Liberals, we need to talk. On our pages, we deride Republicans for being anti-poor just because they are always trying to cut food stamps and deny people health care. But are they really that bad? Gov. Mary Fallin of Oklahoma is trying to show us that Republicans aren’t that bad. They’re worse. Per NewsOK:
Cities in Oklahoma are prohibited from establishing mandatory minimum wage or vacation and sick-day requirements under a bill that has been signed into law by Gov. Mary Fallin.
Wait. So in addition to merely opposing minimum wage hikes, Republicans in Oklahoma are actively ensuring that wages stay where they are, whether localities want to pay their workers more or not. Suck it, local control! Mary “Nannystate” Fallin is here to ram some big ol State Government down your throat! Because some freedom is okay (read: guns), but we don’t want to be as free as a place like North Korea or anything!
Why would such a bill even come before the governor?
Opponents … complain the bill specifically targets Oklahoma City, where an initiative is underway to establish a citywide minimum wage higher than the current federal minimum wage.
Haha, fuck you Oklahoma City! Holy Week is the perfect time for Republicans to remind us that Jesus hated the poor and wouldn’t be caught dead advocating for mercy and justice! Everyone knows he died to protect the rights of gun-owners, and so that his blood could be used to write in the Constitution that marriage is between a man and a woman! Learn your history, SHEEPLE.
So why is Gov. Fallin so against local governments? Per Tulsa World:
"However, most minimum wage workers are young, single people working part-time or entry level jobs," Fallin said. "Many are high school or college students living with their parents in middle-class families.
Is that true? According to a Pew Research study from 2012, 49.4% of minimum wage earners are 25 or older, so unlikely to be in high school or college. And 36% are not part-time workers, so we can assume those would be full-time workers. But those people don’t matter, because sometimes teenagers work at Burger King, and if there is one teenager from a middle-class family in all of Oklahoma who works for minimum wage, then it makes complete sense to not raise the minimum wage for, say, the 29% of minimum wage earners who are single parents.
They can suck it, because Mary Fallin doesn’t believe that they deserve to earn more than the minimum wage because she believes in local government just so long as local government don’t try to be too much like that Kenyan usurper in the White House. Because freedom can only extend so far, and reducing poverty through living wages in cities is just a bridge too far, and must be stopped.
Also, too, please ask your fast food employees not to get sick and sneeze on your food, because who needs sick leave anyway? Certainly not minimum wage employees! It's not like Oklahoma state employees get 15 days of sick leave per year or anything.
