In his continuing effort to convince voters that he is indeed a very holy and religious man who hates abortion and definitely cares one way or another about fetuses, Donald Trump has assembled a crack team of pro-life advisors, headed up by one Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the absurdly-named-since-she-was-never-said-anything-about-legal-abortion Susan B. Anthony List.
And boy is Dannenfelser ever a peach! She calls herself a "Pro-Life Feminist" -- and like so many others who take on that mantle, does not actually hold any feminist beliefs whatsoever, and does not appear to be particularly passionate about any issues outside of wanting to make abortion illegal. Like, completely illegal , no exceptions whatsoever. Not for rape, not for incest, and not for health of the mother. That last one is pretty big. It means that Dannenfelser don't care if your life is at risk, your health is at risk -- just so long as you're serving your god-given purpose as a baby incubator. That's what true feminism is, isn't it?
In fact, when the Susan B. Anthony List endorsed Mitt Romney in 2012, Dannenfelser said she was told by the campaign that Romney did not believe in any of these exceptions whatsoever, because otherwise he would not have secured her endorsement. We can assume the same is true for Donald Trump.
Right Wing Watch notes:
When the House passed a bill last year banning abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy with a narrow exception for rape and incest survivors , Dannenfelser said that the bill’s rape exception was “regrettable” and “intellectually dishonest,” saying that she’d like to see all abortions banned at “any stage” of pregnancy. In a press conference, Dannenfelser said that although her group supported the legislation, “ the rape exception is abominable .”
ABOMINABLE. Like a snowman! Like a really mean and evil snowman who is going to murder you and the cluster of cells congregating in your uterus!
Also, as a feminist, she thinks the amount of talking groups Planned Parenthood does about women's health is pretty gross, and that really -- they need to be talking more about men's health . What? Do they not care if men live or die? Would it not be better for equality if women would just shut up about their own shit once in a while and think about the mens?
Wait, I don't think my recap of her statement is quite as hilarious as the actual thing, so let's check that out:
“It just seems like a way to get to people is to talk about ‘women’s health, women’s health, women’s health.’ What about the females who are being aborted? What about those women and their health?”
[...]
I love men! What about men’s health? I mean, do we have anything to say about men’s health and the particular health problems that men have? Do we ever talk about the ‘men’s gap’ when we’re moving into an election? I mean, real women who truly love what womanhood really is have enough confidence to go ahead and also really love men and truly see that, yeah, really, equal rights. So this gender-based, grievance-oriented politics is something that I hope the Republican Party will not fall into.”
I don't know what Dannenfelser thinks "womanhood really is," but I feel confident in saying that whatever she means, it's probably not something I love all that much. In fact, I'm gonna guess it involves some shit I'd rather avoid. Like dying in childbirth.
Now, does gathering up a bunch of anti-choice nuts to advise him mean that Trump is sincere in his anti-abortion convictions? No, but that is only because I don't think he's sincere about anything. I genuinely don't think he gives a fuck if abortions are legal or not, but the operative part of that is the "or not." I do think that if he were President he would appoint SCOTUS judges that would make abortion illegal, simply because he thinks it's a good look. Besides, it's not like he's ever gonna need one himself, and anyone he's related to would have the money to travel in order to get one, so what should he care?
Would he ever be able to appoint enough Supreme Court justices to make Marjorie's dream of seeing thousands of 11-year-olds raped by their fathers suffer severe health complications due to giving birth? Who knows? But that doesn't seem like a thing we wanna test.
