And he was such a nice young man

So here’s something you don’t see every day: A guy who says the Holocaust never happened — or was, you know, “greatly exaggerated” — is now calling for “Nuremberg Trial nastiness” for climate scientists and other criminals who have wrecked the economy and freedom. Let’s Wonksplore what may be the dumbest rightwing stupidity we’ve read all week — although we do need to caution that Erik Rush’s column at WND doesn’t come out until Thursdays.

The idiot this time out is David Cole, who was a big celebrity in the Holocaust Denial crowd back in the 1990s. He made a few videos claiming that there were no gas chambers at Auschwitz, the Nazis actually murdered far fewer than 6 million Jews, and that there was no overall Nazi plan for genocide. Instead, he said that the Nazis just wanted to expel Jews from Europe and also use them for slave labor, and things just sort of went a little wrong after that. Cole relished the notoriety that came with being a Jew who was just asking questions about the “official narrative,” but eventually dropped out of sight after receiving death threats from the Jewish Defense League, and perhaps because he wasn’t altogether comfortable rubbing shoulders with loons who not only loved HIS work, but also Timothy McVeigh’s.

In 1998, Cole wrote a letter in which he seemed to recant his Holocaust denial, and then he sort of disappeared for a while, resurfacing during the early days of the Tea Party movement as “David Stein” and promoting rightwing political get-togethers with a company called “Republican Party Animals.” That second career kind of fell apart when a girlfriend revealed his real identity in 2013, and suddenly not even Breitbart fans wanted to party with a genuine Holocaust Denier. He told The Guardian shortly afterward that despite the 1998 letter, he hasn’t really changed his views on the Holocaust, saying that while maybe there were some gas chambers here and there, “there is still a lot of murkiness about the camps. I haven’t changed my views. But I regret I didn’t have the facility with language that i have now. I was just a kid.”

So it’s not that he was wrong or anything, he just should have phrased stuff better. And now, like so many other rightwing slugs who have been just a little too openly racist for the polite loonosphere, Cole has found himself a home at Taki’s Magazine, where he’s moved on from denying history to denying science. Not that he sees it that way, of course; the REAL intellectual dishonesty, he insists, is coming from leftist scientists who want to raise your taxes and take away your freedom, no matter how bankrupt their so-called science is.

How does he know this? Well, for one thing, The Left is constantly “moving the goalposts” on when the climate Apocalypse is supposed to happen, never mind that science has always talked about the effects as gradually accumulating, and not subject to a deadline:

Every doomsday prediction has been postponed when Armageddon didn’t arrive at the appointed time. “If we don’t pass so-and-so law or enact so-and-so new tax by 1992, New York will be underwater and there’ll be no more ice at the poles. Did I say ’92? I meant ’98. Did I say ’98? I meant 2002. No, 2006. Actually, it’s 2010. I meant to say 2015. Seriously this time, it’s 2020.” And on and on.

Why, yes, that’s exactly what no climate scientist has ever said. Those damned hypocrites, refusing to have actually said what David Cole says they did!

Cole then identifies what he says is the most egregious example of goalpost moving in the climate “debate” (which isn’t a debate, but never mind):

The debate is no longer about when warming will kill the last polar bear, but when the seventeen-year “pause” (or “hiatus”) in warming will end. See, everyone agrees that warming has “plateaued,” but the ideologues swear that it’s going to start up again any time now. The game of predicting Judgment Day has given way to a new game: predicting the end of the “pause.”

That’s a pretty damning example, except for the part about “everyone” agreeing that global temperature increases have plateaued. Now, it’s true that almost everyone who likes to lie about climate change agrees that climate change stopped in 1998, but it’s pretty difficult for the scientific community to predict an “end” to a phenomenon that just plain doesn’t exist: there is no pause in global warming! Scientific American has debunked that bullshit. So has NASA.

