WHO AM I? WHY AM I HERE?
WHO AM I? WHY AM I HERE?

If you weren’t reading The Economist and watching your C-SPAN Tuesday night like a proper political nerd, you might have missed the Senate confirmation hearing for Donald Trump’s insane nominee to head the Department of Education, Betsy DeVos, whose only qualifications for the post seem to be that her mega-rich wingnut family literally shits million dollar gold bricks into the coffers of the Republican party and other conservative causes, and also just that she’s a complete know-nothing wingnut. She doesn’t believe in public schools, her family fights for the wholly discredited and harmful practice known as “conversion” therapy for gays, oh, and did we mention that her brother is unhinged nutcase Erik Prince, head of the demonic death squad mercenary firm what used to be known as Blackwater?

All the Senate Democrats on the committee came prepared, but whoa holy shit, when we say they came prepared, we mean like WHOA HEY WHOA HEY.

Ready for your enjoyable Wednesday morning video time? Yes, you are!

Let’s start with Al Franken, because if you only watch one of these videos, you need to watch our good old friend You’re NOT Good Enough, You’re NOT Smart Enough, And Doggone It, I Don’t Think Anybody On This Panel Would Piss On You If You Were On Fire, Not Even A Russian Hooker. Yep, he Reverse Stuart Smalley-ed her! In the first half, Franken exposed that DeVos has no idea what the difference is between measuring students based on “proficiency” or “growth,” noting that it’s an argument that’s been going around in the educational community for years and years, and adding, “It surprises me that you don’t know this issue.” He later added, “I’m not surprised that you did not know this issue.” DANNNNNNNG!

Then Franken swiftly pivoted to the DeVos family’s long support for anti-gay causes and “conversion” therapy, and oh by the way, called her out on lying about the increase in student debt. LOL!

How’s about some Elizabeth Warren? She’s always fun! Warren began by saying all her nice colleagues had done a very nice job showing everybody how DeVos knows nothing about K-12 schools, so she figured she’d show everybody what a moron DeVos is when it comes to higher education. Warren noted that the secretary of Education has a responsibility for overseeing a “trillion-dollar student loan bank,” as well as $30 billion in Pell Grants, then asked the following questions, RAPID FIRE:

  • “Do you have any direct experience in running a bank?”
  • “Have you ever managed or overseen a trillion-dollar loan program?”
  • “How ’bout a BILLION-dollar loan program?”
  • “Have you ever taken out a student loan from the federal government to help pay for college?”
  • “Have any of your children had to borrow money in order to go to college?”
  • “Have you had any personal experience with a Pell Grant?”

Warren’s responses to all DeVos’s bad answers were “Uh HUH!” and “OKAY!” and we bet Ms. DeVos was thinking in her brain, “WHAT A NASTY WOMAN!”

AND WARREN WASN’T DONE. We’re actually going to transcribe this bit:

WARREN: Let’s start with the basics. Do you support protecting federal taxpayer dollars from waste, fraud and abuse?

DEVOS: Absolutely.

WARREN: Oh good, so do I! Because now we all know that President-elect Trump’s experience with higher education was to create a fake university, which resulted in his paying $25 million dollars to students that he cheated. So I’m curious how the Trump administration would protect against waste, fraud and abuse at similar for-profit colleges. So here’s my question: How do you plan to protect taxpayer dollars from waste, fraud and abuse by colleges that take in millions of dollars in federal student aid?

DEVOS: Senator, if confirmed, I will certainly be very vigilant …

WARREN: Yeah, I’m asking HOW.

And Elizabeth Warren actually did the gesture where you rotate your hand quickly like “GET TO THE POINT QUICKER, SO I CAN SHOW EVERYBODY HOW STUPID YOU ARE.”

Just freaking watch it:

After the hearing, DeVos tried to shake Warren’s hand, and Warren was all “PSYCH!” and wouldn’t do it!

Hey look, it is Sen. Tim Kaine, who was supposed to be your vice president, until Russia and Wikileaks and the FBI decided to make a different choice for America. Kaine asked a very simple series of “yes” or “no” questions, about whether disabled kids should be equally protected in schools, or should they be treated like shit? BETSY DEVOS AIN’T KNOW!

What about guns in schools? Should they be there? Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut wanted to know! YES, DeVos said, you probably do need guns in school sometimes, TO PROTECT CHIRRENS FROM GRIZZLE-BEARS IN WYOMING! Sen. Murphy responded by essentially daring her to come to Connecticut (COUGH NEWTOWN COUGH) to talk about how awesome guns in schools are.

Want to watch Bernie Sanders go ape-crackers on Betsy DeVos? Of course you do! He just wants to know whether she even thinks she would be sitting there if she wasn’t a mega-gabillionaire whose family has given $200 million to the Republican party. MEOW.

There are probably many more videos we missed, and you can share them in the comments! (As if comments are even allowed.)

