Duggar family values.

It’s okay to feel sorry for Josh Duggar — we as liberals know teenage boys’ brains haven’t finished developing yet, which is why we don’t like sending them to the electric chair. Liberals also know we are molded by our circumstances: He was so young (assuming — assuming — his sexcrime spree has ended). Plus, he’s got those parents, and all that sexual dysfunction, and the bizarre patriarchal bullshit, and the constant lessons that Eve (even in the form of his preteen sisters, apparently) is there to tempt him from righteousness, I mean my god. We also know that nobody is all good or all bad, except Dick Cheney.

But Josh Duggar’s “mistake” (molesting five girls, including four of his sisters) went on for a year … after his sisters told their father, Jim Bob Duggar, that Josh had been groping on their dirty pillows and their sin holes (THEIR VAGINAS) while they slept. A year. A year after they’d made it known that no, actually, they did not consent to any childish sexual experimenting, considering they went to their dad for help. So that seems less like “dumb fucked-up repressed kid” and more like “predator.” I’d suggest he should have tried masturbating instead, but considering the values of his gross, terrible family, that’s probably an equal “sin.”

We aren’t going to go into the Duggar family’s vicious, fork-tongued hypocrisy regarding gay people or trans people — we’ve covered that already. We’re not going to go into Josh’s disgusting work for the hate group Family Research Council. We’re not going to go after Mike Huckabee for weeping his fat salty tears for Josh Duggar and the “good” Duggar family, while hissing that the Obamas are unfit because they let their daughters listen to Beyonce, the Nubian Whore — we’ve already done that too. (We will take the time to link to @teachersabrina, though: “#Privilege is receiving the presumption of innocence, even after you’ve admitted you’re guilty.”)

What we are going to talk about is what the Duggars’ religion — their freaky-deaky, Stepford-meets-Taliban, patriarchal, Quiverfull, homeschooled, isolated, culty, HARMFUL AND DAMAGING religion — teaches them about their girl babies. Because what it teaches is Some Bullshit, and it is Not Okay.

What we have below are teachings on “moral failures in a family” as captured for posterity by RecoveringGrace, which tracks abuse in the homeschooling fundamentalist community. Today’s lesson comes from Bill Gothard — who coincidentally has been accused of sexual abuse and harassment by more than 30 teenage girls, but don’t worry, the institute he founded cleared him of all charges. Gothard is the big sexy brain behind the “Advanced Training Institute,” which just happens to be the moral authority on how to homeschool your children that the Duggars follow. Do note that despite the similarities, the young man molesting his sisters in this “moral” lesson is not Josh Duggar, whose admitted crimes against his sisters and one of their friends occurred throughout 2002, while this worksheet has been around since the ’90s.

We already know (because Mama Duggar, Michelle, admitted it to the police) that in actuality Josh never had any counseling to help with his compulsions; instead he was sent away for a whole summer to live with some dude while doing home remodeling. What we don’t know is whether the girls were given any counseling; statements from Josh, his wife, Anna, and his parents don’t really focus on the girls, you know? In fact, the girls he molested aren’t actually mentioned at all! (The real victim, of course, is Josh.) HOWEVER! If the girls did get any kind of therapy (facts not in evidence), it’s a solid bet that the below was all the help they got on how to heal.

counseling sexual abuse

Let’s skip one through three and zoom in on number four: “Why Did God Let It Happen?” We have some options: Immodest dress! Indecent exposure! Being out from protection of our parents! EVIL FRIENDS! Oh wait, sorry, that was a question mark: evil friends?

Yes. Your evil friends caused your brother to molest you. Now that we know that Josh Duggar’s sisters were probably but not necessarily responsible for their own molestation, let’s see if there could possibly be times when they weren’t to blame:

Screen Shot 2015-05-23 at 3.31.23 PM

“If abused was not at fault.” HALLELUJAH it is possible you did not molest yourselves, Duggar girl babies! Praise the lord and pass the holy bathing suit!

RecoveringGrace has ever so much more, and all of it is terrible. A boy (who, again, was not Josh Duggar) molested his sisters, and Gothard’s takeaway was that boys should not change their sisters’ diapers and that his toddler sisters caused their own molestation by wearing towels out of the bath. The boy concurs: if the girls had been modest, and his parents hadn’t made him babysit, he probably would not have abused his sisters sexually. Also to blame are porn and (atypically!) a lack of sex ed from his parents. Also ALSO to blame are laziness and back-talk and teenage sulks — so, parents, your teen is doubtless sexually assaulting the whole neighborhood RIGHT NOW. Sorry :(

Do avail yourself of the opportunity to read the whole thing. These are the people being held up as moral exemplars by half our nation.

Women — girls, toddlers, diapered babies, whatever — have swept him from the path of righteousness. What could a boy do but avail himself of their lithe preteen bodies? And his sister didn’t even cry out to God to save her? Whatever, slut.

Older lessons from Gothard and his Advanced Training Institute explain quite readily that a girl is almost always to blame for her own rape; in one Old Testament case, Dinah does not listen to her father, Jacob, and gets raped. In another, Tamar does listen to her father, King David, and gets raped. Fucked if you do and fucked if you don’t, probably should have done whatever third thing is the opposite of both those other two things, and also, I think I might have seen your ankle, please come get your raping.

But what if you’re not a girl being raped or sexually assaulted by a member of your family — a member of your family who, if he’s your dad, is also GOD’S REPRESENTATIVE ON EARTH — but are instead a grown woman married to a man (who therefore is GOD’S REPRESENTATIVE ON EARTH) and he is beating the shit out of you? What should you do, grown lady?

Oh, “there is no victim if we understand we are called to suffer for righteousness”?

In conclusion, I am sorry, Duggar girls, that you have been reared in a fundamentalist culture that considers you to blame for a man’s actions; that he is the victim and you must affirm your love for him like so …

Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many. 7 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. 8 Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.

… and he is your brother, and maybe you DO love and forgive him (you’re allowed!) but you also have been coerced into loving and forgiving him because your cult would have thrown you into the terrifying World where rapes are around every corner, but those are non-family rapes, so they are scary; and you are not allowed to go to college, or anywhere else, because you will become damaged goods (immodest and impure) and only your brother is allowed to do that to you; and everything is terrible. I am sorry, Duggar girls. Also, that your parents and brother are such pieces of shit.

so many commenters said this- about Josh making a “mistake” and his parents got him and his sisters help and also Jesus. We are all just bad people for calling him a predator and sex offender and we are just doing it to persecute a Christian family. This is what pisses me off so much. It’s the GIRLS responsibility to control and patrol the males around her. The little girls block the tv or tell the boys to look at their shoes if a pretty girl walks by. So in essence, it is THEIR fault for being molested by their brother because female. Fuck these assholes. Run away Jinger and Jana!

    • Mehmeisterjr

The practical problem is where do they run to? The whole damn state is dysfunctional except to the extent that its politicians, police and court system works as a pedophile conspiracy. I honestly fear for these childrens’ lives.