Nevertheless, in a move that he perfected back in his Holocaust denial days, Cole insists it’s time for climate scientists to start accepting his definition of what constitutes reality — that the “pause” is real — or admit defeat and face the consequences:

These “experts” have hobbled industry, put people out of work, taxed ordinary citizens, and micro-managed every aspect of people’s lives from lightbulbs to asthma inhalers to grocery bags. If the pause lasts longer than the number of years they concede a “pause” should last, there must be a public reckoning. Haul them in front of congressional committees. Initiate civil suits. Be merciless. I’m talking about some heavy-handed draconian Nuremberg Trial nastiness. Call them to account for pushing burdensome public policies while dismissing as “deniers” those who suggested that the pause was not a pause at all, but an ending.

Perhaps someone should execute Neil deGrasse Tyson while they’re at it.

It’s a lot like when a different Holocaust denier challenged historians to “show me or draw me a Nazi gas chamber” and then rejected every single photograph or blueprint because it was a given that there were no Nazi gas chambers, so no evidence could ever fit his own personal criteria. And since no scientists actually believe that global warming has paused, they’re probably not going to be predicting a date for the “end” of a thing that isn’t actually happening. Also, those climate scientists had better set a firm date after which they promise to stop beating their wives.

“Be merciless. I’m talking about some heavy-handed draconian Nuremberg Trial nastiness.”

Because if there’s anything the Nuremberg Trials were known for, it was the heavy-handed draconian nastiness of lead prosecutor Robert Jackson, whom David Cole has obviously never read, and probably never even heard of.

    • nothingisamiss

      I deny that!

  • Villago Delenda Est

On the subject of Holocaust denial, yes all those near identical eye witness testimonials, not to mention reams of documentary evidence that the Nazis neglected to shred before the end of the war, means that the gas chambers simply did not exist, nor the crematoria, nor the huge camps designed specifically to process Jews, Roma, Soviet POWs, homosexuals, social democrats, annoying protestant prelates, and other “enemies of the Volk” into artificial “snow” to delight the little Polish children nearby.

    Right. Sure.

But the climate denial stuff, which goes out of its way to distort what the boffins are saying RIGHT THIS FUCKING minute does wonders, absolute wonders, for your credibility, David Cole, or whatever the fuck it is you’re calling yourself because you have opinions that are so wildly out of variance with established fact to be something we’d expect Tony Perkins or that niece of Phyliss Schafley, or Phyliss her own dear heart self, to spout.

    • Steverino247

Not to mention the fact that there’s a guy on trial right now in Germany who admits he was at Auschwitz and saw the selection process at work. He’s been shouting from the rooftops about how real is was since 2007 when deniers finally pissed him off enough.

    • JustPixelz

When the U.S. Army liberated concentration camps in Germany, Dwight Eisenhower had this to say

The visual evidence and the verbal testimony of starvation, cruelty and bestiality were so overpowering as to leave me a bit sick. In one room, where they were piled up twenty or thirty naked men, killed by starvation, George Patton would not even enter. He said that he would get sick if he did so. I made the visit deliberately, in order to be in a position to give first-hand evidence of these things if ever, in the future, there develops a tendency to charge these allegations merely to ‘propaganda.’

“Cole relished the notoriety that came with being a Jew who was just asking questions about the “official narrative,”” – Why the irony? One can ask questions about everything, EXCEPT for the Holocaust, then? By the way, the guy went to Auschwitz, made a documentary about the place, and posed specific, technical and very down-to-earth questions about how over a million people could have possibly been murdered in “gas chambers” and cremated there afterwards, given the physical conditions of the place. As far as I know, nobody ever bothered to say exactly what he got wrong, or why his questions were absurd. History is about blind, dogmatic faith or demonstrable facts, after all? Is the Holocaust a religion? And did the author of this essay even bother to watch the documentary she is trying to trash? It may come as a big surprise for her and some of her readers, but snark and sarcasm are not substitutes for arguments.

    • Villago Delenda Est

Fuck, let’s just ignore the eyewitness accounts, the documentary evidence, the railroad manifests, all that shit. Let’s go with wild ass speculation without any of the facts to go with it.

      Yea, that’s the ticket.

Tempt the banhammer, Larry. Tempt it.