The point is that the Democrats were SO FUCKING MEAN to Betsy DeVos and we are kind of in love with them right now, and this is how we expect them to act the entire time Donald Trump is president, and also after that.

I read on the internets that DeVos is going to make Newt Gingrich Asst. Secretary in charge of Janitorial Services and put Eric Prince (her brother) in charge of school security.

    • Oblios_Cap

The scary part about that is it sounds like something she might do.

      • YoNastyBunny

        SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

*loud whisper voice* You’re giving them IDEAS!!!!

  • Blackest Noobs

it really was pretty horrible…like this lady shouldn’t be ANY WHERE near the Dept of Education by any means.

but regardless, shitbag shrilled Republicans will give her an UP vote.

    • Bub the Hoohah! loving Zombie

I can’t believe some evil bastards would want to have a gun in school because of that poor guy…

    • Hairstrike Alpha

      So like us….

Man. That bear has to be realllllly careful what wid the claws and all.

Proficiency. Growth, two great tastes that taste great together….

BTW, love how she got grilled on her $10 million in donations to Anti LGBT hate groups….

  • ManchuCandidate

Now Betty DeVos knows what it’s like to be Trumpf Pee Hooker.

  • Martini Ambassador

She’s completely bonkers and completely unqualified. But she’ll probably get the confirmation anyway, because at this point, GOP is just ratfucking all of us.

  • Michael Smith

Donald Trump is President now, Libtards!!! Get over it!! You need to support all of his cabinet picks or you are proving that you are the traitors, subversives, communists and Muslims that you are!!

    • CogitoErgoBibo

And they gave us both a girl-part cabinetcritter plus a blah cabinetcritter. WHAT MORE DO WE WANT?!

    • tomamitai

You forgot perverts, atheists, and cucks! I feel so left out!

  • Hairstrike Alpha

That was awesome but you know the GOP is going to confirm her…. $200 million means she could be Mary Kay Letourneau and the GOP would hump her leg

    • Aaron Headly

Yup. It is probably impossible to shame the GOP into good behavior at this point. I’m glad Franken and Warren and Kaine and Sanders made it clear what is happening, but they won’t be able to stop it.

      • Stulexington

I am glad the Dem are at least setting up future “told ya so” moments.

        • OddMan

When we crawl out of the destructive mess that is the rubble of America (metaphorically and actual reality), I will be saying “told ya so” but somehow I don’t think it will feel very good.

    • Stulexington

I bet Trumpsters are so glad they kept corruption out of politics.

    • Suttree

The GOP couldn’t care less about child welfare, unless it is their kid.

      • Jonny On Maui

Cuz they want to do the humping of their own kids…

Have it done right under god’s watchful eye…

        Sorry. Gotta go puke now…

    • LucindathePook

Well, they do hang out together.

  • Anna Rompage

Is there anyone who Trump picked to fill a cabinet position that isn’t totally inept and bat shit crazy?

    • Antonin Dvorak

Mattis is against torture, and Haley can at least be reasoned with, but that is about it.

      • Nounverb911

Haley’s international diplomacy experience is limited to picking up a new BMW from the BMW factory in SC.

        • Antonin Dvorak

          Point taken.

          • Jeffery Campbell

OT: I’m working my way thought the Dvorak piano pieces and they are lovely. I’m sure you wanted to know that.

        • Shibusa

Haley also went to Moo U. (I didn’t know that until recently.)

          • Nounverb911

Yeah, I knew that, I try not to think about it though….

      • Anna Rompage

Haley, you mean the person who just came out with a rabid response against the UN resolution on Israeli settlement building in Palestinian territory?

Look, I’m all for Israel having their own state, but building on Palestinian lands is akin to the US building on Native American Reservations without permission. It is both immoral, and illegal!

        • Antonin Dvorak

I actually didn’t know about that.

          • Anna Rompage

No worries, it just came out yesterday, and was back page news…

          • eka

seems like everything important is back page news these days …

      • CB

Mattis is also the only person who can stop Mr. Trump from launching a nuke at Melbourne… so… Reason for hope!

    • MynameisBlarney

      Apparently not.

    • NastyBossetti

You must not have heard that Americans want people with no experience in anything leading everything, because people with experience are just the establishment, and Donald Trump and all his rich friends are anti-establishment, which is what we need right now to bring us change. Change is the only thing that matters, whether or not that change is objectively good.

      • Bub the Hoohah! loving Zombie

I think that has been conclusively established, yes.

      • Oblios_Cap

I always take my truck to the guy who paints houses when it needs fixin’. I don’t want anybody with experience working on it.

        • YoNastyBunny

Yeah, they totally start telling you all about all that stuff that needs to be “replaced” and “fixed” and shit. They just wanna mooch, amiright???

      • Shibusa

As it turns out, anti-establishment really means pro-oligarchy.

        • tomamitai

Blatantly pro-oligarchy instead of faux progressive, you mean?

