Know who ELSE had a stubby weird penis, allegedly?

Idiot voters in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are pretty sure Donald Trump only said crazy shit on the campaign trail to be “provocative” and “controversial,” and he probably isn’t all that bad, and besides, we need somebody to go shake things up in Washington, because PFFFFFFFFFFFFT FUCK AMERICA IS WHY. Prove them wrong, why dontcha?

Reuters says the Trump transition team is talking about forcing Muslims in America to register, in a registry:

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach […] said in an interview that Trump’s policy advisers had […] discussed drafting a proposal for his consideration to reinstate a registry for immigrants from Muslim countries. […]

To implement Trump’s call for “extreme vetting” of some Muslim immigrants, Kobach said the immigration policy group could recommend the reinstatement of a national registry of immigrants and visitors who enter the United States on visas from countries where extremist organizations are active.

Kobach helped design the program, known as the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System, while serving in Republican President George W. Bush’s Department of Justice after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States by al Qaeda militants. […]

NSEERS was abandoned in 2011 after it was deemed redundant by the Department of Homeland Security and criticized by civil rights groups for unfairly targeting immigrants from Muslim-majority nations.

Oliver Willis points us toward an analysis from the ACLU’s Chris Rickerd, who called NSEERS “one of the most shameful chapters of American history,” said it came directly from the hysteria of 9/11, and that OH BY THE WAY, like so many Bush era policies, it didn’t do a damn bit of good:

The program never produced direct benefits in terms of bolstering national security, experts say, but it did expend vast quantities of government resources. “The opportunity cost of it was enormous,” said Rickerd. “These were countless hours of law enforcement time spent on people who had no individual reason to be on the authorities’ radar. This was an enormous loss of resources that could have been better deployed.”

The one thing it DID do was lead to a metric shitload of deportations, so maybe Trump’s team sees it as a success by that measure, and might want to use it in their efforts to cleanse America. What the fuck did you think Make America Great Again meant anyway? Jesus. (Please do click here to read all about NSEERS, by the way.)

Reuters reports that Kobach — a racist asshole who hates immigrants and hates it when brown people vote and also helped Arizona write its awful “Papers please!” law — is also trying to help the Trump boys figure out how to cram their Mexico wall down America’s throat without having to go to Congress, and also too wants to help fuck over the DREAMers, those 700,000 people who came here illegally not out of some sort of malice, but because their grown-up parents brought them here. He seems nice, doesn’t he?

Oh, but they’re just trying to keep America safe, right? And if you have to round up millions of people and deport them, or keep a national registry of Muslims, or send them to camps, that’s just the price of white freedom, yeah? Besides, you could really create a lot of infrastructure jobs if you hire a buncha crackers to build those camps, hoo boy!

Hey, 1938 Germany, whatcha doin’?

In August 1938, German authorities decreed that by January 1, 1939, Jewish men and women bearing first names of “non-Jewish” origin had to add “Israel” and “Sara,” respectively, to their given names. All Jews were obliged to carry identity cards that indicated their Jewish heritage, and, in the autumn of 1938, all Jewish passports were stamped with an identifying letter “J.”

In 1933, when Hitler took power, a Denaturalization Law was passed to revoke citizenship from Jewish immigrants. Remember when Trump threatened to bar even AMERICAN CITIZEN MUSLIMS LIVING ABROAD from re-entering the US and A?

We’re just saying, and we better keep Just Saying, because THIS SHIT IS NOT NORMAL. We sure do hope Trump and his band of merry men don’t have designs on becoming the Third Reich (even though Trump did used to keep a book of Hitler’s speeches by his bed, because he’s such a reader), but we reckon we’d like to keep paying attention and saying THIS IS NOT NORMAL whenever things are NOT NORMAL, lest we wake up one day and find that oh shit, America as we know it is dead and one day kids will be studying how nobody ever saw it coming, yadda yadda, etc.

READ A BOOK, A-HOLES.

On a related note, Frank Gaffney has apparently now been tapped to advise the Trump transition team on national security issues.

You may remember Frank Gaffney from such previous hits as “Grover Norquist is a secret agent of the Muslim Brotherhood”, and “Huma Abedin is a secret agent of the Muslim Brotherhood”, and “deputies of the Broward County Sheriff’s department are directly tied to Hamas”, and everyone’s old favorite “the logo of the US Missile Defense Agency is a coded message of the US’s submission to Islam”.

Yes… Donald Trump sure is surrounding himself with top people alright.

