Tyrant Obama Puts Dinesh D'Souza In Gulag For Crime Of Loving America Too Much

Dinesh D'Souza, the pseudointellectual troll who made a movie about the dishonesty and untrustworthiness of Barack Hussein Obama (do we even know who the man really is?) and the moral scold who had to resign a cushy job as president of a Christian college because he was boning a lady other than the one he was married to, has found himself in a spot of bother with John Law. Mr. D'Souza, it seems, was so very enthusiastic about a New York candidate for U.S. Senate that, frustrated that federal law only allowed him to give $5000 to senatorial candidate Wendy Long, he went out and got other people to donate to her too, and then he reimbursed them for the donations, to the tune of $20,000. The only teensy little problem with his brainstorm is that it's kind of totally not legal, probably because Barack Obama is motivated by Kenyan, anticolonialist rage. 

Is the conservasphere already rolling out the line that he is being punished for criticizing Obama? You bet! 

The announcement from the office of U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara specifies that D'Souza is charged with

"violating the federal campaign finance laws by making illegal contributions to a United States Senate campaign in the names of others and causing false statements to be made to the Federal Election Commission in connection with those contributions.”

The  New York Times  diligently notes that the indictment does not name the candidate that D'Souza raised straw donations for, but that D'Souza's legal donation of $5000 went only to one candidate, Wendy Long, who ran unsuccessfully against incumbent Kirsten Gillibrand. We are going to guess that the bogus donations probably did not end up going to Elizabeth Warren. We're open to being surprised, of course.

D'Souza's attorney, Benjamin Brafman, issued a statement making absolutely clear that it was all a huge misunderstanding. probably because the higher principle involved -- D'Souza really, really wanted Long to win -- outweighed the trivialities of federal law:

“Mr. D’Souza did not act with any corrupt or criminal intent whatsoever ... He and the candidate have been friends since their college days, and at most, this was an act of misguided friendship by D’Souza.”

Well, then. They were pals from way back. That seems like a perfectly good reason to ignore piddling little federal campaign regulations against straw campaign donations, which D'Souza, understandably enough, probably assumed had been overturned by the Citizens United decision.

D'Souza, of course, is manning up like you'd expect from a member of the Party of Personal Responsibility. Yesterday, he played a cute little game on the Tweetosphere, first sending out a link to a story about an unrelated IRS investigation of a rightwing group, with the message:

IRS targets Hollywood Conservatives--wasn't this supposed to stop?

And then an hour later, he tweeted a link to a story that actually is about him:

Hahaha, "Hollywood Reporter." That IS amusing! Except that the story bends over to present D'Souza sympathetically, quoting the producer of D'Souza's dumb Obama documentary, Gerald Molen, going on at length about how poor Dinesh D'Souza is being railroaded because he's a conservative:

"In America, we have a long tradition of not doing what is commonly done in too many other countries -- criminalizing dissent through the selective enforcement of the law," Molen tells THR. 

D'Souza first learned he was being investigated in the middle of 2013, several months after 2016 had earned $33 million at the box office and become the second-most-popular political documentary in U.S. history. The film included an interview with Obama's half-brother, George Obama, who was mildly critical of the president.

Molen says D'Souza is being singled out for "an alleged minor violation" in the same way the IRS reportedly targeted conservative Tea Party groups for retribution. "In light of the recent events and the way the IRS has been used to stifle dissent, this arrest should send shivers down the spines of all freedom-loving Americans," Molen says.

Poor, oppressed Dinesh D'Souza. Big Hollywood stars probably gets all their pals to make straw donations three times a week, but do you ever hear about that? The article closes with one more warning from Molen about how the tyrant Obama will now silence his critics by throwing them in the gulag:

"When American citizens begin to suspect that people are being arrested for alleged minor violations because of their vocal dissent against their elected representatives or rulers, it breeds disrespect and contempt for the law and suspicion of those officials. … If this unfortunate action against Dinesh is intended to deter the release of his upcoming film, America, that effort will fail."

That's some awesome Personal Responsibility right there, isn't it?

And just to up the ante a little, we get this from The Daily Caller's Eric Owens:

“2016: Obama’s America” was a surprise box-office smash, raking in $33 million in revenue.

The documentary is currently the second-most-popular political documentary in American history behind “Farenheit 9/11,” a 2004 movie by leftist documentarian Michael Moore which thrashes the foreign policy of Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush.

Bush administration officials never indicted Moore.

We are going to go way out on a limb here and point out that it's entirely possible that Michael Moore didn't arrange for friends to make illegal campaign donations. We don't know for sure that he didn't, but that's our working theory.

And so, let us all be thankful that today, we are not Dinesh D'Souza, Free Speech Hero.
