Brave Michigan City Councilman Under Fire Just For Waving Poster Of Obama With Spear Through His Skull

better or worse than a bone through the nose?

paulsmith-sterlingheightsSterling Heights, Michigan is one of those blandly Caucasian suburbs filled with cul-de-sacs and Applebees franchises. Local wits are known to on occasion refer to this community as “Sterile Heights” or “Sterling Whites.” So one shouldn’t be surprised to learn that Sterling Heights City Councilman Paul Smith not only thinks some modern-day Robespierre should cold kill President Barack Obama for being worse than Hitler, but he has the guts to say it.
Below, please find video of a 2009 Tea Party rally in Troy, and Smith waving signs showing former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm in a noose and Barack Obama with a spear through his skull, with the legend “shit on a stick.”

“Hitler was a terrible guy but at least he wasn’t a traitor to Germany,” Smith said. “Obama is a traitor to America.”

But here’s the really surprising part, you guys.

After this tape was discovered, all the other Sterling Heights City Council people said they’d like to get rid of Paul Smith just for saying Barack Obama should get speared in the head for being worse than Hitler!

That’s how deep this conspiracy goes. The Islamic-Marxist George Soros-funded Kenyan brownshirts have clearly infiltrated the Sterling Heights City Council to stop brave Paul Smith from speaking truth to power. Literally, there can be no other explanation.

In fairness, it's even harder to make a complex political statement in this country these days.

  1. Beowoof

I guess he graduated from the 90's militia groups who used to run around getting ready to fight off the black helicopters. Now he has stepped up to be the Michigan KKK executioner. Funny there is no IQ test for that position.

  2. docterry6973

Last time I talked to Mr. Soros I asked him to take care of this guy. I call him Georgie-poo by the way. Soros, I mean.

  3. SorosBot

But don't you dare blame the likes of Rush Limbaugh for spreading the culture of hatred and violence!

    1. mlle_derp

Haha! You used 'Rush Limbaugh' & culture in the same sentence & you DIDN'T mean the kind of culture you grow in a petri dish?

    2. tessiee

And for God's sake, don't even mention the possibility of gun control in any way, shape, or form.

    1. rickmaci

The white hoodie and poster are nice touches. So much less scary than white sheets and a burning cross.

    2. miss_grundy

Racist, bigoted, sexist, chauvinist, unbelievably stupid, WHITE men are Republicans these days and I can tell you as someone who lives in southeastern Michigan that not only are these people excessively racist but they are STUPID to boot. Which is why this state is so freaking backward.

  4. second_gen

Okay, I just had to apologize to Canada, now I'll apologize to the whole world. We're not ALL like this in Michigan.

      1. Negropolis

The trees are quite nice, but the roads, well, it's not even fair to call them roads, anymore. They are basically poorly maintained trails. Honestly, drive down the mainstreet of any Michigan town or city and you'll see that auto repair shops are like our Starbucks: they're on every block.

  5. zippy_w_pinhead

Maybe we can get Mike Huckabee to organize a Paul Smith appreciation day to defend his "free speech"- I'm sure he knows a Fab caterer

  6. noodlesalad

Freedom of speech means no consequences for racists ever, duh. It's right there in the Constitushun, next to the bit about required assault rifle ownership.

  7. MissTaken

Hitler was a terrible guy but at least he wasn’t a traitor to Germany

Hard to argue with such sound logic.

  8. Fukui-sanYesOta

    Pelosi apparently likes:

    - wetbacks
    - bribes from importers
    - your fags pay

Aside from the obvious racial slur, what does "your fags pay" even mean? Sure, I smoke, but I pay for those.

    1. MissTaken

Maybe it was supposed to be 'you're fags, pay'? Reminding us that gay people pay for goods and services just like the rest of America.

      1. Fukui-sanYesOta

That makes sense. Rather like claiming Bammaz is turning the US into Uganda with his vicious repeal of DADT and not defending DOMA cases.

    2. Trannysurprise

I got a bill in the mail from Pelosi and wondered what that was.

      The more you know.

  9. zippy_w_pinhead

Wait! I thought that according to these people, that the black guy was the one supposed to be chucking the spear…

  10. coolhandnuke

Would someone spearhead the movement to enlighten Paul Smith at point blank range….with votes…always with votes.

  11. StealthMuslin

I'm confused. If the Councilman hates "fags" wouldn't he want Obama to change America into Uganda?
Do his signs not talk to each other ever?

  12. mavenmaven

Hitler wasn't a traitor to Germany? Leading his people into unneccessary war that led to the death of massive numbers on both sides and impoverishing his country as a result? That's not a traitor? Oh, its the Republican platform? Oops.

