Did you hear some dude got capped in downtown Oakland the other day, and died? This happens a lot in the poor parts of Oakland, and elsewhere in the United States. But, thanks to the unrelated Occupy protest/camp currently occupying the grim downtown of Oak-Town, this gun killing got coverage all over the country. The Authorities are even using it as an excuse to shut down #Occupy Oakland! You know, because there is apparently gang violence in this nation of 50 million poor people and Zero Hope and a billion guns.
The San Jose Mercury News reports:
There’s been no significant change in the number of tents on Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, despite Mayor Jean Quan’s plea for the campers to leave on their own in the wake of Thursday night’s violence. The man was shot and killed at about 5 p.m., Thursday just yards from the entrance to the Occupy Oakland encampment, apparently after a fight with other men.
The killing, which came as hundreds of occupiers prepared to celebrate the camp’s one-month anniversary, prompted Quan to call for the campers “to leave voluntarily tonight.”
The violence occurred on the same day as UC Berkeley police defended their crackdown on Occupy Cal. Oakland City Council president Larry Reid condemned the shooting and said it was yet more proof that the tent city needed to be dismantled. “We can no longer continue to sit back,” he said. “This has raised the red flag even more.”
Uhh, so there was a red flag raised somewhere (but not all the way?) about poverty and gun violence in this country, and now it’s raised “even more,” so the people protesting inequality and injustice should be evicted? Makes sense to us! [San Jose Mercury News]

The red flag was raised from 10 to 11-11-11.
“This has raised the red flag even more.”
We sold Oakland to the Chinese?
I think we still owe the Chinese for the bridge to get there, so it seems fair.
Tough luck, Oaktown: no more foodstamps.
I've worked in downtown Oakland for 10 years. This is SOP in these parts.
That is kind of the entire point of this post.
Yeah, I've heard of it happening at 14th and Broadway (Occupado-land) more than once. Once it was someone came off a bus (*), popped a cap in someone, and tried to get back on the bus.
* for out-of-towners: this is a major transit hub because it feeds into BART.
It makes about as much sense as calling the Occupy Wall Street protests "violent" because some police have used violence against protesters.
But Soros, obvs there woulda been no police violence if those filthy #OWS hippies hadn't been out protesting. The cops woulda be peacefully eating donuts instead of shooting rubber bullets at the #OWSs. This is like the guy telling the judge there woulda been no domestic violence incident if his wife hadn't insisted on repeatedly putting her face in the way of his fist.
Yes. That's exactly what it's like.
Bitch wouldn'a got a blackeye if she wasn't fuckin' asking for it.
True story, saw a Yahoo comment this AM that stated that this is proof that the OWS protesters are about to turn violent and that the police and National Guard need to set loose and use any means necessary to break up the protesters.
the Oakland Police Officers Association joined the chorus with an open letter to the campers, asking them to "leave Frank Ogawa Plaza peacefully and immediately so Oakland police can get back to work fighting the devastating crime that's occurring in our neighborhoods."
Sgt. Dom Arotzarena, OPOA president, said the letter was sent out mainly because of Thursday's violence.
"In light of yesterday's violence, enough is enough. What more needs to happen? We would like to see the protesters leave peacefully," Arotzarena said.
Quick fix:
the American people joined the chorus with an open letter to the 1%, asking them to "leave Wall Street peacefully and immediately so Main Street can get back to work fighting the devastating economic collapse that's occurring in our neighborhoods."
"In light of today's violent economy, enough is enough. What more needs to happen? We would like to see the reckless speculators leave peacefully"
/done
Or the Oakland police can just go back to work fighting the crime in their neighborhoods anyway, since the protesters aren't doing anything illegal and the cops have no need to be there.
Or they can just go back to shooting their own undercover guys.
I look forward to the day when we can tell the 1% to peacefully and immediately leave the entire country.
I'll admit — the peacefully part seems kind of anti-climactic. It might be nice to see a few beatdowns of the Biffs and Buffys of the world before it all winds down. Just so they know what it's like to be on the other end of the stick for once.
the Oakland Police Officers Association joined the chorus with an open letter to the campers, asking them to "leave Frank Ogawa Plaza peacefully and immediately because the Oakland police suffering from a form of tennis elbow, from swinging their nightsticks so much. Also, how will we fight devastating crime occurring in our neighborhoods, when shooting people in the face becomes nothing special anymore to our officers?"
