South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley would just like America’s The Blacks to settle down and stop making such a big fuss over the occasional unfortunate shootings of black people by white cops, because if they protest such shootings, the cops will stop protecting them or something. In a speech at the National Press Club Wednesday, Haley slammed the Black Lives Matter movement and called for The Blacks to stop saying mean things about police, and instead, get along with white people like The Good Blacks did in South Carolina after a North Charleston cop shot Walter Scott in the back, and after the racist murders at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church.

You see, instead of black people protesting and saying that their lives matter, blacks in South Carolina were far more well-behaved, Haley explained:

“Black lives do matter, and they have been disgracefully jeopardized by the movement that has laid waste to Ferguson and Baltimore,” Haley said of the social justice group that has spread around the country in the last year. “Most of the people who now live in terror because local police are too intimidated to do their jobs are black.”

Not to excuse vandalism or anything, but we’d note that neither Ferguson nor Baltimore were “laid waste,” and that the violence in Baltimore was mostly limited to a single night, thanks to calm policing and crowd management, as well as engagement with community leaders. In contrast to the imagined hellscapes of Ferguson and Baltimore, Haley praised how nice everyone in South Carolina was in the wake of the killings there:

What we saw in the extraordinary reaction to Charleston was people of all races coming together […]

We didn’t have riots; we had vigils … We didn’t have violence; we had hugs.

You know what else you had? In North Charleston, you had an immediate arrest of a killer cop, not days or weeks of noncommunication and victim-blaming from officialdom. And in the case of Emanuel AME, you had a suspect in custody the day after the murders, and even then, even with his direct statements about wanting to start a race war, you had vast swaths of the conservasphere explaining that there was nothing especially racist about the killer’s motives.

As to the idea that there weren’t any Black Lives Matter demonstrations following the murder of Walter Scott, we’d just like to remind Gov. Haley that, yes, there were indeed demonstrations, and they included that phrase she thinks is an inevitable trigger for violence:

BLM north charleston

And yes, it’s quite easy to find the same slogan on signs carried by marchers following the murders at Mother Emanuel too. Why, it’s almost as if Nikki Haley were cherry-picking two incidents where violence broke out as a way to smear all protests against police violence. Surely she wouldn’t stoop to implying a false dichotomy, would she?

Yes, people did come together to call for healing following the murders at Mother Emanuel — but that doesn’t negate the fact that there was one hell of a wound.

She’s a bit too dusky to listen to. I only take counsel on racial issues from true-blue white Republicans like Bobby Jindal. Not to mention, she’s a broad, for chrissakes.

  • Callyson

    Yo, Nikki? Check this out:

The number of police officers shot and killed is down this year, and half killed are black

Often, people who are sympathetic to police will quote that 83 police have died in the line of duty in 2015. And that is true, but what they aren’t telling you is that 13 of those officers had heart attacks or that 19 died in car accidents or that three died because of 9/11-related illnesses.

A total of 26 police officers have been shot and killed in the line of duty this year. Each of those is tragic and a reflection of the violence in our country. This, though, is not some race-based dramatic uptick in police shooting deaths. Forty-seven officers were shot and killed in 2014 and we are on pace to have fewer than that this year. Comparatively, 662 people have been shot and killed by police in America as of September 1 and a total of 792 people have been killed by police altogether this year.

tl;dr: another day, another wingnut gets it wrong

It’s down? But according to some of my old High School classmates on Faceboook, there’s been a whole scourge off police officer killings this year, and it’s all the fault of Black Lives Matter and Nobama has proven he hates the police by not talking enought about them or something like that.

      • Zippy

yup, even though 2 of the 3 people wanted for the Fox Lake shooting are white, it’s all #BLM’s fault

Over 100 cops, 3 helicopters, 47 dogs, the local SWAT teams, Homeland Security, ATF, etc., etc., and they couldn’t find the guys in a 2 mile grid. It was crazy up here.

    • Spotts1701

And of the 26, how many were “murdered” and how many were just unlucky enough to get killed in a crossfire (such as the Carson City Sheriff’s Officer who responded to a domestic disturbance and got cut down trying to protect a deranged lunatic’s wife and kids)?

    • UnsaltedSinner

“The number of police officers shot and killed is down this year, and half killed are black”

That last item an interesting fact in itself. I assume black officers don’t make up half of the police force, so why are so many of the ones who are shot black?

  • Callyson

Haley, the state’s first female and first minority chief executive and a potential vice presidential contender in 2016, is seen by many GOP officials as a draw for minorities who have voted in wide margins for Democrats in the last presidential election. But critics said a lack of diversity in her administration and her somewhat narrow view of racism betrays the idea that she is the new face of the Republican Party.