Further, does it mean I will have to place a gold star on the windshield before legally I can drive it? The problem is, NSEERS was probably constitutional, and it sure sounds like the people pushing Trump toward reviving it are savvy enough to toe that line and create a horrendously invasive program that reeks of religious targeting but which isn’t clearly on its face unconstitutional and which can be sufficiently justified to get a court to sign off on it.

Citizens, and probably even permanent residents, are safe. Because they get the full benefit of all of the constitution. So attempting to expand to cover them would fail. But I would bet this is what “extreme vetting” looks like, a revival of NSEERS “interrogation on entry” and “report your movements” requirements for a new list of countries that just coincidentally happen to be all the majority Muslim countries in the world. Plus maybe a few others that have pissed Trump off personally.

But even then, there’s no majority atheist/agnostic country that I know of, and even if it existed it would be just about impossible to tie it to serious safety threats.

So until the point when Trump dissolves the government and becomes Der Trumpenfuhrer I think we’re ok.

Don’t you watch the newsreels? Poland attacked us! And Jews were behind it!

    • Blacktop Cadence

Anyone ever notice how many wingnuts can’t handle the raw power of ellipses?

      • MJ

        Shush, Adolph.

        • Blacktop Cadence

Did your mom type that out for you when she brought you your Hot Pocket?

I ask because you forgot two or three periods.

          • MJ

            My mom did, Adolph.

          • Blacktop Cadence

Well, at least she can’t handle this English thing.

Don’t worry, sweetie, I’m sure you’ll find your career in janitorial services or fast food soon enough.

Maybe you’ll even get to touch a boob one day.

          • Jennifer R

I am sure the day his mother dies, the corpse will be pulled to the basement to replace his worn-out waifu.

          • MJ

            Maybe. But I’m still correct.

          • Jennifer R

When did you stop raping small children?

          • Lefty Frizzell

No – YOU’RE Adolph. And you smell.

        • Sister the Resister!

flagged for being dumb and also dog whistling

          • MJ

Then YOU tell me what the Jews did in Germany to be slaughtered like they were. (THiS
            I gotta hear).

          • Zippy W Pinhead

nobody here takes orders from you, child

          • Sister the Resister!

The Jews didn’t cause their own slaughter, asshole. Anti-Semitic Germans did that.

Great truths need being said twice.

        • mancityhombres

I’m still waiting for the first one.

    • gratuitous

Whoa, it makes even less sense the second time around. Maybe it sounded better in the original German?

      • MJ

        It makes sense both times.

        • gratuitous

Aww, nobody’s buyin’ what you’re sellin’? Poor baby. Call Ivanka.

          • Zippy W Pinhead

nobody gives a flying fuck about you or your dumb “ideas” except to point and laugh at the moron

    • “Muslims” did not commit any of those things, a few fucked up individuals did and condemning a whole group for the actions of a tiny, tiny fraction of that group is not really a thing smart people do… Unless you want to put all white people on a list ’cause that Hitler feller was white…

      • MJ

Sorry, but entire Muslim countries execute for homosexuality and a
dultery. Mainstream Muslims, not the “kooks.”

        • SuspectedDemocrat

You might want to look up who wrote Uganda’s “kill the gays” law, sparky.

          • MJ

ONE silly African country doesn’t count. We’re talking MODERN countries with technology, and they STILL kill for homosexuality. Sparky.

          • AnnieGetYerFun

No one here is defending the policies of asshole countries that do fucked up shit. And no one is defending Islamic law (even me, and I’m marginally Muslim, albeit more atheist and alcoholic and actually Muslim). Anyone who moves to this country is expected to follow the laws and respect our diversity of cultures. The incidents that you list are horrific, shameful, and perpetrated by monsters.

But they aren’t the product of Islam in a vacuum, and they aren’t the fault of everyday Muslims anymore than each school shooting is the fault of every white male who surfs the internet. Expecting my family to register (which I assume we will have to, since my husband is an immigrant who was born in Iran, even though he has no use for religion aside from the food at Eid festivals) is a bit extreme.

        • Blacktop Cadence

Yet it was Trump that put up Ken Blackwell to run his transition team.

How does he view homosexuals again?

          • MJ

Jews don’t shoot up magazine offices for drawing silly pics of Moses, either. So stop comparing and equating religions.

          • Blacktop Cadence

I didn’t mention Jews. I said Ken Blackwell.

          • MJ

Then why are you supporting this stupid article that equates Jews with Muslims and Hitler with Trump ? There’s no equation .

