Dinesh is On a BoatSay, right-wing blogosphere, what is the unreliable Lamesteam Media covering up now? Oh, it is ignoring the unprecedented success of 2016: Obama’s America, a low-budget documentary that has been relentlessly promoted on Fox News? Gosh, it is indeed surprising that, in a news cycle dominated by the Republican Convention and a hurricane, insufficient attention was paid to a documentary which, as a butthurt editorial in Investor’s Business Daily noted, “grossed $6.5 million…putting in the top 10 [sic]” in its first weekend of wide release. (“In the top 10” sounds far more impressive than seventh nationwide on an “awful late-August weekend” for national box-office, of course — though that is still pretty good for a “documentary.”)

Still, the editorial doggedly insists that the lack of widespread reporting on this stunningly mild success is evidence of perfidy:

But aside from a few grudging news stories about the weekend box office take and a smattering of predictably critical reviews, the media are largely turning a studied blind eye to the film.

No wonder, since the success of “2016” exposes several inconvenient truths about President Obama, as well as the media’s dereliction of duty in vetting him four years ago.

Haha, “inconvenient truths!” — we see what they did there!

And what are these shocking revelations that were never mentioned by anyone during the 2008 campaign? We wonder if anyone has looked into those?

We don’t even know what grades Obama got in college, since he guards his transcripts more carefully than he does national security secrets. Obama has also downplayed his relationships with radical leftists. Terrorist Bill Ayers? Barely knew the man. America-hating Rev. Jeremiah Wright? Never heard any of his diatribes in the 20 years attending that church.

We are beginning to think they may have a point — it probably is newsworthy that a film presenting those tired old claims as shocking revelations is somehow making more money than The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure, with its maybe-kinda-racist fish puppet that people might be offended with if anyone saw the movie, which no one has.

Unworthy of witty comment, like the film itself. The end.

  • I wish I had a career manager as clever as FOX News, gussying up my movies to sound like must-see documentaries for right wing addleheads.

Of course, I'd have to give my movie away to theaters that could accomodate Hoverounds, but what the hey…

    • Grokenstein

"I wish I had a career manager as clever as FOX News, gussying up two-hour-long negative late-campaign ads to sound like must-see documentaries"

Touched that up a little bit.

      • Everybody's a critic. I like to think of those as some of my finest work!

  • Tundra Grifter

One of the crazed right wing nutz over at Amazon raved that "2016" is the second highest grossing political documentary in America.

We watched "Kicking and Screaming" over the weekend, so I remember the other name for "second place." It's "Loser."

"2016" grossed $1,627 per theatre (the only number that matters). So, over 3 days it grossed some $550 per theatre per day. At $7 a ticket, that's less than 80 people. Say it showed 3 times a day? Thirty people per showing? The size of my high school senior class.

    • SexySmurf

Really? What's the highest grossing political documentary of all time, and how did that work out for John Kerry?

      • Fahrenheit 911 and…

        Oh. You have a point.

    • Imma wager about half those 30 folks were married men looking for a quickie from a date and needed an empty theatre.

      • prommie

        Nice head, you mean?

        • I deny rumours that I've purchased an entire theatre Thursday night.

          • Fare la Volpe

True story: I got my very first blowjob in the front row of a movie theater. Two months later I was working at that very theater and my job was to go into each room and make sure people weren't having sex during the shows.

    • Crank_Tango

Where the hell did you go to school? There were almost 30 people in my homeroom…

      • I think there were around 1,627 people in my graduating class.

      • Christ, that was the men's room smoking line in mine

      • Tundra Grifter

My first semester at the University of Miami, there were more students in the Introduction to Western Civilization class than there were kids in my entire high school.

Twice as many girls went to UofM as there were people in my hometown.

      • viennawoods13

I started teaching a homeroom of 34 last Tuesday.

    • Doktor Zoom

To be "fair," the $1627 / screen is last weekend's take; the figures form the butthurt editorial are correct for the movie's first wide-release weekend, August 24-27, when it was pulling $5,966 / screen. And as I note, that was a really slow weekend with very weak new releases.

      • How does all that play out in real dollars, tho? For example, this film took in $26.2 million, and "Inconvenient Truth" took in $24 million, but "Truth" is more than five year old, so we'd have to adjust for inflation (let's call it 2% per annum) which comfortably beats D'nesh like a rented mule.

