GOP Blocks Student Loan Bill, Will Blame Obama For Blocking Student Loan Bill

by Rebecca Schoenkopf

history of beer pong 101So Barack Obama was all, hey students, let me come to your college and sing you some Al Green and whisper sweet nothings about Derrida and Pound and TS Eliot and also about how it is important that the interest rate on your student loan does not DOUBLE, and Republicans were all hey that is not fair because our position is really unpopular and you are being “political” and “pathetic” by pointing it out! And then they were all oh wait, we guess we will be against the interest on student loans rising too, and we are so against it that we will block your bill to keep those interest rates from doubling, because that is how you show you are “for” something when you are a Republican.

But whyfore the hold-up, Senate Republicans? Oh, Obama wanted to pay the $6 billion tab by “boosting Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes on high-earning stockholders of some privately owned corporations,” and you want to pay for it by repealing Obamacare. That does make sense, and is totally fair. In the meantime, perhaps these entitled college snobs could ask their parents for $20 big, or get off the couch and get three jobs.

Why does Barack Obama threaten to veto the GOP’s good-hearted and good-faith student loan bill? Does he hate all college students, or just the white ones? Probably just the white ones. [LAT]

Think of the higher interest rates as a "Snob Tax" for all the snobby college strivers with all their constant snobbiness.

Also, those nice fellows in the photo should meet my avatar girls.

Chill-A-Sketch May 8, 2012 at 5:21 pm

Don't worry, kids; It's not like you were gonna be able to get a jerb to pay for those loans anyway.

And without the provision of Obamacare you can't be on your parents' health insurance until you turn 26.
Have a nice fucking day.

Republicans: Liberals are doing class warfare!

Reality: Republicans are beating the ever-living shit out of everyone not in the top 1% and have been for decades

Republicans: Obama is a marxist!

Reality: Obama isn't an insane supply-side lunatic

Republicans: Obamacare is socialist and evil!

Reality: uh, just ignore the fact that it's pretty much the same as the Republican alternative to Hillarycare

Isyaignert May 8, 2012 at 8:18 pm

CMU? All the years I lived in Pittsburgh's East End, is it possible I enjoyed pork products at the O with Baconz?

James Michael Curley May 9, 2012 at 9:55 am

McKee Place, down by the Boulevard.

Then beer rioting at the Wooden Keg around the corner. On a Sunday morning the place to be was hung over with a bunch of the guys sharing the Sunday Post-Gazette and a plate of the O's fries.

I was on my motorcycle once and passing the Wooden Keg while a little 10 or 15 man disagreement was going on after the 1971 Pirates World Series win and some f*ckward ran out into the street pulled me off my bike.

Jukesgrrl May 9, 2012 at 8:28 pm

Ah, memories of the 'burgh. I wasn't a Keg grrl, but I once saw a drag queen get thrown through the plate glass window of Ritter's Diner.Messed up the outfit, but miraculously she was fine.I hope you survived the bike incident without injury.I do believe we must have crossed paths at least one time our lives, JMC.

James Michael Curley May 12, 2012 at 8:35 am

Ritter’s – wow forgot about that place, in part because there were a few late nights there that were best forgotten.

Jukesgrrl May 9, 2012 at 9:40 pm

One more thing, if you lived on McKee near the Boulevard, you might enjoy the beautiful poem Joseph Pockets by Gerald Stern. It was written in 1977, the year he was a guest prof at Pitt and lived behind the Pgh Playhouse.
http://books.google.com/books?id=vMYZPz8BByAC&amp

James Michael Curley May 12, 2012 at 8:25 am

Thanks, I enjoyed that and will try to keep it somewhere. Going down McKee to the Boulevard, when you cross it there is a small enclave with a street called Kennett Square. I had an apartment over a store which was the Black Panther headquarters a few months before (or so the mostly white polish locals said). You could walk to the end of the street and stand on a cliff overlooking the river.

Baconzgood May 9, 2012 at 10:14 am

It may be true. I've gotten many trays of fries from the Dirty O at 3AM at my day.

JH: You say you have regrets. I wonder is there one thing that you regret more than others? Is there something that stands out in your mind?

CJ: I was totally wrong about Barack Obama. That’s one of my main regrets at this point. I really fell for a lot of the right wing propaganda, and I thought he was going to be a communist and a radical leftist and all that stuff. I believed a lot of the propaganda about him. If I could go back I would vote for him now, but we don’t have that time machine yet. That’s actually one of the main things. I should not have been so ready to accept it. That was one of the things that really woke me up, seeing the truth as opposed to all the lies that were being spread by this blizzard of propaganda.

weejee May 8, 2012 at 8:23 pm

And I actually believe someone on our side planned this out way in advance! Just like the contraceptive coverage thing. Neither of these are accidents.

Negropolis May 8, 2012 at 10:34 pm

Can someone tell me why 52 votes in a body of 100 isn't a workable majority? Cloture should be the same as an actual vote: 50 + 1.

Harry, I love ya', but I hate ya', too. Also.

mayor_quimby May 9, 2012 at 12:47 am

Somebody has to have the balls to flip over the card table and start punching people, and that is never gonna happen.

James Michael Curley May 9, 2012 at 10:31 am

It can be done. All that is needed is a simple majority to change the rules. However, that process can only be implemented at the beginning of a Senate legislative session. When Obama was elected and Biden became President of the Senate it was considered. However a 'compromise' was offered and voted upon because there were too many Democratic Senators who did not want to give up the filibuster completely. The compromised rule change goes something like first presentation, business as usual 60 votes needed for cloture, second presentation 54 votes will bring an end to the filibuster, third presentation, simple majority. Something like that.

Negropolis May 9, 2012 at 9:06 pm

Can't this be done annually?

James Michael Curley May 12, 2012 at 8:29 am

Due to the convoluted, almost self destructive jumble of rules which is called the Senate, the particular procedure can only be done at the opening of a new Congressional Session. I understand that presently any attempt to change the rules must be brought forward through the same process as a bill, thus filibuster rules against the attempt of a simple majority to eliminate the filibuster.

ttommyunger May 8, 2012 at 10:37 pm

Pay for this by eliminating women's preventative health care or tax businesses more. Wow, that's a tough one……NOT!

I envy you. I think they opened the Oakland one while I was still living in Oakland three and a half decades ago but I never went to any but the one on the strip. Tho’ Robert Whorley’s was my favorite when I could afford an extra dime for the trolly. There was a place on Fifth near Honus Wagner’s that had Jambalaya that would make you sweat. I’m sure a bowl would kill me these days.

I know it well. When I was in college my best friend rented a house on McKee (w/ about 100 other people) that was quite memorable. They rented it furnished from an old Italian couple who had moved to Florida. The house had Italian gramma furniture and every upholstered piece came with a clear plastic cover. In the foyer there were framed portraits of the Pope and President and Mrs. Kennedy. We thought it was hilarious.

You know that up McKee in the larger well kept homes lived some of the legends of Pittsburgh’s crime family at the time. Mannarino lived out in Shadyside and I think LaRocca lived in Homewood, but Mike Genovese lived in that big house near Louisa and owned all those three story apartment houses with the balconies. On the gastronomic side of the times three words, Larry and Carol’s.

I wonder if those people my pals rented from knew the Genoveses. The furniture in there was really old school, but GREAT quality. The apartments with the balconies was where Jerry Stern lived.Pitt rented the apartment for him.Wonder if they knew the owner? And Larry and Carols … YES.Thanks for the walk down memory lane.Being in Tucson, I'm a long way from home.