          • Blacktop Cadence
          • Blacktop Cadence
          • Bub the Mad Zombie

There absolutely is. Hitler wasn’t killing Jews yet in 1933 either, you fucking moron.

          • MJ

But what did the Jews do to make Hitler dictate them as the enemy ?? You can’t even name ONE bombing, I bet.

          • Bub the Mad Zombie

So as long as you can point to terrorist acts committed by members of a religious or ethnic group, you are justified in repressive measures against all members of that group? No matter how small the minority actually guilty of committing acts of terrorism?

I’m done with you, you ignorant prick.

        • Bub the Mad Zombie

And of course Donnie’s fundy supporters deplore such dreadful treatment of homosexuals!

          Oh wait…

          • MJ

What did the Jews do that equates to the Orlando Pulse massacre ?

          • Blacktop Cadence

He didn’t mention Jews. He’s likely referencing the fact that both American Muslims and Jews are more tolerant of LGBT folks than American protestants.

          • MJ

American Muslims tried to slaughter gays three times already, in mass numbers, in the U.S. Only Pulse worked. Yet you’re equating Jews in 1920s Germany to Muslims in the U.S. ??

          • Bub the Mad Zombie

We are saying that repression of entire racial or religious groups is wrong, no matter what the pretext. You apparently believe that Hitler’s measures against the Jews would have been justified had they been committing terrorist acts.

          • Blacktop Cadence

            I’m saying this, muttonhead:

            http://reason.com/blog/2016/06/13/in-america-muslims-are-more-likely-to-su

I’m also asking how you equate the mass of women and children we want to bring in compare to terrorists.

        • Logic of Color

Entire Christian countries do the same. See: Africa.

          • MJ

Nope. Africa’s dysfunctional anyway. But Qatar, Saudi Arabia…modern countries with skyscrapers, etc, execute women for adultery and homosexuality. AND put women on trial for witchcraft.

          • Logic of Color

Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria…all have skyscrapers and all have white evangelicals from the US promoting Anti-gay legislation that can lead to imprisonment or death. So, Nope. Oh, and they have Christian evangelical pastors that put women and even children on trial for Witchcraft.

        • Nigeria has the death penalty for homosexuality, and it is a majority Christian nation… Uganda’s “Kill the gays” bill was basically written by American Christians (they’re also majority Christian, BTW). So… I guess that’s not limited to Muslims either, huh?

    • Logic of Color

NSEERS failed. Miserably. Why do you think this time would be any better?

      • MJ

Sorry, Heinrich. Jews didn’t blow kids legs off at the Boston Marathon. So Hitler had no reason to go after them. Unless…you have a good reason..?

        • Logic of Color

Did you even read my statement? We already tried registering Muslims and it failed. Look up NSEERS.

          • MJ

You also basicaly supported the Charlie Hebdo massacre because of…”diversity” ?? Are you kidding me ??

          • Sister the Resister!

Asshole, no one supports the Charlie Hebdo massacre around here. Stop it. Just stop right now.

          • MJ

Yeah, you did. And what did the Jews do in 20’s Europe that equates to Charlie Hebdo ???

          • Sister the Resister!
          • MJ

Okay, then I’ll let you go back to your echo chamber. Keep spreading your anti-Semitic stuff (but I bet you’d STILL use the Salk vaccine).

          • Sister the Resister!

            speaking of echo chambers….

          • MJ

None of you can even SAY what you think the attacks committed by Jews in Germany consisted of.

          • Bub the Mad Zombie

So basically you are saying that if German Jews had committed acts of terrorism Hitler would have been justified in repressing them?

          • Slavakitty

Well, considering the DNA tests that reveal that Hitler had Jewish and African ancestry, by your reasoning I suppose all Jews share his guilt in the same way all Muslims share responsibility for the attacks committed by muslim extremists by virtue of their shared geneology? Is that it?

          • Bub the Mad Zombie

It isn’t anti-Semitism. It is pointing out that demonizing an entire group of people, the vast majority of whom are not guilty of anything, because of the actions of a minority of them is wrong and uncivilized. There have been acts of terrorism committed in the U.S. by white supremacists. Should all white people be similarly scrutinised as these proposals would scrutinise Muslims? If not, why not? There are fundamentalist Christian leaders in the U.S. who openly call for the criminalisation of homosexuality and abortion, as well as the murder of doctors who perform abortions. When should we begin rounding them up? There is more than enough injustice in the world without creating more, especially when the root of much of that injustice is fear, ignorance, hatred and paranoia, which will breed more of the terrorism that the repressive measures are supposed to prevent.

