WI Senator Wants Law Saying Single Parents Are Probably Child Abusers

  great legislative proposals

He kind of looks like an evil warlock, even.

Reducing rates of child abuse and neglect is a topic everyone can agree is important. Now, says Wisconsin state Senator Glenn Grothman, let us consult the Ouija board to figure out which entire category of people make up the secret witches behind this evil and make a law telling everyone to hurl poop and screams at them! What is that look, this is how it’s always done, as a Republican. So which lucky group gets to be the demon this time? Gays? Mexicans? Blacks? Homeless polar bears? Public school teachers? People who use the word “football” to refer to “soccer?” The abused children themselves? Let’s check the text of the bill: “In promoting those campaigns and materials, the [Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board] shall emphasize nonmarital parenthood as a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect.” Single parents! Let’s murder them all and end child abuse, forever.

If you don’t want to kill them, since they make up a third of all Wisconsin parents, the state would at least like you to learn the importance of regarding them with suspicion. Here’s more of the bill:

Section 1. 48.982 (2) (g) 2. of the statutes is amended to read:
48.982 (2) (g) 2. Promote statewide educational and public awareness campaigns and materials for the purpose of developing public awareness of the problems of child abuse and neglect. In promoting those campaigns and materials, the board shall emphasize nonmarital parenthood as a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect.

Section 2. 48.982 (2) (g) 4. of the statutes is amended to read:
48.982 (2) (g) 4. Disseminate information about the problems of and methods of preventing child abuse and neglect to the public and to organizations concerned with those problems. In disseminating that information, the board shall emphasize nonmarital parenthood as a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect.

"Calling Single Parents a Bunch of Child Abusers"
If a child has two parents doesn't that double their chances of being abused?

    1. poncho_pilot

i think those are the Casino rules. but you have to decide that at the start of the hand.

also, if you get two of the same parent they be can split into two sets of parents, both of whom can hit you.

    2. portlandpatti

I can NOT believe that there is someone so ignorant sitting in a Seat of Government where important decisions are made. Good God,!!! This is the most ludicris thing I have ever heard !!!!!!!

    1. comrad_darkness

You're implying that cutting funding for prenatal, postnatal care and school lunches for those millions of impoverished American kids might be child abuse? What are you, some kind of loaves and fishes Jesus freak?

    2. sewollef

"The only child abusers here all have an [R] after their names."

Would that be Retard or Republican?

      Kind of Redundant I know.

  2. imissopus

Between single moms and poor people who use food stamps and take welfare payments, is there anyone in this country conservatives don't want to publicly mock and scorn? Besides really rich people and closeted GOP legislators, of course.

  3. Fare la Volpe

Speaking as someone whose senior Bachelor's thesis was actually on contributing factors to child abuse and neglect, I believe I have some authority to tell the honorable gentleman from Wisconsin to violently fuck himself.

    1. Crank_Tango

Yes, but what expertise do you possess in violent badger auto-penetration?

      On second thought, I don't think I wanna know…

Speaking as someone who was raised by a single mother in Wisconsin, Fuck you, Senator Greasy.

    1. noodlesalad

Abstinence! Which means, for white male Republican state representatives, crystal meth and rent boys.

    2. comrad_darkness

No no no, you miss the whole point. The point is to make the mouth breathers feel superior about themselves by being given a license to mock an entire new class deemed by the government to be lower than themselves. Solving problems is what liberal socialist losers try to do. This isn't intended to solve a problem. It does exactly as intended: lay blame.

  4. RadioCualquier

I know where there is at least $9 million being wasted that could help in implementing this perfectly sane legislation.

  5. noodlesalad

By this logic, we should re-legalize polygamy. What could be safer than having a hundred moms and a dad who can provide for all of them (maybe with a little help from food stamps). Something tells me Representative Grossdude would be more than pleased to see that happen.

    1. Dudleydidwrong

I see Mitt jumping up and down, waving his hand violently and screaming "Yes!" "Yes!" like the smart little bastard in your fourth grade class who was always jumping up and waving his hand. Mormons will be behind you 100% but santorum will be behind them.

