Liberal Media Cover-Up: D’Souza’s Obama-Bashing Movie Was Mildly Successful On Slow Weekend

  Wingnuts Outraged

Dinesh is On a BoatSay, right-wing blogosphere, what is the unreliable Lamesteam Media covering up now? Oh, it is ignoring the unprecedented success of 2016: Obama’s America, a low-budget documentary that has been relentlessly promoted on Fox News? Gosh, it is indeed surprising that, in a news cycle dominated by the Republican Convention and a hurricane, insufficient attention was paid to a documentary which, as a butthurt editorial in Investor’s Business Daily noted, “grossed $6.5 million…putting in the top 10 [sic]” in its first weekend of wide release. (“In the top 10″ sounds far more impressive than seventh nationwide on an “awful late-August weekend” for national box-office, of course — though that is still pretty good for a “documentary.”)

Still, the editorial doggedly insists that the lack of widespread reporting on this stunningly mild success is evidence of perfidy:

But aside from a few grudging news stories about the weekend box office take and a smattering of predictably critical reviews, the media are largely turning a studied blind eye to the film.

No wonder, since the success of “2016″ exposes several inconvenient truths about President Obama, as well as the media’s dereliction of duty in vetting him four years ago.

Haha, “inconvenient truths!” — we see what they did there!

And what are these shocking revelations that were never mentioned by anyone during the 2008 campaign? We wonder if anyone has looked into those?

We don’t even know what grades Obama got in college, since he guards his transcripts more carefully than he does national security secrets. Obama has also downplayed his relationships with radical leftists. Terrorist Bill Ayers? Barely knew the man. America-hating Rev. Jeremiah Wright? Never heard any of his diatribes in the 20 years attending that church.

We are beginning to think they may have a point — it probably is newsworthy that a film presenting those tired old claims as shocking revelations is somehow making more money than The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure, with its maybe-kinda-racist fish puppet that people might be offended with if anyone saw the movie, which no one has.

I wish I had a career manager as clever as FOX News, gussying up my movies to sound like must-see documentaries for right wing addleheads.

Of course, I'd have to give my movie away to theaters that could accomodate Hoverounds, but what the hey…

    1. Grokenstein

"I wish I had a career manager as clever as FOX News, gussying up two-hour-long negative late-campaign ads to sound like must-see documentaries"

Touched that up a little bit.

  2. Tundra Grifter

One of the crazed right wing nutz over at Amazon raved that "2016" is the second highest grossing political documentary in America.

We watched "Kicking and Screaming" over the weekend, so I remember the other name for "second place." It's "Loser."

"2016" grossed $1,627 per theatre (the only number that matters). So, over 3 days it grossed some $550 per theatre per day. At $7 a ticket, that's less than 80 people. Say it showed 3 times a day? Thirty people per showing? The size of my high school senior class.

    1. SexySmurf

Really? What's the highest grossing political documentary of all time, and how did that work out for John Kerry?

          1. Fare la Volpe

True story: I got my very first blowjob in the front row of a movie theater. Two months later I was working at that very theater and my job was to go into each room and make sure people weren't having sex during the shows.

      1. Tundra Grifter

        CT:

My first semester at the University of Miami, there were more students in the Introduction to Western Civilization class than there were kids in my entire high school.

Twice as many girls went to UofM as there were people in my hometown.

    2. Doktor Zoom

To be "fair," the $1627 / screen is last weekend's take; the figures form the butthurt editorial are correct for the movie's first wide-release weekend, August 24-27, when it was pulling $5,966 / screen. And as I note, that was a really slow weekend with very weak new releases.

      1. actor212

How does all that play out in real dollars, tho? For example, this film took in $26.2 million, and "Inconvenient Truth" took in $24 million, but "Truth" is more than five year old, so we'd have to adjust for inflation (let's call it 2% per annum) which comfortably beats D'nesh like a rented mule.

    3. finallyhappy

$7 – where can I see a movie for $7?? Not first run/ not even seniors. So I would say fewer people saw it.

      1. Tundra Grifter

        fh:

I would tend to agree with you. Just trying to use conservative figures. When we have the truth on our side we don't need to exaggerate.

Heck, out in the stix pix tix are probably not more than $6 or $7, anyways…

    4. Antispandex

It's easy to make it to number 7, when the other ten movies on the list suck. Just sayin'. I would rather watch a Jennifer Aniston film festival while sitting on a boiling cactus, myself.