    • GreenEyedLilo

They have no real education, an ex-governor supports their parents and brother, a judge he appointed has ordered the police record destroyed, many Americans will recognize them….it’s not impossible, but it sure is going to be tricky. And of course, they’ve been taught to fear and literally demonize most people who can and will provide real help.

    • malsperanza

There’s a good, scientific precedent for this, of course. Freud developed his highly influential concept of child sexuality after listening to a number of his traumatized adult women patients describe having been molested as children. Since it was simply not possible that abuse of little girls by adult men was common (or even happened at all), the obvious explanation was that little girls were fantasizing about adult men. Or adult women were fantasizing about being little girls fantasizing about adult men; yeah that was it. And the little girls flirted and flaunted their sexuality many years before puberty, because that’s how little girls do.

Of course, the Freudians have long since repudiated are going to repudiate this theory any day now.

So yeah, fuck these fundies, but alsotoo, fuck Freud, and male privilege in general.

      • Biel_ze_Bubba

I took an intro Psych course (the prototypical “Psychology 101”) back in the day, and they trotted out some poor Freudian for a couple of lectures. He did not fare well; the hard-core science & engineering audience (it’s a notoriously evidence-based institution) hammered him mercilessly.

    • Lady Bug

Absolutely. I take it you also saw the infamous “Nike” episode of 19 Kids & Counting?

I’d love to see all of the kids, the boys included, leave behind the patriarchal cult they were raised in. Not going to happen, so yeah FreeJinger indeed.

    • Wee Mousie

If the Fundies want to make molestation and rape the woman’s fault, then they should send the girls out at three-years-old to begin learning martial arts, while the boys stay home and take up knitting.

      • Jenny

You’d think. Pero no! Girls responsible and yet somehow still forced to be answerable to a dude.

Big fucking deal! I know lots more than twenty people who all come from the same place — Buffalo!

  • I kind of had to stop reading around the “Don’t let your toddlers get all slutty around the house” part…

    • H0mer0

I used to think my parents were prudes when they made me wear underwear when I was bathing with my brothers and now maybe in hindsight they did the right thing so that my chubby brown body wouldn’t have tempted them to stray from the path of righteousness and make them all rapey (although one of them still seems to have terrible masturbation guilt–I think his Christian friends must have done that to him.)

    • Who among us hasn’t been turned on by the sight of hot, naked toddler? Amiright? Am I? Oh, God….

      • Wee Mousie

Funny, but a toddler, has never tempted me, but then, I may have the wrong attitude toward toddlers.. My definition of a toddler is an alimentary canal with a loud voice at one end and no responsibility at the other.

      • TheBidenator

Pfft don’t they know as the babby makin’ machine mom is supposed to never leave the house? Also, the argument that naturalism leads to molestation is just as bad. Here’s the thing, I have two siblings and my older brother is 3 years older than I am and my sister is one year older as well. When we were really little we took baths together pretty often and we also ran around minus attire…none of us are molesters.

The whole reason for that line of bullshit I’m sure had to do with insulting “hippy” parents for daring to want their children to view their bodies as normal and not sinful simply for existing. Now back to the snark.

  • Portia Elm

    No. 7 Example: Daniel
    Extreme abuse (Eunuch)
First of all, Daniel was NOT said to be a eunuch IN THE BIBLE.

These “Patriarchs’ ” notion of “extreme abuse” of course is of a male being castrated. And eunuchs were castrated so that they could not “molest” the women of the court (family). Ergo, extreme abuse, in their minds, is not being able to molest the women in your family. It just gets worse and worse and worse and worse….

The whole thing is disgusting, but to me the most disturbing is what he did to Joy at the age of 4 and 5. She was just a baby, she didn’t have boobs yet, neither did any of the girls for that matter. Jill might have been just developing. Why didn’t he go after Jana? Was he afraid she’d talk or did he not like women, just little girls? If that is the case his 5 year old daughter needs to be removed from that home because odds are he’s doing it too her.

They are talking about just removing Josh from the show and keeping it on. As much as I love/hate/hate/love to watch this stupid show, I will never again, knowing that his parents did NOTHING when they found out big brother was finger fucking his 4 year old sister. I hope somebody made lots of copies of the criminal investigation before officially destroying the records. What an outrage! There’s a judge who needs to be removed from the bench.

    • Jeannie

The article says the record was only expunged – so it still exists:

      http://criminal.findlaw.com/expungement/expungement-basics.html

To FBI, other gov’t agencies, NSA of course…

      • Steverino247

Not so fast. After a certain amount of time (like seven years) those go away as well. Now, if there’s a problem the Feds are investigating, it stays longer, but usually, even the Feds get bored and forget…

  • shastakoala

Sadly the older girls are marrying into the same kind of life they are escaping. Papa Duggar pretty much handpicked the husbands.

    • JohnR

They were probably betrothed at the age of 12 or even younger.

    • Mehmeisterjr

You can imagine the courtship as Pa Duggar vets the would-be beaux. That one? Not creepy enough. That one? Nah. This one? Skeevy? Check. Fundamentalist? Check. (They exchange knowing looks.) Yeah, that’s the lad that will father a quiverful of new victims.

    • Jenny

I want to feel bad for Michelle Duggar because I came across a Jim Bob Duggar type once, and according to everyone else I had found a “good man.” But she never saw through the abusive controlling grooming shit and instead was brainwashed with his insanity and is forcing her kids into it. She’s a cunt who deserves to be showered in rotten eggs for granting anyone else control over her well being.

  • JohnR

You know that as sad and disgusting this whole thing is and the light it sheds on what is most likely much more wide spread within these types of cults It will just cement the loyalty of the hart core cult followers, they will claim their faith is under attack and the cash will flow.

    • Villago Delenda Est

Yes, even though their “faith” is based on degrading other human beings.

Oh, wait. Females are not human. My bad.

      • Dee Andee

They’re either considered as not AS human as men, or that they should be super-human by the same men–as in, they should be in charge of keeping men’s penises in line and if men get out of control, it’s their fault. They also should have super-human emotions and readily & easily forgive their abusers.

  • JohnR

It would seem that in the Duggar clan it does not in fact get better. Worster and worster.

  • frrolfe

    Dear Penthouse,
I never thought this would happen to me but, while working for Mr Huckabee in his General Store during my spring break from home-schooling I was tasked with emptying the trash.

While doing as ordered by my legal superior, I was forced to dive to the bottom of the dumpster where I got the shock of my life. There was a collection of filthy magazines with names like “Ample ladies for ample gents”, “The karma sutra for the over 40 stone man” and also too, an illustrated copy of “Thank heaven for little girls”.

I was horrified! some prevert (possibly even Satan) had put this filth there knowing that it was likely to be found by a totally innocent boy of between 13 and 17. I brought these books home and have never looked back!!!

    Josh D*

Name has been changed to protect the identity of FRC executive (retired)

    • Mehmeisterjr

You get my up-caret but I would suggest that this letter is better suited to Pedohouse magazine.

      • frrolfe

        Sorry, you’re absolutely right.

  • TheBidenator

I just had a thought…I know the statute of limitations may have run out on charging Josh Duggar (although I think with mitigating circumstances given the pedophile sheriff the case should be reopened) but can’t the parents still be charged with failure to protect and the state can take steps to protect those children? As awful as it is to yank away children from their parents consider the religious cult and sexual abuse these kids have been subject to; it might be the only chance for normalcy that they have.