    • finallyhappy

$7 – where can I see a movie for $7?? Not first run/ not even seniors. So I would say fewer people saw it.

      • Tundra Grifter

I would tend to agree with you. Just trying to use conservative figures. When we have the truth on our side we don't need to exaggerate.

Heck, out in the stix pix tix are probably not more than $6 or $7, anyways…

    • Antispandex

It's easy to make it to number 7, when the other ten movies on the list suck. Just sayin'. I would rather watch a Jennifer Aniston film festival while sitting on a boiling cactus, myself.

You have to turn to Dorothy Parker to find the right description of the acting talent of la Aniston, that thing about the gamut from A to B.

The film also reveals Barack Obama's shocking history of having fathered black babies! (And the related news that those babies have mysteriously turned into lovely young women. How did they do it?)

When the movie was filmed in Detroit, the bad guys were supposed to be the Chinese (the movie was filmed almost two years ago). I guess the producers decided that would be a bad idea and decided to make the bad guys the North Koreans.

One would think the highly refined and not at all murderous stewardship of Indian people by their natural European betters would have gotten more fans.

      • As a Catholic of Goan descent, he identifies more strongly with the Portuguese colonists who controlled that island for hundreds of years and who comprise some of his ancestry. He's very angry about Portugal's being displaced as a world power, and Goa becoming part of India. That's my theory. Maybe I'll write a book about it and make a film.

        • JohnnyQuick

Wow, he's angry about something that happened in about 1500?

Yeah, I guessed that he had some Portuguese connection considering I knew about Goa, and he has that John Phillips Sousa name. He still seems to have a crazy powerful case of Uncle Tom-ism. It's one thing to suck up to the people in power in America, yet another to create a big thesis attacking all non-Europeans when you yourself are non-European.

Looks like I also missed an opportunity at my empty chair submission – that had – Hell, still has – hilarity written all over it.

Oh, and, yes [insert obligatory overblown stage sigh and pearl-clutching (may I borrow sumbuddy's pearls a moment?)] it is of course a tragedy of nothing less than epic proportions that this monumental exposé depicting our blah president's true sinister intentions has gained so resoundingly meager a response in both patronage and media coverage. OK, no, it really isn't any form of tragedy whatsoever – THIS IS YOUR FUCKING FREE MARKET, BABY; CHEW ON THAT YOU RACIST BASTERDS!

    • AbandonHope_

You got it all wrong. It's simple: if a liberal fails, it's the free market. If a conservative succeeds, it's the free market. If either of the opposites happen, it's a SOCIALIST COMMUNIST FASCIST NAZITASTIC CONSPIRACY.

      • Oh, right. I stand corrected and humbled. Re-assimilating after vaca is hellish – one loses touch with all such universal rules of the political universe.

[hollars obnoxiously down hall at Mrs OWL who is still unpacking] "Do I have any of that last bottle of Jameson left over from vacation …?"

  • How does someone whose country of origin and adopted country were both former colonies end up being anti anti-colonialism?

    • That he has a Portu'gee last name & was Catholic until he became an evangelical might indicate that his ancestors were collaborators w/ their conquerors, & that one of his female ancestors was probably a hoor for some Portuguese colonist.

    • BoroPrimorac

Anti-colonialism is just code for: Obama is itching to get back at whites for all their crimes against the browns. For four years republicans have been trying to get a majority of whites to believe this.

  • Steverino247

    Niche market, for sure.

  • One_Man_Band

This weekend I saw Miike's remake of Hara-Kiri, which was great. It involves a hard-working family that can't afford health care, and when one of them goes to visit the powerful folks in the fancy house to ask for some help, they make him disembowel himself with a stick and then have a good laugh.

Might as well be set in America in 2012, instead of Japan in the 1600s.

  • mavenmaven

Biggest hit for that demographic since "Birth of a Nation"…

  • qwerty42

The transcripts … wtf? This is the kind of stuff that gets palmed off as "vetting" by these simpletons?

    • Yes, and the transcripts that exactly no presidential candidate has submitted are EXACTLY the same as the tax returns very recent president has submitted.

  • I had a conversation with a wingnut who urged me repeatedly to see this steaming character assassination turd. I finally agreed if she would see An Inconvenient Truth. She replied that this was exactly what was wrong with liberals–always trying to shove radical propaganda down people's throats.

