Dr. Ben Carson: Stop Demonizing Lady-Beater Ray Rice, He Just Needs Our Help

When you are trying to run for president without the benefit of current elected office or pre-existing celebrity, you have to make good use of the news cycle. Would-be Republican candidate Dr. Ben Carson did not hesitate to jump on the Ray Rice streetcar as it lumbered past on Monday but refused to pay the Ray-hating fare, insisting instead that the man who laid out his then-fiancée on the floor of an elevator simply needs our help .

Dr. Ben called in to Steve Malzberg's NewsMax show to make sure we know he's ashamed of us for "demonizing" poor Ray Rice. While "obviously anyone who would do anything like that" -- meaning knocking the mother of his child unconscious and dragging her limp body casually around the floor -- "needs some help," the good doctor wants to remind everyone that there were two people in that elevator.

[Let's] not all jump on the bandwagon of demonizing this guy. He obviously has some real problems, and his wife obviously knows that, since she subsequently married him. So they both need some help. And rather than jumping on a punitive bandwagon, let's just see if we can get some help for these people.

Host Steve Malzberg called it a "very interesting take," which is the closest anyone with a NewsMax show has ever come to calling a conservative's opinion completely insane. Malzberg quickly changed topics, allowing Dr. Ben to defend the soon-to-be-former owner of the Atlanta Hawks for wanting to whiten up his team's fan base.