Oh and fuck you TLC for exploiting this sick family, the horrid Quiverfull movement and all the other backwoods hick fucks that you broadcast because morans will watch them and say “ayup, they jus’ like us!”

    • Celtic_Gnome

Actually, the morans watch so they can feel superior.

I’m surprised that Ma and Pa Duggar didn’t arrange a stoning of the daughters who enticed Josh to rape them.

  • Beaumarchais?

#8 is a doozy: “If you had to choose between being physically abused and being mighty in spirit…”

If that’s the fucked-up choice, I’d go with not being physically abused. I’ll handle the mighty in spirit on my own, thanks.

    • grmpy

I handled my mighty spirit last night. :)

  • YayConspiracy

point 1 to 3 are also interesting. Listen to me little sister Duggar: Your body is worth jack shit and your spirit is all that matters. So don’t whine over some little rape: it’s only your fucking body. Your spirit is fine and dandy. Duggar sister: “so why do I feel so awful?”

        • Villago Delenda Est

In a world where Jim Bob Duggar is not yet behind bars, would you blame the kid for not being inclined to come out of there?

      • Mehmeisterjr

My niece’s baby held on for bloody ever. I am happy to report that, after a colicky start, she has turned into what objective observers report to be the cutest, sweetest, smartest wonderchild ever. So there’s that to look forward to.

      • dimplasm

          • ThatDale

We told our child it was the “music truck.” Prevented many a tantrum.

      • Blank Ron

        • DemmeFatale

I remember screaming “There’s no baby in here!”
I was 10 days overdue, and when labor (finally) happened, I was (out of my mind) sure that it was just a plot to torture me.

      • Vienna Woods

I was firmly convinced that I would go down in history as the first pregnant woman to never give birth. Then the labour pains started. This too shall pass.

  • Walter Wellstone

Well that’s some fucked up shit: If the abused was not at fault (ha! prove it, you whore…) the abused can expect to be “compensated” with “spiritual power”. That’s tricky because if the abused can’t really identify whether said spiritual power has been delivered (how the fuck do you know when a non-existent deity has given you something?) chances are the poor thing is going to feel that he/she was at fault. You lose no matter what. Fucked up shit indeed.

  • Walter Wellstone

          • Virginia Dreaming

Wow, the christians/lions symbolism never occurred to me. I was just thinking of a really big kitten and how angry it makes me that these people are completely willing to sacrifice their children’s emotional well-being for their faith, Pa Duggar’s political career (he was running in a senate primary when the daughters told them) and then their TV show fame. And I do mean all their children. Molesting hurts everyone involved.

          • bozilingus

Is it possible that the Christians that were being fed to the lions by the Romans were Duggar-style Christians? Could explain a lot.

          • Celtic_Gnome

The Romans were religiously tolerant. They didn’t care what you believed so long as you obeyed the rules, paid your taxes, and provided enough warm bodies for the Roman army. The early Christians had a habit of going into other houses of worship and throwing down there religious leaders so they could preach about the One True God. It made people disorderly, and disorder cost money. Hence, persecution.

It seems like just one short book promotion ago, Mike Huckabee was shocked to the ‘nads by the naughty words coming from the sweet, virginal mouths of the Fox News jezebels. I bet they’re relieved to see the back of his fat ass for the last time. For starters, they can get by on 50% less chemical mace.

    • Annitte

He will be back once he rakes in some campaign money then it will be back to his show.

  • Joshua Norton

We aren’t going to go into the Duggar family’s vicious, fork-tongued hypocrisy regarding gay people or trans people

Then by all means, allow me:

Homosexuals = pedophiles, creeps, sodomites, will burn in hell, shouldn’t be married.

Josh Duggar = pedophile, creep, sodomite, will burn in hell, shouldn’t be married. Jesus forgives.

    Any questions?

    • Mehmeisterjr

Yeah, I have a question. WTF?

      • Biel_ze_Bubba

        Jesus has the same question.

  • Callyson

Do avail yourself of the opportunity to read the whole thing.

I made it through about half of this horror. Jesus fucking Christ…

    • dimplasm

I think you mean “lithe little girl bodies”.

  • Walter Wellstone

“Gothard’s takeaway was that boys should not change their sisters’ diapers and that his toddler sisters caused their own molestation by wearing towels out of the bath. The boy concurs: if the girls had been modest, and his parents hadn’t made him babysit, he probably would not have abused his sisters sexually.”

And this is the argument behind the burqa. The funny thing is that these fuckers hate Muslims. Josh Duggar twitted a lot of shit against the way Islam treats women. The whole thing would be funny if it weren’t so horrible.

    • Dee Andee

But, they’re enlightened! They let women show their sinful faces and alluring hair!

      • jmk

No, actually, they’re kind of iffy about the hair…many of them teach that it should be covered as a sign of submission to their owner/operator.

        • Dee Andee

Some do, true. But not the Duggars, in fact, they teach that the husband should dictate how his wife wears her hair, and even learn to help style it just the way he likes.

          • jmk

I’m not sure which is creepier.

          • sw19womble

Reminds me of an X-Files episode :/

          • Lady Bug

In one of the earlier episodes it was explained that girls where their hair wavy because “Daddy likes it that way.” I’m assuming that once they get married their coiffure goes under the jurisdiction of their husbands.

          • Clockwork Eggplant

They have wavy hair because that’s how their pervert cult leader Bill Gothard likes it. Seriously, he preached that loose waves was the most “godly” of hair styles. And what if you have very straight hair or very tightly coiled curly hair? Wouldn’t spending a lot of time and effort struggling to make your hair look a certain way be considered vain and “immodest”? Apparently not, so long if doing so lets one old man get his rocks off.

          • Swampgas_Man

Between you and Lady Bug up there, I’m still shuddering.

          • Lily

Jim Bob shouldn’t rush to get his beautician’s license anytime soon. If Michelle’s hair is an example of his handiwork, he needs remedial help.

      • Jenny
    • When the story first broke, I thought that there were only two ways that this story could be worse. The “blame the girls” was one of them, and yup, there it is being trotted out. The second one was having one or more of the girls “apologize” for “tempting him.” I’m rather hoping that doesn’t happen, but with these idiots, I’m not betting against it.

      • KenRob

They probably made the girls stand up in Church & admit their guilt in seducing Josh in front of the whole congregation, further shaming & humiliating them & ensuring they never again report any male on female attack again.

        • Jen_Baker_VA

What Ken said. They have probably already made the girls apologize for tempting him. There is a rumor (internet rumor bad!!!!) that Michelle tried to seek outside help before buckling under to give in to her husband on this, so I am betting what she was seeking help for were her daughters.
At least I hope so. I REALLY hope she is not so monstrous as to not make even a feeble attempt to get those girls help outside the cult.

      • Villago Delenda Est

Yes, they “tempted” him…it’s like they offered him some milk and cookies and he could not resist.