    You can't fix stupid.

  • barto

Personally, I'm waiting for the prequel, "1964: Obama's Kenya". Guaranteed blockbuster.

  • DocChaos

So far Obama 2016 has done about a quarter of the box office of Fahrenheit 9/11, which as we know, completely destroyed Bush's chances at a second term.

  • Grokenstein

I remember some clown at IMDb crowing that because Pixar's "Cars" took in more money than "An Inconvenient Truth," it stood to reason that SHUT UP, HIPPIES. Maybe D'nesh D'umbass should've hooked up with the company that made "The Lion of Judah" (see Wikipedia etc) to make "Mighty Morphin' Mitt and the Migrant Magic Underpants Gnomes" instead.

    • The Lion of Judah
      Haile Selassie I libel!!

  • HelmutNewton

I seem to recall a debate D'Souza had with Hitchens on religion. Needless to say, Hitch demolished him, but D'Souza was too dumb to realize he'd been destroyed.

  • rickmaci

F*ing D'Souza is just jelly because he came here for college from India, didn't want to go back to that hell hole so he overstayed his visa and can never be POTUS because his parents didn't have the foresight when he was born to plant a forged birth certificate and news announcement in Hawaii.

  • AbandonHope_

I'm pretty sure Oogieloves is a more shocking tell-all documentary about Obama than Obama 2016 is.

  • AbandonHope_

Shit, I think I have that same shirt he's wearing.

    Well, time to burn it.

  • this was playing at our local independent cinema this weekend (libtard north side of bamz' hometown. go figure).

we went to the bar with everyone else.

  • usuhname

You'd think they'd of come up with at least one pseudo-bombshell, or atleast had the good sense to make some new stuff up. I mean, even the target-audience could of just (and probably did) watch Fox News for the last four years and already know the entire film "plot".

  • a_pink_poodle

I have no idea what my grades were but I'm pretty sure they were really bad.

To put this in perspective, Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 took in $23.9 million on its opening weekend in the US and Canada. Two million copies were sold on dvd the day it was released.

  • its maybe-kinda-racist fish puppet

But really, enough about Dinesh D'souza now.

  • eaglewon

Dsouza looks like a three toed sloth with glasses.

  • AddHomonym

Google news search for the #6 movie The Odd Life of Timothy Green: 10,400 hits. For the wingnut movie? 27,600. Case dismissed, next case.

  • azeyote

2016 obamas america ? — jeb bush weeps.

  • Lazy Media

Hey, this "movie" has made $26 million so far. That makes it the 68th highest-grossing movie of 2012. Sixty-eight! Is there any question that the MSM has denied Dinesh D'Souza $1 million to keep him from sexy fun times?

  • docterry6973

I am sure that every ticket was sold to an undecided voter who now supports Romney. So it was money well-earned.

  • Robman2

D'Sousa, born into wealth, Dad was a Johnson and Johnson exec in India.

My take, Didousch, found out two things, he wields the Indian penchant for caste alignment as a result of NOT being a child with an MIA dad, and, his extra darkling looks, made him have to unbutt hurt with the whites he ended up going to school with in Nazi occupied (NO MLK DAY HERE) state of AZ.

Found out by high school, pandering to the right wing made him acceptable, 50 shades of darkness, and his cast borne right wing ethos, was shepherded into Stanford (no public funds or scholarships for merit, right wing boot camp school) then onto Heritage, Reagan's minions and eventually, funded by right wing darling because HE IS some sort of blend on the color wheel.

THAT is another form of affirmative action, like Paul Rayn, born into it, playing that struggles were normative.

He's jealous of Barack, and the self assured form of personal loathing was apparent when he never acknowledged even one point of fact on Maher.

  • Inventing Bullshit Drably.

  • Negropolis

Yeah, but doesn't Oogieloves hav Toni Braxton in it? How can you go wrong with Toni Braxton?

  • grace_nearing

As with Truman Capote's voiceover in "A Thanksgiving to Remember," did the audio guys have to tweak the tape speed to get Dinesh's voice down from the castrato range?

  • TribecaMike

The MSM claiming Obama’s America is a hit is on a par with the oft-repeated MSM cliche "Mormonism is the fastest growing religion." Both claims are BS, but consulting Dr. Google is tough on the fingertips.