      • Larry Mars

“Let’s go with wild ass speculation” – There is zero speculation here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWCOjOj4RAU. This is the physical place where supposedly over a million people were murdered in gas chambers and cremated afterwards (until some years ago, it was supposedly 4 million people who died there; this number was downgraded it and now it is just 1 million). Unless magical, supernatural means were used to do it, it is absolutely impossible that this happened in this place. About “eyewitness accounts”: do you include the hundreds, perhaps thousands of spurious accounts in it? About “documentary evidence”, many tons of documents were rescued by the allied forces. Such a huge plan to gas 6 million people would demand a very complex organization. Show me the documents with the plans and orders for such thing. You can paste the links here if you want.

        • Villago Delenda Est

Nope. The consensus, backed up by eyewitness accounts and documentary evidence provided by the Nazis themselves is that those deemed unfit to work were given “showers” for delousing that were actually showers of Zykon-B, a cyanide based pesticide. Then the corpses were cremated, after everything of possible economic use was removed from them: gold fillings, hair, skin that was actually used to make lampshades. This is not fantasy. This is fact. Something around 1.1 million died at Auschwitz, many of them in the “showers”, but certainly not all. Many died from force labor, or just shot for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Auschwitz had an extensive network of satellite camps that were used for slave labor.

Did all of them die in the showers? No. That doesn’t account for all those who died.

    • sundaytrucker

Not everyone was killed in gas chambers and cremated. The gas chambers started later, prior to that is was just shooting them in a pre-dug mass grave. The gas chambers came about to save on bullets.

      • Villago Delenda Est

There was also a minor problem of regular German soldiers having mental breakdowns after they were ordered to shoot civilians for no other reason than they were Jews. Also, too, firing squads were time and resource consuming to an unacceptable degree, as you note. More efficient, cost effective means needed to be found for carrying out the “Final Solution to the Jewish Question”, which was absolute in writing Nazi policy from 1942 on.

Auschwitz was designed and built to address these vital concerns.

The Nazis helpfully documented all of this. It wasn’t just based on the wild stories of those crazy Jews, you know.

    • RoyalUglyDude

      WTF am I reading?

  • TurdCannon

Though I am far more of a political bedfellow of yours than Mr. Cole’s, I respect him very much as a intellectually honest man and a really funny one. One of the most salient points that his book makes is that there is actually quite a large difference between a “revisionist” and a “denier,” at least most of the time, and that revisionists are regularly shouted down as deniers, or more accurately “DENIERS!!!!!!” When did David Cole EVER deny that there was a holocaust? He has said repeatedly, all through the years, that there were death camps and that people were murdered and that murder is bad — he does not believe that Auschwitz was one of them, that’s all. If he believes the 6 million figure to be probably inaccurate and the number to be somewhat lower, around 4 million, this makes him a “holocaust denier?” I understand, and I believe he does as well, that when you get into this sort of dickering you wind up in bed with out-and-out deniers like Ernst Zundel, who I don’t believe to be intellectually honest. You’re making his point by writing this article: historical facts vis a vis the holocaust can’t be soberly examined and discussed without “DENIER!”

    • sundaytrucker

If he’s talking about 6 million Jews instead of people, he may be right. Jews were the plurality of those killed in concentration camps, but not the majority. Gays, the mentally and physically impaired, Socialist/Communists, and the Roma (Gypsies) were also herded into camps for extermination.

      • Villago Delenda Est

Also keep in mind that millions of Jews were killed in places other than the concentration camps. Many who died in the camps were not even documented as having arrived there. The records are necessarily incomplete, but what records exist are damning. The Allies frankly didn’t believe the stories until they were confronted with the actual Nazi records that documented just how extensive this atrocity was.

And of course, saw with their own eyes Bergen-Belsen, Buchenwald, Dachau, and the other camps they liberated in the West, that gave powerful reasons to believe those stories of the camps in the East.

    • Villago Delenda Est

      David Cole? Intellectually honest?

