Today’s a special birthday! Fifty years ago today, Medicare and Medicaid were signed into law by that notorious communist, Lyndon Johnson. As a special treat, here’s Ronald Reagan telling us in 1961 that Medicare would inevitably lead to a socialist takeover of America, and by golly, he was right! Here we are, 50 years later, living under the thumb of a communist dictatorship, as oppressed Americans demand the government keep its filthy hands off their Medicare. Have any of you Olds taken the time to tell your children about how nice America was in 1965, when men were still free?

Also worth a listen is this story from NPR Thursday on how Medicare advanced the Civil Rights movement, since segregated hospitals couldn’t receive a penny of Medicare funding.

The parallels are astonishing. Did you know that Obamacare has a secret clause that doesn’t allow doctors to hang Confederate flags in their offices? We read it on the internet somewhere.

Having a Confederate flag hanging in a doctor’s office would be helpful, actually. I’d know immediately that it was time to find a new doctor.

¡Jeb! says we’ve got to find a way to wind it down.

By which he means: convince the Youngs that Medicare won’t be there for them when they’re Olds, so they’ll be resentful about paying into the system that will never benefit them, and agree to get rid of it.

¡Jeb!‘s brother (“The Dumb One”) tried the same Luntzian methodology when he wanted to turn Soshecurity over to the stockbrokers, just before the crash of Ought-Eight.

These guys are brilliant, I tell you! Why wouldn’t we elect another one of them president? And we’ve hardly got any wars at all going right now. This denies Americans their fundamental right to Support The Troops™ but never be inconvenienced by actual military service.

    • Msgr_Moment

I’m calling dibs on pulling the plug on vegetable-Jeb!, should he ever be plugged into something.

No I think Michael Schiavo gets dibs to do that one for obvious reasons….you are a terrible, terrible person El Burro Bush.

        • SterWonk

For real. Any time Jeb Bush says anything about being in favor of smaller government, every reporter in earshot should ask him where his small-government dogma went when it came to Terri Schiavo.

My family has had to let several people go over the years; it’s hard enough to do even when you know it’s what they want, and it pegs the inhumanity-needle when some “well-meaning” (read: not well meaning, trying to score political points) asshole who has never met the person in question tries to interfere.

          • TheBidenator

The thing that still gets me the most isn’t that Jebberz stuck his big, Taco Bell (he likes to call himself Messican but the Bell is the best metaphor for him) head into the middle it’s what he did once Terri Schiavo was finally allowed to die: had his A/G try to dig up dirt and bring a criminal lawsuit against Michael Schiavo. Of course nothing came of it because there was no cause to even be manufactured but that sort of attempt at cold payback was the moment that the first thought that went through my head was, “this man can never be president” and hopefully the voters will feel the same.

          • Wombat

It’s simple: They are deserving of government help/Medicare because of hard work and being deserving and THEY PAID FOR ALL OF THAT, OK (they did not pay for all of that) and reasons. Anyone else is just a moocher. Duh.

          • Zippy

Interesting you should mention that. I’ve personally seen the effect of that- while my mom has been a lifelong republican (from back in the days of the Eisenhower republicans- I’m somewhat of an oldz and she is far more so) it wasn’t until she and her second husband started to binge on the Fox news poison that I started to see the unhinged anger side creep in. He was actually somewhat liberal before that and did a complete 180. She went from being old school GOP (actual conservatism vs mob rule reactionary populism) to buying into all the xenophobia and other BS that Murdock specializes in. Since he passed away a couple years ago, she’s been far less inclined to have that trash on the TeeVee in the background and the reversal of the ugliest aspects of that mindset have been dramatic. She’ll always hate Hillz and Bamz, but she’s become far less obsessed with the usual nonsense that the teatards go on about and far less political in general. It’s almost as if they had been brainwashed…

Ah, Reagan- back to the old days where claiming senility got one out of taking responsibility for terrible corruption and impeachable offenses that occurred when one was obviously lucid. If only Clinton claimed he didn’t remember the beej instead of denying it all would have been forgiven, right?

