Nancy Pelosi Shamelessly Tries To Cash In On Occupy Wall Street

by Kirsten Boyd Johnson  1:25 pm November 22, 2011

To the tepid supporter of the movement go the spoils!

The Democratic Party is still not entirely sure what to do with this “Occupy Wall Street” stuff beyond allowing for a few cautious statements from one or another “liberal” member of Congress let out of the pen for a few minutes to say something to the effect of “it’s possible people might be somewhat fed up with a few things going on these days, like being poor despite working three jobs, maybe?” while studiously avoiding mention of the influence of Wall Street oligarchs in government or the actual uprising of thousands of angry Americans or the vicious police brutality against them. (Bernie Sanders and Dennis Kucinich are the only real exceptions.) But surely, OWS must be also be “good for something,” politically speaking, besides embarrassing the Democrats into looking like a bunch of establishment ninnies as beholden to the incessant demands of kleptocrats as the Republicans? Nancy Pelosi has an idea about that! It’s “fundraising,” to make sure the DCCC doesn’t miss out on any of the outrage dollars that might flow forth after a recent memo surfaced showing nervous conservatives plotting to discredit OWS leaders. She can’t quite bring herself to actually soil her email plea with the words “Occupy Wall Street,” though, why is that?

A few days ago MSNBC’s Chris Hayes unearthed a memo from Washington lobbying firm CLGC authored in part by a couple of John Boehner’s former devil minions making an offer to the American Bankers’ Association to conduct oppo research on movement leaders. It is notable not for its droll plan but for its hysterical, twitchy analysis that OWS “has the potential to have very long-lasting political, policy and financial impacts on the companies in the center of the bullseye.” Glad you think so!

So today we found the following spam from Nancy Pelosi clogging our inbox:

We have the smoking gun.

If you need further proof that Congressional Republicans are putting big Wall Street banks before middle class families, look no further than an explosive memo prepared by former John Boehner staffers-turned-banking lobbyists.

This just-leaked memo details an $850,000 “message war” plan to attack and discredit grassroots citizen movements working to hold special interests accountable.

With just days left until the FEC deadline, we must have a powerful showing to demonstrate our strength and stand up to the Republican assault on hardworking Americans.

Can we count on your support?

Help us beat the Republicans’ $850,000 “message war” plan. Contribute $3 or more today and your generous support will be matched dollar-for-dollar by House Democrats.

Hm, so if “grassroots citizen movements” are the ones doing the “work” of trying to hold special interests accountable, shouldn’t they be the ones who deserve your three dollars? Isn’t that the basic premise of remuneration, that the money should go to the one who is laboring? Ha ha, no, this is America, where the fruit of a movement’s toils belongs to someone else, like Nancy Pelosi. [MSNBC/DCCC Spam List]

Yea! Tea Party… saving you money at the government level!

Where did all those fucking morans go? (Not that I miss 'em)

Baconzgood November 22, 2011 at 2:03 pm

I ran into one on Saturday at our local OWS tent city. I gotta give it up for the guy. Walking into the lion's den like that. It was funny because he started waxing to these three guys about the constitution and one ripped him a new ass hole. The tea party dude said "Well your wrong about the constitution" to wit the man FUCKING PULLED OUT AN ACLU LAWYER'S CARD, and said "I'm pretty sure passing the bar gives me a little more insight than you". IT WAS FUCKING AWSOME!

DaRooster November 22, 2011 at 2:20 pm

Hip-Hp Hooray!

Stupid fuckers… they don't like all them facts.

Baconzgood November 22, 2011 at 2:22 pm

On of the guys standing around listening to the tea bagger yelled "OHHHHHHHH SNAP! My man said 'take that shit back to Glenn Beck' " when the lawyer handed him his card.