It is to laugh the laugh of Reinhard Heydrich as he convened the Wannsee Conference.

      • TurdCannon

Yeah, well make your case then. As Larry Mars said below, “snark and sarcasm are not substitutes for arguments.”

        • Mavenmaven

Make our case? To disprove the crazies like you? Thank God Wonkette doesn’t allow comments.

          • TurdCannon

OK, so now thinking that Cole is not a denier and that his ideas are not without merit makes me “one of the crazies.” You don’t need to “disprove” anything I said. I just want to know why someone thinks it laughable that I find Cole to be intellectually honest. Again: he is not a denier. We can’t try to understand part of history and get the numbers and the context right without being nazis?

          • Villago Delenda Est

Unfortunately, trying to deny what history has established by inconvertible means does indicate strongly that one is trying, desperately, to avoid coming to the conclusion of how utterly evil the Nazis were. To be an apologist for them. To deny the monstrous actions they took. To white wash those actions. Why would one want to do that except to somehow rehabilitate these monstrous acts?

          • TurdCannon

Because facts matter. Because the holocaust may be a fact, but “evil” is not. Those acts were carried out by human beings, not monsters. I think it actually lets all of us, nazis included, off the hook by attributing these acts to evil monsters. That doesn’t mean apologizing for anyone. That human beings carried it out is the most fascinating and horrifying aspect of the holocaust and of course people want to understand that. I don’t know that six million is an incontrovertible fact. If it was 7 million or 4 million or 30,000 it was still too many, but facts matter and shouting people down sucks.

          • Villago Delenda Est

Shouting down people who seek to deny facts because they’re inconvenient to their own worldview demonstrates who is being intellectually dishonest, not honest. It’s not those who point out the intellectual dishonesty. David Cole is shouting down history. These human beings proved that human beings can be monsters, as if anyone doubted that before, with centuries of evidence to prove otherwise.

          • TurdCannon

Hey, look at that: we agree. “Shouting down people who seek to deny facts because they’re inconvenient to their own worldview is intellectually dishonest, not honest.” Well said.

          • Villago Delenda Est

And that’s what David Cole and all holocaust deniers do. He is not intellectually honest. He cherrypicks data to “prove” his point and ignores all the evidence that contradicts it. He’s slime.

          • TurdCannon

I think it pretty obvious that he’s on the other end of the applicable down-shoutin’s, but this is about enough out of me.

Ah, you say it like making dick jokes are bad thing. You’re no fun at all.
You drop in out of nowhere to dispense a little wisdom about how David Stein is intellectually honest because you claim he never said explicitly that the Holocaust never happened. But you’re not a troll and not at all intellectually honest. And I’m a model employee since I’m killing time at work typing word type things in the Wonkette comments.
Anyway VDE has done much better job of debating you and providing evidence and none of it matters because none of us a changing our minds about David Stein or anything else including the merits of dick jokes.

          • Jen_Baker_VA

When you deny something, you claim it did not happen, or did not happen in such a way. You can call it revisionist if you would like to, but revisionism is, point of fact, another way of denying actual real fact.
Actual real fact: This guy denied that the holocaust happened. He denied. That there were gas chambers. That +6 million Jews were brutally butchered and gassed and burned and shot and otherwise killed dead by Nazis. Now he is denying that climate change is a problem for humans. Not revising, claiming that it is not happening because there are a couple guys BP and Exxon hired to say so.
This is the very definition of what the word “deny” means, unless the revision you speak of is to revise the dictionary definition of words too?
I find it laughable that you find Cole Intellectually honest because he is not honest. Intellectual, we can debate on that, but honesty implies one is, well, telling the truth.

          • TurdCannon

Thanks for answering Jen, but your facts are wrong. He did not deny that the holocaust happened, nor that there were gas chambers.

          • Villago Delenda Est

Then, why, pray tell, is David Cole/whatever his name is regarded as a pariah to so many, if he was NOT denying what happened at all the death camps?