      1. prommie

You have to turn to Dorothy Parker to find the right description of the acting talent of la Aniston, that thing about the gamut from A to B.

        1. FakaktaSouth

I give a shit, she was great at flipping off those folks on Office Space.
And Friends with Money, she was a good pot head maid.
And um, well, okay, I was 22 when Friends came out. SO SHUT UP.

  3. Come here a minute

The film also reveals Barack Obama's shocking history of having fathered black babies! (And the related news that those babies have mysteriously turned into lovely young women. How did they do it?)

    1. Chet Kincaid_

I have repeatedly warned people that Barack Obama was in a white woman's pants before he was born, yet the liberal media refuses to expose his prenatal fornication!!!1!1

    2. miss_grundy

Yes, Malia will be quite the stunner and I can't believe that little Sasha looked like quite the young lady at the convention. But she still had to go to school the next day!

  4. Tundra Grifter

"…a smattering of predictably critical reviews…" Of course the critical reviews were predictable.

    The movie sucks.

If you want to see a great documentary, rent "Hearts and Minds."

    1. IonaTrailer

''The Oriental doesn't put the same high price on life as does a Westerner. Life is plentiful. Life is cheap in the Orient."

Gen. William Westmoreland – Hearts and Minds

  5. Nothingisamiss

Wow! I voted for Obama without even knowing his college grades?!?! This is what makes me a scary liberal!

    1. T3rbo

Yeah, Harvard Law was probably in on the conspiracy. They were ordered by Soviet Russia to let Barry in. Had nothing to do with his grades. If you would have checked prisonplanet.com first, you would have known this, Sheeperson (singular of Sheeple?)

    2. Naked_Bunny

Hey, every job I've applied to in the 20 years since I graduated from college wanted to see a transcript*, so why shouldn't Obama show his?

      * This is a lie. Nobody ever asked.

  6. Antispandex

"The North American box office hit a slump at the weekend, with top earner "The Possession" taking in less than $10 million and what could be the gloomiest overall haul since the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington."

This could explain alot, unless you are really dumb. I would rather go see "Brave" with the kids, again, than almost any of the rest of the cinematic flatulence that is out there right now.

    1. AnAmericanInTO

It's pretty slim pickins out there when THE POSESSION, the homeless man's EXORCIST, is #1 for two weeks in a row. And I say that as someone who actually worked on it! (#humblebrag??)

So, I would perhaps slow down on the strutting if I were D'Souza or Fox.

    1. Terry

OMG, did you read about this remake?

Apparently, since the Soviets aren't likely to invade anymore and Putin is more likely to send us photos of himself looking awesomely macho, they had to change the bad guys.

      North Korea.

The country full of starving people who occasionally fire off a craptastic malfunctioning missile to remind people of how scary they think they are. That is who is supposed to invade the US and bring the country to its knees.

      Yeah, right.

      1. miss_grundy

When the movie was filmed in Detroit, the bad guys were supposed to be the Chinese (the movie was filmed almost two years ago). I guess the producers decided that would be a bad idea and decided to make the bad guys the North Koreans.

  7. IncenseDebate

That Indian dude is just trying to curry flavor with right wingers. I meant favor. I could really go for some aloo gohbi.

      1. IncenseDebate

I made some potato and peas in a variation on a vindaloo yesterday which was pretty tasty. It's waiting for me in the fridge at home.

      1. UnholyMoses

You mean the movie with characters stolen from the TV show "Bed Bugs"?

(A vacuum named J. Edgar? I mean, really? Maybe it cross dresses … ?)

  8. Callyson

Oh, it is ignoring the unprecedented success of 2016: Obama’s America, a low-budget documentary

Oh FFS, that's not even true–I read that story on several news sites. None of which made the movie sound like anything other than a long rant about "NOBAMA!" that I can get free by reading the comments from the trolls on HuffyPo…

      1. finallyhappy

also crying babies and small children talking- brought along by one of the assholes to a movie that no child should see.

  10. SexySmurf

We don’t even know what grades Obama got in college, since he guards his transcripts more carefully than he does national security secrets.

Obama's not hiding his transcripts; he just accidentally stapled them to Mitt Romney's tax returns.

  11. SayItWithWookies

Yeah, how come 2016 doesn't get as much buzz as some of the other seventh-best movies on their opening weekend, like — um — like — well, that long list of ones that got all that seventh-place buzz? You know which ones I'm talking about.

