so .... okay!
so …. okay!

Here is a funny story! Your editrix (me) used to teach political science at University of California Irvine. This particular course was on conspiracy theories, and I used lots of true examples of actual conspiracies that were true! In preparing a lecture on Reagan and Bush I promising the Iranians money and weapons if they would just be so kind as to hold onto Jimmy Carter’s hostages until after the election, I searched and searched the Internet for the source of a fact I remembered very clearly: that George Bush’s denial that he could have met with the Iranians in Paris because he had been at a conference that weekend was a bunk alibi; he hadn’t actually gone to the conference until the next day.

I finally found the source.

It was Alex Jones’s Infowars, and oh my God, I was so ashamed.

Which brings us to today. Just this morning, Alex Jones — a senior adviser to Republican nominee for President of the United States of the New World Order — said this on his radio show, as captured by MediaMatters and stolen by us. (You can still click through to see the video, and you should!)

ALEX JONES (HOST): I’m never a lesser of two evils person, but with Hillary, there’s not even the same universe. She is an abject, psychopathic, demon from Hell that as soon as she gets into power is going to try to destroy the planet.

So far, just a common metaphor, like Trump in his second debate saying Bernie Sanders had signed on with “the devil.” No big!

I’m sure of that, and people around her say she’s so dark now, and so evil, and so possessed that they are having nightmares, they’re freaking out. Folks let me just tell you something, and if media wants to go with this, that’s fine. There are dozens of videos and photos of Obama having flies land on him, indoors, at all times of year, and he’ll be next to a hundred people and no one has flies on them. Hillary, reportedly, I mean, I was told by people around her that they think she’s demon-possessed, okay? I’m just going to go ahead and say it, okay?

That is … less metaphorical!

They said that they’re scared. That’s why when I see her when kids are by her, I actually get scared myself, with a child — with that big rubber face and that — I mean this woman is dangerous, ladies and gentleman. I’m telling you, she is a demon. This is Biblical. She’s going to launch a nuclear war. The Russians are scared of her.

I don’t know, I kind of like that the Russians are scared of her?

Imagine how bad she smells, man?

Is it that old lady smell? I don’t care much for that mix of lavender and talc and rotting TB breath. Oh, it is not?

I’m told her and Obama, just stink, stink, stink, stink. You can’t wash that evil off, man. Told there’s a rotten smell around Hillary. I’m not kidding, people say, they say — folks, I’ve been told this by high up folks. They say listen, Obama and Hillary both smell like sulfur. I never said this because the media will go crazy with it, but I’ve talked to people that are in protective details, they’re scared of her. And they say listen, she’s a frickin’ demon and she stinks and so does Obama. I go, like what? Sulfur. They smell like Hell.

And there you have it, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are actual demons from Hell, which is why flies love Barack Obama and Hillary smells like really eggy farts.

It is just science, case closed.

Alex Jones breathlessly added, “Hillary has cooties and girl germs and her mom wore army boots!”

  • The Wanderer

To be sure, I’m certain that Alex Jones smells of BO, fromunda cheese and vomit.

    • Astraea

      People tell me that.

      • Dee Andee

        Well, yeah, but, high-up folks?

Also too, is fromunda cheese like butt cheese?

        • Arolpin

Similar, but butt cheese comes from your butt, and fromunda cheese comes FROM UNDA your ballz.

          • Dee Andee

            Eeeeeeeew! lol

Give the hard-working member of the Wonketariat an internet!

    • kindness

If viagra had a smell, Alex (and half the Fox crew) would smell like that.

      • Celtic_Gnome

An article about possible medical reasons for Trump’s sniffing did include erectile dysfunction medication.

Antipsychotic medications are another possibility, but I’m looking at that one with a wary eye.

  • Scooby

So, basically Alex Jones is saying she not nearly as bad as Obama.

  • bubbuhh

I want to know where i can get such a wonderful rubber face. Perhaps, I can clean the smell off of it.

  • Scooby

Hey, he stole the sulphur joke from Hugo Chavez!

    • Arolpin

Alex Jones is a COMMIE! (With much worse comedic timing/phrasing, because when Chavez said it, it was actually smart and pithy.)