          • TurdCannon

            that’s a strange sort of argument…

          • Jen_Baker_VA

He denied, in fact, that both the Holocaust and the gas chambers were “as bad” as people made it out. His own wordy words. I very much remember this fellow from the good ole days of the let’s randomly deny one of the biggest horrors of world history 90’s.
I do not know about you, but denying how bad these things were (which, they actually really were) is, in fact, denial.
Once more it seems as if you wish to re-write the definition of the word “denial.”
And my facts are not, actually, wrong, since he really isn’t honest, contradicted himself on several occasions, recanted and then re-recanted on several occasions and otherwise is not in any way shape or form, honest.

          • tiredofdogma

Watch the video “David Cole in Auschwitz — A Jew Questions the Holocaust.” He’s a holocaust denier and a darling of the McVeigh crowd.

    • doktorzoom

If claiming that Auschwitz-Birkenau wasn’t a death camp and didn’t have gas chambers isn’t Holocaust denial, then “denial” has no meaning at all.

    • Enfant Terrible

I dunno. He made some videos in the early 1990s, one at Auschwitz, that are striking precursors of the James O’Keefe method of video journaminimalism. When he resurfaced, he apologized out of one side of his mouth and said that his views hadn’t changed out of the other side. That doesn’t seem intellectually honest to me. Your mileage obviously varies. It appears that your definitions of “denier”, “revisionist” and other words vary as well.

Holocaust deniers are the worst people in the world.

    • LarkintheAM

When I was in high school, my history teacher’s father, who was an army
major and one of the liberators of Buchenwald. What he saw sickened and
horrified him, and when holocaust deniers began to get some press
traction he became a one man road show to push back at them. He brought
with him the pictures that their unit photographer had taken, and films
of bodies, stacked like cordwood, being pushed into mass graves with
bulldozers. Those images are burned in my brain for all time. Beypond
the fact that it infuriated him that people were calling him and all of
the others in his division liars, he wanted to confront people with the
lengths that people will go to for hatred in the hopes that we could
prevent it from happening again. He did this well into his 80s, until
he couldn’t do it any longer. It saddens me to think that we are losing
the eyewitnesses to this horrible atrocity and it will be all the
harder to keep the evil that is the deniers from succeeding in substituting their lies for the truth.

  • VandeGraf

Met a German-American who joined the US Army when he was 18, to get citizenship (he said), He also said that the death camps weren’t German, they were run and operated by Jews and Jews did whatever killing there was. He said that the Germans were merely trying to keep the Jews safe from the war. We were at lunch and I was sickened. Never saw him again. There’s all sorts of denial.

    • Villago Delenda Est

One of the things the Nazis did was to make camps like Auschwitz “self-sealing”; the idea being that yup, Jews would do the actual dirty work (under the watchful eye of the SS) and would eventually be processed just as those they processed were. Because the collapse of the Third Reich overcame so many of the plans, the destruction of Auschwitz by the slave laborer successors of those who builty it was short circuited, as Allied forces (particularly the Red Army in the East) liberated the camps while they were in the process of being erased.

So that German-American was telling the truth…from a certain very jaundiced point of view.

      • Tansy Geek

Jaundiced to the point of needing a liver transplant.

      • The fact that the Nazis felt the need to hide that the Final Solution was actually mass murder shows that even they knew they were doing a Bad Bad Thing. I’ve read a theory that it was all a massive game of emotional blackmail on their own people: make them complicit in a crime so hideous that they would have no option but to fight to the death for Hitler, or else be hanged as war cirminals.

  • Me not sure

No proof? My Uncle Ikey was with Patton’s Third Army. They Liberated some camps. When he got home
he suffered from what would be called PTSD today. He broke down when he talked about it and ended up self-medicating with alcohol the rest of his life. Proof enough for me.

    • Unforgotten

I think it was in the UK, about a quarter of a century ago.
An American Holocaust denier sued a book company and a historian (or reporter, can’t recall) who had the gall to call him a fraud, to say that he knew as much about WWII history as an Amazonian Rain Forest indian.
To the courts they all went, and the Holocaust denier ended up proving that he didn’t even knew the basic blueprint of Auschwitz when a Historian/Architect (the guy did classes about how historical buildings had been constructed) was called and showed to the judge and the court why anyone who looked at the plan view of the buildings and the whole complex and still dared to deny the purposes of those constructions should not be taken seriously again, ever.
The denier got crunched in style!