Rumble, grumble, fetch me a tumbril!!!!

          • eka

yeah, except that faux progressive still gets you marriage equality, defence of first sale doctrine, a better healthcare system and an administration that actually believes in working with other countries, among many other things.

not perfect, but i’d go for faux-progressive in a heartbeat.

          • tomamitai

I did too, also, but I can still hope for better!

      • OneYieldRegular

It’s true! Why not give incompetent people a chance? All the elites are all like, “Oh, but you have to have training and expertise,” but who’s to say that Joe the Plumber can’t just walk off the street and run a trillion dollar program or be a federal judge or run a nuclear power plant, hunh?

        • NastyBossetti

If experts are so smart, how come my life sucks?!

          • willi0000000

            ^^^^^THIS!^^^^^

    • Stulexington

That ex general dude who may not get confirmed because he’s an ex general and the senate really doesn’t like the military having a say in policy.

      • Shibusa

Also too: Just a week ago, Team Trump pulled the plug on Mattis testifying before the Senate committee. According to WaPo, Mattis has rejected large numbers of candidates offered up by the transition team for several DoD top posts. Probably because they were all grossly unqualified.

        • Stulexington

But I’m sure they had great optics, the best, they all looked like really good picks for DoD and really that’s all that matters right?

        • Celtic_Gnome

But, they all looked just like Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper.

      • Thiazin Red

        Yeah, Mattis seems surprisingly okay.

    • tomamitai

Well Chao was Deputy Sec Of Transportation under Shrub, so she should at least know where the offices are and such not.

    • GemlikeFlame

I believe that the majority of the first cabinet picks are only there to get knocked down to be replaced by someone lower profile, more competent, and sinister who won’t be as easy to displace. While the Democratic congressfolk’s attention is focused on confirmations, other stuff is going on in the background that may be far more malignant. We’re outnumbered by a collection of monsters who publically abandoned any pretense to ethics years ago and sadly have a significant number of electorate supporting them.

I’m sorry, I’m all out of snark. It’s good that it amuses us, but it has no effect on people who wouldn’t know irony if it walked up and bit them on the ass. But I do have to ask… where is the decency and why aren’t we demanding it from this administration?

      • Historicat

Decency went out to get some milk on November 9 and hasn’t been seen since.

        • Celtic_Gnome

Someone should have asked this: “You don’t seem to know much about what you’ll need to do for this job. Who will run things while you learn what you’re supposed to do?”

    • Stulexington

But doing things haphazardly and then putting out easily preventable fires is the best way to make policy, just ask the Republicans.

  • OddMan

Asking the tough questions, and getting these answers should disqualify her. But will this?
Can the Dem’s stop her confirmation? Can they stop any?

  • Hairstrike Alpha

Can’t Dems block this nomination by placing a hold on it? At this point, I’d rather see the position empty.

    • Reddishrabbit

For some reason I doubt GOP fidelity to tradition when up against 200 million in donations

      • At the crossroads, stay strong

I think $200 million in donations is right in there with the GOP fidelity to the GOP tradition toward rich donors.

    • At the crossroads, stay strong

Even if she’s (((shudder))) confirmed, the position will still be empty.

      • Nah, she’ll do everything she can to make things worse, at least an empty chair can only fuck up Clint Eastwood’s reputation.

Well, you certainly got me scratching my head. Triple parentheses refers to people of the Jewish persuasion? This is news to me. I was just going for emphasis. Could you aureolaborealisplain that for me?

          • aureolaborealis

It’s neo-nazi code for Jew (or whatever other word they would use). It allows the expression of anti-semitism in mixed company without everyone immediately knowing.

Yeah, fucking “education establishment”! Let’s get all those smartypants teachers and other establishment rabble out of there. Who wants to be taught by people thinking they know more about anything than you do? Condescending shits.

  • NastyBossetti

There’s a guy in my area suing the school district because he thinks they are too good and public schools should suck because only rich people have earned the right for their kids to have a good education. I think he’d make a better Secretary of Education than this person. At least he’s thought about it and is clear and honest about his intentions.

  • House0fTheBlueLights

Imagine a male nominee smiling like that through a hearing. You’d think he was a fucking psychopath.*

*I believe that DeVos is a psychopath, but in this instance I think it’s a very skin crawling example of how women, even powerful women, are trained to smile no matter what.

    • CogitoErgoBibo

We also pathologically apologize for everything, whether or not we were in the wrong. A guy can barrel into me full-speed and I’ll reflexively say, “I’m sorry.” If only Republicans could learn a bit of that.

    • Thaumaturgist

If you were from West Michigan, you would imagine men smiling like that. It’s not a woman’s smile, it’s a congenital Dutch smile.

Only watched Warren so far, but DAMN, DeVos looks like a fool. Can’t wait to watch the rest this evening. Gotta get some work done today.

