Why Can't Newt Gingrich Be More Like His New Hampshire Staff?

We have always pictured Newt Gingrich's campaign staff as a pinch-faced army of severe trolls marching around in single file wearing stiff matching albino wigs like their leader, but his New Hampshire team at least is merely a club of plump singing elves who roll around on the floor when they are excited. Careful not to piddle on the carpet! Aw. They seem so earnest and charming and energized -- probably the most potent campaign ad we have seen yet to remind us that Newt Gingrich is absolutely none of those things.

Take for example this randomly chosen very awful thing that humorless, cruel Newt Gingrich said in 1980 about his first wife, from some depressing thing we just saw on CNN:  

Leonard H. "Kip" Carter, a former close Gingrich friend, backed the contention that it was Newt Gingrich who wanted the divorce.

"He (Gingrich) said, 'You know and I know that she's not young enough or pretty enough to be the wife of a president,' " Carter, who now lives in South Carolina, told CNN recently, relating the conversation he had with Gingrich the day Gingrich revealed he was filing for divorce. Carter served as treasurer of Gingrich's first congressional campaigns.

Carter, who was a fellow history professor when Gingrich taught at West Georgia College in Carrollton, said he broke off his friendship with Newt Gingrich because of the congressman's treatment of his wife during the divorce.