          • puredog

Ahem. I think you are feeding the troll, Bub.

          • Querolous

By MJ’s reasoning all AryanAmericans should have been rounded up and deported.IncludingEisenhower’s German ancestor came to America
            in 1741, 200 years earlier.

Among the U.S. generals in the ETO were

            Reinhart (65th Division)
            Dager (11th Armored Division)
            Schmidt (76th Division)

            Gerhardt (29th Division)
            Baade (35th Division)

Spaatz (8th AF, Strategic Air Forces in Europe)
            Vandenberg (12th AF)

The Canadian Army’s 5th Armored Division was
            commanded by a General Hoffmeister

          • Logic of Color

And, of course, Ben Dover. Also, too

        • Cheesus Crust _ Rebel

Peter Thiel – altho we LGBTQ people may have our own registry soon enough. Hmm, question – is there some sort of participation trophy for those who manage to get on ALL the registries? Asking for a friend.

          • Personally, I would not consider my life complete if I was not on all of the registries.

          • Are you on the no-fly list? Is that why you’re so insistent on rhe duck bus for the Maui Invasion (TM)?

      • BadKitty904

I call dibs on “Heywood U. Kuddulmee”!

  • AnnieGetYerFun

Of course, I’m sure there will also be a registry for Christians. Otherwise, Muslims are getting their very own registry, and that’s not fair and equitable. Every religion should get a registry!

    • Sister the Resister!

I want linens! and some of those cakes we like!

      • BadKitty904

        Towels – Egyptian cotton, please.

    • Iron Monkey

Make that 20,001. What a terrific idea. There is an office address but I thought that sending the “Thank you for your donation” postcard to his official residence at

      4750 N. Meridian Street,
      Indianapolis, IN 46208

      would be a nice choice.

      • dunno if we can do that, Iron Monkey, but I like your style XD

      • shaar dula

        this is genius idea

    • shaar dula

This idea is genius. Needs to be replicated.

If they make that registry. Everybody should register. Apart from all the Naeem Fauds, all the Night Foxs, Nigel Fergusons, Noam Fishers, Nestor Fernandos, , Namith Fadnavis, Ni Fus, Nim Fukayamas of America everyone registers.

  • chascates

I wish people who complain about too much ‘political correctness’ would just come out and say ‘I want to be a loudmouthed racist’ again.
And if you say ‘my friends know I’m not a racist’ you mean ‘I’m a racist just like all of my friends’.

    • Jennifer R

My response to them saying I can’t call them racist any more and I have to let them speak their mind is thus: “No donkey fucker, letting you dogwhistle WAS the political correctness, Calling you an apeshit racist is just the hard honest truth you say you want.”

      • Iron Monkey

Being insufficiently loud and resolute in calling you a racist was politically correct. Since it didn’t work, I will try something else.

    • beavertank

My favorite so far has been a Trump supporter, and big fan of the idea of cutting off absolutely all federal funding to sanctuary cities, who insisted she COULDN’T be racist because she was married to a Hispanic man.

…the conversation did not go up from there.

      • Melinda Piette

I’m sure the sanctuary cities will then keep their significant federal tax revenue there and enjoy retaining the other 50 cents of every dollar

        • Jennifer R

I am ok with us blue states helping to keep the red ones factually alive. It is how the system is supposed to work, help out the less fortunate. But fuck am I tired of it being spat back in my face.

          • I am ok with that too. Only, they keep telling us to stop being takers.
So maybe we ought to give them what they want for a year? See how it works out? Since they are gonna cut education, medicare, welfare et al anyway, this way the blue dollars are NOT going to fat cat pal projects as I suspect they will be.

          • Jennifer R

Well if deadbeat donnie got his wish and cut California off from federal money, what is stopping us from cutting the rest of the country off from our tax funds and instead spending them totally in state.

If he has a complete sobbing meltdown on camera, it might almost be worth it

  • DesertedPictures

When Hitler took over the country in 1933, the Nazi’s started a massive industrialization: they invested heavily in roads (the famous autobahn) and the creation of a massive a defense industry. And it worked great: by simply stopping to pay back their debts and borrowing money massively the economy florished. Everyone got jobs: partially because of a roaring economy, partially because certain groups where pushed out of the workforce. But the growth was not in any was sustainable: it was a big buble and the Nazi’s where aware it could burst. Luckily they had a great solution: War. Invade other countries and take their stuff. It made Germany into the first real consumer economy, and it stayed prosperous until the last days of the war.