  6. Barrelhse

Then they came for the single parents, and I said "Enough is E-fucking-nough, you shit for brains assholes!"

and little fucking Tripp better watch his ass.

I happen to know a Canadian man who would probably marry you entirely based on your ability to randomly quote The Simpsons.

  7. Doktor Zoom

While he's at it, he might want to look at the creative way that a Florida congregation is helping their pastor, who was convicted of molesting a 15 year old girl. Seeing as how he now has a court order barring him from “unsupervised contact with children under 18 years old,” the congregation voted to Do Something:

They've voted to not allow children to attend church services.

Whose turn is it now? Arizona's, Texas's, or South Carolina's?

    1. Doktor Zoom

Meant to also say, too: Actually, if fewer children were dragged unwillingly to church services, that actually might improve our sad sick world, so maybe they're on to something without quite knowing why.

    2. Loaded_Pants

Man, that's one fucked up congregation. But, then again, almost all congregations are fucked up. It's like the shit that went down with Eddie Long. They have so much faith & need their church/pastor fix so bad &, like any good addict, are willing to forgive any crime that their dealer commits.

    3. tessiee

"Seeing as how he now has a court order barring him from “unsupervised contact with children under 18 years old,” the congregation voted to Do Something:

WTH?? What, was he molesting the little shits during ACTUAL CHURCH SERVICES?

  8. Joshua Norton

Attention parents. Hide your children from people like this immediately. When they start carrying about weird tales of "child abuse" it usually means they have a few hard drives full of kiddy porn and a windowless van.

  9. CapnFatback

This sounds like a ridiculous and far-fetched stipulation, but in Wisconsin, all wedding rings act as mini-shock collars that are triggered simply by the neural activity that occurs when parents think about abusing their children.

See? I mean, if that ring thing weren't the case, this legislation would be ludicrous.

  10. Blueb4sunrise

So they changed 'Promote' to ' Disseminate '. De-semenate?

As a personal side note: I was mostly raised by a single mom who got rid of a drunken, abusive, worthless shit.
Love ya dad, may you be rotting in some santorum hell.

On second thought, here I am commenting on Wonkette, so maybe I'm not a good example.

    1. Fare la Volpe

      Oh psh!

I was raised by two supportive, happily married suburbanites, and look how I turned out.

Also, cheers for your mom. It takes a lot of lady balls to do what she did.

      1. Blueb4sunrise

        Yikes!

Yeah, this was back in medieval times too. So she deserved the props. Eventually shacked up with a much nicer man too.

      2. comrad_darkness

I'll raise one to your momma too. May they all be as strong.

I'll take the middle ground, raised by medium suburbanites, and yet here we all are, sharing the happiness of snark.

  11. marinmaven

I get it. Both Clinton and Obama were raised by single moms only to wildly successful enough to beat the GOP in general elections to become president.

They demonize single mothers and then wonder why women chose to abort pregnancies to avoid the becoming the evil and unworthy single mother. Bah!

I happen to know a lot of "good, Christian, nuclear families" who abused and neglected their children over the years. So there is that.

  12. Doktor Zoom

You know, I posted this little story yesterday during the Primary From Hell thread, but it really fits far better here, so if the Wonketariat doesn't object to a bit of repetition, I'd just like to share this once more:

So, Tuesday afternoon, I'm reviewing files at my temp job at Family Court Services, and in a custody modification petition, one of the reasons that Dad gives for why he should have primary custody of the kiddos is that Mom "has allowed [the 12 year old daughter] to maintain a Facebook account." Yep, apparently the guy thinks that's prima facie evidence of poor parenting. (Also damning, Mom has a boyfriend who "sleeps over" at her house, and she "regularly exposes" the chirren to cigarette smoke) This is the sort of stupid mundane shit people drag into court to try to make each other look bad.

And then I'm also checking the parties' criminal histories, which is when I find that Dad has a 2001 conviction for Child Enticement.

So, yeah, I guess he actually would have some special insight into the risks that a Facebook account might pose for kids.

(Note to Senator Grothman: Dad in this case has re-married, so he's in one of those blessed 2-parent households. That makes him the Good Guy in this story, I guess)

    1. Designer_Rants

What, pray tell, is "Child Enticement"? Actually if it's anything like Stranger Danger, offering little kids candy, windowless van type of thing, then let's just leave it at that.