Chichikovovich November 22, 2011 at 2:24 pm

Well, sure, that's what it would say in one of those ACLU constitutions. Where it says you're not ever allowed to say "Merry Christmas" and parents are forced to let their eight year old kids watch gay bondage porn in school. I'm talking about the real constitution, written by Christian patriots like Lionel Jefferson, Franklin Mint, Paul Bunyan and George Washington DC.

Maybe "Occupy Wall Street" just happens to be her "safe" word, and she's not quite finished yet, if you know what I mean.

"No! Don't fund THEIR message war, send your money HERE to help fund OUR message war!"

SorosBot November 22, 2011 at 1:33 pm

From the article:

"According to the memo, if Democrats embrace OWS, “This would mean more than just short-term political discomfort for Wall Street. … It has the potential to have very long-lasting political, policy and financial impacts on the companies in the center of the bullseye.”

The memo also suggests that Democratic victories in 2012 should not be the ABA’s biggest concern. “… (T)he bigger concern,” the memo says, “should be that Republicans will no longer defend Wall Street companies.”"

So the Wall Street scum really are afraid about losing some of their power and money. Good.

DaRooster November 22, 2011 at 2:25 pm

Wear the ring…

Chichikovovich November 22, 2011 at 2:16 pm

Yeah, can we at least alternate that ad with some others, for variety? I'll betcha the Trucknutz people would be interested.

Baconzgood November 22, 2011 at 2:20 pm

I clicked on it once not noticing it was an advertisment. Now every left wing site I go to it sits there mocking me.

Chichikovovich November 22, 2011 at 2:41 pm

I clicked on it out of curiosity, and as I mentioned before, it really is a masterpiece of the corporate adspeak genre. Page after page of overwritten blather, conveying the idea that something really bad is just over the broadband horizon, but this proposal and the companies associated with it will avoid that really bad thing, and make my life a million times better, in some way that has to do with broadband. So I should be absolutely in favor of this proposal and these companies.

But however many times I read it, it was simply impossible to find out what the proposal is. (Somebody on an earlier thread filled me in. Something to do with cellphones horning in on some major slice of the spectrum.) I mean, we all come across these things, and reading them can be fun, like a detective puzzle. "OK, what stupid, greedy, idea has to be concealed this carefully? Where's the giveaway line?" And then there will be a key sentence buried in the boilerplate that gives it away. ("OK, freedom, threat to our way of life, greatest crisis this nation has faced, blah, blah, protect your family, blah blah,… aha! Got it! This is supporting the proposal to fund the development of a phalanx of trained radioactive cockroaches to attack post-apocalyptic zombies. That was a tough one.") But here there was no giveaway phrase at all. After finishing every single line, and trying out all my decoder rings, I was just as much in the dark as when I began.

Evidently this was produced by no ordinary boilerplate factory.

Baconzgood November 22, 2011 at 3:55 pm

This is supporting the proposal to fund the development of a phalanx of trained radioactive cockroaches to attack post-apocalyptic zombies. Sounds nefarious. 2 questions: Can I rent these roaches? and if so where do I sigh?

OneDollarJuana November 22, 2011 at 3:29 pm

Baconzgood November 22, 2011 at 1:37 pm

And fox screams political oppression against Wall Street in 5…4…3

Master Janitor V572 November 22, 2011 at 1:38 pm

From CLGD's proposal:

OWS bears many of the hallmarks of a well-funded effort and media reports have speculated about associations with Goerge Soros and others. It will be vital to understand who is funding it and what their backgrounds and motives are. If we can show they have the same cynical motivation as a political opponent [i.e., you] it will undermine their credibility in a profound way. A key strategic goal will be to show any evidence of fraud on the other side.

Well there it is…You just can't hang that dirty laundry out for everybody to see, bankers!

SorosBot November 22, 2011 at 1:41 pm

It's good old projection that Occupy Wall Street is like the teabaggers, backed by Grover Norquist and Dick Army (hee) and promoted by Fox Noise.

BaldarTFlagass November 22, 2011 at 1:42 pm

If we can show they have the same cynical motivation as we do it will undermine their credibility in a profound way.