But of course she is the new face…to use in a futile attempt to cover up the fact that the policies of the Republican Party are as backward as they’ve been for the past 30 years…

Note to Blacks – if you are murdered while you are in a church while praying, white folks will feel bad about that and come to your vigil. If you are just standing around a park playing with a toy gun, or standing on a sidewalk, or walking while wearing a hoodie, or carrying a toy gun in the Walmart well, you had it coming.

    • coozledad

Well, if you get murdered in a church, it’s because you were CHRISTIAN. I can’t tell you how many times i’ve heard that sentiment expressed in Roxboro, NC, by people who ought to know they are unmasking themselves as pure racist shite.

But like in SC, self awareness washed away entirely in a mere couple hundred years of cousinfucking.

She’s appropriating the damage of the Charleston shootings just like every white band ever ripped off jazz, blues, rock, etc. The dead are just stand ins for Nikki’s experience of the black experience that she would have been so much more graceful at had she not been born an honorary white. It hurt her heart, she says, hearing herself say “It hurt my heart”.

    Racist asshole.

Caste is a Hindu concept. Neither Buddhism nor Sikhism recognizes the caste system or incorporates it into the religion, although in practice, it does have an influence on some individual Buddhists and Sikhs.

          • jmk

No worries! It can get confusing…there’s a lot of common concepts between Dharmic religions and a lot of sharing and borrowing, so sometimes it’s hard to remember which is which!

          • H0mer0

yes, it was us….a way of smoothing away qualms about social inequality by blaming the poor and unfortunate for their lot in life while assuming the better off are that way because they worked their way into being born out of the right vagina.

          • jmk

That seems to be an unfortunately common belief among the better-off everywhere.

It never ceases to amaze me that people who perceive themselves at the top of any social hierarchy – whether that of class, wealth, race, or sex – generally don’t see it as being due to an accident of birth, but really seem to believe that they deserved their luck, and that those who were born in different circumstances must have done something wrong somehow to have earned their misfortune.

There’s an awful lot of people who were born on third base and think that means they hit a triple, to quote the much-missed Ann Richards.

  • gene108

I do wonder, if right-wingers are knowingly lying or just deliberately stupid. The problem with white on black crime is that white kill blacks with impunity.

That’s really the beginning and end of where all this should be going.

White cop kills an unarmed black guy for not walking on the side walk, white cop should go to jail for a long time, ’cause it is not a death penalty level crime to walk in the street instead of the side walk, if it is a crime at all.

Folks seem to be totally missing this point.

They keep talking about black on white crime, but the blacks who kill the white get caught and go to jail (with maybe the exception of O.J. Simpson).

Why people have such a hard time grasping this is beyond me.

If the white guys, who killed black guys got locked up for a few years, you wouldn’t have so much Black Lives Matter protests.

  • Come on, ya’ll, this is supposed to be about unity as Americans. Let’s stop bickering over who killed who, and who passes laws to keep who from voting, and who passed laws to keep who stuck in ghettos, and who enslaved who’s ancestors and think of the poor police who feel really horrible about your demands to please stop shooting you.

  • AngryBlakGuy

…I have lived in some pretty shitty neighborhoods and worked in some pretty shitty neighborhoods and I can tell you hands down the majority of black people live in more “terror” of the police than their neighbors. Why you might ask is that? Because despite what Bill O’Rielly and Sean Hannity say, rarely is anything “random”. Drug dealers have a tendency to kill other drug dealers, thieves have a tendency to rob other theives and assaults are usually results of something foreseeable to cause a beat down. All of this is based on the lack of trust in law enforcement to adequately and fairly perform their jobs. Unfortunately the mindset of many police officers isn’t “crime prevention” but instead “intimidation”. The fact that Poor black communities have more faith in self policing than actual policing should be embarrassment to the ESTABLISMENT and not the communities

    • chicken thief

Why would they not want their 15 yr old daughters tossed to the ground?!

      • AngryBlakGuy

…that is the essence of the problem. Police in black neighborhoods either don’t respond or when they do they show up like the 3rd battalion of Army Rangers. That isn’t how you build trust with the community! I have seen situations where 6 cop cars were dispatched to deal with a simple fist fight. They literally shut down 2 blocks and had about 8 teenagers facedown on the pavement even though they had nothing to do with altercation. Now after seeing that, how many people in that community are going to call the police for future issues?