Also speaking of Reagan not-so-clever douchemondo extraordinaire Grover Norquist is the one trying to rename everything after Bonzo the brainless which is really just about substituting bullshit for facts RE: giant tax cuts for the rich and how well they work. If the Reagan era was grand and Reagan cut taxes and deficits paid for themselves, clearly if we got rid of taxes it would be everyone’s birthday, everyday!

Actually “Zombie Reagan” is the new hot property coming to the SyFy Channel this summer in an effort to match the success of “Sharknado”. It goes like this …

It’s the 2016 Republican Convention and the delegates are excited to to crown their new candidate, Donald Trump. Suddenly there’s an explosion that releases a strange green gas from the cracked floor of the convention. The horror continues as, from the abyss, emerges Zombie Reagan, Zombie Goldwater, Zombie Jesse Helms and Zombie Dick Cheney (yes, it’s true, he has only appeared to be alive thanks to the use of a sophisticated computer program).

They have come back to repeal Obamacare, force Medicare vouchers, privatize Social Security and, of course, eat brains. But, *** SPOILER ALERT ***, their plan is foiled and humanity is saved when the zombies learn that in the modern Republican party, brains, if they exist at all, are merely an aperitif and never an entree. They quickly waste away to nothing and are easily dispatched by a socialist rescue party led by Bernie Sanders.

There’s going to be lots of cameos and I’m told that Bill O’Reilly might get eaten by Zombie Reagan. So that should be fun.

    • Jill122

I’d watch it. I don’t have cable, and I’d get it for programming like that.

But will the zombies be real? I’m very scared of zombies but if they’re going to eat Bonehead and McConnell I will overcome my fear and disgust just to make sure.

Facts are so important. I’d have to be sure everything is True Reality Teevee.

Medicare saved my life. And that is not hyperbole – because kidney failure is covered, I became eligible. Which was a godsend when I was out of school, out of work, and too old to stay on my parent’s insurance. Without it, I’d be dead and my parents would have gone bankrupt trying to save me.
The only quibble I ever had was the “36-month rule” – if you stayed on dialysis Medicare would cover you until the day you died. But as soon as you got your new organ, after three years they wouldn’t cover the medication you needed to take for the rest of your life. I never found out if that was ever fixed.

    • Biel_ze_Bubba

The Congressdicks in Congress never did fix it – even though it would have saved money in the long run – because “spending”. Patients without $5k a month in spare change for the drugs would lose the kidney (that Medicare had paid $80k for) and go back on dialysis. And then Medicare would resume paying for the dialysis, which costs more than the drugs that they wouldn’t fucking pay for! The GOP must have calculated that it was cheaper to let patients die after 5 years of dialysis, rather than have them live for decades with the transplant.

Insurance through the ACA has finally fixed that bit of insanity. (Thanks, Obama!)

it may sound simpleton and alex-jones level paranoid, but nearly every modern problem we have in this country can be traced back to him and him alone:
    demonizing gubmint
    demonizing the needy/poor
    trickle down
bloating military budget to absurd levels at he expense of all else
deregulation [especially allowing CEOs to paid in stock – that alone – that one move – has destroyed business in this country more than anything else and brought on today’s inequality]
demonizing/destroying unions [and it here that we remind the frothing loons who worship his very bodily secretions that he was once… the head of A UNION]
and one of his biggest dick moves was yanking the solar panels off the white house like the petulant child he was.
he would be laughed out of the GOP today as a bleeding heart sellout.

Reagan was an arrogant shmuck, an operator, a goofball with a bunch of wisecracks, and he never met a 1% he wouldn’t fellate. And he was also a dunce that referred to his wife as “Mommy”. Sound familiar? He was that era’s Trump minus the inherited wealth and the sketchy business practices. The dingbats went for him in droves, just as now. Don’t underestimate anyone who resonates with the halfwits.
