Rick Santorum: ‘Seven Or Eight’ California State Schools Don’t Teach American History

by Liz Colville

don't look at me

This week in Wisconsin, dead horse of the presidential race Rick Santorum decided to tell a crowd that the problem with higher education, once again, is that it is too high. Too curious. Too too. This must be stopped, with more lessons about how America is the best, or was, for a few years (all of them Clinton years). Santorum’s latest method of slandering non-agoraphobic schooling methods is to claim that the entire UC system is anti-American because it does not teach American history, even though it does and so actually isn’t. Santorum’s one saving grace: one of the UC schools doesn’t teach American history … because it is a medical school.

So, add to Santorum’s American locales hate list (on which Los Angeles and New York hold the top positions): ALL OF CALIFORNIA! What has that vast broke desert full of winos done for America lately?

Here is a crappy but ultimately illustrious video of the remarks:

So, Santorum’s idea of citing facts (something that he would know how to do if he had gone to — oh yes, right, he did go to college, snooty pig, AND THEN HE WENT TO “BUSINESS” SCHOOL, AND THEN HE WENT TO “LAW” SCHOOL) is “I was just reading something last night” [on Daily Caller]. That’s fine, but only because it is funny.

Now it is time for some liberally minded Americans to stomp their feet and deign to correct Santorum’s idiotic counting skills:

In fact, of the 10 UC system schools, just one (San Francisco) doesn’t offer American history courses. But that’s because it doesn’t offer any humanities courses at all — it’s a medical school. Meanwhile, Berkeley, Irvine, Davis, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz all offer numerous American history courses. Some even require students to take U.S. history before they can graduate.

Yes, but, says the possessor of three higher education degrees, who has gotten so bafflingly far in life not thanks to education, but to babies, ladies, God and freedom: it doesn’t matter. No one can save [location that is categorically different from the place in which I am currently campaigning]. [Think Progress]

In fairness, Rick, medical schools assume you've completed your liberal arts requirements.

EDIT: Holy crap! I meant that as a joke, and only read the piece after I posted!

prommie April 2, 2012 at 2:12 pm

They say the real history will never get in the books.

OkieDokieDog April 2, 2012 at 2:26 pm

Except the bible book. God created America for the white rich man. The end.

bagofmice April 2, 2012 at 3:51 pm

Real history will never get into Santorum, Caligula excepted.

johnnyzhivago April 2, 2012 at 2:12 pm

Of course they don't teach American history – that's against Sharia law!

I agree. I was all into the hilarious schadenfreude this extended nominating contest involved, until it went all through the looking glass and no republican seems to have noticed.

I'm tired of the insanity. Someone stop the world, I'd like to get off.

anniegetyerfun April 2, 2012 at 2:16 pm

Are they actually running out of manufactured outrage topics? I didn't think that could happen.

Hey, Rick, I'm going to name my first child HUSSEIN, how's that? I love socialism, and Hawaii. Also, dark-skinned men – all of them. There, that should keep you busy for a while.

Gleem McShineys April 2, 2012 at 3:06 pm

Peak outrage already? I thought the santorum fields were limitless!!
Just goes to show you that there ARE limits to how much can be pulled out of your ass

anniegetyerfun April 2, 2012 at 3:25 pm

Trying to enrage the idiot masses about California's medical schools is a real stretch. Surely there's a happy gay family somewhere that they can get jealous of.

Baconzgood April 2, 2012 at 2:16 pm

Well not the "history" that you want. These schools use "Facts" and "memoirs" and "letters" of the people that actually lived at that time in history to write their text books.

Terry April 2, 2012 at 2:16 pm

Has Santorum made his college transcripts public? He talks like a man who flunked a bunch of courses and is a wee bit bitter.

kissawookiee April 2, 2012 at 2:41 pm

Don't you remember that he got "marked down" for being a conservative, like, all the time?

nounverb911 April 2, 2012 at 2:16 pm

Was Santorum "home colleged"?