  12. MonkeyMotion

C'mon Dinesh: you need far more nekked ladies and/or buttsecks to get Republicans to go see your movie! Stupid.

    1. JohnnyQuick

For some reason, he's the only person of Indian heritage I've ever heard of that is pro-colonialism.

One would think the highly refined and not at all murderous stewardship of Indian people by their natural European betters would have gotten more fans.

      1. Self-Uploader

As a Catholic of Goan descent, he identifies more strongly with the Portuguese colonists who controlled that island for hundreds of years and who comprise some of his ancestry. He's very angry about Portugal's being displaced as a world power, and Goa becoming part of India. That's my theory. Maybe I'll write a book about it and make a film.

        1. JohnnyQuick

Wow, he's angry about something that happened in about 1500?

Yeah, I guessed that he had some Portuguese connection considering I knew about Goa, and he has that John Phillips Sousa name. He still seems to have a crazy powerful case of Uncle Tom-ism. It's one thing to suck up to the people in power in America, yet another to create a big thesis attacking all non-Europeans when you yourself are non-European.

But look at Niall Ferguson, that Queen Victoria's dick sucking Caledonian.

        2. AbandonHope_

Now that's what I call subtle satire. I applaud you, sir. Or madam. Or Hitlercat. Whichever suits you.

    2. horsedreamer_1

      He named his daughter Dixie.

Then again, Chang & Eng were slaveholders in Antebellum North Carolina…

    1. Rotundo_

That would explain the smears in them, it also would explain his funding by the Koch Bros (Georgia Pacific-Northern Toilet Paper), and the general quality of the writing.

  13. IonaTrailer

Hahaha – Paul Krugman says the GOP is a bunch of elderly white guys ( and D'Souzed and Alan West) yelling at empty chairs. He forgot delusional and out-of-touch.

Yup. That's the new face of the GOP.

    1. T3rbo

As a right winger, I reserve the right to not see the movie and just make up what I think is in it, so as to win arguments.

    1. viennawoods13

Wow. Interesting comments about what constitutes a boast-worthy per-screen average:
"So, while high opening weekend per screen averages are often touted, they are a) highly correlated with the size of the specific markets they measure, b) a high-water mark in a film's theatrical life: usually there is nowhere to go but down and c) not terribly impressive unless they are somewhere north of $50,000."

  14. sbj1964

The GOP is having a Hindu with his blue, six armed, half monkey man gods doing their movies for them? They just made Jesus cry with even more outsourcing.

  15. Doktor Zoom

Also, too, don't miss AO Scott's review of Oogieloves, written from the perspective of a 7-year-old.

"Nobody is mean in this movie. They talk very loud. Theres parts where you dance or say cheers and rimes which made it noisy in the theter. Hallie’s dad said it was Rocky Horror for toddlers whatever that is"

    1. OldWhiteLies

Hallie’s dad said it was Rocky Horror for toddlers whatever that is

Sounds like a line of testimony presented in a family court in an effort to regain child custody.

  16. HogeyeGrex

"Documentary"? Fuck. That shit is a fantasy that makes Lord of the Rings look like Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom.

  17. Living in Joy

How does someone with a foreign name like Dinesh and obviously does not look "American" get to be the darling of the Tea Party? Do you think he would get asked for his papers in Arizona? I know, same with Bobby Jindal, but at least he has the Bobby part going for him. These are things that would keep me up at night if I gave a shit.

    1. HelmutNewton

Because D'Souza (like Jindal, Hailey, Ponnuru, etc.) is an obedient little lapdog. Teabaggers say "Obama" and D'Souza runs around the room and pants: "Kenyan, anti-colonial!".

      1. AbandonHope_

I'm sure he is, of course, one of those that think Gandhi was an awful, evil commie, and that India was way better off under British rule.

  18. fredbell

Look, D'Souza is basically the Morrie Kessler character from Goodfella's and what Henry Hill said about him applies here:

    Him?
He's a nut job. He talks to everybody.
He's always acting like a jerk.
Nobody listens to what he says.
    Nobody cares what he says,
    he talks so much.

  19. finallyhappy

NEW topic- Ads on this page- obviously Rebecca has spycams because my ads are about my area, an author I follow on FB and a hotel chain I was considering staying at this past weekend. Don't try to tell me it is internet tracking. I am looking for the camera now that is focused on me and my computer screen. I think it is in the dust mop which is always in the corner.

    1. Doktor Zoom

I keep getting ads for "Yahweh Flunked Science" which is allegedly "A snarky guide to the Bible…..Shocking!"