  • Timothy Dolan

Being from Michigan, there is no way I’d want Betsy DeVos anywhere near education, but this whole video is too much. It’s only Democrats really saying anything, and in the end she will still end up as Secretary of Education. The way Republicans and Democrats treat each other in this country, even in the language of the article, is just sad. If only one side can be right, how the hell are we ever gonna fix anything?

    • TJ Barke

Weak concern trolling, low energy, sad!

      • Timothy Dolan

        What?

    • At the crossroads, stay strong

Um, were you paying attention the last eight years as to how the Republicans dealt with anything put forward by a Democrat? When a Republican member of Congress yells “You lie!” while his president is speaking, it speaks volumes about the general conservative attitude towards Democrats. Democrats have this nasty habit of bringing up actual facts about things and get rebuffed by ‘the other side’. Fie on them, I say!

    • NastyBossetti

If we keep acting like every single thing can be compromised on, how are we ever going to fix anything? Sometimes, only one side can be right because that’s how facts work. Some things are more than a mere difference of opinion.

      • Timothy Dolan

You are absolutely right, and not everything can be compromised on. The problem is where is the line drawn? Where are the republicans and democrats saying “Well clearly I am wrong on this….”. They are no where because no side wants to be wrong. You compromise here and there, so that you don’t have to elsewhere. Regardless of which side you are on, we live in a hugely diverse country of 330 million people spread out across 50 distinctly different states facing vastly different problems. When your world is that big and diverse, compromise is just part of life.

        • Historicat

          You can’t compromise on reality.

If we both see that there’s a problem and I want to fix it one way and you want to fix it another, maybe we can reach an acceptable compromise. If I see there’s a problem and you don’t, there’s not much room for compromise. And if I see a problem as “the house is flooded” and you see a problem as “we need to increase the water flow rate” then there is no room for compromise at all.

I would like to point out to Sen. Warren and her ilk that while Betsy DeVos hasn’t had any direct experience running a bank, she has more money than most banks, and she has lots of experience running her family’s portfolios. And such. Which, why do you think Trump nominated her in the first place?

  • Bitter Scribe

There was one Democrat who wasn’t mean to her…

Joe Lieberman, the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2000, introduced DeVos Tuesday and vouched for her leadership, arguing that her status as an outsider is an asset.

Why the fuck doesn’t this guy just get it over with and become a Republican?

I think, of all the things I do not like about the modern Republican party, the core from which my distaste grows is the deliberate embrace of ignorance; the insistence that one person’s ignorance is just as good and valuable (or even better) than another person’s experience and education. “Let’s bring in an outsider who can truly make a difference!” I can tell you, I would make a lousy president, governor, or senator. You name the political position of leadership, and I am admittedly wholly unqualified to hold it. I should therefore be a shoe-in for the next election cycle. I’ve always thought that the Doctor was totally in the wrong for not destroying the Daleks when he had the chance. He knew with 100% certainty what would happen, that countless people would be killed.

      • He’s had several opportunities to do it, Tom Baker had a very big crisis of conscience on screen when he was about to. And if the War Doctor is any indication, it would have been too much for his psyche to bear.

        • Thiazin Red

With the War Doctor it would have meant destroying both species (and I’m so glad Moffat made it clear that not every time lord was cartoonishly evil, like in End of Time). But in Genesis, no one else would have been hurt, just the Daleks.

          • thewendyb

Don’t play stupid. By publicly making her incompetence obvious, these hearings make it MORE LIKELY that people will call in mass numbers, demanding their representatives NOT SUPPORT such obvious incompetence. This ACTUALLY WORKS and changes the actions of those representatives. Read “Indivisible” and use it. Bit by bit, vote by vote, we drag them into right action.

        • House0fTheBlueLights

A no vote, even when you know that the other side has the votes to override you, is NOT the same thing as “rubber stamp.” Losing is not the same as colluding. Minority does not mean weakness. Shall I go on?

I come from a long line of teachers, including my grandmother, mother, sister and brother-in-law. I’m glad my Mom is retired, but my sister and brother-in-law are scared shitless of this lady. She has used her considerable resources to run Michigan’s school systems directly into the ground with an almost malicious aim. She couldn’t be worse for education than if she were advocating teaching that the basis of mathematics is 1+1=4.
My brother-in-law and I are already joking about setting up a for-profit charter school, because if she’s going to ratfuck us, we’ll take her money and actually teach kids.

  • Ilgattomorte

Wow! I think I was most surprised by the “proficiency vs. growth” question. I was sure she’d get that one, because the example is so close to her own personal experience.

Proficiency refers to ability, as in “I’m a rich bitch that doesn’t know anything, so I am not proficient”. Whereas growth refers to progress, as in “The 800 million that Daddy gave me has now grown to 2 Billion, and that money is proficient as hell”.

Yep, I’m surprised she couldn’t figure that one out.

