Does Mitt Romney Support The Equal Pay Act? He Will ‘Get Back To You On That’

by Liz Colville

BACK TO WORK LADIES

Biggest loser Mitt Romney employs some real lumps, as evidenced by a spokesperson’s comment Wednesday regarding the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, which, in the words of its namesake, and YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS, but, heh, Mr. Romney doesn’t, “ensures women have the tools to get equal pay for equal work.” When Huffington Post reporter Sam Stein asked during a Romney conference call whether Romney supported the act, there was a long pause, and then a gentleman responded, “We’ll have to get back to you on that.” A million political years later, another spokesperson, who may or may not have a Twitter Problem, finally coughed up a response — on Twitter, because that is where she feels most comfortable. It went something like: (flirtatious eye roll, dismissive hand gesture): “You sillies.” Away from the prying eyes of Twitter, a vase of flowers was thrown across a room.

There is some backstory here, namely that the Romney camp has been saying things all week about how the “war on women” was really started by General Barack Obama, and that “92 percent” of jobs lost under the Obama Administration have belonged to women. QUE? So! Among other things the conference call was, not that the Romney camp even knew this, intended to delve deeper into those remarks.

Here is the audio from the conference call!

OH BUT THEY ARE BACK! Watch your back:

As an aside, can you imagine having Mitt Romney as your Twitter wallpaper, as Andrea Saul does?

Anyway, very quickly, the Obama team got Lily Ledbetter herself to release a statement on Romney’s non-remarks:

I was shocked and disappointed to hear that Mitt Romney is not willing to stand up for women and their families. If he is truly concerned about women in this economy, he wouldn’t have to take time to ‘think’ about whether he supports the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. This Act not only ensures women have the tools to get equal pay for equal work, but it means their families will be better served also. Women earn just 77 cents to every dollar that men earn for the same job, which is why President Obama took decisive action and made this the first bill that he signed when he took office

Does Obama support jobs for women? omen? en? n?

Andrea Saul got off Twitter for a sec to tell the media that they are being DICKS! No, really, just to say that, in the words of Talking Points Memo:

Mitt Romney will not repeal the Lilly Ledbetter Fairy Pay Act…

Fairies will continue to get paid. Good. [Talking Points Memo, Various Twitter Accounts]

These guys don't believe in money. Newt pays Callista in diamonds. Rick Santorum gives his wife the gift of pregnancy.

Barb April 11, 2012 at 1:17 pm

For Romney, equal pay for women is allowing them to work extra hours to get it.

BornInATrailer April 11, 2012 at 1:28 pm

Why are you people talking about Santorum and equal pay for women? He can't get past the equal work.

Well they have to make up for that time of the month when they're not productive enough.

I miss Ricky. One of the high points of the primary campaign occurred in an early debate. Rick Santorum posed this foreign policy question: If Iran attacked Turkey from the rear, would Greece help? Mitt said it wouldn’t. Newt said it does for him.

If anybody gets attacked from the rear, Rick is the go-to guy,

No Romney, that does not mean you have to pay each of your wives the same rate.

ManchuCandidate April 11, 2012 at 1:13 pm

Note to Ms Saul: Considering that it's guys like or who support Mittens who are largely responsibility for a considerable number of the job losses… nice try loser.

SexySmurf April 11, 2012 at 1:14 pm

“92 percent” of jobs lost under the Obama Administration have belonged to women.

The other 8% belonged to the other people.

"Especially the ones who aren't my wives/mommies."

Callyson April 11, 2012 at 1:15 pm

Also, even Politico sees through Mittens' claim about women losing 92% of the jobs under Obama:

There’s a simple reason why job losses look worse for women during Obama’s presidency: Almost 3.3 million men were fired during the George W. Bush’s last year in office, while the losses for women were more drawn out over time.
http://www.politico.com/politico44/2012/04/romney

And:

On a Romney campaign surrogates conference call to bash President Barack Obama's stewardship of the economy Wednesday morning, officials faced a series of questions about the campaign's recent argument that 92 percent of jobs lost during the recession were held by women.
Three separate times the surrogates, who included Lanhee Chen, the campaign's chief policy adviser, were asked what specifically about Obama's policies are bad for women, and three times the campaign offered no specifics.