      • Me not sure

I remember it. The historian was from Emory University, if memory serves.

      • MrBlobfish

        The Nazis kept good records

        • Villago Delenda Est

They did have a plan to destroy all the incriminating records, but as the war drew to a close, so many plans got lost in the confusion. To include all those receipts, train timetables, architectural drawings, work orders, Jew transfer from one camp to another orders, etc.

The fact that all this shit was so meticulously documented removed to any reasonable mind any doubt of what they were up to. As Eisenhower noted, in years in the future, attempts would be made to dismiss all the events that so many saw as “propaganda”. That’s what Holocaust denial is all about, to this day.

          • Unforgotten

Ever watched Fatherland (the HBO movie) or read the book?
I know that they went separate ways in the end (the book’s end, while very good, was the kind of ending no director would ever put in his movie), but that’s the whole premise of the story. Do it, and then destroy all proofs.

          • Villago Delenda Est

I found the book to have a far more satisfying, yet realistic, ending than the movie, and your comment about no director would use that ending is right on.

The needs of cinema vs. what you can do with books has undone more than one book adapted to a movie.

        • BackDoorMan

          … IBM helped.

      • Villago Delenda Est

Was that David Irving, the one who sued for being called a fraud? Because David Irving was and is a fraud.

        • Unforgotten

The case was Irving (himself!) vs Penguin Books and (Deborah) Lipstadt, but I made a mistake.
At the trial there was Sir Richard J. Evans (from Cambridge) who crunched every single work of Irving after doing some cross-reference (he proved that Irving used forged documents in his ‘works’), and there was Robert Jan van Pelt, an architectural historian, who proved without a doubt what was the sole purpose of building ‘those structures’ at Auschwitz-Birkenau in the way they were built (in a 770 pages report!)… and I mixed those two guys in one.
          My bad.

      • doktorzoom

That would be David Irving’s ill-considered libel suit against Deborah Lipstadt’s English publisher, Penguin. PBS’s Nova did a pretty decent reenactment of key moments from the transcript in a show called “The Holocaust on Trial”, and Hillary Swank is going to play Lipstadt in an upcoming film adaptation of Lipstadt’s book about the case.

I’m the proud owner of an autographed copy of the book that Irving sued over, Lipstadt’s 1994 Denying The Holocaust, which is a must-read for anyone interested in how Holocaust denial ever became a thing. Saw her speak in Tucson shortly after it came out, and she’s a heck of a historian.

The shirt that Cole or Stein, or whoever the fuck he is, is wearing in the picture…is that supposed to be a knockoff/parody of a Nazi concentration camp prison uniform? Because it sure looks like it.

I suggest that David Cole (if that is his real name) tour Germany these days… there are countless reminders of the Holocaust in monuments, museums, historical markers and plaques. Like this pic I took in Berlin last year, when entering the train station… (I found it both ironic and iconic)

Check yourself – try to remember the first time you saw the photos of holocaust victims, the piles of bodies, bodies being bulldozed into mass graves, etc. I remember the first time I saw them way back when, and I remember thinking …. ‘Why are they all emaciated, gassing shouldn’t produce emaciation’. I suppressed the thought. I’m pretty average, so I imagine a high percentage of the persons who saw the photos had the same thought. Once you understand why the bodies were emaciated, the holocaust is over. The photos were taken at Belsen after the war by the Brits, where a typhus epidemic had killed 35,000 in the last months of the war, 10,000 after liberation. The prisoners died of typhus. The Brits made a documentary movie explaining everything, but shelved it. You can now see it at PBS Frontline Memory of the Camps. We have been lied to for 50 years, by the media, by the USHMM, by the govt., and by academia. There was no holocaust, only a massive campaign of lies that continues to this day.
