Here is an interesting “nut graf” (JOURNALISM!) in a story from the AP about George Zimmerman, the fellow in Florida whom you may have heard (unless you watch FOX* or read Drudge) is claiming self-defense after shooting an unarmed teenage boy while muttering “fucking coons” under his breath.
Now, suddenly, people are wondering if the 28-year-old Zimmerman is an earnest if somewhat zealous young man who was just looking out for his neighborhood, or a wannabe cop who tried to take justice into his own hands.
Interesting take there, AP! Is he a zealous, wonderful guy, or is he a zealous, wonderful guy? (You’ll note that nowhere in AP’s binary-choice-system is there an option for “fucking racist motherfucker looking to cap some fucking coons.”)
And here’s a little nugget:
Zimmerman, who was captain of the neighborhood watch and licensed to carry a gun, made 46 calls to police since 2004, according to department records.
Every other news source in the known universe is citing 46 calls to the police since 2011. “Since 2004″ would also be strictly accurate, we guess, in that 2011 comes after 2004? Well, there’s just no knowing who’s right.

The timeline leaves out some crucial details. Specifically, that Martin was born black, and remained black throughout his childhood. And that he insisted on being black during the encounter with Zimmerman.

With apologies to Joseph Heller…Anyone who badly wants a license to carry a concealed weapon shouldn't be allowed to have one.
Zimmerman stalked a 17 year old, unarmed kid who had perfectly good reasons to be where he was, shot and killed him after intentionally provoking a confrontation that (as a student of "Criminal Justice") he thought would allow him to walk free due to a set of rules concerning when you are allowed to shoot someone that are simply perverse. (Indeed, he rightly thought would allow him to walk free, or so it appeared at first.) He then told some preposterous and easily refuted lies about having been attacked from behind when he "stepped out of his vehicle to see what street he was on", presumably because an obsessive neighborhood watch person wouldn't know the street names in the gated community he patrolled as his domain, and he was navigating with sonar, in the type of vehicle that comes without transparent windows.
I find it beyond belief that he wasn't driven by racist presuppositions concerning black teenagers. But if (implausibly) evidence came out that convinced me that Zimmerman in fact wasn't driven by racism in addition to other hateful qualities, it really wouldn't change my estimate of his moral venality in the least.
It's the evident racist presumptions of Chief Bill Lee and the others at the police force that trouble me. How could they just send on his merry way someone who was so obviously lying about the "attacked from behind" story, who was clearly stalking Martin from the evidence of their own 911 tapes, who was discouraged from following Martin by their own dispatcher (though I wouldn't call "We don't need you to do that" as exactly telling Zimmerman not to follow – that depends on the tone of voice on the tape, which I haven't been able to bring myself to listen to). How could they have done such a perfunctory investigation, and have failed to have made even the basic inquiries needed to ascertain whether Martin lived in the neighborhood? Etc.
Zimmerman was evidently a hate-filled, morally depraved man. There are such people in the world. They will do terrible things given the occasion. It's the fact that local law enforcement and the Florida legislature, at the behest of the NRA, twisted themselves into pretzels to facilitate the actions of this hate-filled, morally depraved man and to make it reasonable for him to expect he could act out his sheriff fantasies to the point of murdering an unarmed teenager without any consequences that I think should be the focus here. What's in Zimmerman's corrupt soul is a side issue.
The tone of the operator's voice suggested to me that it was pretty clear this was a strong suggestion not to follow the individual, mixed with a tinge of "oh shit, this wackjob is pulling this crap again".

And, of your "91 results", 9 of them were about Trayvon Martin, and the rest were about a baseball player who also happens to be named Trayvon.
And of those 9 results, one was on 3/8, and the rest were all 3/17 or later (including, I suppose, the 5 you have links to).
I don't watch teevee, so I can't say what you might have seen on Fox, but as for your citations offering evidence that Fox has been covering this story "almost every day for the last several weeks", they don't.
He was certainly the best neighbor at calling the police on anyone who had the temerity to be a young black man in his neighborhood! I bet his neighbor Austin Mclendon just thinks the world of Mr. Zimmerman.

Florida law says that Trayvon Martin would have been within his rights to attack, even to kill George Zimmerman, because Trayvon Martin feared for his life, as would anyone facing an armed vigilante.
On the other hand, George Zimmerman got out of his car, tracked down Trayvon Martin and put him in fear of his life with a deadly weapon. This is a felony, no matter what happened afterwards.

There are no explanations for this sort of thing. But Florida seems to be chock full of these sorts of things. I have only set foot in the state twice, but there is no way in hell I would go back there given what a collection of genuine nutcases seem to inhabit that cursed green hell.