  • IndigoSnap

Oh c’mon. The kiddos are clearly safe near her. Everyone knows that if she was eating the babbies she’d have the skin of a 24-year-old. #sciencefacts

    • MynameisBlarney

      You can’t argue with science.

      • goonemeritus

If that were true Cheney’s skin would ripple when you blew on it.

So flies are actually hell hounds that serve their masters by landing on their faces at inopportune times? Sure. I’ll buy it.

She’s gathering her dark energies and is nearly ready for the final ritual. The dark thaumaturgic forces are gathering around her to the degree that she’s in shade now even while standing in direct sunlight.

    Her eldritch overlords are pleased.

    The end is nigh!

    • Blank Ron, Avenger of Ponies

Good, cuz I have things to do once it’s over.

  • anon_the_great

Reb, thanks for reminding us Mr. Jones is an equal opportunity conspiracy theorist. It’s all about the $$$$$

  • Demons.

What can you rationally say to that? The guy believes that invisible boogeymen have inhabited the bodies of the President and the former Secretary of State.

    Demons…

There’s really a nihilistic part of my brain that hopes Trump wins so these crazy motherfuckers that love him can finally see what the Dark Ages was like before science made our lives much easier.

Hell, maybe science can whip up a dimensional gateway and we can kick them all over to the parallel universe where Trump wins instead of getting his ass kicked like he’s going to get it kicked.

    • Dee Andee

Once they whip out the demon thing again, you know they’re toast.

  • therblig

seems like kind of poor planning by prince of darkness to have to use the american electoral process in order to destroy the world.

          • The Wanderer

I actually borrowed the basic idea from James Blish’s A Case of Conscience.

    • Gayer Than Thou

Right? Like wouldn’t a demon from Hell who had the power to destroy the earth just, you know, do it? Without having to go through the primaries and then these terrible debates?

      • Blank Ron, Avenger of Ponies

Demons from Hell may wish to destroy the world, but they are great believers in the democratic process.

        • Gayer Than Thou

I’m trying to imagine a demon from hell on election night, losing unexpectedly, and by a wide margin. Bitter and disappointed, she has two bourbons straight. But after a while, she’s all “You know, fuck it. I tried. I’m going go lobby for the oil and gas industry for a while, buy a place in Maui, and just retire.”

OT – was listening to Thomas Frank on the BBC World Service and he was saying that NAFTA was what destroyed unions.

okay, dipshits. let’s clear this up: NAFTA did not screw the unions. it in no way took away their right to bargain collectively or diminish their power.

want to know what did? a bunch of GOPers passing “right to work” laws in the states. that is what happened to collective bargaining.

if you need more convincing that Democrats are, in fact, on the side of our workers, go back and relive the 2011 WI protests.

    • Vincent Ricola

This. There are actual reasons to despise Scott Walker that have nothing to do with his dopey face and everything to do with his corporate-sponsored crusade against collective bargaining.

I don’t know why suddenly everyone – right AND left – are now trying to pin it on NAFTA. There’s been a coordinated Republican effort to union bust on a state level for the past 2 decades and that’s why unions have seen a power drop.

Her Murder Machine must be malfunctioning since it was too busy killing a random low level DNC staffer to bother to take out all those women at Trump’s press conference, let alone a priority target like Alex Jones.

      • Spork

The planning is taking some time because Hillary is going to murder Jones soooooo hard! Then she is going after that Scott Baio guy. You just watch.

Either way, there goes representative government, right down the crapper.

  • IdRatherBeDancing

  • Michael Smith

Hey, conservatives are just trying to stay true to the vision of our founding fathers – that the Earth and political institutions are susceptible to the influence and control of apocalyptic demons from hell, and that it is the duty of Americans to make sure such supernatural beings never come to power.

  • Every time you run an Alex Jones story, the madness is palpable. And Trump is literally feeding this fire – nearly every word he said at the debate is straight from this deranged nonsense. (Not that Trump believes a word of it. He just doesn’t care.)

ETA: I have to add: “flies”? “sulphur”? Holy crap.

Representative government, democracy, all that jazz requires a certain level of comity and a willingness to compromise. Which would be entirely ruled out if your political opponents are not even human, but supernatural creatures of pure evil. Another clear indication that the Republican Party has been taken over by people who genuinely want to end this whole experiment. All that bleating about the Constitution? A smokescreen to veil their true intentions.