Gag, puke, gag, puke…these people are beyond disgusting

  • RecreationalPilot

…the constant lessons that Eve (even in the form of his preteen sisters, apparently) is there to tempt him from righteousness, I mean my god.

God is omnipotent, all-seeing, and all knowing. He created Eve with the the intent to free Adam from his hamster-like existence in the cage called The Garden of Eden. Without Eve, Adam would not have escaped that ignorant prison. Which brings up other points: Why did God create Adam with male parts, in God’s image, then there were no women around? Also, God knows all, but doesn’t know Eve’s actions, foresee them, allows them to occur, allows a deceptive snake in the Garden? Come on.

If you believe that people are the incestuous offspring of Adam & Eve, and then the incestuous offspring of Noah’s family, then you are too stupid to realize that, in that storyline, it was God’s intent, all along to have Eve free Adam from The Garden of Eden.

    • Villago Delenda Est

Fuck, you’re using that Satanic “intelligence” stuff. Stop it right now! The power of Christ compels you!

      • Biel_ze_Bubba

We like to think of it as “common sense.”

      • Silver_Witch

Compels me to barf everytime I read about Josh Dugger!!

    • Dee Andee

When I was a little girl of about 8, in Sunday School at my Presbyterian church, I asked the teacher how did the sons of Adam & Eve have children if there were no girls? Did she say that A&E probably had daughters but that daughters weren’t important enough to be mentioned in the Bible? Nope. Did she say that Cain & Abel married their own sisters? Oh hell no. She said they married women from outer space. I shit you not. I never really believed in God after that despite trying my ‘damndest.’ I wonder why.

      • Virginia Dreaming

You might want to read a book by Carl Reiner called “NNNNN.” He addresses that issue in a really funny way.

        • Dee Andee

I’ll check that out, thanks! :)

      • dimplasm

Mine was when I was about 5 and asked about the dinosaurs. That was the most bullshit answer I had ever heard in my young life. I haven’t ever really recovered belief after that. And Gawd knows, I tried too. Mostly to fit in.

      • Well, that’s not in Genesis, but this is:

1And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. 3And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. 4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

        • Lily

I wouldn’t trust whatever Bible this is. It’s “bear” children, not “bare” children. Maybe this is the version the Duggars were using?

        • Annitte

Problem with that theory. men didn’t begin to multiply till after Cain and Abel had sex with someone. Supposedly they were the only people on earth with their parents. Then after the flood only Noah, his wife and kids. hmmmm

    • Biel_ze_Bubba

“Why did God create Adam with male parts, in God’s image, then there were no women around”

Because God has male parts, obviously.
Which, of course, raises some other troubling questions.

      • Playonwords

It explains the Milky Way, mythologically.

  • Virginia Dreaming

If Ma and Pa Duggar practiced a little self control (or birth control) they might not have some many kids that they would be forced to rely on one unstable kid to supervise their other kids. Or they might have had the time to actually teach the first kid to respect the other kids and not use them as his own personal porn collection.

    • dimplasm

They don’t care what he did. This all about the shame of people finding out and not being awed by Josh. Those sisters aren’t even on the radar for this bunch. They do arranged marriages for social and political contacts. Those girls are literally just chattel.

      • darnyoudarnyoutoheck

Cheerful, soft spoken, obedient cattle. Barf.

        • Biel_ze_Bubba

          Chattel = “Cheerful cattle”
I always wondered about the etymology of the word.

          • darnyoudarnyoutoheck

Ha, hadn’t noticed that. Autocorrect FTW

        • Annitte

It is a requirement in their “faith” that the kids present a cheerful countenance no matter what. No real emotions allowed. Failure to smile gets you punished. Poor damaged people.

Got to suspect something when every single thing is described as precious and sweet. Life isn’t like that.

    • Villago Delenda Est

The entire “quiverfull” movement is based on cranking out children to be brainwashed into being soldiers or incubators for the cult. There’s no such thing as “birth control” among these loons…the entire idea is to flood the nation with Jeebofascist zombies.

      • bozilingus

Maybe this is where zombies are actually “the walking brain-dead”.

      • Virginia Dreaming

I hear you, and at an intellectual level I get it. But I am also a parent and a teacher, and emotionally I cannot grasp their point of view. I cared more for, and had more compassion for my students than these people have for their own children. I wouldn’t treat anyone like this, not even those rare students I clashed with.

Hai! Fancy meeting you here! [TBM waves back]

        • Portia Elm

I thought that had to be you, TBM

    • Biel_ze_Bubba

Hey, the girl coulda been making it up. Along with her sisters. Including the one who was 6, at most. But Josh denied it, so no “evidence” . . . any father would have concluded that there was no problem, right?

      • Annitte

She was 4 and 5 when this occurred.

  • Tio_Doidinho

BTW, too, also: Duggar police reports were just destroyed on a judge’s orders. Can’t imagine why!

    • Zippy

Judge Stacey Zimmerman was appointed by Mike Huckabee- there are some serious screws being tightened to make this go away

      • Biel_ze_Bubba
        • Playonwords

She looks like Norman Bates’ mother!

      • Virginia Dreaming

I wonder if someone threatened her with a sidewalk if she didn’t have the reports destroyed.

        • Redgyal

I see what you did there.

      • Villago Delenda Est

Good luck with that…this thing is real, and it’s here, and the implications are staggering.

Fuckabee is going down, and he’s taking all the other religious nuts with him.

    • Biel_ze_Bubba

The court order says that the victim who “requested”
destruction of the police report is still a minor . . .which means that at least one of the girls was six – or younger – at the time she was molested.

      • Jen_Baker_VA

Which is what I tried to argue with a supporter (There…are people supporting him, because God Forgives! erm…what about Lot? Sodom and Gammorah? All those -ites? nm, God Forgives!) that one of the victims was as young as six and they were all, it does not say that! And I was like dude…it says right there, one of the victims, a MINOR, requested the report destroyed. If this did happen 12 years ago, that makes her at best 5 or 6 at the time of the incident.
The answer, of course, that I am just a liberal hater *facepalm* Homeschool don’t include maths?

        • Annitte

Hey if the devout believe a woman should be turned to salt for looking over her shoulder and disobeying her husband I would have no problem with 3 pillars of salt somewhere in Arkansas, gently melting in the spring rain.

      • Everybodhi

The four girls were 5-11 when they reported it to their parents.

        • Annitte

The victim who requested the destruction was 4 when it began. A toddler.

  • Rick Hill

Masterwhatsis would be more a sin because women and young women are just property .

  • Tansy Geek

I am struck particularly that the boy refers to children and his younger siblings as “little people”. It’s weird way of de-personalizing his victim.

    • rebecca

I see it more as de-CHILDREN-izing them. They’re like adults, but just little ones! No harm no foul.

      • Villago Delenda Est

I’ve read this is pretty much how 18th Century European aristocrats saw children. Hmmm….

        • Tansy Geek

Didn’t they out-source all their actual child rearing to wet nurses and such? They had no actual day to day exposure to children, or how their food was prepared, for that matter. Swans arrived with all their feathers in place when served and children just wore smaller clothes and spoke Latin from birth.

