San Diego Diocese: Domestic Violence Victims Attract Wrong Kind Of People To Parent-Teacher Night
Longtime readers of our mommyblog/warblog/blawg will know that we have given some NiceTime love to NewPope, much to the chagrin of you people. Here's a little PSA to remind you that our love for NewPope, however strong and long, does not extend to loving the various dioceses because seriously, fuck a lot of those guys. Exhibit 1: San Diego, which just straight-out fired a teacher because she was the VICTIM of domestic violence:
Second-grade teacher Carie Charlesworth is out of a job, but not for anything she did in the classroom. Her school district considers her a liability and too unsafe to have around following a domestic violence dispute that happened earlier this year.
A letter sent to Charlesworth said that school officials are concerned about her ex-husband's "threatening and menacing behavior," and as a result they "cannot allow" her to continue teaching at the Holy Trinity School.
This is the very definition of NOTNiceTime, the opposite of NiceTime, the Lex Luthor to NiceTime's Superman. Firing someone because someone else either wants to, or has, or both, beaten the shit out of them does not really help that person oh no it does not! Studies show that not having a job post-beating is extra-terrible. (We made up that part about studies, but we're pretty sure our conclusion is solid). And lest someone want to have a contrarian smart take on this whole thing and speculate that dude's crimes were minor, he went to jail on two felony charges so shut up, you.
Does this get worse for this lady? Does the San Diego Diocese do something more terrible? HAHA of course they do!
Three months later, another letter arrived in the mail delivering a crushing blow. Charlesworth was fired for good, and after 14 years in the district not allowed to teach at any other Diocesan school.
The letter stated:
"We know from the most recent incident involving you and Mrs. Wright (the principal) while you were still physically at Holy Trinity School, that the temporary restraining order in effect were not a deterrent to him. Although we understand he is current [sic] incarcerated, we have no way of knowing how long or short a time he will actually serve and we understand from court files that he may be released as early as next fall. In the interest of the safety of the students, faculty and parents at Holy Trinity School, we simply cannot allow you to return to work there, or, unfortunately, at any other school in the Diocese."
Hey lady! Your husband is in jail for beating you, but we don't know how long he will be in jail for beating you, so we're going to have to ensure you never teach anywhere in our little Catholic fiefdom forever and ever, amen. You know, for the kids.
More insult to injury can be found in the letter when it explains TO THE LADY exactly how violent her husband is and that he has been super violent for 20 years even before he was being violent to her! Is there a word for mansplaining, but that only applies to a church official and is only about explaining to a victim that the perpetrator is real real bad because she probably did not know? Because we really need that word.
All is not lost, however, as the letter also tells Ms. Charlesworth that although she can never work in the Diocese again because her husband is a terrible violent felon TO HER but that is really HER fault because safety, it also provides the endless succor and comfort of the church by telling her that they will continue to pray for her. We are sure Ms. Charlesworth will enjoy dining on those delicious prayers and having a roof over her head comprised of the finest, warmest prayers.
Dear San Diego Diocese: Go fuck yourself. Have a blessed day! Love, yr Wonkette.