        • Zippy

the good news is- in L.A. (of all places) LAPD is making some huge strides in reintroducing community policing and it’s paying dividends like crazy

        • ahughes798

I lived in “bad” neighborhoods in Chicago for a long time, because that’s all I could afford. I’m a white lady….and the stuff I’ve seen cops do to minority kids and/or the homeless just made me sick, and if you wandered close enough to get a badge # and name, you were told to “GTFO or you’re next, bitch.”

          • HeywoodJablomey

I’ve seen this shit too. Nobody wants to call the cops because if black people are involved, things are going to go tits up in a big hurry and it’s usually because the cops are belligerent, heavy handed, and too often have crappy situational assessment skills. They seemed to just wade in and start busting heads. Even kids hanging out, minding their own business would get grilled by patrol officers about who they were, where they lived and what they were doing. My white kids and friends would get, “Hey, how ya doing? Nice bike!”, that kind of thing. I even confronted officers a few times about the way they treated kids and always got the same response: shut the hell up and leave the policing to us.

          • ohpaleasegivemeabreak

Remember the group of kids standing on a street corner waiting for their school bus to pick them up who got rousted by the cops a couple of years back?

Or the poor man in Minneapolis just last week, that was sitting in a public place, waiting to pick his kids up from school? He wound up getting brutalized, tazed, and fucking arrested.

My (half blah) son once dated a girl in an upscale suburb. A cop ‘stopped’ him in front of her house (he was sitting in his car waiting for her). By the time they got through “license, registration, insurance card, and oh, btw, what you doing here?” two more squad cars arrived. 5 cops to police a gainfully employed twenty-something legally parked in front of gf’s house while she ran in for some damn thing or another.

After the keruffle up here in Baltimore (I’m not quite two miles from Mondawmin), I was not worried about rioters. I was more concerned about asshole cops blocking off streets so I couldn’t go about my business and get to my apartment. Baltimore cops are good for shutting down a one way street in residential neighborhoods over minor BS, without the slightest pretense of giving a damn if people can’t get to their homes. And it’s not like you can ask them nicely if they wouldn’t mind moving their idling and empty squad car that they’ve parked in front your house…

        • Lord-Nash

Remember, Sean and Bill are on the same network that promoted the idea of neighborhoods in Europe so Muslim that police were afraid to go there. I’d believe that the cops just don’t give a shit far before I’d believe they were afraid to go help.

And even if that shitfuffle weren’t stirred up by Fox, has there EVER been a department or even a single cop who said ‘We’re too scared to go into this neighborhood’? Fox just pulled that shit out of their ass.

She just wants Black people to see it from our point of view. You see Black people, it’s already very upsetting when one of us shoots you. I mean, you can’t imagine.

So when a bunch of you and your supporters get together and complain, well, that’s just rude. Why can’t you be like the nice Black people? After a shooting they forgive us and hug us and sing beautiful spirituals. Those Black people are just wonderful. You should all try to be more like them.

(Actually, all sarcasm aside, I’m reminded of a story Ms Morte tells about her mother-in-law from a previous marriage. Her mother-in-law was from Kentucky originally, before moving to PA. One day Ms Morte is walking through the streets of Pottstown with this lady and they walk past an average black guy.

The way she tells it, her mother-in-law shudders a bit, turns to her and says, “I’ll never get used to it. I miss the old days back home. Back then negro men had the good manners to walk out in the street when passing a lady. These days black people are just rude.” Obviously Ms Morte was shocked. Nikki’s statement sounds an awful lot like that to me.)

  • whitroth

Looking at the pic of her… is it just me, or does she look really, *REALLY* creepy?

    mark

    • No, she looks like most Republican female officeholders, who somehow always look like they’ve got a major case of constipation, and it’s about to end.

      • pursang833

I’d go with creepy and constipated. The base must love that look though because they always describe her as good looking.

    • in the name of the moon

That lil old lady better look out. Those are the carnivorous teeth of doom coupled with the psycho eyes of death. I’d run.

      “nikki”.

That’s the Anglicized version, it’s really “Nimrata”

        • proudgrampa

          Nimrod?

        • Vegan and Tiara

Is that the female version of Nimrod?

          • nmmagyar

It would be irresponsible not to speculate…

    • ਯੋਨੀ

No, don’t ask me how it’s pronounced.

    • H0mer0

I know how to say it in Sanskrit and Tamil, not how to spell it (of the few words this coconut Indian knows.)

  • SullivanSt

Well thank you, Nikki, for highlighting that in the one state in the nation where they appear to regularly indict cops who shoot unarmed black men, the trust that engenders in the system averts reactionary violence.