      • Tansy Geek

The boy even has this arguement with himself. Saying they could have been better instructed, but mom maybe didn’t want them to be ashamed of their bodies except that he wouldn’t have transgressed if they were ashamed. Or something.

  • sw19womble

Oh great, time for my third Silkwood Shower in as many days…. :((((((

  • alwaysamazed

Who knew..pedophiles are people that balked at sweeping the kitchen floor and taking out the trash when they were younger. So maybe parents should never give their kids chores to do, problem solved..yeah that’s it!!

    • Annitte

Gosh Both my brother and I skived off of doing chores as kids and teens. When force to take out the trash we grumbled and bitched We sulked we didn’t do our homework any more than we could help and we almost never displayed a joyful countenance, My brother used some dope we did not molest small children. We grew up to be responsible adults my brother is a doctor specializing in caring for the aged and I run a business.

Make the kids do the chores and let them sulk, at least it is an honest emotion.

  • Vienna Woods

Probably already been said, haven’t read all the comments yet, but just from the first few paragraphs I can confidently say that there is not a teenage boy ON THE PLANET who writes like that. I speak as a teacher of teenage boys for 25 years.

  • Unforgotten

‘I am sorry, Duggar girls. Also, that your parents and brother are such pieces of shit.’
    Make mine your words.
    Every single one of them.

  • SFRealness

You know, I grew up in a secular household watching R-rated 80s and 90s horror films when I was a kid and plenty of early internet porn (when online videos were a novelty) when I was teenager. And yet somehow I managed to get through adolescence without molesting anyone. It must be a miracle!

Wait – I *did* become a “practicing homosexual” – which is way worse to these people, right? Goddamnit!

    • Unforgotten

Didn’t the whole BULL**** ‘He/she who watches porn becomes a criminal/serial killer/lesser human being’ started with that stunt Ted Bundy pulled on Patterson the day before he was executed?

      • SFRealness

I think he definitely promoted that idea, yea.

What fundamentalists don’t realize that is that if sexuality isn’t treated as something dirty and shameful to begin with, teenagers aren’t going to have fucked up responses to sexuality when they’re confronted with it later on. Anyone who can’t tell the difference between a 25-year-old model and a toddler already had MAJOR issues before they ever “picked up a magazine behind a dumpster.”

    • Sheepshagger

      Practice makes perfect mate!

    • Clockwork Eggplant

That’s another thing that is so awful about this. You just know that if Josh had been involved with a boy his own age (consensually and non-incestuously even!) he would not have gotten off nearly so lightly.

Hmm, I could really go for some 80s horror films right now. Aliens maybe? The alien queen was a much better parent to her brood than Jim and Michelle is to theirs.

      • Jen_Baker_VA

Lightly? He would have been shipped to some mission in Thailand or somewhere else permissive and they would have gone around going “Josh? Oh, he is doing the Lord’s work in such and such!”
Out of sight, out of mind

        • Villago Delenda Est

No, not Thailand. The Thais have a much healthier attitude about sex than the Duggars do.

          Might have actually fixed Josh.

        • Mehmeisterjr

Or, alternatively, passed around the Arkansas pedo ring like a party favor, since they are as hypocritical about molesting boys as they are about everything else.

        • Clockwork Eggplant

Shoot, no need to waste money on a plane ticket, I’m sure there are places in Arkansas where you could lock up a gay kid and psychologically torture them until they comes back to the lord. I doubt that they get to just work on some home improvements while the statue of limitations runs down.

That’s how it goes in these ultra-fundie circles, where being gay is the most sinful of sins. Sexually assault little girls? Don’t worry, your victims will get blamed for it all and get pressured into forgiving you! Kissed a boy at a homeschooling conference? Welp, at best you get to enjoy some conversion “therapy” or you get kicked out and good luck ever seeing your family again!

          • Jen_Baker_VA

Normally I would agree with that, but we’re speaking of self aggrandizing people who pimped their own daughters out, basically, for a political office and have a lot of money. They’d have taken the missionary route so they could point and go see? SEE what a fine upstanding boy we have? Those camps after all are sort of public and anyone could see him taken there and know why.

  • Wee Mousie

“Dinah does not listen to her father, Jacob, and gets raped. In another, Tamar does listen to her father, King David, and gets raped”

Obviously, they should have followed Jezebel’s solution and self-defenstrated themselves, and allowed their broken bodies to be eaten by dogs.

    • ahughes798

Didn’t one of those biblical dudes give his daughter to a bunch of soldiers to have fun with?

      • Wee Mousie

Not quite so simple as that.

Dinah the daughter of Jacob visited some women where her father had purchased land, and the prince in that land took her to his bed, but apparently Dinah was good in his bed so the prince had his father ask Jacob for her hand (and other parts.).

Jacob finally agreed, provided the men of their city were circumcised, which they were, and three days later Jacob and Dinah’s brothers slew the prince, his father, Dinah and all the men of the city with sore dicks, because they had treated their sister, Dinah, as a harlot, and beside they were God’s chosen people not some Hill Williams from beyond the civilization of Canaan. — Genesis 34

        • Annitte

          And the daughter as well.

  • 3FingerPete

The girls probably did receive counseling…from Jim Bob. Didn’t he conduct pre-marriage counseling for all his married kids? As the male authority figure of the household it is his responsibility.

    • KenRob

He undoubtedly guided their “sex edumacation” with his hands and…. also, too.

    • Annitte

      Probably and ewwwww!

  • Swampgas_Man

The more I read about our Christian duty to forgive these creeps, the more I remember the line, “Forgive your enemies, but only after they’ve been taken out and hanged.”

    • Jen_Baker_VA

Christians are taught to forgive, and also to love, even the most heinous of people. Get this- whether they are truly repentant or not.
They are not, however, called to ever let their children within 1000000000 miles of these people.
Forgiveness is a good tool, but trust is another matter entirely.

      • Unforgotten

There was this episode in one of the earliest seasons of Law and Order – SVU about a serial rapist that was never caught, but they had his DNA on file. For some political reason the whole gang had to grab him before two or three days passed, when the statute of limitation would hit the case and the guy would be free from legal persecution.
        Anyway…
At some point in the story they interview the victims, and surprise! Not only one of them forgave the rapist, but she made clear that she knew his name and everything else, and that she would not give it to the police!
        Why?
He had ‘seen the light’ and had became a member of her church…
I always thought that it could only happen in fiction, a victim of such a kind of crime hinder the prosecution of her attacker due to shared religious beliefs…
I sure am hoping that it stays there.

        • Annitte

          It doesn’t.

      • OrdinaryJoe

I can still hear my Catholic school catechism teacher Sister Mary Martinet say forgiveness is a process that begins with confession and then contrition. I have not heard Doggugger express either but maybe Protestant Jeebuuzz is less rigid about these things.

        • charlotte

But Joe according to them as Catholics we aren’t real Christians because we don’t believe in a literal interpretation of the bible.

          • ahughes798

So that’s it? I always wondered why some x-tians don’t believe that Catholics or Mormons aren’t Christians, even though both groups worship Christ.

          • Annitte

Heck I know some who hold that Episcopalians, Presbyterians and Methodists are not Christians because they are not evangelical The farther to the fringe one goes the smaller in numbers are the elect.