  13. boobookitteh

Merriam-Webster defines 'treason' as: "the offense of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance or to kill or personally injure the sovereign or the sovereign's family."

    Huh.

  14. poorgradstudent

Once again you LIEBERALS are making something out of nothing. The whole image was just an allegory saying he'll stab Obama in the face with constructive criticism.

  15. barto

City council wants Paul out because he:

    1) forgot to sharpie in the Hitler mustache on Nombama

    2) didn't witch doctor Nobama up at all or festoon watermelons and fried chicken anywhere

    3) portrayed Nobama smoking a ciggie and not reefer, and

    4) was not quite offensive enough to meet TP standards (plus he spelled most things correctly)

They are hoping his replacement will be a more suitable individual.

    1. boobookitteh

He did utilize a spear, which could be construed as an homage to a certain racist slur.

Although points off for subtlety (or what passes for it with these boors).

  16. PhilippePetain

People are just cold denying this man's First Amendment right to not have to put up with any repercussions for what he says.

    1. rickmaci

Apparently this turdbrain put in nearly 40 years with GM. He must be retired on a nice fat pension now. Does he even have a clue that his pension would have been wiped out and he would be eating dog food remnants or worse today if the POTUS hand not done the bailout but instead let GM go belly up? Sorry I know it's asking more than can be expected for these hater, racists wingtards to be logical.

      1. miss_grundy

No, this jerk, like the rest of the idiot whites who live here in Michigan, lack critical thinking skills. Most of these retired autoworkers are even against unions and would love to see Michigan turned into a right-to-work state. They have absolutely no concept of anything. It is almost as if they slept through grammar, middle and high school and nothing passed through their brains.

      2. mlle_derp

40 years with GM, huh? (Clearly union, since he can afford to live in his segregated white Michigan paradise.)

Maybe we should cut him some slack- I hear that inhaling paint &/or petrochemical fumes can really fuck with your brain cells. This man is clearly insane, & needs medical care of the sort he could get if he would just move to almost any other country in the world.

      3. Biel_ze_Bubba

Yeah … if Bain had taken over GM (this was actually considered), they'd be making Chevys in China right now, and this gomer's pension would have been flushed down the toilet in order to put an extra hundred million into Bain's pockets.

If Mitt had taken away his his money, his health care, and his income, he'd be making ads for Obama.

        1. GunToting[Redacted]

"If Mitt had taken away his his money, his health care, and his income, he'd be making ads for Obama."

What are ya, new? Romney could have set his cat on fire, and it would still be the Negro's fault.

        2. grex1949

I gotta go with the GunToter on this one. Smith's motivation is racism, ignorance and blind hatred, none of which are subject to change by reasoning. There is no hope for this guy. None.

  17. MissTaken

I didn't realize that Uganda not only killed Osama Bin Laden but also mandates that insurance companies cover contraception, too. Cool.

    1. SorosBot

I thought Uganda was the place with the death penalty for gay people – it sounds like this dickbrain would like it there. Well except for all the black people.

    2. Willardbot9000_V2.5

Too many blahs to send our teabaggies even if they do have the whole "kill the gays" thing…which could really bite right wingers in the asses given the near constant stream of illicit gay sex out of the anti-gay crowd. So between that small problem and the big problem of too many blahs without enough holy wahs…we can't get rid of our teabuggers….

    1. MissTaken

That's too obvious. See how cool Barry is? He's so cool he's still smoking while his head is on a pike. Kenya? That's for pussies.

  18. rickmaci

If the word dumbfuck didn't already exist, it would need to be invented just to describe this asshat.

  19. Fox n Fiends

lets put this guy and the black hebrews in a room together, lock the door, and let them discuss things in depth.

        1. orygoon

Yeah, because we ladies always are sneaking stuff up past those things. I mean, back when I was 13 and got my first period while visiting the grandparents, and my big sister got her Tampax out and said here, use these, my very first thought was "Damn! Now I have the best hiding place EVER!"

          1. BoatOfVelociraptors

Vagina! Not only a perfectly pleasant place to put your penis, but can carry concealed ketamine as well! Girls rule!

  20. obfuscator2

move over, paul ryan, you eddie munster-looking motherfucker!

it looks like we've got a new favorite for the republican vp pick!

    1. RadioBowels

Fuck coupons, the oldz get a bottle of Geritol and a free pair of those wrap around cataract glasses. Free Marketz!

    2. Willardbot9000_V2.5

You know…this guy kind of looks like Granpa Munster so not only does he have Eddie beat in insanity and age tenure…but he also is ahead of him in Munster seniority which means a lot to Rombot the Jetson reject.

  21. viennawoods13

I mean, say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's not treasonous!