/red flag fix'd
Like the abusing spouse that screams "LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO!" to the battered spouse, (usually the wife).
Fuck me.
Bulldozing tent villages solves gang violence? Shit–it's so simple! Why didn't we think of this in the '80s? I'll bet if we'd napalmed a couple concerts at Red Rocks back then there wouldn't even be Crips or Bloods today.
It worked great for Douglas MacArthur in 1932

Tent cities are the problem? Well then, let's nuke some Boy & Girl Scout Camps.
They don't do much camping these days. But there's a merit badge for "blogging." (Not kidding at all.)
*sob*
I was a Boy Scout!
I got merit badges for Canoeing and Reptile Study.
~
Well, that last one certainly should help you in understanding Wall Street behavior.
And "finance"
We're 10 years after and then some on our four libtarded Eagles, so things do change. I don't miss igloo camping on Mt. Rainier one bit. Nope, not one bit, but the oldest, who's pulling 40 now still goes snowshoe camping on the Cascade Crest in the dead of winter.
meh, lemme know when there is a badge for "warblogging."
They did have one, but its only recipient, Jack Steuf, saw his revoked over the Papa John's Down's n' Out Special fiasco.
Well, the computer science or whatever badge I got in my stint didn't teach any practical skills anyway, so at least now it's teaching something they can at least pretend is a practical skill.
The fuck?
Gang Violence, in Oakland? What's next. Drug sales?
Fuckin OWS!
Um, so, I was 4 BLOCKS! from the Oakland shooting. So maybe it was a bit inappropriate to post about this so soon.
Somewhere (Newell's couch), Jim Newell's google news alert is beeping.
Exactly, it's like a ginger bat signal.
Uhuh. Four blocks. And you have an alibi witness I hope? You wouldn't be the notorious "Batshit – G" would you, Mr. GuanoFaucet. If that is your real name.
I've been busy, but has FOX News blamed the riots at Penn State on the Joe Pa branch of OWS yet?
Actually, they've been claiming that the whole football scandal was due to OWS. I'm still trying to figure out herp derp herpderp.
#OccupyUnderageAsshole was back in the 90s for the Penn State coaching staff.
Sending Patton to burn out the Bonus Army encampment in DC is what crushed the mafia once and for all, isn't it? I'm sure this will work equally well.
Quite the contrary. It killed the Irish mobs, which gave Lucky Luciano his chance to take control.
It'd be ironic if something like that happened at MacArthur Park.
I don't think that I could take it.
The protesters need to leave so the police can go back to doing their regular job of ignoring brown people getting killed. Now, because of the coverage, they have to act like they actually give a rat's crap.
Or doing the dirty work, themselves. They definitely aren't above it. Neither is BART, apparently…
The red flag that has been raised by the Occupy movement is that the American public, not the most astute crowd on the planet, has finally started to realize that the top 1% is screwing them with no lube. Which of course requires immediate reaction from the the 1%'s lackey's and brown shirts to the threat to getting an even a bigger pile of money.
Next thing you know every crack head and meth addict will be labeled as a OWS participant. The usual suspects are already making this claim http://www.theblaze.com/stories/increasingly-deba….
http://www.observer.com/2011/10/new-york-post-dee…
Sex and drugs? What's next, those filthy hippies playing some of that negro rock and/or roll music?
The NRA has been strangely silent on this OWS “related” story wouldn’t a typical response be something like; if those protestors were armed maybe they could have..blah blah blah.
Of course this is in Phoenix, open carry at OccupyPhoenix:

Teabaggers were packing second amendment heat but the MSM NEVER brought up potential violence, nor pegged violent crimes occurring in the neighborhood of their idiotic protests on them.
I've also heard that there is serious fraud, embezzelment and immoral banking activity happening in the immidiate vicinity of the Occupy Wall Street protests… Time to lock up those tent-dwelling white-collar criminals in the park.
A shooting in downtown Oakland? Whoda thunk it.
Slightly O/T: Occupy LEGO Land complete with LEGO drum circle!
If we need to go in violently to stop this unrelated violence we will!
-Larry Reid-
Nice try, Mayor Quan. Is that the best you could come up with?
Are some of the Occupy Oakland protesters Muslim?
Because then this would warrant the rare Wingnut Trifecta Freakout.