      • D_C_Wilson

It’s always interesting how they’re quick to forgive one of their own for some of the most heinous acts, but someone outside of their fundamentalist cult is forever beyond redemption and is bound for Hell, even if they’ve never harmed another human being and their only “sin” is violating some ancient Bronze Age superstition that made sense when a bride’s value could be measured in goats.

    • My mother put it a different way: “you don’t have to hate rattlesnakes, just don’t be around them”. By her standards, the Duggar family and those around the, are a vipers’ nest no decent person should want to be around.

  • Sheepshagger

When I was about six my mother started sending me and my three older sisters off to Sunday school every week. I could never understand why because we were distinctly non religious, and I used to envy mum and dad who got to stay in a warm bed while we trekked off a cross two miles of wet farmland to a draughty church to listen to some old ladies croon about Jesus and starving Africans.
When we got home mum was usually in bed with a cup of tea and a cigarette looking very happy with the world. Aged about twenty I suddenly put two and two together and realised they was humping. This is my entire experience of Jesus related sex.

    • Beaumarchais?

Well, there’s one good reason for religion! We’ll put it on the scale.

  • Pinball or Submission

When you receive physical abuse, you gain spiritual power. Once you have built up enough spiritual power, you can stage a comeback by unleashing a powerful hyper combo attack.

    • If only the poor Duggar girls DID gain awesome mutant powers, like the ability to explode pedobear heads at 30 pages.

    • Querolous

Sounds like something Derphack Chopra would say.

  • Matt Jones

Subtitle for this post: “Exploring the fine line between homeschooling materials and a how-to guide on setting up your own criminal conspiracy to molest children”.

In all seriousness, it seems like it’s increasingly hard to tell if the patriarchal religion is the cause of the kiddy-diddling or the COVER STORY.

    • Annitte

Evidently a close family friend, you are not going to spill those beans as a politician unless you totally trust the guy. I suspect there are more shoes teetering on the edge.

  • Teto85

Duggar family’s religious advice to their daughters: stop molesting yourself stop molesting yourself…

    • KenRob

Yes, and “Stop tempting your brother you evil jezebels, you’ll burn in hell for what you’ve done to him”.

  • Virginia Dreaming

I was just reading the Washington Post timeline. It says that the building Josh worked on as his counseling was owned by Bill Gothard, the guy who designed these shitty lessons in victim blaming. The building was an old VA hospital which was purchased by Hobby Lobby, then given to Gothard’s group, which had no comment on whether a counseling service was located at the site as it was being rehabbed. Also the pedophile state cop who gave Josh Duggar a stern talk, told the family that since they had taken Josh to counseling no further action was possible.
There are freakin’ pedophiles and child abusers everywhere you look in this damn story. I really do wonder if Jim Bob Duggar is one as well, since so many of his friends are.

    • rebecca

thanks for the tip about the timeline, it’s helpful!

    • Mehmeisterjr

Hobby Lobby. Hobby Lobby. Where have I heard that name before?

    • Biel_ze_Bubba

Combine with the Duggars’ tie to child re-gifter Justin Harris, and you have to wonder why Xtian fuckery isn’t a more popular topic with the conspiracy theory nuts.

      • Annitte

In addition big admirers of Michael Pearl who advised beating your child with plumbing pipe till they are utterly compliant and their will is broken. starting with blanket training infants by beating them.

“There are freakin’ pedophiles and child abusers everywhere you look in this damn story.”

See 4th post above. There’s a huge and horrifying story evolving here.

    • Swampgas_Man

There are freakin’ pedophiles and child abusers everywhere you look in this damn story. One doesn’t have to be paranoid to see a conspiracy.

      • DissidentFish

Not to put too fine a point on it, but if you say “We should start our own church” in the 20th or 21st century, it really looks like you want to create a powerless class of females that you can fuck at will. Young, or adult, depending on how sick hearted you are.

    • It is a fact that most children or teens who molest other children were themselves molested. 5 will get you 10 that this was the case with Josh.

  • Dorothy Nelson

Where’s your goddam Pulitzer? You have absolutely uncovered the throbbing, evil root of the Duggar madness. Thank you.

  • chascates

Remember how Lot offered his virginal daughters to the crowd who wanted to have sex with whoever-the-hell-it-was who came to tell Lot HE WAS THE BEST IN OLE’ SODOM?!?!?!

    • Dorothy Nelson

And then when the daughters got Lot drunk and then had sex with him? I’m sure that happened just as Lot told it. That Bible, jam packed with morality.

  • Biel_ze_Bubba

CAN THIS POSSIBLY GET ANY BETTER WORSE?
    Why yes. Yes, it can:

The “clinic” that Josh Duggar “attended” after his parents learned he had
molested multiple young girls has been revealed as the Basic Life
Principles Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, which offers “faith-based
    healing.”
Bill Gothard, the Christian grifter who hired Josh to do construction work on the center, was accused in 2014 of sexually harassing women who worked at
his ministry, including teenagers, and not reporting cases of child
    abuse.
He resigned after the accusations became public, but (surprise) was never convicted.

Then ‘IT’ will hit the fan.
BTW, in the poor girl’s case, her parents will face years behind bars because they let it happen. What about the Duggars?
Or is it really different in Arkansas?

          • Annitte

Unfortunately statute of limitations. The police didn’t find out till it had expired.

Ponzi schemes targeting the elderly are the single largest industry in Florida. Rick Scott’s whole administration is a Ponzi scheme targeting the elderly. Given that fact, David Gothard must stink to the, uh, high heavens if he can offend even the barely-functioning nose of AG Pam Bondi.

    • Annitte

If he got any counseling from that setup the Gothard people broke the law. They are obliged to report to the police and Child protective services in Arkansas Any counselor and any member of the clergy ( catholic confessionals exempted) IF they didn’t provide real professional counseling with trained people. He got no counseling just talked to people.

I take some solace in the belief that TLC had to know that the Duggar brood was fucked up. They had to know because fucked up people and families are their stock and trade: Honey Boo Boo, the little people (both the ones on the farm and the doctor one who married that guy), the trailer park people–all of them are FUBAR. Hell, even the wedding dress people are what my grandmother would call “touched in the head.”

    • Jen_Baker_VA

I quite liked What not to Wear though. Guilty Pleasure

      • major_asshole

I liked that show quite a lot. And it did actually fit in with the learning aspect of the channel. The only problem I had was that they only counseled something like two guys over the course of that show.

And we all know that there are a lot of men who desperately need to learn how to dress (myself included, some days)

    • OrdinaryJoe

Hmmm, TLC. If they bring this shitsmear back a la Huckabee, the name of the show unofficially becomes, “Just say yes to the molest” ?

    • Swampgas_Man

I’m scared to ask what the little people have done. I rather like the Lifetime “Little Women” show because it gives me half a chubby.

      • major_asshole

I’m pretty sure Matt Roloff (I think that’s his name) is or was completely broke after repeated shitty business ideas (wedding venue, amusement park, etc) that never seemed to work. Or at least that’s the general feeling I got after being all but forced to watch that show.