    • laineypc

It’s called doing your homework. Apparently not necessary for the Secretary of Education. OTOH, the school she graduated from, Calvin College, is a Bible school no more. Even the Dutch are capable of rational thought and genuine intellectual effort, however much some of them may resist it.

I say confirm them all. Apparently the only way Americans recognize a pile of shit is to set it on fire and I think Lady Devos is good contender to make that happen!

    Let’s light this candle!

A big bright fire to illuminate the ballots for 2018.

    • Yes, but she will actively work to make kids dumber, so they might not be able to recognize a flaming bag of shit going forward.

not only that – a lot of parents want their kids to get a crappy education because teaching evolution is evil.

      • nightmoth

Yes. Where I am the public schools are bad enough already–askeert to say “evolution” or “Civil War” and that, IMO, is one of the biggest reasons our public school graduates voted for Cheeto.

      • Crystalclear12

Currently, the largest daycare providers in this country are the schools. You take that away and reality sets in real quick.

    • Anna Rompage

“She was born with a silver foot in her mouth”
–The Late Great Anne Richard (paraphrased)

    • The Return of Traxley

Aside from her husband’s disastrous 54 million dollar losing gubernatorial campaign not long ago, and perhaps their failed attempte to franchise the bloated cultural cash cow known as ArtPrize, the DeVos clan has never experienced defeat in anything.

Here in Grand Rapids, they give to get on a massive scale. Everyone here knows what a racket Amway is, and I personally don’t know anyone in this town selling the shit. Yet the masses worship the DeVos and Van Andel families for throwing millions of dollars in the bucket along with taxpayer dollars to build municipal works — the only requirement is that these buildings have their names on them. It’s brand enhancement. Our arena, public museum, convention center, children’s hospital, cancer research center, and new college campus buildings are part of that. The lifesize bronze statues included. Question their ham-handed philanthropy in any way, and the masses howl and shame.

It’s delicious to see them shredded. Like the shitgibbon, they hate bad press and being told no. It’s a beautiful thing. Fun fact: The city of Grand Rapids itself actually leans deep blue; we voted for Obama twice, and our city leaders are diverse and fall on the liberal end of the political spectrum.

And as for conversion therapy, I’m throwing this old rumor out there: Unlike most of their offspring, very few leave GR as single adults to live in LA, discard the suit and tie, form a band and hang out with “artistic” friends for several years before abruptly moving back and suddenly transform into clean-cut, married conservatives.

      • almaalum

I’m from Grand Rapids too and I always marvel at where the money in Amway is coming from, but I think they’ve taking the con to Asia. That’s why I like the Meijer family – they support the arts and culture, the second (and maybe the third) generation could be found working in the stores, and they keep their politics to themselves.

        • The Return of Traxley

          Hi, there!

You’re absolutely right. Amway ran out of suckers here and pissed off the governments of Canada, Great Britain, and Germany (and maybe others), so much so that they tried to rename themselves “Quixstar” for a while. Their con is running out of marks.

Also, I enjoy the ‘fuck you’ irony in naming of the best small music venue and bar in the heart of downtown. “The Pyramid Scheme” is perfection on so many levels.

  • ViveLaPeésistance

Betsy probably likes Bible verses so I have an old favorite for her: “I’ll say it again–it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!” – Jesus (Matthew 19:24).Suck it, you sanctimonious old cow.

  • SayItWithWookies

Let’s not forget that funding predatory, fake schools is stealing from the poor and middle-class and giving to the rich, in addition to it being generational theft, because the less educated our children are, the worse their prospects will be for good jobs and the worse our economy will be.

That said, Republicans approve of DeVoss because she advocates the two types of wealth redistribution that they’re most in favor of.

  • therblig

all well and good, but i bet betsy can spot the bear in all those pengwings like a champ.

  • Silly, liberals, she doesn’t need to know nothin’ about no edumachation, she just needs to know enough to make sure the right folks get a nice big slice of the billions of dollars of government money that go towards public schools every year.

Those kids just need to learn enough to be useful as a cog in the machine of industry, after all.

  • nightmoth

That’s the first I’ve watched of any of the confirmation hearings–so, yeah, ABOUT TIME, DEMOCRATS! Too bad you weren’t all up in those smarmy lying GOP faces from 2008 onwards. Also, I just sent a mash note to President Obama and it made me feel slightly better to be able to say “President Obama” one more time. You, too, can thank him and Joe Biden at: https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact#page

  • Hypocrisy is in session…defund public education, point the finger at “failing schools,” take taxpayer money and funnel it into “good Christian schools” that reserve the right to teach your kids whatever the hell they so desire to, and to also not accept your poor kid into their program if they so choose.

Whine incessantly about public schools and colleges nationwide “indoctrinating our children to accept liberal culture,” whatever that means (it means racism and bigotry, that’s what it means). Meanwhile, accept that “indoctrinating our children to put the Intelligent Design theory on equal footing as Evolution in science curriculum” or “indoctrinating our children to believe that slaves were simply part of the American workforce in the 17 and 1800s” is totally OK.