    2. valthemus

Catholic Charities would rather close its doors than allow a same-sex couple to adopt a child. Now that they have the free time, do you think they'll do anything to help fix fucked up straight couples who can become fucked up parents without anyone's approval?

    3. Jukesgrrl

Jesus. I can't get a date on Saturday night, but a felon child abuser with little regard for his own children's welfare and a hysterical grudge against their mother can get a second wife?

Not that I really care about getting a date on Saturday night. I have a leftover Wonket Friday night thread with a start on 2,000 comments.

  13. C_R_Eature

I'm finding this post surprisingly easy to break furniture to.
My only regret is that at least some of it isn't over the head of Senator Glenn Grothman.

      1. C_R_Eature

        I'll be right over.

We will need to pile the shattered fragments outside and set them on fire afterwards, laugh, howl and drink.

I know of a family that had a single mother, and then she remarried a cop, who proceeded to repeatedly rape the children. But he was a Republican cop, so those little girls were asking for it, I'm sure.

      1. Jukesgrrl

If not, I'm sure they can console themselves with alcohol and drug abuse, clinical depression, other facets of PTSD, and/or the hideous future boyfriends they'll choose. Seriously, let's hope they were blessed with a really great therapist and a responsive court system.

        1. Dashboard Buddha

“a responsive court system.”We've moved from a simple blessing to a full-blown miracle, then?—

        2. heathenette

What is this “responsive court system” you speek of? Right now I’m trying figure out how to help some kids when a “responsive court system” is protecting the perp, who works for them. Any suggestions?…LEGAL suggestions?

Thanks, iburl. That's the sort of thing i count on my fellow wonketteers to report so we all don't succumb to the gravest sin of all: despair.

The Urinal-Stuntinel isn't worth much besides bird cage liner material: They're deluded enough to try the NYT access limit and pay wall crap for hack writing. This particular cracker is from West Bend and is evidently hell bent on making a name for himself in the senate. In republican circles, making a name for yourself is about the same as making an ass of yourself. Old cracker needs to sober up and retire and go fishing or something besides be a pest for jeebus.

      1. horsedreamer_1

Dave Umhoefer & his PolitiFact Posse will prove beyond any shadow's doubt that Grothman's claim is above reproach.

        Mark it.

  18. Loaded_Pants

You know, I'm not an expert like someone who's actually done research on child abuse & neglect nor a genius Senator from Wisconsin. I don't have a huge social circle but when I think of most of the people I know who were abused/neglected as children, they came from 2-parent heterosexual households with a strong emphasis on good Christian values like punishments from the Old Testament.

  19. BarackMyWorld

OT: Rachel Maddow's on fire right now with statistical proof that Republicans are getting nuttier and Democrats aren't.

    1. Jukesgrrl

Wasn't that great?! Later, I loved the Bloomberg News chart she highlighted that said $1,000 invested in the stock market during Republican presidential administrations starting with Nixon would now be worth around $2,000. Whereas, $1,000 invested the same way during Democratic presidential administrations starting with Kennedy would be worth almost $10,000 today. Anyone who claims Republicans are good for the economy should have this chart tattooed on their chests.

      1. MilwaukeeKent

I must have seen the same chart in a blog or something. The contrast was astounding, literally a geometric factor of ten in terms of how business does under Democratic versus Republican administrations. all evidence is the GOP isn't fit to govern except during good times — and then their only evolutionary purpose is to turn good times bad.

  20. WhatTheHeck

Lemme see. God the father (single) fathered a son. Left the mother of his son to explain it to her husband, who apparently is not important to the story.
    When did the abuse start?

Just the first three names of children I found in a quick bit of googling–killed by parents in Good Christian Families, applying "the rod of correction," because the Bible told them to tame their unruly children.

Don't worry, you can find more.

    1. not that Dewey

Sure, but in theory, godless people are more deserving of public scorn, because they have no non-materialistic basis for their code of ethics, unlike god-fearing xians, who will be easily forgiven for anything they do wrong. See?