  22. Mumbly_Joe

    LIBERAL FICUS!!!!1

(No, really, a bunch of the other teabaggers in the video are shouting that he's obviously a sekrit librul infiltrator. Nope, sorry, this guy is just the natural endpoint of your movement. Congrats!)

  23. Chichikovovich

Hitler was a terrible guy but at least he wasn’t a traitor to Germany,” Smith said. “Obama is a traitor to America.”

So, um, if I follow Mr. Smith, he wants to say that if Obama made the US just like Hitler's Germany, he would thereby stop being a traitor to America?

That's the kind of bold vision of leadership that Sterling Heights needs.

    1. Callyson

And he's in a swing state, so his vote is more important than mine.

(Dashes off to the liquor store…)

  24. occams8ball

I know what you are thinking, The US is half full of white supremacists. But me, because of who I am and my optimistic world view, and even though it may cost me my life, suggest to you; no, citizen, the US is half EMPTY of white supremacists.

  25. glasspusher

Guys' so white he has to wear shades or he'll blind himself, and this is coming from a guy who has blond eyelashes, so I should know.

  26. TribecaMike

Do the rightie fundamentalists on C Street know one of theirs is putting down Uganda?

Oops, I see StealthMuslin got there first.

    1. bobbert

That had me going for a bit (https:, really?) until I looked closer. Of course, then the actual Twatter page is explicit.

      1. Fukui-sanYesOta

Gah. Leni is hard to deal with. Olympia set the way to film Athletics since the day she did that cinematography; it was well before its time.

Of course, all the other odious stuff is still brilliant from a cinematic perspective.

        1. RadioBowels

Thanks Fukui for appreciating the strange beauty juxtaposed over an evil undercurrent of fascism that was this utterly complex character. Maybe I should have just answered: Rudolph Hess.

        2. Mumbly_Joe

Her later photography was rather gorgeous too, it's kinda a shame that she was also so heavily invested in pretending that whole Nazi thing totally never happened at all, compounding the odiousness.

  27. Negropolis

“Hitler was a terrible guy but at least he wasn’t a traitor to Germany,” Smith said. “Obama is a traitor to America.”

Honestly, this is something you'd hear in a movie of political satire staring someone like Robin Williams. How many rabbit wholes do we have to fall through before we hit the bottom? Come on, I'm setting you guys up…

BTW, Jeff, Sterling Heights is not nearly as right-wing as you make it sound. The entire industrial corridor up through Macomb County is actually rather swingy, you know, the Reagan "Democrats" and such. Now, the new shit off the industrial corridor that runs through Warren and Sterling Heights can be teabagger territory at times, but Warren and Sterling Heights (both huge suburbs of 130,000) don't usually elect folks like this crazy-ass douchebag.

    1. Negropolis

Also, Hitler wasn't a traiter to Germany? The ghost of Claus von Stauffenberg would like a word with you, Mr. Smith.

      1. Mumbly_Joe

Wasn't, he, like, thrown in jail for trying to overthrow the government at some point or another? It's hard to get much more treasoney than that.

          1. Chichikovovich

But he had some kind of massive writer's block, because writing the book was apparently a struggle.

  28. iburl

All this right wing talk of socialism since 2008 is far, far, more than I heard during 6 years of colledge edumacatyn. The more they hate it, the more I'm starting to believe it's a good idea. I already know I'm a socialist when it comes to things like the library, police, fire fighting, and the post office, you know, Hitlerian Communism.

    1. Fukui-sanYesOta

I quite like Britain's NHS and culture of entrepreneurialism. That makes me a Fascist Marxist, I suppose.

    2. GeorgiaBurning

Libraries, fire fighting, post office- all evil plots by comrade Benjamin Franklin to destroy America

  29. Mumbly_Joe

Actually, I suspect that at among those Germans who weren't fucking Nazis, there might've been some disagreement over who was or was not a traitor.

I mean, very, very quiet disagreement, but.

  30. comrad_darkness

Since he's a white republican winger, if he owns fewer than 15 guns, everyone can relax, he's a moderate.

  31. not that Dewey

He meant to show Obama chucking a spear, not receiving one in the skull. He apologizes if you were stupid enough to be offended by this.

    Smith needs to be skullchucked.

  32. glamourdammerung

But these cretins will keep on lying about how it is only about differences in policy while whining about how they are being "picked on for no reason".

  33. anniegetyerfun

I think it's time to leave this guy in a room with the rapist Black Hebrew preachers and see what develops.

    1. tessiee

As long as it's a soundproofed room so that the decent, sane people don't have to listen to them, then we're good to go.

    1. Biel_ze_Bubba

Next Olympics are in Rio. They'll make up for it by wearing thongs.
(Bonus: NBC zooming in to read the team logos.)

  34. GregComlish

“Hitler was a terrible guy but at least he wasn’t a traitor to Germany,” Smith said. “Obama is a traitor to America.”