  • JMP

Huh, I thought Alex Jones was just a lunatic conspiracy nut, and not that he mixed religious craziness in with the rest of his insanity. Seriously, who the fuck in 2016 actually believes in the existence of literal demons?! That’s just fucking ridiculous.

    • DoILookAmused2u ?

He saw them on the TV documentary series Grimm.

Like he saw those things on the other TV documentary series, The X-files.

An old college roommate of mine used to listen to his radio show. We were driving back from a weekend trip somewhere, and it was his turn to play his podcasts (I got the trip out, so I had to put up with the return). Anyway, some guy called in to ask for a “mass prayer” to cure his son who was suffering from black mold toxicity. I would assume this is fairly regular.

      • JMP

And I thought it was bad that my freshman year roommate used to religiously watch Rush Limbaugh’s old TV show.

  • Spotts1701

So my congressman, Mark Amodei, finally popped up today to announce that he still supports Trump, that he found the comments offensive, that he will not do what other Republicans have done and “tear my party of choice apart”, and that he hopes Trump can be a better person.
The skeevy part was when he said Trump needs to speak to his daughters and convince them he’s a good person. And then he offered to give him their phone numbers.

Civil rights lawyer Gloria Allred said this week that women have begun contacting her with allegations that they were sexually harassed or abused by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

After news broke over the weekend that Trump had bragged about groping women on a leaked 2005 video, Allred confirmed to Gothamist on Monday that she had been “contacted by women who allege inappropriate contact by Mr. Trump.”

I sorta get it now. RPG’s are a mix of wargaming and storytelling. Ironically, it’s the ad lib story telling that spooked them the most. These people came from a generation who thought creativity was made by “artists” and “writers” who are not people you know, not something cooked up in a basement game room by a bunch of teenagers. They felt threatened. If we’d been sitting around the table re-enacting the battle of Waterloo, there would never have been any fuss.

      • Anna Elizabeth

My parents thought so. What’s funny is – they didn’t know Gamma World and Star Trek, the RPG were the same kind of thing. XD

One of my son’s friends mom thought D&D was satanic, but had no objection to him playing the SF versions. Substitute “aliens with fantastic weapons” for “gods and demons” and suddenly the game was no longer demonic. OTOH, the friend himself was quite intelligent – so take that, genetics.

It’s all about the modern city, and how to build communities instead of shopping center and inner cities…Wonderful writing. The first line says: And now the baby boomers get to build a public realm .

In an emergency call with members of the Republican National Committee, Chairman Reince Priebus declared that the party remained firmly behind Donald Trump, despite the tape of his lewd remarks about groping and making advances on married women. …

The Priebus call itself was brief, lasting only 14 minutes, as he said the party remained “ahead of budget” and dismissed talk of dumping Trump.

“No mechanism exists,” Priebus said, denying any meetings occurred to discuss the idea and noting that it was also “impractical.”

“We are in full coordination with the Trump campaign,” Priebus said. “We have a great relationship with them.”

Priebus ended the call without taking questions from the RNC membership.

Even if you convinced me of these plans set in motion, what can I DO ABOUT IT? Actually, it’s like racists – and they often overlap – they send signals, and if you respond in a certain way, you get more, and more.

luckily for me, wearing Pride jewelry is the strongest signal for conspiracy-types not to approach. Cos the Homogays are Hillz shock troops.

      • starkitty

There is an exception: when the alt-right is on the prowl for women or POC to recruit to front their garbage. Then they want a fringe looking person, the more fringe the better.
I think that’s why artists get entangled with these people. A common point of entry is economic justice.
        Follow the bouncing ball:
-Wealth is disproportionately owned by the few
-The wealthy use laws, and banks to screw everyone over.
-Bankers are screwing everyone over(notice the bait/switch from rich people to bankers? hear the dogwhistle?)

Whether or not the recruit will accept and internalise Bankers = Jews, they will act like a carrier for Jew hating propaganda. At least until(if) they snap out of it.

I hate the people who knowingly invent and spread conspiracy lies with the heat of a thousand suns.