Fixed.

JimNauseam November 22, 2011 at 3:56 pm

"Well-funded"? Have you been to an Occupy site? What funding?

Master Janitor V572 November 22, 2011 at 4:02 pm

Thus the fraud. Same deal as homeless people:  they’re all secretly rich.

SayItWithWookies November 22, 2011 at 1:39 pm

Brave enough to use OWS to ask for money, just not brave enough to mention them by name — this is the type of political courage you'd expect from the person who announced that impeachment was off the table when she became speaker. Still shitloads better than that nicotine-stained crybaby running the House now, though.

LionHeartSoyDog November 22, 2011 at 2:22 pm

Rackloads better, also.

deanbooth November 22, 2011 at 10:27 pm

My theory: Only 50% [wag] of people know what OWS is, but everyone knows what a "grassroots movement" is. If you specifically mention OWS, you lose half your marks off the bat.

Master Janitor V572 November 22, 2011 at 1:41 pm

The more you read that "proposal," the funnier it is. In essence it boils down to: "Send us $750K and we'll commission somebody else to do a poll, sit on our butts and Google the shit out of OWS, and maybe check Facebook and Twitter now and then. You'll get an email from us occasionally." What a deal! Tell us where to send the check!

Callyson November 22, 2011 at 1:45 pm

The memo indicates that CLGC would research who has contributed financial backing to OWS, noting that, “Media reports have speculated about associations with George Soros and others.”
"It will be vital,” the memo says, “to understand who is funding it and what their backgrounds and motives are. If we can show that they have the same cynical motivation as a political opponent it will undermine their credibility in a profound way.”
They really *are* scared now…good…

Ducksworthy November 22, 2011 at 2:04 pm

Maybe somebody should investigate who is funding these "Media" reports. Kochsuckers.

GOPCrusher November 22, 2011 at 2:56 pm

Why do they assume that someone must be funding OWS? Hasn't the Tea Bagger Movement proven what a true grassroots movement can do to affect the American political process?

Chichikovovich November 22, 2011 at 3:20 pm

Câlisse! – Good point! It's almost as if this reaction is giving away a truth they're working tirelessly to obscure.

Wish I could give more upfists.

elviouslyqueer November 22, 2011 at 1:47 pm

"It will be vital,” the memo says, “to understand who is funding it [OWS] and what their backgrounds and motives are. If we can show that they have the same cynical motivation as a political opponent we've been overtly exhibiting since Day Fucking One, it will undermine their credibility in a profound way.”

Fixed that for 'ya, CLGC.

Callyson November 22, 2011 at 1:47 pm

Also:
Part of the plan CLGC proposes is to do “statewide surveys in at least eight states that are shaping up to be the most important of the 2012 cycle.”
Specific races listed in the memo are U.S. Senate races in Florida, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Wisconsin, Ohio, New Mexico and Nevada as well as the gubernatorial race in North Carolina.
If I *do* send the Dems any money, now I know where to direct the funds…thanks for the heads – up, CLGC!

Lionel[redacted]Esq November 22, 2011 at 1:49 pm

In fairness to Nancy, if you listen to FOX News, and Murdoch own propaganda organ, or Conservatives in general, they have been linking Pelosi and other Democrats as the leaders of OWS (under the influence of George Soros and others) since day 1. And let's face it, the Democrats haven't been doing everything they can to belittle and demonize anyone who believes that the banks have gone out of control as pot-smoking, Communist, Muslim, cop-car defecating, sex in public anarchist who are trying to destroy this country. Given the normal Democratic response to Republicans is to simply ball up and play dead, this is something.

Chichikovovich November 22, 2011 at 2:08 pm

From CLGC proposal: "and media reports have speculated about associations with George Soros and others."

That is: when Fox "speculated" it, that was obviously 100% weapons-grade bullshit pulled out of that part of their ass where they keep all the other wild speculations pertaining to Emmanuel Goldstein George Soros. But now that they have said it, the fact that they've said it is documentation.

