NYPD Trained Police Force With Endlessly Looping Anti-Muslim Film

two middle fingers up

A terrible documentary film called “The Third Jihad,” allegedly bestowed upon the New York Police Department by someone at the Department of Homeland Security, was used to “train” new policepersons, was apparently put “on a continuous loop” at NYPD HQ, and was viewed by nearly 1,500 officers in total during its run, which began in 2010. The film was created by the Clarion Fund, which put out another awful anti-Muslim film called “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West” prior to the 2008 election. The new one is filled with similarly violent imagery like deadly shootings and car bombs, and depicts an Islamic flag flying at the White House. “This is the true agenda of much of Islam in America,” a voiceover says. “A strategy to infiltrate and dominate America.”

The Village Voice was the first to break the news of the film last year, after which an NYPD spokesperson denied that the film had been used (or viewed) as widely as claimed, and added the film was eventually “reviewed” and found to be “inappropriate” for training purposes.

Now, police documents show that the film was actually shown “on a continuous loop” for as long as a year.

Of course, the Clarion Fund sounds like something that would be connected to Newt Gingrich, and it kind of is. Gingrich’s big new super PAC donor, the casino fat cat Sheldon Adelson, has also supported the Clarion Fund. Clarion doesn’t often rake in that much cash, but the New York Times found that in 2008, the year “Obsession” was released, the fund’s cash jumped to more than $18 million from the more typical $1 million or so it gathers annually.

The film is full of fear-mongering narration, such as:

Americans are being told that many of the mainstream Muslim groups are also moderate, when in fact if you look a little closer, you’ll see a very different reality. One of their primary tactics is deception.

How the video got to the NYPD and why it was authorized, and then downplayed, is now in question. The Times reports that someone from the DHS “handed” the DVD to someone in the NYPD at the start of 2010. But “a Department of Homeland Security spokesman said it was never used in its curriculum, and might have come from a contractor.”

Contractors. Of course. Those theoretically good-for-the-economy but usually good-for-NOTHING-AT-ALL rebels. [New York Times via Talking Points Memo]

This is different from Rethuglicans… how?

Haven't heard from him, but his housemate was posting on Facebook last night, so they have cable at least.

Heard from him yet? I hope he's OK. One of the commenters here is from the area and she said after the storm it looked like her trees had been fighting with each other.

Let me know if you can, toots.

"Their primary tactics is deception. Deception and fear. Their two primary tactics are deception, fear, and a fanatical devotion to the caliphate. Three! Wait, okay… Among their primary tactics is the following…"

I'm checking to see if Barry is wearing his Islamic flag pin tonight at the SOTU address.

Just replace that Islam flag with a confederate flag donning golden dollar signs and the words Muslim or Islam with "right wing christians" and voilà, inaccuracies corrected.

Years ago, we had an incompetent English teacher at the alt-ed where I taught. Unfortunately we had to share a room. One of classes she "taught" was Literature in the Movies (or something like it). Things went along ok at first and actually got to watch some good films while I graded papers during my break. However, the thought the class wasn't edgy enough so she showed the "Patriot" with Mel Gibson. Hmmmm, I didn't know that was a book first. Then…then she showed "American History X" What the everloving fuck? It took me 1/10th of one second to know that this was hardly an appropriate movie for our students (maybe…maybe in a social studies class…with parental permission). But, as I said, she was incompetent and probably masturbated repeatedly to the prison rape scene.

Given that, it took the NYPD a year to figure out their movie was in appropriate?

    1. memzilla

No, it took a year for it to be exposed, and about five seconds for the NYPD to say that it was shocked, shocked I say. But you already knew that.

      1. Dashboard Buddha

huh…I wonder why that got deleted. I accidentally double posted it when my browser hung up…maybe we deleted the two at the same time?

Intense Debate has never been the same since we started liveblogging the Intense Republiklan Debates.

The fact that it lasted long enough for someone else to read and post a response to it might tend to indicate that you initiated the action to delete it. Usually when the adminbot zots your comment, it happens right away. Instead of your comment, you see "This yadayadayada administrator."

And exactly whose obsession are we talking about here?

Yes. He and Ralph Lipshitz Lauren used to sell ties together at the Brooks Brothers on Madison Avenue.

You beat me to it! I do remember when all the gay guys in SF loved to wear "Charlie."

      And when Opium came out.

My wife still likes Obsession. Like I could afford it…

I still wear the Opium in the Winter mostly. I love it. Charlie? Not so much. Chanel No.5 is good in the Spring.

Raise your hand if you can't see the humor in a wing nut group naming a movie about mooslims "Obsession"?
    (crickets chirping)

    I didn't think so….

I know….all those pork jokes. I feel that I've let all of you down. But honestly I was hanging out with a friend of mine the night before and I was probally sleeping one off at that time.