Who knows? That family could be a group of tax cheats and we’d never know until someone slips up.

  • major_asshole

I’d like to point out that there is a really high likelihood that Josh Duggar did not stop molesting his sisters after a year.

    • Swampgas_Man

I’d like to point out that, given the odds (and I mean ODD), it is probable that he is not the only rapey member of that cult.

      • major_asshole

It would not surprise me in the least if he was taught that behavior by someone inside the family. Hell, he might have even been abused himself.

        • ahughes798

I think Jim Bob is a major perv, for reasons I have mentioned before. Like showing his daughter’s fiance how to kiss his daughter. How the fuck would Jim Bob know how Jenna likes to be kissed?

          • Annitte

Agree there is something smarmy and just a bit off with him. The few times I watched the program there was something just a bit off key, he was a bit too tactile. I had an uncle who behaved much like that with his teen daughter, it turned out all was not right in that home. As for his so called marriage counseling all I can say is embarrassing. If my parents had hauled my husband to be in for those lessons there would have been an elopement.

    • Malmborg Implano

The psychology of pedophiles is pretty consistent. They are incapable of empathizing with their victims or of truly understanding why what they do is wrong. They are very skilled at covering for themselves and recruiting allies to help them keep reoffending. The fact that it’s so easy to identify vulnerable children and teens, manipulate them into the right circumstances for exploitation, and intimidate into silence afterwards and that it’s so unlikely for them to be believed and protected when they do tell means that over a lifetime a pedo can rack up hundreds of victims without fear of ever being punished for it. There is no known way to rehabilitate them or effectively stop them from offending other than making it physically impossible for them to get near potential victims. So if you know somebody who’s doing this, please stop making excuses for him/her and report them to anyone who’ll listen.

      • Mehmeisterjr

The only guy I know for sure is a pedophile is safely in jail and, given that we went to school K-12 together and I am an old, his highly deserved and very long sentence is probably, in effect, for life. I knew he was a snotty, entitled jerk from his teen years forward and avoided him, never even saw him after High School. He periodically got into sordid criminal scrapes that made the news and always used money and family influence to escape the worst consequences. Even knowing all that, I was shocked when he was finally arrested for trying to a get a woman to pimp her young daughter to him. (She called the cops immediately, good for her, and they set up a phone sting.) I have to figure this was not his first offense.

The only other guy I knew for sure was a pedophile was also a serial embezzler. He could play the part of an amiable idiot to perfection. Again, even knowing he was a thief, I was surprised by the other stuff. He was stabbed to death shortly after getting paroled for ripping off a charity.

What they had in common was that they were hard to spot as child molesters.

        • Blargh McBlargh

Pedophiles and serial murderers have two things at least in common : One, they do not Just Stop. Death, incapacitation (by illness or something similar) or being caught is the only thing that will prevent a pedophile from reoffending sooner or later – it cannot be cured and all it waits for is opportunity. Second, even if caught and the crime exposed, there are almost always victims that are not known to the authorities, at least at first. The siblings of Josh Duggar that he has admitted to having molested may very well be just the tip of the iceberg considering the kind of unusual and unquestioned access he had to children and remarkable power to stifle any risk of discovery within his own cult, both internal and external to his own family. I would bet cash money that there are more victims out there, but they may not ever come forward. Seeing the circling of the cult’s wagons around the Duggars and the psychotic, rabid defense of all of their actions in the face of all human decency and dignity by these Duggar cultists, I would have to think that any other victims who may be within that circle are terrified beyond imagination at the thought of speaking out. Those are the Duggars I have pity for.

          • vTenebrae

Just remember when discussing the recidivism rate: He has a 5 year old daughter.

      • Annitte

That is why I think I found his statement of why he ( supposedly stopped) to be rather chilling. His reason he stopped because he learned he would mess up his life if he didn’t, it was all about Josh. The rest of it was standard wordage when someone gets caught with their hand in a cookie jar. I would no be surprised if his daughter is at great risk, I have no confidence in their mother protecting them, that would be going against the patriarch of the family.

By the way, has anyone ever noticed how much Huckabee looks like a somewhat portly Hitler? Scribble in a little toothbrush mustache and side-parted black hair, and … Heil Huckabee!

    • Malmborg Implano

The Duggars equal the Kardashians equal the Osbournes. Reality shows are not a healthy or ethical form of entertainment.

      • Bitter Scribe

Yeah, but you don’t have to pay for writers!

        • Left Coast Tom

Considering the Duggars and Honey Boo Boo, I guess it’s also unnecessary to pay for anyone to vet this nonsense.

        • ahughes798

Yep. That’s what happened after the writer’s strike. Reality shows.

      • Wayne Kerr

disagree … like them or not, at least Ozzy Osborne was a Somebody with an impressive history.

      • lopear11

Come on. I agree that reality tv is gross and most of it belongs in the dumpster. But as much as I despise the Kar-trashians, you can’t compare them to the Duggars. You may think Kim K and fam are trashy pigs but that’s a moral judgement. They’ve not broken any laws. They haven’t hurt children and committed crimes that were covered up (as far as we know). Same for the Osbournes. You may not like them or their show, but they are not sick perverts who abuse children.

Josh isn’t wearing glasses or carrying a white cane – so masturbation must have been off the table for him as a wee lad.

  • Perhaps its time the Family Research Council actually lived up to its name!
Starting with: Why are you members so sick and twisted?
    Leading on to:
How can anyone manage to be pathetic enough to waste vast amounts of their time trying to deny other people some small basic rights?

    • Katie Doyle

It ‘s awful, but it’s a living. Money. The rubes send money to further, uh, God’s work, or political bullshit, whichever you prefer.

  • Malmborg Implano

This is why I canceled my cable service. Reality TV. I was not about to pay $60 a month to watch Honey Boo Boo and the Duggars.

  • JParkerSD46

“What we don’t know is if the girls were given any counseling…”. Huh, what??? Haha. Of course, they were given counseling. “You shameless sluts. You tempted this innocent lad with your dirty lady parts and feminine whiles, even while you slept. He couldn’t resist Satan’s reach and it’s all because of you. Go forth and sin no more. Oh, you’re female. You breathe, therefore you sin.” Something like that, I suppose.

    • Mehmeisterjr

      Also, too, keep smiling.

  • Candy Apple

I would like to know why religious fundamentalism and sexual deviancy seem to always go hand-in-hand.

    • Portia Elm

      repression does not control biology.
repression narrows options, biology busts out, more repression needed to cover up “sinful” behavior, anger at repression transferred to “cause of sin” (i.e. the females), the females must be repressed….or sometimes they punish themselves. it’s just a barrel of fun.

  • splashy79

It’s quite the mental gymnastic, saying that men are more able to rule, and should rule because they are suited to it, but when they do wrong it’s the fault of the girls and women, who are not ruling anything.

    • 08Willow

I am so glad that there are others who see this weird reasoning paradox, and call it out. I’ve never understood it, myself.

    • charlotte

I wonder how insecure a male must be not to want a partner but a slave. Mama duggar said educating girls gives them options not to stay married. One woman asked her if she would really want her daughters to have to stay married if she was being beaten? She ignored the question. I want someone to take away her mother of the year awards.

