So remember that dumb thing about Rick Santorum speaking/not speaking to some high school students about “leadership?” Well, he did speak Wednesday at Grosse Pointe South High School and got paid $18,000 for it. That means Santorum made in two hours 38% of the median annual salary of South teachers. And that’s a lesson, kids. The marketplace is full of irrational actors who will complain about the cost of educating their children into productive adults while throwing gobs of money at stupid crap. Like a Rick Santorum speech on leadership.
Since Grosse Pointe South is yr Wonket’s alma mater, he weaseled a media credential and watched Rick Santorum spread his special brand of leadership across the gymnasium where yr Wonket played floor hockey and volleyball back when Kurt Cobain was alive.
Here are some of the completely non-political “leadership” things Santorum shared with the children of a community that Jack Kerouac (former resident!) said lacked tragedy .
“Are we better off as a society, are we truly compassionate, by caring for those who are poor and providing things for them. Or are we really compassionate if we say we believe in the dignity of every human life to rise and succeed and are willing to create ladders of success and tolerate failure?”
“Contrary to some of his speeches, I don’t think the president is doing anything to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.”
“We’re not doing non-radical Muslims any favor by not addressing the issue of who these people are who want to harm us and want to conquer us in some way. And so that’s what I’ve tried to do and what I did over the course of my campaign is and when I was in Congress, and I can mention a couple bills I tried to pass in particular about Iran, which I think is public enemy number one—a radical Islamic regime—that controls huge amounts of energy resources.”
“The problem we have now is we have a press and a president that refuses to identify the truth, which is what is motivating people to do this. I’ll give you an example, the Fort Hood shooting. Remember Nidal Hasan went into Fort Hood with a weapon and shot a bunch of people, yelling Allah Akbar! There was all sorts of information about communication with radical Islamic groups.* Read the report from this administration about that incident. It was called a workplace shooting, not one single mention of the word Islam, Muslim, jihad, or anything. Scrubbed.”
“You’ve been lied to. You’ve been lied to by a culture that tells you it’s all about you. That’s what the culture says, that it’s all about you. I think that’s, umm, I’ve shared this with a group before about how America has changed over the last 50 years. Did you know up until the mid-1950s, there was no word teenager? It didn’t exist. You were a child or you were an adult.”
“America is going to be energy independent. We have enough gas in that shale rock. We have enough oil in that shale rock. We have other technologies that are coming on line that will be there for your generation and in the future. And we’re going to have a robust energy economy.”
“Tip O’Neil and Ronald Reagan had the same basic vision for America. I don’t think that’s the case anymore. I think there are fundamentally different visions.”
Leadership!
* Per Wikipedia , citing the FBI: According to a November 11 press release, after preliminary examination of Hasan’s computers and internet activity, they had found no information to indicate he had any co-conspirators or was part of a broader terrorist plot, stressing the "early stages" of the review. They said no e-mail communications with outside facilitators or known terrorists were found.”
Anyone notice the YAF crap behind Ricky? Young wingnuts of America, bringing frothy loons like Santorum, Malkin, and (shudder) Coulter to college campuses -- and now they're polluting high schools. Would be interesting to know who bankrolls these assholes, but for some reason we still allow political actors to hide behind the 501(c) "charitable" mask.
This follower of Jesus doesn't really want to live his life per Jesus' teachings. Not even some of them.
