California's New Democratic Supermajority Promises It Will Do 'Nothing'
Is something broken in California? Anything? Well, it is probably because of the 1978 passage of Proposition 13, which requires a 2/3 majority vote in the legislature to raise taxes, and capped all property taxes at a ridiculously low base level . The caps on property taxes even apply to income properties and commercial holdings , due to some loophole that no one seems very interested in closing.
But it’s ok! you can breathe a sigh of relief because THANK GOD, Democrats in California finally have a supermajority so they can do things that they have really WANTED to do but that the Republicans blocked. So what will they use this power for? Will they close the loophole on commercial property taxes? Will they try to pass universal health care? No, of course not, there will be a backlash if they do things that they were elected to do, so to stay on the safe side they will do “nothing.” Literally, this is their plan — to do nothing. They couldn't do anything before because the GOP blocked every effort and now that the GOP isn't blocking their efforts, they'll just go ahead and stand in their own way THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
When Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles) was asked what he intended to do with his caucus' new power, he responded with one word: Nothing.

Liberals, however, sense a mandate in the November election results.
They cited record turnout among Latino, Asian and African American voters, who supported Brown's tax-hike measure, Proposition 30, in large numbers, according to exit poll data. Those voters also said by a 2-1 margin that they believed government should be doing more to solve the nation's problems.
Sure, LA Times, it is only "liberals" who want a functioning system of public higher education and want the government to solve problems. Not the voters who VOTED for these people who are now pledging to do "nothing," just "liberals."