Not that progressives have all the answers, but turning our education system into a religious indoctrination system sounds way worse than, I dunno, cutting waste from the DoD and flipping those wasted taxpayer dollars into increasing funds for public education, in particular schools that are failing or underperforming?

    • Tetsu Kaba

I can’t even…Did she think the shitgibbon was a good example on how not to prepare…WTF?!?

    • Lori

Even if she knew about it, it wouldn’t make any difference.

My nephew and his wife have a child with serious disabilities. He goes to public school, where’s he’s in an excellent program that supports him and allows him to do as much as he can. There is no way in hell that his parents could afford to pay for a comparable private program, even if their taxes dropped to zero. If DeVos gets her way and destroys public education their only choices will be for nephew’s wife to quit her job and stay home with him full time, in which case I’m not sure they could afford their house, or to warehouse him in some sort of special needs day care, assuming they can afford even that. If that happens the entire family will be up in arms and will rail against the injustice of it and go full-on “Won’t someone think of the children.”

Nephew and his wife are Republicans. In fact, I’m the only person in our family who didn’t vote for Trump.

      • sosuume

Significant numbers of poor damned souls who voted for Donald also oppose the right-wing agenda once they actually understand what it involves. Eventually, they will join us in opposing this mess. Our only hope is that it won’t be too late.

        • Lori

I wish I thought you were right about joining us in opposing all this, but based on the people I know I’m not hopeful. Their positions on culture war issues, especially abortion & marriage equality, are cast in cement. They’re also swimming in white privilege and more sexist and racist than they care to acknowledge. That keeps them firmly tied to the GOP.

They’ve spent so long saying that abortion is murder and any move toward equality is oppression of white dudes, and the thought of same-sex couples grosses me out so much, that they can’t publicly acknowledge that there are any issues that might be more important, even in the near-term. Doing so would mean that they’ve been played, and no one likes to look like a sucker in front of everyone.

If past behavior is any guide they will remain in denial for as long as possible and then find some way to blame the Democrats for all the stuff they don’t like.

          • sosuume

Lots of independents went for Trump, so even though the rabid GOP base won’t budge, these folks will, and so will some educated GOPers. I saw it in my district this election (Todd Akin’s old district in suburban St. Louis). I thought all I’d see would have been Trump yard signs. None. All Hillary (although the fools went ahead and re-elected Roy Blunt for senator and voted in the machine-gunning Greitens for governor -sigh).

          • Lori

Greitens is such an odd guy. He is in some ways incredibly interesting and seems intelligent, but he’s also a total wack-job. It’s disconcerting.

          • sosuume

He just proposed huge cuts to higher education & will make us a “right-to-work” state. Oh the joy.

  • Lefty Wright

A big problem is that you cannot point to her as an aberration. She is pretty much typical of all the Trump nominees and adviser positions. The few that may have some qualifications for actually running a cabinet level department or advising the president on US policy have very questionable motives. I’m not saying that Tillerson or Mnunchin are not intellectually qualified for their positions, but there are way to many conflicts of interest currently and in their past to put them in charge of those posts. There are only a couple of people in past GP teams, even in a Republican administration like Bush’s, that would have been considered. And Bush had a number of clueless, hyperpartisan or unqualified aides and cabinet picks. None quite so obvious as Trump’s.

    • CT14

      Like Ben Carson for HUD.

HUD is also a financial institution that provides nonrecourse loans for singly and multifamily development through FHA. Damn good programs that are a pain to get, but that’s because they are properly underwritten. Urban development doesn’t mean low income, either. It means building or rehabbing things like apartments, condos, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and even hospitals.

Ben Carson has absolutely no financing experience.

Carson’s black, though, so he’ll understand the “inner city” instinctively. Native American housing issues, too, no doubt.

Trump’s parents shipped the little piece of shit off to a military school as soon as they realized how truly awful he was , why wouldn’t that work for everyone ?

Well, it has “Urban” right in the name, amirite?!?

    • FLdispatches

Wimmins with lotsa cash, too. Even better!!

  • chortlingdingo

She probably thinks that teachers are overpaid too.

    • Doug Langley

Yeah, I was sure rolling in the dough from the adjunct position.

      • chortlingdingo

The adjunct system is a fucking disgrace. More and more universities are dropping tenured positions in favor of adjuncts because it’s cheaper, and yet university administration have 6-7 figure salaries.

        • zanzibar_buckbuck_mcfate

The Iowa House has a bill on the table that abolishes tenure.

          • chortlingdingo

            !!!

            That’s horrible!