      1. Chichikovovich

Of all the bad arguments that the Fundies give (and not just fundies, I know a couple of otherwise sensible non-crazy non-fundie Christians who make this argument all the time) is the "how can you be moral if there's nothing deeper justifying your evaluations of right and wrong"?

Well, when I read stories like those Dr. Zoom gives, I gladly say – those murdering parents and the sadistic fundies who wrote the book guiding them are immoral, evil people. Hitler was evil. The Argentine torturers in the dirty war were evil, immoral people. So the Christian asks: how can you say that? It's just your opinion.

I reply: what? You think they're not evil? That's crazy! I've never been surer of anything in my life. And if you think it can't be justified unless you add "Oh, and God says so too" I wonder about you.

Really, Plato explained this dialectic with complete clarity in the Euthyphro. I hate that we keep having to refight this battle with these morons.
Is it Evil because the Gods hate it? So if God started loving it would it stop being evil? You say: no – God hates it because it's evil. OK, if it's already evil, then I'm right. Eliminate the middle-man, I say.

        1. not that Dewey

No shit. Humanism is the means and the end. It may sound tautological, but there is no other reason to treat people with humanity and respect than the good that comes from treating people with humanity and respect.

We affirm that moral values derive their source from human experience. Ethics is autonomous and situational needing no theological or ideological sanction. Ethics stems from human need and interest. To deny this distorts the whole basis of life. Human life has meaning because we create and develop our futures. Happiness and the creative realization of human needs and desires, individually and in shared enjoyment, are continuous themes of humanism. We strive for the good life, here and now. The goal is to pursue life's enrichment despite debasing forces of vulgarization, commercialization, and dehumanization.

          -The Humanist Manifesto II

          1. fuflans

i occasionally forget that attention to human achievements is far more important than attention to human attempts to understand an unknowable deity.

thank you and thank god i went to a secular university.

        2. tessiee

I'm no expert, but aren't there verses in the actual bible where God not only condones murder, but actually smites people for killing the bad guys of a given moment with insufficient thoroughness and zeal?

          1. Chichikovovich

Yes, there is an awful lot of that. For examples, there's a websitehttp://www.evilbible.com/That collects a lot of the really shocking things God is said to do or commands or permits in the bible: massive genocide, slavery, murder, etc.Not that there is much new on the webpage – this stuff has been written about for hundreds of years, at least since the days when David Hume, Diderot and Voltaire were writing their skeptical essays on religion. —

    2. fuflans

Good old Zimmie, from Hibbing, Minnesota, the town where people take government assistance while berating the government for giving it to them and electing a representative who votes against the programs in the name of cutting government spending.

“'I don't demand that the government does this for me. I don't feel like I need the government,' said Ki Gulbranson, who counts on an earned-income tax credit and has signed up his children for free meals at school." In the town he's from, residents get on average $1 in federal assistance for every $4 they earn.

      Holy Crap!

Grothman believes the kindergarten program for 4-year-olds should be defunded by Governor Scott Walker because any academic benefits disappear by the fourth grade, and the program is used by school districts to pad their budgets to get more state aid.

Grothman has argued that Martin Luther King Jr. Day should not be a work holiday, calling the day off "an insult to all the other taxpayers around the state". He has expressed doubts that "state workers would be 'checking out DVDs or reading books' about King and would probably just be out shopping or watching television instead."[8] He released a statement opposing a Kwanzaa holiday, stating that we should "treat Kwanzaa with the contempt it deserves before it becomes a permanent part of our culture."

He is a co-sponsor of Senate Bill 19 (2011), which removes the requirement of mandatory disinfection of groundwater in municipal water systems, a requirement that was imposed in reaction to a Cryptosporidium outbreak in 1993, which killed at least 104 citizens of Milwaukee, and sickened thousands of others

      Pro-life, indeed.

      1. anniegetyerfun

BTW, can we forward a motion emphasizing that Republicans are an especially and particularly stupid and dull subset of the Americna population?

    1. Biel_ze_Bubba

If he did that, he might find that child abuse correlates with far-right Xtard parents.
And I'll bet the farm it's more prevalent among the fucktards who vote for him.