Assholes.

Just hang out a while… he will change his mind… and back again…

biblioteq_tress April 11, 2012 at 1:23 pm

One of the nastier little things Romney has done lately is imposed his flippetyness on his own mother. She was pro-choice, until Willard found that inconvenient and posthumously changed her mind for her. Wait a minute… just.. like…posthumous…conversion…mormon…mormon…OOOH.

SorosBot April 11, 2012 at 1:36 pm

The Disney Fairy Union has its own medical plan. Just ask Flora, Fauna and Merryweather.

Toomush_Infer April 11, 2012 at 5:49 pm

Only Bondage Fairies should get paid…..that's my position….

Fare la Volpe April 11, 2012 at 1:16 pm

Of course Mitt Romney supports pay equity for women.

He believes men and women should both receive slave wages.

biblioteq_tress April 11, 2012 at 1:16 pm

To be fair, Bain Capital fired women at proportionally equal rates to men. So, yay, girls!

JustPixelz April 11, 2012 at 1:17 pm

To be fair, when Romney was laying people off, he supported equal no-pay for men and women.

Really? Now I wonder what orifice she [or Mittens] pulled that little cracker out of?

freakishlywrong April 11, 2012 at 1:22 pm

When Dubya was hemorrhaging 800,000 jawbs a month, most of those jawbs were man-jawbs. Now that all the mens were laid off, the womens are just catching up, thus, this absurd talking point.

Deportably_Jose April 11, 2012 at 1:45 pm

Not only that, but coming up with that particular figure requries counting the entire month of January 2008, which is pretty funny, since Obama was only president for 10 days of that month.

Also too, ignoring the fact that the biggest source of predominantly-woman teacher-and-healthcare layoffs comes in the form of the wingnut-endorsed austerity measures, but that's actually fine, because Republicans like blaming Obama for the consequences of policies that they agitate for, by saying "weak leadership" over and over again.

sullivanst April 11, 2012 at 2:23 pm

Also too, ignoring the fact that the biggest source of predominantly-woman teacher-and-healthcare layoffs comes in the form of the wingnut-endorsed austerity measures

That would be "teacher" layoffs, there were at no time mass healthcare layoffs. In fact healthcare employment increased throughout the recession (unfortunately the BLS's graphs are not directly linkable, but if you go here and click the dinosaur on the line form "Employment, All Employees" you see the lack of a dip).

Teacher layoffs were caused by wingnut-enacted austerity measures – that President Obama sought directly to prevent or limit with the transfers to states in ARRA.

SorosBot April 11, 2012 at 1:19 pm

Of course Mitt supports equal pay for women; he just thinks that women who do face pay discrimination shouldn't have adequate legal resources to get recompensed for that discrimination. No biggie!

Goonemeritus April 11, 2012 at 1:19 pm

Even Romney's organization can’t keep up with his own Parties conspiratorial positions. If I didn’t think he was a soulless Wall Street vampire I might actually pity him.

mrblifil April 11, 2012 at 1:20 pm

The fair pay issue is somewhat distorted in that large amounts of undeclared income in the form of cash stuffed into G-strings is rarely taken into account.

Chet Kincaid April 11, 2012 at 1:21 pm

There is no "War On Women"!! It's a "Police Action" on women!!

Steverino247 April 11, 2012 at 1:57 pm

By this logic, women should only be paid for "jobs" such as blow jobs and hand jobs.

Hmm. I'd hate to have to start paying for such loving services at this late date, though. Can I just pay you for doing the dishes and mopping the floors so I can pretend you like me enough to give me those other services for free?

There's another election going on across the Atlantic, where French First Lady Carla Bruni, from one of Europe's wealthiest families and who always dresses so chicly, is suddenly just hanging out in sweats and t-shirts and having "Tupperware" parties (I kid you not) to convince women to vote for her husband, who is currently polling abysmally among women. I predict that multimillionairess Ann Romney will soon undergo a similar transformation.

