Electoral College Members Just Curious How Far Up Trump's Ass Russia Really Is
BFFs
We have finally reached a point, more than a month after the election, where the media and members of Congress are actually interested in getting to the bottom of just how much Vladimir Putin's Russia stole the election for Donald Trump. It's not that we didn't know any of this stuff before -- we knew lots of things ! We knew the Obama administration had publicly accused Russia of meddling with our democratic process, we knew Russia had hacked the DNC and John Podesta's emails, we knew thanks to great investigative reporting that Putin just might have been trying to cultivate Trump as an asset for years , and that there is a weird server in Trump Tower that only seems to communicate with a huge Russian bank. All weird stuff!
But now, since the CIA finally said "YUP Russia interfered for the purpose of getting Trump elected," and Republicans like John McCain and Lindsey Graham are calling for investigations, while Senate Democrats are calling on the Obama administration to declassify intel and inform the public what Russia has actually done, we are getting somewhere! Finally, at long last! Mitch McConnell is stepping up (sorta kinda) and saying, yeah buddy, Russia is not our friend and we should investigate them. And now, a group of electors, 10 of them to be specific, are calling on James Clapper, Director of National Intelligence, to give them a detailed intelligence briefing on just how much Russia's wang was in the heinie of Trump's campaign, you know, so they can make an Informed Choice. Here is some of the electors' letter:
We ... emphasize Alexander Hamilton’s assertion in Federalist Paper #68 that a core purpose of the Electoral College was to prevent a “desire in foreign powers to gain an improper ascendant in our councils.” The United States intelligence community has now concluded with “high confidence” that a foreign power, namely Russia, acted covertly to interfere in the presidential campaign with the intent of promoting Donald Trump’s candidacy. During the campaign Russia actively attempted to influence the election outcome through cyber attacks on our political institutions and a comprehensive propaganda campaign coordinated through Wikileaks and other outlets.
Allegations that Donald Trump was receiving assistance from a hostile foreign power to win the election began months before Election Day. When presented with information that the Russian government was interfering in the election through the course of the campaign, both in private briefings and public assessment, Donald Trump rejected it, refused to condemn it, and continued to accept their help. Donald Trump even made a direct plea to the Russian government to interfere further in the election in a press conference on July 27, saying, “Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing.”
The electors note that Trump's response to the CIA's report was to attack the CIA, probably because he's scared of what the agency actually has on him. They are asking for a full briefing on all investigations into Trump's Russian ties that may be going on, and they also need proof from Trump himself that he did not collaborate with Russia during the campaign. Will these electors get those things? Hahaha PROBABLY NOT, but the fact that they're calling for it in the first place says a lot about what's at stake on December 19 when the electors meet, and it sure enough keeps the story on the front pages, where it belongs.
The letter is signed by nine Democratic electors (including Christine Pelosi, Nancy Pelosi's daughter!) and one Republican elector, Chris Suprun of Texas, who has publicly stated that he cannot in good conscience vote for Trump.
Oh, and by the way, Hillary Clinton's campaign has sent its own letter of support for this effort, which is interesting since they've been pretty darn quiet up to this point. Here's the letter from Clinton campaign chair John Podesta:
They are like "HI! WE HAVE BEEN SAYING THIS, BUT YOU DIDN'T PAY ATTENTION BECAUSE SOMEHOW SPY STUFF ABOUT RUSSIAN INTERFERENCE WAS NOT AS SEXY OF A STORY AS EMAILS! SPILL IT, A-HOLES!"
Will any of this work? Only time will tell. But we sure enough will keep talking about it until the day Donald Trump is no longer a threat to our republic, God Bless America and Amen.