Something to think about, now that Trump is planning a massive infrastructure (good idea) and wall building (bad idea) stimulus. Combined with his massive tax-cuts we are going to see a lot of economic progress in the next couple of years. But at some point this thing is going to come crashing down on all of us. And I’m kind of fascinated what the guy, that on multiple occasions told reporters that we should have taken the oil out of Iraq, is going to do then.

    • Jennifer R

Don’t forget he already has hired people adept at propaganda to help him fill staffing rolls.

    • Melinda Piette

This assumes he gets it through, of course. Also good to note:

      A) the economy isn’t, despite what they claim, in the shits (4.9% unemployment and his voters are actually in better shape than they claimed. Hitler rose to power during the height of the Depression and Germany had been suffering since the Treaty of Versailles

      B) Another way he made this happen was by paying everyone super shitty wages.

So not saying it’s not gonna, just saying it’s a bit different. Those whiny rustbelt crackers are really more pissed off that they can’t be overt racists/have non-stop endorsed white privilege than they really are “economically anxious”. And despite their opposition to minimum wage for OTHER people, they won’t be working for lower (it’s why their factories went to Right to Work (for less) states) wages or doing anything besides what they feel they’re entitled to do.

The infrastructure work is for messicans (who will all be deported)

      • At this point, I am thinking the Mexicans would be overjoyed to get paid by us to build that fucking wall and keep us on the other side.

        • DesertedPictures

Well obviously: they have to keep the White walkers out.

        • Melinda Piette

When Pacifica secedes, hopefully the mountains will be enough to keep them away from us evil west coast elites, but I think Centralia and some of Atlantica, might need some way of keeping them out. But maybe PussBurglar will have already built a wall to keep them all IN

      • DesertedPictures

Fair point. The one thing Trump doesn’t have, is a loyal party. I’m just affraid that things will actually look great in 2018 and that a whole new group of Trump supporters will (partially by challenging ‘disloyal’ congressmen in primaries) sweep into office.

        • starfanglednut

That is possible to a frightening extent. Everything I’ve read points toward a superficially flourishing economy under trump for about two years. Of course, he could start a trade war with China and create a global recession, so yay I guess.

      • laughingnome

I agree that the economically anxious are really just pissed off about a lot of things some of which are of their own making and they love it that the elites got their asses kicked because they have an inferiority complex. The economy doesn’t explain the election.

So vague, so many outs, so much “hey we’re just talking here!” obfuscation.

    Hintler strikes again.

  • Seccessiony-Katie

This is why it’s critical the media doesn’t get caught up in the “the transition team is in chaos” storyline. Throughout the campaign Trump successfully used small scandals to distract attention from more substantive things that warranted serious attention.

So while they seem to be running about clueless, things are moving forward. He’s working on how to register all Muslims; he’s narrowing his lists to people, and in some instances locking in people, who are abjectly terrifying; he’s ignoring allies and spending time on the phone with Putin, etc.

We can’t ever let the spectacle of how he’s doing it distract us from what he’s doing. I go back and forth on whether he’s crazy, or whether he’s crazy like a fox. Safest for everyone to assume the latter.

    • Foreign Agitator Ron

TRUTH. I flipped Chicago Public Radio on this morning (and my gawd do they suck). I lasted about 2 minutes. The host of that show The Takeaway was introing their topic- basically, how did the media get their narrative so wrong, i.e. (according to them) presenting Trump as a monster by constantly highlighting his words and actions.

NO, that’s not what they got wrong about their goddam narrative.
My housemate is not a wonker, but he is one of us, so he was pretty nonplussed when I started screaming at the radio “NO! NO. AND FUCK YOU” as I turned it off.

    • Rise Up, Demme!

a lot of us don’t have any faith in the media anymore.
Wonkers, give us your thoughts on how to highlight what he is actually doing.

  • Genocide has always started slowly. Usually with the constant dehumanization of the Other by media sources and politicians.

The yahoos out there now harassing and attacking Muslims since 11/9 are just a few steps ahead.

Before violence becomes acceptable, the state has to get everyone to see discrimination against them as normal, cast doubt on their patriotism and loyalty, and target them as the reason why things are going so wrong.

    • It’s so nice that the evangelicals here and the jihadists over there are working so hard and together on the goal of hastening Armageddon, ain’t it?

    • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

It’s still a really bad idea, cuz it’s introducing politics to what’s supposed to be a rubber-stamp committee. The law of unintended consequences should give everyone pause on this: do we really want to open up “fucking with the electors” to the political process? Especially since the Republicans are way richer, and WAY crazier?

      • Jgb979

Yeah I mean, it would only guarantee Hillary’s entire term being thought of as completely illegitimate, preventing her from even getting a SC nominee through the senate.

        • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

That’d just be the beginning. It would mean that we’ve narrowed the number of people who need to be bribed/intimidated to swing an election from tens of millions to 538. And like I said, the Republicans are both richer and crazier; who do you think would be better at that?

        • whitroth

You mean like both of Obama’s terms?

Look, the “unintended consequence” of a fascist regime is already staring us in the face. “Blowing up the Führer would be a bad precedent.”

        • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

And there’s ways to minimize the damage, but this ain’t it. We got beat. Trump is, and has a right to be, president. The rest is just denial/bargaining.

          • Villago Delenda Est

He lost the popular vote. He’s unqualified, and the last week shows that decisively. We’re setting an equally bad precedent by letting him have the White House.

          • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

I generally break this example out for the Law of Unintended Consequences: Political Edition: back in 2004, Massachusetts Dems were sure that John Kerry would beat Bush, but didn’t want his replacement to be a governor-appointee because Mittens was governor at the time. So they changed it to a popular vote for replacing Senators. Turns out, Kerry didn’t win, but the law change stayed on the books.

Fast forward to when Ted Kennedy died and the Dem filibuster-proof majority was on the line. As per the law, the replacement wasn’t chosen by the now-Dem governor but the people. Who chose Scott Walker, which fucked literally everything about Obama’s agenda forever after. Moral: Murphy’s law also applies to fucking with an existing system.

Making the electors a battleground would lead to a level of ratfucking that would leave the present-day version choking in its dust. We could have an election and then literally not know who won *for the next three months*, and also have the winner be someone who didn’t run at all or receive a single vote. Can we not open the Pandora’s box?

          • tomamitai

There’s also the fact that far right conservatives tend to be vindictive assholes. If this is done to Trump, they will try their damnedest to do it to the next Democrat who wins the White House. That’s not what at least some of the founders saw the electoral college as. It’s supposed to be a last gasp solution to the people choosing someone who is, for whatever reason, an existential threat to the country and its democracy.

And it seems like that’s just what Trump is.

If the electoral college was ever going to be anything but a rubber stamp, this would be the time for it. Especially given the popular vote totals.

        • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

Right, but we’d basically be acting against the setup that we’ve been running with for over a century. And in its absence?

At best, chaos. 538 suddenly-monstrously powerful and unaccountable electors able to make presidents without reference to the voters at all. At worst, we’d basically have supreme court-style ideological appointment battles for every. single. elector in the place. The Republicans have way more clout at the state level than we do, so we’d pretty much be writing off winning a presidential election for the next forseeable epoch.

It’s a bad idea guys. Let it go.

          • Cheesus Crust _ Rebel

Then we have to do away with the EC, because they are basically useless. We have to find another way to give rural America a voice, without giving them a, so to speak, nuclear weapon with which to blow up the nation.

          • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

No argument here. But let’s leave the Pandora’s box of screwing with the existing system unopened.

          • tenya

I would be moderately sure that if this were to happen (which I don’t think is going to happen because as much as the “never trump!!” Repubs howled, they still trotted over to the ballot box, or to the campaign trail, when the general rolled around) it would be a once and done. The furious anger that would result would pave the way for an amendment against it, which I’m sure the 3/4 states needed would be all red. Then we’d be back at the popular vote without the supposed safety valve of the college.

          • HazooToo

What if we just let the electoral college go? Just actually have each person’s vote actually count.

          • cynmac will never surrender

There has been a bill created for that. Nancy Pelosi just filed it.

          • It’ll never pass XD
Funny thing: I was reading a write up of few “polls” that asked voters if we should cancel out the EC and just run the pop vote and a majority of americans were all for it! Especially conservatives!
They….really do not pay attention to much XD
It made me giggle, I need to find that, was last Friday I think

          • HazooToo

I love her even more, now.

      • Cheesus Crust _ Rebel

Yeah, I don’t know – I struggle with this one, too. However, I do think that this is exactly the kind of thing the electoral college was designed for: someone so abhorrent, so unqualified, that we can’t allow him to become POTUS.

