The loss of its magnetosphere didn't cause atmospheric thinning on Mars. Venus, like Mars, lacks a magnetosphere, yet it has retained a very thick and dense atmosphere. A big reason why Mars has such a thin atmosphere is because it has only a little over one third of the gravity of Earth, a consequence of being only half the diameter of our planet while also being composed of much less dense material.