    • Rabbit_Rebozo

Don’t try to think about it too hard. You’ll blow a brain bulb.

  • Blargh McBlargh

Call the firm of Huckabee and Duggar. We’ll fight for YOU !

    • lopear11

This story about the Duggars is not funny AT ALL and it completely sickens me…….. but……. I hate to admit that your post made me laugh out loud.

  • 19th Amendment

Honestly, that photo of those two deviants initiates a gag reflex I was unaware I had.

  • Greg Comlish

At first glance I didn’t think much of the Duggar headlines. Few things surprise me anymore. And from a probabilistic standpoint one would expect that if you keep having kids, eventually you’re going to give birth to a rapist. I mean, that’s just mathematics, people.

And yet, having now been exposed to the details I can now say that this story completely shocked me. Honestly, this story couldn’t have been a greater indictment of rape culture even if it were authored out of whole cloth by a Marxist-feminist graduate student. Looking at this story, one can observe how the expressly Patriarchical family structure, the perverse attitudes towards sex, and the role of religion all combined to exculpate the male for sexual violence while vilifying the female again and again and again. And we know that these factors enabled this sexual violence because the red-handed parents and religious affiliates conveniently generated copious documentation that clearly explains their reasoning. It doesn’t get any more straight-forward than this.

    • charlotte

Not just sexual violence but physical. A woman is to view physical abuse as an opportunity to suffer and become closer to god. And it happens when she does not submit fully. Apparently those 1200~1500 domestic violence deaths yearly are caused by those disobedient women. How dare they die instead of suffering longer!!!

    • Thaumaturgist

It seems that in this kind of patriarchial family, the dominant male is the only person with any power.

Is there such a thing as responsibility without power — responsibility without the right and/or the ability to choose?

If the subordinate males are powerless, do they have any personal responsibility for what they do? Are they, like everyone else in the patriarchial family, the playthings of the dominant male, in the same sense that the ancient Greeks and Romans were the playthings of the gods?

What is the difference between that kind of a take on power and responsibility and the attitude that you’re cool unless the dominant male stops you?

it seems to me that there was a level of toxicity in this family and this whole Quiverfull movement that goes well beyond what any run-of-the-mill Wonketeer could have comprehended a week or ten days ago.

      • Greg Comlish

See, you surmise that only the “dominant male” (ie Josh’s father) had any power, but evidently Josh Duggar had plenty of autonomous power to molest at least five girls. It seems that in this incident Daddy Duggar’s power was limited to shielding his own son from the consequences of repeatedly raping his daughters.

        • Thaumaturgist

Josh had the ability to act. My question is whether Josh felt that he had any personal responsibility for his actions.

It seems to me that in this family, moral responsibility is lodged in the patriarch. The other family members are reduced to the level of what the patriarch lets them get away with. That’s all they have to be concerned about. The moral choices are up to the patriarch.

Throw in the business’s about Satan sneaking through the house, deceiving the kids with his wiles — which is why the tight disciplinary control is needed in the first place — and Josh finds himself in a place where he can go where the evil spirit moves him without personal responsibility for his actions. He’s like the drunk who feels he can blame his conduct on liquor, because he wouldn’t have done such a thing if he hadn’t been drunk.

It seems to me that this family structure removed personal moral responsibility from Josh’s shoulders. I agree that Josh did the deed. I believe his parents set up a toxic situation that freed Josh from the kind of personal responsibility and guilt he would have felt in any normal, healthy family.

          Does that make sense?

  • ThePuckStopsHere

I hate to be a voice crying in the wilderness, but none of this–NONE!-has anything at all to do with the teachings of Christ. It is in fact in direct contravention to those teachings. I am glad I believe in Jesus if for no other reason than I am wholly confident that Josh Duggar will spend all eternity in Hell, burning, for what he did to those children. I believe this because I believe that the Jesus I worship is all about justice and if ever a situation cried out for justice, this would be it. You can’t cure pedophilia because pedophiles don’t believe they are doing anything wrong. They therefore cannot ask for forgiveness. They therefore go to Hell. Where they belong. And fuck you Mick Huckabee for your feeble, assholish attempt to gloss over the crime which has been committed here. I look forward to seeing you in Hell, too.

    • arglebargle

Oh, so you know the “real” Jesus, and God has let you in on the proper way to be christiany. I thought you were supposed to be humble. Claiming you understand the mind of God doesn’t sound very humble. Beside, according to your god, if one of those poor Duggar girls was found to not be a virgin on her wedding night, she should be stoned to death on her fathers doorstep. Doesn’t matter if it was her bound for hell brother that did the deflowering against her will.

      • ThePuckStopsHere

I don’t know about knowing the mind of God and I’m sure I’m insufficiently humble but I can fucking read and what I read is what Jesus said about things like the casting of the first stone and the going and sinning no more and about taking care of the poor; of the least of these and of one another. The rest of it–all the horseshit in Deuteronomy and, for that matter Geniuses–I choose to ignore in favor of what I consider to be the overriding central truths outlined in the New Covenant above. That’s just me. I said I was a Christian, I did not say I was good at it.

        • arglebargle

First of all, I’ve been on vacation so I wasn’t able to respond as quick as I would have liked. More importantly, I apologize for being so confrontational. Not a good way to try to engage in a conversation.

I just think you have to be VERY careful when saying you like certain passages of the bible and not others. If that’s what gets you through the day then good for you. But you can’t say those passages are the word of the Lord Almighty and you don’t have to pay attention to all the Old Testament stuff because obviously that doesn’t apply anymore.

As JESUS said in Matthew 5:17-18, “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For
truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest
letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.” Sounds to me like he’s still against shellfish and mixed linens and tats, and okay with stoning adulterers, etc.

And if you want to choose which parts of your holy book are divine and ignore the rest, then you have to accept the beliefs of those who say their holy book says it’s okay to slam into occupied buildings at 400 mph. And if there is a God you have to accept that maybe they are right and you are going to their version of hell.

I’m not trolling you or trying to be a dick. Just trying to explain my though process. Believe you me, I had enough religion crammed down my throat to last a couple of lifetimes, and am glad I was able to get out and still remain friends with my family.

    • harryeagar

So, the Jesus you worship and that crazy sex stuff in the Bible (like the Epistle to the Romans) got nothing to do with him? Yeah, got it.

      • ThePuckStopsHere

Jesus wrote no epistles. Beyond the 4 books of the Gospel, what Jesus said on the record if you will, I take the inerrant word of God with a grain of salt. When Jesus did speak–and correct me if I’m wrong–I don’t believe he mentioned abortion or homosexuality once. I don’t think that was by accident. So I don’t really care so much what Paul or whoever it was corresponding with the Romans had on his mind.

  • Zhu Bajie

What do you want to bet that Huckabee has sex scandals just waiting to be discovered?

  • Antonin Dvorak

I’m sorry but #8 on that worksheet really has to be mentioned as well:

If you had to choose: No physical abuse or mighty in spirit-what would would choose?

    What the ever-loving fuck?
