When our friends in the GOP make up their minds about something, by golly they stick to it! This is called "principles," and it is just the right thing to do. Recently, their number one most important principle has become "don't let Barack Obama get credit for raising the minimum wage," and so they have gone to work trying to persuade the American people that the minimum wage -- which is $7.25 in the United States of America -- is theft. Theft of the people's labor, right? Hahahahahahaha you are HILARIOUS. No no no, the minimum wage is theft from the owners, the job creators, the -- what the French should thank us for naming -- entrepreneurs. Also, theft from everyone who has to pay more than twenty-nine cents for a hamburger. Or a shirt.
So the GOP, in addition to writing off Mexicans, black people, gays, and the 51 percent of the population that looks really nice in that dress -- what, you can't even pay a compliment anymore? -- has decided they STILL have too many darned votes. So now they will write off everyone making less thanMelissaMarissa Mayer, and are going around having town halls where they get to tell minimum wage workers that they are too rich and they are taking money out of the mouths of poor CEOs and COOs and CFOs and ... um ... compensation boards? you know, all those guys, who can barely put Lamborghinis on their families. Good times, you guys. Let's watch the fun.
Rep. Doug Ross of Florida is one such fine fellow. Shaneeka Rainer is a young man who works at Arby's, and would like to kick Doug Ross's ass.
Here, let's steal the transcript from ThinkProgress:
RAINER: Would you support the Obama act of raising the federal minimum wage?
ROSS: No. [...] I think it would do more harm to our economy than anything. You work at Arby’s, the cost of products, the cost of services are going to go up. [...] If we are going to make it a living wage, who’s going to pay for it? Who’s going to pay for it?
AUDIENCEMEMBER: I will. I’ll pay 20 cents extra for a hamburger. [Applause]
RAINER: He said he’ll pay. So if he’ll pay, I’m going to work every day busting my butt. I want to know, would you take a walk in my shoes? Lay your tie and your suit down, just for a day, 24 hours, and take a walk in my shoes. The people that I work with, we’re keeping the economy floating and going in the cycle. But the people that hire, they’re just paying money, just throwing money. But I’m actually working every day. So why wouldn’t you support it?
ROSS: Because it’s not right. Economically, it’s not right. It does more harm to our economy. [...] If the government’s going to tell me how much I can get paid and when I can work and when I can’t work, then we have a serious problem in this country.
And their video.
Guys, you clearly have a real winner here, with telling the 1.7 million Americans making the federal minimum wage they don't need a raise -- as well as the 2.2 million who earn less.
But it's cool, because Doug Ross mowed lawns when he was 12, so he knows people who work at Arby's shouldn't make a "living wage." Because who is gonna pay for that? DOUG ROSS?
Fuck that noise. He got his.
