Thomas Sowell: Dead Kid, Gun, George Zimmerman’s Confession 'Insufficient Evidence' To Prosecute George Zimmerman
With his B.A. from Harvard, M.A. from Columbia, and Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago, Thomas Sowell might just be the best-educated* dimwit in America. How else are we to explain his latest column , the thrust of which is: George Zimmerman should never have been tried for killing Trayvon Martin, oh and also Obama is a lawless usurper, because why not throw that in there? Actually, that last bit provides a clue to an alternative explanation for this column’s existence that doesn't rely on Thomas Sowell's astonishingly stupidity: Thomas Sowell earns a good living by expounding silly, unsupportable, poorly conceived “ideas” that appeal to lunatic right-wingers and make everyone else’s heads explode. Are there any other possibilities?
Before you answer, let’s just delve into this… thing Sowell has written:
“Legally speaking, Zimmerman has won his freedom. But he can still be sued in a civil case, and he will probably never be safe to live his life in peace, as he could have before this case made him the focus of national attention and orchestrated hate.”
Hmm, we seem to recall that the ENTIRE REASON why this case attracted national attention in the first place was that the local DA didn’t want to bring charges DESPITE THE FACT THAT SOMEBODY DIED AND IT WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT. Had the DA charged Zimmerman, none of us would have had any idea that a Florida man who killed an unarmed teenager had just been acquitted of murder and manslaughter, and he’d be “safe to live his life in peace,” right? So isn’t Thomas Sowell arguing for the very course of action that has made Zimmerman a “focus of national attention and orchestrated hate?” Moving on…
“People who have increasingly asked, during the lawlessness of the Obama administration, “Is this still America?” may feel some measure of relief.”
It would be nice if Sowell provided some examples of Obama’s lawlessness, like for example how he refused to defend DOMA and is selectively enforcing immigration law, but no, all we get is this assertion. The closest Sowell comes to substantiating this oft-repeated claim is:
“After the local police in Florida found insufficient evidence to ask for Zimmerman to be prosecuted, the Obama administration sent Justice Department investigators to Sanford, Fla., and also used the taxpayers’ money to finance local activists who agitated for Zimmerman to be arrested.”
Oh yes, the now-popular claim that the Justice Department fomented a race war in Florida that has been thoroughly debunked by TheFuckingBlaze for chrissake. (You know WHO ELSE debunked it? Oh whatever.) And finally:
“But the very fact that this case was brought in the first place, in an absence of serious evidence — which became ever more painfully obvious as the prosecution strained to try to come up with anything worthy of a murder trial — will be of limited encouragement as to how long this will remain America.”
Right, the absence of serious evidence, aside from THE DEAD KID, THE GUN USED TO KILL HIM, AND THE TRIGGER MAN'S CONFESSION.
*Yes, an econ degree from UChicago is basically just a professional certification in dreaming up reasons why rich people should have all the money, but the point stands.
Consequences are Un-American. Did Cheney face consequences? Did Bush? Did Condeleeeza? Do editorialists face consequences for being horribly, horribly wrong all the time?
This suppository is given weekly space in my local fishwrap; he has never seen a white man beating / gunning down a black man that he was willing to defend. The Cons still won't invite him to their parties.
