Ex-Trumper Corey Lewandowski Revives Birther Nonsense, As If Week Weren't Stupid Enough Already
Confound these Trumpies! They drive me to drink!
In what we are hypothesizing may be part of a coordinated effort to set a Guinness Record for most insane political news week since Richard Nixon's Saturday Night Massacre in 1973, former Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, now inexplicably employed as a commentator on CNN, decided it was time to ask -- again -- whether Barack Obama was admitted to Harvard as a U.S. citizen or as a filthy foreigner, because after all, Obama started it by saying Donald Trump is unfit to be president. He is only asking a legitimate question!

On Tuesday's "CNN Tonight with Don Lemon," Lewandowski objected to the president's highly unseemly answer to a reporter's question in which he said Donald Trump was quite simply too stupid, ignorant, and hotheaded (we paraphrase) to hold the world's highest office. Not because the president isn't allowed to say that, but because he should only say it at political campaign events, you see. But if he's going to go trashing Donald Trump from the East Room of the White House, "that also means he becomes fair game for any retort that Donald Trump wants to put on him." What followed was an epic string of non sequiturs that largely encapsulated the tenor of the 2016 election.

Another panelist, Angela Rye, noted that Donald Trump has been baselessly attacking Barack Obama for years, noting,

He is the one who was the spokesperson for the birther movement, and was calling for transcripts for -- and saying the president was an affirmative action admittee of Harvard. So let's --

Obviously, that mention of birtherism meant that it was time to revisit the whole birther fiction, and let's be clear here: Lewandowski didn't start it! That other lady did! Don't you go blaming Corey Lewandowski for going where the conversation naturally demanded he had to go!

Lewandowski: Did he ever release his transcripts from Harvard?

Rye: By the way, tell me about those tax returns, while you're at it.

Lewandowski: Well you raised the issue, I'm just asking. You raised the issue, did he ever release his transcripts or his admission to Harvard University? You raised the issue, so just "yes," or "no." [...] Don't raise the issue if you don't want to address it.

Rye: Two words, tax returns. Tax returns.

Lewandowski: Harvard University transcripts. You raised the issue, did he ever release them?

Don Lemon: OK, let me ask you something. Let me ask you something -- What is the importance of Barack Obama's Harvard transcript?

Lewandowski: It's not, she brought the issue up.

Lemon: I'm asking you, how is -- hold on. How is it germane to the election, and the American people?

Lewandowski: Look, the only reason it's germane is because she brought the issue up, and said Donald Trump raised the issue of his Harvard transcripts. And I just simply said "have those transcripts ever been released?" And the question was "did he get in as a U.S. citizen, or was he brought into Harvard University as a citizen who wasn't from this country?"

Rye: Oh my God (laughter)

Totally not Corey Lewandowski's fault that he had to talk about that. But while we're at it, WHERE WAS BARACK OBAMA BORN? Why is it that after nearly eight years, we still know nothing about this man or who he is? We'll give Lewandowski this much credit: He refrained from repeatedly calling the president an "enigma," or even an "enigro."

Once Rye finally asked Lewandowski directly where he thought Obama was from, Lewandowski said, "He's from Hawaii." But he'd still really like to know whether Obama was admitted to Harvard as a foreigner. Which could have happened to some guy from Hawaii, totally!

We learned a lot from watching this video clip, which is mostly that even though MSNBC was something of a disappointment in its convention coverage, CNN still sucks balls.

[Media Matters / Gawker]

The dance of joy will come when it happens to Texas.
And that day is a lot closer than people realize.
Which is why I don't watch.