          • zanzibar_buckbuck_mcfate

Iowa’s higher ed system is about to tank. We have a corrupt Board of Regents who placed a hand-picked corporate candidate with no academic administration in charge of the flagship state school, gutted the lab school from our regional state school with the reputation for being the best education program in the state, and now have a bill abolishing tenure and a budget slash for our (again, outstanding) community college system. It’s an embarrassment.

        • Kooolest G

how do you expect us to pay that new sports ball coach? and he said he’s only coming if we build him a new stadium

          • chortlingdingo

That’s probably what happened at Baylor. There’s a brand new (probably unspeakably expensive) stadium that they just finished out in Waco.

          • bbayliss

            Those who can, do.
            Those who can’t do, teach.
            Those who can’t teach, coach.

      • Dudleydidwrong

The difference between the adjunct position and the missionary position is that the latter is more honest, as I found out. Now the whole country will have that same experience.

    • She does. Her family is a well known anti teacher union pro charter school (and underpaid ‘teachers)

      • chortlingdingo

What does she think is really going to happen when people decide not to be teachers anymore because you can’t live on it? Church volunteer teachers perhaps?

        • Cliff Hendroval

Oddly enough, she also owns an online distance learning company. Funny, that.

I have never been happier to live on an Island of Blue. And they are building more and more here. My town is naturally a sanctuary city in one of the most diverse counties in the state. Friday, La Raza and other Hispanic/Latino groups are marching on Atlanta city hall to press the mayor to declare Atlanta as a sanctuary city. BLM is marching to protest the gentrification occurring on the west side of town, which is displacing black families.
      This weekend will be G L O R I O U S.

  • AnnieGetYerFun

Well, there goes my last objection against home schooling my kids. OK, technically my last objection is that I don’t want to spend that much time with them.

    • ahughes798

If I had reproduced, my sproggen would probably get secular home schooing, if there is such a thing. Reasons being: kids are little animals to each other. I’d like my kid not to be bullied. The second reason for home schooling would be that Trump and DeVos will dismantle the public school system, turning it into a voucher and charter school nightmare where kids are viewed as “product.”

      • Fun with Cthulhu

Secular home schooler here, it only takes about 2 hours a day to deliver an education far superior to the regular classroom. Eliminating all the going out and coming in and lining up saves time, plus one on one or one on two instruction is so much more efficient.

        • Nodrama4mama

If one was to homeschool, can you outsource the math and science to someone else? My math ability does not include Algebra and Geometry.

          • Fun with Cthulhu

Yes you can. We are in Canada and neither my wife nor I are proficient in French so we hired a tutor for both boys for a couple hours a week. Up till middle school math and science is not too difficult. We supplemented with visits to local rock collectors, astronomy club, trips to science center, etc.

        • ahughes798

I like the idea of kids spending less time in the classroom, yet still doing outdoor activities that are educational. Plus, as you mentioned, the individual attention by someone who knows their kids and what they need is great! I still think a gap year between high school and college is a good idea, too. Homeschooling just sounds less stressful for the kids, in general.

      • There is such a thing as secular homeschooling. I’m doing that. Theoretically, it was a temporary thing, but my oldest started college two years early and I’m not inclined to put the younger two back into the public schools with this fruitcake in charge of them, so it’s entirely possible that it will end up being a permanent thing.

But homeschooling is NOT just for religious whackos. Plenty of us have kids with special needs of some sort that just aren’t being met in school, or we got tired of science teachers that make a point of saying that they *have* to teach evolution but don’t believe in it, or our kids were traumatized by bullies, or any number of other reasons.

        • ahughes798

Good to know that there are secular homeschooling classes. It sounds like it’s tough to homeschool, but it also sounds like you’re doing a great job!

    • Nodrama4mama

Trump and the GOP: HRC giving access to top donors is pay to play corruption.
Trump offers 2 cabinet positions to his largest scampaign contributors who are both woefully inexperienced but insanely wealthy. GOP goes meh. Wonder if DeVos knows how to spell hypocrisy or make it a classroom requirement to study people who say one thing but do another.

  • FLdispatches

I am a product of the same exact schools as Betsy DeVos (not college, but through HS graduation). Grew up in same town, had my “prom” at Amway Grand Hotel, saw shows at DeVos Auditorium and Van Andel Arena, had some Prince offspring and elders work with my parents. The DeVos/Prince/VanAndel clan is s fixture in my childhood, right down to education.
But! Needless to say we are both factory output but one of us ended up super-SUPER rich, ideologically driven, inclined to machinations, radically free market driven, a collector of politicians, a master of manipulation, and a devotee of stocking up Kingdom Builders for the Lord.
(I am not the stocker of Kingdom Builders, obviously….)

          • FLdispatches

As all good MLMs know, only through using another’s bootstraps can one truly succeed.

    • Resistance Fighter MausFeet

Aw, hey fellow former Grand Rapidian! Isn’t watching a DeVos do this just bone chilling? Though I’m glad it’s not just my liberal family that raised me to distrust the trifecta of money that is The DeVos/Prince/VanAndel clan. I, however was raised by heathen Catholics so I went to different schools.

