Strictly speaking, that's not Calvinism. Calvinism is much worse: you are selected by God ahead of time for either Heaven or Hell. Nothing you can do in your life will have any effect on your eventual outcome, but you should still try to be good, just because.

I don't find it necessarily "depressing". This is what unions are for. If all we've got left are a thin layer of high-end design and sales and marketing jobs, and a whole lot of service jobs, then the service jobs need to be paid better.

This isn't charity, it's rudimentary macroeconomics. There has to be massive consumer spending to fuel the economy. Most of it has to come from tens of millions of ordinary people. How the fuck could the Waltons spend the hundreds of billions per year that would be their share of the GDP? Shit just isn't that expensive.

The only thing that can fuel the economy is spending by regular folks. And to do that, they have to have livable incomes.

But I repeat myself.
