Until rifling came about, muskets were not very accurate at all. Furthermore, the process of preparing the weapon for firing was rather intricate and complicated. Which is why you had these massed formations and lots and lots of drill to get down the entire process...because you had to have a lot of muskets going off in the same general direction and hope that the mass of lead moving away from your formation would do some damage to the other guy's formation across the field.

Around the time of the American Revolution, rifling started being used, which increased accuracy, but the loading of ammunition was still a serious pain. This is when you first saw non-formation tactics being used, as they were during many Revolutionary battles...which tended to drive the Redcoats nuts...it just wasn't proper!