Terry April 2, 2012 at 2:19 pm

Penn State. That's "home college" with football.

nounverb911 April 2, 2012 at 2:20 pm

Was he one of Sandusky's "Boys"?

prommie April 2, 2012 at 2:33 pm

Hey, Penn State is a prestigious institution, they have a great Phrenology department, they are a world leader in 'ciphering, and have made great strides in the study of phlogiston. And, with the Sandusky story having made Penn State the national symbol of sports pedophilia, (similar to how Duke and Date Rape are inextricably linked) its somehow appropriate that the Frothy Mix went there, to the school where the athletic showers apparently saw lots of santorum.

Deportably_Jose April 2, 2012 at 2:51 pm

Penn State. That Icon of Liberalism.

Unless, of course, you're familiar with LITERALLY any other college or university in Pennsylvania, since even the noteworthy Catholic schools are a tad more left-wing than Penn State is. Atheist Liberal College, it ain't.

Chet Kincaid April 2, 2012 at 4:37 pm

At Atheist Liberal College, a different academic department volunteers to engage in Institutional Illiberalism every semester, so that students can have the valuable experience of protesting for change. Security even brings them box lunches from The Hungry Radical Sandwich Shoppe.

prommie April 2, 2012 at 2:16 pm

The real history involves Jesus Christ coming down from Mount Vernon carrying the Stone tablets on which The Declaration of Independance and the Constitution were written, and all the Founding Fathers, who were Devout Christian Biblical Literalists took the Holy Founding Documents and founded a White Male Christian Nation and there was no sex except for procreation because sex was Wicked and Bad, as it still is. But like I said, the real history never made the books, and none of the schools teach it. You can only find it on Tea Party protest signs.

Terry April 2, 2012 at 2:24 pm

True story. I was recently on the DC Metro sitting near a couple probably each in their late 50's. The man, the apparent world expert on everything, was loudly discussing how he was taking his lovely lady to Mount Vernon. On the Metro. I tried to explain to him that Mount Vernon Square and Mount Vernon were actually two different places, but he was having none of that. He KNEW what he was talking about, but was slightly concerned that the other riders on the train were getting a little bit "ethnic". Usually, I bend over backwards to help visitors as I've been lost and confused in other cities (Tokyo, holy moley). This guy, I just restated that they were different places and wished him luck.

bagofmice April 2, 2012 at 3:58 pm

Dude, I grew up in Mount Vernon, in Washington sans DC. I lived on Capitol hill, both of them.

Seriously, the left coast lacked some imagination back in the founding days.

LastGasp April 2, 2012 at 3:05 pm

The real history is on Tea Party protest signs? Oh, like this one: https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3640/3313864503_1

Of all the negative and true things we could say about the UC system (tuition hikes!?!?) we have this vested creep making up his own. Santourum is America's greatest creative writer!??!

MrFizzy April 2, 2012 at 2:19 pm

I don't think Little Ricky's parents got a bargain on his education – whitey seems a little light on facts and cognitive abilities. Of course you don't have much need for those kinds of things when you're a bible-thumping asswipe.

littlebigdaddy April 2, 2012 at 6:08 pm

Well, he did go to Penn State. Probably good at ice-cream making and ignoring sex abuse (wait, I think he has that one covered).

Baconzgood April 2, 2012 at 2:19 pm

Maybe they don't teach "American History" because it's such a broad subject. Chances are that schools will delve into specific areas of American history indepth, for, you know, THEIR FUCKING AMERICAN HISTORY MAJORS!!!!!!!!

Callyson April 2, 2012 at 2:20 pm

Not only does the UC system teach history, I remember working very hard in my–wait for it–American Intellectual History course at Berkeley.

Asshole.