        • Anna Elizabeth

Yes. I was raised around this crap. I guess when you’re raised in an Apocalyptic cult, then it’s easy to believe in these other things, it’s not much weirder, right?

But, I read a lot, and was really into war & military history. So, if the USA is allz good, and they fought the Nazis, and the Nazis hated Jews, then the Good Guys don’t hate Jews, and I wanted to be an American soldier and a Good Guy….and I really am glad that I went down that path, instead of following the rest.

If you don’t swallow the hate, it’s a rope ladder out, even if it takes time.

          • starkitty

Yeah, and if the hate is never there, they’ll never get “pay day” for all their trouble. Fact it kinda backfires. People tend to get really pissed when they’ve been scammed.

The limits of any integer other than zero divided by zero approaches infinity (positive or negative).

Really, only 0/0 is undefined and makes no sense. 1/0 is basically infinite, for example.

IRL, this happens approximately (but not really) in systems that approximate dividing by zero.

For example, one way of expressing Ohm’s Law is V/R = I where V is voltage drop across a load R (resistance) and I is the current in amperes.

As the resistance approaches zero, the current approaches infinity as the voltage potential between the two nodes of the circuit moves toward becoming a dead short.

At some point, the circuit or power source can catch on fire even :)

      Ima geek.

I also imagine that Alex Jones can’t smell anything above the BO and Axe body spray desperately trying to pass for fucking hygiene that waft off his followers. maybe Alex should just get it over with and build himself a tinfoil house with tinfoil furniture and he can paint his tinfoil teevee with his own feces for all I care because tinfoil has a great way of blocking cell phone signals. maybe we’ll just give him one of the new PlaySkool models with the recorded messages changed to his favorite people talking to him. we might even put all the pictures he finds pretty on it.

May I ask a question? If you bluster that, if you were President, you would jail your political opponent. You are willfully ignorant about how government works because you think a single Senator can initiate, dominate and effectuate tax legislation (revenue bills are initiated in the House, not the Senate) and the President has to sign it. So a single Senator is but once person in a process that includes two chambers of one branch go government and another branch to effectuate the tax bill. You spout gibberish about foreign policy. So how do you win a debate exactly in light of that?

Can someone ask Kellyanne Conway this please? Thank you for your support.

I didn’t know Alex Jones was in business back then. Don’t be ashamed. The Alt-Right spends tons of $$$$$$ and time main-streaming their propaganda. A friend of mine, otherwise well informed, told me about the “OMG Georgia Guidestones!!11!11 something, something sinister etc, etc”. He’d seen this on some channel claiming to be historical or scientific.

After sighing sympatheticly, I calmly explained he was being sucked into a conspiracy fraud and there was no need to get upset. But it pissed me off. I wish there was a way of shutting down ALex jones and similar propaganda merchants if we could prove they KNOW they are shovelling BS just to turn a buck.

Ugh, the stupidstition. Remember the evolution is from the pit of hell silliness uttered from a member of the house committee on science and technology?
      Just ugh!

  • Jukesgrrl

OT, kinda: I was just watching the Dodgers baseball game. An ad for Trump came on. It was directly addressed to middle-class taxpayers. The ad says, flat out, vote for me and I promise anyone make $60,000 a year or less: a 20% tax cut, paid maternity leave for working mothers, and an average $5,000 child care tax reduction. He also “promises” small business owners that their tax rate will be lowered from 35% to 15%, and he will eliminate the corporate alternative minimum tax.

Hell, I’d vote for him if I thought he could deliver that. Sad to say, there is not even a suggestion that the president is not the one who raises and lowers taxes like pushing an elevator button. He’s just making a deal: Vote for me and you WILL get this in return. Must sound good to someone who has no idea what presidents actually do. The message they will hear is “vote for me and this will be your reward.” The ad also says these policies will create jobs. Another magic trick. The bald-faced lies will never cease to amaze me.

    • Count Awesome

      Just like Trump U.

    • georgiaburning

I always vote against ANY politician says “vote for me and I will cut your taxes”, simply because he or she is a pandering liar.

    • Gosala

Your point about Congress, not the President, setting tax policy.