Clearly prosecutors in the other 49 states should take notice.

  • Bitter Scribe

A police lieutenant was shot in a suburb of Chicago the other day, and of course our local sack of shit conservative columnist blamed it on BlackLivesMatter. (No matter that of the three suspects, one was black and two were white.)

    • SullivanSt

Or that people running from a cop (I seem to recall his last radio dispatch was that he was pursuing the suspects on foot) probably are extremely unlikely in that moment thinking about BLM so much as “what’s my best route of escape”.

  • Helena Handbag

    Darling Nikki’s subtext: uppity.

  • Paperless Tiger

… the movement that has laid waste to Ferguson and Baltimore …

    Capitalism?

    • kaw143

According to the scholarly work of Drs. Waters & Divine, in Baltimore, “laid waste” doesn’t mean what she thinks it does.

    • Brendan_M

Nikki Haley is one of those people that thinks The Wire is about crime.

  • proudgrampa

“Surely she wouldn’t stoop to implying a false dichotomy, would she?”
Oh, hell. Of course she would!

  • lesterthegiantape

“We didn’t have riots; we had vigils … We didn’t have violence; we had hugs.” Isn’t that a verse from the musical ‘Annie’? The real one, not the Negro version.

  • Enfant Terrible

    Dear Nikki,

    1. #blacklivesmatter is a thing because blacks are far more at risk of being killed by police than any other group.
    2. When we say #blacklivesmatter, we are not denigrating any other lives.
    3. Just like when we say “save the whales” we are *not* saying “fuck all the other sea mammals”.

    Your friend,
    ET

    • HeywoodJablomey

Ramen. And stop with the “all lives matter”. Of course they they do, and if everyone actually behaved as though all lives mattered, we wouldn’t need the BLM movement.

      • mardam422

        Ding ding!!

      • Lord-Nash

        An upfist for ‘Ramen’.

    • Lord-Nash

I highly applaud you for #3, I’m using that from now on. I now declare you no longer need be ‘Terrible’.

    • Sam Smooth

Brilliant! May I will tweet this and give you credit. Well said!

    • imakemyowndecisions

Does Nikki realize that she is not white? She could be mistaken for being black if they have poor eye sight.

    • Denise Collins

I love your comment! I have to use it if you don’t mind!

  • malsperanza

“…such a big fuss over the occasional daily unfortunate shootings of black people by white cops”

    FIFY Nikki honey.

  • snarkylicious

My disdain for Nikki Haley is color blind. Except for red. I do see red right now.

    • Mintie

Then change the damn channel already! No one’s holding a gun to your head and making you listen to read that shit.

EDIT: whoops! Brain not grammaring properly yet today. . .

      • Sam Smooth

We all need to listen/read, Mintie. We need to get angry with this kind of ignorance coming from our elected leaders. It’s too late for shut up and turn the channel. Whites have already been doing that for too long. That doesn’t mean anyone supports killing police officers but the police cannot be excused for their blatant inequity when dealing with whites vs blacks and other people of color.

        • snarkylicious

Thank you, that’s what this is about.

      • snarkylicious

Who the fuck are you to tell me what to read, much less what to feel? Get over yourself.

        • Mintie

          Wow, joke much?

          • EmmettGrogan

            Wow, funny – not much.

          • Mintie

            Not every joke’s a side-splitter.

  • SadDemInTex

Sometimes this all feels so hopeless…but then I see how fucked Europe is and still racist and I hope Homo sapiens go extinct soon.

    • mardam422

We’re working hard on that. It won’t be long.

      • Sam Smooth

        Yep!

    • FukuiSanYesOta

Hey! I’m European and live in the US.I can fact-tell you that Europe is less fucked up that the US. Well, apart from Wales, that place is all kinds of messed up.

      • SadDemInTex

I’m not saying we don’t win the fucked up crown…I’m just saying Europe is seriously fucked up and I’m tired of its snooty nose in the air attitude. Just take the log out of your eye, Europe, before you point out ours.

Yeah, and Rice told her twice! When your man abuses you, don’t get lippy, just serenely and peacefully tell him in a loving way that you don’t like being knocked out in elevators and dragged through lobbies. You have a much better chance of him maybe stopping punching you someday if you are nice.

  • danthony930

Why do do those who think that they are white use the phrases “Good Blacks behave” or “You don’t sound or talk black?” I amazes me that someone is suppose to apologize for being shot by Police Officer. If this does not tell you that you that you voted for the wrong governor, then I do not know what does.