Really, the precedent that would be set would be:
        A. Large, really large, popular vote margin.
        B. Evidence of another nation interfering in our election process to the benefit of the EC winner (not the pop vote one).
        C. Unqualified, pompous, buffon who has financial entanglements (some known, some unknown) with foreign nations and more than a small authoritarian/facist streak.

I can’t think of a better precedent to be set for the EC.

Yeah, there would be violence and bloodshed, it would be very, very ugly… but I think we can deal with that, and I think we would survive that – I do not think we survive this. Not in any recognizable way.

        • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

We really don’t want to set this precedent, especially before Trump’s actually done anything. It’s a near-perfect carbon copy of the South’s argument for seceding, that we’re doing unconstitutional and illegal shit to preempt the other guy from doing it. It didn’t work out that way, though at least they did get to fulfill the violence and bloodshed part of your prediction.

Want to dismantle the EC? Go right ahead. But fucking with it because we didn’t like the result is not the way to go. Not even the other guys have stooped to that (yet).

          • Cheesus Crust _ Rebel

Here’s the problem, though… it’s too late after he’s done something. You don’t allow someone to take something from you, and then try to get it back – you do everything in your power to stop it being removed in the first place.

Maybe I view him as more of a mortal threat than most people do. This isn’t Mike Pence (whom I loathe) that was elected, it was Fuckface von Clownstick. I wouldn’t advocate that the EC “faithlessly” throw the election over Mike Pence. I might be tempted (because I really, really loathe the man), but I wouldn’t, precisely because I don’t want all the things you mentioned. But we aren’t dealing with “Generic Republican A” here, we are dealing with a person who has no moral code, no ethics, and, most importantly, no respect for the rule of law. Mike Pence, while I hate him, at least has that. Clownstick? Not so much.

Anyway, it’s all an exercise in theory because it’s not going to happen, and we are all well and truly fucked.

          • CripesAmighty

The H1b program is horrible and is abused on a regular basis by companies looking to screw Americans over. The use of an H1b visa should require the sponsor to pay an amount equal to the salary of the immigrant per year, or some other mechanism to make those workers appropriately expensive to prevent companies from using those workers to undercut fellow citizens.

I am a big fan on immigration and immigrants, the mother of my children was an H1b from Russia when get got married (she didnt need me for a ‘green card’ as she was already eligible). But the H1b program was created for the benefit of corporations to the detriment of citizens. More than 30% of our doctors are foreign nationals as are 50+% of our STEM workers. While I welcome the drive that immigrants bring to the tables, it bothers me that greater efforts arent made to increase the participation of underrepresented groups in the US to make up those shortfalls.

          Have a great day!

Register people but not firearms? That makes a load of sense.

Meanwhile, “…trying to help the Trump boys figure out how to cram its Mexico wall down America’s throat without having to go to Congress…”

Trump said he wanted to repeal President Obama’s Executive Orders. Telling that he doesn’t say why or which ones. He just knows he heard someplace that they were bad so he’s against them.

Anyone here a fan of Philip Kerr’s series of novels featuring the WWII-era detective Bernie Gunther? They are brilliant books and so relevant to what’s happening in our country today. The series starts in pre-war Berlin and makes it quite clear how the developing popularity of the Third Reich influenced life in Germany in ways the people who didn’t want Hitler failed to understand until it was too late. The first three novels are now in a paperback omnibus edition under the appropriate title Berlin Noir. The Evening Standard notes the series is “cast in the classical Chandler-Hammett mould” but they are also steeped in historical accuracy and delivered in entertaining thriller style.

Oh, I think I read a couple of those. Yeah, they were good. My memory sucks though, so I don’t remember much about them.

    • Captain HappyPants

Yeah, I read those. Excellent reads. Thanks for the reminder. I might re-read…

Oh, my fucking gawd, I have spent all day on FB, dealing with my friends who are acting like Chicken Little. Coming here for a little sanity.
OT – Dead Breitfart has declared New Balance, the only sneaker still being made in the US, as the Official Sneaker of the Alt-Right based on this:

New Balance’s VP of Public Affairs Matt LeBretton said on Wednesday that with Trump as president “things are going to move in the right direction.” He also said that the Obama administration had “turned a deaf ear” to New Balance.

Someone sucks at their job. The comments were specifically about the TPP, but were lost of course. Everyone else is setting their sneakers on fire and posting video online. New Balance is in freefall. Link is to the full story.

    • Welcome to post factual America! In this case, both sides really do it.

    • HazooToo

      Wait what?