I went on a couple of dates with a man who turned out to be a gun nut and an anti-abortionist (he seemed smart at first), and he had the same job as me. Only he had been doing it for two years, as opposed to my seven years, and he made 30% more.

When I finally saw his work, I was horrified. But he DID have a penis (not that I ever saw it), and apparently that's worth more in the tech world.

If this shit keeps up, he'll be conceding the election in August or September.

HippieEsq April 11, 2012 at 2:47 pm

Gee those stats cited by Mitt/Ms. Saul sure make it seem like it's easier for employers to FIRE woman than their male counterparts. hhmmmmmmm?

BaldarTFlagass April 11, 2012 at 2:51 pm

weejee April 11, 2012 at 3:07 pm

Will it be more than some poaching or hunting out-of-season charge?

Limeylizzie April 11, 2012 at 3:37 pm

Just realised he is a Perujew, Peruvian and Jewish, that has to be against the law in Florida.

John Birf Society April 11, 2012 at 3:00 pm

If women were corporations, they would have rights.

Biel_ze_Bubba April 12, 2012 at 9:21 am

Heck, they'd even be people, my friend!

Antispandex April 11, 2012 at 3:10 pm

It's just a theory, and I am partial to it only because it is mine, but I believe when you have to have a spokesperson look something up, then tell you what it means, and then formulate your respose…well, I know it sounds crazy and unfair…but I just think you may be bullshitting. It's the cynic in me.

Biel_ze_Bubba April 12, 2012 at 9:28 am

Even a panderbot needs data before it can pander properly.

ElPinche April 11, 2012 at 3:16 pm

When Mitt can't answer a simple question, his water carrying tools will respond..wrongly. Is that a Mormon thing?

SkinnyNerd April 11, 2012 at 3:45 pm

Ugh, this guy sounds like my former boss.

Skinnynerd: When am I getting that promotion you promised me?
Asshole: I will get back to you on that.

Warwhatgoodfor April 11, 2012 at 4:00 pm

Well. I don't really like Leadbelly that much, but all the folks working in my kitchen say he was the best. Wait, what?

DahBoner April 11, 2012 at 4:03 pm

If any chick wants to sue her employer for not paying her enough, she should hire a female lawyer. Because for some strange reason, they're cheaper…

That's because they're always taking off early to pick up the kids and the magic underwear from the cleaners…

lochnessmonster April 11, 2012 at 5:02 pm

But aren't the wimunz supposed to be birthing and cookin? Their men should be bringing home the bacon so they can cook it!

Designer_Rants April 11, 2012 at 5:21 pm

Sometimes I feel like I should just take morphine and die….oh, that was the other Ledbetter?…never mind….goodnight, Irene…

Xan April 11, 2012 at 7:10 pm

So the wingnuts decimate the public sector, a huge employer of women, and then blame Obama for women losing jobs. Classic.

labman57 April 11, 2012 at 11:56 pm

Standard Romney retort when asked by an interviewer to state his policy position on an important issue: "Uh, which position would your viewers and listeners like me to take?"

Wile E. Quixote April 12, 2012 at 1:16 am

I heard that for a couple of years Mitt took the missionary position, but I'm not sure it counts because it was in France and you know what they say about the French. "Ze French they are a silly race. Zey fight with their feet and make babies with their face."

aussiefromafar April 12, 2012 at 5:09 am

On all fours pleeeze

Wile E. Quixote April 12, 2012 at 1:14 am

So let's see if I have my math straight. Women account for 92 percent of the jobs lost under Obama, but they get paid 1/3rd less and Obama is half blah and blahs only count for being 3/5ths of a human being so obviously this proves that we need a capital gains tax cut.

Wile E. Quixote April 12, 2012 at 1:20 am

"jobs for women?" Is that one of those swap programs like toys for guns?

SorosBot April 11, 2012 at 2:55 pm

While we menfolk are busy hunting giraffes for the family. And this was the "intellectual" Republican candidate!