Following the failed "Beer Hall Putsch" (Hitler's first attempt at seizing power) Hitler was literally tried and convicted of high treason. This is not including all the other additional crimes Hitler did that were certainly a betrayal of Germany.

Fox News poll: Obama's lead grows as Romney's support slips
    August 9, 2012
Mitt Romney has had a tough couple of weeks on the campaign trail — and it shows in the latest Fox News poll. After a barrage of campaign ads, negative news coverage of his overseas trip and ongoing talk about his tax returns, Romney’s favorable rating and standing in the trial ballot have declined. As a result, President Obama has opened his biggest lead since Romney became the presumptive Republican nominee.

    1. Biel_ze_Bubba

You know what would really, really help? Giving nutbars like Smitty here all the national exposure he wants. One 60-second spot on prime-time national TV would have an amazing effect.

    2. James Michael Curley

An unfavorable rating above 50% in August is a death knell to a candidate.
      1. Fox isn't the only poll showing it.
      2. He has a majority unfavorable rating among those who care enough to know who the candidate is compared to those who may notice a national election is going on sometime after Labor Day.
      3. He will have an automatic built in above 20% unfavorable rating to those who are yet to learn who the candidate is.
      4. It is very rare that a non-incumbent candidate with an unfavorable rating above 35% after Labor Day wins the election.

      1. Designer_Rants

I did not know that. Sounds like the knowledge Nate Silver drops regularly. His 538 blog makes me feel all hopey-changey because the electoral college looks good for Obama, and that's what really matters, right?

        1. James Michael Curley

Well, opinion and good faith effort to remember the stats correctly on 3. & 4.Nate Silvers stuff is interesting and varies from the NY Times analysis in that 538 does not give any tossup states and I think that is an issue the campaigns will significantly examine. Once again the NY Times map shows Florida as a tossup but that also shows Romney cannot win if he loses Florida. Obama, on the other hand can lose Florida and win with a nice margin if he runs the table on the other tossup states. And you heard it here first. The OFA NJ organization is downsizing its NJ operation to move its major footprint to PA by Labor Day.As for Nate’s Tipping Point State graphs, Return on Investment Index and a few of those other things; all they show is that Nate needs to get laid – soon.

      2. Negropolis

I love how the media keeps parroting "but no president has ever won re-election with 8%+ unemployment since the Great Depression!" as if any election after the Great Recession is ever going to be normal, again. These idiots don't get how much the recession and the election of the first black president kind of changed everything in ways we still don't even know, yet. We're in uncharted territory, now.

        1. James Michael Curley

First there would be FDR in 1936 at least. Then one could better examine Reagan in 1984 when in late 1983 when the 1984 recession started the BLS and Commerce Dept made major changes in the way unemployment is calculated providing a statistical advantage for Reagan. Poppy Bush did not get reelected and his unemployment figures also should have been higher because his BLS changed the rules again to the three level structure we have now where the number everyone counts is only those who are receiving unemployment and seeking a job. Those whose benefits expire and are not continued on some BLS job help program are dropped into the next lowest tier. What should also be considered is that a law passed in 2005 and signed by Dubya which was going to give veterans a great boost removed returning veterans who were discharged from the unemployment rolls for a substantial period of time. This was because the unemployment rate was spiking due to returning veterans who were called up from their reserve units. There no longer is as solid a guarantee that a veteran called up by his reserve unit gets his job back when he returns and those guys are at least due unemployment if they cannot find work. This adds to the artificiality of the current unemployment statistics because that law expired and was not renewed so Obama gets blaimed for thousands of veterans who are on unemployment but would not have been counted under the Bush years by the BLS.

  36. Biel_ze_Bubba

    At least Hitler didn't __________.

Fill in the blank! This would be a great internet meme.

        1. James Michael Curley

If you go by train you have to spend six hours at the border while they change the wheels.

  37. neiltheblaze

The entire country is awash with fine upstanding public servants just like this one! We're so fucked.

  38. elburritodeluxe

At least Sterling Heights didn't elect a Democrat to the City Council. He would not have shared their Strong Republican Values.

  39. TruthInTroy

Paul Smith is a supporter of the Troy Mayor, Janice Daniels, who made the bigoted remark last fall. We currently have a recall of her on the November ballot. He is actively helping her fight this. She has a lot of money backing her. We are doing fundraisers, but need all the help we can get. Please go to www:recalljanice.com to donate or for more information. We need to send a message that this type of behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Together we can make a statement. Thank you.

    1. Negropolis

I'll second that request, but I have to say that in a presidential election year, her electoral ass is grass, as they say. Truth is, she was only ever elected in the first place because of super low turnout in a mid-term.