Normally you would think that being at such an evidently arms-length relationship with reality would be a disqualification in a law firm. But presumably the sales pitch is supposed to go: Look, at how good we are at conjuring up bizarre paranoid fantasies out of nothing! Don't you want to make sure we're on your team? Inside the tent pissing out, know what I mean?

prommie November 22, 2011 at 2:26 pm

How many ex-Goldman Sachsers are in the Obama administration? They clearly own him, and everyone else, in both parties. The Vampire Squid thats eating our face. BTW, so to speak, as it were.

prommie November 22, 2011 at 2:31 pm

When has the Democratic party ever gone against anything the finance industry too-big-to-fail giants wanted? Prosecute anyone over the fraud? Hey, how about all these tough new regulations, huh? Fucking owned, they are forbidden to even say the words "Reinstate Glass-Steagall," or "Repeal Gramm-Leach-Bliley," if they are caugfht whispering them, even at midnight in the Jefferson Memorial (where noone goes) they are cast into outer darkness, where there is wailing, and gnashing of teeth. Antitrust? Remember when there was some kind of law about trusts, monopolies, I think they were frowned on. These were the kinds of policies democrats were known for, once upon a time, before they all started gobbling greedily, sloppily, hungrily on the cock of Goldman Sachs and the rest.

RadiosTyrone November 22, 2011 at 2:50 pm

I think the whole fucking political class has signed a "No Talking about Gramm-Leach-Bliley" pledge. For fear of being cut off the donation teat and primaried.

Chichikovovich November 22, 2011 at 3:13 pm

I bet there isn't a single Tea party enthusiast who has any idea what Gramm-Leach-Bliley is. But let one Democratic congresseur or /euse breathe one hint about repeal, and fifteen seconds after s/he does so, hundreds of tea partiers will converge at his/her office holding pre-printed "Create Jobs: Save Gramm-Leach-Bliley" and "Support our Troops: Save Gramm-Leach-Bliley" signs they were handed (the pre-printed signs may be realistically hand-written looking), while at the same time Rush, Hannity, Megyn with a y, Chris "apple far from the tree" Wallace and the other blather creators are put on 24/7 scarify alert about the horrible new threat to American Prosperity.

'Cause, you know, they're a spontaneous grass-roots movement.

RadiosTyrone November 22, 2011 at 3:22 pm

Exactly Chich, part of propaganda is suppression. About the only thing they would fight a more bloody battle over would be a 3% marginal tax reinstatement.

She's done lots of good things for us, and when I was in a tour group at the Capitol building a few days after Obama's inauguration and she came walking through with some of her colleagues, she took a few minutes to stop, say hi and chat briefly. But this is a snark site. I get a tad peeved at those who lurk here who think there are those who are above snark. Hero-worship gets people and nations into more trouble than it's worth. Just my grumpy, half-assed opinion.

Oh, and a gentle reminder, you don't have to donate money to the DCCC or the DSCC to promote the progressive or even the Democratic cause. Click on the websites of progressive politicians or go to Act Blue and donate there to progressive politicians. Money that Nancy collects can go to people without our best interests at heart, even if she would rather it be otherwise, and I suspect she would. Unless of course you're a Blue Dog Dem or Clintonista lurking here, then go ahead and send three dollars to Nancy.

She failed to impeach. She failed to even try to impeach. She struck out without taking a swing. That is the only important thing about Nancy Pelosi and the sum total of her legacy, the only thing history will remember about her. Well, that and the botox.

actor212 November 22, 2011 at 2:39 pm

It's sad that Pelosi can't just come out and say "We fucked up"

In fairness to her, she did try when the Dems held both houses to come up with a (slightly more) liberal agenda, but got shot down by the filibuster-proof Repub…I mean, Democratic majority in the Senate.

If you're shopping for pepper spray, be sure to read the reviews of the latest anti-democracy food product:

DahBoner November 22, 2011 at 2:51 pm

This is nothing!