FakaktaSouth April 2, 2012 at 2:41 pm

Holy Christ that is like the supertrifecta of evil – Snobby snobbist snobbery at Hippie Snob U. (yes hippie snob. If we can have fascist socialism, by GOD we can have snobbie hippies.)

BerkeleyBear April 2, 2012 at 3:59 pm

As a Berkeley history undergrad whose focus was colonial and early American history, I gotta wonder what I was really doing for those 4 years? Maybe I was being brainwashed into thinking I took something like 6 history courses that focused on the US in one way or another (2 seminars, a thesis course, at least 3 substantive time period courses, and I waived out of intro to US history – along with a historic archeology course that focused on the US colonies and plantations, a poli sci course that focused on the US system, and an econ course focused on American policy). Of course, the instructors sometimes acted like the US was a strange foreign object, but that was just because they were strung out grad students.

PubOption April 2, 2012 at 4:23 pm

Are American Intellectuals history? Discuss with particular reference to the Republican Party.

CthuNHu April 2, 2012 at 7:59 pm

Typical Marxist snobbery.

Real America History ain't intellectual.

clblabin April 2, 2012 at 2:20 pm

If he makes too many more gaffes like this, Rick Santorum may jeopardize his chances to become president of the United States of America.

soeoho April 2, 2012 at 2:26 pm

It's OK. He can always go back to koludge. The snob!

boobookitteh April 2, 2012 at 2:20 pm

Well, they should just stop teaching abortion at the medical school and teach American History!

MrFizzy April 2, 2012 at 2:25 pm

I really can't figure out if that makes you a liberal or not. Such a conundrum.

Callyson April 2, 2012 at 2:21 pm

So, add to Santorum’s American locales hate list (on which Los Angeles and New York hold the top positions): ALL OF CALIFORNIA!

Never have I been so proud of my adopted state. And as an LA resident, I get double the hate. I feel so humbled by this honor.

anniegetyerfun April 2, 2012 at 3:29 pm

California is the greatest state, despite some terrible decisions (previous governor). The more Rick hates it, the more I want to move back.

SorosBot April 2, 2012 at 2:21 pm

He's probably just angry that some of those schools teach American history as it actually happened, instead of his preferred versions where America was an empty place without any people who got slaughtered by the white men when they came here, happy Africans volunteered to come over and pick cotton, and every founding father was a devout Christian who made Christianity the official religion of the US in the First Amendment.

Once you've gone old and pedophile, you never..wait..what?

poorgradstudent April 2, 2012 at 2:21 pm

I don't know, I think this shows Santorum is losing his touch. At his prime Santorum would have said all this and THEN accused the schools of instead teaching the history of white oppression starting with Yakob genetically engineering the white race on the isle of Potmos or something.

Sue4466 April 2, 2012 at 2:22 pm

But, wait, doesn't the GOP say education is a local matter? And don't they want to abolish the Department of Education?

So WTF business is it of President Santorum's if California doesn't teach history at all ever? Local school board matter. Just like teaching science in Kansas.

I mean, is it too much to ask for just a little bit of consistency?*

*I know. Yes. Yes it is. Just like it's too much to ask for critical thinking skills amongst the electorate.

boobookitteh April 2, 2012 at 2:22 pm

The Education is Too Damn High.

Jus_Wonderin April 2, 2012 at 2:22 pm

I am not sure the percentage, but a number of students who attend colleges don't retain their belief in History after they graduate.

SheriffRoscoe April 2, 2012 at 2:22 pm

Know what else they don't teach in medical school? Fractions. I tried enrolling in medical school once, but found out they don't teach you how to do fractions so I couldn't go.

SayItWithWookies April 2, 2012 at 2:34 pm

Y'all are unfairly piling on Rick here — see, what he said was "I think it’s seven or eight of the California system of universities don’t even teach an American history course. It’s not even available to be taught."

