lahaina ex-pat, living here on the Oregon coast now. I really enjoyed the segment, especially the first 5 minutes or so where they are talking about how the march sort of spring out of a Pantsuit Nation post from Hana.

I missed Ms. Editrix because I just got home from the local “March of the Libtards”™. Is the clip going to be posted on the Electric Wonkette Interweb at some point?

    • Suttree

      I would assume so.

    • snark-lurker

if not there will be much tearing of hair hear

    • SnarkON

      LOL March of the Libtards.

      • Shan

        Right?! I love it!

    • JustDon’tSayPeePee

Stupid libtards. March is, like, the month after next. It’s like they don’t even look at the date on their Obamaphones anymore.

I live about 3 hours south, so when I saw the weather coming through decided not to chance it in my little Focus. Hwy 54 sucks in the best weather, snow is a no-go for me. Was with you all in spirit though.

I don’t want to piss on the literal parade, so I won’t quote any of it, but if you want to false equivalency, sniveling sucking up to Trump, and infuriating both-sides-are-equal – check out this CNN story on “How big was the crowd”-gate.

NEW YORK CITY IN THE HOUSE. To get a sense of the density at our protest, this is about 1/10th of a city block, and the protest went on for blocks and blocks and blocks in every direction. Wall to wall people as far as the eye could see. Everyone polite, friendly, engaged, talking, laughing, sharing snacks, bonding and having a fantastic time. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/c66c8c22fb36794cbb473f6401b441763ffb1983cbed52405bfe704bd6b9d577.jpg

      • SnarkON

Don’t forget the drug deals. People snorting coke off of hookers’ asses. Full-on orgies right out there in broad daylight. Gay guys buttfucking each other. Just a typical day here in Gotham.

I was obviously on the wrong block.

  • Pinkham’s Law

An update in the ongoing saga of Conversations With My Brother:

I should mention that he is nearing what should be a pretty comfortable retirement, and is
about to buy his last home, in a little town about 15 miles outside of
    Columbia. It’s relevant.

He, again, stated his intention of changing his party affiliation. He then went on a little rant about how it drives him nuts to see incumbents running unopposed, and that it’s crossed his mind to toss his hat in the ring against some of them. He then told me to not be surprised if, in a few years, he’s running for County Council or something . . . .as a Democrat!! Mind. Blown.

  • Hellhathnofury Demme

Just got back from the Sacramento March.
Heard there were 20,00 (but might have been more).
Mom and I wanted to cry when we saw so many at the march.
    Favorite sign: “Viva la Vulva!!”
Favorite pic: Gorgeous and elegant Miss Black Sacramento (sash, crown, and all) next to a huge, bald man wearing a “This is what feminism looks like” T-shirt.
(You could almost see the politicians salivating, looking at all the activists.)

    • Jennifer R

Where was the sac march? I don’t really do crowds so I didn’t go but I am quite interested in details.

      • JustDon’tSayPeePee

Off topic but how are your river levels? Another big one coming in tonight, they say.

        • Jennifer R

I took video last week of the American River up over part of the walking trail that abuts some sort of water monitoring station and CSUS, it’s spent this week mostly back where it usually is however.

      • Hellhathnofury Demme

        At the State Capitol Building.
Should be on the local news, (there sure were a lot of cameras!).

Wow! This is a big fucking deal!

    • No, it isn’t. It’s just the lying media lying, again. Crowds were much biglier at the Inauguration. Trump said so at the CIA, because that’s exactly the kind of thing one should be saying at a speech at the CIA. Nothing weird, here. Move along. . .

Yep. If they thought she was going to run and hide, I think they’re in for a shock.

      • Pierre_de_Fermat

Yeah. They’re idiots, and at some primitive level know their cult leader is a fraud. So they must revile his opponent all the more. They feel better that way.

      • Edith Prickly

        Sad, weak , low-energy losers.

It wasn’t voluntary. It was the comment at the very top when I went to copy the link.

  • SmokinGood

Just made it home from the London rally. I don’t know shit about estimating crowd size, but my rough guess is “clearly bigger than a SEC football game”. I was somewhere in the middle, and I never had any idea where the front or the back of the march was at.

  • suziq

Yes, I am a chick that loves Van Jones.

    • SnarkON

Actually, assuming you consider yourself a person and not a thing, you are a chick “who” loves Van Jones. (Also, why?)

      • suziq

You are correct, my grammar was wrong. I am tired, marched this morning and now I have been drinking too much so I will likely make another mistake. I think Van is a nice guy and smart. He didn’t say much today and at first I thought he was apologizing for what Madonna said but it was the jerks that were rioting last night which is not cool and bad and wrong and they shouldn’t do that. I would say there are people I love more than Van Jones but I appreciate any sane person these days.

On a practical level, wonder if this might have some timely knock-on effect. Namely, reversing the odious LePen’s momentum? Hmmm.

    • JustDon’tSayPeePee

“Odious LePen” sounds like a good name for a Lemony Snicket character.

  • Spotts1701, Resistance Pilot

Reno, NV checking in – the original estimate was about 2,200 people were going to show up.

    We got 10,000.

    Lots of great signs:

    “Viva la Vulva!”
“Dear 1%: You got 99 problems, and this bitch is one!”
“Tinkle, tinkle little czar. Putin put you where you are.”
“My students shouldn’t be afraid of the President,”
“A perv, a con artist and a fascist walk into a bar. The bartender says ‘What’ll it be Mr. President?'”
“I’m too worried to be funny.”

Tons of “A woman’s place is in the Resistance”, “Resistances/Rebellions are built on hope!”, “We shall overcomb”, etc.

This is the shot of the downtown plaza where we finished:

The entire seven years I lived there it never went above freezing from mid-December to mid-March. Tell me again that global warming is made up.