I thought for a second she had opened up an OWS giftshop filled with Chinese crapola..

Generation[redacted] November 22, 2011 at 3:32 pm

And if you take a picture, it's $2.

anniegetyerfun November 22, 2011 at 2:52 pm

Jeez, at least the Republicans lack the shame to prevent them from noisily and officially co-opting a movement of angry citizens. I'll give them that much, the fuckers.

Beetagger November 22, 2011 at 2:54 pm

Can't say the word "shit" even when her mouth is full of it.

mereoblivion November 22, 2011 at 3:11 pm

So Nancy really is a queen! Who knew?

jus_wonderin November 22, 2011 at 3:19 pm

OT: Have a great holiday all. Off work here till Monday. Don't eat to much if you do the Turkey Day thing.

elviouslyqueer November 22, 2011 at 3:38 pm

Slightly OT, but in case #OWS needs yet another out-of-touch grifting greedy motherfucker to target, look no further. And don't forget your pepper spray.

real_dc_native November 22, 2011 at 3:53 pm

A surprising number of organizations are "supporting" OWS by collecting money for them or to support their issues, DCCC, DSCC, democrats.com, etc etc. I get too many emails from lefty organizations and they have all jumped on the OWS bandwagon.

I got an email a while back for "occupy Montgomery Village" a suburb of DC where everyone is working three jobs to pay their under-water mortgagesand their kids' student loans. Montgomery Village? Really? This is the cold dark heart of capitalist excess? What were the six of us going to do? Meet at a community center and march down to the local CapitalOne branch? I told the "occupy Montgomery Village" folks I'd give them a ride over to the Metro station so they could occupy something that made sense. No one took me up on it.

In all this rambling, my point is, that all these timid liberal politicians want a pice of that as long as it won't cost them any banking lobby money.

Sassomatic November 22, 2011 at 3:57 pm

Tell ya what Nancy. For every minute you stand with arms linked with the protestors facing a guy dressed like a storm trooper threatening you with mace, I will give you one dollar. This offer is limited to 5 dollars, because that is all the money I have. Although I think that will not be an issue.

mormos November 22, 2011 at 6:07 pm

kill 'em. kill 'em all.

Plowmon November 22, 2011 at 9:35 pm

Can I hose down Nancy with pepper-spray? Pleeeease!?!?

ttommyunger November 22, 2011 at 10:38 pm

Oh well, she does have a nice rack.

fuflans November 22, 2011 at 11:30 pm

well she does rock a tiara. you have to give her that.

Negropolis November 23, 2011 at 1:15 am

I'm so tired of this criticism of the Dem leadership that they should be all over Occupy. In my opinion, I don't want them to claim it. They have the legitimacy they do because they haven't been co-opted. The funny thing is if they co-opted them, everyone would be calling it cynical.

Kirsten, the jig is up. Everyone knows that "Kirsten" is just Ken in drag. Give up the ghost, already.

Suck My Balls November 23, 2011 at 1:24 am

You're snarked if you do, you're snarked if you don't.

Negropolis November 23, 2011 at 1:34 am

I like snark. What I don't appreciate is barely veiled bitterness tarted up like snark. OWS isn't their (the political class's) movement, it's all of our movement. It's not the Democrat's movement; it's the people's movement. It's been two months for goodness sake; let this thing continue to grow organically for a while longer, that is, unless folks want to let this thing burn so hot so soon that it disappears before the election rolls around, next year.

Chichikovovich November 22, 2011 at 2:45 pm

No, he was the first surgeon general.

GOPCrusher November 22, 2011 at 2:48 pm

I don't remember any gay bondage porn. Must of been when I was out with the Mumps.

Chichikovovich November 22, 2011 at 3:03 pm

Yikes! You wrote "must of". Quick, get your head down! I think I see Chet K. coming.

Baconzgood November 22, 2011 at 3:57 pm