      And also, too:

A 20% tax cut is worth less than $200 dollars to me. What do I give up on exchange for it?

Paid maternity leave does nothing for me. And why just maternity? What not paternity also too, I mean if we really want to encourage men to be more family oriented like.

An average $5000 child care credit hides the fact that the bulk of the savings are skewed toward the upper income classes.

A tax cut for small businesses may be a good thing; I don’t know, but if want to see the details. Is it hiding something the way the child care credit does?

I don’t see why the AMT should be repealed. Updated, yes. Repealed, why?

      • Jukesgrrl

No paternity leave because Trump doesn’t believe in men touching babies. His idea of fatherhood is “write checks.”

    • YoBunnyBunny

He’s going to do that with what congress of GOP legislators??? As if they’d let that pinko-commie-soshulism bullshit pass. BITCH PLEASE!!!!!

  • Jenny, Manocidal Vagendiac

So my brother finally watched last night’s debates after I annoyed him all last night to TURN IT ON YOUR TV! His response was “WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!?! Why was Trump behind Hillary like a cucuy the whole time?”

Me: Right, he looked like Micheal Myers.

Brother: THAT’S IT! THAT’S WHAT IT WAS! Seriously though, that locker room talk is bullshit. There’s always one guy like that though, and you just look at him like ok bro. He’s usually full of shit anyway.

    http://data.whicdn.com/images/234934795/original.jpg

    • Gosala

So I have a confused. On the one hand I’m seeing a lot of #notallmen comments like your brother and atheletes saying #notmylockerroom.

On the other hand, I’ve heard, for years, from woman that the rapey, creepy, #wimmizisobjects is real.

I have no reason to doubt that everyone is telling the truth about their experience.

So, how can both be true??

      • Gentle Robot

is it gonna be hard for me to explain the line between smashing that pussy and grabbing her by it?

        • Gosala

          ??

          • Gentle Robot

Both of them are pretty goddamn repugnant things to bring up, but just “grabbing it” is, you know, illegal, immoral, worse. It’s about as smart as bringing up roofies or saying you’re gonna “get her drunk.”
I never got the whole”we’re dudes and we’re together, let’s talk about how hot she is.” I mean it’s gonna be a really short conversation. I sat through my share of those topics as a kid and never understood it. It’s not just degrading, it’s dull.

      • Jenny, Manocidal Vagendiac

I think because the men mostly believe it is some bullshit this guy is saying, but not actually doing. You know to impress other men.

In reality, the bullshitting bro is actually doing things. I mean for sure there are people trying to touch people. Just the other day there was a weirdo hanging out in the Austin library trying to corner young girls and touch them.

        http://kxan.com/2016/09/26/witnesses-help-save-girl-from-kidnapping-suspect-at-austin-library/

        • Yr. Gma

          Good way to put it.

          • HooverVilles

            Yes, second this.

        • Gosala

I have read your post several times over and I’m not sure I understand it.

Paragraph 2: yes…gross…it needs to stop.

Paragraph 1: Do you mean to suggest that it is actually common locker room talk, but we men don’t notice it because privilege lets us dismiss it as unreal, as mere braggidocio?

With what I’ve learned of privilege recently, that could be. Dismaying…but possible.

          • Jen B_VA

I think what she is saying is that yes, creepy rapey dudes are out there. Not the majority but they exist.
And they probably do say creepy stuff to other guys who just sort of eye them and move on instead of smacking that shit down. Because guys, you know, you don’t make a big thing about some other dude talking about conquesting, probably just making it up anyway.
If nothing else, maybe this whole sordid mess will have other guys start going “Dude, NOT cool.”
What I took from it anyway

      • YoBunnyBunny

The best explanation is probably that a very small single-digit percentage of men do the creepy rapey stuff. However, that very small percentage actually makes up the bulk of creepy rapey offenses because they are repeat offenders.

Example, I was telling a fellow gym buddy dude about another guy who was always hitting on me at the gym, and when he realized who it was I was talking about he was like “Yeah, that dude hits on every woman. He even tried to hit on my sister!”

      • Courser

Obviously, I can only speak to my personal experiences around guys. I’ve spent a LOT of time in male dominated jobs.

