Wisconsin Golf Course Gets Lots Of Free Publicity, Death Threats, With Awesome 9/11 Special

 
 A Verona, Wisconsin, golf course has apologized for its well-thought-out 9/11 commemoration, an ad that offered to remember the 12th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon with a golf discount:

"9 holes with cart for only $9.11 per person or 18 holes with cart for only 19.11. 9/11/13 Only!"

TOO SOON, Tumbledown Trails Golf Course, TOO SOON!!! Don't you know that the only proper way to remember 9/11 is with bad art* or by condemning the terrible insensitivity of Barack Obama for visiting one of the three places where the planes crashed, but not the other two?

 
 After the ad ran Monday in the Wisconsin State Journal, the golf course's MyFace page featured a series of increasingly freaked-out posts as the internet swung into Full 9/11 Outrage Mode. First, there was an apology and a promise that employees would honor the special price, but would also "donate the $ difference between our normal rate and the previous price for the day to the 9/11 Memorial." Angry commenters remained angry.

 Then, an attempt at showing that they're really nice civic-minded folks:

We are a family owned business & proudly support all local charities and have always gave 20% off everyday to all Police, Fire, Emergency, Military, etc. Please accept our apology.

And by now, although some people were accepting the apology, the Angry Internet Mob was Very Offended, and so of course, the golf course owner started receiving death threats and threats to burn down golf course buildings. Makes you proud to be an American, doesn't it?

We aren't at all sure the internet shitstorm will be eased by the golf course's final message of the day:

Please stay tuned to see if we will be open on Weds 9/11.

We are now worried about what people will do/say to our staff & do not want anything to happen or get out of control.

Sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused anyone.

No telling yet whether this will all end with a tearful town meeting, a boycott, a lynching, or maybe a yawn and then some more griping about the Onion's fake 9/11 ad, because we must all be eternally worried about the feelings of the victims, who are us, because we saw it all on teevee, so we were there. And in a day or so, we can send a million angry tweets to someone who's been seen kicking a puppy on YouTube.