  20. PinkoPopulist

I'm too lazy, and I wouldn't even know where to begin to find this information, but someone should find other documentaries that grossed about the same amount at the box office and then figure out how much press attention they got….

Actually fuck it, that's not worth any body's time. SCREW YOU D'SOUZA!

  21. ttommyunger

I repeat: who knew the choir would actually pay money to be preached at? Dinesh D'Souza, that's who. BTW, Dinesh, if you have your Republican Overlords drop trou you wont get that unsightly zipper burn on your mouth, it looks like a torn pocket.

  22. IonaTrailer

Dinesh is the asshole who states that "The cultural left in this country is responsible for causing 9/11 … the cultural left and its allies in Congress, the media, Hollywood, the non-profit sector and the universities are the primary cause of the volcano of anger toward America that is erupting from the Islamic world." (Salon.com/news, January 20, 2007)

Uh, what about those two unfunded wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, that the "liberal left" opposed. Oh, right. Don't bother me with facts.

    1. Chet Kincaid_

It is hard to fathom how little sense that quote is making. I am surprised Dinesh has not been to Michael Jackson's dermatologist for honkyfying, he is so thoroughly brainwashed.

      1. shelwood46

Well, Blossom did have a gay junkie brother who was a first responder, so, yeah, clearly that caused 9/11.

  23. ChrisM2011

I find it interesting that they were able to get the film into so many theaters. 2,017 according to Boxofficemojo. That's more even than Fahrenheit 911.

And who's the audience for this? Angry right wingers that want to turn their angry up a notch?

  24. Tundra Grifter

Diminished De'Ranged took Clint Eastwood's Ronald Reagan impersonation and raised him from a single empty chair to an empty movie theatre.

  25. BlueStateLibel

I read one of this guy's books that didn't have to do with politics, and it was one of the most embarrassing things I've come across in a long, long time, so badly written, so cloying, so written like an eighth-grader. Since then I've read books that are 100 times better on the subject, and remain astonished that he even got published.

  26. tracyhasfun

Best Dinesh moment…when Bill Maher asks him why he tossed him under the bus regarding the post 9/11 comments Mr. Maher made…which were in answer to statements made by…um, Dinesh.

The interview itself was UNREAL. Dinesh kept insisting that he just knew that Mr. President was and America-hating liar with RAGE RAGE issues.

So, to Dinesh or not to Dinesh? I think, nah.

  27. tconrad

Here in sweltering, powerless post-Isaac NOLA, we were looking for anyplace to go that might have A/C and relax for awhile. All area AMC Theaters were sort of open but with only one movie: this piece of crap.

I would love to know how they wrangled that one. Or maybe I wouldn't. At any rate there wasn't enough heat in hell to make me sit through it. We passed.

  28. OldWhiteLies

…the fuck is an Oogielove ?

Geeze, I come back from a cupla weeks of holiday with Mrs OWL and OWL Esquire and what senses I have remaining (that were not dulled by extensive imbibing of spirits) are assaulted with the likes of something called an Oogielove. I'm having a hard enough time catching up with the Wonkette posts without this. And who the wholly fuck is this boo-boo kid? – she makes Mema look eloquent. Looks like I also missed an opportunity at my empty chair submission – that had – Hell, still has – hilarity written all over it.

Oh, and, yes [insert obligatory overblown stage sigh and pearl-clutching (may I borrow sumbuddy's pearls a moment?)] it is of course a tragedy of nothing less than epic proportions that this monumental exposé depicting our blah president's true sinister intentions has gained so resoundingly meager a response in both patronage and media coverage. OK, no, it really isn't any form of tragedy whatsoever – THIS IS YOUR FUCKING FREE MARKET, BABY; CHEW ON THAT YOU RACIST BASTERDS!

    1. AbandonHope_

You got it all wrong. It's simple: if a liberal fails, it's the free market. If a conservative succeeds, it's the free market. If either of the opposites happen, it's a SOCIALIST COMMUNIST FASCIST NAZITASTIC CONSPIRACY.

      1. OldWhiteLies

Oh, right. I stand corrected and humbled. Re-assimilating after vaca is hellish – one loses touch with all such universal rules of the political universe.

[hollars obnoxiously down hall at Mrs OWL who is still unpacking] "Do I have any of that last bottle of Jameson left over from vacation …?"