But “a Department of Homeland Security spokesman said it was never used in its curriculum, and might have come from a contractor.”

Well then, nothing to see, just another known unknown, move along.

    Also, Fuck Bloomberg.

This is, the film claims, “the 1,400-year war.”

Screw you, Western European infidels, and your teeny-tiny 100-years war!

  13. Callyson

"After it was over, I was thinking, 'What was that?' " said a cop who saw the movie at a training facility used by the department in Coney Island. "It was so ridiculously one-sided. It just made Muslims look like the enemy. It was straight propaganda."
I know the feeling. Replace "Muslims" with "Obama" and you've summarized the Republican presidential primary.

  14. BaldarTFlagass

They shortened up the name from the original:
“Obsession: A Bunch of Crazed Zionist Delusions About This Fantastic Hallucination of Radical Islam’s War Against the West”

  15. spends2much

But we've got to watch it… if Mooslims take over, they'll outlaw birth control, legalize discrimination against gheyz, and push the whole "women should serve their husbands" ethos.

To sum up: Every GOP candidate currently running is a dangerous Mooslim.

  16. Baconzgood

The Third Jihad? Fucking Hollywood can't come up with anything original anymore, all they do is regurgitate fucking sequels over and over again and again.

      1. MittBorg

Is that from the Victoria's Secret show?

Oh, you said VC. Wut the hell are VC angels? The only "angels" I;ve ever seen are them nekky gals on the catwalk modelling VS shit with wings and everything.

  17. Mumbletypeg

Fearmongering assholes like these remind me that it's entirely plausible, after all, to *get* why and how things like the Inquisition could happen. One entity of hate picks up where the other leaves off.
And yet the "chosen" mantle our Fine Christian[ized] national[istic] security forces operate under was co-opted from a distant-aged account of oft-oppressed tribesfolk somehow chosen, in no uncertain terms, to set themselves apart as an example.
And over and over throughout their history they screwed up, then started over. Never to learn from mistakes until super-Jesus arrives to bail them out.
Up until that last bit, I'm prone to think more truth's found in the Bible than usually taken for granted. But instead of making things better since someone's Messiah message got scattered and followers scarred, it's just gotten worse.
Not that the gospel writers are entirely to blame though. The poets need a nose-tweaking too. "Hate" springs eternal — and the liars perpetuating their flagrant loathing for their fellow man to our detriment continue to prove this.

Americans are being told that many of the mainstream Muslim groups are also moderate, when in fact if you look a little closer, you’ll see a very different reality. One of their primary tactics is deception.

They forgot the subtitle: "Protocols of the Ayatollahs of Mecca"

Seriously, though, how is this any different than anti-Semititic innuendo?

    1. MosesInvests

Or any different from anti-Catholic innuendo? It's actually very close to Know-Nothing propaganda from the mid-19th century, which talked a lot about the imposition of Canon Law. Bigots will be bigots, and unfortunately, Jews aren't any more immune to bigotry than any other people in the world.

    2. GOPCrusher

Whenever I get one of these in my e-mailbox, I replace the word Muslim with Xtians and send it back. You can hear the heads exploding.

    3. Swampgas_Man

Seriously, though, how is this any different than anti-Semititic innuendo?

      Mooslims have fourskins.

  19. BaldarTFlagass

I bet the cop shops in the large metro areas throughout the Middle East have had endless loops of "El Cid" playing since about 2001.

        1. MittBorg

I dunno, DBB. The crazies are pretty much turning off 3/4 of the American people now, and they need at least 50%+1 to hold on to power. We might be seeing the birf of a new Repuglycan Party, one that's better at hiding teh slimy philosophies underlying their cleaned-up facade. No?

  20. Lionel[redacted]Esq

Perhaps the greatest plan of the Islamist is to get us to play boring, obnoxious paranoid slash fic over and over again until our heads explode?

  21. dadanarchist

Let me guess – all the Muslims in the film speak like they do on South Park: "Dirka dirka mohammed jihad"

  22. Negropolis

Hell, Dearborn doesn't even have a Muslim mayor (they got them a stereotypical big, ole Irish Catholic one), and they are supposed to be plotting to take over America? Ha! You know who we should be concerned with? The crazy fuckers who have actually taken over this nation's policy-making for the last, oh, 30 years. An Islamic takeover would actually be an improvement…the food and the architecture would be better, no doubt.

BTW, I've been calling for it since it was created, but DHS needs to be disbanded. Their work needs to be returned, but this time to a single pre-existing department. There can be no good that comes out of a department named "Homeland" anything. Never. And I said it the day that it was founded.

  23. ttommyunger

Reminds me of my cop days in KCMo in the early and mid-sixties when groups like the ones behind this film were distributing hate brochures and pamphlets about civil rights activists exposing their arrest records, homosexual activities, etc. Past is prologue, sadly.
