You know what's embarrassing about all of this, for the GOP? If the right wing really wanted to sound the "OMG OBAMA IS BLACKCK" dogwhistle just in time for the debate, they really circulated this (six-year-old, thoroughly covered) video way too late to have any impact, by deciding to make this a big deal on late evening, Debate Eve.
Romney doesn't have enough time to formulate a coherent attack over this, so either he ignores it entirely, in which case its only purpose is to demonstrate the hamfisted efforts the right is going to in order to stoke racial wedge politics this time around, or he follows their lead and launches an ill-considered attack without all that much prep work behind it, in which case, Scott Brown's Indian Panic really does become prologue for the Presidential debates, also to Romney's detriment.
The thing to remember -and at least the activist/"news" wing of the GOP has clearly long forgotten this- is that while a lot of middle-class whites are receptive to racialized messaging, it tends to only be insofar as they are also granted deniability; if the message is simply OBAMA IS BLACK AND HAS THOUGHTS ABOUT BLACK AMERICA AND DID WE MENTION THAT HE'S BLACKC???!! -which is really all this line of argument consists of thus far- then you're really gunning for 27% of the vote at that point.
If they had another day or two to marinate the argument, throw out some rationalizations, and generally desensitize white voters to the bald racism behind this effort, they might actually have had an effect, but 24 hours before the debate? Way the fuck too soon to have the impact they want. This is Backwards B territory, frankly.

Disagree, and here's why:
A few commentators on the left have noted, and I'm sure Republican strategists are aware as well, that the two dominant anti-Obama narratives- that he is a) an empty suit in over his head; and b)a sinister Antichrist figure deliberately destroying America- are contradictory and mutually exclusive. Pivoting from one to the other is awkward and offers a pretty obvious vulnerability.
Now, for the past week, the Romney campaign has been focused on attacking Obama on competancy grounds, over Libya, and it's hard to see them making that choice knowing that something like this was upcoming.
No, what I think happened is that someone pointed Drudge to this old video (which has been on Youtube LITERALLY this entire time), and he more or less immediately started to tease it, deciding on a late release in order to give him enough time to actually come up with a lede based on it. Everything about this seems way too half-cocked and out-of-step with the campaign to suggest that there was any actual coordination happening. Not to mention the fact that Romney's campaign leaks more than a sieve, so it's hard to see this move catching anyone by surprise like it has.
What's particularly amusing to me is the way that Fucker is spinning it as allegedly newsworthy, in that he's pointing out that the speech was given without a prompter and this explains why there are some deviations from the prepared remarks (actually, that attempt at forming a causative link is bullshit, Obama often deviates from prepared remarks even when using a prompter, because he keeps editing the speeches he co-writes even after the prepared remarks go out to the media).
In other words, he's stomping on his, and the rest of the right's, carefully cultivated myth of Obama being dependent on prompters.

Is an interesting observation, and probably pertinent to all those people who say things like, "I just don't like him", or a damn lot of them, anyway. If you said, "You mean because he's black?", they'd be all, "No! God, no!", appalled and highly indignant, because somehow, even they don't realize that that's why.*

Honestly, I can't really say it's really my own observation; it's just a reformulation, for clarity, of Lee Attwater's famous Southern Strategy admission. The "abstraction" from the overt white supremacism of the mid-20th is very much about giving middle-class whites "permission" to support the same racist agenda into the Civil Rights era, by making the racist intent of those policy positions more and more deniable.
Why do they think this stuff will work in 2012, when it didn't work in 2008? Obama is as black today as he was then. Ha — the DailyCaller page with the video of the whole speech cites a transcript released to the press — so the speech that Senator Obama made public because he was a public figure rather than some sort of underground agitator like the DC wants to portray him was the source of the quotes.
And the other theory of why they got the quote wrong — that the quote on Drudge was bullshit — turns out to be the right guess. The quote about how Obama wanted more of "our people" to do the work in New Orleans, alleging that it's somehow racist — he actually said "our young people," as in America's underprivileged and underemployed youth. So — elision and deliberate misinterpretation totally change the meaning.

DC has the full video of Obama's speech here. I'm not quite sure what they found to be incriminating or scandalous — I'd say that parts of it were not completely inspiring, and parts of it were too religious for my taste, but on the whole it had the proper amount of righteous indignation, hope in human potential, moral philosophical underpinnings and clear policy goals that made me want to stand up and cheer.

But, yeah, you're right, it is something everyone does to some degree or another. At the same time, the most discussed, and frankly most interesting examples typically come from people with mixed backgrounds or in mixed societies. Especially when we're talking about not just linguistic code-switching, but social and behavioral code-switching as well. I honestly think that the way we adapt to our social surroundings is generally really cool.

What I'd like to see is a montage of various politicians of different ethnicities slipping into, or attempting to slip into "black" cadence.