I didn’t really have anything to add, I just was happy to see someone else familiar with those families, as they’ve long been curse words to me and mine.

      • FLdispatches

I am from Holland, not that hedonistic heathenish town GR!! My Dutch soul is PURE, damnit, right down to the “dry laws” that ruin many a Sunday brunch what with the lack of mimosas and Bloody Marys. (But that’s what Saugatuck is for!)
And I totally relate to the VanVosPrince clan being a terrifying cursed group. I feel like I’ve spent yeaaaaars telling likeminded folk that the DeVosii will take it national and it will absolutely suck for non-super rich folk. Having Betsy be nominated for Ed Sec was NOT the way I envisioned the intro going, however. The whole west MI cabal and religious frenzy is really hard for “outsiders” to understand so I am always pleased to meet fellow survivors! I wasn’t Catholic, but I DID go to an RCA church, not a CRC, and we even had ladypastors so really it was as foreign as if we were Jewish, sometimes? And then I married an actual Jew! Go figure!

        • The Return of Traxley

Transplant from East Lansing here. When I arrived in GR thirty years ago to take a job with Meijer (before they turned into Walmart North), Grand Rapids stunned me with how clannish the people were. And then I stumbled into Jenison and Hudsonville — it felt like I’d gone back to the era of Prohibition and its morals.

It was only 20 years ago that I felt like I could call the city (not the suburbs) home. With the rapid influx of outsiders arriving daily here, it’s only a matter of time before the remaining old Dutch guard and their True Believer offspring find that only Caledonia, Hudsonville, Cedar Springs, and Ionia are the only safe spaces not overrun by the godless.

        • Resistance Fighter MausFeet

Oh man you are EXTRA SW MI with your Dutch self! My family still sometimes vacations on the big lake if and when we can. The Holland beach was our favorite when we were kids, though Grand Haven was a bit closer.

You nailed why I was all excited to see someone else from there. I moved from MI, and it was so weird initially to realize that the whole CRC vs Catholics, Dutch vs I guess non dutch? (Polish/German here),

Amway/VanVosPrince was specific to there and no one else knew or cared about it. Especially the religious weirdness of West Michigan – it’s still the only place I’ve ever gotten flack or insults for being a Catholic. So… did you actually find a Jewish person in MI, or did you have to move to meet your spouse, ha?

          • FLdispatches

Yep, I had to go all the way to Boston to find my husband – and he is from Florida, so his first visit to Holland was one giant WTF??? We had to live with my parents for the month before our wedding since we were getting ready to move to FL, and his head was nearly ready to explode. (When his side of the family descended from FL and NY/NJ, they couldn’t wrap their heads around the church-to-bar ratio.)

It is super hard to explain to “outsiders,” definitely. Even friend who are from MI but live outside of SWMI can’t quite grasp it. My parents moved away a couple years ago but we used to go see them every summer and stay there, and my girls would go to day camp, art classes, etc .From an early age they picked up on the whole “this isn’t quite like home, is it…” thing. I may have raised them to be be a bit suspicious, too…hmmmmm. It’s still a beautiful place, with the lake and charming houses and all that…but I’ll stick with visiting.
Anyway – living so far away I love encountering people who can truly understand the unique (uniquely grotesque?) position of the DeVosii. They are not quite like other local/regional wealthy families, but they’re not quite like the Kochs either. They’re their own special brand of billionaire religious extremists, and they LOVE sharing (as long as taxes and redistribution aren’t involved)!

          • Resistance Fighter MausFeet

Ditto on that whole last paragraph. It was so odd when I first moved to realize that SWMI is not the same as the rest of the midwest (and I kept on moving west and landed in CA). I miss the woods and lakes terribly, it’s a gorgeous state, and my extended family is all still there, but with each visit back I’m more sure I’m never moving back there.

          • FLdispatches

Oh hell yes. I’m actually spending a week there this summer while my kids are at camp, and it’ll be nice to see old friends and enjoy normal summer weather (okay, I take that back; who knows what it’ll be like – maybe 55 and rainy, maybe 95 and bone dry) but I’m sure it will reinforce for me alll the reasons I left. It’s entertaining to see national media try to portray SWMI etc., though…it must be lived live to be understood. mwahahahaha

This is truly insane! Warren and Franken and Bernie are clearly so much more intelligent and well-informed than this idiotic woman. “I will be vigilant.” GREAT! That’s not a strategy. I almost feel bad for how stupid she looks and sounds sitting there, but then I remember all the awful things she has done, stands for, and will do when in office.

Can someone explain to me when millions of Americans underwent lobotomies and began accepting the groundless assurances of Cheato and his gang of idiots? If you are over the age of 5, you tend to need more than “I’m a smart guy.” “I will make America great again.” “I will be vigilant.” Those are baseless promises! How can people accept them?!