He's not saying they don't teach any American history courses — he's saying there's one American history course they don't teach — and that, of course, is AH 351, "The Guiding Hand of Jesus in American Statecraft from Evidence Garnered from Homeless Schizophrenics and Snakebit Backwoods Reverends." Free and it gets your fifty thousand college credits — but it's like the American people just don't want to learn.

Zionist schill is installed by delegates and superdelegates having no actual concern at all for the stupid fucking morons who "think" that "they" selected their new puppet.

WonkCynic April 2, 2012 at 3:07 pm

And on the day the dog collars are permanently wrapped around the necks of every one of the stupid fucking morons, they'll be screaming "no fair! I didn't vote to have a dog collar placed
around my stupid moronic neck!"

And Big Brother's most recent schill will reply, "oh, but you did! Over and over and over again, you did! Now, kneel, you stupid fucking moron! Get down with your bad moronic self!"

Where do I sign up!?

Chet Kincaid April 2, 2012 at 4:51 pm

Yes!! The Zionists have been controlling American elections for 236 years!!

MosesInvests April 2, 2012 at 8:17 pm

Yep. It's little known, but George Washington and John Adams secretly traveled to Prague in 1775 to meet with the Elders of Zion and plot the founding of the United States.

GortRay April 2, 2012 at 3:26 pm

OK, I think that''s enough of this turd biscuit. Santorum has taken up way too much of our time and he should be shuffled to the back of the pack until someone comes up with pics of him with Pat Robertson's beef rocket in his mouth or something.

OneYieldRegular April 2, 2012 at 3:30 pm

"We're trying to disconnect Americans from who they are so that they have an understanding of what America should be."

The Santorum campaign in a nutshell.

Barrelhse April 2, 2012 at 3:45 pm

Rick, you ignorant slut. Pandering to the lowest common denominator only makes you look like a fool to the general population. And fuck you, also.

BarackMyWorld April 2, 2012 at 3:55 pm

Yeah. I'm ready for primary season to be over. Yup.

MissTaken April 2, 2012 at 3:59 pm

Why the fuck are there "medical schools" anyway? Everyone knows Real Americans just pray the pain away.

dadanarchist April 2, 2012 at 4:05 pm

This will come as somewhat of a shock to my friend who teaches American history at one of the Cal State Universities.

Steverino247 April 2, 2012 at 4:08 pm

In the history of douchebags, Rick Santorum is a full professor.

irishdave3 April 3, 2012 at 6:42 am

also. too. tennured!

GeorgiaBurning April 2, 2012 at 4:40 pm

Outside of the fact that undergrads are REQUIRED to take some units of American History to get a degree from a Cal State or UC school; Rick should kick our commie butts out of the US after he gets elected. We'll set up a deal on military base rental, just remember how expensive beachfront land can be in San Diego.

anteater April 2, 2012 at 5:00 pm

As a 3rd generation Californian I offer the middle finger of love to this grim weasel.
Stay the fuck out of my state asshole… and you might try a hearty thank you every once and awhile you meathead.

gingerland62 April 3, 2012 at 2:17 am

An educated electorate is not beneficial to the right. You took the words right out of my mouth Ant. Stay the fuck out and shut the fuck up Santorum.

Maman April 2, 2012 at 5:10 pm

I guess it evens out with the number of schools in Mississippi that teach science

gingerland62 April 3, 2012 at 2:18 am

There are schools in Mississippi?

rickmaci April 2, 2012 at 6:29 pm

H. L. Mencken, defined a demagogue as a politician who "will preach doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots." Tricky Ricky, that means you.

ALIVE! April 2, 2012 at 8:58 pm

Well shit. I majored in American history at a U.C. school. Does this mean I never graduated? Do I not even exist????

irishdave3 April 3, 2012 at 6:44 am

A non-person is the precise term.

irishdave3 April 3, 2012 at 6:39 am

Would teaching like, you know ….History be kind of Snobbish?

DahBoner April 3, 2012 at 7:18 am

ttommyunger April 3, 2012 at 8:01 am