I wouldn't be surprised. We have a substantial local population.
You gottta keep'em sep-ar-ated.

Also, from HuffyPo:
The Occupy Wall Street demonstrations are "as American as apple pie," former Secretary of State Colin Powell said… "What you're seeing with Occupy Wall Street and the others are people who are unhappy and they're directing their unhappiness now toward Wall Street and toward those they think are doing too well in our society."
Salute!
Colin Powell keeps it up, somebody is going to revoke his Republiklan membership and decoder ring.
He does this every now and then. Speaks his mind and demonstrates that he actually understands the challenges and mis-steps of sloppily-conceived policy. He offers up intelligent, insightful criticisms and practical ideas on a well-conceived comprehensive plan to improve X situation.
Then he gets a phone call or something, disappears and holds his peace for another 3 years.
This happened at my house. Mom forgot to flush, so we took out her toilet. Now she doesn't have that problem anymore. Wait. Isn't it Spurious Analogy Day?
Seems to me this is one of the best arguments in FAVOR of maintaining the OWS camp; were it not for OWS, no one would ever have to know or care about the community shooting itself to bits in an annual bloodbath that covers each entire year. Heck, maybe one of those reporters will even ask about HIV in Oakland.
This shooting is a godsend for the right. For the longest time the only thing they could come up with was public urination or rubbing feces on cars. I can't wait for each and ever potential GOP Presidential candidate to crow in unison that this behavior must end!
Can downtown Oakland (which includes everything from Jack London Square to Uptown in the eyes of a visitor from outside our fair city) survive only on business from residents and downtown employees? I doubt it. We need destination eating, drinking, and entertainment (good luck with destination retail). Expecting visitors to analyze the geography and demographics of Oakland is a bit too much to ask–they just see a riot and reconsider.
Fucking correlation and causation, how do they work?
Of course, at this point they don't even have correlation, just a data point.
The right wing would like to brand the Occupy camps as full of lice, TB, new scary lung diseases, sexual assaults, drug addiction, crazy people, hippies, et al, so other people will not go there to explore what it is about.
Guess who else was demonized in this way?
Psst. I saw Sarah Goode dancing with the devil in the pale moonlight. Pass it on.
Here's a peace of advice: why don't you get back to fighting actual devasting crime in the neighborhoods, then?
Fuck this shit. OWS doesn't need a babysitter; obviously the police do. Grow the fuck up, already. You're acting like petulant children.
Hey, Mayor Jeanquan, the very last thing you want to do is to fuck with the protestors, again. Obviously, you haven't learned your lessen. Y'all got recalls in Oakland? 'Cause if you do, mayhaps it's time to remind her that she serves at the pleasure of her constituents, and while Oakland may not be San Francisco, most urban citizens frown upon attacking peaceful protestors, ya' see?
"Just yards from the entrance…" How many yards? Because just 857 yards, to choose a random number, is not that close at all.
Yeah, are we talking "40 meters dash" close, or close as the "Ground Zero Mosque" is to the WTC site? lol
Also, one of my dogs just farted. I have decided in the best interests of clean air I must stop feeding them from this day forward. FIXED!
Today's Drudge hedes on the Occupy Apocalypse:
DEATH, DISEASE PLAGUE 'OCCUPY' PROTESTS…
Dead man in Salt Lake City…
Tuberculosis in Atlanta…
'Zuccotti Lung' on Wall Street…
Suicide in Vermont…
Murder in Oakland…
Oh I know, I check Drudge every morning just to find out the day's anti-Occupy talking points. That TB in Atlanta slide is the kind of slacker excuse for psyops that Allen Dulles would have rewarded with a quick trip to Eastern Europe carrying only a parachute, cyanide pill and orders to kill Stalin.
The homeless people are letting Occupy ATL stay at the biggest shelter in Georgia, which is being foreclosed on to build a parking lot. Shockingly, TB was discovered here – before Occupy ATL even moved in. And of course it is present in poor/homeless communities all over the USA thanks in part to our sacred, American, for-profit healthcare system. No one covered the "homeless man has TB" story two months ago, when it happened. But now that these communist anarchist liberal art majors are in the mix, MY GOD CONSUMPTION.
Commence the bombing runs over Oglethorpe, Morehouse, and the Georgia Tech College Dems immediately.
Yeah, this does remind me of another protest that was put down by force