Do men talk shit about women? Of course they do. Right after college, I worked for a veterinarian with a small practice. When a dog was making noise or squirming around he’d say it was just like a woman. Misogynist? Absolutely. But threatening? Not at all. Same with plumbers. Sure, they’ll call a woman a bitch behind her back and acting like macho jerks but talk about abusing or sexually assaulting a woman. Oh, HELL no! For all their stupid boasts and offhand dismissal of many women, they DID respect women. They all had mothers and families they loved and they were generally pretty protective of women in general. If any of they guys mentioned wanting to hurt his wife or girlfriend in any way, even a slap, the rest of the guys would set him straight. It was a hard and fast rule: You do NOT put hands on a woman in anger. You just don’t. You walk away.

So yes, shitty men and predators are around, but the average un-enlightened men I have known may have been trogolodytes in some ways, but you either treat a woman ‘right’ or you walk away.

Was this side by side supposed to be…convincing or something? I mean hell, I don’t know, might be! But the side by side thing is weird.

      • Jenny, Manocidal Vagendiac

Maaaaybe the ears but not really anything else.

        • Jen B_VA

Not even those. They are both ears but, both lobes- Bill’s are attached, Danney’s are blobbed at the end- and outter shell-Bill has an angle at the top and the edge is more symetrical- are utterly differently, and the inner folds are almost backward from each other.
I am sure he is trying to look as Bill as he can be, but this pic really only goes “We look nothin alike except we are both dudes”
They do both have brow ridges though! Course Bill’s is more a classic Neander-like continuous shelf and Danney has a valley….but they both have em.

Having never been in close proximity to the man, I have nothing other than gut instinct to tell me that Trump slathers cologne on to the degree it’s like an early warning system/trail pheromone — so he’s not going to know how anyone smells — though somehow he’s self aware enough to know he needs to carry around a dispenser of Tic Tac. That’s probably not so much that he’s aware his insides reek of a decaying mass of rotting flesh but more because he thinks it’s “classy” to freshen your breath before you lunge at a lady with your tiny little butt hole lips all pursed up and making disturbing loud kissy motions.
Alex Jones, on the other hand, I would suspect smells like a distillery. All in all, it’s probably best that Bugs Bunny’s prediction of smell-o-vision replacing television has not come yet to pass.

    • Vagenda and Tiara

Believe it or not, I’ve been rubbed on by Trump. It wasn’t anyone’s choice, we were just in a very tight space at a party. I don’t remember him smelling, but I do remember his air of entitlement. He just looked like such a freaking jerk. His whole persona was all smirks and “aren’t I fabulous?” Meanwhile, nobody was paying him any attention. It definitely was not an A list party, which I suspect he does NOT get invited to in NYC. I suspect Ivanka probably is on the A-list, but daddy Trump is not. I guess I should be grateful that he didn’t grab my pussy.

Rachel Maddow just said that Hillary held her biggest rally ever in her campaign today — 13,000- 18,000 people in Ohio. This made me very happy to see how many people turned out to show her they have her back, after these past 24 depressing hours.

    • Jen B_VA

      Why depressing?

      • Apple Scruff

The debate (and pre-debate prep squad) made me very sad. It was just so gross and depressing to see the hatred and misogyny radiating off of Trump, those women, and his supporters.

        • guest1331now

My purposefully optimistic but fact-based take is that the OPENNESS of the nastiness is good. It is hard to address a problem that is mostly invisible.

And Trump stalking and pouting is probably less dangerous than, say, the reactions during the 50s and 60s to the civil rights movement, and in the 60s and 70s to Vietnam protests. The stuff we are seeing now is scary, and some of it dangerous, but so far it’s mild compared to lynchings, bombings of churches, national guard shooting students, etc.

And the more open it is, the more people will be revolted, and the more the slow progress of change toward justice will continue.

        • The DeplorableDemmeVagenda

I also felt incredibly sad for Hillary.
SO sad that she has had to deal with all this low, low, low hatred and viciousness.
I can’t help feeling that being a woman is a big part of this, and it makes me even sadder. *sigh*

But I also know that she is very strong, and that she’ll be a wonderful president.

          • Apple Scruff

Exactly how I felt. But I have to keep remembering she’s got balls of steel.