  28. Neoyorquino

Since Grothman is cool with baseless attributions and assumptions . . . after looking at his photo, let me just say: nice Pedo-smile™.

  29. Mumbletypeg

Someone please tell me this guy has a man-crush on his preachy-keen idol Rick Santorum, and is trying to get Creamcup's attention with this slam on single parents. What other reason would anyone with a boatload of issues facing his constituency isolate the one issue that hasn't been relevant in umpteen years, other than to emulate the ultimate diaper-soiling public figure who thinks the nation's problems can be solved with wedding bells and hetero-supremacy?

  30. Negropolis

It's like a month by month plan to systematically alienate every voter in America. Eventually the GOP leadership will try to enact legislation so only male white land/business owners (the only ones they haven't pissed off) will be able to vote and their plan to take us back to the 1800s will be complete.

Wait, I forgot… didn't John Stossel already write about how only certain people ought to be allowed to vote? They're showing their hand…

  34. Toomush_Infer

So do they insert these nutty rule changes based on some national elephant strategy to pander to the slightly less than insane camp followers who nevertheless have perceived that the economy is better than they hoped, or are these shitfaced losers doing it on their own?….. btw, the only child abuse in all my vast relative family occurred in a fundamental Baptist two-parent family, where the parents of the father also lived in and participated in the sick, fucking patriarchal craziness…

    1. tessiee

Not to make light of a bad situation, but I had a friend who grew up in a household where abuse (including sexual abuse) went on for years, in several different combinations of people. He wondered, "Did they ever bump into each other in the hallway at night?"

  35. owhatever

This particularly applies to those kids whose fathers were killed in Afghanistan and Iraq, leaving those abusive mommies free to put their kids on the streets dealing drugs.

Curves for Women Legislator of the Year Award 2003? You mean that exercise chain dedicated to making us ladiez more healthy and attractive is handing out awards to women-hating wingnut Republicans?? Say it ain't so!

So, if you're a single mother whose boyfriend abuses your child, you can make it all better by marrying the creep?!?

Aw, come on…someone post how after Romney spent 4 million in MI, he gets the same number of delegates as Rick Santorum so we can point and laugh…PLEEEEASE!

Grothman is probably the third biggest force for all the garbage that's been put on Wisconsin, after Walker and the Fitzgerald thug who heads the senate. A smug prig with one of the safest seats, he calmly spews this kind of thing on a regular basis, why not insult a third of the families in the state? They have a mandate after all, these guys. They won it all in 2010. He looks like he came from a generation that still reads newspapers, so you'd think he'd pick one up now and then. If he read them for only a week maybe he'd figure out there isn't just one cause, one situation or even a more likely one for child abuse or neglect. But no, he's got to demonize some group, because it makes the other shit kickers feel better about themselves and more likely to vote for him.

Oh crap…. I'm one of those… you know, one of those who call it….. Football.

It's ok, I'll take take my punishment. It's just like my wife says to me from time to time , "it's a fine line between the English and the ghey".

I think she means it in a supportive kind of way.

Hey there all you wives suffering from domestic abuse – don't you dare seek a divorce, because the presence of that drunken behemoth of a husband is the only thing keeping you from beating up your kids!

Alan Colmes interviewed Grothman last night. Grothman spent most of the interview talking about how single mothers get pregnant on purpose for the government handouts (you know, because they live like royalty on welfare and food stamps). He also said that back in the 1950s and '60s, you didn't see many kids born out of wedlock because it was a mark of shame and humiliation. So, basically, this has nothing to do with any so-called statistics on abuse and everything to do with stigmatizing and demonizing single mothers. It's just another initiative from a pernicious, woman-hating right wingnut designed to turn back the clock several decades (if not centuries).

I usually stay out of politics, but this idiot takes the cake! Senator please tell me just how you came to this conclusion. I would also like to know just how you came to be elected with such an ignorant ideology. You have, if nothing else proven that light has a much higher speed than sound. You looked like a quasi-intelligent person until I heard the noise from your gums flapping in the breeze. People with such unrealistic ideas as this should never be able to sit in public office. You should hide your face in shame, better still resign your position, and perhaps take some of the other dim wits with you when you go.