    1. M. Bouffant

That he has a Portu'gee last name & was Catholic until he became an evangelical might indicate that his ancestors were collaborators w/ their conquerors, & that one of his female ancestors was probably a hoor for some Portuguese colonist.

    2. BoroPrimorac

Anti-colonialism is just code for: Obama is itching to get back at whites for all their crimes against the browns. For four years republicans have been trying to get a majority of whites to believe this.

  29. One_Man_Band

This weekend I saw Miike's remake of Hara-Kiri, which was great. It involves a hard-working family that can't afford health care, and when one of them goes to visit the powerful folks in the fancy house to ask for some help, they make him disembowel himself with a stick and then have a good laugh.

Might as well be set in America in 2012, instead of Japan in the 1600s.

  30. qwerty42

The transcripts … wtf? This is the kind of stuff that gets palmed off as "vetting" by these simpletons?

  31. gogogodzilla

I had a conversation with a wingnut who urged me repeatedly to see this steaming character assassination turd. I finally agreed if she would see An Inconvenient Truth. She replied that this was exactly what was wrong with liberals–always trying to shove radical propaganda down people's throats.

    You can't fix stupid.

  32. DocChaos

So far Obama 2016 has done about a quarter of the box office of Fahrenheit 9/11, which as we know, completely destroyed Bush's chances at a second term.

  33. Grokenstein

I remember some clown at IMDb crowing that because Pixar's "Cars" took in more money than "An Inconvenient Truth," it stood to reason that SHUT UP, HIPPIES. Maybe D'nesh D'umbass should've hooked up with the company that made "The Lion of Judah" (see Wikipedia etc) to make "Mighty Morphin' Mitt and the Migrant Magic Underpants Gnomes" instead.

  34. HelmutNewton

I seem to recall a debate D'Souza had with Hitchens on religion. Needless to say, Hitch demolished him, but D'Souza was too dumb to realize he'd been destroyed.

  35. rickmaci

F*ing D'Souza is just jelly because he came here for college from India, didn't want to go back to that hell hole so he overstayed his visa and can never be POTUS because his parents didn't have the foresight when he was born to plant a forged birth certificate and news announcement in Hawaii.

  36. fuflans

this was playing at our local independent cinema this weekend (libtard north side of bamz' hometown. go figure).

we went to the bar with everyone else.

  37. usuhname

You'd think they'd of come up with at least one pseudo-bombshell, or atleast had the good sense to make some new stuff up. I mean, even the target-audience could of just (and probably did) watch Fox News for the last four years and already know the entire film "plot".

  38. randcoolcatdaddy

To put this in perspective, Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 took in $23.9 million on its opening weekend in the US and Canada. Two million copies were sold on dvd the day it was released.

  39. AddHomonym

Google news search for the #6 movie The Odd Life of Timothy Green: 10,400 hits. For the wingnut movie? 27,600. Case dismissed, next case.

  40. Lazy Media

Hey, this "movie" has made $26 million so far. That makes it the 68th highest-grossing movie of 2012. Sixty-eight! Is there any question that the MSM has denied Dinesh D'Souza $1 million to keep him from sexy fun times?

  41. docterry6973

I am sure that every ticket was sold to an undecided voter who now supports Romney. So it was money well-earned.

  42. Robman2

D'Sousa, born into wealth, Dad was a Johnson and Johnson exec in India.

My take, Didousch, found out two things, he wields the Indian penchant for caste alignment as a result of NOT being a child with an MIA dad, and, his extra darkling looks, made him have to unbutt hurt with the whites he ended up going to school with in Nazi occupied (NO MLK DAY HERE) state of AZ.

Found out by high school, pandering to the right wing made him acceptable, 50 shades of darkness, and his cast borne right wing ethos, was shepherded into Stanford (no public funds or scholarships for merit, right wing boot camp school) then onto Heritage, Reagan's minions and eventually, funded by right wing darling because HE IS some sort of blend on the color wheel.

THAT is another form of affirmative action, like Paul Rayn, born into it, playing that struggles were normative.

He's jealous of Barack, and the self assured form of personal loathing was apparent when he never acknowledged even one point of fact on Maher.

  43. grace_nearing

As with Truman Capote's voiceover in "A Thanksgiving to Remember," did the audio guys have to tweak the tape speed to get Dinesh's voice down from the castrato range?

  44. TribecaMike

The MSM claiming Obama’s America is a hit is on a par with the oft-repeated MSM cliche "Mormonism is the fastest growing religion." Both claims are BS, but consulting Dr. Google is tough on the fingertips.