It made me want to work that much harder to get her elected, too.

          • House0fTheBlueLights

OVARIES of steel. Balls have done enough damage to this world.

          • Sakonyachen

Even Trump conceded she is strong. With only the caveat that he disagrees with her. In the terrifying event that she would lose, she will be okay.

Trump however, I’m still picturing him pointing and saying, “Look over there!”, to Whitehouse security as he tries to run inside.

          • kbbaldwin2

Well, sure – she is strong now, but will probably drop dead in a month or so because she is frail and needs help walking.

          He is a bovine?

  • guest1331now

Ok, this is pretty extreme, but I worked at a private school for 6 years from 05 to 12 (school years) where I was probably the ONLY person working there who voted for Obama. One of my favorite people there was the music and art teacher, who was also the choir director at a local Church of Christ. One of the sweetest, gentlest, and funnest (ok, most fun) people I have ever worked with, lovely kids, thoughtful — and totally convinced that Obama was a Muslim terrorist. Literally, a Muslim terrorist and part of a plot to destroy America. Probably still believes it.

So I am sad (ok, saddened) by Jones’s claims, but not surprised. These people can pass as normal but they are f*ckin crazy. Borowitz: ‘Studies Show That Fact-Resistant Strains of Humans Are a Danger to All Life on Earth’

    • Bub the Leftwing Zombie

The most frustrating thing about talking with people like that is that they are completely immune to fact based arguments. They have no critical thinking skills, no ability to weigh evidence or logically evaluate competing theories and come to a reasoned conclusion based on the facts. Trying to get them to actually think is an exercise in futility. They think “Occam’s Razor” is some fancy new shaving system. They have watched a movie or documentary about a controversial subject, or read a magazine article or a book, or seen something on the internet – it doesn’t matter what. They are now an authority on the subject, and their minds are made up. Ultimately, you cannot have a rational discussion with people whose worldview is fundamentally irrational.

      • guest1331now

Strangely enough, this batch of folks were all college educated, many with graduate degrees; one had been an engineer for NASA, a couple of others had been public school administrators, things like that. Their critical thinking is fine in some areas — just highly selective. Most of them were ‘young earth creationists’– able to deny that the earth is any more than 6,000 years and change in age and think that the science actually supports their views.

The closest I’ve come to an explanation is an analogy with people who think (say) Marie Osmond’s plastic surgery improved her looks. Say whaaat?

        • Bub the Leftwing Zombie

Religion creates (pardon the pun), an absolutely enormous blind spot for some people. Once you allow your faith to override your reason, all bets are off – you can believe anything

I’ve been posting this a lot lately, because it’s funny as hell, but also depressingly true.

          https://youtu.be/RWW2z-yAQpQ

          • guest1331now

Ok, this is way OT (or not), but years ago I was working in a level 4 juvenile psychiatric facility (lockdown residential); one of the clients, a severely abused and deeply disturbed kid of about 12 at the time, stuck his head in the classroom I was prepping and said ‘Bill Nye the science guy’ in a very, very creepy voice that sounded like it was electronically modified to sound ‘demonic’ — brr.

In other words, I’ve been around ‘possessed’ people, and Hillary and Barak just don’t fit the pattern.

          • HooverVilles

            ^^^^THIS^^^^

          • cat cafe

Yes, that’s exactly right. Once they start operating on a belief system that’s based in fantasy, choosing “faith” over actual reality or truth, then it can be extended into other fantasies. I still can’t believe this many Americans still believe in a sky fairy. It’s so backward.

        • HooverVilles

It’s the old belief/reason toggle switch in the brain. As soon as something that contradicts their existing beliefs, the resulting cognitive dissonance triggers this switch to immediately switch to belief.
Why this happens to people who are “trained” in critical thinking and examining evidence is a mystery to me.

          • Kavefish

            The reason is clear:

The belief system was installed before the reason system by way of religious indoctrination in early childhood.

          • HooverVilles

Yeah, and the indoctrination is usually very strong. Not many seem to be able to overcome this indoctrination.
            Sigh!