      • People be burning their shoes, or conversely, now trying to buy them up, because the VP of public affairs said something, with his mouth, that seemed pro trump.
Short version: People are over-reacting like whoa over shoes.

        • cynmac will never surrender

The whole thing is Real Stupid. Who the fuck is over-reacting over tennis shoes? How does it matter?

          • Everything MATTERS.
Srsly. People need to learn what the adage “Pick your battles” means, and stick with it.

      • cynmac will never surrender

New Balance, sneakers. Alt-right endorsement. Everyone else burns their shoes. It’s a real thing.

    • Whollyholeyholy

I saw this stupid “burn the sneakers they support Trump” trend before they became “the hot alt right shoe” and declared it idiotic for the same reasons you are noticing. At this point everyone I know may be receiving New Balance merch for Christmas.

    • suziq

grrrrr, I like my New Balance shoes but I do not like Dead Breitbart. Oh well, not like I ever exercise anyway!

    • SayItWithWookies

I am shocked — I hadn’t heard of New Balance in a fucking decade. And now that I think of it, Old Imbalance would be a good name for an imperial stout.

If this “Muslim Registry” actually becomes a thing, this post-Lutheran agnostic just might register as a Muslim, just to fuck with them. Anyone else game?

    • cynmac will never surrender

Yep, I will alternate between wearing a plain red ball cap, to fuck with people. Or a head scarf with whatever pin or badge they make Muslin’s wear. I am already wearing buttons for BLM, Bernie and DSA.
Teabillies are so stupid, they’ll react to any of it without thinking. Like my daughter was going to school at GCSU (Georgia College and State University, famous for the Ben Roethlisberger rape case in 2010), in the deepest of Red State, Milledgeville, GA. We stopped at Waffle House and what was I wearing, my Obama Hope Not Fear t-shirt. And I sat right at the bar where everyone could see it. *crickets*.
I love being an Uppity Negress.

      • LadyLaz

        You are awesome.

    My dog has no nose!

  • mailman27

They better get their 34 states together and re-write the first amendment of the Constitution, because this kind of shit tramples all over the establishment and the expression parts of our religious freedom. It doesn’t seem to be getting any better, folks.

  • Incoming Ham

Beyond the scary wrongness of this there is no fucking sense or logic. It totally plays into his demo’s lazy ignorance – people who may not be stupid, they just don’t care enough to learn anything beyond their beliefs or feelings.

Just thinking about these dumbfucks sitting in a room trying to do a historic reinactment of 1933 Germany makes my blood boil.

“Muslim countries?” Does that include the entire globe where people of the Muslim faith live? Someone who was born in Syria but is a naturalized citizen of the UK?

Why bother with common sense and facts when you can feel good calling a group of people terrorists. Just round up the brown people with funny beards and hats and women who wear scarves and stick their names on a list. Better yet, ship them back to the middle east, even if that isn’t where they are from.

It’s similar to the whole “Mexican’s” crossing the border issue. Trump just hammered away on Mexicans when in reality in the last couple of years more non-Mexicans were detained crossing the border. But every yahoo Trump supporter I saw interviewed yammered on about Mexicans.

Again, why bother with the facts when calling a group of people rapists makes you feel good. Just round up the non-English speaking brown people without the funny hats or scarves and ship them to Mexico.

My guess is this whole registry thing will eventually be broad enough that it will be pretty easy to slide in more religions, ethnicities, races, LGBTQ..

    • The utterly ridiculous aspect about that is that they’ll (along with their excuse-making enablers) then whine about “the other side” (because this is just team sports now, don’t you know) playing “identity politics.” As if shit like this isn’t “serious” and just glib, pedantic quibbles over semantics. ARGH!

  • LadyLaz

Soon. Soon I will be screaming I told you so as all my goddamn predictions about trump turn out right… gah!!!

  • babyming

Russia dictated our election, everyone knows we’ll do nothing about it. Somehow there’s optimism that Muslim internment camps won’t really happen?

I read where American ex-pats at a bar in Mexico were cheering when Trump won (savour that irony). Mexico and other countries that are housing these bozos might consider the same since the US now has “extremist organizations that are active” aka as our new government.

    • hendenburg2

      You read Dear Prudence too?

      • The Librarian

Yes, I do! But I think I saw that on OZY.

There is widespread awareness that Russia hacked our election, that the FBI and NSA know, and that no one will do anything about it. This is a new world for all of us.

  • Oh come on! Like Hilary wasn’t planning to do the same thing (rolleyes.)