          • Miss Anthrope

You have to admit, they’ve really honed their child indoctrination skills over the centuries…having shaken off the shackles of belief in imaginary sky friends at an early age, it’s actually kind of creepy how the moral of a lot of Bible stories is “Questions make God angry…you wouldn’t like God when he’s angry”
A long, long time ago I asked in Sunday school what Lucifer did wrong to be sent to hell, and after a hard sideways look, the answer was ‘he decided he knew better than God”.
That’s one hell of a veiled threat for small children…they know full well the earlier you convince a kid not to question his beliefs, the harder it is to change their minds later.

          • HooverVilles

I am glad you are free of that now. Thanks for sharing

  • Spurning Beer

I hope there are no trolls reading this thread. Sources tell me that neuroscientists have identified the brain regions that mediate conspiratorial thinking, sub-psychotic denial of evidence, and irrational tribal fear of Ausländer. Gene splicing technology has been successfully used to modify these traits, and piggy-backed with an asymptomatic virus, which has been impregnated into a variety of snack foods and carbonated beverages. The inoculation period is several months. In January or February, therefore, we can expect attendance to drop off at fundamentalist churches, listenership of conservative talk-shows will plummet, and racism will become as rare as hoop skirts.

Seriously, don’t let any conservatives hear about this.

    • Kavefish

I understand they’ve also found a way to bond this supervirus onto metal. But not any kind of metal: only metal fashioned into the shape of guns and ammo. This variant is airborne and has been released via chemtrails and by this time next week should affect the entire continent.

NBC. Trump at a rally in Wilkes- Barre, PA on Moday after second debate.

    http://nbcnews.to/2e1JUXv

“Lock her up is right,” Trump said when he took the stage.
Crowds screamed and chanted obscenities at the press pen with Trump’s encouragement. He paused repeatedly to allow thousands of fans to turn around and directly confront reporters for long periods.
“That’s why we have to win this election,” he said. “We have to take it away from these dishonest characters.”
Trump alternated between assuring the room all was well in the campaign while directing their unbridled fury at anyone undermining his campaign, from the media to surveys.
“Even the polls are crooked,” he said. “Look, we’re in a rigged system folks.”

    • Berkeleybear94

Brandenburg v. Ohio, basically. In the wake of shit like Socialist witch hunts after WWI and the Red Scare after WWII we got a push back on the scope of the first Amendment that has argued that short of a direct solicitation of imminent violence you can pretty much say what you want, especially in a political context. So since he always speaks in vague terms and loose hypotheticals (like the “good old days” comments or how “he’d pay the legal fees” if someone defended him from a violent protester), it is really hard to say he’s committing a crime. This view is both why we permit flag burning and other acts of volatile but clearly politically expressive speech but also why it is almost impossible to fully stop the Westboro Baptist Church, the horrible views expressed on conservative radio, Breitbart and Faux News and now why Trump can push the envelope like this. If he crossed into saying “hey, beat up the next black guy you see” or even better “beat that reporter over there to a bloody pulp for me” is pretty much where a prosecution could happen.

Newsweek: Trump embraces Russian disinformation, why?

    http://www.newsweek.com/vladimir-putin-sidney-blumenthal-hillary-clinton-donald-trump-benghazi-sputnik-508635

This is not funny. It is terrifying. The Russians engage in a sloppy disinformation effort and, before the day is out, the Republican nominee for president is standing on a stage reciting the manufactured story as truth. How did this happen? Who in the Trump campaign was feeding him falsehoods straight from the Kremlin? (The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment).

    • KnaveOfSwords

      that’s horrifying and bizarre.

That “one world hemisphere”-ish thing she had in a speech will definitely be triggery for the truly fundamentalist. Remember that for some people, the leap from bad person to demon is completely reasonable, especially when a woman wants to lead the country, promote equality, and be in favor of “one world gov’t.”

  • whitroth

Um, pardon, but it was at least 10 years ago or more than the Russians declassified some of the KGB files, and they had an agent IN THE ROOM with Bush, Sr, before the election, offering the Iranians arms if they held the hostages until after the election.

Let’s not forget, also, that Bush, Sr.’s father had his company seized by the US government in ->1942<- for trading with the enemy – yes, money to the Nazis (go look it up). The whole damn Bush family have been traitors to the US for at least that long.

    No conspiracy, public records.
